Helpful Summer Tips for our Wonderful Volunteers:

• Stay hydrated • Dress appropriately in your volunteer T-shirt • Wear sunscreen & a hat if you’re volunteering outside • Remember to have fun!

We look forward to seeing you this summer, whether it be at our Events, Adaptive programs, Summer Camp Series, or in our parks!

Zachary Kline | Volunteer Supervisor 317.843.3868 zkline@carmelclayparks.com

LOUIS JOHNS | VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT “Camel Clay Parks & Recreation is a wonderful place to go! The staff are amazing and nice people! The volunteers

are so amazing and helpful with the patrons it’s crazy how much they love to help out just for fun! And the patrons here are so nice and so respectful you start to make friends right away! Another great aspect of CCPR is that they have zero tolerance! Which means that no child/adult will ever get bullied and if they do they will be handled according. So if you have a child/adult with disabilities, bring them down here and watch the happiness in their eyes! As a volunteer at CCPR I see this every time I volunteer and each time I see that fun and joy they’re having it makes me feel so happy and honored to volunteer here! So come on down to CCPR and have some fun, relax, and watch your family have a wonderful time they’ll won’t want to leave and they’ll be begging for you to take them back!”

Did You Know?

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation has the only Inclusive Playback troupe in the United States

What is Playback exactly? Playback is a form of improvisational theatre where audience members tell personal stories and the troupe of actors "play it back" on the spot. Our troupe includes both those with and without disabilities. Performance themes will be focused around community interests. Why did Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation decide to launch an Inclusive Playback troupe? "We believe that all individuals have stories to share that will impact their world," said Michelle Yadon, Inclusion Supervisor. I'm interested. When are the next auditions? Check back at carmelclayparks.com or email Michelle at myadon@carmelclayparks.com. A date is not yet set for 2015 auditions. We look for creative, supporting, caring, and spontaneous individuals. Previous experience in the disability field or acting is not required. How can you help? We are currently looking for funding and sponsors to offset the startup costs of this troupe. Interested parties should contact Lindsay at llabas@carmelclayparks.com.

OUR 3-TIERED FOCUS

Parks and recreation in Carmel and throughout the United States helps address some of our nation’s toughest challenges like obesity and environmental sustainability. Because parks serve as gateways to healthy, prosperous, and connected communities, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation has joined the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to promote NRPA’s Three Pillars of Conservation, Health and Wellness, and Social Equity. • Conservation - Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation plays

CONSERVATION

a critical role in providing and preserving open spaces throughout the community. In fact, 65% of the park system is preserved in a natural state. Carmel has the first park system in the state to be certified as wildlife friendly by the Indiana Wildlife Federation. Natural resource management plans have been developed for each park to create a viable and sustainable system for wildlife and their disappearing habitats.

• Health and Wellness - Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation

HEALTH & WELLNESS

helps contribute to the wellbeing of our residents by providing healthy and enjoyable outlets to remain active. With nearly 22 miles of park trails to the wide variety of fitness classes offered each year, we provide great opportunities to enhance quality of life. Based on a recent survey, one out of every two households in Carmel validated that parks and recreation improves health and wellness.

• Social Equity - Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation is dedicated

SOCIAL EQUITY

to providing an inclusive environment with opportunities for everyone to participate in our parks, programs, and services. Over 250 individuals of all ages and abilities are served annually through our adaptive and inclusion services, which help individuals with disabilities participate in our numerous recreation programs. Other programs, such as table tennis, badminton, and pickleball, are offered to appeal to Carmel’s increasingly diverse population.

BARK park off the leash

Our Bark Park will offer the above benefits and more. Throughout the multi-phase project, amenities are set to include roughly 2 acres in phase I (1.5 acres will open in phase II), fencing for large and small dogs, check-in area, shelter, waste and water stations, restrooms, water feature, and an agility and obstacle course. Pass & Grand Opening Celebration information is forthcoming. Please visit carmelclayparks.com/bark-park for project progress. Dog parks clearly have benefits for dogs, but did you know there are just as many, if not more, benefits for humans? Many of these benefits are aligned with connecting you to nature and improving your physical activity and health. While dog parks range in size and amenities, they all serve the same purpose - to provide a place where dogs can run freely off leash, and socialize with other dogs. This allows pet owners the opportunity to also maintain an active lifestyle and connect to nature. Dog parks allow you to be more sociable too. Sure, dogs get to sniff other dogs and alleviate social problems, but you get to form lasting relationships with other dog owners. Dog parks create a center of activity where friends, neighbors, and family can interact. Dog parks allow you to practice off-leash training with man’s best friend. Off-leash training is designed to provide focus and lengthen your dog’s attention span. It’s important to perform the trainings with distractions, such as at a dog park. Interested in becoming a Bark Park sponsor? Contact Lindsay at llabas@carmelclayparks.com to see how you can showcase your organization to the Carmel Clay community.

Did you know CCPR manages more than 500 acres of parkland, 12 parks, 4 greenways, and 21.7 miles of developed trails with total annual visitation estimated to be in the millions? Getting out in nature and playing definitely has its benefits. Today’s children are playing less than any previous generation, and this is causing a decrease in social skills, an increase in anxiety, obesity, and depression, and a lack of having fun in the outdoors. Play helps to build self-esteem, enhance creativity and imagination, grow relationships, and stay active. A vital and very essential component of Central Park, West Commons is the last big piece of the park to be completed! Anchored by a playground of extraordinary design, it soars 30 feet above ground while providing climbing features, slides, tunnels, platforms, and other play features that will engage people of all ages. The playground additionally incorporates a younger child area, seating, and shade structures along with a shelter. At night the magic truly begins as it transforms into a spectacular lighted sculpture. Also included are shelters for family and group get-togethers, restroom facilities, parking lot, new trails, nature elements, and of course, butterfly gardens nestled within the sculpted landscape. All these features work together to activate the west side of Central Park. Construction will start this summer with the initial development opening to the public in early 2016. Additional elements and a water spray feature may be added over the course of the next few years. As West Commons is developed it will help everyone stay active and have fun!
