2011 Chrome Man of the Year Award

The “Great Man” theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that “the history of the world is but the biography of great men.” He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. The Chrome Crew believes the “Man of the Year” award consist of respect, loyalty, and devotion used as glue to hold the Biker Community together should earn this award. The 2011 Man of the Year Award goes to Tony Fields from Anderson SC. Tony is originally from Anderson where he graduated from Westside High School and has a beautiful daughter, Eliza. He went on to open an automotive body shop and began marketing music. He founded Fields and Eliza Inc. where he markets most of the HOTTEST bands in the area. Tony has been in sales the past 20 years and plays a huge role in Coe’s Roofing. He bought the Twisted Spoke in Pendleton SC in 2009. When I asked Tony what inspired him to make the purchase he simply said, “I did this so all my friends and soon to be friends would have a cool place to hang out and listen to some kick ass music. We have been working with different bands for over 5 years putting out CD’s and forming a business relationship between the bands and the Twisted Spoke. I’m not in it for the money, the Twisted Spoke is a NonProfit Organization and the money is donated to different organizations in the area. My main focus this year will be MAA. (Motorcycle Awareness Alliance) I’ve been riding for 30 years and truly know the meaning of “Look Twice, Save a Life”. Tony will help anyone in need, …a “Biker Down”, a child with Cancer, our Vets and he supports ALL of the area M/C’s & R/C’s even sending children to the Special Olympics. Congratulations Tony Fields and thanks for all you do for the Biker Community. Tina CP, Upstate Chrome Crew www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com

Daytona

CRUISER’s

news & reviews

As you read this the Daytona Motorcycle Rally will be fast approaching and I for one swore off the event after my last experience in 2008. However I will likely be eating my words as several friends are planning on making the trip this year and have invited me along. This year rather than spending several days in the Florida sunshine, I plan on an out-and-back trip of about 3 days. One day to ride down one to visit the rally and one back. Just long enough to buy the t-shirt and stay out of trouble, well mostly anyway. Having been to the rally twice I have seen many bikers and wanabees up to their seat cover in a trouble, and it’s not from a bar fight or conflict with a MC. In Daytona the trouble will find you in the shape of a blue uniform. You see, the rally is a cash cow for more than the businesses of Main Street; it is also one for the “city of Daytona”, as tickets are written at a blistering pace by the state and local law enforcement. Stories abound of party goers who rev-up at a light, or make a jackrabbit start and find themselves in front of a blue light on the side of the road. Once they have an excuse to pull you over which can be as minor as lowed pipes, they begin a “safety inspection” of your motorcycle. Brother they write up EVERYTHING that does not comply with Florida state law, knowing most will pay the fines (most have no points) and call it a day, because it would me more expensive to fight it than

pay it. This is particularly true inside Daytona’s city limits, so my advice to myself and anyone else planning on a run to the sun this year is to watch you P’s &Q’s when in the city, make sure your ride has no glaring problems, and find a good party on the outskirts (usually at the cabbage patch) and enjoy yourself. If your ride is highly “customized” with things like, side license plate holders and no turn signals, all legal in SC, you might still find yourself fined in FL. So be aware of the potential for a run in with LEO and his buddies. If you do find yourself on the receiving end, keep cool, and be respectful, it can be the difference between one fine, or several. We Ride......We Understand…… From Peake and Fowler Law Firm, P.A. By Thomas K. Fowler, Jr.

Whose fault was it? Typically that is the first question we hear when discussing a wreck. I am hoping some of the pointers in this article will help answer that question to your benefit. It is possible that you lose even though you were hit from behind! Believe it or not that its true because South Carolina is what is known as a “comparative negligence” state meaning that when weighing the fault for an accident, a jury is allowed to compare the fault of all parties…..yes, that includes you if you are the driver of your bike for instance. Worse yet, if the jury finds you 51% or more at fault, you lose. For example, suppose your rear tire goes flat and causes you to stop without much warning in your lane of travel and the car behind you cannot stop in time….crash!. You later discover that, had you simply checked your tire before you left, you would have seen a big nail sticking out the side which resulted in your having to stop and getting hit from behind. A jury could easily find your fault in operating with faulty equipment greater than the driver who hit you from behind and you lose! So, how do you avoid being held more at fault in a wreck in this Page 12

