Chrome Interviews The Beautiful & Badass
Angie Young
South Carolina lady biker and founder of drag racing Team Slick Wicked, Angie Young of Anderson SC recently won a national contest and in doing so she brought home the grand prize...a brand new Kawasaki ZX-14. She sat down with Chrome to answer a few questions....... 1) What was the process of Kawasaki’s zero to hero Challenge? I had to write an Essay, it was a contest sponsored by Kawasaki. Out of 3800 entries I was chosen as one the finalist. We then had interviews with Rickey Gadson (nine time world Champion motorcycle Drag Racer), and also with Kawasaki officials. They then narrowed down the finalist to 8.. I made it through to this level. The next level was a voting on line process that through my fans and supporters kept me at the highest % from day one through day 30. The Essay counted 50%, Interviews 30%, and the voting 20%. I then received the phone call from Rickey Gadson himself that I had made it to the 4 final finalist. The only female to make it through. I then attended Rickey Gadson’s Drag Racing school for 2 days in Las Vegas, and on the 2nd day qualified for my NRHA drag racing license. The 3rd day, I had to race the other guys for a chance to win a new zx-14r which is the fastest manufactured street bike in the world. It is also the Bike I rode and raced with in Las Vegas.
Page 12
2) And what was this competition like for you in Vegas? I will try to put this into words but It was an experience that I shall never forget.
1st Day, arriving at the track and run that bike for the first time... I thought to myself “What the Hell have you got yourself into now?” this bike had more horsepower than I had ever experienced. That’s when my inner voice kicked in and I knew I had no choice but to do this. The heat was unreal with racing gear on from head to toe. The track temps at 140 degrees, the dry heat made you work for your next breath. Several times I talked myself out of passing out. The other competitors were so much more experienced than I, as you have to remember this is only my 2nd season racing motorcycles. Having only raced our 1971 Chevy for the last 3 years. So with very little experience I find myself with other racers that were kicking my ass. I struggled. I remember my first night on that track, the heat had faded. When I got to the end of the track and turned you could see ALL the lights of Vegas in the distance. I thought “How Blessed I am to just be here.” The 2nd day was just as tough, although I did get a little braver off that start line. Cameras all in your face, the oppressive heat, the pressure of trying to remember everything Rickey Gadson and Ashon Dickerson were teaching me and telling me to do. It felt like 100 item check list in your mind from the water pit to the start line. This was the day we had to qualify for our NHRA License. You must run under 10 seconds in a quarter, not to mention qualifying in the 60ft, 220ft, 1000ft, and 1/8 of a mile. Again I struggled, over and over I came in at 10.1, 10.2...It was 10pm and time for the track to close. Rickey Gadson informed me I had one more shot for my NHRA License. Ashon Dickerson looked at me so serious and asked “You want your license?” I answered... “Yes sir.” He said “Go get them.”...I knew I wasn’t going to win this competition, but I be damned if I was going to leave without my license. After all I had been through! I made my final run.. when I came back around everybody at the track that night met me as I returned. I had run a 9.91. There were grown men wiping their eyes. A very emotional moment. The 3rd day arrived.. It was funny but I woke up with such peace and feeling so blessed to be having this experience. I talked to the good Lord that morning.. “I get it, you brought Lets-Ride me hereSaddle-Up to humble & me, but also blessed
me with all this. I’m ok with it, and I thank you. Just please keep me safe.” I arrived at the Track for our 4 practice runs before the big race. Remember that 9.91 I fought so hard for? My first pass... I run a 9.67 at 153mph. Rickey said, “Who are you?” I said “I’m the girl who came to win a bike.” My 3 other runs were very very consistent with my first. I thought, “Well, maybe?” .. my first race I was paired with Robert, (Dear LORD... he was only the best thing since Rickey Gadson). I knew I had met defeat. I run the race, not over thinking it and just letting my riding skills kick in and having fun! I returned to see Reah (my friend and teammate) hands in the air and jumping around like an idiot... I thought “there’s no way...” Yes, Robert had red lighted off the line. I was on to my next race... My last race I felt as calm and at peace as I did my first. I came back around to see Reah once again “CUTTIN UP!” I knew I had won, the other racer had broken out. Rickey walked over to me to present me with a key to my brand new ZX-14. I could hardly lift my head off the tank for in that moment all the hard work, heat, struggles, etc., had paid off. I freaking did it!!! Unbelievable. 3) What did this win mean for you? It meant I had finally earned the respect on the drag strip and in the drag world that I have fought for all these years for myself and Team Slick-Wicked. 4) There are 6 of you now on Team Slick-Wicked.. will others be joining your team? Yes there are 6, Myself, Reah Smith, Donna Blackwell, Ann Arnett, Beth Marie, & Jennifer McAbee. And yes, there will be more. 5) You must be proud of what you have accomplished so far? Why Hell yeah! I have worked so hard, for so many years and to see things falling into place. What more could you ask for. I’m living my dream. 6) Angie at what age did you start riding, who taught you? Age 5 Mom & Daddy bought me a Yamaha 50. My daddy ran beside me around and around the backyard until I got it.
