CARLTON WOMEN’S TEAM THE STORY SO FAR It was back in the autumn of 1897, at the old Fitzroy ground on Brunswick Street, that Sebastopol’s Jimmy Aitken first led Carlton’s men out for what was the opening round match of the fledgling VFL season. Finally, after 120 long years, Clarkefield’s own Lauren Arnell will similarly be afforded that rare honour – in taking Carlton’s inaugural women’s outfit down the race and onto Ikon Park against Collingwood for the muchanticipated AFLW match in Round 1.

It’s fair to say it’s been a long time coming, but it’s also true that this football club dotted the i’s to again ensure its place in a foundation competition after its official bid was lodged back in April, 2016. Formal confirmation came on the morning of Wednesday 15 June, 2016, when AFL Chairman Mike Fitzpatrick named Carlton as one of the eight licence holders of the inaugural 2017 NAB AFL Women’s competition. The poignancy of the moment would not have been lost on Fitzpatrick himself a pivotal figure in a glory era at Carlton, in seeing representatives of the grateful eight gather for the announcement on the MCG’s hallowed turf. Nor Carlton President Mark LoGiudice.
The story so far
“ Today is a defining moment in the history of our great football club,” LoGiudice said at the time. “ We understand the significance of being a women’s league foundation club and we are extremely honoured to have secured a licence for the inaugural 2017 AFL national women’s competition. “ As a club, we strive to be leaders in gender equality and we will continue to focus on providing pathways and opportunities for women in all areas of our great game. “ On behalf of the Carlton Football Club, I also wish to thank Mike Fitzpatrick and the AFL Commission, Gillon McLachlan and his executive team for their support, and for
recognising our club’s strong sense of commitment to women’s football.” With the imprimatur of members of the board (not the least of whom is the country’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins), LoGiudice, CEO Steven Trigg and Chief Financial Officer Simon Kelleher dedicated much time and energy to the brief, as a Carlton presence in the new AFLW was realised – in keeping with the “no barriers” ethos. Not a day has been lost since that landmark Wednesday in June either, with the well-credentialled Carlton coach Damien Keeping having steadily built a list of 27 women whose honour it will be to don the famous Old Dark Navy Blue guernsey.

Hyundai and MC Labour have also recognised the enormous potential of the AFLW and Carlton’s place in it, in aligning with the women’s team as its co-major partners – at a time when Carlton is perfectly positioned to integrate a women’s team into its current football program as a further demonstration of its commitment to the cause. To quote Trigg: “ We are excited and passionately committed to successfully integrating a women’s team into the Carlton Football Club as part of our whole-of-club approach”. “ We are proud to be building a more diverse football club as we know the
6 2017 AFLW Season Guide carltonfc.com.au
more diverse we are, the more we will grow,” Trigg said. “ We have a genuine appetite for women’s football, the growth and demand is certainly there, and we want our club to be leaders in these plans.” It’s a little-known fact that Carlton was part of what is understood to be the first VFL/AFL club fixture involving women – a Royal Melbourne Hospital charity match involving the Richmond Women’s XVIII before more than 10,000 onlookers at Princes Park on the afternoon of Saturday, August 12, 1933.
The story so far
The match, organised by the home team, formed part of the Club’s gymkhana that day. A past players match was also staged, while members of the Young Chinese Football Club also contributed to the cause. “ We played two 20-minute halves, it was very low-scoring and we won the game,” said the late Myra McKenzie.“ One paper reported that we’d raised 10,000 pounds, but we raised more than that. It was a very enjoyable experience.” But that was very much a one-off, and now, the inaugural Carlton Women’s Team and its captain know
that they’re in it for the long haul... which is why Arnell can’t wait for the first bounce, in the spirit of Jimmy Aitken. “ It’s funny and it’s probably something I shouldn’t admit, but I tear up every single time I run out on the ground – I get quite emotional, so I guess it shows how much it means to you,” she said. “ I think the fact they’re (Carlton) certainly genuine about female football and they’ve also shown they’re genuine in developing us as players. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.”

