Building a Greener
• FUTURE • A flourishing brick and mortar suburb like Carmel might not be the first place you’d expect to see big steps being made to build a greener future, but we have helped shape the city into an environmentally conscious community through sustainable park planning, conserving much of the natural habitat in the parks system, and educating members of the community about the wildlife around us. In 2010, Central Park became the first park in the state of Indiana to be certified by the Indiana Wildlife Federation as wildlife friendly. The rest of our parks followed suit, making us the only certified park system in the state. As a certified wildlife friendly parks system, we demonstrate on a daily basis our commitment to planning and building sustainable parks and preserving the native plant and animal species that exist and thrive right here in our own backyards. We look for ways to sustain and improve the environment in all of our day-to-day operations. In 2015, we became the seventh park and recreation agency in the country to win the National Recreation and Park Association’s Barb King Environmental Stewardship Award. This award highlights our educational nature-focused programs offered to members of the community. In addition to the many nature programs offered here in Carmel, park users can receive education about the native wildlife in our parks simply by taking a walk through them. Along the trails, park users will find educational and interpretive signage that we’ve placed at important spots along the way in order to help teach the community about all of the bustling habitats and animals that share this land with us. Alongside the City of Carmel, we will continue to take the paths necessary to ensure our native wildlife is able to survive and prosper. Just this past year, Carmel was recognized by the Indiana Audubon Society as an Indiana Bird Town. Our parks help meet the criteria required to be an Indiana Bird Town by providing lush natural habitats for native bird populations to live and grow.
Our park system helps ensure Carmel’s future by creating environmentally friendly and sustainable facilities, while also taking us back to our roots with green parks full of native wildlife just waiting to be appreciated for years to come. We hope you’ll join us in doing all we can to preserve and protect the environment so future generations can enjoy our parks the same way we do today. CALL 317.848.7275 FOR MORE INFORMATION | 21

BEST SUMMER EVER! Raise your hand if you went to summer camp. Ooop, caught ya! Do you remember the choreography to the dance you learned? How about the friendships you made along the way? For those of you that raised your hand you understand firsthand what the benefits of camp are for children. And for those of you that didn’t, let me enlighten you. At camp children learn to connect with nature, it provides them an avenue to learn social skills, it allows them to unplug from technology (Like!), they have the ability to grow independent, they can experience success, or become more confident, and they can spend time being active within both structured and unstructured play. Many parents are committed to sending their kids to camp. For some it’s the time away from technology. For others, it’s because both parents work. And for some it’s for the sheer point of getting their children out and social…and getting them tired so they sleep better at night, of course. We talked to a few parents and children within the Summer Camp Series and thought we’d pass on some of their favorite memories and insight of the program. Summer camp includes all things necessary to make it the best summer ever!
“I just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you all, Ms. Jones, and the rest of the counselors do all summer long. Jackson loves the camps and Miriam and I feel really good about sending Jackson. Thank you so much for everything this summer.” - Ron “We have seen a significant improvement in Sydney’s willingness to be accountable and a responsible person over the summer – and we attribute it to her experience with you.” - Mary Jane
“The Move to Improve camp this summer was so well run and coordinated. I was very impressed! I was grateful to hear all the stories of great coaching, encouragement and positive reinforcement that Brock would share when he came home.” - Kimberly
“I just wanted to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" for all the work and support the ESE team provided to the kids during this summer. Jacob's confidence in himself and his teamwork appear to have improved over the weeks and that is due to all the support the kids receive each day! ESE summer programs are great because of the facilitators and supervisory team members. Thank you again!” - Loree

Advocating for Inclusion THE WORD “INCLUSION” BY DEFINITION MEANS “AN ACT OF TAKING IN AS PART OF A WHOLE.” If you are familiar with our culture of inclusion, this definition should make perfect sense, as we embrace an inclusive environment. The truth is, we are very proud of all of our members, program participants, staff and volunteers – who come from all ages, levels, abilities, races, genders and religions. As a whole, we are a community of individuals who work together, dream together and grow together. Recently, we were awarded with the “Excellence in Inclusion Award” by the National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA). This honor recognizes and credits an agency that has embraced its mandate to implement inclusive processes and practices. The agency provides well-planned supports for inclusive participation by people with disabilities and diversity in all programs, services, and facilities. Further, the agency provides leadership to other agencies, shares information, and advocates for inclusive services and practices. We are truly humbled to have received this award and will continue to build upon our inclusive efforts and advocacy in spreading the word about social equity and inclusion. In March, we will once again celebrate Disability Awareness Month. During this month, we spotlight the individuals within our adaptive programs, which are designed specifically for individuals with disabilities. These programs are created to make sure that everyone can participate in a leisure activity of their choice that will allow for them to perform at their highest level. Adaptive programs are offered for kids, teens, and adults. We encourage you to participate in Disability Awareness Month with us. Join us on March 24 & 25 at 6pm and listen to monologues written by individuals with disabilities about love, family, friendship, and diversity and see our very own Roundabout Playback Troupe perform. Inclusion does not only benefit individuals with disabilities. It benefits everyone in the community. Each person, no matter their differences, has valuable skills to contribute. CCPR’s inclusive approach brings people from all walks of life together to accomplish their similar goals. It truly is a culture that helps every single person rise up and be the best that they can be.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF CARMEL CLAY PARKS & RECREATION During the 25-year history of Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR), our nationally accredited and National Gold Medal Award-winning park and recreation system has significantly impacted the quality of life in Carmel and Clay Township. As of August 2016, CCPR provided more than 3,100 different programs and classes during the past 12 months serving over 127,000 participants. The Monon Community Center averaged 12,426 members with pass and membership attendance eclipsing 618,000. From a statistically valid survey, we know that 71% of our residents use CCPR’s parks or services at least once per year. Based on these statistics, the impact CCPR has on residents and families in our community is hard to dispute Thanks to a recent analysis conducted by George Mason University, we now have validation of CCPR’s economic impact. Commissioned by the National Recreation and Park Association, CCPR was honored to be selected as one of 21 case study locations for this national research study. The results of this study, available at www.carmelclayparks.com, are truly eye opening. CCPR’s total operations and capital spending in 2013 generated over $39.3 million in economic activity within Indiana and supported 372 Hoosier jobs.

Your Input leads to our output Everyone likes to see shiny new equipment in their fitness center but you know what’s even better – having a say in the equipment that is purchased! In 2014, 2015, and 2016 Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation was slated to purchase new pieces of cardio equipment at the Monon Community Center to replace aging machines. In preparation for each of these purchase recommendations, two goals were set out by the staff:
1) increasing the variety of available equipment to meet the needs of more guests, and
2) bringing in several options for members to test out and then vote for their favorites.
In 2014, we conducted a treadmill demo where guests could try out 5 different kinds of treadmills for two weeks. They then voted on their favorites and 3 were chosen and placed in the Fitness Center just 2 months later.
It takes a lot more time, effort, and resources to set up the equipment demonstrations than it does to just decide on new equipment and purchase it. Was it worth it? Absolutely! During each of the demo periods, members expressed appreciation that their opinions were truly valued by MCC management and in the end, both goals were met. The MCC Fitness Center replaced one type of aging elliptical and one type of aging treadmill with state of the art spin bikes, ellipticals, lateral machines, stair climbers, and three very different types of treadmills. Now we have something for everyone! Equally as exciting as improved variety, is the fact that we knew our members would love the new equipment because they selected it. Clearly, listening to our guests is important to us! If you have ideas on improving our fitness center, email us at info@carmeclayparks.com or submit your feedback through our HappiFeet-Carmel Clay app (available for download in your smart phone's app store).
