FOREWORD ILAM PRESIDENT This year, the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, or MLAAs, marks its 7th year. The award started in 2007 with less than 20 submissions in two categories, the Professional Category and Developer Category. Today, the awards have reached 6 full categories and this year we received the highest number of submissions at 106 entries, consisting of Malaysian projects and international projects from Singapore, PR China and Hong Kong. We have also witnessed a growth in design strength and new ideas emerging in line with the increased taste of end users and the search for innovative solutions, especially in property developments. The standard of project documentation has also become more impressive and places the latest landscape designs on a competitive edge. Over the years since we started this award, we have observed an evolution in landscape design trends. From simple designs with basic landscape components to landscape budgets for major projects with more complex requirements, our fellow professionals are now challenged to work with other professions such as architects, engineers and planners to solve complex site issues with innovative solutions, all working hand in hand. This year, for the first time, we are proud to introduce our MLAA Trophy design, “The Tree”, inspired by the lines of land contours and crafted to perfection in the form of a limber and elegant tree.

This is the 7th edition of the award programme in which we have received a total of 106 submission under 6 categories, all displaying an exceptionally high standard. MALAYSIA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS - A 180-DAY JOURNEY
DAY 1 (MID OCTOBER)

The calling for MLAA submissions started in mid October 2014 and ended in mid January 2015 for the duration of 100 days. During the period, the participants were requested to register and purchase the Entry Binder, which consisted of submission forms and guidelines.
Briefings were conducted in November and December to guide the participants on submission requirements, presentation and winning strategies. During the briefing, participants were allowed to browse through previous year’s MLAA submissions.

The marks were consolidated and the head of the jury looked at the overall marks for each submission. A passing mark level determined the Honour and Excellence Award winners. Often, projects with exceptional ideas and commendable effort which did not reach the passing mark may be recommended for a Merit Award. The list of winning projects are presented to ILAM council members for final endorsement. The winners’ names will be revealed after the endorsement.
From the winner’s list, the council and jury conducted a 2 day site visit to Excellence Award and Construction Award candidates to evaluate the projects. Later, the team, consisting of members of the jury and the ILAM Council, discussed to determine the winner of the Special Honour, Excellence, and “Project of the Year” Awards.
Within a week after the finalised result, official letters and e-mails were sent to inform all the participants of their submission status. From this point, a series of publicity efforts take place, including media announcements in the local press in the form of a special pullout, available nationwide after the award gala night.

The first round evaluated the file submissions by referring to various aspects of the criteria as published. During the process, the jury discussed in detail each project and gave marks. The evaluation process was blind, as the name of the participants were kept confidential.

MLAA GALA NIGHT The most anticipated event of the year in ILAM’s calendar took place in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month celebrations in April. This is a special night, honouring the crème de la crème of the landscape architecture industry.

MLAA TROPHY THE TREE
This year, the MLAA Organising Commitee introduce the MLAA Trophy, ‘The Tree’, inspired by the lines of land contours. By extracting each contour line, we then positioned it vertically to form the shape of a tree, which also symbolises “Land” and “scape”. Standing at a height of 25cm, this trophy comes in various colours to represent the award type.

This is the highest award for the year. Only one winner will be selected, based on all the winners awarded the Excellence Award in the same year.

This award is given to the finalist of the Excellence Award candidates which did not win an Excellence Award yet achieved a higher standard, above and beyond the Honour Award.

SUNWAY RYMBA HILLS SUNWAY DAMANSARA
Rymba Hills embodies the tranquility of the ‘Coming Home to Nature’ design concept. Stretching over 19.72 acres, this concept embarks on its unique landscape features that are interwoven with one another. It is designed to suit the existing contours and terrain to achieve low environmental impact. In addition, it is designed to create a seamless blend between indoor areas and outdoor landscaped spaces. Within the development, 60% of green space is dedicated to a forest park, linear gardens, play gardens, green vertical walls and a clubhouse. LEFT Eco themed playground design blends into the dense landscape. ABOVE The 460m forest trail bringing the residents to an enchanted forest experience, right behind the doorsteps. ABOVE RIGHT The club house planted with creepers blends harmoniously within the 60% of green spaces of Rymba Hills. THE MANSIONS DESA PARKCITY
The prestigious Mansions in Desa ParkCity is nestled on the highest point of Desa ParkCity on an old rock outcrop. Its natural foundation, pure granite, was challenging to overcome along with the need for sensitivity to the foundation values of the site. This dynamic landscape offers a spectrum of emotive responses, through its natural undulating slopes and terrain that comforts its patrons in lush privacy. The Mansions successfully transforms an abandoned, barren quarry, into a dynamic and luxurious environment which encapsulates the sustainable impact of introducing luscious landscape architecture onto harsh landscapes. Complete with 6 areas of enjoyment, community-living and an established place-making identity to the site, The Mansions is the ultimate hilltop retreat, and a true masterpiece. THE AIRIE SRI DAMANSARA
The Airie, Sri Damansara, is a residential area that promises fresh and safe living for the residents. The design incorporates the concept of ‘Dream Home’ in a park environment setting. The landscape creates an environment that has an overall park feeling, rather than having just a garden at individual homes. It also incorporates a contemporary approach with a trendy lifestyle reflected in the landscape design, specifically tailored for all ages. To increase the overall green coverage within the enclave, the driveway and car park are built below the units. Above, the area is converted into an environmental deck, providing a traffic-free zone and safe green spaces where the community can socialize.

