With the dawning of 2017, the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, or MLAAs, has stepped into its 9th edition. This annual ceremony is the most anticipated and prestigious landscape architecture industry award in the country, and the region. Since its inception in 2007, The MLAAs has grown from only recognising professional landscape design works, to now honouring the entire industry, with over 12 award types stretching across 8 main categories. These include professionals, developers & government linked companies, the government sector, contractors, researchers, students, and recently, the inclusion of 2 new categories for green products and media's commitment in creating awareness on quality outdoor living environment.

What is the use of a house if you do not have a decent planet to put it on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; - Henry David Thoreauâ&#x20AC;?

This year, the exceptional number of entry of submissions, 145 in total, will provide inspirational ideas for future landscape designs. Over the course of 2016, we witnessed new design trends that shaped the local landscape design movement. We believe these ideas can be adopted, adapted and integrated into new designs for the coming years across the nation. The MLAA awards have consistently raised the profile of the landscape architecture industry, and received full endorsements by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) in 2015. Since then, we have invited international judges to be part of the jury team and set the competition bar even higher. The awards promote best practices and create awareness of our profession, via our public relation activities and various national media platforms.

The Malaysian Landscape Architecture Award has now come into its 9th year and we would like to congratulate the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) on this journey to showcase and recognise the organisations who stand out as leaders in their own right in supporting the cause of building good quality outdoor environments in Malaysia. At Setia, we are reminded as we take part in this journey to embed sustainability in all our developments, that we are doing so for the sake of the wellbeing of families and the future generations of this nation. It is by no means an easy feat but we are committed to contributing to this cause, and along the way, develop landmarks, garner numerous achievements and appreciation from our home owners. Nine years may not be a long span of time, and a coffee table book cannot say it all, but ILAM has persevered in its efforts to encapsulate and recognise the various efforts put in by many throughout the years. Kudos to the winners of The Malaysian Landscape Architecture Awards this year. Together with ILAM, we urge the various industry players and professions in built environment to continue in its cause to create better solutions for sustainable living.

THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE INDUSTRY AWARDS IN MALAYSIA MLAA TROPHY THE TREE The trophy is inspired by topographical contour lines, positioned vertically, to resemble the shape of a tree. It symbolises both 'land'’and 'scape'. Standing at a height of 25cm, the trophy comes in various colours to represent the different award types.

THE POWER OF SMALL

ACT BEYOND A WIDER PERSPECTIVE

A young visionary who believes the power of small can influence others, through the ideal that each small step can lead to big changes.

Landscape architecture is a profession that involves designing with plants, serves as a way to understand site context, enhances spaces for community use, and adds value for the project owner.

I believe that a landscape architect should know their own capabilities; that small steps can make a difference to our environment. From the knowledge and skills we acquired in universities, we are able to explore and propagate seeds, understand ecosystems of growth, and how best to contribute to the wellbeing of the communities. While serving our role as a professional, we should not forget to have fun, enjoy everything we do, inspire the community, think outside the box, and become influential for others. We also should get to know local inhabitants and citizens of an area, and understand the local context in everything we design. We have a responsibility to immerse ourselves with like-minded people who share similar dreams and aspirations. We should also challenge ourselves and be proud of what we have achieved, appreciate the confidence and trust that others have in you, and give back to those in need. You should always rise to the challenge and then you will be surprised how far you can go. Always use and test your work and share ideas and plans with friends and mentors. Lastly, remember to connect with your roots and reflect.

Landscape architectural practice is not only confined to simple planting design, but a wider range of design fields, integrating various areas of knowledge, from natural to built environments. It is a channel to manifest a comprehensive relationship between all outdoor elements, as far as we can see. As a landscape architect, we should preserve and conserve our natural resources and minimise interference to the natural surroundings, via innovative design solutions that meet clients expectations. In order to create the best design, we should be equipped with knowledge and understanding of the natural environment, wildlife and social behaviour, topped with innovative and creative thinking, to bring the optimum result to the project. As every project has its own unique qualities and constraints, landscape architects should think and act beyond a wider perspective to overcome these challenges. A successful project requires a close collaboration and communication with other professionals and experts such as consultants, contractors, specialists, as well as the client. With this process, a better outcome and higher standard can be delivered.

Legenda Southbay, Penang

Driven by its surrounding nature that forms an enclosed space, the landscape strategy for Legenda at Southbay is towards a hidden garden concept, where design learns from the natural wonders and how these experiences change us. The whole area is illuminated at night by the signature antenna pole lights, inspired by sensory antennas of an arthropod. Twin Palms Kemensah Ampang Jaya, Selangor

Twin Palms Kemensah, a modern refuge at the foothills with landscape design derived from the serene and magnificent hilly stretch of Bukit Tabur. This design core idea is to bring the surrounding landscape into its domain, creating continuity from far beyond the horizon into its streetscape. One of the key feature elements is the water cascade, located just beyond the grove of trees. When water is not running, it reveals a rocky stone edge surface, like an escarpment of the mountain peak, introducing not just an ornamental but also a tactile phenomenology into the landscape. This derivation from the neighbouring Bukit Tabur is pleasantly repeated to various features in the development such as the Cubist Forest, the Elliptical Field, and the Maze. Steel cube shelters are created from salvaged steel beams and expanded metal mesh. Located at the corner of the playground, giving it full view of the area, climbers cling onto the metal frame, giving shelter and green wall treatment.

LiuLi Gardens Setia Eco Glades, Cyberjaya, Selangor

As the name suggests, LiuLi Gardens evokes the image of an enchanted crystal glass garden, with 'Liuli' being the ancient term to describe the exquisite crystal glass art from the Chinese imperial dynasties. The garden concept draws close reference to the rainforest. Plants are selected to emulate the layers found within the forest - emergent layer, canopy layer, understory, and the floor levels. At the centre of the east Liuli gardens, there lies a Liuli moon well, with crystal glass sculptures standing magnificently on the fountain. These Liuli sculptures manifest in globular clusters of blue trumpets, floating on a cloud shaped fountain. To the West, the Liuli sculptures at the fountain appear in the form of blue flamingos. They nestle safely out of people's reach, in the centre of the fountain, surrounded with thick shrubbery. In both gardens, Liuli lantern lamp posts adorn the nightscape with their colourful and majestic design.

Canary Residence Cheras Hartamas, Selangor

Canary Residence is an open-concept residential sanctuary set in the established urban fabric of Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Just past the repetitive trellis-like steel sections standing more than 20 feet high over the guard house, is the clubhouse. Stone clad walls dashed with steel silhouettes of flying canaries stand as ushers, welcoming visitors to the clubhouse. Past the joyful canaries is a place for residents to relax and unwind with the sculptural pool deck seating overlooking the bubble jet pool and white sun-beds floating in the shallow end of the swimming pool. Minimum earthworks during the construction stage allowed the natural terrain to be preserved and caused minimal impact to the surrounding environment. The landscape lighting aims to promote sustainable management with use of LED lights and localised ambient lighting concepts.

The Periwinkle landscape design emphasises creating a doorway into the Old Malay lifestyle; evoking nostalgia and strong connectivity to a traditional 'kampung' way of life. The welcoming entrance zone is adorned with 'Pinang'-like Areca Catechu, 'Manggis'-like Garcinia Subelliptica, and 'Padi'-like Pennistum Setacum, which act as a walk down memory lane with plants reminding residents of the cool country side. The central park is where parents can share their personal stories with the younger generation, all while playing at the Perahu playground and sliding down the Bullock Cart slide. Several pocket parks were also incorporated to further enhance nostalgic feelings, such as Rubber Tree Avenue, Padi Field Walk, and Coconut Avenue.

Charm of Nusantara

Setia Eco Glades, Cyberjaya, Selangor

Charm of Nusantara is one of the eight thematic islands in Setia Eco Glades with a Balinese themed landscape design surrounded by lush green parks and waterways, complete with exotic materials like lava and palimanan stones, imported from Bali. The green selection is not only based on the aesthetic value but also the ecological contribution; plants produce flowers and fruits that attract both indigenous and migratory bird species, small mammals, and invertebrates such as frogs and insects. The waterways surrounding the area contain resident fish saved from the original site with addition of other native species to create a balanced food chain ecosystem. Three main gardens and five pocket gardens were created in between the houses and transition areas to the waterways. Lava Garden is one of the main attractions within the island, designed with a welcoming Balinese arch gateway and finishing materials such as the volcanic lava stones imported from Bali. Intricate details adorn the raised 'Pangkin' roof with synthetic alang-alang and sprouting water features inside the garden create a soothing and calming tropical island environment. The combination of attention to even the most minute of details, along with environmental awareness aspects, might lead one to believe that Bali itself has found its way to Setia Eco Glades, Cyberjaya.

