Foreword from IFLA APR The International Federation of Landscape Architects Asia Pacific Region (IFLA APR), would like to congratulate ILAM for their excellent effort to organise the MLAA 2012 awards. This event is being held in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month 2013, which is a worldwide annual celebration in April. We are very excited to be part of the event to give support and recognition for the great achievements by the Malaysian landscape architecture profession. IFLA envisions landscape architecture to be a premier international profession by the year 2020. IFLA represents the landscape architecture profession globally, providing leadership and networks which support the development of the profession and its effective participation in the realisation of attractive, equitable and sustainable environments. Judging by the high quality entries, the MLAA Awards is definitely a noble effort by ILAM. It is hoped that this commendable effort to promote and educate the general public on the contribution of landscape architecture to the living environment and nation building will stimulate interest among other member countries to emulate this shining example from Malaysia. Congratulations once again to ILAM and all the winners. Thank you.

INSTITUTE OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS MALAYSIA ILAM For the past 30 years, landscape architects have often been the unsung heroes of Malaysia’s development projects. These passionate individuals work tirelessly to balance the needs of the environment alongside the construction of physical features such as buildings and public spaces.
The Landscape Architecture profession in Malaysia was initially formed under the name Angkatan Landskap Arkitek Malaysia (ALAM), on 24 September 1981. This group comprised various professionals, semi-professionals, students and private individuals who shared a passion for organising and developing green spaces. In 1982, ILAM was accepted as a member of the Malaysian Professional Centre or Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (BIM). Subsequently, international recognition came by becoming a member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1984. With an increasing number of local graduates from Landscape Architecture courses, there was a need to move the association forward to represent all new and existing members. As a result, on December 14, 1987, ALAM transformed itself into the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM).

SIBU JAYA Sibu Jaya development is based on the concept of a self-contained township and spans an overall gross area of approximately 1,400 acres. The development comprises a mixed array of residential homes, shop houses, a commercial centre, high rise commercial buildings, industrial lots, schools and amenities. The development is a model township showcasing a combination of city amenities with countryside qualities and upon its full completion, Sibu Jaya will house a population of approximately 50,000 people. Sibu Jaya is centrally located along the Pan-Borneo highway, which is the first trunk road linking Kuching and Miri. It is also a mere 1 km from Sibu Airport and 26 km from Sibu town. With the Durin Bridge now completed, Sibu Jaya has become a transit point for long distance travelers, yet offering its residents an ideal environment in which to work and play. Besides fully self-contained convenience, there is also an incomparable park ambience to promote better work productivity. The smart partnership with the Housing Development Corporation of Sarawak has successfully transformed Sibu Jaya by focussing on improving the lifestyle of the community through better-design houses, community-friendly environment and improving common amenities, facilities and infrastructure. Among the lifestyle elements injected are: • 2km main boulevard • 40 acre Green Lung • 3.5 acre Green Belt • Upgraded affordable homes (bigger and better quality) • New medium / high-end homes (Taman Crystal) • Shophouses / Commercial Centre with modern concept • Provision of more amenities such as police station, post office, etc Based on integrated planning for a more community-based township, Sibu Jaya was awarded the Judges Merit in the Planning Excellence Award (under Community Development - Planning Achievement Category) in a National Level Competition organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners, in April 2008.

MALAYSIA LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2012
Each year, ILAM presents the outstanding Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards to Malaysian landscape architecture consultancy firms, developers, government agencies, researchers and students for projects, research papers or design works completed in Malaysia and abroad. These awards honour the best in landscape architecture from various aspects of the industry. The awards are open to all project submissions, completed at least ONE YEAR previously, and which have not won any previous ILAM Awards. The Awards are divided into seven categories: 1. Landscape Design & Planning Awards 2. Landscape Study & Analysis Awards 3. Landscape Innovation Awards 4. Property Developer Awards in Landscape Planning & Development 5. Green City Awards 6. Landscape Research Awards 7. Student Design Awards The Jury Process The jury process for the Awards is “blind”. In other words, the identities of the entrants and creative teams are not revealed to the jury. Members of the Professional Awards Jury, as well as the firms, organisations, and the agencies they represent, are not eligible to enter the Professional Awards program. The decision process takes three days to review a total of 88 entries and a day of site visits to decide the recipient of the Excellence Award. Jury Report The Panel of Jurors for the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2012 was given the task to assess and evaluate the submissions. Upon convening, the Panel found that the submissions were many and varied. Just as varied as the projects submitted were the experience and practice of the submitting landscape architects. The Panel noted the wide range - from novice or graduate landscape architects to those that have been practicing in the profession for more than thirty years; from a solo landscape architect, to a multi-disciplinary team, led by a landscape architect; and from private practice to public agencies. It was also noteworthy that our local practitioners submitted high-end landscape projects completed abroad – Malaysian landscape architects who have gained international recognition. The Panel was indeed impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm shown by the junior and senior fraternity in promoting quality improvements in the humanized landscape, through their submissions. After profiling the submissions, the Panel found assessing and screening projects for the Awards both a challenging and apprehensive process. It was difficult to apply a single thread of argument across the projects which were categorically and typologically distinctive. Each differed in design process, creative solution, and impact. Nonetheless, throughout the 3 days of evaluation, a common theme ruled, i.e. degree of complexity in landscape planning, design, and construction. This then became central in assessing each and every submission. In evaluating each submission, the Panel found that the complexity in each project was directly proportional to the depth of design process, creativity of solution, and extent of impact. As such, the inherent strength and merit of each project emerged and stood out on its own merits. The Panel of Jurors would like to thank all the submitting landscape architects and congratulate the winners. As a fraternity, they have helped to give visibility to the spectrum of intra-disciplines within landscape architecture and create landmarks in the profession, both in Malaysia and abroad.

