HEAD HEAD of SCHOOL
DEAR PATRIOT NATION,
Welcome back to another record-setting year at CDS. We are truly firing on all cylinders, with almost all grades at capacity and a 96% retention rate I can’t thank you enough for your partnership Whether you are a new family or the parent of a 13-year “lifer,” we never take for granted the profound trust you have placed in us to play such a crucial role in the life of your child
That sense of purpose and responsibility energizes every member of the CDS faculty and staff - we nurture entrepreneurial thinkers for a global society who are prepared and inspired to better the world We achieve that vision through offering a world-class IB curriculum, with last year’s graduates dramatically overperforming against the global average while attaining admission to the top schools in the country. We offer unmatched opportunities for real global citizenship through exploration as our students and faculty traveled just this summer everywhere from Romania to Germany to Japan to London. We provide real-world entrepreneurial opportunities, honing the design and innovation skills that are so key to future success Most importantly, we do all of that in a community that values character just as much as achievement, and we are constantly working to help our kids be good people as well as good students
One of our north-star frameworks for our work is the IB Learner Profile, and each year we focus on a trait to help guide our programming This year, we are turning our attention to Inquiry. I remember learning that children typically ask 40,000 questions from ages two to five, starting with the “what’s” and progressing to the “why’s” and “how’s”? After age five, questions dramatically taper and eventually almost stop as students internalize the idea that adults, particularly adults at school, don’t really want them to ask the questions but rather provide the “right” answers
At CDS, we turn that paradigm on its head, encouraging our students to always question, to try new things, to fail, to learn, and to try again. We want our seniors to graduate asking as many and better questions than their fellow ECC Patriots, never forgetting to wonder, to probe, and to question.
We teach our students to present their ideas in morning openings in elementary to extended essays in upper school, but we also teach them to really listen to perspectives other than their own. We teach them to seek to understand, even in the midst of disagreement, and to avoid ossifying into too-rigidly held and unquestioned opinions If you took me up on the offer to read Adam Grant’s book Think Again, you might remember that he says, “Fostering a climate of respect, trust, and openness in which people can raise concerns and suggestions without fear of reprisal [is] the foundation of a learning culture” I am proud to say that we exemplify that learning culture at CDS. Whatever challenges come in the months ahead, I know that center will hold in how we talk to and treat each other.
I also know that some questions have no answers. We are left wondering, why? In those times, we lean on each other for support and friendship as we struggle through the heartbreak and confusion to find some peace together
It is that togetherness that truly makes our community special If there is one question I find easy to answer, it is “Why CDS”? Beyond all that I am proud of in what we accomplish academically, athletically, and artistically, I am proud of who we are as Patriot Nation
Again, thank you for your partnership and support. I look forward to another exceptional year together.
SINCERELY,
HEAD OF SCHOOL

BOARD of TRUSTEES TRUSTEES
DEAR CDS COMMUNITY,
As I reflect on the past school year and complete my sixth year as Board Chair, I am filled with immense pride in our community. Our students have excelled not only in the classroom but also on the athletics field and in the arts. Our dedicated faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to provide an exceptional educational experience We've witnessed record-breaking achievements in student retention, enrollment, and fundraising, all while our families continue to demonstrate unwavering support for CDS I would like to extend special thanks to our Head of School, Sara Rubinstein, whose thoughtful leadership has not only ensured that CDS is thriving today but has also positioned the school for a strong future.
Through my service on the Board, I have developed a deep appreciation for the crucial role your support plays in enabling CDS to fulfill its mission I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the 688 donors who contributed to Annual Giving last year. Together, we raised an impressive $1,031,786.33 through Annual Giving, The Patriot Gala, Patriot Run, restricted giving, and gifts in-kind. Collectively these efforts enhanced our world-class academic, athletic, and arts programs, while also allowing us to recruit and retain top-tier faculty A special thank you goes to the Annual Giving and Patriot Gala volunteers for their leadership in these fundraising efforts, as well as to our PTO, Booster Club, and FOPA leaders who ensure our community remains warm and welcoming
The Board of Trustees have been partnering with our administration to increase our investment in our most important resource, our faculty and staff. Our goal is to continue to attract and retain the country’s top educators to best serve our students.
Our students not only deserve the best education, but the best facilities as well To that end, we have invested in a new locker room and an upgraded weight room for our athletes We are continuing our work with HKS, a world class architecture firm, on the Master Site Plan, drawing the map for future generations of Patriots.