Twin Palms Sungai Long is an emerald realm of peace and tranquillity which aims to provide a 'parkland community living' environment. The landscape concept aims to create a woodland valley with its diversity of trees mimicking the natural woodland and topiary animals scattered in various areas which make this 'woodland' come to life. The design also emphasises a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), where storm water is guided and controlled via creeks and gullies into retention ponds. This creates a natural system within the residence to control storm water, reduce erosion, and prevent flooding. NorthVale Lake is one such retention pond created for this function in addition to helping regulate cool air and provide a scenic environment for outdoor recreation. Trees and shrubs surround the lake, while rocks and aquatic plants stabilise the bank, creating a natural lake setting. This lake also shrouds the highway from sight, by providing an infinity vista beyond the horizon and into the sky. 44

16 Quartz @ Melawati landscape concept pays homage to the unique site character of its location near the foothills of the famed Quartz Ridge, better known locally as Bukit Tabur. An 11 metre water wall forms an impressive backdrop to the arrival motor court with a family of stainless steel stylized deer sculptures at the base. Each villa is designed to have direct 'car-free' pedestrian access to the facilities and gardens, and landscape areas and arranged to fit the natural multi-elevation terrain. Maximising the view towards the Melawati hillside, the infinity pool is located at the highest point, enjoying a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Planter boxes are clad with natural weathered looking planks, and incorporate clusters of Melaleuca cajuputi, a plant with interesting bark that can be appreciated close up as one walks up and down the garden steps. The meandering footpaths between the courtyard villas and linear gardens are interlinked, resulting in a 600 metre network of jogging tracks. The villas open up to tranquil gardens surrounding the meandering stream which flows from the highest point of the landscape podium towards the clubhouse area where the garden unfolds with 4 thematic characters: Spring Garden, Pebble Creek, Willow Creek and Summer Garden.

The Aurora landscape concept combines minimalist architectural design with a simplistic yet modern landscape approach, projecting the beauty of auroras in the sky, into a landscape architectural design. Adorning the roundabout, a sculptural light fixture, designed with modern geometric shapes and inspired by the aurora phenomena, stands proud, announcing the arrival of residents to their home. The backyard gardens are connected to each residential unit and link to two separate linear parks. The first playground adopts the concept of moon walk, reflecting the undulating environment as we step on the moon's surface. The second playground interprets a concept of a futuristic metropolis, with components such as railings, tunnels, space ships, and arches that reflect a futuristic cityscape. The playgrounds are both functional and educational as children can play with several interactive components.

Avantas Residences landscape concept embraces compact urban spaces with the application of multi-tier greeneries. Designed with green building features and adhering to Green Building Index (GBI) accreditation guidelines, the design attunes to the needs and wants of the urban community. The key showcase is the Facilities Deck, demarcated into three distinct yet complementary zones. The south section is the pool and BBQ area, with commanding views of Bukit Gasing & the KLCC Skyline. One Canberra is a true waterfront living experience, featuring many water elements, such as the Beach Splash Pool, Wading Pool, Jacuzzis, Hydro Spa, water lounges and much more. Every element is integrated with many other interactive water concepts such as Zero-entry pool and a luxurious infinity pool. The concept capitalises on the existing river canal and the local topography to expand the view beyond the horizon. Various characteristics of the design include features such as the Cascade, the Waterfall, the Streams, the Lagoon and the Cove. With its Modern Minimalist Concept Living, the Latitud3 concept comprises 3 main components; the Urban Park on the Ground Floor, the Haven & Lifestyle Aspiration on the 7th Floor, and the Blue Cosmic Perspective on the 25th Floor. Latitud3 is a high-end, 25-storey, serviced residence, located in Section 16, Petaling Jaya. One can expect lush green forest plantings that fill the sidewalks leading to the entrance, which also serves as a natural green buffer from the urban street. Giant mature trees (such as the 15 year old Terminalia catappa) preserved at the site, welcome residents alongside a covered plaza, decorated with a reflective waterscape. The Setia Tri-Angle landscape concept encapsulates the environment of 'Urban Organism', comprising three key elements; Earth, Tri-Community, and Nature Works. The integrated development marries three key communities in one stylish structure, encompassing commercial suites, corporate suites and residential condominiums. The centre podium, which symbolizes 'Earth', is adorned with three futuristic oval-shaped structures made of metal fabric. These curved oval skylines provide a cool respite for the community to enjoy the water plaza, the sunken garden, and the Jacuzzi below. The Quayside's world class, luxurious resort landscape reflects the seafront nature, while respecting Seri Tanjung Pinang's philosophy of 'a contemporary neo-colonial landscape'. The design strives to create a pool environment as a private 4.5-acre waterpark, intended as the first in the region. The concept provides a consistent green carpet that flows through residential drop-offs, around building plinths, and through the central waterpark and clubhouse, to create a single, integrated environment. Each drop-off is designed as a garden courtyard, incorporating lush planting and ornamental water features with warm stained concrete colour tones to complement the beachfront vernacular. The clubhouse is flanked by jacuzzi pools and formal raised planters with Frangipani trees. The paving's light, creamy colour was chosen for its high albedo; reducing solar gain and allowing the paving to remain cool under foot across the pool decks. There are multiple themed pools, from a formal shape signature pool, an organic shaped leisure pool, a spa pool, water slides, and a sandy beach pool for those who prefer a 'close to nature' seaside experience. A series of bridges and stepping-stones allows pools and spaces to be explored from different vantage points. The bricks are designed to slowly separate over time to allow grass to creep between the joints to provide a comfortable yet natural emerging surface on which to romantically meander beneath groves of shade trees.

The UNIV 360 Place landscape design takes on the challenge to turn a conventional sky-rise residential block into a biophilic architectural design. The final 'Indigenous Biophilic' design concept aims to create a locally originated, multi-function, green architecture feature, reconnecting sky-rise urbanites with nature. Green vertical and canopy gardens adorn the simple corten-steel and off-form concrete at the ground floor entrance. The children's playground features equipment made from natural logs, a clever twist to inspire children to play with natural materials amidst the cool terrain. The lush green podium grove has a forest tree palette for the purpose of urban reforestation. But above all, the most outstanding feature at UNIV 360 Place has to be the mid-level landscape, which creates an extra variety of green communal places in which residents can interact more often. Walking on the long corridors at mid-level, with columns resembling pre-war shop houses 'Kaki lima', brings one back to nostalgic old town memories. Overhead, the elevated walkway and cabana interweaves with the curved beams and columns. The rooftop garden has a huge planter and a reflective pond that helps storm water runoff and enriches high-rise vertical biodiversity. All in all, the design remains true to its biophilic concept. The substantial green interwoven vertically with the building acts as a wildlife 'magnet', pulling the local habitat upward to its sky-rise greenery and creating a type of micro-habitat and wildlife sanctuary. A rainwater harvesting system is also integrated into the design to store rainfall for purpose of irrigation and general cleaning. One Tanjong landscape design capitalises on the beautiful natural scenery of Tanjung Bungah and aims to maintain as much of the original trees and plants as possible. The unobstructed sea view, lush landscape environment, framed by rolling hills and glistening seas, is the first in Penang to have an eye-catching vertical landscaping which creates a 'wow' effect from near and far. By the entrance, a large ficus is preserved as a part of the welcoming attributes. The private lobby in each unit boasts a sunken area that can be converted into a garden, fishpond or a smart swimming pool, according to homeowner's fancies. One Tanjong landscape design takes the term infinity pool to a whole new level. Facing the seafront, the infinity pool creates an illusion as though the pool and the sea are one continuous water element. A Koi Pond is located in the middle of the tropical garden, surrounded by the Hybrid Orange and Pink Plumeria that breaks the monotony of the grey artificial rock pond.

