Dog House II Biker Appreciation March 24th ,2012

Finally the Saturday rolled around and time for the ride over to the new Dog House II. The skys threatened rain as we pulled off I-20 onto Hwy #1 in West Columbia, past the fleemarket and there to the left is a lot filled with bikes, we made it in before the bottom fell out. The Dog House II has a flat paved lot, large deck and big windows ideal for a biker bar. Add a welcoming staff, good food and cold beer...could it be any better?!? This new watering hole is sure to be a favorite for South Carolina riders offering all the ABC permits, lunch specials, and late night menu. Thanks Leisa & the

DH2 crew!! We love this bar.... RubyRed

Chrome Nuts & Bolts

NC/SC BORDER REDEFINED Relatively small errors by surveyors using stakes, hatchets and mental arithmetic 240 years ago began before the USA was even a country. Modern-day surveyors, using computers and GPS systems, redrew the border to narrow it down to the centimeter. Their results put the new line about 150 feet south of the old one. But for the owners of 93 properties who suddenly find themselves in another state, it’s a bureaucratic nightmare. One resident is aggravated about the change, but is resigned to it. But the government can’t make the Clemson fan happy about it.“I was born a sandlapper and I want to remain a sandlapper,” Langley wrote to the commission. “And there is no way in hell I am rooting for the Tar Heels.” NEW CHROME CONTRIBUTORS We’re very happy to announce Perry as our new sports bike editior. You asked for it...here it is.Sheck out Rollin With Da Don every month for the latest local and national news. CHESTER COUNTY SHOUT OUT We all hear so much negative about our local government and what they aren’t doing. I wanted to drop you a line and share something Positive!! I live in a rural area in Chester county on a quiet back road, the kind we love to ride on. Chester county came out and put gravel on the shoulder of the road where Lyle road ends at Millen Road. I’ve been fussing about the hazard the last couple days as the gravel has gotten into the road way when people cut the turn too sharp. My concern was someone not knowing the gravel was there and going down on a motorcycle because they wouldn’t see it making a right turn till it was too late!!! Well yesterday I decided to Stop Bitching and Do Something, so I Page 28

called SC DOT in Chester and was told to call Chester Maintenance. When I called I explained the hazard the Gravel posed to a biker, and asked that someone come take care of it. By the end of the day Chester County had sent out a crew to Clean it up. I wanted local bikers to know it’s our Responsibility, when we see a hazard to take time to report it. We have The Power to Protect our Brothers and Sisters in the Wind. Sincerely your Sister Mary Horn aka Rose Lady You think you know them That girl you called a slut in class today. She’s a virgin. The pregnant girl walking down the street . She got raped . The boy you called lame. He has to work every night to support his family. That girl you pushed down the other day. She’s already being abused at home. That girl you called fat. She’s starving herself. The old man you made fun of cause of the ugly scars. He fought for our country. The boy you made fun of for crying. His mother is dying. You think you know them.

“CONTROVERSY STILL SWIRLS AROUND SAUSAGE QUEEN” At last weekend’s Southern Invitational Sausage Fest. claims of bribery, discrimination, and influence pedaling still cloud the crowning of mustard faced Miss Elizabeth, Thelma Lou, resident of a neighboring community outside Mount Pilot, states, “Elizabeth’s technique was effective but crude, I should have won on style points alone!” She also believes that discrimination was involved, as her boyfriend was former law enforcement in Mayberry, while accusations of bribery are under investigation, judges Scalia, Ginsburg, and Sotomayor stand by their coronation of Elizabeth Hunt, Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

“SCANDAL ROCKS THE THRONE” Nascar driver, and Ball Park CEO Lance Drippings called an emergency press conference amidst rumors of bribery, and discrimination. calling it “sausagegate”, as new allegations have arisen. Mr Drippings called for an immediate abdication of the crown and went on to state that, “While Miss Hunt seems to have won the contest, there are other issues involved here, apparently this fetching young southern grandmother has absolutely no culinary skills at all, and since our motto is, THEY PLUMP WHEN YOU COOK EM, we feel it would be a travesty to have this woman represent us. On a side note; Mayor Junie White, who was suppose to present Miss Hunt with the ceremonial meat scepter at this weekends official coronation, only had this to say, “WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FATBACK CHILD!”