CASAMAN DESA PARKCITY
The Casaman is an intimate residential enclave with a strong yet elegant sense of identity which fosters and instills a sense of community and neighbourly interaction. Casaman embodies a progressive approach to community living which sets a benchmark for future residential developments in Malaysia. Casaman landscape design takes its inspiration from the English concept of ‘Mews’, which are residential courtyard clusters formed from the conversion of buildings and out-houses fronting semi-enclosed spaces. The design aims to create a contemporary tropical landscape interpretation of a ‘Mews’ which complements the architecture with a sense of exclusivity, grandeur and romanticism. The abstract landscape elements that characterise a ‘Mews’ can be summarised as a courtyard streetscape which extends to the edge of the buildings with cobbled or stone paved road finishes, merging surface finishes with non-defined roads. As a result, the environment is a shaded and intimate communal space.

Permai Gardens is a strata landed link house, semi detached and bungalow development, located in Penang. The design adopts the concept of ‘Tranquil Oasis’. The landscape design provides owners with a total tranquil ambiance upon returning home. Landscape is used as a tool for community integration. It plays a vital role as the focal point at the club house with its facilities such as a pool, deck, pergolas and lawn, which bring residents to the heart of the action, direct from their doorsteps. At the side of the pool, pergolas cleverly integrate with the green wall, providing a relaxing enclave in which to unwind. To fully commit to the environment, existing trees found in the project area were preserved and transplanted into the future development as a conservation effort for a greener community. The transplanting project was 95% successful and, today, plants are acclimatized and in good health. The trees for the Boulevard area were chosen due to certain criteria and concerns, such as whether the species was indigenous, a forest tree or temperate plant. The mixture of indigenous local tree species and some temperate trees creates a botanical atmosphere for learning and discovery. To increase the biodiversity, the selection of plants that attract wildlife and insects, whether day or night, was essential. Preserving site vegetation retains the original beauty of the area and sets one’s mind on the well-being of future generations.

The Opera House, the clubhouse at Symphony Hills, was designed to be a spectacular floating structure which exudes an exclusive resort ambience as it sprawls horizontally along a waterway, creating breathtaking floating pavilions.

Each pavilion is a unique recreational space - connected by a serpentine walkway. Residents and visitors alike are tempted to luxuriate in the infinity pool or soothe their senses at landscaped ponds or sensory gardens, or simply seek inspiration on a floating gazebo to the sounds of cascading waters. For adrenaline rush activities, the adjacent wet play area is available for splashing around. Ecologically, plants and trees were chosen based on their adaptibility and ease of maintenance while water bodies around the Clubhouse use a sediment filtration system without the need for chlorine. This allows the flora and fauna to flourish. Architecturally, the design incorporates features such as shades which reduce heat, thus lowering energy consumption for cooling units. Prima Villa is set within a lush acreage of land, overlooking the beautiful lake view of Taman Danau Desa. It is a high end luxury lifestyle accommodation with modern architecture position on a sloping landscape backdrop. The landscape concept for Prima Villa is to bring in the greenery and the beautiful outdoor vistas with a ‘Modern Tropical Minimalist’ design concept. This integrates hard and soft landscape elements with the modern architectural style. Due to the sloping land profile, the landscape was designed with a multilevel approach to take full advantage of the vista and natural terrain. The landscape design provides greenery for home owners at their doorstep, whilst providing adequate landscape space and amenities to cultivate outdoor interest and a healthy lifestyle, all within an exclusive, private and secured enclave.

SETIA GREENS PENANG
Setia Greens is an exclusive project that is set to change the landscape of Penang island with its green buildings designed to save energy and resources, all with a view to reducing our carbon footprint. In line with the green concept, the landscape here adopts a more sustainable approach with the injection of art elements. The ‘Nature and Art’ concept emphasises the usage of natural and recycled materials in most of the finishings, with lush trees and forest embracing the environment. Due to maintenance and energy consumption, plants of low maintenance and reduced water and fertiliser requirements were used. To create an iconic experience in the landscape design, the sculptures, in the form of shelters, pergolas, landscape furniture and landforms, were crafted in an undulating and rhythmic manner.

Beethoven, Symphony Hills, is an urban gated community which provides an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate in nature’s embrace. Enjoy verdant greenery, nearly four times more than other residential areas, with green coverage at an average of 35% for each precinct. Residents coming home cruise along majestic tree-lined boulevards. Each precinct is distinguished by uniquely inspirational gardens such as ‘denai’ and ‘tempua’, and feature sweeping vistas of tropical trees. Mozart & Schubert are the new addition of residential parcels at Symphony Hills, interwoven between contemporary living and micro urban ecological landscape with its elevated gardens, known as ‘Denai’.

The first floor deck is divided into two elevated gardens, the Private Deck (house compound area) and Public Deck (‘Denai’ footpath). The unique quality of the ‘Denai’ footpath sees it constructed on top of the parking floor using Shera floor planks, made from 30% recyclable materials and certified as eco loving green products. Materials used here help reduce construction waste and are pollution free. For the ground area, the design uses the ecological dry creek approach to reduce urban heat. Dry creeks channel rainwater runoff from neighbouring properties and hold the water before it flows into the main drain. Large boulders are placed along the dry creek embankments to slow the water flow and prevent erosion.

SHOW VILLAGE, SETIA ECO CASCADIA The green space design here comes with three main ingredients; grass, pavement and linear trees. This combination results in an outdoor space which binds together landscape and architecture in an harmonious manner. For connectivity across outdoor spaces, a series of concrete pathways are seamlessly orchestrated throughout the park and its surroundings. The contrast between green lawn and concrete paths creates delightful visuals which allow residents to wander freely. One of the eco features is the ‘Green Connectors’ which link the houses to the clubhouse in order to encourage more outdoor community building activities.