Kayangan Heights is an exclusive low-density, guarded bungalow development which comprises 166.74ha of pristine tropical rainforest. Planned as a low density residential development, complete with tropical forest landscape details, Kayangan Heights spreads across this natural environment with several precincts of bungalows such as Teratai Villas, Kenanga Woods and Begonia Crescent.
01 Meadows grow wild amidst the parklands
Each of the facilities and development parcels are designed to ensure they maximize the green experience. Either along the driveway or in each residential plot, visitors are surrounded by natural green spaces. Streams, a lake, and lush meadows are among the elements one can spy throughout Kayangan Heights. Green pathways are provided along the parkland as connectors between each built element.
03 The resort style tropical design welcomes visitors to Kayangan Heights
Recreational facilities, such as the club house, are designed to incorporate the stunning backdrop of the nearby forest, which can be seen from the terminus of the infinity pool. This building is also adjacent to a small stream, a garden, a playground, a BBQ area, gym facilities and a tennis court. Kayangan Heights takes pride in the value given and commitment shown to its surrounding environment. Sustainability is also ensured thanks to the preservation of the existing forest. Here, considerations were made for the protection of existing trees during the planning of the building footprint, for the careful placement of climbers planted on the built structures, through preserving the natural streams to be utilized as part of the green network and to ensure the existing biodiversity is maintained. Only with all these commitments in place can we provide a high quality of life for the residents of Kayangan Heights and ensure each homecoming experience is a rewarding one.

03 Laman Bunga Rampai, located in Kota Iskandar, is an integral part of Bangunan Sultan Ismail (BSI), and is one of the most important and iconic landmarks of the progressive state of Johor. The overall design principle of Bangunan Sultan Ismail was to create an Islamic and Moorish Andalusia-style project which would incorporate Malay garden elements. A perfect example is the pattern of the Laman Bunga Rampai, which is arranged in symmetrical quadrants, inspired by the Chahar Bagh concept of a fourfold garden. The design of Laman Bunga Rampai strives to represent and honour the beautiful gardens found in hundreds of peaceful kampungs, or villages, across Malaysia. The development at Laman Bunga Rampai aims to ensure sustainability for all life forms in the local environment. The selection of plants for Laman Bunga Rampai was carefully undertaken in order to preserve threatened and endangered plant species for future generations. In addition, Laman Bunga Rampai showcases a healthy biodiversity, which includes biological and social resources for visitors. The garden is designed to not only enhance and complement the architectural and aesthetic beauty of the surrounding buildings or for simply basking in the splendour of its green scenery and exquisite panoramic views. It is also designed to highlight the Malay Garden environment as an avenue to educate the younger generation and to preserve nature, culture and traditions for all time. 01 Laman Bunga Rampai at night 02 The symmetrical pattern strives to represent and honour the beautiful gardens found locally in Johor

Serenity Park is a themed garden residential development which provides a safe and spacious environment for its community members. The development’s emphasis on spaciousness is further evidenced by the application of the concept of garden living. The 31 gardens and open spaces make up more than 15% of the total acreage (the authority requirement is only 10%) while the density is reduced to a mere 2.7 units per acre, far below the industry norm of 10 units per acre. The 31 gardens, which spread over 7 parks spanning the development, make the grounds much more than a site for a home. Individually themed, the seven parks correspond to the 7 days in a week, while the 31 gardens relate to 31 days in a month. Each precious space provides residents of the development with a different garden theme to experience and enjoy every day of the month. 03
The ‘green continuum’ concept integrates buildings and gardens through a continuous network of linear parks and open spaces. Residents experience easy access to all green areas, while at the same time enjoying lush, shaded and comfortable living. 01 Green pocket spaces at Serenity Park 02 100 year old frangipani trees preserved in the central garden 03 Green space allocation was a priority during the design process 04 The Central Garden