The Isola Serviced Residence 'Green Neighbourhood Recreation' concept is centralised around a space that becomes the 'green heart' of the community, featuring clean-line simplicity to create a contemporary ambience. The centrepiece for the plaza is a compass pattern, giving a sense of orientation to the residents and inviting them to utilise the outdoor gym equipment. On every third floor, triple volume spaces are carved out from the towers to create sky gardens for the nearby inhabitants. The canopy courtyard design combines linear patterns on the floor and feature walls with a polka dot shade glass canopy, creating a progressive visual during the daytime. A gourmet garden with a tensile canopy inspires residents to attempt their own al fresco dining experience. A Koi Pond, with bio-filtration system, sits at the edge of the development, giving a therapeutic experience to residents looking for total relaxation.

The Molek Pine 3 landscape master plan was initiated with a nature-inspired concept of a RIPPLE. A distinct concentric configuration extends outwards from a central source in the form of a symbolic 'spiritual mound'. The design creates a modern tropical resort living setting through integration of Japanese elements to accommodate the majority Japanese purchasers. Details of niche landscape spaces such as the 'zen gardens' uses loose chipping stones that are raked to represent ripples of water in a peaceful pond. In addition to the beautiful swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi, the design incorporates a Japanese Onsen, to offer the residents the perfect respite to clear the mind and rest the tired body.

Located 180 metres above sea level with extensive natural surroundings, Damansara Foresta offers a picturesque and tranquil living environment, promoting 'Living in Harmony with Nature'. This high-rise condominium is located next to the Bukit Lanjan Reserve Forest; 42 acres of lush natural greeneries and a 150 million year old rainforest with a backdrop of mountainous terrains. The landscape design emphasises on urban sustainability, enabling resident access between the development and the existing forest. Together with the Department of Forestry, approximately 3,000 existing trees are preserved within the development. Also preserved on site is a small, natural water spring that has been redirected to enliven the water features and channelled to the water harvesting system. Series of elevated decks and sky walks enrich the flat ground cover and encourage moderate-hiking activities, promoting not just a fun, but also healthy nature-themed community interaction.

Verdana captivates the visitors with an amazing display of twelve Date Palms (Phoenix sylvestris) in giant concrete planters, floating above a black reflecting pool. This provides the grand statement for the Verdana arrival court, a perfect gateway to the luxurious landscape lying inside. The covered walkway passing through gardens of Ervatamia, Spikemoss (Selaginella willdenowii), and pools of serene water, shelters residents from the guardhouse to the lift lobby. The concept utilises a series of curvilinear forms which are repeated in meandering lagoons fronting apartment units, swimming pools and planting beds to create an unfolding landscape garden. The 50-metre infinity pool is tiled with a glass mosaic of blue and green, beautifully shimmering under the sun light. Treading through the gardens, playgrounds, and reflexology paths on the podium level, residents also enjoy a half kilometre jogging path which allows for either an energetic run or a relaxing evening stroll.

The compound between the two towers of Epic Residence might not be the most spacious of the lot, but the clever 'embracing the space' landscape concept adopted using carefully crafted detailing and seamless edgings divides the limited space visually yet widens the view spatially. The instant eye catcher has got to be the sunken deck that intimately floats within the gradually changing from light to deep blue swimming pool. Plant selection for the green wall mainly consists of epiphytes and climbers that derive its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it, greatly reducing maintenance and ensuring evergreen planting. The bio-filtration system in the fish pond achieves clean, clear water quality with minimal maintenance by means of its efficiency in controlling the dissolved nutrients.

The Greens landscape concept is an extended piece of the neighbouring natural terrain of Bukit Kiara Reserve Forest, featuring its rainforest glade at the central axis. The lush green trellis at the entrance greets residents while natural shade and green planters wrap the building as a cool ambient. At the central axis above, a generous infinity pool with day bed sofa lounges encourages passive fun and exercise to cool off. A therapeutic zone is designed with metal and stone decking for residents to practice yoga and other meditative activities in a dedicated quiet environment. The experience continues into the spice garden nook, not just providing herbs and edible spices for residents, but also provides a bespoke green walled tent to gather or cool down in the hot summer afternoons.

Set within the new neighbourhood of Suntex Cheras, the You Vista@You City design combines green and blue features of colourful shrubs and cooling water elements with the sophistication of artistic features. Artistic features decorate the facade, from the colourful steel art sculpture at the car park entrance, to the tree branch inspired shade of the infinity pool pavilions. The green areas at the podium level are separated between East and West Gardens. The East Garden is the active recreational zone, with facilities such as a Glass Gym, Manicured Lawn, Chess Tables, Zen Garden and Health Path. This zone is predominantly planted with trees and lower shrubs with a large, elevated activity lawn. The West Garden is designed predominantly for water based activities with facilities such as a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, beach and hammock garden, all surrounded by resort styled plantings, which creates various spaces within the garden.

The concept of 'Urban Recharge' is explored to enhance atmospheric quality by providing a serene setting and ambience for residents to recharge and rejuvenate from the bustle of daily city life.

Ameera Residence landscape design takes inspiration from the verdant greenery of Jeloh Forest Reserve within its proximity, creating a link between architecture and nature. The tree arch sculpture designed to frame the main feature wall is integrated with a reflecting pool, seamlessly uniting both. As one of the key landscape features, the perimeter boundary wall and water feature uses recycled granite stones originally from the construction site itself, highlighting the values of sustainable living through the warmth of nature. URBAN INSPIRATION

G Residence Desa Pandan, Kuala Lumpur

G. Residence is a predominantly residential mixed-use development in Desa Pandan. It is conveniently situated close to the city centre and offers two blocks of apartments with two floors of retail units. Hence, the design offers two distinct landscape concepts for each Retail Plaza at the ground floor, and the Environmental Deck for the residents, above. At the retail level, the design is inspired by the linear arrangement of the building and the generous set-back to the frontage building line. The general layout pattern is influenced by the necessity of the car parking grids, whilst a hardscape pattern of footpaths and banding extends through the space to form a plaza, created as a reflection of the long and linear frontage of Jalan Desa Pandan. The Residents' Environmental Deck, located at the podium level, is exclusively for recreational use by the residents. A 30-meter Infinity edge swimming pool, with spectacular views to the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC, is one of the signature features of the project. The pool is enlivened by an outdoor Jacuzzi and a submerged lounger deck, set beneath a linear Frangipani grove. Clusters of indigenous woodland planting provide a green backdrop and act as a physical buffer screen.

Tranquility Park East Ledang, Johor

The township of East Ledang houses 31 gardens spread over seven parks, beautifully symbolising 31 days in a month, and seven days in a week. One such space is the Tranquillity Park, consisting of four of the esoteric gardens within its magical landscape. A long rustic path, shaded by trees on both sides, defines the Village Garden. Adding to the country feel is a roofed wooden bridge overlooking a dry stream. The Stairway Garden begins at the bottom of a hill with natural and organic landscaping. Ascending the long flight of steps leads one to a formal garden at the top, in which is a stone pavilion. The descent on the other side takes one to the Swan Garden, a pond with swans, ducks and fish, while a boardwalk traverses the pond, and, hidden amidst the bank of tall grass, is a wooden platform to relax or have a picnic. In the nearby vicinity is the Nature Garden with trees, a shaded sitting area, and a footpath. Builds an unforgettable experience with friendly birds brings happiness and harmonious environment. This is how a living spaces should be.

Rafflesia Hill Park Damansara Perdana, Selangor

Amongst the existing terrain and preserved forest, here resides a pristine, man-made lake, in the shape of a Rafflesia flower, which is complemented by luxuriant greenery and exemplifies a definitive connectivity between man and nature. The landscape character of Rafflesia Hill Park is based on an eco-botanical theme, inspired by the Rafflesia flower, a species indigenous to South East Asia. Characterised by its combined beauty and function, the design inspires patrons to either enjoy a vigorous and healthy workout amidst the nature within the park, or spend a breezy morning doing exercise or yoga by the lake in the parcourse or specially-designed timber decks. Another option is to go for a rejuvenating jog or walk on the walkway cum jogging trail. The lake was converted from a retention pond into a recreational park in order to cater to the needs of the residential community. Upon completion, the once simple retention pond bloomed into a beautiful five petal Rafflesia flower (i.e. Wellness Enclave, Garden of Senses, Nature's Walk, Mini Rainforest Sanctuary, Green Peak) with a central flower chamber (i.e. the Island).