Pearl Regency, a sophisticated and stylistic address in Penang, comprises a vibrant residential as well as commercial hub created for a cosmopolitan community. This is yet another extension of the urban lifestyle concept, which manifests the joy of simplicity in the landscape design. The landscape approach is inspired by a pattern of lines and grids which has been introduced as a significant element in Pearl Regency. From here, the landscape pocket at the ground level is initiated by a public-friendly access, connected with the tranquil cascading water feature. The linings are tangibly inscribed on the walkway and driveway to create a contemporary paving pattern. Beyond that, the line style also applies to the larger elevated garden on the podium. For the plantings, the arrangement of the hedges complements the grid lines and contributes to softening the perimeter parapet wall. Meanwhile, the sinuous swimming pools and circular pool bar help to ease the rigidity of the pattern for the discerning eye.

This is a large scale garden living community in East Chengdu, which perfectly interprets the ‘Singapore Garden International Community Life’ design philosophy, becoming the benchmark for developments in Chengdu, China. Chengdu Botanica Hong Jun is one of the phases of The Botanica township planning project. With its overall area of 970 acres comprising 9,600 residential units, the township comes equipped with parks, recreational facilities, clubs, kindergartens, a primary school, shopping centres, supermarkets, and a variety of retail stores. The park in particular creates a healthy lifestyle with its lush greeneries. This comfortable living space is integrated through a series of landscaped spaces, green corridors and functional outdoor activity spots which cater to the needs of the residents. The park also creates multifunctional family oriented pocket gardens in a modern retreat setting.

AZELIA RESIDENCE DAMANSARA AVENUE
The natural hillside and the wonder of nature, replete with trees, a waterfall, streams, rocks and soft moonlight has become the inspiration for the creation of the unique landscape space called Azelia. Azelia Residence is part of a new development in Damansara Avenue, with the master planning concept for the entire development based on the urban forest environment concept. Due to being located on a hilly slope of Bandar Sri Damansara, once covered by tall trees & wild bushes, the landscape design intends to preserve the original value with slight enhancement in order to blend holistically with the surrounding architecture. As a result, the design compliments the natural backdrop and brings out the best of the surroundings by showcasing the reflection of nature’s elements in every single detail. KM1 WEST BUKIT JALIL
The KM1 West landscape focuses on creating serenity and tranquility within the hustle and bustle of its urban locale. Its principle of using elements of water, motifs of nature and careful selection of plants has successfully achieved the desired concept.
Serenity is the landscape approach for KM1 West; creating a landscape environment that has a state or quality of being calm, tranquil and serene. The design challenge here was to fully utilize the limited space and create an environment that is usable to the residents. Thus, the design of the pool podium level is kept as an open space to serve as a multi-purpose outdoor activity area. Among the interesting elements in the landscape design is the egg inspired structures which punctuate the landscaped vistas. The gigantic sculpture, ‘Egg Stand’, symbolises the safety and protection of the residences and is being used as the icon for the development.

Conceived as a ‘Resort in the Sky’ design, Tropicana Grande, set amidst rolling green manicured lawns and specially designed lakes with multi-levels of green spaces, exudes resort-like charm which soothes the soul and energises the mind. At Tropicana Grande, residents can enjoy a modern lifestyle of condominium living yet continue to take pleasure in all the leisurely pursuits associated with resort living. The landscape approach adopts a terrace garden design, as seen in the natural form of hill contours, planted with tropical foliage and colourful blooms. Stunning sculptures play a vital role in providing an artistic touch to the whole ambiance. The design emphasises the 4 values of quality living which are; to promote a youthful and sporting spirit among the community members; rejuvenation of the environment; wellness in home living, and cultivating the artistic individual. 11 MONT’ KIARA MONT’ KIARA
A sustainable and eco-friendly approach has been put to the forefront for 11 Mont Kiara to create quality resort living despite the limited space. The solution? Create a multi-level Environmental Deck catering for different activities and which has now become an iconic feature of 11MK. Adopting the concept of ‘stacking’ landscape elements to achieve the most functional use out of a limited space, the landscape design aims to offer new and unique landscape experiences for the community. Among the features are the multilevel landscape spaces, which are visually and seamlessly connected. The statutory service and utility buildings are covered with landscape over a double slab to create more usable garden space. The ‘floating’ pool is designed to reflect as if the water is suspended in a vessel that is floating above, supported by fluid forms of columns. The acrylic panels at the base of the pool allow light to penetrate and naturally illuminate the spaces below.

The Sky Executive Suites is the first of the ‘The Sky’ series of serviced apartments in Johor Bahru. This development provides extensive and attractive recreational facilities which meet the taste and demands of modern, young, urban families and executives, both local and international. The idea of ‘Urban Resort-Style Retreat’ was introduced here as it appeals to young families and executives with its sleek design, stylised and modern touch. The landscape space creates a peaceful retreat to welcome residents from their hectic work day. Although it is a small space, it is packed with many surprises, glamour and exhilarating experiences with a swimming pool, jacuzzi pavilions with hydro-massage jets, children’s pool, a sunning deck, glass box gymnasium and many more.

Taking inspiration from the name of the development, ‘Reflections’, the design multiplies green spaces for various floors, and the roof top, and elevates the user experience in an extra-ordinarily modern and artistic design, reflected in each of the levels. Using the theme of ‘Reflections’, the design is cleverly expressed within the landscape elements. Reflective ponds at the ground level, the usage of reflective, shining or polished materials in the sculptures, wind chimes, etc. In addition, the usage of lights and colours play a vital role in reflecting the landscape elements and can also form a shadow cast by the sculptures or reflect the landscape elements on the water’s surface.