WATERFALLS OF SETIA ECO CASCADIA By weaving natural elements alongside urban living requirements, Mother Nature is welcomed as a lifelong companion, not an unnecessary casualty. Hence, the landscape, terrain and ecosystem of this development are natural and in harmony with humanity and its local setting.
Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook 2012

The concept of Setia Eco Cascadia development is a simple, yet surprisingly novel approach. It is about eco-living in the heart of a city, which will certainly set the benchmark for all future developments in the region. This surprising development features water, in many forms, across the entire estate. With the preservation of the natural terrain, different levels provide vantage points for breathtaking panoramic views of the many surrounding waterfalls and ponds. To maintain its eco-friendly nature, a Bioswale, a unique ecologicallyattuned facility which filters rainwater before discharging it into the drainage system, is incorporated into the design. Water from upper level ponds cascades over 12 metre high majestic waterfalls and, along the 60 metre wide terrain, the water, rushing over different sections of the stunning rock-work, imitates nature at its best. The crashing water then flows into the main lake where, together with the waterfall, a grand and luscious entrance is created for residents and visitors. The drama and power of this stunning piece never fails to invite people to bask in its cool, refreshing beauty. Setia Eco Cascadia is a green wonderland where cascading landscapes are the key element, literally bringing a breath of fresh air to modern living.

The two buildings are separated by a central circular lawn, linked by a pedestrian walkway. They sit on a curvilinear footprint of approximately 22.4 acres and are surrounded by 19.7 acres of beautiful landscape. The selection of the plants at Cluster C2S Complex plays an important role in the preservation of threatened and endangered plants species for future generations. From the biodiversity enhancement aspect, the forest landscape has attracted birds, insects and small mammals. Damselfly & Geyser Creek were built with the intention to provide a space for recreational activities ideal for joggers, cyclists and pedestrians who wish to spend an afternoon strolling around the gardens. The creeks promote biodiversity with a variety of plantings which attract wildlife. With garden amenities such as benches, gazebos, a boardwalk and pergola along the garden walkway, it connects seamlessly with the community and is easily accessible from any direction. Damselfly Creek is named for the presence of the many damselflies in the area which indicates the unpolluted water quality of the creek. Located at the highest peak of the development, the garden offers pleasant views with gentle breezes.

The Urban Design Guidelines of this development focuses on 5 precincts within the waterfront development. They are identified as Nakhoda, Laksamana, Tanjung, Bahtera and Puteri precincts. For example, in The Bahtera precinct, namely the Satellite Club House, landscape elements respond to local cultural conditions through the use of materials, textures and forms which celebrate Malaysia’s natural landscape. The concept is to create a bold, contemporary tropical landscape in scale with each distinctive precinct of the development. Developing strong indoor and outdoor relationships between commercial and retail and the adjacent public laneways and plazas, residential and the adjacent gardens, to activate and enliven the public domain, is a huge challenge yet one which Puteri Harbour takes onboard with passion and drive. 05

Ecohydrology Management concept is an approach which quantifies and explains the relationship between hydrological processes and biotic dynamics at the catchment level in Putrajaya.

Perbadanan Putrajaya adopted the Ecohydrology Management approach to better manage the quality and quantity of surface run-off within the catchment areas of the massive, newly developed administrative city. The Putrajaya Lake and Wetland area was constructed to control the quality of the run-off, with consideration given to the processing of possible sources of all pollutants in the catchment area, including stakeholders’ activities. It also ensures aesthetic viability and sustains good water quality, suitable for recreational use. Ecohydrology Management concept is based on the assumption that sustainable development of water resources is dependent on the ecosystem’s ability to restore and maintain the evolutionarily established process of water and nutrient circulation and energy flows, at the basin level. Amongst the most important approaches of this management concept is the application of integrated management of stakeholders and activities which involve neighboring stakeholders in the catchment area. All possible sources of pollution within the catchment need to be understood, identified and defined in order to clearly undertake appropriate management and maintenance measures. The application of the ecohydrology concept using wetlands and lakes can be seen as a successful approach to pursue sustainability, by bringing nature back into the urban surrounding and benefiting communities. The Ecohydrology Management of the lake and wetland project in the Putrajaya Urban Ecosystem project received recognition by being awarded a Gold Award under the Project Award category by the International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom Awards 2012) at AL-AIN CITY, United Arab Emirates (22 – 26 November 2012). 01