7) You paint automotives, but that’s not all is it? And the name Slick-Wicked actually came from a painting technique you created for automotives, right? Lord no, I have worked as an artist for the last 20 years. Painting anything from a child’s bedroom mural to a Michael Angelo Sistine Chapel ceiling 20ft up. I paint faux finishes on ceilings, walls, furniture, floors, etc. I paint custom canvas’ for clients. Have painted cars, motorcycles, helmets. Painting is all I know. I always joke with clients when they compliment on my work... “ God said this one isn’t going to be real smart, we better let her paint.” I feel blessed to have the talent I do. Yes, Slick-Wicked did come from the textured auto paint I created. It looks and feels like a real snake. A snake is Slick and its Wicked. I said the two words together in the shop one day after painting it, and the guys standing around said..”There’s your name!” And it just always stuck. 8) How can we find and follow you and Team Slick Wicked? You can “like” our FB page at facebook.com/slick-wicked or follow us on Twitter @slick_ wicked. We are working on a website, but have spent every last penny on racing. Horsepower is not Cheap! We also have SlickWicked Tshirts and other items on our store, find them on our FB fan page to support, or contact us anytime if you or your company would like for us to send you a sponsorship proposal. Run your name/logo on everything we run, haul, and wear. 9) What sponsors do you have so far? A huge thank you to these people who believe in us.... Schampa, Adams Performance, Anderson Motorsports, Brocks Performance, Mps, Palmetto Moonshine, Dragbike.com, Roaring Toyz, Brad Penn Oil, Hogtails/ Ed Dalton, Fastech Inc., Timothy Moyer, Cobb Oxford, Paul Cavanaugh, Don Chavous.
questions our Carolina Chrome readers will be interested to know.. are you a single available Lady? LOL!!! Well, Yes I am single to the only fact I am not married, but nope I am not available. I have been with “Gare-Bear” Gary Allen for almost a year and so far, so good. 11) Your oldest Son is a Soldier in the U.S Army and serving for our country. Our Chrome Crew & readers thank him for his service. Can we give him a shout out? You have 3 boys that you have raised as a single mother, right? Thank you so much... Yes Sgt. Chase Gray. He makes a mother so proud. So do my youngest two boys, AJ and Jager. All 3 have always supported me and have truly witnessed the years of work that have gotten me thus far, but it’s funny everybody always ask what my boys think about what I do. The oldest of course wants me to teach him, the youngest two don’t see the big deal? They have been raised in this and don’t know any different than my lifestyle. They keep me humble. 12) Are All challenges being accepted on the drag strip? You better believe it, I have a lot yet to learn but willing to run anyone that wants to run beside me in a “bracket race”. Here Kitty,Kitty,Kitty. Nah... just teasin. It’s all fun. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t love it so much. 13) And in closing, where do you go from here, your goals with your racing career? This is an easy question.... I hope to be the 1st female in history to reach top fuel in motorcycle drag racing. I also will be going after the land speed record in my class before to much longer.
Editors Note: With Angie’s drive, determination, and skill we are sure she will achieve her goals! Be sure to follow Team Slick Wicked on Facebook for the upcoming specials on Speed Channel & Discovery Channel. A special shout out to Mike ‘Breeze’ Cole for the amazing 10) OK, I hope you don’t photos of Team Slick Wicked and the www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com mind but just a few personal August 2012 Cover. You Rock!

