Spartanburg H-D Open House By: Kidd of the Chrome Crew April 28,The day started out with overcast and a little brisk, but the ride, as always was great. Back roads and little towns are the best way to go when not in a hurry. Got to Spartanburg just as things were starting. Randal and Goldie and their whole staff were great, just like being at a close neighbors house. Every one needs to slip by and say hi if your in the Spartanburg area, all those vintage bikes are a must see. The BBQ was great, David from the band “Tytas Canby” was spinning the music. Most stopped in for a demo ride on their favorite H-D model, witch is always fun. And once again, I do not know who Dr. DILLIGAF is. I don’t think anyone really knows.

It happens, and when it does, you’ll have to be prepared for it. The most important ability one can master is the art of relaxation

during a fall. At some point during the process of a crash, your brain will recognize that your beloved rubber is going to shift sideways and will trigger a panic sensation that forces you to fight the act of rolling around on the ground. Your job is to master staving off this resistance. It’s how stuntmen make a living -- the art of relaxation during a chaotic event. The more you clench, push and flail, the more your body will be damaged in the accident. Relax your body and follow its organic path of movement. The Love Doctors M/C of Columbia kicked off their annual Bike Night on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Bike Night is a motorcycle event that is held every Wednesday at the El Toro’s Sports Bar & Grill. It is an event open to EVERYONE and every BIKE. There are vendor spots available and lots of great bikes to look at. We hold this event every year as a way for fellow bikers to mingle and have a good time. The food is great and the

drinks are cold! There is music and motorcycle challenges every week. Come out and test your skills on and off the bike. Roll in time is usually around 7pm with events kicking off at 8pm. We close off the main sections in front of the deck for motorcycle parking, vendor set-up, live DJ, games and more. Be on the lookout for prizes each week. TURN & BURN Doing a rally on a budget can be problematic. Even when you make arrangements to save here and save there you always seem to run into expenses you didn’t count on. Making sure I got the T-shirt and rally hat, being a tourist can still run into money even on a “short” weekend event. This year’s Daytona Spring Rally was no exception. It was my first rally on the Harley and it was the first time my wife went with me to the rally. I had been to Daytona twice before, once in 1999 while still riding sportbikes, and once in 2005 with friends from CRMC. Or was it 04, some of those years are still kind of fuzzy. Both times I went before without the wife so the bike was rigged solo. This time it had to be set for a passenger who still finds the back seat of a road king uncomfortable in comparison to my Star Road liner. With all the accommodations I could arrange under short notice we set out with a group of 3 couples on 4 Motorcycles. As usual my wife was a real trooper putting up with some minor rain and drizzles and temps in the 60’s through most of the weekend. As fate would have it we chose the wrong weekend to attend as the weather was sunny with temps in the 80 the following week. Still these times are about friends and ridding, and doing a turn and burn ride to Daytona will get you

plenty of both. My first long trip on the new Police bike showed a few deficiencies that will need to be worked out before I stretch its legs on longer rides. A small tour pack is in my future as well as some slight alteration for my passenger’s comfort and mine as well. Our first stop was Mecca of all things HD, the Daytona Dealership and JP warehouse. There they had just about everything I need to correct my issues readily available but the

these times are about friends & ridding funding was just not there at this time. I am still getting accustomed to the massive aftermarket parts availability for the HD. I mean I knew it was considerable, but when asking technicians how to change passenger comfort, they had about a hundred different ways to make it happen all dependent on how much I wanted to spend on the project. Overall our ride went well and although we had to dodge a few drizzles and a shower or two we made it to all the usual spots most rally attendees go to, with the exception of www.CarolinaChromeMagazine.com

news & reviews the Cabbage Patch which was on my list, but the short weekend prevented us from venturing to the south side of Daytona. Having been on two wheels for nearly 20 years now I thought I had seen it all, but I did have a new experience at this year’s Daytona. One of my friends and our club’s Road Captain, who went on this trip with me, insisted we go by the Daytona Dealership early in the trip and I was curious as to why. Little did I know he would be planning on purchasing a police bike (different year and color) but an FLHP similar to mine while at the rally. He made arrangements to take delivery the following weekend as he did another turn and burn run, this time toating a trailer to pick up his new ride. The bell rang 14 times while at the dealership so purchasing a bike during rally is not so unusual but I have never seen it done by anyone I knew until now. Now our group has two proud FLHP owners. I thought I busted my budget for this rally, but in comparison, I guess I did OK.