The size of Taman Sahabat, or Friendship Park, in Kuching, Sarawak, is approximately 7 acres. The development of the park was jointly financed by the government, alongside contributions from the People’s Republic of China and sponsors from the private sectors, both in Kuching and China. The design of the park is divided into two coexisting yet independent sections; Malaysia Park and China Park. These two parks, much like the ancient yin and yang symbol of harmony, represent the friendship between Malaysia and China and are linked by a man-made lake. A vessel, complete with a statue of the Chinese Admiral, Zheng He, was built to symbolize this great man’s voyages of discovery and trade. Admiral Zheng He, known locally as Cheng Ho, (1371-1433) was an admiral, diplomat and explorer during China’s Ming dynasty and was selected to lead the first of seven epic expeditions to South East Asia, which included stops in many parts of what is now east and west Malaysia.

COMMUNITY GARDENS OF PUTRAJAYA The Community Gardens Project is one of the community participation, engagement and empowerment initiatives under the Putrajaya Local Agenda 21 Programme. The first community garden of Putrajaya was started during early 2008 and officiated in October of the same year by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, The Honorable Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in response to the residents’ interest in vegetable gardening. In late 2008, Perbadanan Putrajaya regulated gardening by passing a law which allows gardening to be carried out yet controls encroachments onto public land. Residents are required to register with the City to enable monitoring and facilitate community gardening activities.
Putrajaya has 8 community gardens approved by the city authority, Perbadanan Putrajaya. The gardens, located on public lands owned by the Federal Land Commission, are witness to 113 gardeners who are registered and actively make their gardens a delight for all. Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook 2012
The Perbadanan Putrajaya, in a facilitator role, fulfillled the local government responsibility of discharging duties of educating the community by introducing Community Garden Clinics. These clinics were conducted by the Master Gardeners of the Perbadanan Putrajaya Horticultural Division, together with the Department of Agriculture. The city also provides “hands-on advisory services for problem-solving at site by visiting gardens at regular intervals to inspect gardening practices, check on pests and diseases and ensure successful food production. On an annual basis, the Perbadanan also hosts an audience of almost 200 participants at the community garden meetings. The way forward for the next 5 years for the Community Gardens of Putrajaya Project is to ensure sustainability of the project. The future direction for the community garden project at Putrajaya would be to increase community participation with greater engagement efforts to foster community empowerment.

MIDFIELDS PHASE 1 Sungai Besi
As a modern village of convenience, leisure and growth, Midfields acts as a vibrant oasis, a respite from the urban void in this hectic part of a rapidly developing city.
02
Midfields, at 23 acres, is located in one of Kuala Lumpur’s well known suburbs, Sungai Besi. With the surrounding area consisting of numerous dilapidated industries, abandoned yards, vacant lots, an area consisting of broken down urban spaces, social sprawl and chaotic traffic, the developer conceived of a visionary plan to rehabilitate and reorganise three sites in this once proud area. This new paradigm of residential enclaves is intended as a place of modern quality living and is planned to set in motion the phenomenon of urban regeneration. Midfields aims to act as a vibrant oasis, contained in a backdrop of layered forms, a composition of tall buildings, courtyards, plazas, waterscapes, shade structures, gardens and edges. The landscape theme, inspired by the music of Beethoven - in particular, his emotive “Moonlight Sonata” - incorporates reflective mirages and the playful sounds of water. The landscape’s casual, yet dynamic lyrical elements are woven seamlessly together throughout the green spaces to emphasise each themed space, as well as to provide a tranquil, tropical sanctuary that is beyond one’s imagination. 01 The moonlight pool and island retreat 02 The aerial view of the pool and recreational area

The modern landscape theme revitalises this ecological and educational setting, at the same time addressing the sustainability and environmental features of the development. Universiti Tuanku Abdul Rahman is an education development project located on 1300 acres of land in Kampar, Perak and is planned to accommodate a student population of 30,000, within 3,000.000 sq ft of built facilities. The site, being an old tin mine, has 25 ex-mining ponds and lakes, encompassing 40% of the entire site area, with the west of the site incorporating a backdrop of mountain ranges that offers a beautiful panoramic view and a serene lake setting to the entire development. The challenge for the landscape architects was to develop a modern landscape theme that would revitalise this ecological and educational setting, while at the same time being able to address the sustainability and environmental features of the development. In addition, creating a minimalist landscape would be viewed as a manifestation of the poetic notions of the magnificent lakes and enhance the panoramic views and features of the campus. The landscape concept of “The Memories of the Best Years describes the campus as a social node, a memorable gathering, an unforgettable event, a community space, a cultural identity, a distinguished occasion and a nurturing space as the university serves as a place where students meet to forge lifelong friendships and to experience a melting pot of memorable experiences. All the landscape elements showcased are very simple, elegant and minimalist in nature, without any fanfare or excessive primping. They indicate a strong and open relationship with the surrounding lake environment and encourage social interaction and a connection with the outdoors. This enables students, in their social capacity, to mingle, integrate and to coexist peacefully within their learning environment.

