WELCOME | TABLE OF CONTENTS ESCAPE TO FOUNDERS PARK!

I

f you haven’t had a chance to visit Founders Park yet, you better add it to your “to do list” for the summer of 2012! Founders Park is a 35-acre park that provides numerous opportunities for enjoyable escapes. The below features were integral to the design of the park from both an educational perspective and from a standpoint of environmental sensitivity, in order to serve both active and passive users of the park.

Lindsay Labas Marketing Manager llabas@carmelclayparks.com

• 10-acre pond with boardwalks located in the southwest corner of the property and a well head for the City of Carmel Utilities located in the center of the site. Pond provides opportunities for fishing, canoe launches, and outdoor classroom experiences. • Founders Pavilion, located near the center of the park and overlooking the pond. • Fitness and nature trails that provide escapes and emphasize pedestrian movement. These trails are tied into Carmel’s larger network of roadside and greenway trails. • Geological education and play area allows children to play among natural features and learn of the natural processes that shape the environment. • Rugby and lacrosse fields provide a designated area for competition, two sports that are steadily growing in popularity in the Carmel community. • Adequate parking for visitors and buses.

Sue Dillon has been a Carmel resident for over 26 years and has volunteered for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation for over 22 years. Sue’s interest in the development of greenspace for the citizens of Carmel predates the creation of the Carmel Clay park system. She founded Citizens for Greenspace, a group of citizens who partner with local schools, parks and city organizations, developers, scout troops and city government to promote the importance of trees to the community, and was its first president and guiding force for 23 years. Sue established Carey Grove Park as an arboretum through her leadership on the Park Board. New species continue to be added periodically throughout the park system. Sue began the annual Arbor Day celebration in Carmel in 1988 and is an integral piece of the puzzle each year. She works directly with the department staff to organize the event. Sue continues to be a mentor, through this event, to the Boy/Girl Scout groups who volunteer to plant new trees in our parks. Sue has recently retired from the Park Board but continues to serve Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation as President of the Parks Foundation Board. The Carmel Clay Parks Foundation, Inc. is a new charitable organization whose mission will be to enhance the recreational, educational, and cultural life of the community by supporting the Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation system. “How many people are lucky enough to have the opportunity to help plan even a single park, let alone a whole park system? I feel very privileged to have been living in Carmel during a period in its history when so many wonderful people volunteered their time and talents to make such exciting things happen. Carmel is a very special place to live because everyone cares about their families and their community.” - Sue Dillon

LIL' KICKER - THUMPERS

Because Lil' Kickers is first and foremost a child development program, our purpose is really to help children mature on all levels. Our program focuses on helping children build strong physical, intellectual and emotional skills that will help them be successful on and off the soccer field. We believe in teaching children in ways that suit their developmental level. So, you won't see adult-like skill drills in our classes, but you will see teaching methods specifically designed to create an atmosphere that is effective and fun. You will also see happy, confident and sweaty kids who are eager to learn and want to keep coming back for more. Whether your child is new to soccer or has already developed a love for the game, the progressive nature of Lil' Kickers offers a place for children at every level.

Bring your child to a program where you can be active together! Parents and children will play organized games together that help to further develop both your child's motor and soccer skills. This format builds your child's confidence while letting you join in the fun. No class on 07/04. Ages 2-2.5 • Min/max: 3/15 Instructor: Off the Wall Sports • Location: Multiple locations ACTIVITY

ADAPTIVE WHAT IS ADAPTIVE? Adaptive programs are exclusively offered to individuals with special needs. We encourage participation by all individuals and abilities. Our adaptive programs target all ages and are designed to meet the leisure needs and interests of individuals with special needs. The instructor to participant ratio is appropriate to accommodate the needs of the participants. We believe that all individuals should be provided leisure opportunities that allow for performances at their highest level. If you or a family member has special needs and would like to participate in other programs or use our facility, we will be happy to make reasonable accommodations to meet your needs. Please indicate on the registration form if any accommodations are needed for successful inclusion in a program according to the Americans with Disabilities Act and we will be in contact with you to discuss those requests. Requests for accommodations must be made at least two weeks prior to the session desired. A request for accommodations form may be picked up at the Monon Community Center Front Desk or found on our website at carmelclayparks.com.

Voice-overs are hot today! You don't have to be an actor to get voiceover work, but it certainly doesn't hurt! With such notable talent as James Earl Jones, Linda Hunt, and Donald Sutherland lending their voices to commercials, films, and videos, one would think that it would be next to impossible to break into this field. FitLinxx is a computer program that coaches users through their workout for better safety and form during every exercise. You have the opportunity to also track your cardiovascular workouts and will receive periodic analysis of your workout routines. When you schedule your appointment, you will meet with one of our knowledgeable attendants who will guide you through the workout session and teach you how to get started. FitLinxx users simply type in their PIN (selected during your appointment with a Fitness Attendant) to display their machine settings and target weights. As you exercise, FitLinxx coaches you on speed and range of motion. The FitLinxx system consists of 17 strength machines in our circuit. WELLNESS PERSONAL TRAINING The benefits of working with a personal trainer are numerous. Are you completely new to exercise and aren’t sure where to begin? Are you already physically fit but need an extra push to reach your goals? The certified personal trainers at the Monon Community Center are here to help. Our goal is to help you meet YOUR goal.