scenario? Very simple……T-CLOCK. This is a safety check reminder published by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and means checking for any problems with your bike’s: T …………tires and wheels C………….controls L………….lights O………….oil C………….chassis K………….kickstand (check out http://msf-usa.orge) Simple enough huh? Recently I was in a deposition with a guy who had been riding all his life and he had no idea what T-CLOCK meant. But if you have done what you can to inspect for safety in our example, the likelihood you will be held at greater fault is reduced. Why is this important? Simply because these are standards by which a rider’s conduct may be judged in a case to see what portion of the fault in causing the accident was his/hers. Not using “reasonable care” could cost you dearly. I do not like to lose my cases and you probably would not either so pay attention and use care so you won’t be accused of being at fault..............Ride safe.

Jockey

Shift'n __________ There is just something about jockey shifting a bike that’s cool. You can’t explain it, but just like having a kick start only bike, you just know it’s cool. If you’re not familiar with jockey shifting, it’s when the shifting of the gears is done by a hand operated lever located behind the left thigh. The term jockey shifting derives from the motion of the rider shifting gears resembling a horse jockey whipping the horse in a race.

With the left hand operating the gear shifting, another method of clutch operation must be used. On Harley’s, this is done with a foot operated clutch. 4 Speed Transmissions utilize a rod running from the clutch arm to the shifter lever. This turns the shifter

lever into a clutch pedal. 5 or 6 Speed Transmissions as well as Sportsters use a cable operated kit to convert the shifter.

master cylinder mounted on the handlebar. This will leave the front wheel very clean looking with no brake setup. A helpful hint is to run a neutral light. Knowing when the bike is in neutral eases the learning process of jockey shifting.

Most Metric bikes can simply relocate the clutch lever from the handlebars to the actual shifter handle. With this method, you Keep the wrenches would not have a foot clutch. The clutch lever would be spin’n & the sparks a fly’n. Later, Mojo squeezed while grasping the shifter handle. One of the down sides to jockey shifting is when operating a foot clutch, only one leg is left to hold the bike up at a stop. On most choppers, there is no front brake. So, with one foot operating the clutch & the other foot operating the rear(only) brakes, it can get a bit dicey starting off on a hill. A common setup used to help with this problem is to run disc rear brakes operated by a Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

January 21st, grey skies, rain, drizzle and fog shrouded the city of Charlotte North Carolina, which was once again the backdrop for the Easyrider Motorcycle Show. This year attendance was up from a few years past. This may have been the result off a rebounding economy, or overflow from the NASCAR driver preseason driver introductions being held on the upper floor of the Convention Center. Or it may have been the celebrity appearances of Mike and Angie from the reality TV show “Full Throttle Saloon” or the two “Sons of Anarchy” stars Tommy Flannigan, and Winter Zoli, which may have brought in the crowd. Whatever the reason, the Easyrider’s “Perfect Angels” performers commented that this was the biggest audience which they had performed for so far this year, and making your way through the crowd as you navigated the rows of bikes and venders left little doubt that it was in fact a good turnout. It was encouraging to see the increased enthusiasm. For the past 10 years, the Easyrider Motorcycle Show has been my first attended event of the year marking the beginning of what I considered my biker season. After the economic bubble burst a few years ago the show has shrank in size and attendance each year. This year’s event has rebounded and included celebrity guests and great bands on hand making this year’s show a great first event of the year. Motorcycle displays were about the same number as the recent past, mostly local builders and owners. What I loved about the displays was the incredible diversity in the rides. Rides varied from one off customs to rare and classic machines, including some bizarre and unusual builds and sportbikes conversions. There was something there for everyone, and vendors struggled to keep up with demands of the larger crowd. Calendar girls were signing a steady stream of calendars for waiting fans, and if you were planning on a signature and pictures from the guest celebrities, you were in for a wait as the lines stretched all the way back to Rock Hill. Classic cars and hot rods were again a part of the “Motorcycle” Show which I still have mixed feelings about, but rides were cool and it broke up the same old same old. No matter how its measured I’m sure the show will be judged a success. This year The Charlotte Convention Center will also host the “International Motorcycle Show” This trade show, once held in Atlanta Ga, then Greenville SC, will showcase all brands of motorcycles some well know some obscure, as well as a vast array of accessories. So if you missed the Easyrider Motorcycle Show, mark your calendar for the24th, 25th, and 26th, of February and I may see you there. Cruiser (photos: Sue Carter)

