Bailey Funkhouser | VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Volunteering with CCPR has been a wonderful experience. What started out as a class project turned into a passion for giving back to my community. I’ve been able to work closely with all kinds of people; from children with their fathers at Princess Ball, all the way to families trying to race their children across the pool in a cardboard box. Not only do I get to work with the radical people of Carmel, but I also get to work with the people who run the whole show. They treat all of their volunteers with great respect and they don’t micro-manage us. This is all a very long elaboration for me to put simply: I love working with CCPR and will most definitely continue to volunteer with them even after my class!

Save the Monarch Butterfly Reversing the population decline
The monarch butterfly is well known for its beautiful orange color, fascinating life cycle, and remarkable annual migration and is the most celebrated butterfly in North America, yet it is on the verge of extinction! Why is this important to you? Monarchs are an indicator species of the health of our environment. Their decline is a visible sign of trouble facing all pollinators in general, such as bees, bats, and birds. Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. Imagine the significance and consequence of losing most of our beautiful flowers and 35 percent of the world’s crops. The monarch is also an insect and as an indicator species, it reflects the health of our insect population. Of all birds in North America, 96 percent feed their young insects. If the monarchs fail, ultimately the entire ecosystem of our planet fails, one species at a time, one after another. The current plight of the monarch is complicated but is easy to understand once you know their life cycle. Monarchs only lay their eggs on milkweed, and its leaves are the only plant the caterpillar can eat. Without milkweed the monarch cannot survive. Milkweed has been abundant enough to support the monarch population for thousands of years, but in the past 20 years something changed. Today the monarch population is down by 90 percent or more! Deforestation of the monarchs’ wintering grounds in Mexico is one issue, but the Mexican government has stepped up and is working to improve that problem. Climate change is another. We can’t do much about deforestation in Mexico or climate change, at least very quickly. But we can do something about the problem here in the US, which is habitat loss. In Indiana, our expansion of communities has contributed to habitat loss, but there is a far larger problem. Around 20 years ago a new product was introduced to farmers, commonly referred to as Roundup Ready crops. The use of Roundup Ready crops now accounts for about 98 percent of the crops planted in the Midwest. The use of roundup ready products increases crop yield which lowers prices and provides more food, which is great for all of us! But Roundup is also really, really good at killing milkweed, the only plant the monarch can lay its eggs on and feed their offspring. To save the monarchs, we need to create more habitat by planting milkweed in our parks, yards, alongside roads or anyplace that we can find. For more information on how you can get involved and start saving the monarch, visit our website at carmelclayparks.com. 19 | REGISTER ONLINE AT CARMELCLAYPARKS.COM

statement of accessibility Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) makes a good-faith effort to ensure all patrons, and the community at-large, are knowledgeable of the resources and opportunities available to them, which support full and active participation within CCPR’s parks, facilities, and programs. CCPR believes every individual has the right to participate in activities and programs that supports their physical, mental, social and emotional wellness, and therefore contribute to enhancing their overall quality of life. Based on this belief, and CCPR’s vision and mission, we are committed to the provision of services for individuals of all ages, skill and ability levels. This is achieved by identifying and removing barriers in order to serve individual and community needs, as well as to provide quality programs and services accessible to all; such as our many recreational, leisure and education-based programs, volunteer opportunities and interactive public events. CCPR is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act through making reasonable modifications as required by the ADA. Requests for modifications must be made through one of CCPR’s Inclusion Supervisors within 30 days of the start of the program of interest. CCPR will provide reasonable modifications as soon as possible after the commencement of the modification process. Specific criteria will be found on registration documentation. In addition, CCPR is dedicated to non-discrimination in the provision of programs, services and activities to the public. CCPR will continue to incorporate all consumer feedback, current research and practice knowledge in order to continue meeting and exceeding customer/community satisfaction and to protect and promote access for all for generations to come.
