a t e l i e r VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 FALL 2021
Hello fellow appreciators of art! Since this is our first issue of the magazine, we decided that we ought to introduce ourselves and explain our vision for the future of this publication. The journey began in 2020 when, amidst the craziness of the pandemic, Art Appreciation was started as a Breaking Ground club. Since then, the club has taken on a new form, setting a new goal to create an art udent made as you flip ll edition of Letter from the Editors Scan for a History of Halloween: Table of Contents Page One........................................Table of Contents/Letter from the Editors Page Two....................................Why Horror Movies Suck/Halloween Playlist Page Three.....................................................................................Lower School Art Page Four......................................................................................Middle School Art Page Five.........................................................................................................Inktober Page Six...........................................................................................Upper School Art Page Seven.....................................................................................Upper School Art Page Eight.......................................................................................Upper School Art Page Nine........................................................................................Upper School Art Page Ten.........................................................................................Upper School Art To submit art for a future magazine issue, email: Kaitlyn Xu and Hailee Spoor @ cdsartappreciation@gmail.com 1 What to include in your submission: Photos of your artwork Your preferred name A title for each piece Your grade level

Why Horror Movies Suck

Almost everyone has watched a horror film, and almost everyone knows someone who is obsessed with them. But why? To me, horror movies are uninteresting, and pretty much all the same. They’re just easy-to-make movies that will bring in some money every halloween season. They all follow the same format too, in which a group of people find something strange or notice something suspicious, someone says that it’s not a big deal, and it of course turns out to be a very big deal. People probably die along the way, and there’s almost certainly a chase scene.

People like horror movies because they scare them, but they know they’re safe. It’s the adrenaline rush that makes the movie interesting, not the movie itself. The movie could have a terrible plot, terrible effects, and even terrible acting, but with dramatic music and a jumpscare, people will like it.

I’m not saying that every single horror movie ever is bad. Some have interesting plots, or maybe a plot twist that you actually don’t see coming from several miles away. Or sometimes, a horror movie can be so

What I am saying is that on the whole, horror movies are overdone and overrated. The plots are poor and the ideas are repeated, but somehow people still love them. Maybe it’s just not for me, or maybe it’s because I haven’t found one that actually scares me, but I just find them boring.

By Kyra Olson for some spooky songs bad that it’s good. I like the Scream franchise because it's fun to yell at the characters for making bad decisions.

About By

Every year on the last night of September, artist's everywhere bring out their pens and markers and prepare themselves. For what? Inktober! During October many people participate in this challenge by creating a drawing out of ink every day. Some people follow prompts, like the official ones posted online, while others just let their creativity flow by making whatever they want. Regardless, the art people make during Inktober is typically out of this world no matter the subject matter!