Marine Cove East Coast Park, Singapore

The landscape upgrade of Marine Cove @ East Coast Park is based on a Family and Lifestyle concept with a focus on providing recreation for families, while at the same time preserving the natural identity of the locale; the coastline of Singapore. To embrace the natural setting, standalone public toilets with an open-toilet concept and outdoor refreshment areas are used to complement the settings of East Coast Park. As part of the sensitive upgrading, preserving existing trees was also key to the success of this development, as they provide bountiful shade for visitors. With the benefit of the coastal setting, the planting focuses on using Coastal varieties to integrate with the East Coast Park design and atmosphere. At Marine Cove, to complement its beach setting, the park concept creates open spaces and vistas, providing visitors with a clear view of the sea. Park users can soak in the beach view while enjoying the facilities or dining nearby. For children, the playground is specifically designed to follow the coastal theme with its various zones; the Sand Bar, the Reef Zone, Adventure Lagoon, Point Plaza, and Crustacean's Cove.

BishanAng Mo Kio Park Singapore

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park provides a new model for tropical urban hydrology through the instrument of landscape infrastructure, addressing Singapore's dual need for water supply independence and flash flood management while creating access to a thriving riverine ecology within the dense city. Singapore's national water agency, PUB, initiated the Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Programme to transform the country's water bodies beyond their functions of drainage and water supply, into vibrant, new spaces for community bonding and recreation. Designed based on a floodplain concept, people can get closer to water and enjoy recreational activities along the generous river banks when water level is low. During times of heavy rain, park land adjacent to the river doubles as a conveyance channel, carrying the water flow downstream. Three new bridges, a terraced riverside gallery, river platforms, stepping stones across the river, and a water playground fed with naturally cleansed river water, are all features that enable one to connect with the river, transforming peoples' sense of responsibility for their environment. Simple, yet highly engineered, this blurred line between park and river has transformed the community's pragmatic perception of urban water systems to a relationship that is proud and close to nature.

The ERA Sales Gallery Segambut, Kuala Lumpur

The identity of an Urban Forest is showcased at the ERA Sales Gallery with a landscape design focusing on a simple interpretation of a forest typology showcasing nature's ubiquitous curves, edges, and layers of forest hierarchy. To completely immerse residents in this hide and seek escape, the landscape reflects natural forms, each keeping the landscape in perpetual flux, from one to the other; The Wetlands (Dragonfly Rise, Bull frog Hums, Snail Walk, Fish Koi), The Water Cascades (Butterfly Escape), Largest Hibiscus Gardens (National Identity), Suspended Tree Houses, and Stargazing Decks (Owl Corner). The Wetlands, being the landscape's main element, connects all the unique features together, which includes a lush lawn, 100 species of water plants, a meandering pathway system, and an interactive water play area, all of which helps to build suspense, until arriving at the main entrance.

Lepironia Garden

Setia Eco Glades, Cyberjaya, Selangor

Lepironia Garden was inspired and named after the Lepironia articulata, a dominant and resilient resident wetland plant, identified on the original site. The design concept aspires to return a portion of that intrinsic value to the landscape to create a memory of its origin. Lepironia reeds were assimilated into the new landscape environment through functional design consideration, which aimed to restore the identity of the site and reinvent the ecological aesthetics of wetlands for improved urban appeal. The layers of soft and hard systems in the landscape were imbued with character through elegant design and replanting of native site vegetation to generate ecologically functional and emotionally uplifting spaces throughout the garden. Fountains animate the landscape and enliven the waterways with aquatic sound and motion, improving water quality through aeration, while at the same time cooling the surrounding landscape. Water plants remove excess nutrients from the water to improve its quality and create habitats for bio-indicators like damselflies and dragonflies. The Orchard garden features newly transplanted trees, to encourage the return of resident birds and insects, as well as local fruit trees, which attract new species to the ecosystem. The diverse vegetation palette provides biodiversity, visual texture, and depth to the resilient ecosystem, which is now able to resist and recover from environmental disturbances. 110

Urban Park One City Subang Jaya, Selangor

Urban Park @ One City is an open, public, green space that lives up to its name, being situated in the middle of a mixed development, surrounded by a cluster of commercial blocks, office buildings, SOHO apartments, and hotels. The overall landscape design for the park focuses on horizontal and vertical elements that create a sense of balance in a modern and sleek area. Pathways are bordered by little island pockets with a grass mound design, giving visitors a feel of undulating landforms, instead of a typical flat park surface. Wedelia trilobata covers the mounds, giving it a natural, green finish, as well as acting as a natural treatment to protect the soil. The main feature of the park is the Water Plaza, with a synchronised water fountain at the centre seamlessly shooting water from the floor, and all surrounded by an amazing circular grass pattern that provides a spectacular bird's eye view for the surrounding high rise neighbours. Sibu Town Square Sibu, Sarawak

The main purpose for this landscape design is to upgrade and beautify Sibu Town Square, Phase 2, to become a Green City, and consists of 9 acres of green area within the development - namely, STQ Public Park. The green park includes existing green lawns, main and secondary pedestrian pathways, jogging paths, children's playground, shelters, jetty, and a Skate Park. The key design considerations for the park are the preservation of the existing components on site: Memorial Park, environmental design for the Lembangan River, pedestrian connectivity between the surrounding mixed developments, subsoil drainage work on existing turf area, and new green areas. The final design is reminiscent of the previous waterfront scenario; with some of the elements being recycled into the new waterfront design such as the curvilinear 'river waves' pathway patterns, alongside stainless steel railings used as bollards at the jetty.

The Clubhouse, or known as the 'Opera House', is designed to be a spectacular floating feature that exudes an exclusive resort ambience as it sprawls horizontally along a waterway, into breath taking floating pavilions. Each pavilion is a unique recreational space, connected by a serpentine walkway. Residents and visitors alike are tempted to luxuriate in the infinity pool, soothe their senses in landscaped ponds and sensory gardens, or seek inspiration on a floating gazebo, while listening to the sounds of cascading water. For a change of pace, the wet playground is available for children who wish to splash around, and a gym is available for those who yearn for a quick workout in between hours.

ABC Waters:

Sungei Api Api & Sungei Tampines Singapore

The ABC (Active, Clean, Beautiful) Waters initiative along the Sungei Api Api and Sungei Tampines aims to blend the edges of these two rivers with the surrounding neighbourhoods and parks, creating more recreational spaces for the community and bring residents closer to the waterfront. Along Sungei Api Api, a five hectare patch of matured mangroves, planted in the 1980's, was preserved during construction. Both banks of the river are planted with additional greenery, with water sensitive urban design (WSUD) features, such as cleansing biotopes and rain gardens, in use. Along Sungei Tampines, the integration of Singapore HDB's (Housing Development Board) Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, the enhancement of the existing Park Connector Network (PCN) and the introduction of WSUD features such as rain gardens along the river, are integrated into the design. Cleansing features like rain gardens, linear wetlands and cleansing biotopes help to enlighten not only the public but also educational programmes, integrated within nearby schools. 118

Waterway Ridges Singapore

The Waterway Ridges landscape design is inspired by Chinese 'shan-shui' paintings, which translate abstract tracings of mountain 'ridge' silhouettes across the building forms. Intimating landscaped valleys with cascading streams of gently flowing water, the bioswales fill up dramatically after each heavy downpour. As part of Singapore Public Utilities Board's (PUB's) Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) initiative, the landscape concept includes an environmentally sustainable network of bioswales, bio-retention ponds, and other water-sensitive urban design techniques that control storm water run-off. Collected rainwater channels through layers of cleansing filters before being discharged as clean, treated water. The design enhances biodiversity, beautifies urban spaces, and creates vibrant and sustainable community spaces. Accessible green roofs reduce urban 'heat-island' effects. Other eco-features such as recycling and compost bins, water-saving sanitary fixtures, motion-sensing lights, and bicycle parking facilities, increase the awareness of residents about the benefits and importance of an environmentally sensitive lifestyle.