The new Federal Goverment Complex of Kedah, Bandar Muadzam Shah, is located in Anak Bukit, about 8 kilometres to the north of Alor Setar city centre. The design concept focusses on creating a formal landscape which highlights the legacy and identity of Alor Setar in conjunction with its cultural heritage and status as the state’s new administrative centre.
03
The landscape development consists of a formal, open space comprising an Oval Plaza linked to the official entrance, which is highlighted by an archway, reminiscent of the Gateway of Kuala Kedah. Fringing the plaza are pavilions, adjoined with trellises, which host state dignitaries during official ceremonies. The centrepiece of the plaza commemorates how Alor Setar derived its name, which is the display of a meandering water canal portraying ‘Alor’ and a structure symbolically representing a ‘Setar’ tree (Bouea macrophylla). The top of the structure is adorned with federal and state emblems, making an imposing colossal sculpture when viewed from afar. Extension of the landscape work to the riverfront successfully transformed the area into a promenade with a series of semi-circular decks. Interspersed between planting areas are two cantilevered viewing decks and a children’s playground, adding recreational facilities and socialising opportunities for the community.

Arguably one of the most sought after addresses for today’s urbanites who appreciate stylish suburban living within a dynamic cityscape, The Horizon, at Bangsar South, is a fully integrated, commercial enclave which stands apart from the rest with its amazing location and an adjacent, vast, 6-acre central park. The Central Park design focusses on drawing the surrounding urban energy, or “Chi”, into the unique “five pillars” central water feature. The five pillars water feature represents the 5 elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Branching out from the centre to the east axis is the “Eucalyptus Woods”, an informal planting, with a designated smoker’s area and public seating. Towards the west wing, “Palm Avenue” extends outwards, with a pathway planned to link to the future urban park development at “The Vertical”. On the north-south axis, the design allows for green open spaces with turf and trees acting as a buffer between the buildings. For high pedestrian connection areas, such as the main centre north-south axis to the LRT station, more paved areas are planned and planted with varieties of Frangipani Trees. The park is also carefully planned with sculptured glass and a steel structure staircase which connects to the car park below. A clever device employed here is the disguise of the air ventilation chambers, which pop up out of the ground just like many a free standing sculpture. When the sun sets, they are lit with warm light and become another urban feature.

The residence is a two and a half-story bungalow, located in Tropicana Golf and Country Resort. Designed as a combination of shapes, the bungalow is surrounded with verdant green plants on the ground as well as on the attic floor balcony. Lush tropical plants create a relaxing garden retreat in different corners of the house. From the entrance, a large sprawling paved area of patterned concrete stamping creates a driveway to the porch. Adjoining the area is a verandah pathway with a timber pergola covered with flowering Thunbergia spp. Alongside the pathway is a water garden filled with aquatic plants alongside sculptures of frogs which dot the greenery of the lawn. A walk to another corner of the garden, by the kitchen wing, brings the splashing sound of water from the fish pond, which is filled with colourful koi. This manmade water feature is adorned with semi-aquatic plants, whilst sculptures of ducks are added to replicate natural pond life. Pebble-wash finished pavement, bordered with in-laid slabs, frame the planting area whilst a garden swing sits snuggly between the plants. Throughout the garden, towering trees, Livistonia palms, ornamental bananas, giant Alocasias, bird’s nests and flowering Heliconias, among others, give the residence a rich, tropical ambience reminiscent of resort living.

KENANGA WOODS KAYANGAN HEIGHTS
With its extensive natural surroundings, Kenanga Woods offers opportunities for enjoying the outdoors.
Situated on the outskirts of Shah Alam lies Kayangan Heights, a hidden jewel, nestled quietly within 416.85 acres of undulating hills and pristine forest. Part of this development, Kenanga Woods, ensures its residents can have the best of both worlds in the form of a country residence or a holiday home, safe in the knowledge that they possess a luxurious, private haven, replete with lush greenery. With its extensive natural surroundings, Kenanga Woods offers opportunities for enjoying the outdoors with a myriad of recreational facilities. As if in tune with its natural surroundings, Kenanga Woods delivers on its promise of providing a peaceful and calm environment, alongside a high standard of living. Each home unit is carefully placed in order to maximise privacy and minimise undue disturbance to the existing forest setting. In order to enjoy the best views of the lake, each home unit faces the valley, with the local forest rising behind. The raised platform of each unit is covered with copious amounts of climbing plants, in order to connect the forest with the built environment in a seamless and eco-friendly manner. The park surrounding the lake is planned to not only provide recreational facilities for each home but as a further connection with the land to maximise privacy and minimise undue disturbance to the existing surroundings. The streetscape is carefully designed to ensure minimal maintenance, with the selection of small leaf trees which, at the same time, provide ample shade for pedestrians. For additional safety, hedges are planted to separate the pedestrian walkway from the arterial roadways throughout the development.