Conversion __________ There are many reasons for converting a Sportster from an 883cc to a 1200cc. Some riders start on an 883 and want more power as they get into riding, and some find a great deal on an 883 but wanted a 1200 to start with. It’s simple to just bolt on a 1200 top end, but just finding a top end in good condition can be difficult. Buying a new top end from the dealer can be expensive. Stock 1200 pistons can be installed in 883 cylinders by boring the cylinders over, however stock 883 heads will not work on this setup. Because of the difference in head/valve design between the 883 & 1200, the stock 883 heads would require a lot of machine work. This

puts the machine work back out with a higher speed & into the expensive range. better throttle response at higher speed. An easy & cost effective way to convert, is to use Most conversions we do a “reverse dome” piston here in the shop using the set. These pistons are “reverse dome” setup come in designed to convert an 883 around the $800 range. That to 1200 and retain the stock includes parts, tax & labor. 883 heads without any modifications to the heads. Keep the wrenches spin’n When converting with these & the sparks a fly’n. Later pistons, more material will Mojo need to be removed from Here at the 883 cylinders than a The Original Billski Mods, Inc. typical oversize boring in Rock Hill, SC stop in to shop for job. This means that the specials on leathers & accessories, cylinder boring costs will custom parts/service/repair, and usually double per hole, much more. One great advantage a conversion has over a stock 1200 is on bottom end torque. This is due to the larger bore with the stock 883 head design & valve configuration. Usually a conversion will take a factory 1200 light to light. A factory 1200 will top Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

Jesus caught his fish, then he cleaned them. Well Howdy Folks, Man aint the weather just been super, we skipped right past Spring and straight into Summer. The weather has been just crazy this year but ya know with this time of the year Spring or not you can’t forget Easter. All the beautiful bright colors, children hiding eggs, and all their new clothes, oh yeah and the candy can’t forget the candy man. Ya know sitting here thinking on Easter and what it means to me. Yes I love all the material things about Easter and it all ways means riding season is here, But to me Easter means that I can be forgiven, that I have an advocate with the Father, that I have something to look forward to, and most of all I have a Risen Savior. So what does Easter mean to you? Ya know it can mean the same to you as it does to me, When we think of Easter we think of hiding eggs with the kiddos. Well what are we hiding from the Father, ya know we are His kiddos, are they things that we really don’t think anyone knows maybe folks do know it kinda in secret, well it might just be that everyone knows it but God, well relax if you can! He all ready knows it listen I don’t know if folks really realize just how close we are to the end times. Folks because of Easter and a risen Savior we can be ready for the end times when and it is gonna happen. They crucified Page 42

Jesus Christ for our sins and placed His body in a tomb, but on the third day He arose and when He did that sat In The Wind With Christ, Grace free for you and me, Rev. Cotton Pate that changed the Chrome Crew [803] 475-9165 whole outlook on being a Christian this simply means that His Mercy and His Grace are there for the taking. So check this out we get a new ride (bike) can’t wait to show it off, well why not a new life and trust me you will be excited about showing it off. It’s kinda like being a biker ya know, Bikers are loyal, true, dependable to one another, and this is the same thing with Christ man, He will be the most trustworthy and loyal, dependable Friend you have ever had. Never have i tried in my writings to scare no one into salvation for salvation is free, but check this out, How many Brothers and Sisters a year do we lose man. And I’m not saying they weren’t where they needed to be with God that’s not up to me, but wouldn’t you want to know for sure that things are good between you and God. Listen folks riding season is here so please be careful, watch out for the ones that don’t watch out for you, And till next time remember that there is one that will forever ride with you Jesus Christ Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

