Official Newsletter of Carolinas District of Key Club Volume 1 Issue 3

The Monthly Scoop ~ July 2012 In this issue!

Unveil the magic at ICON 2012 We unveiled the magic at Key Club International Convention (ICON) 2012 in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida! For the first four days of the Carolinas District Tour, we visited the four Disney Parks with our Park Hoppers. We rode exciting rollercoasters, took silly snapshots with Disney characters, and watched thrilling firework shows and parades. But the time at the Disney parks was just the beginning of our fun and laughs. When ICON festivities began on the 4th of July, us Key Clubbers couldn’t wait to experience everything the convention had to offer. We met and befriended Key Clubbers from Districts all over the world, including Jamaica, and Barbados, and from many different States: New Jersey, Florida, Alabama, California, and Washington D.C., just to name a few.

We raised money for project eliMiNaTe during the Eliminate Dance and let loose on the dance floor during the 80’s/ Neon dance. We also voted in the House of Delegates, where the International Board members were elected into their 2012-2013 offices. The week spent at ICON 2012 was unforgettable. It showed me just how large and expansive Key Club is and the impact it has all over the world. I hope that next year many more clubbers will be able to attend ICON 2013 in Washington D.C. and have an experience like mine. Start thinking about ICON 2013 now, so you have plenty of time to plan and save. Trust me, you want to be there. You’ll never be or feel the same, and that’s truly and magically wonderful. You’ll return ON FIRE for Key Club, hypothetically speaking of course. 

KEY CLUB Carolinas District Newsletter, Division 23b

Fireworks for the First day!

So the first day of school is rapidly approaching, and you’re maybe wondering how to get your school excited about joining Key Club. There is no secret formula to adding members to your club, but there are several steps you can take and several ways to prepare for recruiting.

GROWTH IS IMPORTANT Don’t be fooled! Membership growth is very important. Getting new members to join each year produces new talent, brainpower, and manpower that can really help your club. Growth greater enables a club to raise funds for charities, projects, and service work.

SERVICE APPROACHING NEW MEMBERS A great way to get information out to prospective members is by holding an informational meeting in the beginning of the school year. Posters, flyers, school announcements, and displays at orientation meetings are wonderfully successful ways at getting the word of out and about your school. When membership becomes hard to build throughout the year, “gimmicks” are great and fun ways to get the attention of prospective members. A “gimmick,” such as a drawing for free tickets, or a social gathering, such as a swim party, get members and prospective members mingling, having fun, and learning about Key Club.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVES Membership drives can be very successful in recruiting new members for you club. Here are some suggestions if you decide to hold a drive:  Establish goals.  Advertise.  Be organized.  Get help from outside sources. o You can contact me. Maybe a district officer would be available to speak  Arrange for transportation. o Assign upperclassman to a transportation committee to help out members who can’t make it on their own to events and meetings.  Invite students to join.  Assign duties to new members. o Make new members feel useful and needed without over-doing it.  The club structure.

*Key Club Leaders… 

   

Show your members the BENEFITS AND EXPECTATIONS from membership. Are FRIENDLY AND GENUINE with all club members. Ask for HELP. Remember to lead is to SERVE. Recognize and make a big deal out of little VICTORIES. Encourage CREATIVITY to promote new ideas. Know they must EARN RESPECT. LISTEN before they speak. Take OCCASIONAL BREAKS from projects to relax. ADMIT when they’re wrong.

LEADERSHIP     

Ponder this thought: *What are the qualities and characteristics of a great leader? What are my own strengths? How will I improve my leadership skills this year? How will I help others improve their leadership skills this year? Elected or appointed positions in your club don’t necessarily make you a leader. You are a leader through your service, and people recognize this. Just because you are or aren’t an officer for your club doesn’t mean you can’t be a wonderful leader for members in your club, students in your school, or people in your community. Get to it and Good luck! *Key Club Leadership Handbook

Words for the wise... in the spirit of Disney “No-one has ever become poor by giving.” Anne Frank “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” Mother Theresa “If the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall, then I think we’d see the beauty there and stand staring in awe.” Bright Eyes by Bowl of Oranges “Remember if you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of your arm… As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” Audrey Hepburn

“Take it from an old spectator. Life’s not a spectator sport. If watching is all you’re going to do, then you’re going to watch your life go by without you.” The Hunchback of Notre Dame “Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be. And kind, and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special is he’ll never give up on you… ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.” Andy, Toy Story 3 “You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll learn things you never knew you knew.” Pocahontas

Congratulations on all your club progress, growth and accomplishments during the 20112012 school year! Keep up the fantastic work and service! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
