Statement of Intent

ARCH 402 - CBDS

rchitecture is a functional part of our lives. Design is not just a process but a way I choose to live my life. Finding creative solutions to complex problems in design is similar to how one might approach any organizational challenge. What makes architecture interesting to me is that it is an art form that relates to people personally and socially. My focus is inspired by many different mediums. I find that my appreciation for art, music, and film stimulates creativity and aids in my ability to abstractly translate concepts to the built environment. I have included inspirational images and quotes throughout this portfolio to further communicate my vision. As an individual, I feel It is critical to recognize the social role architecture fulfills in influencing quality of life from the past till present. Great buildings, spaces and landscapes have the ability to functionally impact our feelings, ultimately inspiring a sense of who we are as a civilization.

y intention, throughout this compilation of work, is to demonstrate my creative talents and technical abilities within the Pre-Design, Schematic Design, and Design Development phases. My primary purpose is to document the academic work I’ve completed at the junior college level, concurrently striving to convey the integrity of my personal design philosophies.

CONCEPT the “slow food” concept for the bercy culinary institute was concieved upon first arrival on the site. the ancient old growth tree (as seen above) flank the old stone paths where rail tracks remain visible and intact within the paving stones, as a remembrance of the wine tade history of the site. The process and development of the bercy project was driven by the original concept. To respond to the social and historical onnections to food, art, and culture, already present on the site. Preservation of the existing trees and pavings is a fundamentally important part of the slow food concept for parc bercy culinary institute.

SPRING 2009

Additionally, during the pre-design phase our team took notice of the alarmingly low literacy rate of 43.2% (of which 50.3% Male, 35% Female). Because of this statistic, our team chose to elevate the Library and Learning center program elements by placing them at the termination point of the rectalinear “GREAT” plaza open gathering Space.

ARCH - 302

This urban design studio emphasised sensitivity to the needs of a foreign culture. The Capital City of Bangladesh, Chittagong, in South East Asia is a densely populated city with very little public space for the people to “breath”.

“Fleetguard Factory Analysis”

Analysis of a notable structure, detail, and redesign of a structure. Fleetguard Factory - by Richard Rogers was chosen by our team who included CARRIE KRAMER, STEVE FOSTER & FEDOR TEREKINE

8 WEEKS

CONCEPT Redesign analysis included structural diagraming for sheer moment and deflection. The redesign implemented by our team kept the basic steel and cable construction utilized in the fleetguard factory by Richard Rogers. however modified the spacing of the bay’s and implemented additional cross cable supports on the top of the structure.

The design has a non-denominational inspiration. The stone base of the building speaks to the historic nature of the site, reflecting the “Old Stone House” located just north of the site on M Street, NW.

“The Pavilion”

The design of a pavilion and site to be integrated together with a central concept. Project includes site, covered and semicovered spaces, as well as the use of transparant, translucent, and opaque surfaces.

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” -SIR ISAAC NEWTON

4 WEEKS

CONCEPT I’ve always been fascinated by Bridge Design and Technology. Through the necessity created by human need (to traverse from one place to the next) construction materials and methods have evolved to meet the ever increasing demands of society. Many contemporary buildings and structures we find to be “wild” and unimaginable have been made possible due to advancements in bridge design. My pavilion design employs a concrete outer structure that creates an orb around the space (which houses a sculptural art piece as it’s center focal point). A reinforced concrete ramp ascends the space and is supported by steel cables which are anchored and post-tensioned at the summit of the exterior concrete shell.

“The Baroque Cardboard Chair”

simple truss construction

SCOPE: Team Project (collaboration with Gabriela Lontos and Fajer AlQattan) to design a full scale, structurally sound (200 lb. min.) Chair that reflects the Baroque architectural period, using ONLY corrugated cardboard as material.

4 WEEKS

CONCEPT In order to highlight the Baroque period, the design implements twisted columns as leg supports, volutes as arm rests and as the decorative head of the backrest. The goal of the design is to represent the elaborate ornamentation prevalent during the Baroque period. The project required extensive historical research. During this research we discovered the Baroque period was a response to the counter-reformation of the Catholic church to restore the confidence of the people - The design is meant to resemble a thrown, symbolizing the power of the church .

“The Exploding Box”

SCOPE: Development of concept to include plans, sections, and axonometric drawings as well as three dimensional study models and final presentation model.

4 WEEKS

CONCEPT Explosion

this concept was derived from the nature of the project scope. To design a three dimensional form from an 8”X 8” X 8” cube by cutting away and adding to the volume so that the total volume of the cube does not change, only it’s shape and form.

The design reflects it’s intended con-

cept by first denting into the orignal box form, then exploding outward in a shard like projection, the pieces then fall back onto one another and create the pieces on the outer edge that rejoin. In theory, a portion of the volume being exploded would be lost in the explosion process.