aster comes at the most beautiful time of the year… unless you have allergies! The grass is turning green, new leaves are coming back and blossoms are everywhere! Carolina blue sky, warming temperatures and the rumble of bikes in the air! Spring has sprung! Signs of new life are everywhere! Is it any wonder that God would choose this time of year to bring us the Easter Season! Chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs aside, (while I always enjoy them!) There is a deeper reason for the season. Christians everywhere celebrate Easter as the most Holy of all Christian holidays. Jesus was crucified, died and buried on Good Friday… and gloriously, miraculously, supernaturally rose from the dead on Easter Sunday! Christians celebrate that miracle of Christ’s resurrection as the single greatest miracle of all, giving proof and evidence that Jesus was who He said He was… the Son of God! We believe in Him, love Him and follow Him because of His resurrection from the dead! He lives! He IS alive and lives in the hearts and minds of those who trust in Him as their Lord and Savior! And just as Jesus died and rose to live again… The bible teaches that we who are tired of the old way of living can ask Jesus into our hearts and lives and we too can die to the old ways and be risen to walk in newness of life! Resurrection life is for ALL who believe! Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. There is no better time to give your life to Jesus! Make this Easter Season one to remember! Happy Easter and God Bless you all! Woman to Woman At 4:30 on March 19,2012 after a ride to Caesar’s Head State Park in SC, we were getting ready to head back home. The Bike was in first gear, I turned on the ignition switch and pulled in the clutch and was ready to push the start button when I noticed smoke rising from around the ignition switch. As I was sitting there looking at the smoke rise from the switch I felt something on my lower leg, looked down and fire was shooting from the right side of the bike. I jumped off, the kickstand was still down and ran away from the bike because I feared the gas tank would blow. My sister had her bike parked about 10 feet from me. She jumped off her bike and ran also...I watched in horror as within 30 seconds of getting off my bike it was entirely engulfed in flames. When the fire reached the starter button on the handlebar, Romeo started moving and made 4 complete circles on the kickstand, each circle brought Romeo closer and closer to my sister’s bike...The right gas cap blew off about 20 feet in the air and we could hear the gas in the tank igniting as the flames shot high into the air. He slowly came to a stop, missing Skippy’s bike by a few feet and the fire truck arrived and sprayed the bike down with foam..about 4 hours later the wrecker was towing Romeo to Anderson, he noticed smoke and a light coming from the back of the tow truck. Romeo had reignited and was on fire again on the back of the tow truck and the back left tail light was on.The tow truck driver called the fire dept and Romeo’s fire was put out a 2nd time...this time the fire dept cut the battery cable, and he brought Romeo home.

Romeo was a beautiful, grand old machine, the red shovelhead answer to my dreams. Many a mile we rode together, from dawn to dusk, in all kinds of weather. The roar of his engine, and the feel of the wind, ... drew me back to him, over and over again. Through laughter and tears, good times and bad, when we rode together, I was free, never sad. Because of him, I’ve seen sights I would never have seen, from the mountains to the ocean, and all in between. From Spring to Summer, through Winter and Fall, we flew down the highways, not a care at all. In his last moments, in a full blaze of glory, there came a sad end to my Romeo’s story. As long as I live, I shall never forget, the special bond that I had with him, we stuck together through thick and thin. Wildfire and Romeo, beloved friends to the end.....♥ Page~Wildfire~ 44

History Truths WAR BETWEEN THE STATES

JUST A LITTLE SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORY. IN THE 1930’s SOUTHERN COTTON MILL WORKERS (WE’RE ALL KIN TO THEM) WERE STRIKING OVER HORRIBLE WORKING CONDITIONS AND WAGES. GOVERNOR BLACKWOOD (SC) GAVE THE ORDER TO SHOOT AND KILL ANY STRIKERS. THIS CAME TO A HEAD ON 6 SEPT 1934, IN HONEA PATH, SC, WHERE AUTHORITIES OPENED FIRE KILLING SIX AND WOUNDING 20. WHY IS IT WE NEVER HEAR OF THIS, ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF PEOPLE KILLED IN THIS STATE.