With an unsurpassed grandeur and as an authentic statement of modern living, East Lake Residence is peacefully embraced by tranquility and greenery, replete with ethereal scenes and a breathtakingly serene ambience. East Lake Residence consists of 5 blocks, which share pool facilities, all situated atop the parking floors. This is intended to create a central recreational area with lush greenery and water bodies which reflect the sun, foliage and the tropical colours during sunrise and sunset. It opens its arm as an urban tropical hideaway, welcoming residents home each day. This pool deck and recreational precinct is planned to maximise the view of the nearby Mines Lake and thereby establish a visual connection between the lake and the pool. The pool deck itself becomes the hub for all recreational facilities, shops and access to the apartments. From here, the remaining spaces within the development are cleverly divided either by water, plantings of trees or shrubs, floor treatments, changes of levels, and hard landscape structures. Each of the enclosures becomes an activity area for every age group and interest.

Hillvista is a freehold, 27 storey condominium residential development. Located in the area of Hillview, a private and affluent district, nestled in the northwest of Singapore, this is a popular residential precinct with a wide variety of condominium options. The landscape architectural strategy of Hillvista was to exploit the site to its fullest potential by placing the building at a North-South angle in order to eliminate the environmental impact of heat gain and glare within the apartment units. This arrangement created an opportunity for two swimming pool areas on both sides of the block, where a majority of the units can enjoy attractive pool and garden views, as well as the magnificent panorama of the surrounding green, hilly landscape. To create an urban retreat with a ‘Modern Tropical Balinese’ landscape theme, several design methods and strategies were adopted. One such idea was the use of water to enhance the living environment and offer a cool respite from the tropical climate.

Setia Eco Cascadia is a township constructed upon the ethos of being eco-friendly. The land topography of the site was respected, with minimal leveling undertaken, in order to retain the originality of the area. The hills and dales of the land were also protected with the addition of natural, cascading formations that preserve and enhance the space with trees planted to create a green seamless flow towards the residential precinct. Here, landscape elements such as a dry creek are designed as a feature to cater for water runoff during heavy downpours, with the water channelled to the nearest pond to prevent flash flooding. The residence is also connected by green lanes and rear gardens which serve as recreational spaces and a community social space. At Setia Eco Cascadia, the natural and built elements all join to become a complete and harmonious single entity.

The design placed great emphasis on a sustainable, energy-efficient landscaping approach for the outdoor spaces. Techniques included planting trees to shade buildings from the sun and wind, using local materials, on-site composting and chipping to reduce green waste hauling, the use of drought-resistant plantings in arid areas (xeriscaping) and purchasing stock from local growers to minimise energy use. Plants were also allowed to grow wild to establish a stable ecosystem and to promote a rich and varied biodiversity.

The plan of the Kolej Sains Kesihatan Bersekutu (KSKB) was focussed on a single goal; to provide a practical and useful space for the college community, with modern, contemporary facilities, hence the simple, clean and beautiful lines in every aspect of the design. Surrounded by a green backdrop, the planting gently blends into the tropical backdrop of the site and provides a shady atmosphere within the 40 acre campus. To ensure minimal maintenance work, the selection of trees was essential. While the hardscape elements were designed to suit the function of each space, such as a student square, a rooftop garden, a mosque area with durable materials, the spaces themselves are safe, with lighting in place which create areas where the community can meet and socialise.

Ujana Rimba Tropika, earmarked by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), was transformed into an urban park with forest trees and extended green spaces for urbanites. The Ujana Rimba Tropika urban public park, located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, originally designed by JKR and constructed 20 years ago, was a former monolithic concrete monument, namely the Tun Fuad Memorial Park. This project recently transformed it into an urban park, with forest trees and extended boundaries. The design of the park focussed on three main components, namely, Ceremonial Square, for commemorative activities; public recreation space, which provides an area for social interaction and recreation, and Educational Park, alerting the public to the importance of the forest woodland plantings and the indigenous tree species, such as fruit trees and ethno-botanical plants included in the design.