Wetlands Setia Alam Setia Alam North, Selangor

As part of the township's original ecology, Wetlands Setia Alam winds its way along the North Western boundaries of Precinct 11, fulfilling the needs of its innate flora and fauna; embedded with elements to realise the future needs of both man and nature. Wetlands Setia Alam is an ornamental landform that is made up of multiple oval-shaped water pockets, each dressed with numerous species of wetland flora. It is a bird sanctuary (being situated along migratory paths) and features native fruit trees, flowering plants, nature trails and walkways that link the different pockets of water together. This biodiversity interflow sets the blueprint for a thriving sustainable refuge to emerge - one that draws visitors for its calming aesthetics and to be an 'outdoor classroom' of wetlands and their ecological importance. A multi-storey pavilion serves as an observation deck, along with various boardwalks and gazebos on the lake fringe for people to take in the entire Wetlands. Selected tree species with medicinal, culinary, and cultural values were planted to create an emotional attachment to the Wetlands so that residents themselves are drawn to take an active role in caring for these nurseries, ensuring its long term sustainability.

Linear Park East Ledang, Johor

The Linear Park is one of seven parks located in the township of East Ledang. The landscape design focuses on a 'Green Continuum' concept, integrating buildings and open spaces through a continuous network of linear parks. The linear park is comprised of networked pedestrian footpaths, valleys and embankments, with active and passive recreational areas. By encouraging pedestrian movement throughout the development, the design creates a sense of community and kinship, with increased interaction between residents in and among the gardens of Linear Park. Colourful plantings, winding pathways, lush greenery, and a cleverly repurposed culvert transform the Secret Garden into a private oasis. The Trail Garden encourages residents to exercise and explore the area by providing a beautiful natural trail, colourful shrubs, and lively sculptures. The water element, made up of manmade rocks, replicate a geyser at Serenity Garden, giving a certain energy to complement the mood of relaxation after a hectic day at the office before making ones way to the neat and tidy landscape at the Lawn Garden.

Grassland Park & Oriental Garden Setia Ecohill, Selangor

Grassland Park and Oriental Garden, two major parks formed with lush landscape gardens, take advantage of the upper stream pond and lower stream lake which exist naturally in the picturesque and hilly landscape of Setia Ecohill. The inspiration for the Grassland Park design comes from a type of small grass foliage. Vegetation is planted inside the park, providing large and open spaces, with oversized greenery, made available for its users. User-friendly amenities and large timber decks and cool benches enable users to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The design concept for the Oriental Garden aspires to bring Asian-centric landscape elements and nature to the community's backdoor, which is meant to be tranquil and explorative. The alley, planted with selected trees, not only screens the surrounding houses, but also attracts various migrating birds to make the park their home. Putrajaya Ethnobotany Park Putrajaya

'Ethnobotany' is the study of the interaction between humans and plants which involves many aspects, including medicine, food sources, economics, and culture. The development concept for Putrajaya Ethnobotany Park is a continuation of the original concept of the Taman Botani development. The park, an undulating area, with gently sloping sections, which consists of large lawns, stretches over 12.7 acres. The park is home to a collection of different species of plants, utilised for study and scientific research, conservation, exhibition, and educational purposes. There are 5 themes of plant collections on display, such as; Lawn & Graminaceae Garden, Malaysian Herbs & Medicinal Plants Collection, Plant Conservatory, Zingiberales Garden, and Forest Fringe & Aboriginal Medicinal Plants Collection. This space is designed to create and preserve the plants' natural habitats. With its rich ethnobotanical collection, the park has been a proud host to several programmes, such as the Local Agenda 21 Putrajaya Programme that promotes conservation and botanical knowledge to school children, as well as the Prelaunch Ceremony of the Putrajaya Tropical Bamboo Forest, which aims to ensure the sustainability of a bamboo collection for the nation.

Landscape is envisaged as an important aspect of this development, with careful attention being paid to the various elements which unite the four components together. The landscape allows end users to have a daily encounter with nature, either by walking through a shaded boulevard, sitting under a tree canopy, appreciating a special leaf pattern, or feeling the rays of the sun filtering through a lush crown of swaying leaves. Two central landscape plazas are located at each end of Phase 1, with 3 green corridors along the Northern and Southern boundary, as well the central spine, acting as unifying green fingers and nodes which allow for car-free pedestrian movement through the retail zones, to the offices, and residential zones. The Western Central Plaza, named Centrus Arena, is designed as a welcoming arrival space with a delightful water feature. Taking advantage of the diverse level changes, step-seats are incorporated, with a central stage surrounded by water which can easily be used as a performing arts venue, or as a gathering space for exhibitions and celebrations. Terraces of planters are integrated generously into the seating steps, so that shade from clusters of trees provides comfort and reduces the heat island effect when in use by the community. Rows of neatly trimmed Aglaia odorata shrubs, form a series of green steps, reinforcing the circular form of the amphitheatre seating.

Tropicana Avenue Tropicana, Selangor

Located along Jalan Persiaran Tropicana, Tropicana Avenue is a mixed commercial hub, which comprises serviced residences, offices, and retail lots. The ground level landscape covers the entry drop-off area, the garden at the retail area, and the perimeter planting which employs a linear and structural style. At the podium level, the landscape design is more minimalist, with the planting of Leopard Trees forming a green avenue with open spaces. 7 species of trees, and 26 species of shrubs have been planted at the Residential tower to create a recreation and relaxing area surrounding the court, swimming pool, fitness, playground, and BBQ areas.

SAFRA Punggol Singapore

SAFRA Punggol Club Building is a 'Family Lifestyle Resort', located at Sentul Crescent, Singapore, and is the first eco-friendly SAFRA club to receive the prestigious Building and Construction Authority Green Mark Platinum award. Featuring the interactive water theme park, 'Splash', this development, proclaiming to be Asia's largest indoor wet play facility and childcare centre, also boasts a special selection of F&B options, a bowling centre, EnergyOne gym with IPPT facilities, sports kiosks offering sports equipment, spa, as well as other wellness related facilities. From the existing Punggol waterway and its surrounding sloping terrain, the concept for SAFRA Punggol is based on Cascading Terraces and Flowing Water. Images of terraced fields and hanging gardens with water as the source flowing into the waterway help to strengthen the concept. Lush tropical planting, with different layers of matured palms, trees, and various flowering shrubs, provides a sense of welcome at the main drop-off area. Each level of the structure has evergreen plants, draped casually over the facade, creating a cascading effect, mirroring the sparkling waterway at the exit.

The Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD) landscape master plan aims to enhance the traditional Chinese heritage pavilion, donated by the famous actor, Jackie Chan, and place it amidst a contemporary architectural backdrop. The landscape is intricately oriented to strike a balance between the aesthetic and the academic. It provides a quality space for SUTD to celebrate both teaching and learning opportunities, in an open and transparent way. This sustainable building strategy is consolidated by the pervasive use of passive environmental control implementations. These help to realise an all-encompassing signature, 'green lifestyle', for on-campus living. In order to provide a visual and sensual experience within the campus, lush, bold, landscaped areas are used to provide a seamless transition from semi-indoor spaces to the outdoors. In addition, a 4600 sq m bio-pond acts as a catchment area, which holds channel water for irrigation to service the growing biodiversity of flora & fauna of the enhanced landscape that has evolved over time. The residential blocks are laid out in a way so as to maximise viewing the internal precinct space, in which the mystic spines of the 'forest walk', and signature landmark pavilions, are visible.

Mercedes Benz Kinrara Bandar Kinrara, Selangor

Matching its reputation in the automotive industry, Mercedes Benz now also owns the bragging rights for having the first green industrial building in Subang Jaya. Designed as both an auto gallery, and a training centre, the premise has also been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's (LEED) Gold Certification. The landscape design derived its concept from the famous Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian's masterpieces, with neoplasticism style, featuring a white background with grids of horizontal and vertical lines and three primary colours; red, blue and yellow. The Central Water Courtyard adapted this famous composition, showcasing timber walkways, water elements, and a selection of shrubs, to recreate the masterpiece as a landscaped interpretation. The level of quality and attention to detail in the completed environment aims to project to visitors, customers, and staff alike, the powerful, organised and detail-oriented message Mercedes-Benz emits to the automotive industry and the world.

Uptown Streetscape

Damansara Uptown, Selangor

The Damansara Uptown district has revitalised its streetscape infrastructure, with a series of petite parks, a carefully considered combination of shrubs, cycle-friendly lanes, and pedestrian safety footpaths that change the way we traverse through urban streetscapes. Damansara Uptown envisioned an holistic streetscape renewal development which combines all the elements of public green infrastructure. Success has been achieved, with immaculate streetscape improvements, improved safety for pedestrians, and improvements made to the existing green link for the Uptown street renewal project. At the Starling Mall, the 'Mall in a Park' concept provides a transitional interface between the relaxing forestry and the urban hustle and bustle. The landscape completely changed the inhabited terrain of the ground floor to accommodate peaceful undulating hills, aromatic and shady vegetation, and public art sculptures.