MOUNT PARKER RESIDENCES HONG KONG
Set against the backdrop of Mount Parker, Hong Kong, the apartments offer spectacular views of the Hong Kong harbour, surrounding parkland and the city skyline. The development integrates eco-friendly features into the modern architecture, landscape and interior designs, to create a strong, family orientated environment.
The landscape design principles for the development are based on the interplay of landscape forms within the architectural layout. In consideration of these principles, the landscape concept creates an harmonious co-existence of architecture, interior and natural surroundings. The communal pool, spa and seating terraces located on the ground floor are designed to merge with the existing woodland. Royal Regent, Sri Putramas 3, is an exclusive upmarket condominium, set within lush green surroundings. The development not only offers facilities such as a swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, tennis court and playground but also a pocket park within the vicinity. Here, quality of living is enhanced via extensive landscape features. The landscape design adopts a clean and minimal concept, coupled with a touch of art via sculptures as the main features. Water elements dominate most of the landscape area, especially on the podium level, along with a playground, water play area, pool, BBQ pit and other multipurpose spaces. The continuous deck incorporates a continuous flowing stream of water from the side to the main pool. THE HAVEN LAKESIDE RESIDENCES IPOH
The Haven strives to be amongst the first in this country to harvest all available renewable resources within a sustainable budget to reduce the carbon footprint. Whether from the sun, wind, water, bio-gas or pro-active mechanical resources, the residents can stand proud to be a part of this green initiative. Within this protected, pristine limestone formation enclave, the landscape design process was critical. A complete understanding of the surrounding environment was essential to ensure minimal disturbance to the natural landscape, vegetation and wildlife. On top of the preservation efforts, the design includes the conservation of existing natural limestone outcrops and natural habitats. Materials chosen were from the site, recycled and reused as landscape elements. This design thus creates a self-sustaining approach in each of the landscape elements by using renewal resources such as energy and water and minimising energy consumption for maintenance.

The landscape design adopted the idea of ‘Come To The Gardens, Reach For The Sky’ to create a space that meets the needs of every age group. The arrangement of the spaces aims to exploit the view of the surrounding scenery. Due to limited space, each green area is planned to serve a specific function and to provide a sense of transparency and spaciousness throughout the entire sky deck. The recreation areas are divided into three main zones consisting of a water recreation area in the centre, featuring the adult leisure pool, a children’s pool and a timber deck. Second, an outdoor activity zone, dedicated for socialising, is equipped with two separate outdoor cooking and dining pavilions. The third activity zone is the Sky Garden which features an open lawn surrounded by a meandering jogging path, earth mounds, a pavilion, reflexology path and lush plantings. Sky Loft Premier Suites is a 33-storey serviced apartment block, which is a luxury, resort style development, located in the heart of Bukit Indah Township Johor Bahru, Johor. Within limited spaces, the creative landscape design deliniates zones which are spacious, airy and relaxing and provide a calm abode for the residents. The green spaces here are planned and designed with careful integration of spaces and maximise the use of each available corner. In the meantime, it solves engineering structural limitations and creates a landscape with views of the greeneries, while expressing a sense of style, luxury and intimacy to the residents. The main swimming pool not only functions as a pool but also as a cooling medium to reduce urban heat and temperatures to create a relaxed surrounding. While the covered linkway is designed with a glass roof and wooden lattice to provide shade and shelter, it also allows natural light to penetrate and provide a view of the greeneries as a sight for sore eyes.

RAJA MUFIK BUNGALOW Raja Mufik Bungalow is designed to respond to the immediate climate, employing effective open planning to create the experience of communing with nature.
The Raja Mufik house interior is transparent with floor-to-ceiling high glass louvres replacing conventional walls. The louvres can be opened to allow natural breezes to circulate throughout the house and create an illusion of a wall-less space in the courtyard garden within. The private inner courtyard contains a swimming pool which merges with the natural lake at the rear of the house, with a pristine water-to-water view, while the spa is designed as a lounge built into the pool. Water elements dominate the interior with a huge internal water garden serving to keep the house cool and work beautifully as a soothing backdrop to the prayer pavilion.

SIV CHATEAU COUNTRY HEIGHTS
Mediterranean garden spaces are mysteriously connected with each other through meandering paths with private spaces, walls, trellis and hedges used to buffer the internal spaces for endless discoveries. The gardens at SIV Chateau, set within the tropical climes of Malaysia, are a landscape design which creates spaces which mimic the Mediterranean style. Enclosed space is one of the garden characteristics which encourages exploration. Materials such as bricks, aggregate, natural stones, pots and metal grills are used in the garden, not to mention the multitude of colourful flowers and plants which face the window and doors in order to maximize the view from the inside out. The placement of the fountain in the centre of the courtyard definitely creates a calm ambiance for the reading room opposite.

THE ARC BANDAR RIMBAYU
The Arc, Bandar Rimbayu, creates a recreational area that is fresh and safe for residents. Inspired by the concept of ‘Embracing Life Within Nature’, this design ensures recreational spaces that are set within vast open outdoor green spaces and are semi-covered.
At the most fundamental level, the landscape design provides shelter for community activities and functiones as a place for social interaction, recreational needs, and communal and sporting events. The park is carefully and skillfully designed to ensure it is user friendly for all ages, thus creating a safe atmosphere. Above all is the gigantic suspended green elevated space providing additional open spaces for joggers, kite flying or simply watching a friendly football match on the lawn below. This spectacular feature has become the icon for Bandar Rimbayu and the heart beat of this new township.

Swan Lake is one of the many parks in Eco Majestic, which has been completed within the sales gallery and show village of Eco Majestic Township. This park proudly stands in grandeur with an iconic Union Pavilion crafted to perfection. The 5.4 acre Swan Lake is the first community park within Eco Majestic which creatively transforms the lake from existing detention ponds into a vibrant eco-system for indigenous wildlife and plants. To further preserve the environment, 176 existing trees from various species were successfully preserved and transplanted to this park. With the theme ‘Botanical Oasis’, the park is complimented with a grand design and intricate detail inspired by symbols of beauty and grace, true love, and fidelity. Swan Lake is divided into several zones, characterized by their function; Union Pavilion, Petals Park, Melody Brook and Ever Bridge, just to name a few.