The Board has also finalized our investment policy for our newly formed endowment. I am grateful for their unwavering leadership, support, and commitment to financial sustainability and strategic planning and I would like to personally thank our most recent outgoing trustees Trish Brynjolfsson, Shane Facteau, and RJ Wood for their incredible contributions to the CDS community throughout their tenure We would not be where we are without their guidance and contributions We are thrilled to share that in January 2024 we welcomed incoming trustees Len Babbitt, Vanessa Bergin, Tony Coleman, Arty Giallourakis, Brandan Teague, and Justin Wilson to our Board. We look forward to their expertise and partnership as we enter into the 2024-2025 academic year.
As parents of two current students and an alumnus, my wife April and I have great respect for the extraordinary opportunities CDS has provided my children, as well as for shaping them into who they are and who they will become As parents, reflecting on last year's theme of Balance, we have seen our children learn how to excel on and off the field, follow their passion projects, and ultimately graduate college-ready We feel fortunate as a family to have had this experience and know it has been enhanced by the time, talents, and treasure of the entire Patriot Nation.
I wish you and your family the very best for the school year ahead, and, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I offer my sincere thanks for all that you do to support CDS
ALL THE BEST,

to define and exemplify what it means to be an IB school, we shift our focus from last year's theme of balance to this year's emphasis on cultivating a community of inquirers At CDS our students have the opportunity to embody the spirit of inquiry from our early years program through graduation, and our faculty and staff are offered a multitude of avenues to increase their knowledge and explore ways they can enhance the student experience.
An inquirer is defined as someone who by nature, nurtures their curiosity. It is often in their character to enjoy developing skills and seize various possibilities to acquire knowledge beyond the classroom At CDS, we learn independently and collaboratively, cultivating our ability to be inquirers through various projects and activities, from science experiments to historical investigations, from camping trips to traveling to the other side of the globe We are constantly seeking creative and culturally diverse experiences to incorporate into our lives and studies
WE ARE
uirers
.Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore topics in depth, and seek out new understanding This inquiry-based learning approach nurtures their natural curiosity and encourages them to stay engaged in their studies Additionally, students can enrich their academic journey through diverse and ever-expanding extracurriculars that push the boundaries of conventional learning.
Faculty and staff are given opportunities for high quality professional development that encourages critical thinking, self-reflection, and dedication to lifelong learning and continuous improvement. They are awarded innovative and diverse educational frameworks and tools, encouraged to continue their education and training, and can travel through exchange programs, all offered to better expand their horizons and best serve our school community.
As we begin the 2024-2025 academic year, balancing all the opportunities afforded to us, we will continue to share with our community the things we have done as inquirers that have inspired growth and change. By fostering inquiring minds, CDS is setting the stage for lifelong learning and global citizenship. We are not just learners; we are thinkers, communicators, and compassionate individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world

Celebrating Decades of Supporting CDS
An Interview with Erma Ruffkess
HOW ARE YOU CONNECTED TO THE CDS COMMUNITY?
My connection with CDS began in the 198485 school year when I developed and taught the first kindergarten class at CDS My teaching career at CDS ended after that first year with the birth of my second son, Ross, who is now a CDS parent! In 2002 my good friend, Mary Kanter, who had become Head of School at CDS, coaxed me back to CDS to be the first Director of Marketing It was not a hard sell I had always believed in the child-centered philosophy of CDS
In 2014, I became a CDS grandparent when my first grandchild enrolled in the Infant Care Program for CDS employees I went on to become the Director of Communications and Assistant to the Head of School. During my time at CDS, I also served on many committees, coordinating reaccreditation efforts, high school graduations, senior honoring events, auctions, and galas I am now retired as an employee of CDS and my husband, Skip, and I are the proud grandparents of two CDS Patriots, Madelyn ‘32, and Ariella ’35.
WHAT MADE
YOU
DECIDE TO GIVE BACK TO CDS?
Philanthropy is a core value for our family. It was not a difficult decision to give back to CDS We believe in CDS and want to be invested in its future
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF GIVING BACK TO THE CDS
COMMUNITY?
We love being part of the CDS community and look forward to attending our granddaughters’ activities, of course! As members of FOPA and Boosters we also enjoy going to theatre productions and athletic events.
WHAT HAVE YOU LIKED MOST ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE CDS COMMUNITY SO FAR?
