Biography
Biography About me
I am a 34-yr-old Spaniard currently based on Valencia (Spain), where I work remotely in the topic of water resiliency and sustainable urban planning for the Toyota Foundation of Brazil and Fluxus Ecological Design entities. Fluent in English and Portuguese, native in Spanish and Catalan and intermediate in French. I am PhD in Environmental Science & Urban Planning (2018) from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), Bachelor and Master’s studies in Architecture & Urban Planning at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), and European Masters in Urbanism (EMU Program), focused on City, Territory & Sustainable Development, taught in English by staff and at the facilities of the Polytechnic University of Catalunya (UPC), Università di Venezia (IUAV) and the Katholiek Universiteit of Leuven (KU-Leuven). I am passionate of my work. I have worked as a consultant in sustainable water management, urban and regional planning, spatial planning, mobility and accessibility, landscape architecture and architecture with engineering companies (Engecorps, Fluxus Ecological Design, Geométrica, Typsa), studios (JDVDP, Arquitetura Rural), foundations (Toyota Foundation of Brazil, FCTH, Cornell Atkinson Center), NGOs (Aguas Claras do Rio Pinheiros) and research groups (Cornell LA Department, GITECO-UC, University of São Paulo, University of Campinas, Economy Group University of Valencia).
Currently, I aim to continue working and expanding knowledge on sustainable urban planning, water-related nature-based solutions and urban design, addressing risks associated with contamination, flooding, lack of sanitation infrastructure, erosion, impermeabilization, landslide, fluvial ecosystem degradation, road safety, public space and accessibility in the contexts of degraded and vulnerable urban environments while providing social well-being. To do that, I collaborate with foundations, companies, research groups, governments and citizens in supporting urban planning processes, designing soft landscape strategies, problem solving of land-use zoning and building regulations, and the dissemination of knowledge in sustainable water management and resilient and inclusive cities. In my free time, I love meeting people from other countries and share our different points of view and experiences, while doing so, I try to learn and improve my language skills. I also love to be in contact with nature, to practice different sports regularly, such as swimming, playing volleyball, climbing and yoga, and to spend some time playing the piano.

Climate Change Mitigation & Green Infrastructure in São Paolo
The Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP), located at the headwaters of the Tietê River, in Southeast Brazil, is today home to more than 20 million inhabitants. As a result of the urbanization process, most of the tributary streams of the Tietê and Pinheiros River have been channeled and covered, making them part of the underground storm drain. New avenues were constructed over the original stream channels once they were covered to enhance the expansion of the city. The Research Climate Change Mitigation & Green Infrastructure in São Paolo was funded by FAPESP foundation and developed within the Greenlab at the USP to develop spatial analysis of environmental and urban components and recommend spatial interventions based on the integration of Green Infrastructure. During the PhD, participated in the lab team research to assess and understand key urban resiliency aspects of the city and individually developed an analysis and resilience action scenario. Analyzed geo-morphological, hydrological and topographical aspects together with urban land-use and building layout information for assessing vulnerability and priority water challenges across a variety of urbanized watersheds of the city, comparing periphery to consolidated areas. Undertook a detailed evaluation of the environmental impacts on hydrology, particularly, those associated with the changes induced by urban land-use, such as the downstream flood risk and the introduction of diffuse contamination into stormwater runoff.
Some BMPs, including Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), were recommended for the spatial intervention in some streets, enhancing water retention and infiltration. Some of these actions were proposed together with strategic interventions for traffic calming, encouraging safer and more inclusive urban environments. Conceptual drawing for new blue-green corridors, a tramway line and bicycle lanes along a North-South axis of the city.

Green Infrastructure on the USP Campus
From 15th to 22nd of September, a workshop developed by LABVERDE Research Group entitled "Green Infrastructure for the Campus ButantĂŁ of USP" took place at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of SĂŁo Paulo, in Brazil. The objective was to gather professors, students, researchers and technicians to concentrate efforts for implementing Green Infrastructure devices for the retrofitting of the university's open spaces. This Workshop formed part of the 2 projects of LABVERDE Research Group, approved in 2013 by the Superintendence of Environmental Management (SGA) of USP. Participated in the brainstorming process of the project, including the identification of main challenges and spatial intervention opportunities within the area. After the workshop, co-edited a green infrastructure brochure based on this prior experience.

Constructed Wetlands for Watershed Restoration in SĂŁo Paolo
During the research at Cornell University, in close collaboration with Dr. Thomas Whitlow and the Biological and Environmental Engineering Department, engaged in research on constructed wetland efficiency as a base-flow contaminant control system projected along local streams of Sao Paolo. Urban growth in the Sao Paolo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) caused the degradation of local waters. Adequate wastewater infrastructure has been slowly introduced, but water quality is compromised by uncontrolled sewage discharge from new informal settlements as well as the diffuse contaminant loads from built-up areas. State-level organizations work together with researchers from the University of SĂŁo Paulo, to restore some fluvial landscapes of the periphery of the city.
This research is integrated with one of these initiatives: the JaguarĂŠ Watershed Restoration Pilot Program, aiming at evaluating the efficiency of Green Infrastructure Technologies (GIT), vegetated systems that recover natural functions, for reducing in-stream water contamination in this humid sub-tropical climate. A Horizontal Sub-Surface Flow (HSSF) Constructed Wetland is proposed to reduce organic matter in-stream using the First-order Degradation Model K-C*.
02
Research on Green Infrastructure in Maryland
Montgomery County Green Infrastructure projects are regulated by the federal government through permit processes on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The stormwater generated within Montgomery County urban area drains to local streams. They are part of a larger watershed system that leads to rivers such as the Potomac River, and, eventually, Chesapeake Bay. During the summer of 2017, travelled with Dr. Thomas Whitlow to Maryland DC to collect data from current green infrastructure projects for rainwater runoff contaminant load reductions versus water retention and infiltration.
03
Stormwater Management in Monsoon Climates
During the second half of 2017, helped to draft a proposal focused on sustainable stormwater management in humid tropical cities. In humid tropical weather, cities expect severe changes in rainfalls causing major risks of flooding and droughts due to Climate Change. Humid tropical city wet season rainfalls in these geographical areas will increase in intensity and frequency, translating into flooding occurring more than usual. As an example, the rainfall in HaNoi City (HNC) in Vietnam during the wet season is expected to rise by 20% whereas in the dry season it is expected to decrease by 40% from 2010 to 2100.

Water Safety in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range
Discussion of current challenges for the continued maintenance of ecosystem services, especially the provision of water in tropical rainforests, which is essential for the sustainable future of many metropolitan areas, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. We seek innovative and effective action plans based on current knowledge provided by LID and Green Infrastructure experts and biologists. Since 2017, the Toyota Foundation of Brazil and the Agribusiness Research Foundation - FUNDEPAG, with local municipalities, have been implementing a biodiversity survey through a large number of inter-basin mountains for land use guidelines. The world’s eight irreplaceable protected areas for biodiversity conservation are also host to large mineral water reserves. By assembling data from conservation biologists, engineers and urban hydrologists, LIDs are designed for an Action Plan for water security along the gradient of Human-Altered Landscapes.
