BACKGROUND
WE SIT MORE THAN WE SLEEP.
Today, the average fulltime office desk worker can work for up to 9.3 hours a day, even more than we sleeping.
ACTIVE OFFIC E
Around 86% of workers in U.S. sit all day at work. Over the past half century, with the increasing number of office jobs, people’s sedentary time has increased dramatically, more people are getting jobs where they are sitting.
ZONGL AN LUO

Sedentary behaviour refers to any waking activity characterized by an energy expenditure ≤ 1.5 metabolic equivalents and a sitting or reclining posture. In general this means that any time a person is sitting or lying down, they are engaging in sedentary behaviour. Common sedentary behaviours include TV viewing, video game playing, computer use (collective termed “screen time”), driving automobiles, and reading.
WORK MORE TO PERFORM BETTER?
ZONGL AN LUO INTRODUCTION
Occupational health physician Dr Abed Onn has listed low back pain as one of the three most common work-related ailments, alongside noise-induced loss of hearing and upper limb muscular disorder, Star Online reported.
M FA TH ESIS P ROJ ECT
Sitting down for long-hours causes back aches, which hamper workplace productivity, researchers say.
ACTIVE OFFIC E
This sedentary office life won’t make people perform better. On the other hand, it will make them less productive, and leave them at higher risk for health issues.
How it relate to me? In my past lives, I really sat a lot. I sat above 10 hours a day for 8 years due to my graphic design major. I didn’t notice this is a problem until the back of my shoulder felt painful. One time I went to saw the chinese medicine, the doctor told me it’s because of my sedentary lifestyle. My professor, who is also a graphic designer, he told me this problem happened to designers normally. Spondylitis, lumbar illness, periarthritis are three occupational diseases for designers. My peers also got this kind of neck or back problems. I started to research what other issues a sedentary lifestyle can brings. The results shock me. Sitting above 8 hours is not a small thing if it occupies most of the time in our half-lives. I realized that people cannot take it so normally and carelessly. Although we cannot avoid the long day computer works, this problem still needs a solution. I believe it’s not just a problem for graphic designers. Any full-time desk office workers face this issue. As a graphic designer, I want to find the answer.

RESE ARC H
The Problem The human body has 700 skeletal muscles and over 360 joints that are build to move. When you are sitting, your blood cannot circulate properly, which means your brains are deprived of oxygen, so you are less productive. Moreover, when you sit long periods of time, your bodies burn less fat, and reduce the insulin’s ability to uptake glucose, so it will increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and cardiovascular issues. Remaining sitting in a position with poor posture can lead to back and neck problem.

INTRODUCTION
Design Opportunities There are organizations and standing desk companies to encourage people to stand up, and several products to remind people to move when they sit for long time, but there still need an organizable informative project to concern office desk worker about their health. Active Office is not just a project to encourage people exercise more. We are daily health cares for office lives. Active Office reminds people to have a good sitting posture to work, provides easy ways to exercise in office, encourages people to work ergonomically, and try to create a healthy flourishing office lives than traditional sedentary office lives.

Connection Map To address this big issue, I draw a connection map to find sedentary lifestyle’s influence on health, personal, environment, economic, culture and politic. Through this way, I can find more possibilities and design gaps when I tackle this problem. Finally, the map generated 18 words which give ideas and directions for this project.

Stand Up For Yourself Event To dig deeper insight into my thesis, which is encouraging office desk workers to do moderate exercises in their office, I created an event and invite few office workers to discuss the topic. Invitation, event planning guide, report, survey were created for guests. There are ten people joined this event. Some of them are program developers, some of them are designers. Each person filled out the survey, and we had a free talk after that. There are some important insights were found in the event: 1. People said they are too busy to take a stand is because they don’t care what sitting will bring. 2. Most people focus on how to sit comfortable instead of how to sit healthy. 3. Sedentary lifestyle is not about equipments. It’s about behavior. 4. People see work much more important than sitting less.

Sedentary Lifestyle Surveys The survey basically asked respondents how’s their work days and what will make them to make a change. Through the survey, it gave me a chance to touch my audience. Also, it gave me a guide on which direction my solution could go.

Employers have no time to set a exercise plan for their employees. Exercise topics people want to share with people are various, they all share things they are interested in and things they want to know. 30% of people are not sure whether data can make them feel encouraged. 90% of people think their posture are slouchy, and all of them want to make a change. 50% of people uses exercise app. Most of them use it to running or different muscle group to work on. Another possibility is us clipper to represent office, and make the shape to create letter “A”.

I drawed some initial logo ideas on the sketch book. My ideas are most about combine the shape of letter “A” and letter “O”, or use box to represent the office, and add a lively element (curved line) to the box.
Then I choose some sketches with potential to came out with digital sketches for Active Office. I found that a lively curved line can represent many things— letter’s shape and healthy. Finally I made my choice.

App Process
I draw some rough mockup drafts for the app design when I start to do it, and then I launched the first round of user testing. There are three target audiences helped me to do this. They gave me some ideas after they roughly went through the user flows. 1. They want to have an option to show their planning guide in consideration of privacy. 2. They don’t want just see partner pages, they want communicate with people, follow some friends. 3. People don’t want to show their age especially women.

After the draft, I did a digital version of the mockups. Based on this mockup, I started to explore the visual style of the app. Then I started the second round user testing.
In this round of user testing, there were some new feedback from my audience. 1. Office people are tired of blue color. Blue is a business color. I may avoid use it massively. 2. For the partner part, I can add more interactive part for office workers and their partners. 3. The frames make the screen too narrow, looks very crowded. 4. The gradient color make audiences hard to see the contents. 5. When people reached their milestones, it’s better to have a reward system to encourage them. 6. Avoid negative icons. Making icons positively.

Because all of these items are in the box, so I decided to make the packaging simple and clear, and easy to recognized.

Making the visual system cohesive is an essential part. Active Office is a brand, the rebranding job will enhance the emotional power, so it arouse people’s interest to do it.
M FA TH ESIS P ROJ ECT
I did some initial touch to the Active Office Kit. For the rebranding part, I think the most important thing is to tell people what this fitness equipment is, then my app will tell you how to do.
For the posters, firstly I want to combine photos and simple illustrations to show the ideas. After rounds of critics, people think it will take them few minutes to understand the meaning without see the words. The layout is a mess too. People cannot find a focus point on posters, so it didn’t have power. The words are long, so it also lose power too.
ACTIVE OFFIC E
ZONGL AN LUO M FA TH ESIS P ROJ ECT
ACTIVE OFFIC E
In the first round of critics for the website, many people think the design is not inspiring. It’s about active office, but the website is tedious. It make me went back to think about how to design a page to lead people download the app or get the kit. The page should have some word to guide them. The blunt cut of the header and page is not “active”. The main word is hard to arouse people’s interest.