The people I got to work with over the decades! The wonderful students whose passions shine bright in and out of the classrooms The dedicated and inspiring teachers who strive to make each child successful. The generous parents whose support provides the resources needed to continuously reach for higher dreams. My colleagues for 20 years, the amazing and visionary administrators and staff who drive CDS forward while maintaining a commitment to “Education with Character.”

I N T E R N A T I O N A L & ROUND SQUARE
Carrollwood Day School's affiliation with Round Square is a significant aspect of its educational framework, connecting students and staff with a diverse global network spanning over 50 countries on six continents Through this partnership, students and staff at CDS have access to a wide range of international opportunities Last school year, Patriots journeyed across Europe, Africa, and Asia, gaining valuable insight into different cultures and practices.
CDS UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS
attended the "Mountain of Science" conference this June at the International College in Iasi, Romania, following a pre-conference trip to Switzerland Under the guidance of Upper School Dean of Students Liz Eby, and Upper School Humanities Teacher and Department Chair Jen Stanley, they worked together with peers from Chile, Germany, and India The students were united by the universal language of science, and enjoyed traditional Romanian hospitality, cultural adventures, hands-on scientific workshops, and inspiring speeches by industry leaders
FOURTEEN MEMBERS OF THE VARSITY BOYS SOCCER TEAM,
along with Upper School Physical Education Teacher and Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Kelvin Jones, Upper School Physical Education Teacher and Coach Stephen DeBoskey, Team Manager and Photographer Sam Babeu, and Upper School Biology Teacher Harry Powers, spent the summer hosted by families in Poland and Germany
The group bonded with their German and Polish peers through their shared love of soccer. Immersed in their hosts' lives, they developed mutual respect for cultural differences, gained an international perspective aligned with IB principles, experienced rich historical cultures, and learned that despite their geographical location, they are forging cross-cultural friendships that will last a lifetime
CDS FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS
attended the Junior Round Square Adventure Conference, held this June in Northumberland, UK. Accompanied by Executive Assistant to the Head of School Julie Johnson, and Head of Lower School Dawn Wilson, they enjoyed a pre-conference tour of London, including sites, museums, and English cuisine before venturing to the countryside to visit castles and gardens
Our elementary students rounded off their week at the conference, themed “Finding Friends and Facing Fears” With nearly 100 students from eight countries in attendance, they learned how to apply the principles of global citizenship by creating friends with diverse backgrounds, and practiced excellence in character while facing their fears of heights, darkness, water, navigation, and fire!
LOWER SCHOOL SPANISH TEACHER, RUTH URZOLA
participated in a cross-cultural exchange in Spain with SEK International Schools As one of the top networks of IB schools worldwide, it was a perfect opportunity for her to witness an impressive combination of innovation and inclusion in a bilingual learning environment Paired with rich cultural excursions to Madrid and Barcelona, she believes that her experience embracing Spanish culture and fostering global perspectives will help her students become proficient Spanish speakers and empowered global citizens.
ALUMNA AND SECOND GRADE TEACHER, KATHARINE MOSHER
ed to Green Hills Academy in Kigali, Rwanda She facilitated a connection en her students at CDS and her GHA students via Zoom, and they nged insights about their lives on opposite sides of the world Ms Mosher’s in Africa inspired an integration of these global perspectives into the oom. As students' interest in other cultures and ecosystems grew, she singly wove her African experiences into her lessons, enriching their ng with a more dynamic and globally-focused approach
UPPER SCHOOL FRENCH TEACHER, MONIQUE OLSON
ecently embarked on a journey to Green Hills Academy in Kigali, Rwanda, as art of our inaugural Round Square teacher exchange During her visit, she ntegrated innovative tools like Kiddle for digital research and introduced tudents to reflection journals to enhance self-assessment and enrich learning xperiences. Mrs. Olson was particularly impressed by GHA's commitment to anguage proficiency and vibrant cultural celebrations. Her time in Rwanda einforced her dedication to promoting language diversity and environmental tewardship among her students at CDS
DDLE
SCHOOL COUNSELOR AND DEPARTMENT CHAIR, SARA TULLIS aborated with Japanese and English-speaking faculty during the Round are Faculty Exchange with Kansai International Academy (KIA) in Kobe, an. She focused on social-emotional support, academic and behavioral rventions, community-building activities, and IB-unit planning She also erved classes, and led lessons on conflict resolution, stress management, and nout The faculty exchange also included cultural opportunities to visit a dhist temple in Mount Koyasan, a pilgrimage to Miyajima, and visits to oshima, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo Mrs Tullis looks forward to continuing the nership with KIA and sharing her experiences with the CDS community!