Jesus caught his fish, then he cleaned them. In Memory of a Dear Brother Phil Hinson OK check this out folks can ya believe that it’s all ready June, well that means this year is half way over with, flew by, have ya ever noticed that when it gets riding season (all year is riding season for some) time just flies man. Just when you get to enjoying the things in life you feel you was put here to do, seems like POOOF and it’s over, time to sit back and regroup. ya know this to is your life folks! If you are like me 50 or over man our life is half over, and there’s folks that say “well I’m gonna live this other half to the fullest” and that’s cool. But listen folks living for God is Living life to the fullest! and just like riding season time starts to fly by man, and you are really getting into where you are in life and things are going great(Hebrews 11:25)Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season, Ya see folks there is fun in sin, for a season, But the thing is how long is this season? (Hebrews 9:27) and as it is appointed to men once to die, But after this the judgment, Folks it’s a known fact we all are gonna leave here one day, the question is are you ready? We all live life to the fullest we just do it differently, Ya know I all ways thought Christians were some really boring people, But ya know I have had just as much if not more fun as a Christian as I ever had, Living for God does not mean dying in life itself, However you will die in your sins and live in Christ. I love to write this article each and every month, and most of all I enjoy sharing Gods word with all my biker friends and family, trust me ,just as crazy as I ever was but in a Page 34

different way. My Brother Phil and there’s lots of you folks that knew Phil, thank God He made things right with God before leaning us here on this earth, but man it don’t In The Wind With Christ, all ways happen Rev. Cotton Pate like that sometimes Chrome Crew death comes very [803] 475-9165 unexpected, and we have got to be ready, I really think if Phil could talk to us knowing him he would probably say something along the lines of (Man yall got to check this out Bro this is awesome)and most likely he would say “Don’t miss this chance” Listen it’s really simple I could and most of the time do write and tell you pretty much the same thing month after month, man the decision is yours, Phil made this decision and thanks be to God I will see my Brother again one day, and you to can have this assurance, What on this earth could possibly be worth dying and going to Hell for, that may seem stout to some folks ,but people it’s time real men and women of God get serious and quit sugar coating Gods word the fact is if it’s wrong it’s wrong,(James 4:17) Therefore to Him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to Him it is a sin, And that sums it up in a nut shell folks, My prayer is that if you don’t know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior that you will before it is ever lasting to late, Check out you a church man they are some really cool biker churches out there these days that teach the same thing you was taught as a child just in a different atmosphere, Folks I’m telling ya they are Churches out there that you will really enjoy, and they are all over the state if ya can’t find one near you get in touch with me or better yet they are a lot of them listed right here on this page, Well until next time remember that there is one that will forever ride with you Jesus Christ “Rest in peace Brother Phil” Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

So if you’re not going to church because you don’t think you fit in….too many tats, a piercing or two, your clothes are wrong, and you ride a motorcycle, or have been in prison. A Tribute To My Dad Submitted by: Michael Bragg May 17th, 2007 I would like to say started out as a normal day for me...but it didn’t. At 4am, as I lay asleep in the guest room of my dads home in Myrtle Beach, I was awaken by my stepmother, Lisa, with news of my fathers passing. Sitting at a stop light a half mile from home on his bike someone hit him from behind killing him. I walked to the wreck site alone watching as debris was cleaned from the road. My mind raced back to the previous day thankful I had spent it with him socializing with many friends in town from out of state for the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally. After almost 3 & 1/2yrs of legal battle I was able to pick my dads bike up from storage and start doing what he would’ve done...tear down and rebuild. In September 2010 my Godfather Tim “Tiny” Pruitt and I brought the bike back to Spartanburg and after many tears, frustrations and help of friends had it back on the road mid February 2011. In May 2011 I returned to Myrtle Beach with the bike. Each