Message from the CEO
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO It is on the eve of the inaugural 2017 NAB AFL Women’s competition that I am reminded of a relevant line – “you can’t be what you can’t see”. History was made on a sunny day in June 2016, when the AFL recognised Carlton’s strong commitment to women’s football; awarding our proud club one of eight licences for the maiden AFLW competition in 2017. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan called it a ‘revolution’ and it is just that. Now, as we work hard to grow our club, and indeed the inaugural AFLW competition, girls and women alike will now see more of themselves in the face and the operation of the game, and for younger players across the country there will be pathways with aspiration. 8 2017 AFLW Season Guide carltonfc.com.au
In this new competition, traditional rivalries will remain, while new ones will be forged. We are honoured to be opening the history-making season against our old foe Collingwood on Friday night at Ikon Park and we look forward to witnessing a sea of blue in the crowd supporting our women. The women’s coaching panel, led by Damien Keeping and his assistant coaches, which include current Carlton player Dennis Armfield, shows the genuine approach by the Club to successfully integrate the Club’s two football programs. Damien’s football pedigree makes him a compelling fit for this groundbreaking role. We extend our best wishes to Damien and his team ahead of their opening clash.
Message from the CEO
A trailblazer in her own right, Lauren Arnell was named Carlton’s inaugural women’s captain in January. A wonderful ambassador of the game more broadly, Lauren played a significant role in shaping our club’s initial bid for a licence last year. There is little doubt she, and her 26 teammates, will wear and represent the navy blue with a significant amount of pride. We are a club that is striving to be the most inclusive and diverse we can possibly be, not only in the AFL industry, but in the community more generally. We will remain committed to continuing our work in the northern corridor to grow the game, particularly at a grassroots level to encourage participation among female players.
I also take this moment to thank our wonderful AFLW co-major partners Hyundai and MC Labour, as well as partners ZTE, Secure Parking, LaTrobe University, Visy and Vic Health and AFL apparel partner COAR. In short, this is a historic – and significantly important – time for our football club. We look to the inaugural AFL Women’s season with a strong sense of excitement and optimism. There will be no limits on what these players will achieve, as they are already game changers in their own right. History starts here. Kind Regards,
Steven Trigg CEO, Carlton FC

Captain’s Message
In my short time at Carlton, there have been a number of surreal, emotional and life-changing moments. It is fitting that this quote from Mike Fitzpatrick (Carlton great and current AFL Commissioner) has been one of the highlights. What we, as a whole club, have ahead of us is an opportunity. The opportunity for women to play the greatest game on earth wearing the Old Dark Navy Blue guernsey. The opportunity to live childhood dreams that others may not even imagine. The opportunity to grace AFL venues with the support of our entire Carlton family. The opportunity to represent and proudly carry ourselves as a reflection of our

community. Diverse, resilient, loyal, hard-working, passionate people. Meeting Carlton members throughout the last 12 months has demonstrated to both me and my teammates how much this opportunity means beyond the walls of Ikon Park. Male and female supporters, young and old, the passion and loyalty for our great club is something that is unmissable within every Bluebagger. Our team would like to acknowledge and thank the pioneering individuals who have pushed for this opportunity. Thank you for the opportunity you have created for our generation and generations to come. We will do

everything we can to honour your tireless dedication. As players we have worked exceptionally hard on the track and raised standards throughout pre-season. We have 27 leaders on and off the field. We have an incredible support network of coaches and support staff led by our coach Damien Keeping, team manager Tara Bonello and backed by President Mark LoGiudice, the Board, CEO Steven Trigg and his administration staff, Head of Football Andrew McKay, Brendon Bolton, Marc Murphy and all players from the men’s team. We have and will continue to learn elite standards on and off the field.
Our members form the cornerstone of our great club, and our women’s team is so excited to have your support as we pursue our goals together in 2017. Thank you for your ongoing support as we strive to achieve the ultimate success in the inaugural NAB AFLW competition. Female football has come a long way. Much of the yet-to-be- discovered journey, we are looking forward to having you, our passionate members, walk that journey alongside us. 2017 is the year our game changes. Lucky for us this is just the beginning. The hard work starts now. #BoundByBlue