La Promenade Samarahan, Sarawak

La Promenade is a French-themed, high-end, mixed development, based on a modern lifestyle concept, with lushly landscaped features right from the entrance, and leading to the distinctive, wide central boulevard. This development leads the way in luxury living, with an emphasis on lifestyle, safety, and a healthy green environment. It sprawls majestically over 80 hectares, with a mixed development of landed residences, high-rise condominium blocks, a shopping mall, a commercial centre, a clubhouse, and a 10-storey office tower. An entire kilometre of signature Norfolk pine trees was planted to form different landscape characters for the commercial precincts, with extended green fingers pointing towards each precinct. In addition, approximately 15% of the development land is reserved for common green spaces, including linear parks within and outside each precinct, the 1km Boulevard with a cycling path and jogging path, and a constructed yet serene lake with a natural bio-filter system.

Reef Island Manama, Bahrain

Reef Island, the fastest growing financial centre, offers its residents and guests all the spoils of a bustling cosmopolitan city, complemented by the tranquillity of a tropical island getaway. Conceived as Bahrain's benchmark of luxury living, Reef Island covers an exclusive living experience, on a purpose-built, spiral shaped atoll. Reef Island is a resort island, which includes a marina, a number of international hotels, apartments, residential villas, yacht clubs and spas. There is also a retail centre, medical centre, aquarium, and exhibition building. Everything in the landscape, in varying degrees, sits within a maritime theme. From the paving patterns, to the hand rails, even the spatial lay out, constantly refer back to the main concept. Reef Island's outdoor spaces have been designed with 'alfresco' dining and lifestyle in mind. This is something new for the area, as, due to the weather and culture, the outdoors are often not utilised well. To achieve this, the landscape is dotted with parks, spill-out areas, and waterfront promenades, all designed with shade in mind, to offer the residents a new landscape experience.

Suntec City Singapore

Nestled within Singapore's bustling Central Business District lies Temasek Plaza. It is the home to the existing Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Suntec City Mall, and the Fountain of Wealth. With underutilised areas, lack of green spaces and poor connectivity around the five Towers and to the Fountain, the existing site called for a landscape redevelopment. As the site is a major iconic attraction, the space's civic role and function needed to be considered in the design. Focusing efforts on the level one Fountain Plaza, and the Sky Dining roof area on level three, the design team aimed to redefine the spaces with a stronger identity, a clearer purpose and a sense of cohesion, while maintaining a delicate aesthetic throughout the development.

Dataran PHB takes a bold step and gives a new breath of life to the 21 year old Peremba Square, with a make-over to the exterior landscape spaces. This project aims to uplift the image and transform it into a more appealing urban commercial zone. The project involved a transplant of a large quantity of existing plants to minimise costs. The upgrading project focused on a low-maintenance approach, low plant mortality rate, and a neat and tidy appearance, with minimal disturbance to day-to-day office operation. Hence, the design emphasises clean, linear lines, planters, shrubs and hedges, intertwined with seating and resting areas.

Sited on a large expanse of agricultural land, Mangala Resort & Spa is located in an area surrounded by palm oil plantations. This resort is a natural haven, an 'accent on the green' that breaks the bustling monotony between cityscapes. As beautiful as it is unique, Mangala Resort & Spa, as its Sanskrit name suggests, is also a place of auspicious well-being. The landscape concept, complementing the existing agricultural greenery alongside the built environment is a vision that turns out to be a perfectly symbolic way to anticipate the benefits of the existing surroundings. The green architecture is found in the design's awareness of the site, its sensitivity to Malaysia's tropical climate and landscape, and its mission of sustainability. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Taipei Taipei, Taiwan

The Mandarin Oriental, Taipei is a re-development of a previously demolished hotel and presently adorned with internal landscape designed for multiple cameo and photo-opportunity locations for luxurious wedding photography, in line with Taipei's reputation as a focused wedding industry destination. The design style is both tropical and romantic, keeping in context with the eclectic classical (and somewhat pastiche) style of the architecture, designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG). The upper floors are a series of interconnected yet different spaces which provide multiple garden vignettes for photo-shoots and gatherings. A formal outdoor staircase, with stone balusters and rails, provides an elegant transition from the level 7 rooftop chapel and chapel garden, down through an intermediate terrace at level 6 and onto the level 5 pool deck with its mini-plazas and ornate steel circular arbours. Opposite the pool on the level 5 podium is a circular plaza with ornate inlaid tile paving which doubles as a spillover space for the adjacent restaurant and an outdoor wedding venue. A circular ornate steel pergola creates a focal point for photographs and reinforces the sense of space. The Chapel Garden with its beautiful three-tier fountain, plaza and belvedere, is designed for outdoor weddings where the service can be conducted beneath a circular pergola fronted with an area of plaza for guest seating.

Belum Rainforest Pavilion & Villa Santubong set themselves apart as a luxury hotel and meeting destination as they are situated on the 130 million year-old Belum Rainforest Island, surrounded by the man-made Temenggor Lake, created in the late 1960s. The location itself is a site to behold, befitting the 'Royal' and 'Protected' status given in 2003. This is one of the last refuges in Peninsular Malaysia for endangered wild animals like elephants, tapirs, tigers, and 10 species of hornbills. An ideal location for a getaway, this eco-tourism destination is fitted out in luxury and comfort; suitable for large families and groups. Inspired by the breath-taking original landscape of the forest, the design intent is to merge the old rainforest seamlessly with newly added landscape design. Carefully selected trees approved by arborists ensured native species were maintained in the area. Villa Santubong is surrounded by lush green forest and celebrates life in the trees with a platform to view the Belum Rainforest and Temenggor Lake. Guests can enjoy the cheerful sound of birds singing while basking in the sun. The Belum Rainforest Pavilion provides meeting seminar packages, complete with classrooms, banquet halls, theatres, and conference rooms. This conducive and comfortable space for work and play has a landscape background providing high visual value in a calm, green environment.

Heritance Negombo Sri Lanka

Heritance is a tropical hotel situated in the Sri Lankan east coast town of Negombo, a fishing village that is vibrant and rich in culture and tradition. The hotel is set on a beautiful, sprawling 1km stretch of pristine beach, a favourite area used by local families and fishermen alike. Everything about the hotel and site speaks to the local vernacular. The materials and plants, the colours and textures, even the vibrant energy of the people themselves are part of the hotel's essence, and this informed the design philosophy for the surrounding landscape. Much of the vegetation used is sourced locally. Some, like the Scaevola, were grown at the same site of the hotel before being trimmed and cut for landscape features. Others, such as the Barringtonia trees, were air-layered from existing big trees, a process which yielded 30 child trees from one parent tree. The human element is visible everywhere, from the stone walls, built by local hands, with local stone, to the faces and personalities of the sculptures themselves that meander through the landscape, each one modelled on the face of a person on site. It is in this setting that tourists can sit on the balcony, and with the landscape in the foreground, watch the fishing boats gently bobbing up and down upon the waves, as they wait patiently for their catch.

Swiss-Garden Residences Kuala Lumpur is strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, wedged between bustling Bukit Bintang and colourful Chinatown. The residences offer business and leisure travellers a refined experience with rooms in warm earth tones, equipped with modern amenities for the ultimate ambience, set in lush tropical recreational floors with water channels interconnecting various recreational and F&B spaces. Designed to be a tropical resort above the city, the residences offer guests a lush tropical setting from the moment of arrival, with verdant plantings and a tectonic walk decorating the entrance water feature. The ambience is further accented by giant rain trees, preserved on the main street. Setting itself apart from the norm, the landscape incorporates water gardens on the outskirts of the gymnasium area; a sensational play of serene blue and green, the perfect view for working up a sweat. The podium level pool terrace shimmers in the bright sun, the ultimate place for a cool down swim or a leisurely wade. The planting is also further elevated to the sky gardens on certain levels of the building. Water channels on the podium level interconnect and form a fluid web, interwoven between activity spaces and lush planting. The end result is a multi-experience space, with surprises at every turn.