Page 38

year the Weasels host a memorial run on May 17th in memory of my dad where members from various states across the country attend. 2011 was the first year I was able to ride my dads bike on this run. Dad had been a supporter of the Weasels and had been in the process of helping start the first South Carolina chapter at his time of passing. Friends followed through and formed the (Murrells) Inlet Weasels in his honor. Every day is hard and holidays are harder but having his bike back together and being able to ride as he would gives a peace only a biker can understand. Also being a young guy and riding a 1972 Shovelhead with an old school look I tend to get a lot of attention and asked lots of questions. This allows me to spread his story, make new friends and promote motorcycle awareness. I have friends

Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

who don’t ride and admitted not looking out for bikes while driving who now tell me how they pay more attention and yield to bikes or even follow bikes to keep others from cutting them off. This means a lot to me. It may be a small difference but its a start. R.I.P. James “Slab” Bragg 12-25-63 to 5-17-07

Protect Against Heartworms By: Marli, Santee Chrome Crew I don’t get paid to ride my motorcycle, so like most folks, I also have a day job, gotta keep gas in the scoot. After chatting with RubyRed one afternoon and sharing a little about my work (w/ Columbia Animal Shelter), she asked if I would put together a few quick tips, facts, etc. for each issue about the world of animal care and control and caring for our pets. So, here we go...... #8 Heartworms…just the thought of it sounds pretty awful. After all, who wants worms in their heart? If you’ve been around dogs or owned one, then you’ve likely heard of these nasty little creatures. You may have also heard about the importance of prevention - and for good reason. Preventing heartworms is far easier and a lot less expensive than treating your dog should it become infected. Not to mention the health risks and eventual death of your dog if infected and not treated. Dogs contract heartworms from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes contract the microfilaria (very early stages of the heartworm) from other infected dogs. While in the mosquito the worm grows through two more stages. When the mosquito happens upon its next dog victim and bites, the little larvae are then deposited to complete the rest of their life cycle that can last up to 5-7 years growing up to 12 inches in length. In as little as 70 days, young adult heartworms will make their way to their new host’s heart and soon begin multiplying. As many as 250 worms

can live in a dog’s system. Once there, even just a few of them, they quickly start causing damage to artery walls. Not only in the heart, but also in the lungs. Initially there are no outward signs of heartworms, but as the problem progresses there may be signs of labored breathing and coughing. Eventually they can develop fluid build up around the heart and lungs as well. Even when there are no symptoms, the damage has started. So what should you do? If you are starting out with a puppy get them on heartworm prevention as soon as they are old enough. If you have an adult dog, have them tested annually by your veterinarian. If they already have heartworms then consult your veterinarian on the best method for treatment depending on how bad the problem is. If they are negative, get them started on prevention right away. Most preventions are monthly

doses and over the course of a year, pretty inexpensive. Well worth it when you consider the cost of treatment which can run anywhere from $300 $1000. Not doing either will eventually bring about a painful death for your dog over the course of time. If your dog is not on prevention, don’t be tricked into believing he/she seems so healthy, there’s no way it has or will ever get heartworms. With the number of mosquitoes we have, it’s only a matter of time. Heartworms are now found in all fifty states. Believe it or not, even cats, ferrets and other mammals can get heartworms, though this is pretty rare. Dogs are the natural host. So, do your pet a favor and make sure they get annual vaccinations and check ups including testing for heartworms - and get them on a prevention plan. They will thank you for looking out for their good health.