FAQS ABOUT PERSONAL TRAINING AT THE MCC How do I get started? Contact Lindsay Willard, Fitness Supervisor, at 317.573.5249 or lwillard@carmelclayparks.com. If there is a certain trainer you’d like to work with, Lindsay can put you in touch with him or her. If you aren’t sure with whom you’d like to train, Lindsay can match you to the best trainer for your individual needs. Your first appointment will be one hour in length and must be paid for in advance. Do I have to be a member of the Monon Community Center or a Carmel/Clay resident to do personal training? Not at all. No membership is required, and you do not have to live in Carmel or Clay Township to participate. What will we do during our first appointment together? You will be asked to complete a health history form and you’ll discuss your goals, needs, and limitations with your trainer so that a safe, effective, client-specific program can be created for you. Your trainer will perform a body assessment, and you will also be exercising. Please dress appropriately.

How often should I plan to meet with a personal trainer? The answer to this is entirely up to you and what works best for you personally. Some guests meet with a trainer one time, simply to receive some guidance on a program they should follow. Some guests meet with a trainer once a month, once a week or even multiple times per week. I’m in terrible shape and I’m a little intimidated by the thought of working with a trainer. Is personal training right for me? Our trainers have worked with people in all different stages of physical fitness. You’ll appreciate their patience and willingness to work with you, no matter how fit (or un-fit) you are! No question is a bad question, so come ready to work hard and learn a lot in the process.

CARDIO WHAT IS CARDIO EXERCISE?

Cardiovascular exercise is designed to increase your overall stamina, burn calories, and improve the function and efficiency of your heart and lungs. It will also help with managing many health risks, such as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

CARDIO DANCE In this high-energy class, you will combine dance and fitness moves for an excellent calorie-burning workout. No sense of rhythm or dance experience necessary!

CYCLE Join a high-intensity, cardiovascular workout using a specially designed stationary bike. You can work at your own pace and resistance level as the instructor takes you through drills and hills geared toward improving your cardiovascular fitness. LOW IMPACT Appropriate for the beginning exerciser, seniors, or those recovering from injury, this class is a safe way to elevate the heart rate and experience a great workout while minimizing impact to joints. STEP IT UP Using step choreography, get your heart pumping with this cardiovascular workout that targets all of your lower body muscles. TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING A continuous cardio and full-body resistance training class, this athletic workout uses a variety of equipment and combines cardio activities with built-in recovery for an efficient, easy-to-follow workout. TURBOKICK Experience the fun and energy of a Turbokick class! This fast-paced and music-driven class uses kicking, punching, and boxing techniques to improve cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, and flexibility. This class is the ultimate cardio challenge!

CARDIO MIX A cardio workout to shake up your routine, this class will increase your heart rate and challenge people of all fitness levels.

OUTDOOR BOOT CAMP (MAY THROUGH OCTOBER) Head outside for our most challenging group fitness class of them all! Something different will be offered each week as a way to shake up your routine. This class meets outside under the Oasis; bring your own water and a towel. Please call the weather hotline at 317.843.3870 in case of inclement weather.

CARDIO SCULPT Burn plenty of calories in this challenging class, which combines intervals of strength and cardiovascular exercises.

GROUP FITNESS WELLNESS COACHING

MIND/BODY/FLEXIBILITY WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY MIND/BODY/FLEXIBILITY?

Mind-body exercise is simply physical activity performed with an internal focus. It can improve not only flexibility, strength, posture and balance, but also coordination, stress management and focus.

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation has partnered with Licensed Wellcoach Sharon McGoff to provide you with specialized strategies for improving your health, fitness, nutrition, weight, and stress level. The coaching sessions are confidential and can be scheduled to fit with your lifestyle.

To schedule an appointment, contact Sharon McGoff at 317.294.2482.

STRENGTH WHY IS STRENGTH TRAINING IMPORTANT?

Strength training is important because of its role in building and maintaining muscle. Maintaining and building muscle is good for your metabolism, makes you strong, prevents falling and injury, and lifts your mood.

BASIC STRENGTH Designed for beginning and senior participants, this class emphasizes balance and increased range of motion while performing exercises intended to strengthen all muscle groups. STRICTLY STRENGTH Want to develop muscular strength and tone? This easyto-follow workout challenges every major muscle group using a variety of equipment.

MAT PILATES Gain core strength, balance, and symmetry. This original mat workout focuses on controlled, graceful movements to streamline muscles. PILATES/YOGA FUSION A unique blend of Pilates and Yoga movements will elongate and strengthen your muscles. The instructor leads you through Yoga poses and Pilates movements in order to develop muscle tone and flexibility. POWER PILATES Based on the same principles as Mat Pilates, Power Pilates is designed for those looking for an additional push. You will incorporate strength equipment to intensify the basic Pilates movements. GENTLE YOGA Designed for individuals with a limited range of motion, Gentle Yoga is a slower-paced, flexibility-focused version of our traditional Yoga classes. Ideal for seniors, those recovering from injury, or anyone looking for a gentler version of Yoga. YOGA Connect your mind and body while focusing on balance, strength, and flexibility. By focusing on your breath while moving through the yoga poses, you will leave class feeling both energized and calm. SUNRISE YOGA Come greet the day with this intermediate Vinyasa practice held on the park grounds of the Monon Community Center. Classes will take place outside on the East veranda (Fitness B when weather is inclement). Bring your own mat or use one of ours.

We’re good. We’re fast.

People noticed. When people need help now, it’s good to know that St.Vincent Carmel Hospital is one of America’s first two hospitals to earn an Emergency Center of Excellence designation. Our average door-to-doctor time is consistently under 20 minutes. No wonder we received the Outstanding Patient Experience award from HealthGrades. We’re here for you — right when you need us — in The Spirit of Caring.