Chopper Wiring __________ One great thing about bare bones, no frill choppers, is their simple wiring. I’m talking about true choppers, no turn signals, horns or LEDs. Just the essentials to get from point A to point B. A basic chopper just needs a headlight with a Hi/ Lo beam, a rear running light with brake light, charging and ignition systems. This applies to any make, whether it’s a Harley, British or Metric. It is best to separate these three systems (lighting, charging, ignition) as three individual circuits using breakers rather than fuses. Breakers will trip themselves when there are problems and reset. Fuses blow and are a one time use item which could leave you on the roadside with no extras if you should have problems. Wiring the systems this way will also help if one system should fail or develop a short. A lighting system problem would not affect the running or charging and still

leave a way home or to help if wired separate rather than a single main or shared breakers. The charging system return would need to be wired directly to the battery through a large breaker, usually a 20 or 30 amp. Some charging systems on metric bikes use an electromagnetic rotor that requires 12volts to become energized. In this case a separate switched and protected circuit must be added for the rotor. The remaining systems should require no more than a 10 to 15 amp breaker each. Since we are talking real choppers, we are not covering electric start system as this doesn’t apply. When wiring a kick only bike, it is best to wire a toggle or rocker style switch in line, but after the breaker for the lighting system. This will allow you to turn off the lights and let more battery power be used in the ignition of the bike when starting. Wiring it this way can help greatly when trying to kick start with a low power/small battery installed. Older Triumphs and other Saddle-Up Brit Iron& Lets-Ride used a
positive ground system from the factory. Simplify working on these old bikes by reversing the negative and positive leads through out the wiring to create a standard negative ground system. The industry now makes very dependable replacement components for the stock Lucas parts, so you can ditch that zener diode regulator. MOST SOUTHERNERS KNOW ABOUT OR HAVE SEEN THE BONNIE BLUE FLAG. IT WAS THE FIRST UNOFFICIAL CONFEDERATE FLAG, HOWEVER MOST DON’T KNOW THE ORIGIN. I’LL TRY MY BEST TO EXPLAIN.. AT ONE TIME A PART OF FLORIDA WAS OWNED BY THE SPANISH. THE SPANISH SWAPPED LOUISIANA AND PART OF FLORIDA FOR CUBA TO THE FRENCH . THE PART OF FLORIDA THAT WAS SWAPPED WAS SETTLED BY THE BRITISH. THEY TOOK UNKINDLY TO THIS DECLARED WAR AND WON THERE INDEPENDENCE AND BECAME THE REPUBLIC OF WEST FLORIDA. THEIR FLAG “THE BONNIE BLUE”. WHEN THE UNITED STATES ACQUIRED THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE, THE REPUBLIC JOINED THE US. MANY CONFEDERATE UNITS CARRIED THE FAG DURING THE WAR.

HOT SPRINGS In June I once again set off for the hills of North Carolina in my annual search for a good time and the Hot Springs Motorcycle Rally did not disappoint. The weather was hit and miss this year as we took another unfamiliar route through the mountains and were caught in a frog strangler of a rainstorm. We had geared up for rain as we could read the sky and we knew we were in for it. As with most mountain roads, pulloffs are few and far between so we just soldered on until we found a place to take a break. As it would happen, it turned out to be just as the rain was ending. Friday we arrived in Hot Springs, as this year we found accommodations only two miles down the road from the campground! My wife and I
stayed in a riverside cabin for just a few dollars more than it would have cost for the hotel we usually stay in in Mars Hill, and without the 20 mile drive. The rally went off without a hitch and had the usual entertainment, top notch bands, biker games, and this year the addition of a mobile strip club. So I had plenty of entertainment. Several motorcycle clubs were again present, and we were all spared the uniformed LEO’s that used to hang around just outside the campground trying to catch someone who left the rally without their helmet. This year they kept a discrete distance and everyone had a good time despite this year’s weather being a little wetter than in years past. Being this close to the rally allowed me to take more time to explore the roads of the area. While taking a break at a scenic pull-out we struck us a conversation with a gentleman riding an ST1300, who recommended a quaint diner for us to check out. It in-deed was a fifty’s style diner just off the highway. The food was great, and while there we found a local map originally intended to show the local tourist attractions. However we found it to have ALLOT of back roads identified which were not on any of the maps we use for that region. Using that map we found some awesome mountain scenery and roadways to explore. As much as I love the rally at Hot Springs, This year it took a back seat to our exploration of the countryside. Remember its always Location, Location, Location, and the Hot Springs Rally is held in one of the fines riding locations in the country. Cruiserwww.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com