Rizhao International Ocean City Shandong, China

To reflect the importance of a port city, and to improve the status of the urban functions of Rizhao Peninsular, located at the Shandong Peninsula Economic Zone, the city is planned as a 'Blue Special Economic Zone', to reflect national strategy and focus on economic and technological development of marine economies. The site area of Rizhao International Ocean City is 1264 ha, with an estimated total construction area of 12,565,130 m2. With the international marine economy technology development direction in mind, the city will seize the opportunity from the developing Shandong Peninsula Blue Economic Zone, use technology and innovation as the driving force, and foster the development of marine industries. The Landscape Concept is Green Ocean, with the emphasis on creating a city in a garden, with ocean characteristics, in which people are priority elements. This will mitigate the impact of rapid urbanisation and create a city where people live, work and play.

Sungai Kayu Ara, Selangor The landscape master plan for Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara is heading towards sustainable design development, emphasising responsive, regenerative environment, which contributes to healthy communities. Sustainable landscapes sequester carbon, clean the air and water, increase energy efficiency, restore habitats, and create value through significant economic, social and environmental benefits. The landscape sustainable master plan focuses on the effort of revitalising the polluted Sungai Kayu Ara. This effort is vital due to its potential of providing a green niche within the local community. The river corridor shall be a new recreational and open space, promoting community and social awareness, emphasising sustainable design development, and creating a place making identity for Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara River revitalisation strategies create eco-corridor enhancement for natural promenades, to integrate spaces for recreation and to improve water quality and ecological functions, through building a living colony. Bandar Ainsdale township development sprawls across 562 acres of Seremban. The master plan aims to create and transform the space into an interesting feature, with unique characteristics and is highly functional in terms of ecological, hydrological and human activity, yet designed with low maintenance in mind. The master plans adopts the metaphor of a Leaf Cell and translates that into spaces and connectivity with a sustainable approach incorporating the entire development of Bandar Ainsdale. The development will be an icon of a new emerging township in the area, demonstrating a unique identity, and act as a gateway to Seremban.

Envisioned as an urban living destination, Subang Jaya City Centre is set to become a transit oriented development, with the integration of connectivity and living green, with the establishment of a good connection from one place to another and a vibrant, sustainable environment. Rapid urbanisation has caused numerous changes to the built and natural environments. Hence, managing developments, by instilling landscape values, is essential. The landscape concept for Subang Jaya City Centre Boulevard is inspired by the effort to bring nature back into built environments. The intricate details of nature such as tree bark, water flow, leaf veins, even the shadows cast by a clump of trees have inspired the designers to translate these elements into their plans. Setia Eco Glades Landscape Master Plan Cyberjaya, Selangor

Setia Eco Glades master plan combines the development site and the adjacent 217.22 acre Cyber Park, bringing the best of both entities together to benefit the residents of this bespoke development, as well as members of the public. The existing natural assets within the site are; a regenerating secondary lowland forest merged with riverine and wetland plant associations; a series of old tin mining ponds which hold permanent bodies of relatively good quality water; undulating terrain; very active bird and fish communities, plus other associated local fauna. The strategy aims to: 1. Maintain the spirit of place by retaining and even enhancing as much of its current inherent qualities; sights, sounds and smells, and both hydraulic and vegetative ecosystems 2. Kundang Estates Kundang, Selangor

Kundang is a cosy, intimate enclave nestled in greater Kuala Lumpur and is home to many attractions for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Once a tin-mining settlement before becoming a haven for agriculture, Kundang maintains its characteristic verdant surroundings. Much of Kundang's quaint character is preserved - its rustic homes and old-fashioned coffee shops maintain their historic charm. The pace of life in Kundang is considerably slower, allowing visitors and residents alike to have a more relaxed lifestyle. Kundang Estates macro space planning focuses on specific features of nature, and the maximisation landscape opportunities for the needs of the residents. Other components being considered in this process are an inventory and analysis study, realisation of 'estates' look and feel, and the existing built environment around the development. Kundang Estates offer multi-faceted recreational facilities, enabling everyone from toddlers, to teens, to the elderly to make the most out of the activities offered. The different concepts and landscapes of the four interconnected parks encourage residents of all ages to spend more time outdoors.

Setia Eco Cascadia Landscape Master Plan Johor Bahru, Johor

Setia Eco Cascadia is situated on plantation area and gazetted as green areas for agricultural use. The geology of this project site is located on largely shale and sandstone. This development site consists of 7 peaks of topography, followed by an undulating hierarchy of medium level and low level topography. The existing land contours had a large influence on the master planning for the development. The solution was to work with the topography, hence minimising clearing, excavation, and filling work. The cascade concept was chosen as it reflects the uniqueness of the original topography where the low-lying wetland area is retained and transformed into Waterfall and Metamorphosis Park. The various streams are turned into green spaces which function as recreational areas, and water catchment and outlet discharge areas.

Perak Botanical Gardens development aims to create a scientific centre focused on the purposes of education, research, preservation and conservation of the local landscape, inline with the site being the centre of eco-tourism and heritage. This report aims to provide guidance in the development of the landscape to the parties involved in the planning and development of Perak Botanical Gardens and to the public in general. In addition, it also used a strategic development plan of a Botanical Garden, in line with the 10th Malaysia Plan, as highlighted under the National Landscape Programme.

Estuari Puteri Harbour, Johor

Sprawling over 330.24 acres of land, the site of the Estuari development project is surrounded by catalytic landmark development in the Iskandar Region. The site's northern boundary is carved by Sungai Perepat, with its matured mangrove forest that slowly opens up to an estuary at its northeast corner. Together with the master planning process, the landscape master plan developed an approach that focused on the importance of the landscape layout, promoting various types of greenscapes, catering to different user backgrounds and age. This approach led to the dedication of over 30 acres of land for the creation of public open spaces with additional 7.48km long greenbelts. The greenbelts connect the entire development together, allowing people to walk safely throughout the development. The master plan also includes two major existing water contexts into the planning in an effort to create an environment that allows good access to nature for the enjoyment of the public, resulting in the inclusion of a public promenade, facing the Tebrau Straits, and a mangrove esplanade park, in the overall planning scheme.

Inspired by Y.A.B, Chief Minister of Penang's suggestion that cooperation between the professional bodies and the private sector could contribute through a 'Corporate Social Responsibility' (CSR) programme. Specifically focused on the 'park and garden' initiative, this idea encourages proliferating facilities for the public. The goal of this CSR, to provide additional landscape and recreation spaces for the public, began in 2011. By 2016, the 'Corporate Social Responsibility' (CSR) programme has made improvements and was rebranded to 'PUBLIC, PRIVATE, PEOPLE, PARTNERSHIP-4P's'. Putrajaya Doves Singing Competition Gurindam Merbuk Putrajaya Putrajaya The development of Putrajaya resulted in thousands of species of plants being planted, which attracted species of insects, birds, bees etc. One of the species of birds found in Taman Wetland and around Putrajaya are doves (merbuk). On 4 June 2016, Perbadanan Putrajaya organised a symbolic Putrajaya Doves Singing Competition, which was attended by groups from neighbouring ASEAN countries at Padang Semarak, Taman Wetland, Putrajaya. This event involves all aspects of social, economic and environmental awareness as well as the cultural aspect, which is the fourth pillar of sustainable development. The doves singing activity is not just a leisure activity but also crosses religious, racial, and cultural demographics in the ASEAN region. Alur Teratai at Taman Bandar, Pasir Gudang, was a former drainage trench that divided the small green area. Before the transformation of Alur Teratai, the existing area was uninviting, causing unhealthy social activities and vandalism within this area. The area was transformed into a recreational area by upgrading the existing drainage system to a stream that creates a natural and peaceful environment throughout the area. By adding walkways and hardscape elements such as concrete seating, the area became a new attraction to Taman Bandar, fully functional for Pasir Gudang's residents to undertake many activities while enjoying the serenity of the natural environment. The purpose here is to use this verse as a design inspiration, as it reminds human beings about the importance of protecting and appreciating the natural beauty which exists around us. In order to achieve sustainable life, this concept emphasises the importance of awareness, and human intervention, to improve the existing elements found at Kampung Janda Baik. This project seeks to upgrade, refurbish, and rearrange these spaces. Therefore, we propose to infill the area with beautiful and functional gardens to bring joy to the members of the local community.

