Why olunteer? The reasons why people volunteer for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation are as diverse as our volunteers themselves!
Some volunteers want to become more involved with like-minded people doing something worthwhile for their community through the variety of programming at the Monon Community Center. Others enjoy being outdoors, have a passion for the enviroment, and want to do their part to improve habitats and natural areas. Some want to learn new skills and increase their knowledge and experience. And, of course, some people just like to have fun!
Park stewardship volunteers will be needed this fall to assist in habitat preservation projects. Volunteers will learn how to identify and remove invasive plants from our parks and greenways, making a signiďŹ cant positive impact in the native environment. So get your hands dirty and join us as we continue to make the parks a happy and healthy place for humans, animals and plants.
If you’d like to have fun while making a lasting dierence, we invite you to join our team as a volunteer for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation. For more information or to see all available volunteer opportunities go to carmelclayparks.com/volunteer
With opportunities available at more than 16 parks and greenways, the Monon Community Center and our Extended School Enrichment programs, there are plenty of chances to volunteer this fall. Our Extended School Enrichment (ESE) before and after-school program will once again begin serving hundreds of students and families in all 11 Carmel elementary schools. Volunteers can help mentor, tutor and play games with students before and after the scheduled school day. Volunteers can also take part in Adaptive Programing at the Monon Community Center. Adaptive programs cover a wide range of topics from art and cooking to sports and yoga. These programs allow volunteers a chance to support and encourage individuals with disabilities. This is a great opportunity for volunteers who want to make a great connection with participants and have some fun!
This icon is placed next to any program for which we are seeking volunteers. For more information on volunteering, turn to page 70.

CONSTRUCTION
AT THE
MONON COMMUNITY CENTER WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The Monon Community Center (MCC) will receive a well-deserved makeover this fall. The construction project will ensure that we can continue to provide high-quality experiences for our guests through better utilization of space and an increased level of service. Utilization of Space The unique design of the MCC has several current limitations, including multiple areas throughout the facility that experience little or no regular use. At completion of the project, guests will be able to enjoy more fitness space as well as an increase in the variety of fitness equipment available. Level of Service One of the more noticeable changes you’ll see will be the relocation of service desks to more prominent locations. This will allow our staff to provide the community with the highest level of service possible. Improved desk locations will allow our staff to have more daily interaction with you and will upgrade your ability to navigate throughout the facility. Additionally, admittance to the facility will require 100% check-in, creating a much safer and secure facility. We appreciate your cooperation while we update the facility and can’t wait for you to create even more enjoyable experiences with us.

Kawachinagano C ity, osaka, japan Sister City of Carmel
Hello there! My name is Mockle and I am the mascot of Kawachinagano City, Japan. Kawachinagano City and Carmel have been Sister Cities for more than 20 years! Sister Cities are an important partnership that fosters peace and community as two cities grow through tackling issues and overcoming obstacles similar to each.
To commemorate this partnership, Kawachinagano City and Carmel exchanged gifts that represent each city. Kawachinagano City excels primarily in the production of three things:
にほんしゅ
(Nihonshu or Saké)
はがね
(Hagane or Steel)
たけ
(Take or Bamboo)
If youʼd like to learn more and see the gifts from Kawachinagano City in person, visit the Monon Community Center and look for this display case near the front desk of our West Building! CALL 317.848.7275 FOR MORE INFORMATION | 37

HOW good TO BE A
neighbor parks to your local
Local parks are an immeasurable asset to a community. At Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) we strive to offer extraordinary experiences that are safe and educational with an abundance of recreational opportunities at the local parks in your community, all while continuing positive relationships with our neighbors. In planning maintenance, programs and designing new facilities, we challenge ourselves to ensure we are not creating adverse impacts to those that share our boundaries while still maintaining a healthy balance of sustainable landscapes and desirable experiences.
Whether we’re mitigating hazardous trees, improving privacy screening or managing invasive vegetation, we are constantly operating in corridors that are close to our neighbors’ backyards. We encourage feedback through email, phone or even our new app, HAPPiFEET, to be sure we are listening and engaged with issues you feel are important. Our staff enjoys what they do, and takes a passion into each day to make the parks shine and function properly for all of you, and we thought it would be helpful to provide some feedback for you to join us in this effort. Here are a few examples of different items you may want to consider to continue being a good neighbor when you are out and about at one of your local parks: 1. Learn About Nature: It is very common for a park visitor to be well educated on a particular topic they may observe in the parks. In fact, there have been a few invasive plants added to our natural resource management objectives that have been reported by you, in areas that we had not detected them. We appreciate hearing from you as our extra “eyes in the field” about plants or animals you have observed whether they are beautiful examples of biodiversity thriving in a riparian ecosystem or Canada Thistle lurching through an unsuspecting open prairie landscape. 2. Respect the Boundaries: Boundaries are important to delineate property ownership and responsibility. It’s important that as park visitors, we are respectful of our neighbors’ properties and we do not trespass or otherwise impact the partners next door that join us in the efforts to keep the areas clean and safe every day. Additionally, as neighbors, it’s important that you avoid dumping grass trimmings, branches, or trash that may create unsafe areas in the parks or introduce invasive and unwanted vegetation. 3. Identify and Report Feedback: Quite often, a park visitor will report a hazardous condition that has developed in the blink of an eye, such as a fallen tree across the Monon Greenway or a water leak in a park restroom. Feedback like this helps improve our response times, prioritize resources and eliminate hazards before they prolong safety concerns or worsen over time..
4. Volunteer: Our Volunteer Stewardship Projects are a great way to learn more about the parks in your community and help contribute to the lasting efforts to keep them looking great. Not only do we have regular projects available to sign up for on our website, but we also consider new ideas introduced to us by both companies and individuals. We challenge our department to be a good neighbor every day, and we want to encourage our community, whether you are right next door, jumped on a bike to come by or are visiting for the first time to join us in the effort.