Jesus caught his fish, then he cleaned them. Well Howdy folks, Man is it been hot or what, whew gotta love these Carolina summer days. Got something a little different for ya this month, as a young guy I was a rebellious young man, I stayed in trouble, with drugs, alcohol and stealing. You know out of all of these things I had done, folks would forget the trouble I started, they would forget about all the drugs and alcohol I consumed but folks when I would steal, not only did I mark myself for life, But I would mark the folks I was stealing from as well. You see these folks had worked hard for the things that they had and me being STUPID as I was thought that I needed it more than them. Taking things that is not yours is not cool folks, not at all now I done my time for it and trust me they broke this ol boy from sucking eggs so to speak. See the bible speaks of this very thing “Thou shalt not steal” when we do this it says something of the person that you truly are S-saying that I deserve it more than you, T-telling the world who you really are, E-enlightening folks that you really can’t be trusted, A- avoiding the fact that you need to get a job and work for it you will appreciate it more, L- letting folks know not to turn there back on you, I- Indulging in something you have no business in, N- not trying to better yourself at all, letting someone else work for the things you are willing to take, G- going just as low as you can go man, STEALING. Ya see folks there is no future in it unless you want to spend a lot of time in the penitentiary. And folks this is just how the devil works, he will tell you that its all right to do Page 34
these things, he wants you to. The bible says that we were created in Gods image, well my friend He didn’t act this way when we let this come In The Wind With Christ, into our life we Rev. Cotton Pate are letting the Chrome Crew devil control [803] 475-9165 our life, come [803] 246-0554 on folks wake up you weren’t born to act this way, you choose to do this and only you, don’t blame it on the drugs or alcohol, after I did my time for this I continued with the drugs and alcohol, but they had broke me from taking what did not be long to me, See it wasn’t the drugs it was the devil I let him run my life direct the things that I would and would not do. You need the peace and understanding that only God can give, and the sadness of it all is that if you would man up and asked the folks they probably would have gave it to ya to start with, Can’t explain why I am on this I know all of my life and even today I and others as well have said “man I hate a thief” Folks I don’t want to be hated by no one, No matter how big it makes you feel I promise you are not anything more than the devil wants you to be, And quit letting the devil steal what is yours, Joy, Peace, Happiness, Love and Respect for others, so until next time remember that there is one that will forever ride with you Jesus Christ. Emergency Awareness By: Cotton Howell Hi folks, yep another Cotton contributing to the best motorcycling magazine in the world. The difference being that Preacher Cotton is trying to save our souls where I just want to help save our ass. In the next few paragraphs I hope to remind everyone of the importance of being prepared. Not just prepared for the stuff that might happen to us when we are out on our bikes, but for all the things that can happen when we are not riding, All of us know the importance of being prepared for a disaster such as a hurricane, tornados, fires, sudden illness, terrorism, nuclear accident or some other devastating event. But in reality, we really haven’t given it much thought. Having a home or family emergency plan is not anything we even want to think about. Something as simple as a power outage can throw our entire communities in turmoil. Now you are saying to yourself, not me. I’ll give you some examples: In 1999 as we prepared for the dreaded Y2K we became survivalist. We were prepared for anything, or so we thought. We stockpiled food and water but in the winter of 2000 when an ice storm knocked out power to
here are a couple of good emergency planning web sites : SC Emergency Management Division http://scemd.org/ American Red Cross http://www.redcross.org/
much of upstate South Carolina we were devastated. Here twelve years later it would be even worse. If the power is out for a few hours people go nuts. Their cell phones can’t be charged even if the cell sites are working, the internet is down, no TV and no texting or e-mail. I have heard horror stories where families had to even talk to each other during power outages because they weren’t able to play video games or watch TV. Our dependence on an uninterrupted supply of electricity is the one most important thing in our lives. If you don’t believe me, turn off all the power in your home for one hour say from seven to eight PM. I mean everything. You can’t look at the microwave clock to see what time it is, no TV, no internet, no lights and telephone only if you have an old wired telephone. (In a major power outage those might not work either since the public switch network is IP (internet protocol) based. Every household should have a seventy-two hour emergency supply kit. It does not have to be elaborate, just the basics. A battery powered flashlight, a battery powered radio,( both with batteries that work ). A three day food supply. It might
not be the regular hots dogs and beer but something that will keep us alive. Nonperishable goods, peanut butter, canned meats, crackers and bottled water will keep us going. My favorite is Pop Tarts. They have a long shelf life and will last for years in the freezer. Having a plan for what your family should do also gives you peace of mind. Imaging the feeling you would have if you were at bike week in Daytona and your family had a serious emergency at home. I can’t think of a more helpless feeling as an unprepared family tries to hold it together until you get home. Now imagine the same situation if you and your family had developed an emergency plan. Things like a major power outage, a fire or other event would still be as bad but the emotional strain would be a lot less. The plan could even have information that might save lives in a natural disaster, but that we will save that for later. The people I ride with are some of the most caring and compassionate people in the world. All it takes is one call that a biker needs help and we all go running. Let’s do all we can to never be the biker needing help.