THE GARDENS OF HUA WEI SHENZHEN, CHINA
The gardens of Hua Wei are designed as a place of privacy and seclusion, away from the noise and activity of surrounding Shenzhen city life. The design takes its reference from the natural picturesque rolling hills, green valleys, meandering streams and changing colours of the landscape. The landscape was formed by excavating the centre and south east of the building site, creating a sunken garden in which 3 small conference buildings were placed. These were then surrounded by an elevated sculptured landform. Water is used extensively throughout the gardens and courtyards to create a dramatic ambiance with movement, light, sound and constantly changing reflections adding to the landscape. Cascades and waterfalls reinforce the sense of level changes while a series of water channels, juxtaposed against the natural landforms, cut through the rolling terrain into the central garden, making reference to the built forms and reinforcing the geometry of the site. Southville City, a 428-acre integrated township, offers a wide range of quality new home styles and is at the forefront of environmental initiatives with an emphasis on regenerative landscaping and promoting healthy lifestyles. The pioneer project of Southville Park is the impetus for greater things to come. This pioneer green space, which spurs the development of Southville, is the Southville Park, located next to the Sales Gallery. Built as one of the many green spaces in Southville, this park creates harmonious green areas alongside the existing surrounding hilly forest. As the main feature of the park, the retention pond, converted to a lake, serves as the main waterbody and the heart of the recreational zone. In this park, nothing goes to waste as lake water is used for irrigation while tiles and hardscape materials are partly chosen from recycled bricks and tiles. COUNTRY GARDEN DANGA BAY
Country Garden, Danga Bay, is an exclusive integrated development consisting of luxury serviced apartments, commercial, leisure and entertainment amenities, all spanning across 57 acres of land. These lifestyle amenities will soon benefit from a seafront, one-stop commercial, entertainment and dining city. The first parcel of this development is the Clubhouse and Seafront Garden Oasis which serve as the catalyst for future residential development and retail outlets. The completed club house facilities, pool, marina, seafront garden oasis and dining street have become a new leisure destination in Johor Bahru, with lush tropical gardens, themed ‘Underwater Coral Landscape’. This project restores the existing neglected bayside to greener open spaces for public use with themed attractions. Upon entering the Clubhouse, a green oasis is presented for the eyes, where an infinity pool overflows to the seafront man-made beach, surrounded by palm clusters and lushly planted shrubs and other succulents. Visitors will feel they are walking through underwater coral gardens and delight in the sculptures of sea creatures decorating each corner. A white sandy beach runs along the entire strip of the garden, complete with tropical huts. Towards dusk, visitors can enjoy golden sunsets and gentle breezes along the beach. The Firefly Park @ Clementi is designed to work in harmony with the immediate surrounding and to provide the community with a place of serenity based on the ‘play-event-garden’ approach. The rustic garden characteristic is set to take advantage of the existing old, large canopy greenery while introducing minimal garden components that look as if they have been there for years. Each of the garden components is designed as an abstraction element of nature and resembles the pleasingly well-worn look of wood, steel and masonry works. The design principle is based on the idea of working with minimal means and maximum abstraction, instead of directly imitating nature.

Setia Indah Park improves the landscape and environment quality of 3 detention ponds by strictly maintaining ecology and nature while restoring biodiversity.
The aim here is to restore and improve the detention ponds for the usage of the community, improve the landscape and plantings and increase biodiversity of the area. The park also serves as additional open space for the community to meet or conduct leisure activities. A series of weirs were built, with a walking path, to allow accessibility around the water’s edge. Aquatic plants and trees were introduced to further enrich the ecosystem.

1 Malaysia Gardens is a Thematic Garden showcasing our Malaysian cultural identity through the design of the hard landscape elements and various plant collections interwoven within the cultural landscape.

At first glance, the garden entrance is a highlight. A gateway style pergola uses the ‘tikar’ weaving design pattern within the paving to depict the Malay traditional hand weaving design. Upon entering the garden, ‘Wau’ sculptures of various forms create an image of a village landscape, including views of a paddy field beyond. At the front, there are multi-cultural pavilions representing the ethnic groups of Malaysia within the theme gardens. The slope forms the Terrace Garden with layers of plants comprising the garden’s medicinal and herbal collection. The traditional cultural landscape is further enhanced with a display of bird cages leading to a traditional well, with Malay fishing boats in various shapes planted with various types of ethno-botanic plants. The planting design is focused on a collection of ethno-botanic plants of the Malay World with a hierarchy of plants representing the profile of the coastal area, lowland and the highland.

