Statement I like to think that my work is a continuous relation of affections. Objects, everyday actions, people, intimacy, even time. The world is infinite of possible subjects and each thing essentially carries its infinity. I do not need to go far to find what can be the next movement in my practice. I find motives everywhere, in life such as it is. I can start a sculpture with my pillow‌ If a tea-cup crashes it can be investigated. How does it sound? What can I do with these smithereens? I can do something with it through painting, video or any media that I find adequate, even as a teacher in the classroom. Often, I see my work as a piece between delicacy and intensity, silence and colorful stimulation. Maybe, through my work, I want to be closer and closer to people and things around. Each piece that I produce or occasion that I propose is a unique experience that I dedicate myself and that I try to live as deeply as possible. This is the sense that I seek to share with each person who meets my work. May those pieces and events be singular experiences for other people. Let’s look for joy!

About the project Fica, vai ter bolo! (Stay, there will be cake!) By Luciana Solano

Virgilio Gallery presents the exhibition “Fica, vai ter bolo!“ by artist Carolina Paz. The name derives from an expression that translates into “Stay, there will be cake!”. The expression is used, in Brazil, when a guest states he is to leave the party and the host tries to make him stay further, “until cake is served”. The exhibition shows Paz’s paintings from the last two years, as well as a collaborative artwork she proposed to twenty other people. Each collaborator’s personal reason for being part of this project include, willing to feel part of the artist’s proposition, dealing with unrealised wishes through the act of painting, or just being part of a social group. Each collaborator experienced feelings of gratitude, nostalgia, self knowledge, being able to freeze the past, and revive family moments, and being able to reformulate sad or incomplete remembrances.

How to taste as an American? 2018

Collaborative Project

About the project by Krista Saunders Scenna

“How to Taste as an American?” is a Carolina Paz effort to translate her distinct Brazilian taste and sensibility to her new environment (she has been living in the U.S. for less than a year). The video installation, “Homemade” immerses the viewer into the sights and sounds of Paz recreating traditional Brazilian and American recipes with products + measurements made in the USA. During the exhibition, we asked interested visitors to leave a written “tip” for the artist answering the question “How do taste as an American?” in exchange for a free poster print from the “Homemade” video.

Installation view at Spring Break Art Show, New York, US, 2018.

Meu Canto 2017

Collaborative Project

About the project 1st edition – October 2017 RU Residency Unlimited 360 Court Street #4 Brooklyn, NY 11231

“Meu canto” in Portuguese means my sing and also my place, my own place or the place where I feel I belong. Taking my own experience as a recent expat, feeling divided between belonging to São Paulo and looking for my place in New York, this project becomes a space for all those who are attracted to the idea of projecting their voices about their places. Where do you belong? What sensations are involved? Do you have a place to call your own? Is it a room in your home or a complex metropolis? Is your own skin your place? Another person? Is a state of mind your place? A language, a smell, a taste? How to translate this by projecting your voice? Is there a song, a poem, or any text that translates this feeling? Through an online platform, I have opened an audio playlist with voices that sing, recite, declare how each participating individual stands on these issues. This playlist is a work in progress without a deadline to be completed. I look for an infinite accumulation of voices, without instruments, without effects, without editing but only voices and the background noises from where they are recorded.

Desejo Motivo 2017

Collaborative Project

About the project Carolina Paz – The desires and the motives of the other by Divino Sobral

In search of reasons to expand her research in painting, Carolina Paz put on the internet and on the facade of her former studio the following call: “Send a letter with your request, desire, subject, motive for creating an image based on your history”. Thus, the artist triggered a process of collecting stories and requests addressed to her, which resulted in a collection of letters on which she worked to create a series of works. She signed with several people an informal contract of exchange, which has agreed the exchange of a story for a painting, and established an area of relationships and intersections that, in a way, allowed the viewer to have a certain degree of participation in the genesis of painting.