Hell (Fighters) On Wheels

Answer me honestly; If I said the word “ministry” what comes to mind? A little white building, pews, pulpit, little old ladies giving you the evil eye while saying “I can’t believe they wore full leathers to church”, that sort of thing right? Yeah that would have been my guess too before Ms. RubyRed sent me to meet Rick “Tater” Tate. Rick is head man of the Hellfighters Christian motorcycle ministry and if I may say so, one of the most sincere people you could ever want to meet. For over two years the upstate chapter of the Hell Fighters ministry has fed the hungry and provided as much as can be provided for the upstate’s homeless and under privileged, with a goal of one day soon opening a home for the homeless and recently released prisoners. When asked what sets this group away from others rick comments that this is a motorcycle ministry that supports its message and cause and not the patch they wear. Rick recalls happily taking his patch off to accommodate a request from another club at a rally. “We are here to help and not cause trouble” said Rick. The general conception of the club is that the patch takes a back seat to the good they are trying to accomplish through their service of the Lord. Service, as it turns out, that comes in many forms such as cook outs with burger and bible give aways and free gas fill ups. Yes I said FREE GAS. During some of the bigger named rallies like Daytona the group will rent a gas pump for no other reason than to have the opportunity to talk to and pray for you. This year will be the first group trip to Sturgis where they plan to help and demonstrate God’s love in a whole new way. Running some-

thing like a med tent, the club will be there to offer a safe “sobering up spot” for those who enjoyed the party a little too much but not enough to where they should have to wear the bracelets for it. How groovy is that? The real kicker is their level of dedication; these cats aren’t vastly well known, but for a very good reason. THEY STAY SO BUSY HELPING OTHERS!!! How does that not scream genuine article. These are bikers that are missing runs and rallies because they are too busy helping others. We should all be so fortunate. And it goes beyond homeless ministry, Rick himself is an ordained minister performing biker weddings and funerals on a regular basis or has he puts it; “ give me a call, I can marry ya or burry ya”. These guys provide such a well organized and needed service, and as you can imagine they take what help they can get. So please make it a point from now on to ...... Is Your Pet Id’d? The Microchip

By: Marli, Santee Chrome Crew I don’t get paid to ride my motorcycle, so like most folks, I also have a day job, gotta keep gas in the scoot. After chatting with RubyRed one afternoon and sharing a little about my work (w/ Columbia Animal Shelter), she asked if I would put together a few quick tips, facts, etc. for each issue about the world of animal care and control and caring for our pets. So, here we go...... #4 By now, most folks have heard about microchipping pets as a form of permanent identification. Some people love the idea while others are a little freaked out by the technology. I personally think they are great. I’ve seen them in action and would recommend it to any pet owner. Micro-chips are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted with basically a large syringe just below the skin between the shoulder blades. And it’s pretty painless to the animal. The chip then carries a unique i.d. number that is stored in a data base. The chip can be scanned at any veterinary hospital or shelter. Once scanned, that number is traced back to the owner and the process begins to reunite pet and person. However, you need to make sure that chip is registered with the national database with your current contact information. But that is easy enough. Micro-chips are also relatively cheap – usually $25 - $75 – and the security they provide is well worth it. We have traced chips back to owners in Georgia, Nevada, Maryland and many more places. Not to mention hundreds locally. Once owners were tracked down, we discovered some animals had actually been stolen weeks or even months prior to us finding them. And some of the thieves were caught. You may have heard some of the stories of cats stowing away in suitcase or in car engines only to find themselves halfway across the country. Luckily they had micro-chips and the owners were easily found and the animals were able to return home. These are just a few of the many stories we see almost daily. If you are a pet owner, you will be doing your pet a great favor by having them chipped. You protect them and you protect yourself. Hmmmmm…wonder if we can chip our motorcycles. Dear Dr. DILLIGAF