SETIA CITY PARK SETIA ALAM
The park was inspired by the idea of an archipelago, with islands of activity almost or completely surrounded by an expansive mass of water, which, for ecological functionality, promotes biodiversity of the local ecosystem. Setia City Park, located in Setia Alam, Shah Alam, covers 7.25 hectares. For ecological functionality, the waters of the ‘garden archipelago’ double as a bio-retention pond. The focal point is the large oval lawn which accommodates a wide range of activities, including a performance stage. Bridges were designed to connect all the activity islands within the design. Two ponds with timber decks were planned across the Persiaran Setia Dagang. Plants are grouped in patterns to create visual interest which echo the central park design forms, while at the same time, act as an essential phytoremediation agent. SENIBONG COVE JOHOR BAHRU
Senibong Cove spreads across a sprawling site of 208 acres of riverfront land and mangrove swamps with extensive water bodies of the marina basin and the water canal network that extends from the sea into the waterfront residential areas. Designed to be a natural retreat which retains the natural terrain, the design takes full advantage of the surrounding natural environment. As one of the pioneers in modern marina developments in Johor Bahru, landscape approaches were adopted to develop a distinct identity for the development that are in context with the character of the existing landscape and the architectural intent of modern contemporary adaptation of tropical architecture incorporating a strong ‘maritime’ theme. Inherent to the site is the existing vegetation and scenic value of the water environment of Lunchoo River and mature mangrove swamps, and the backdrop qualities of the secondary forest in the distant hills. By adopting the ‘minimalist’ approach, a timeless modern contemporary language has been chosen for the design of all built elements within the landscaped areas. The park consists of an entrance gateway, avenue planting, a lake, lawn, amphitheater, children’s play area and a show gallery. The focal point is the 10m high water fountain, which is enhanced with colourful LED lights at night. For the young ones, the waterplay area and playground provide clean and safe water features. Truly, a family destination to keep everyone occupied.

CAHAYA SPK CENTRAL PARK SHAH ALAM
Cahaya SPK is a unique township created within the splendour of a rainforest in the heart of Shah Alam. This resort township conceptualises its development with a ‘Living With Nature’ theme, emphasising a perfect fusion of natural tropical charm and human habitation. Within its pristine setting, the 16 acre Leisure Park is the backbone of the open spaces for the entire development. The Park embraces the undulating natural terrain with a manmade lake linked with a canal. Thoughtfully planned spaces for leisure and recreational activities are provided, interspersed with a 3.2 km long walkway and bicycle track surrounding the lake. Two water jets, 20 and 10 metres high, were installed, along with lifelike bird sculptures, giving a dramatic view towards the lake. To achieve the natural settings, the trees were planted randomly and in clusters to give shade along the walkways and activity areas. Herb Gardens were also allocated at several corners to add interest and provide information for young urbanites.

Walkways shaded by leafy trees, impeccably manicured lawns & picture perfect views are among the many fascinating elements that can be found in this green paradise. Themed ‘Nature at Your Doorstep’, the eco-friendly community of Setia Eco Cascadia possesses a linear garden which links the rear spaces of all residences into a network of green connectors. It creates refreshing paths where residents take a tranquil walk from their back garden through the greenery. POINT 92
DAMANSARA PERDANA Point 92 is a 14 storey office building named after the 0.92 acre site in which it is located. Due to the humble size, there was a need to maximize its architectural floor space for greenery within a very limited building footprint. The idea is, first, to craft a distinctive office building with a unique character, using simple local materials and construction methods. Secondly, to inject a strong connection with nature in order to create a comfortable and productive working environment for the occupants. Thirdly, the building should be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. 600 saplings of local forest species were under planted with ferns, along the planters, from the arrival court to the office lobby. These junior trees were closely planted to recreate a forest environment. Benches extrude from a series of steps leading towards the lobby and provide office users or visitors with a comfortable semi-outdoor seating area under the tree canopy. Saplings planted also act as a ‘green’ backdrop to the glazed office lobby, help to screen off busy traffic from the adjacent road and also help to reduce the heat of the morning sun.

THE SANDCRAWLER SINGAPORE
Lucasfilm’s Singapore facility, The Sandcrawler, located at Fusionopolis, has 8 floors of office and retail space and a 100-seat theatre. The 22,500 square-metre U-shaped architectural form enables light to penetrate from both sides of the floors and shelters the central public garden on the sloping roof of several floors above underground parking and IT studios. The landscape design principles are based on the interplay of landscape forms and harmonious co-existence of the architectural design. The landscape reinforces the creation of a lush and tropical rainforest environment set within the built environment that replicates ‘Bukit Timah Nature Reserve’. Water meanders throughout the landscape, flowing through the forest, cooling the space and providing mysterious visual and acoustic qualities along with a ‘Yoda’ sculpture, placed within the forest waiting to be discovered. Winding pathways, secluded seating and landscape decks located at varied planes, create a mystical environment to the forest landscape with 186 species of trees, palms, shrubs, ground covers, bamboo and aquatic plants planted within the 6,500m2 garden. The forest species resemble an instant rainforest environment that restores the natural habitat and attracted birds and insects.

Ativo Plaza is the first development within Damansara Avenue new township. In this development, the landscape takes primary role in setting the footprint of the building and sees the building sitting within a parkland.

In order to achieve the parkland setting, 2.67 acres from an overall 5.73 acres have been designed as landscape spaces. The building footprint is simplified, generally a series of rectangular blocks at the ground level, in order to allow landscape treatment to render the development. A ‘sculptural’ folded landscape emerges from the ground to form a unique landscape which wraps and warps the primary elements of wind, water, wood, stone, steel, leaf and life into horizontal and vertical planes, forming a coherent integrated environment for contemporary lifestyle living. BELUM RAINFOREST RESORT PHASE 2 PULAU BANDING
The Belum Rainforest Resort is one of Malaysia’s premier ecotourism holiday destinations. Set amidst a tropical paradise, it is everything nature-lovers and holiday-goers expect in a getaway destination: complete relaxation and serenity, stunning views and surroundings, adventure, and the chance to get close to nature. The newly developed spacious accommodation has been tastefully finished with sustainable, simple, yet elegant furniture and fittings. Visitors are offered a choice of lake or garden view, yet all are encompassed by the tranquility of the Belum Temengor Rainforest Complex. Inspired by Malaysian traditional architecture, suites were built with ecological design in mind and come complete with a unique combination of contemporary and traditional furnishings. Raw and untreated surfaces allows climbers and plants to grow freely and be part of the structure, as can be found in the forest ecosystem. The building is intimately detailed and constructed. The structures are cognisant of spatial dimensions, allowing an appropriate feeling of auesterity which contrasts with the lushness of the forest. Natural light was articulated into the house through skylights and voids. This reduces the consumption of artificial light for even a corner at the lower ground level. Series of terraces, cascading from the main hall, open out to the lap pool which is cantilevered towards the lake.