DAMIEN KEEPING This is such a significant period for our historic club – to be a foundation club in the inaugural NAB AFLW competition adds an exciting chapter to our new journey. The opportunity for our playing group and the Club to play a role in the first ever AFLW competition, comes with an enormous responsibility. A responsibility that we respect and continue to strive to fulfil with purpose, passion and commitment. Prior to sharing some highlights of the pre-season with you, I thought it was appropriate to acknowledge the incredible effort that went into the submission to secure our club’s AFLW licence. The ability of key personnel to align and the Club to unite behind the bid proved to be a significant factor in our success in being granted a licence – reflecting our ‘whole of club’ approach.
To President Mark LoGiudice and the Board, CEO Steven Trigg, the Club’s executive team and the countless number of contributors to the bid, thank you. The significance of your efforts will continue to grow over time and forever be etched in the history of our great club. Similarly, the effort towards successfully building the first Carlton AFLW playing list was of enormous proportions and while true success will be measured over time, the endeavour to put together a playing group that could understand the opportunity in front of them and at the same time demonstrate a willingness to create further value to our club experience, is positively playing itself out through the infancy of our program. Back in October 2016, we completed our list and introduced 27 players to the Carlton Football Club. Immediately post draft, the Club hosted our new players and their

S E N I O R families to an introduction of Ikon Park. I hope that as members and supporters, through various club media platforms, you have been able to view and begin to get to know our players, their stories and their individual journeys to being Carlton. Or perhaps you were able to get down to our first training session at Ikon Park back in November 2016. A night that was marked by our first ‘whole of club’ meeting and the unveiling of our newly refurbished facility. Along with a good number of excited supporters, we were fortunate to have Carlton premiership coach, David Parkin attend the night and share the history of the facility with our newly formed playing group. Parkin ceremoniously handed over the reins of history to our AFLW players and shared words of support for their endeavours in the navy blue. The passion and commitment of a ‘Blue Bagger’ has been instilled

upon our players and the way they have applied themselves to their pre-season program and the development of their capability within the game has been professional and thorough. We anticipate the newly formed competition will be fast, physical and exciting to watch, and as such we have prepared accordingly. We will embark on several ‘first time’ opportunities throughout the upcoming season and one such opportunity will be for our club to participate in the first AFLW game against Collingwood this Friday. It will be the first chance we get to perform in front of our members and supporters and the support of the navy blue family at the game will play an important role in the overall club experience on the night. We look forward to sharing the experience with you all. The history of the Carlton Football Club is long and rich and the

We acknowledge and respect where the Club and indeed the game has come from. The sense of belonging that is underpinning their amazing experience at the Carlton Football Club is driving a relentless passion among the team to contribute to the continual growth of our great club. Our hope is that you will unite with us to build a foundation that continues to make being Carlton great within and beyond this historic moment in time. Go Blues! Kind Regards,

GRAHAM
SCOTT
BURGEN
GOWANS
Graham Burgen has an enormous amount of coaching experience, having held the positions of senior coach at the AFL Victoria VWFL Academy and high performance coach at the Calder Cannons FC. His role as senior coach of the AFL Victoria VWFL Academy involved leading and overseeing the development of young talent – a skill that will no doubt be utilised in his new position at Carlton.
As a former senior coach of the AFL Victoria Country Youth Girls team and more recently the senior coach at Longwarry, Gowans brings a wealth of knowledge to Carlton’s women’s team.
“ Our players have attacked the pre-season with plenty of gusto, but also with a cool and calculated approach,” Burgen said.
“ I’ve been supported, challenged and my knowledge of the game has expanded.
“ Damien Keeping is a wonderful senior coach and we have a very good group who are thriving working together. This is a fantastic environment to develop players and coaches and I am very grateful to be part of it.”
78 2017 AFLW Season Guide carltonfc.com.au
“ Even though we haven’t played an official game yet, the experience so far has been very rewarding, so much so the Club has now become a home that I’m deeply passionate about,” Gowans said.
“ Pre-season so far has been very good. The players have experienced a huge learning curve and have been relentless in maximising this opportunity, with accountability and discipline a feature of this program.”

