Michael McGillis is an American artist graduated in 1989 at the Center for Creative Studies of Detroit (Michigan) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 1998, he created his first artworks that consist in permanent installations entitled “Five Needles“, in the Michigan Legacy Art Park (Thompsonville) and “Passage“ in Clark Park, in the City of Detroit. From 1998 to 2014, his career focused on sited works where landscape and the site represent the strong points. “Grommet“ (2001) in the Michigan Legacy Art Park, “Compounded Eye“ (2005) in the Shihmen Reservoir Park (Taiwan), “Wake“ (2006) in the Franconia Sculpture Park (Minnesota), and “Flow Line“ (2007) in Auvergne (France) are temporary and site specific works that distinguish for the use of paint and colorful elements into the nature. McGillis' art has been awarded worldwide from his start, beginning from the National Endowment for Arts (Detroit Focus) in 1991 and 1993 to the partecipation as a fellow in the Jerome Foundation in 2006.

Tracciare il territorio

Etching the landscape

Through the use of colour contrasts, Michael McGillis draws and defines the landscape. The relationship between the artist and nature is based on complementarity. What the landscape naturally offers him appears not to satisfy his creative mind. Therefore, he intervenes himself, interpreting and re-inventing the landscape through colours. This has led to the production of a wide range of artworks that over the years has witnessed the transformation of natural elements into a new colourful and directional entity, such as “Flow Line“ (2007): a red line etched on the territory of Auvergne in France. This “Flow Line“, made of dense willow branches planted into the ground, create an enclosed organic shape, a fence with a 250-metre circumference, barely visible on the peak of the plateau of Puy de Chambourguet, in Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise. The site-specific artwork was designed for the first edition of the cultural project “Horizons Rencontres“ in 2007.

Every year, “Horizons Rencontres“ chooses ten land artists to exhibit in the Massif du Sancy, to explore the link between art and nature with the aim of enhancing the value of the natural heritage and questioning contemporary issues related to humanity and the environment. McGillis's nature is anything but spotless. It has been processed from additions, like a graft. After accurate analysis, the artist's intervention delimits new unexpected spaces, paths and borders.