A Closer Look At Sidecars & Trikes If you had to go by me, you would wonder why more bikers haven’t tried a trike or a sidecar. Don’t get me wrong, I love 2 wheels, but when I got my first Ural Gear Up with an active sidecar wheel that could be disengaged, I was hooked! My first tour through the back woods with my hunting gear made me a believer. The sand shell roads and rough terrain were no match for my sidecar rig. Sliding the rig into a 3 wheel drift around corners is a trip! I had a jet pilot friend of mine hollering from the sidecar with a white-knuckled grip on the hand-hold. A sidecar motorcycle is a three-wheeled vehicle with the side wheel not directly aligned with the rear motorcycle wheel, and is usually powered by the rear wheel only. This is different from a motorcycle (trike), where both rear wheels are powered and share a common axle. However, either P.V. Mokharov of the Soviet Union or H.P. Baughn of Great Britain seem to have to been the first to employ a driven sidecar wheel in 1929. Baughn two-wheel-drive outfits were so successful in trials events in the early 1930s that there were attempts to have the ACU ban them from competition. A great many companies experimented with twowheel drive in sporting events and indeed many companies employed them in military vehicles prior to the commencement of WWII. Currently, the Russian manufacturer Ural produces several models with twowheel drive that can be engaged as desired. (see the Gear-Up above) A sidecar makes the handling of a bike asymmetrical. Without a brake on the non-driven sidecar wheel, the sidecar will pull towards the bike under braking, and towards the sidecar under acceleration. While a sidecar pilot is described as driving rather than riding, with all but the heaviest rigs, the comparison to a car is weak. Driver and passenger

body position affect higher speed handling, especially on dirt or other uneven surfaces. If the sidecar and bike geometry are not coordinated the combination will be unstable, especially at speed, with shimmy upon acceleration or deceleration. I paid a visit to the Hannigan MotorSport factory in Murray Kentucky where my Supersport side car was built. Hannigan was started in Canada in 1972 out of David Hannigan’s garage. Ruth Ann Hannigan quipped, “We were riding a lot and didn’t like the cold and the wind, so David made a ferring in the garage.”. People started asking about the ferrings and he built some. They moved to Toronto and started a BMW franchise. The ferring became an item and they started a new company, The Hannigan Ferring Company, now The Hannigan Ferring Company dba Hannigan Motorsports. When ferrings became popular with the major motorcycle companies, Hannigan started making sidecars. Hannigan fabricates all of their own side cars. They make the molds, make the plugs, all the mounts, and the framework. They found that the lower center of gravity and better aerodynamic shape added stability and allowed for higher speeds. The first sidecar was an Astro that had seating front and back for 2. When they arrived in the US from Ontario 20 years ago they discontinued the 2 seater and went to a one seater that they sell now. The suspension system is unique on the Hannigan. They use a dual suspension system with a leading link arm to absorb the bumps first and then progressive shock springs for a softer ride. Automotive reclining seats are installed for comfort. They even have a swamp cooler that goes in the trunk and has a 3 speed fan. An air-conditioned sidecar! Around
$700 when built at the factory. Prices for the rigs range from $4000$11,000. The sidecar is ½ the price of a trike and allows you to easily convert back to a 2 wheeler. The electronic camber control is an option that keeps the bike level whatever the load in the side car. I’ve scared a few people who were investigating my rig when I push a switch and the sidecar mysteriously lifts. If you haven’t considered a sidecar, check them out. They add safety and comfort. Taking 2 passangers and the dog to the beach is just not doable on a 2 wheeler. I’ll get into the set up of sidecars in a future article as well as profiles of other manufacturer’s and mechanics. Suffice to say, there are many new improvements in the suspension and ride of the sidecar. I have a particular bias toward the sidecar over the trike. Trikes outsell sidecars by nearly 20 to 1. I can’t figure that one out. I think that it’s the learning curve. Trikes are more similar in handling to the 2 wheelers whereas the side car has you steering into the turn. Right hand turns can be a bit scary, in that the geometry causes the sidecar to lift (called flying the rig). This takes some getting used to. I spent a month under 40mph doing figure 8’s and tight turns to get used to the rig. To all my buddies down range, stay safe. Leland “Old Spook” Landesberg