Progressive Int’l Motorcycle Show

As the International Motorcycle Show came to Charlotte, crowds packed the Charlotte convention center for a 3 day celebration of everything “motorcycle”. Venders, parts suppliers, technicians, and artists showed there wears and talents during this three day event. Held February 24th through the 26th, this was the first time the event was held in Charlotte NC. For years this major event was held in Atlanta Ga., then for few years in Greenville SC. The move to Charlotte is a welcome one (at least for me) as I love the downtown area. The venue is spacious and you are within walking distance from several restaurants, and the NASCAR hall of fame. Parking wasn’t a problem as several parking garages in the area charge just five bucks for an all-day spot, and they do accommodate bikers. If you have any interest in two wheel machines this event is for you. Progressive insurance sponsored the event, and had a very nice display with a helpful staff all dressed like “Flo” from the popular TV commercial. Every major brand was represented (and some minor ones too). The IMS is a must see

for the motorcycle enthusiast, with experts on hand to discuss your needs or just chat about their products. I spent several minutes with the suspension specialist from Olin’s, who was very help full and informative on his products and the needs of a motorcycle’s suspension in general. S&S were also on hand and helpful, as my new Road King needs a high flow air filter and he had just the ticket. We were able to compare different products and options with a hands on look at

clamped down on a treadmill used to train a someone who has never ridden on how to shift and go through the gears. It was amusing to watch on many levels. A red carpet bike show down the center of the show rounded out

the event with local bike builders and painters showing off their stuff. Show bikes ranged from the traditional chopper to the radical front wheel drive rear wheel steer monument to engineering we saw parked at one end of the red carpet. If new bikes aren’t you thing, vintage HD and vintage metric bikes were also on hand giving the event a well-rounded flavor. I did not see my friends from MOTUS. I was hoping for an update on their production plans for the new American brand, but since they didn’t attend the event this year, I will check on them in the next few weeks and get an update on that four cylinder monster, be looking for that article in an upcoming issue of Carolina Chrome. The International Motorcycle Show is one of my winter “must do’s” and looks like it will be for some time..

the item I would later purchase. That kind of product exposure is important in this day of internet purchasing and catalog ordering as you can see what you’re getting before you order, with and have someone there to answer your Ride Safe -Cruiser questions and concerns. Guest speakers and seminars were also on hand including my favorite “how to pick up an motorcycle” provided by the Harley Davidson Crew. Also provided by HD was a Fatboy on a treadmill….. Wait for it… No not me exercising, but an actual HD Fatboy www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com

On January 3, George Whitmire was awakend by his Dachshund, Chloe. When he got up to see what was wrong, he realized his house was on fire. The only thing he got out of his burning home was the little dog that saved his life...he lost everything! Helmet Safety: Keeping Your Brain Safe

By Lil Bit Helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders and 41 percent for motorcycle passengers. Nearly half (48 percent) of the motorcycle accident-related deaths in 2010 were caused when drivers or passengers didn’t wear helmets. In efforts to raise motorcycle safety awareness regarding helmet use, Trayci Stephenson from Thunder Tower, in conjunction with Danny Grant from the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, offered a presentation to soldiers and civilian workers discussing the importance of riding with a helmet, how to choose the right helmet, proper fitting, DOT requirements, styles, and how to be safe on the road. They also suggested replacing the helmet after any type of impact small or large. The presentation was a thorough one with detailed insight of the benefits of riding with a helmet and consequences that may arise from not wearing one. However, ultimately, the choice is yours to ride with or without one. Afterwards, the rider’s bikes were inspected and they went on a lunch ride (with their helmets on) as part of their quarterly mentorship ride. Ride safe all!

Finding Foxy By: Marli, Santee Chrome Crew I don’t get paid to ride my motorcycle, so like most folks, I also have a day job, gotta keep gas in the scoot. After chatting with RubyRed one afternoon and sharing a little about my work (w/ Columbia Animal Shelter), she asked if I would put together a few quick tips, facts, etc. for each issue about the world of animal care and control and caring for our pets. So, here we go...... #6 Having a pet get lost is never a fun ordeal. Worrying if it is okay, is it hurt, frightened, etc. Hoping that at least until you can find your pet it is safe or even being taken care of by a kind person. Just knowing where to look can be a challenge. Here are some tips that can help you and your pet. Start by visiting your local animal shelter right away. If they don’t have your pet, keep checking with them every two three days minimum. Between visits get signs posted in the area your pet went missing. And of course ask people in the area if they have seen your pet. Having a picture available is also helpful. Be sure to ask the neighborhood children too. Kids