SIME DARBY PLANTATION HEADQUARTERS To evoke the ‘spirit of plantation’, the landscape design uses a grid system along its avenues.
Sime Darby Plantation Headquarters is a 13-storey, mixed-office building, built specifically for Sime Darby’s Plantation Division. Within the property, a large open, central courtyard, located in the heart of the office complex, complete with landscape elements and water features, has been created in order to provide a sense of natural tranquility which enlivens the surrounding office area. The planting design imitates the nature of a plantation environment by using a grid system along the avenues. Mixed use of natural and hard materials throughout the space provides an equilibrium between the corporate image and the ‘spirit of plantation’. The green belt continues at the rooftop level. Although the space is inaccessible to the public, with the use of turf on the roof surface, greater green credit is created, compared to the hard concrete surfaces. The landscape not only focusses on the exterior, but also focusses on the interior lobby with the use of a timber deck and indoor planting which brings the outside to the inside.

The soothing view and landscape of the Therapeutic Garden helps to promote relaxation in a patient’s mind and body. The purpose of the gardens is to help people to remain connected with nature, provide benefits for a wide variety of people who are ill or recovering from illness or for those who are recovering from surgery in healthcare facilities or undergoing physical rehabilitation. Research indicates that physical as well as visual access to nature helps people recover from illness quicker, reduces stress and lowers blood pressure. The elements of the garden include raised planters for guests, especially those using wheelchairs or walkers or have other physical limitations, to enjoy plantings of non toxic, safe species. Meanwhile, walkways and paths with smooth, glare-free and level surfaces have been added. Seating areas found throughout the garden come complete with sturdy furniture, specifically designed for the movement and mobility needs of the elderly.

CAMERON TOWERS
The Gasing Heights Cameron Towers, standing on 7 acres, consists of 270 residential units. The landscape design concept focusses on merging nature and the development. Gasing Hill has long been a beloved green lung among not only naturalists but also city folk in and around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. The latest attempted clearing of a section of this green space has raised a hot issue in terms of environmental concern, hill slope stability as well as ecological existence.
Gasing Heights Cameron Towers attempts to recover the once-damaged natural area, and return ecological quality to the original rainforest.
Built in the ‘90’s, Gasing Heights Cameron Towers attempts to recover the once-damaged natural area, and even return ecological quality to the original rainforest. All of this was possible only with the initial design concept and technical methods such as a ban on mowing of weeds, covering the back slope in order to allow succession to proceed, in this instance, to the wild fern (Nephrolepis bisserata), sapling planting on the same slope and extending forest-type tree planting from the hill slope towards the development. In this project, only materials that matched with the naturally occurring urban context were used.

The waterway runs between houses, with pathways that flow with the gentle gradients of the river shore. The water gracefully meets and disperses to and from the main pedestrian path of the township, which is visually connected to the larger pedestrian networks, contributing to the richness of the Eco Park’s landscape. The design concept outlined was a “Japanese-style garden”, with the physical attributes mirroring the expression of nature concept of Japanese garden principles. The application of some Japanese garden features, such as “Shikiishi (stone pavement)”, “Karikomi (trimmed shrub)”, “Tohroh (stone lantern)”, “Azumaya (gazebo)” and traditional environmental practice of stone-plants combination are materialised in this tropical version of a peaceful Japanese Garden.

DATARAN PUTRA
UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA
Surrounded by the academic core areas, the administration building and the green campus, Dataran Putra is at the heart of UPM’s public social events as it is the central congregating space for UPM when holding formal and informal occasions, especially the highly anticipated annual convocation ceremony.
This project transformed the existing square into Dataran Putra, creating an open yet functional area. The square is the congregation point for graduates and the outside world when celebrating student achievement. The concept of “Simplicity and Green” uses the planting of an exclusive ‘Satiri Lawn”, a new variety of Cynodon grass from a research product of UPM. The turf, carpeting the whole green area, acts as another distinctive feature of the space. It is doubled and separated by an elongated staircase which creates a grand sense of welcome. The existing flagpole is highlighted by the presence of a knee-height infinity water fountain which provides visitors with comfortable relaxation and reflection. In selecting soft landscape species, most plants are easymaintenance and ground covers, creating a clean and open space.