Dear Dr. Dilligaf, What the hell are men thinking buying a woman a sportster as her first motorcycle to learn on? The most top heavy, unbalanced motorcycles I have ever had the displeasure of throwing my leg across. Guess some men are just trying to get off cheap and get the women off the back. Girls you can come ride with me. Doc are you a woman or a man? I’d like to ride you. Bull Missy, Aiken SC Dear Bull, The Sportster has always been regarded an “entry level” bike because of its low cost. It was the cheapest Harley a person could buy for many years which led it to be the least expensive to repair. Since EVERYONE goes down it just makes good sense to give first timers something that wouldn’t cost as much to fix when dropped.Speaking of going down cheap, Bull if you can’t balance a light weight Sporty then you don’t even need to think about throwing your leg over me.

Dear Dr. DILLIGAF, Why don’t all you South Carolina motorcyclist wear helmets like you have some common sense. After hearing Gov Haley say she would VETO the helmet law requirements, I think she should take out the seat belt requirements as well. Why should you ‘biker people’ be treated like a special class of citizen? It just makes me sick you are treated as if you are above safety and the laws of the land. Jim, Low Country Jim, ABATE of S.C. and freedom fighters from around this state have fought to keep the right to ride without a helmet here for years. As a

matter of fact in the early 90s ABATE fought to keep the seat belts off of everyone too. They were lied to. The state reps and senators told everyone that in order to get federal funding for our “out of date” roads that we had to have some type of seat belt law. They said they would only put a law on the books that said you had to wear it but that it would not be enforced unless you were doing something else wrong, we bikers warned the public that this was a slippery slope and sure enough the seat belt law became zero tolerance 4 years ago. Don’t be a dumbass, you want freedom stop bitching and fight for it, join ABATE and LET THOSE WHO RIDE DECIDE.

Dear Doc, Well it’s that time of year again. Bike Shows boys and girls. Time for all the trailer queens to hit the circuit with their chrome and glittered up money pits. All those sparkles looks like it should be on a bass boat. I once saw a trike pulled to a bike show in her own town and she won. I am still laughing over that one. Wish I could find a real bike show, a ride it in or you don’t get to enter show. Any suggestions? Blackjack, Tega Cay, SC Black Jack, I love your idea, organize it, promote it, hell, advertise it here and I will see you there.

Dear Dr. Dilligaf, I enjoyed your column in January issue. I work at a dealership (can’t say which one I’ll get canned). PLEASE tell people that saving gas is not a good reason to buy a motorcycle. I get this all the time from new customers when I ask what peeked your interested in motorcycles… ‘price of gas’. I see them as a splatter on www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com

the interstate and another statistic. One of the stupidest questions came from a ‘gas saver’ who lived on a gravel road, asked me if the tires would work out ok riding on sand and rocks or did he need specialty tires. I wanted to slap the stupid off his dummy ass. No Name/No Town No Name, Look at the Indian motorcycle Company, if it wasn’t for a government contract in WWII you wouldn’t have a dealership to work at. If fuel efficiency sells bikes and keeps your ass working so I don’t have to keep you up then I’m all for it. The fact that Bikers were the first to go “GREEN” shouldn’t be a shock. Our gas saving have been buying beer since 1903 which gets returned to good ol Mother Earth in rapid fashion.

Dear Doctor, LMAO at your January column. I have a question for you why do men say 10 inches when it’s more like 4? Fancy Nancy, Greenwood, SC Fancy Nancy, Of the two virtues patience and grace I believe you should practice grace. While patience is painfully waiting, grace is your ability to allow someone their illusions. So take off your water bra, remove your hair extensions, wash off those lashes, remove your fake fingernails, pull your butt pops down and make your man happy to give you both inches, then maybe you’ll get to put it all back on and be seen in public at the next Bike Event.