can be very observant and most are drawn to animals, so they notice them. Also ask the local mail carrier. They are in the area every day and likely have a good feel about who and what is coming and going. Check the local paper too. Often you will find listings for lost and found pets. These are just a few tips to help get you started. And don’t give up. Persistence can pay off. Here is such a story. We had a man come in looking for his Eskimo Spitz named Foxy. Sadly she wasn’t in our facility, so he continued to return and look on a regular basis. He brought us pictures in case one came in so we could do a comparison. Not being a breed we saw often, it reached a point that anytime we received a Spitz we were hopeful it might be Foxy. It wasn’t and the search continued, stretching into weeks, months and finally more than a year. Foxy’s owner never gave up and returned on his regular schedule to look each week. It was about a year and a half later when a scraggly female Spitz came in. She had been found as a stray by one of our Animal

Control Officers. Wow we thought, wouldn’t it be something if this was Foxy. We grabbed the pictures, that we were all too familiar with now, and did a comparison. We were a little doubtful – Foxy was a beautiful, well groomed healthy looking dog in her pictures. This dog in our shelter was a bit rough looking, pretty thin, but sweet and loveable and seemed to be the right size. We all agreed, you just never know, lets call Foxy’s owner. We did and he came right out. When he came in our front door we had this little dog waiting, our fingers crossed. Foxy’s owner stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her. As rough as she looked, there was no doubt in his mind, or this dog’s. It was Foxy and at the sound of her name wriggled free and ran straight for her Daddy. He sat on a bench in our lobby with Foxy in his lap, licking his face in shear delight. With her Dad now crying for joy, so was our entire lobby. It was one of those days we will never forget. A very happy reunion. So, if you have lost a pet. Don’t give up looking and stay in touch with your local animal shelter and animal control.

Blackberry Smoke!!! Dave and I braved the crowds once again in Five Points in Columbia for the St Pattys Festival. It was a beautiful day and the news said around 40,000 people and I can believe that , it was elbow to elbow looking like a green sea . My main goal going this year was to see Blackberry Smoke and I did, these guys played some good ole southern rock music. I have a special on TV recorded of Blackberry Smoke and my 1 1/2 year old granddaughter stands in front of the TV and pretends to play a guitar and moves that head back and forth to the beat. Pretty good when one that young likes you! They had folks at the festival up and moving . We have seen them at a Kid Rock concert and they were the pre show party for the Rock legends Cruise that we went on, always enjoy hearing them. Can’t wait to see you again. Dear Dr. DILLIGAF

ARTICLE CONTAINS CONTENT THAT MAY BE OBJECTIONABLE

Dear Dr. Dilligaf, Can you or somebody anybody tell these old school dicks to just shut the hell up. So what. I’ve not been riding but 4 years I ride every day, rain, cold, hot, I love the lifestyle. Got my bike the hard way I worked for it, saved and earned it. I have never kick started a motorcycle, wish I had but this is today not BACK IN THE DAY. Does that make me lesser of a man? I’m sick to damned death of all this back in the day, back in the day…. way back then, way back when. Well hell I guess they walked 10 miles to the school bus stop, uphill both ways, in the snow barefooted and they didn’t have a TV with a remote. HD has not produced a motorcycle with a kick start in how long, since 1985. Be fortunate you had that experience. And I love chrome, it may not get you home unless you’re welcome everywhere you go then you are HOME. Somebody needs to knock their loud mouths out, but it better not be me and that’s a direct quote from a York County Magistrate. Tim/Tega Cay, SC Dear Tim, In all my years of riding, some of the best times were spent on the side of the road. The “kick start”generation of bikers were around at a time when every biker in town knew each other because they had either given or borrowed tools,a tow, or a couch to each other at some point. When you saw someone on the side of the road you pulled over. Someone went for beer and someone went for parts. Depending on who got back first decided the arrival time to the party and by the time the bike was”kick started” back to life a bond was made. The next time one of these REAL bikers thinks enough of you to give you advise Abbott your biker, your attitude, or the weather I suggest you shut up and listen. If you don’t know where you come from, how can you have a clue about where your going? Dear. Dr. Dilligaf, We have my bike so low it drags the ground when I hit a speed bump I’m breaking kickstand springs all the time. Thankfully they’re inexpensive so I secure my kickstand with a bungee cord. I’m short, my bike’s hideous and I know it but it’s my bike and I am just learning. I’m not a big girl so it must be lowered with the shocks (I’m told). This mean girl started making fun of my motorcycle when I rode up in front of 100 riders at least. Everybody had a Page 62