LINEAR PARK
ISKANDAR A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT BASED ON THE BCA GREEN MARK SCHEME This project site is perceived as a regional central park for the Iskandar Coastal (ICSB) development. It is designated as a linear park and as a portion of the 10% green area required of the ICSB development. A study made on sustainable development and the incorporation of a BCA green mark scheme determined the possibility of including sustainable initiatives within the design.
Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook 2012
The analysis study, covering topography, view, visuals and vegetation, concluded with a synthesis plan. The first sketch idea, transforming the idea into a physical design driven by BCA Green Mark Accreditation Scheme, was then formulated. A second plan, looking into maintenance, storm water management and rain water collection was then completed. The green provision of the plan aims to earmark 80% of the site as fully “green”. The park promotes biodiversity enhancement and habitat creation for the park’s flora and fauna. A Wetlands area with riparian plantings is to be introduced to act as a filter and assist in the retention of toxicants, sediments and nutrients while conserving existing oil palms for their thermal comfort, micro-climate and greenery aspects. Existing site characteristics may also be conserved and a high emphasis has been placed on park safety and recreational needs, as well as considering universal design for handicapped individuals. The design aims to bring back 60% of the green space, 15% of the water bodies, 15% for (green) parking, 10% of the built up area (building foot print) with the reforestation concept having an emphasis on tree colony planting strategies, which will be one of the park’s main community programmes. The sustainable design of this public recreational space focusses on optimising all of the park’s potential. The park design and planning has ensured that our valuable heritage resources are well kept and maintained and can act as a showcase for the present community members. It will also be a reference and knowledge hub for our future generations.

SEGAMAT LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN SEGAMAT DISTRICT
Landscape Architecture Malaysia Yearbook 2012
The analysis of the landscape characteristics and the distinct nature of Segamat is based on two main factors, which are “Place Making” & “Sense of Place”. This can be observed in the master plan achieving an integrated, sustainable landscape development plan. Segamat is one of 8 districts in Johor and it is strategically located near the border of Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. Segamat is a major urban centre in Johor with 93% of overall land being put aside for agricultural use with the main socio-economic activities being commercial, industrial, agricultural and tourism related industries. The objective of this study is to seek solutions to create a sustainable and conducive landscape environment while preserving the richness and uniqueness of the local history and heritage. The study aims to determine potential landscape zones within the Segamat District as a guideline to create sustainable environment development and to prepare design strategies and hierarchy in future landscape planning.

ELMINA EAST
GUTHRIE CORRIDOR LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN STUDY: TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE TOWNSHIP Elmina East aspires to set a new level in sustainable living and quality public realms in the Malaysian context. The project aims to deliver high sustainability outcomes allied with high quality living which promotes active, healthy and engaged communities. The proposed Elmina East township, located along the Guthrie Corridor, Selangor Darul Ehsan, north-west of Kuala Lumpur, aspires to become a benchmark quality township in Malaysia. This mixed use township consists of high-end and affordable residential precincts, a commercial town centre and light industrial area, all of which can cater for the needs of a broad cross-section of the local Malaysian community. This project aims to deliver high sustainability outcomes. Central to delivering on these ideals is the provision of an outstanding landscape and urban design setting that provides ‘breathing space’ for residents and visitors. This will be achieved through diverse interconnected spaces which encourage experiences and activities that will entice all members of the community to engage with their public realm, and each other. Ample green parklands, leafy streets and a beautiful river corridor will all contribute to the provision of public amenities that will set this township apart from the rest. The landscape design aims to achieve a high quality outcome while incorporating significant sustainable approaches. The plantation history of the site will be reflected in the theme “Spirit of Plantation Life’. Through various design principles such as using grids of trees, dappled light and distinct demarcation of open spaces.

DAMANSARA FORESTA BANDAR SRI DAMANSARA
With the exclusive green surroundings, this study aims to create outdoor facilities which respect the existing green areas and ecosystems, while setting a new benchmark in property development which is built as part of nature, not apart from nature.
Strategically located next to Bukit Lanjan Forest Reserve, Bandar Sri Damansara, Damansara Foresta is 42 acres of lush natural greenery with views of the spectacular city skyline. Foresta offers dwellers a chance to live with nature and to be part of it, rather than apart from it. Components such as existing flora and fauna are among the main study subjects. Topography and hydrological studies are among the important site conditions required to ensure the development will not jeopardize the high quality landforms and aqua systems of the site. FORESTA, is a conjunction of FOREST+A; the ‘A, is derived from the five main components which are: Actions, Arts, Activities, Ambiances and Appreciations. For the total of 42 acres of land available, 50% is dedicated for buildings and the remaining 50% for nature or nature related activities. The existing 3,000 trees on the site are to be preserved and included as part of FORESTA ‘s extra added value. Local aborigines will be encouraged to remain here and play a vital role in the maintenance of the property and the surrounding fruit orchard. In addition, 1,800 metres of jungle trails to further engage users with nature alongside 24 outdoor facilities are also planned.