LANGE
Jackson Kornberg, a lifelong Bluebagger, arrives at Ikon Park from the Sandringham Dragons Football Club, where he held the role of assistant coach. He has also been an assistant coach for the AFL Victoria Youth Girls and was involved in elite training programs. His ability to understand and identify trends in the game will make him a valuable resource and asset to the team.
Jane Lange is described as one of the most talented female coaches in the game. She not only coached the highly successful Darebin Falcons to their fourth straight premiership in 2016, she also played in the side as well. A teacher by trade, Lange will no doubt help create a learning environment for the playing group and set a high standard around the Club.
“ I’m absolutely loving this experience. To play a part in the inaugural season and see the women finally achieving their dream of playing AFL is something I will hold with me forever,” Jackson said.
“ Since walking through the door of the Carlton Football Club I have felt nothing but welcomed and valued,” Lange said.
“ Pre-season has been really great – the girls are really receptive to what we are teaching them and have a real thirst for knowledge.”
“ Damien has done a wonderful job bringing this team together and we’ve all been working around the clock to prepare for Round 1. “ It’s such a privilege to be part of this groundbreaking women’s league, I don’t take a moment for granted.”

Review Story
REVIEW STORY The next phase of the historic Carlton women’s team took place in November last year when the newly established side took to the field at Ikon Park for the first time. As the sun set over the squad’s new home of football, a strong crowd packed the grandstands to watch their first ever pre-season training session.
Carlton CEO Steven Trigg said as he addressed the group. “ It is a great occasion for us. Here from the whole club are representatives from our Board, including Mark LoGiudice, all of our players, staff and support staff, from both the men’s and women’s teams.”
To mark the significance of the night, the entire club came together for a whole-of-club meeting.
To further welcome our female players to their new club, the teams recently refurbished elite training facilities were unveiled.
“ We are here to welcome and launch our new team,”
Senior women’s coach Damien Keeping was one of many staff who

the team ahead of the significant training session.
“ It’s come an incredible way. That part of the ground that we have been allocated has an enormous history to it and we feel privileged that the Club has allocated that space to us, said Keeping.
“ This is new for all of you, you’re going down a path no one has trod before, that’s pretty exciting stuff in my opinion”, said Parkin.
“ I think it’s going to provide a fantastic experience for our players right through the program.”
With a wealth of wisdom bestowed on them, an elite training facility, and the Carlton faithful eagerly waiting, the players ran up the race and graced the hallowed turf of Ikon Park for the first time, as they officially launched their pre-season.
Three-time Carlton premiership coach David Parkin was a surprise guest on the night, secretly waiting in the changerooms to address
“ You’re starting something that is very special.”

Game Changers
GAME CHANGERS The Carlton faithful have united, backing the Game Changers as they embark on their inaugural season of the AFLW competition. Foundation members will flood the grandstands of Ikon Park, as well as venues across the country, wearing a Game Changers scarf specially designed by one of Carlton’s marquee players, Darcy Vescio. When she’s not on the training track or kicking goals, the gun forward works as a graphic designer for Carlton, and rightfully took the lead on crafting a scarf that epitomises the newly formed team. “ For me, being a designer at Carlton lets me explore another element of the Club,” Vescio said. “ When you’re wearing the jumper, you wear it with pride. So, when you are designing something you have to encapsulate that in a different sense,
86 2017 AFLW Season Guide carltonfc.com.au
because you’re not actually out there playing, but you want to show that you have that emotion and feeling through your design.” To add further meaning to the iconic piece, the classic woollen scarf is produced locally. “ It’s produced and knitted here in East Brunswick in our family business that’s been going since 1968,” said Anthony Mananov, director of LMB Knitwear. “ We are wrapped to be a part of it. We think it’s such a great initiative,” Mananov added. Foundation members’ names will also be etched in history as they are set to be painted on the walls of the newly refurbished change rooms. It’s not too late to sign up as a foundation member and back our game changers. Click here to sign up and be bound by blue in 2017.