I F YO U A R E E A S I LY O F F E N D E D T U R N T H E PA G E N O W good laugh. It hurt me real bad Doc I’m not going to lie. So many riders are supportive of new riders and we appreciate it. I talked to Rubyred before I left the Kickstand she told me to forget her nobody was born on a bike, and that crack head didn’t even have a bike. At least I ride and I am trying, even if I ride an ugly bike. I cried all the way home but not in front of her. When I learn and get more skilled I will get a better bike but not until I learn. Baby Girl/Camden, SC Baby girl, I once saw a midget riding down the road on a full dressed Electra Glide. I rode beside him until w came to a red light just so I could see how he was going to stop that thing. When he approached the light he literally jumped off the bike and held it up, when the light turned he jumped back on it and took off while I looked on in amazement. Being short and looking ugly just doesn’t matter and what you ride is your choice. Remember, everyone has an opinion until someone gets hit in the mouth. Dear Doc, My pet peeve doc and I’m thinking many share my feelings. While standing in line at a KFC in Greenwood SC a few weeks back, Chrome magazine in hand, ready to eat & look at the picks, I always know somebody, then read your column, I am a big fan by the way so are all the people at my insurance office. Some big boned corn-fed sucker says what’s that book, I showed him, he said ‘my wife loves motorcycles I hate them, they’re too dangerous’. Ok well whatever Bubba. ‘There are too many bike wrecks’. To which I replied, well that’s the chance we take when we ride and I tried to move away but by this time several have became interested in our banter him being big & fat, me a 5’ female and the line is not moving. He proceeds to tell the back of my head he is a volunteer worker and has scraped too many motorcycle riders off the road. So I thank him for sharing that with me. Then an older lady maybe 80’s started yelling at him to keep his opinions to himself apparently her son rode, if she’d had a cane I think she would have cracked him with it. So I ask you Doc why is it every time you walk out the door in a Harley T somebody who doesn’t have a clue wants to tell you about a bike wreck they heard about or somebody who has been injured, they’re neighbors cousin’s brother in West Virginia was maimed and oh how scary motorcycling is. Any suggestions on how to just shut them down from the onset? Karen M./Newberry, SC Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

Karen, The general public has had a bad opinion of bikers since the first caveman put two stone wheels together. That’s why our mean muggin, bad mouthing, rude, crude, lewd, dont “F” with me attitude stays on all the time. It doesn’t take many of these conversations with ignorant people to make you realize that you can’t explain what someone doesn’t understand.I’m sure that if you adopted the rough exterior and porcupine mentality that long time bikers share, it should reduce peoples need to express there opinions on you. Or you could go without a bath for a week our so. Dear Doc, What the heck is going on around here. ‘All bikers welcome, no colors allowed’. When I first read the signage I thought it meant no blacks which was a shocker. Then the bartender explained it meant no gangs. Now that doesn’t make a lick of sense. Motorcycle groups are considered gangs now, look at all the good things they do for charity. When was the last time you saw a gang helping a sick child or needy family at Christmas, or a veteran? Well I am not in a club but if I were I wouldn’t spend a single red cent in a place that wanted my business one day but not every day. What gives? I guess I just don’t get it. Aiken, SC From Aiken, The biker community in general has grown so large that anyone on a motorcycle can find someone to ride with. I don’t know who you were talking to but no self our club respecting, patch wearing biker would take their colors off for any reason, ever. If the cause was worthy and there was a no colors sign, then the club would find the administrator and make a donation behind closed doors. The men I know don’t care what you think of them and their charity work comes from the heart and no amount of publicity will change that. Everyone has the right to be different and if someone wants to have a bar or a run that doesn’t include clubs...So what? I do think its funny that I’ve never been to any clubs event or place of business where I saw a NO INDEPENDENTS sign.To each their own. To submit questions for
