Customer Service: Store policies on customer service vary widely. Discuss best practices, ways to handle problem situations, and the fundamentals of developing a customer service model that is right for your store. Moderator: Judith Kissner (Scout & Morgan)

Self-Publishing Options: Self-published authors require an increasing amount of attention in every bookseller’s daily operations. Certain platforms are detrimental to the indie bookseller market, but others are geared toward our needs. Ingram’s Spark program is one such self-publishing channel. Get to know Spark in this evolving world of publishing. Moderator: Nancy Rohlen (Ingram)

Used Books: Used books offer an enticing margin that can buoy new book inventory and improve your bottom line, but overcommitting to used inventory has its own risks and pitfalls. Discuss risk assessment, purchasing strategies and guidelines, and ways to determine an appropriate balance of new and used inventory for your store based on clientele, selling square footage, and average turn. Moderator: Nathan Montoya (Village Lights Bookstore)

New Bookseller Forum: The nuts and bolts of bookselling can leave you feeling overwhelmed and out of the loop. Two veteran booksellers will be available to answer anything you throw at them, from billing to staffing and rent to utilities. Discuss questions you’re too embarrassed to ask in front of a crowd with someone who’s been there. Moderators: David Enyeart (Common Good Books) and Kate Schlademan (Learned Owl)

Forms: Running a bookstore is more than a full-time job. Luckily, various forms are available to help us quickly and easily access necessary information. Computerized, paper, or online; front-end or back-end; personnel or inventory—there’s a form for everything to help keep you on track. Self-moderated

Consignment: Discuss best practices for consignment. How long should you keep consignment titles on your shelf? Should you allow any books into your store? How do you word your policies to politely decline books you don’t want? Should you charge a fee? What do you do with unsold stock? Share tips, ask questions, and find answers here. Self-moderated

Staffing: A discussion of best practices beginning with hiring and covering training, policies, and strategies for maintaining a positive work environment for your staff. Moderator: Sandra Law (Anderson’s Bookshop)

Bookstore Marketing: The brains and brawn behind Books & Whatnot invites you to discuss quick and easy ways to market your bookstore in five minutes a day. Learn shortcuts and tools for online and social media marketing, ways to stay organized and ahead of the game, and new strategies that can work for your store. Moderator: Beth Golay

Book Fairs: Discuss five tips to get you started down the book fair road. 1) Logistics: Who, what, where, when and why? 2) How to think outside the box about who you can partner with. 3) What does the bookkeeping look like? 4) Where will you store these extra books? 5) How can Edelweiss help? Self-moderated

Why should you make friends with your small presses?: Independent bookstores and independent publishers are kindred spirits, but often our models don’t align. Distribution and pricing constraints can make it difficult to stock as many indie press titles as we’d like. How can these like-minded factions strengthen their relationship so publishers are supporting brick-and-mortar stores, and our customers aren’t forced to turn to their devices to buy the books they know they want? Moderators: Steve Semken (Ice Cube Press), Bruce Miller (Miller Book Trade Marketing), and David Unowksy (Subtext)