Eco Public Art Placemaking Framework

The integration of public art in landscape architecture designs has been known to promote activities, values, functions and roles to the public. The discourse on the contribution of public art towards the social wellbeing of society has gained growing attention among landscape architects, local authorities and academicians over the past three decades. This is especially relevant in promoting public participation that is in line with Local Agenda 21. The public's engagement in the execution of public art has been widely advocated as part of the placemaking process. However, in Malaysia, there is currently no existing framework that can act as a point of reference for landscape architects to adopt when engaging with the public in this way. Furthermore, there is an escalating concern in the industry about the need to create public space projects that are green and eco-friendly, while also improving the public's appreciation and awareness of the environment. To achieve this, the concept of Eco Public Art as an approach to transform underutilised public spaces has been widely implemented in many countries. The aim of this research was to establish the Eco Public Art Placemaking Framework to guide Local Authorities and Landscape Architects to engender public participation in the public art process, in line with Local Agenda 21. This research has examined Laman Seni Shah Alam as a Case Study, which is a back lane revitalisation project that has been transformed through Eco Public Art principles.

The Predictors of Butterfly Diversity in Small Urban Parks Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

In the face of urban green spaces becoming smaller and fragmented due to urbanisation, their capability to serve as habitats for wildlife is threatened. In the tropical countries, there is a dearth of knowledge about biodiversity in urban green spaces - and especially smaller green areas. This study analyses the characteristics of small urban parks in relation to urban biodiversity and ecological functions. We studied nine small urban parks in Malaysia using the combined field survey method of structured observation and field measurements. The measured variables were divided into the three broad categories of physical characteristics, species richness and human factors. We used butterflies as the indicator because they are relatively easy to recognise, sensitive to environmental change, have unique life cycles, and biological demands, that make them suitable for assessing biodiversity. Pearson correlations and multiple regressions were conducted to analyse the relationships between the variables and to identify which of these have a significant effect on butterfly species richness and abundance. Findings show that butterfly species richness is positively influenced by the percentage of canopy cover, total shrubs, richness of shrub species, presence of flowering shrubs, and presence of exotic (non-native) vegetation.

It was found that park size did not significantly impact butterfly richness or abundance. Butterfly abundance was found to be significantly (and positively) related to percentage of canopy cover, total vegetation, presence of native vegetation, shrub abundance, diversity of shrub species, total flowering plants and number of palms. Human-related factors and anthropogenic disturbance were not significantly impacting butterfly species and abundance, as butterflies were not affected by visitor density, activities and noise levels. Two general recommendations for small urban parks to enhance butterfly diversity are provided: 1. Development and management plans for small urban parks should emphasise the internal quality of the parks and incorporate social-ecological principles for achieving biodiversity conservation goals, and 2. Newly established small urban parks should have a planting design and configuration that provides food, habitat and protection for butterflies.

Impact of Green Facade: Energy Saving on Building Cooling Loads Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Energy efficiency is one of the current issues that has been debated due to the shortcoming of resources and its global impact on climate change. Recently, the usage of energy for cooling has been recorded by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on 20 April 2016 at an all-time high, peak demand of 17,788 MW, due to the heat wave of El Nino weather phenomenon (Babulal 2016). An intervention in bringing vegetation into a manmade environment as a passive technique has been attested to stimulate a better living environment and promote energy efficiency. Innovations in implementing vegetation onto exterior building facades such as via a green roof, green wall, or vertical greenery systems (VGS) which include green facades, have been identified in encouraging potentials to ameliorate microclimate, not only on external and internal building environment, but also current and future urban climate conditions (Kuttler 2012). Various studies have been conducted in demonstrating the positive impacts of these applications around the globe, in various climates, and locations. These techniques have been recognised worldwide as being able to reduce energy usage for air conditioning (Chen et al. 2013; Di & Wang 1999; Niachou et al. 2001; Stec et al. 2005; Wong et al. 2009). Vertical foliage of the climbers (providing shade and shadow) used on green facades is identified as the main contributor for the energy saving (Perez et al. 2011a, b). However, little is known about the performance of green facades as a passive cooling solution on real scale building in tropical climates. Also, an inadequate study on the investigation of the impact of green facades on energy saving of cooling loads in the tropics. Therefore, this study is designed to investigate the energy saving performance from the implementation of green facade in the context of tropical climate and on real scale buildings.

Malaysian Threatened and Rare Tree Landscape Guideline PROLEM STATEMENT

OBJECTIVES To encourage greater use of threatened and rare native tree species within landscape development. To provide a guideline to assist practitioners to identify rare and threatened tree species and how they can be used in landscape architecture.

The change of land use patterns over recent decades has transformed forest ecosystems into a mosaic of habitats, which includes completely deforested and transformed ecosystems. This situation is considered a key threat to biodiversity. The result is that certain native tree species and the ecosystems that they support then become rare or threatened largely due to land use change and a higher resilience risk.

This guideline covers 74 threatened and rare tree species endemic to Malaysia. The list is based on both the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List for Trees, and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Malaysia Plant Red List. The intent of this guide is to be used for current and future landscape architectural practitioners in improving biological diversity conservation, by providing a semi-technical resource for landscape professionals to increase the sectors' knowledge and ability to first be able to identify and then understand how to utilise these species. Consequently, it is our vision that, through a growth in knowledge and awareness about these species and their potential benefits, demand will increase for such species. This in turn will hopefully lead to a higher rate of use of these threatened and rare tree species in urban landscape designs, with the ultimate goal to one day see such species in common use and categorised as least concern tree species. This guideline provides environmental information, botanical characteristics and diagnostic characters for identification of suitable rare and threatened trees for landscape design

METHOD

GOAL To support Malaysia's National Policy on Biological Diversity 2016-2025, where growing awareness of the potential long-term benefits of an intact, resilient and biologically diverse range of ecosystems is presented for the national well-being and long term sustainability of the nation.

1. Data compilation from journals, specialists and websites over a 4 year period. 2. Photography sessions for original photos of tree species and site attributes. 3. Data and images verification processes. The species images and data were assessed and verified with current literature by a specialist university team. 4. Characteristics study and management consideration of species by referring to literature and subject specialists. 5. Focus group discussion with selected panels to validate and finalise the imagery and descriptive information.

DATA ANALYSIS & FINDINGS Data and images were amalysed and summarised into a table and separate pages for each species, which tabulates the environmental, botanical and diagnostic characteristics for identification purposes for each species. The aspect of management consideration of species is important to identify suitable location and management practices to ensure tree survival; hence with such knowledge available, it is included in the guideline.

CONTRIBUTION TO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE KNOWLEDGE Publication of this guideline will help landscapers (practitioners and students) in identifying suitable trees for landscape design and build local sector knowledge to assist in biodiversity conservation. Formal publication of the guideline to be available in soft copy (FOC) is planned for March or April 2017.

Thus, we cooperated with three professional namely; land surveyor (site planning), landscape architect (landscape design) and BIM modeller (BIM professional consumer) to prove the use of BIM can reach the stage of sustainability design and identify the BIM challenges

PROBLEM STATEMENT AND ISSUES Low level of BIM adoption in Malaysian AEC industry (Enegbuma, Aliagha, & Ali, 2014; Zakaria, Nasly, Ahmad, Marshall Ponting, & Zuhairi, 2014). The current global lack of BIM computer skill among landscape architect happens cause of lack of BIM practice, and they still tend to design in the traditional way (Lu & Wang, 2013; Nessel, 2013). ISSUES 1. Less deeper exposure of BIM proven benefit (Zakaria et al., 2014) and the current of lack a reliable scientific basis of landscape architecture for BIM, and the foundation needs the knowledge of the BIM theory and technology (Lu & Wang, 2013) 2. Less request by client (Zakaria et al., 2014) 3. The limitation of landscape component in library combine with complexity of BIM software (Flohr, 2011; Pihlak et al., 2011) and majority of component and application in BIM software are said focus on building structure (Flohr, 2011)

Moreover, BIM is requested infrequently by the client. In addition, there is a limited number of landscape components in our libraries, combined with the complexity of BIM software and the majority of components and applications in BIM software said to focus on building structure. Such issues prompted the researchers to produce a small-scale BIM prototype for the purpose of promoting the benefits of sustainability landscape design.