Finding the Perfect Pet By: Marli, Santee Chrome Crew
I don’t get paid to ride my motorcycle, so like most folks, I also have a day job, gotta keep gas in the scoot. After chatting with RubyRed one afternoon and sharing a little about my work (w/Columbia Animal Shelter), she asked if I would put together a few quick tips, facts, etc. for each issue about the world of animal care and control and caring for our pets. So, here we go..#10 People often ask me to find them the perfect pet. I wish it were that simple, but the truth is, the person receiving the pet really needs to be involved in the process. Finding that pet is sometimes a daunting process, particularly if you are a first time pet owner. So here are a few things to consider when you are trying to pick one out. For starters, don’t choose an animal breed or type because it is the current fad or was recently made famous by being on TV or in a movie. Show biz animals are highly trained – which is why they seem so perfect. Are you a couch potato or physically active? This can be a big factor in determining what breed or even species of animal. It’s always best to find a pet that has the same energy level as yourself. All too often we have a citizen bring back a pet because it was way too active for them or just the opposite. Do you travel a lot? If so, that’s okay, you just may want to consider getting two pets
so they have each other for company when you are gone. Typically cats are a little easier to care for when travel is involved on a regular basis. Do you have a home with a yard or are you in an apartment? Exercise is needed by all pets, even those with lower energy. Again a cat or smaller dogs may be better suited in an apartment. Of course, still consider breed. A high energy Jack Russell Terrier is small, but high energy. However, if you get out for regular exercise and taking the dog along, larger or high energy dogs can do just fine in apartments. For that matter, even if you have a yard, pets still need to get regular exercise other than just spending time alone in the yard. Are you allergic to animals or not sure? Before you get that first pet, you may want to spend some time with someone else’s pet or volunteer at a local shelter to see if you have any allergic reactions. There are some breeds out there that are low shedders, but the allergies come from the pet dander. That will still be present to some degree. Technology with cleaning tools, specific HVAC filters, etc. can greatly reduce pet dander in the home, making it easier to own a pet even if you do have some allergies. Do you have small children in the home? Sometimes people think with smaller children they should get a smaller dog. Keep in mind that some smaller breeds

pet tips
are nervous by nature and can get snappy around unpredictable, fast moving kids. Finding something easy going by nature, even if it’s a larger breed, may be better. Cats and dogs are social creatures. Even if you are home a lot, but perhaps work full time, like most of us, consider getting two pets. While you are away, they will have each other for company and truthfully, having two pets isn’t that much more work than having one. Are you financially able to provide for a pet? On average plan to spend a few hundred dollars - minimum - a year on food, vet visits, etc. One more thing to consider for now, are you willing to make a 15 year commitment to your new pet? Getting a pet is a responsibility and many will live quite a long time. Make sure you are willing and able to provide for this pet for the rest of its life. Even with all this and more to consider, the rewards are worth. For the life of that pet you will have a loyal friend who will give unconditional love, listen to your complaints or happy stories, think you are the coolest person on earth, do crazy things that make you laugh and be a shoulder to cry on when needed. Who knows, a pet may make the choice easy for you. It may wander up as a stray and find you. But if you are looking for that new pet, please consider a shelter pet. There are some awesome ones out there.