Dear Dr. DILLIGAF

ARTICLE CONTAINS CONTENT THAT MAY BE OBJECTIONABLE

Dear Dr. Dillagaf, Can you give some advice to me. I find a sitter for my small child when I go to motorcycle events that are late night or all weekend. I love kids and think at bike shows and kid friendly biker events it’s great to show your children who your brothers and sisters are and introduce them into the world of motorcycling; however, some people bring their youngens, get trashed and just let them run buckass wild, climbing all over bikes, getting burnt, scratching up paint, and just acting like white trash heathens. My friends said to let them be, but as a Mom I worry about them getting hurt and just waiting on somebody in a bad mood to snatch their parents up by the hair and explain 21 and over means just that. I was raised by bikers and my Momma would skin me when I was little for climbing on somebody else’s bike or even dreaming of throwing things even near a motorcycle. The Bug Ft. Mill, SC Bug, Crumb snatching, curtain climbing, rug rats are a joy, and raising children in the biker lifestyle is a wonderful undertaking that is necessary for the survival of all biker kind. There are rules that parents should subscribe to, one is the “sundown” rule. Look through the pages of any quality biker rag and you will see photos of things that are kid friendly until sundown. The bands, the bikes, the games are fun for all but when the sun goes down bikers like to have a different brand of fun that children shouldn’t be exposed to. I don’t care where you’re from kids shouldn’t be allowed to touch a bike that their parents don’t own. You wouldn’t let your kid climb on a Mercedes or a mint Vette, and I don’t care who you are, drunks and kids don’t mix. Not at the mall, the bar, or even grandma’s house on Christmas Eve. Look, if adults are drinking to the point of inebriation then you need to get them kids out of there. Page 46

I F YO U A R E E A S I LY O F F E N D E D T U R N T H E PA G E N O W Bikers like to show and be shown the human form in its natural habitat and the last thing one of my beautiful biker sisters wants to see before she gets on the wet t shirt contest stage is your tot in the “my daddy’s a biker” t-shirt looking at her with those where’s my milk eyes. So bring your kids to the show but teach them well and know when it’s time to go. Dear Doc, New to the Carolina’s. Just bought my first Harley. Been riding metric until my kids were grown and I could afford what I wanted. Would like to change up my stock handle bars and really like the look of apes. Any advice before I walk into the dealership with my wallet open? George R. St. Matthews, SC George, Changing over to apes is a major difference in, cosmetic, handling, and rider fatigue. They are not for everybody and you need to find out if they are for you. So put on your wife beater shirt and air out your arm pits on a borrowed bike for a weekend before you spend your hard earned on bars, risers, cables, and clamps. Glad you made the change from a practice bike to a real sled but Harleys are heavier and require more strength at lower speeds to handle so you may need a gym membership before you make this purchase. Maybe you should try some baby apes first...less bananas required.

Doc, Can’t find a decent motorhead in this state. Paid out the ass for service and they didn’t even change the air filter. Went back with a ticking sound and the guy said I didn’t have a K&N filter. Whatever, just want a honest bike shop I don’t care if I drive to the mountains or the coast. HONEST and treats me fair. Cooper, Bishopville, SC Saddle-Up & Lets-Ride

Cooper, Times aren’t what they used to be, that’s for sure. Every model year there is less and less that we can do to change and maintain or own bikes. Some metric bikes have made it impossible to change your own oil and even the dealerships count on some kid that just graduated computer school to work on our motorcycles. Until that changes, go get yourself some drag pipes to go with that KnN air filter. It won’t stop your bike from ticking but if you rev it up at every red light you come to you will sound cool and you won’t hear that irritating engine noise anymore. They say that a flathead isn’t running right unless it sounds like its chewing up nuts and bolts. Dear Dr. Dilligaf, Finally met the man of my dreams, He rides. So do I. He wants me on the back of his bike. I wanta ride my own bike. I don’t wanta scare him off being to independent I really like him, but Doc I’m already ‘complete’. I know a good man is hard to find, SO IS A GOOD WOMAN. How do I handle this one? SheShe, LA, SC She She, You’re a complete woman that met the man of her dreams. Ok Ms Independent, learn how to polish chrome, make sandwiches, and fetch beer and then once you’ve won a few wet t-shirt contest we can reconsider you for the title of “complete” or were you referring to the fact that you have ten fingers and ten toes, a job, a bike, and a full set of teeth? Either way I’m happy for you love birds, but if he is the real deal then you need to learn and enjoy riding behind him just as much as you will love riding beside him. Who knows, it might just “complete” you. To submit questions for