ONE CITY SUBANG JAYA
One City is an integrated commercial development that spans across 77 acres of land, consisting of retail shops, a shopping mall, offices suites, an entertainment hub, hotel, meeting facilities and also a magnificent glass skydeck. Landscape elements play a vital role in all 5 phases of the development which emphasise on ‘Green Lifestyle Living’ and this helps to increase property values. Here, the plants chosen are focused on tall and lush trees to balance the building’s architectural design with bold colours of grey. With a touch of green, it actually softens the building façade. To further treat the car park void and vertical wall on the building façade, climbers are planted on intermittent levels to allow the plants to climb up and cover the building in a short time. Above all, the main features at One City is the Skypark which is also a dining floor overlooking the city. The forest planting along the edge of the building creates a relaxing ambiance for diners while the middle of the skydeck is planted with aquatic plant species in a very minimal and clean form, punctuated with glass flooring, allowing visitors to view the mall from above.

SOCSO REHABILITATION CENTRE MELAKA
This is the first rehabilitation complex in the world to combine medical and vocational rehabilitation within an allied health institute. Under SOCSO’s ‘Return to Work’ programme, disabled patients undergo physical and vocational rehabilitation in a conducive green environment. Located on 55 acres of undulating landscape, a ‘primary spine’ for walking, wheelchairs and buggies sequntially links the various clusters of buildings. This complex, certified ‘green’ by the Malaysian ‘Green Building Index’, was designed to allow nature to flourish via its lush, expansive landscape and ‘spirituality’ to grow as an important element, integral to the healing process.

KL HERITAGE TRAIL 3 KUALA LUMPUR
Kuala Lumpur Heritage Trail 3 is one of the early work packages along the 10.7km ‘River of Life’ project. The historical, geographical and social heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur is surrounded by impressive civic and historical buildings which make for an iconic downtown heritage site. This urban heritage trail project was aimed at further conserving the historical fabric of the area. The team’s main aim was to create a series of sculptures to personify and capture the buzz of street life. The proposal is to place a series of ‘Chinese Paper Cutting’ sculptures, which depict the nostalgic memories and visions of renowned Malaysian artist, Stephanie Kuen, to represent life around the traditional coffee shops of Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur, as an the image of Malaysia’s passion for street food, themed: ‘A Bowl Full of Memories’. A journey to Setia Eco Cascadia is not like any other, as you are constantly distracted by the beautifully manicured landscape on each side of the road. Cascade planters of various levels create interesting undulating landforms a feast for the eyes. The design of the entrance stands proud with a stunning green wall which encourages an appreciation of the natural environment. Here, hardscapes and green elements are blended together to become a bastion of elegance. The existing undulating terrain is played to its best advantage in the design to further accentuate the concept of a cascading landscape, while Frangipani trees planted on the cascading terrace enrich one’s viewing pleasure.

Eco Sky takes its inspiration from our solar system and galaxy, spinning through space. The green belt of trees on the perimeter orbit the site, the sales gallery and thus the gardens attract each other like two molecules coexisting harmoniously. ‘The Galaxy’ themed landscape is featured through the tier garden driveway, screened by specially selected plants set on the site and confines the views within, making intimate space throughout the outdoor rooms. Upon closer inspection, a water journey, aptly called ‘The Twilight’, rivets your attention, drawing you to the Sales Gallery as if in an out of this world experience. A water body is elevated above the ground level where the Ficus are set and the nearby raised stone platforms guide you to the outdoor ceiling which makes you feel as if you are truly in outer space. ‘The Galaxy’ motif was used to enrich the design with a planting palette resembling the cosmic aspects of nature. The native vegetation represents the idea that we are rooted deep within nature, created by it, shaped by it, yet ultimately able to embrace Eco Sky in its complete immersive context. RAJA TUN UDA LIBRARY SHAH ALAM
Raja Tun Uda Library is a modern public library, adjacent to Sultan Abdul Aziz Golf Club in Shah Alam. Overlooking a beautiful lake with lush greenery, this development is known as the ‘Library in a Park’. The verdant landscape surrounding the library’s setting is clearly evident of the ‘Library in a Park’ design approach. Upon entering via the main road, gigantic Rain Trees greet visitors along the way. Pathways from the public car park to the library offer a pleasant and soothing environment with calm lake views punctuated by weeping Tea Trees and the colourful blooms of Spathodea Trees. Along the lake edge, one can spot beautiful water lilies and aquatic plants in full bloom, adding colour along the journey while one takes a leisurely stroll around the development. Ara trees, such as Ficus elastica, Ficus bengalensis and Ficus benjamina are planted to merge with the existing vegetation of the surrounding area. Optimising the rolling terrain with an open deck restaurant perched on the hill provides an extensive view of the picturesque lake with the Shah Alam skyline in the background. PUTRAJAYA URBAN FARMING PUTRAJAYA
Residents here have been cultivating idle land through a community gardening project for years and are hoping, with support from Perbadanan Putrajaya, to take it to the next level, as ‘Putrajaya Urban Farming’. The ‘Putrajaya Urban Farming’ Programme is a pioneer smart partnership programme between Perbadanan Putrajaya, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and Koperasi Komuniti Penduduk Putrajaya Berhad (KKPP) under the Local Agenda 21 Programme to make Putrajaya a sustainable city. Two green houses have been built in Precinct 8 and 9, Putrajaya, and planted with approximately 500 Rock Melons and 300 Capsicum, using the fertigation system. Among the aims of this programme is the cultivation of urban community farming activities for food security, especially for dealing with the uncertainties of climate change. This programme also encourages food cultivation for local consumption and trains the younger generation to be involved in fresh produce production.

PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY & CYCLEWAY
TANJUNG ARU TO UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SABAH The Kota Kinabalu Pedestrian Walkway and Cycleway project aims to make Kota Kinabalu a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city in order to provide choices for urban commuters and to ease traffic congestion within the city. The study covered various aspects in order to provide solutions for the design of cycling routes. Among those aspects were the existing components such as informal bicycle routes, connectors, open spaces, sport and recreational facilities, land use, places of interest, vegetation, users’ needs and also on-going and future development plans. The findings of the study will assist the design and construction of a safe and attractive cycleway between Tanjung Aru and UMS in order to attract the maximum usage of the pedestrians and cyclists. It is also looking into making cycling a popular exercise for all ages and walks of life as well as providing open spaces and recreation facilities along this route.

SETIA ECOHILL SEMENYIH
Setia Ecohill Master Plan is at the pinnacle of landscape architecture’s triumphs. A former low prospect oil palm plantation is made over to become a livable township nestled within a landscaped parkland environment.
Restoring 700 acres of uninhabitable landscape was achieved through extensive landscape analysis, using guiding principals, such as mental mapping to gauge the landform character at a micro level. This allowed the team to sensitively approach the site with three main themes, the Brooks, the Hills and the Parklands, to replenish the many areas that are now iconic landscapes within the Ecohill master plan. The reinvigoration of social activities and mature appreciation will make Ecohill the core place for living a healthy lifestyle and inspire future development to incorporate recycling, site specific play spaces and take full advantage of landform characteristics to make a sustainable, green and safer tomorrow.

The brief was to design a unique park that would create a strong identity for the development and provide a benchmark for the design of new urban parks within the greater Kuala Lumpur area. One of the primary objectives of the park was to combine the landed areas of the park and the retention pond water as integrated entities that will provide a number of benefits for residents and improve the inherent quality of the park environment. The park should be a safe and barrier free pedestrian zone which blends the park components together, along with the water features, to avoid the conventional solution of a pond with a perimeter path. It also strives to promote and maintain the highest achievable water quality and rich biodiversity. Above all, applying sustainable methods and understanding of the natural processes were essential in every stage of planning and design.

NUSAJAYA TECH PARK NUSAJAYA
Nusajaya Tech Park is an industrial park. It is committed to an ecological green environment incorporating a vibrant colourful ambience within the industrial precinct with 20% of green spaces. The inventory and analysis of Nusajaya Tech Park shows the importance of creating vast green spaces to reduce urban heat islands, improving living and working environments as well as taking the holistic approach of sustainable development one step further. A drastic approach was made in this study of the existing layout by introducing green hearts, which dominantly serve the whole area for the purpose of working, investing, visiting and living. Here, landscape areas become the most important asset of the development not only for marketing purposes but also sustaining the environment for future generations.

ELMINA GALLERY DENAI ALAM
Elmina Sales Gallery presented the ideal groundwork for a development concept of the whole Elmina City Township, which captured the theme of the ‘Essence of Plantation Life’. The strong identity and message delivered by the Elmina Sales Gallery can be the story of Elmina itself for visitors who come to experience and feel the ambience of the development. The concept of the design for Elmina East is towards a sustainable landscape design, which can be seen in terms of materials chosen, functionality of design and the space of the surrounding area.

SKYZ RESIDENCE
Recognizing the increasing impact of global warming, the study adopted many energy-efficient and environmental friendly practices and materials to ensure the sustainability of this development. The focus of the study and proposals are on water-efficient appliances and fixtures, rain water harvesting, natural ventilation for bathrooms, vertical plantings and provision of interconnected pedestrian walkways which act as exercise paths. The materials and finishes are specifically from ‘green’ sources and sustainable products including the low volatile organic compounds (V.O.C) and most are manufactured locally. With the project parameters confining a small area at the peak of the hill, the surrounding natural vegetation was left largely untouched and preserved. If there were any native animals within the project site and adjacent development areas, their migration would be to a new habitat.

SIGNATURE LAKE EAST LEDANG, NUSAJAYA
The Signature Lake design is a man-made retention pond or lake system which involves interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure that its function improves the ecological, aesthetic quality of the area and provides recreational opportunities for the community. The master plan was developed based on evaluation of the locational context, access, viewpoints, site conditions and the existing terrain. Based on the analysis, the lake is divided into four zones according to the type of recreational activities and proposed provision of landscape amenities for the visitors. The upper part of the lake system is the Wetland Zone or Ecological Park which includes wetland trails and an area for camping activities. A Thematic Garden is proposed nearby, inspired by the legendary folklore of Puteri Gunung Ledang with a Malay styled pavilion, Laman Puteri with artifacts sculpture and a well, whilst a series of water gargoyles add the splashing sounds of water. This study covered a 781 hectare area and 63 hectares of water bodies along the 10.7km long stretch. The goal is to transform the rivers into a vibrant and thriving waterfront by 2020, by inviting original ideas and excellent designs for planning and an iconic waterfront destination for the city. The study explores the past, present and future of Kuala Lumpur. It examines the challenges and opportunities in various aspects such as river reserves, risk of flooding, infrastructure along the river, economy revitalization. For the study, goals and objectives are aligned to make the river a newly vibrant waterfront for Kuala Lumpur.

The intention of this study is to create a vivid and adaptive urban plaza with culturally significant values to create a strong sense of confidence in Kuala Lumpur’s urban public spaces.