Dear Dr. DILLIGAF
ARTICLE CONTAINS CONTENT THAT MAY BE OBJECTIONABLE
Dear Dr. DILLIGAF, Can businesses legally bar a certain group of people from a public place? More and more I see public business’s (restaurants/ bars)with signs on the door stating “No Colors”, I realize that bar owners can make themselves a private club and only allow membership to those they want but how does this work if you aren’t a private club or are a restaurant? Does no colors also mean anyone or is it just meant for MC members. There are more than MC’s that have back patches and rockers. Seems to be that you would start limiting your customer base. I know plenty of Patch Holders, who are really great folks and would give you the shirt off their back, it just seems wrong to me that they can be excluded just because they choose to belong to an MC. Just Curious Rock Hill, SC Just Curious, The law states that anyone who provides food or drink for profit are not allowed to discriminate against anyone for handicap, age, race, or religion. However, they can refuse service to anyone who does not abide by a posted dress code or an establishment that is “members only” as the dress code would be provided on the application. Too much History channel for some folks makes them crazy but we all need to admit that some of us just aren’t fit for public consumption. My advise to anyone is to stay where you’re welcome and support the bars and kind people that support you and not give a dime to anyone that can’t respect you for who you are. Dear Doc, Everybody is trying to figure out who you are. We at first thought it was Ruby but now know you must be a man. Do you ride around South Carolina and will you ever reveal your true self to the ladies?
I F YO U A R E E A S I LY O F F E N D E D T U R N T H E PA G E N O W Lady Rider Anderson, SC Lady rider, Curiosity killed the cat and the dog ain’t doin much better. The only thing I’m going to tell you about me is that I’m a Biker that rides world wide. So get on your bike and ride until you find me, hope you have gas money. Doc, I just started dating a man who has a sportster. He introduced me to his roommate who has a bigger bike, an Electric Glider. It was love at first site. How can I switch back seats without ruining their friendship? Or should I really care? Sammie West Pelzer, SC Sammie, Judging a man based on the size of his motorcycle shouldn’t be as important as how far he’s willing to ride. Johnny Depp said, “If you’re in love with two people you should always choose the second one because they wouldn’t be there if you loved the first.” Dr. Dilligaf, I have been a biker all my life, and have done some great things because of it. I feel I have to tell this story... I got a call from a Bike Shop, the service manager asked me to come down to look at a horror story. I’m a welder, a pretty damn good one. I had done some welding for this shop, and it turned out very nice. I guess the service manager thought I was a miracle worker because what I had found was a true horror story. I was looking at a chopped bike, someone had taken a saw, some bondo, and a backyard weld machine and took an otherwise safe to ride bike and turned it into a death trap. The new owner had ridden it from Charlotte to Charleston via the interstate, the thought of that trip gave me chills. I tried to talk the guy into going back to Charlotte NC to get his money back, but that www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com
was not gonna happen. The owner asked me if I could fix it. I took a good hard look and said yes. I’m glad I did because I made a great friend during the course of this project. We did some internet shopping and found a salvage outfit in Texas, they had a real nice replacement frame for this bike, clear title, they delivered it to my doorstep..We did the ol swaparoo, putting all his good parts onto a replacement frame. When it was finished he had a real nice bike, I rode it for 300 miles shaking it down, working out nonexistent bugs.... The day him and his woman came to my shop to pick it up was a happy one. They rode off into the sunset. I never saw that guy again, But Red, if your reading this I hope that bike is still bringing you happiness, it sure was fun turning junk into treasure (Reds a chef, a pretty dang good one). Everyone is a custom builder these days, but buyer beware. If it’s your first bike have it checked out by someone you trust. especially if it’s a used bike. Tires and brakes are the biggies, but a stretched and raked piece of junk, is a piece of junk. I have seen it way to often. So c’mon people, let’s all try to be cool. Thanks, Bob the builder Charleston, SC Bob, Tell Red to keep them steaks coming and get yourself another beer on me. I hope your attitude tword the safety of your fellow biker is contaigious. I want get into the many methods of custom bike building here but any fabricator worth their salt knows to put an unsafe product in the trash pile and not under someone who could be riding down the road beside them one day. Tell that new rider to keep whatever was in their pocket on that journey home and go buy a lottery ticket. To submit questions for