UPPER SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHER, SAM GLOVER
applied her newly earned Master’s in Educational Leadership with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction during her visit to Herlufsholm IB School in Denmark Her goal was to help Danish teachers integrate IB curriculum principles into their student-centered, progressive educational methods While sharing valuable insight, she also discovered ways to enhance her teaching at CDS, exemplifying the values of being both a Patriot and an Inquirer.
The performing, visual, and musical arts are essential in education for nurturing creativity, fostering a spirit of inquiry, and encouraging emotional expression. At CDS, our arts programs are designed to be both comprehensive and progressive. We employ innovative teaching methods, offer a diverse range of courses, and provide enriching cultural experiences to cultivate students' artistic talents and support their growth.
Our ECC students begin their journey in the arts by exploring through play, crafts, and a variety of artistic mediums. By elementary school, students are developing their curiosities in the arts and are learning fundamental principles and foundational skills. Middle school students focus on technique and finding their artistic voice, so by the time they enter upper school, they’re prepared to master their skill and fully express their artistic vision. This progressive approach not only prepares students for success in the arts but also equips them for achievement in any path they choose.
SCAN HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR ARTS PROGRAMS!
EARLY CHILDHOOD CAMPUS: SETTING THE STAGE FOR ARTISTIC SUCCESS
At the CDS Early Childhood Campus, beginning at age two, we prioritize exploration and cultivate creative abilities. Our students display all of their art from the year at the annual ECC Art Show. From bristle block sculptures, to clay creations, to walls of beautifully painted portraits, landscapes, and abstracts, families get to delight in their children’s accomplishments while their children revel in their masterpieces.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: DEVELOPING AN INTEREST FOR THE ARTS
Our lower school arts program develops artistic inquiry through exploration of music, visual arts, and performing arts. Students build a musical foundation by learning fundamentals, notation, and world music appreciation, and explore different instruments musical styles The visual arts curriculum promotes self-expression and communication Theatrical arts students enhance their singing, dancing, and acting skills in school-wide events and performances
THE PATRIOT PLAYHOUSE:
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM AND WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
Since 2022, Carrollwood Day School has opened its theater doors to the community, thanks to our committed Middle School Theatre teacher, Julie Nelson Students from CDS and all over Tampa Bay have the opportunity to perform in two full theatrical productions during the school year, and one during the summer Our focus on inspiring the passions of our community is paralleled through the work of the Patriot Playhouse
MIDDLE SCHOOL: DEVELOPING TECHNIQUE AND EXPRESSION
Middle school students build on foundational skills with more structured, technique-focused classes. Visual Arts students express themselves through drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking, while developing studio habits and creative goals Music students enhance their skills in band, orchestra, or guitar Theatre students can join the Junior Thespian troupe, compete in monologues, acting scenes, musicals, and technical design, and perform in middle school productions
UPPER SCHOOL: MASTERING AND SHOWCASING TALENT
Upper school arts students cultivate advanced techniques and personal growth through specialized courses and opportunities for exhibitions, performances, and competitions. The visual arts curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and the integration of art history. Musicians can participate in diverse ensembles, including the drum line, spirit band, and guitar or chamber ensembles, while theatre students can join the International Thespian Society Troupe to refine their skills and compete for prestigious awards
The EVOLUTION
At Carrollwood Day School, we are dedicated to fostering good health and active lifestyles as integral components of student development Our athletics program, like our arts program, emphasizes the importance of progression. Students develop their athletic abilities and understanding of sports over time, while enjoying a supportive and inclusive environment.
Starting in the Early Childhood Center, students engage in outdoor play, learning the importance of playing cooperatively and respectfully with one another As they advance to elementary school, they begin to appreciate the value of teamwork and the joy of participating in sports for fun As students move into middle school, they have the opportunity to focus on growing their skills and team building, with an introduction to competitive play By upper school, students can choose to play competitively, with 80% of our students participating in athle
LOWER SCHOOL: INTRODUCING AND EXPLORIN
Athletics play a crucial role in lower school student’s developmen by introducing fundamental motor skills and basic sports concepts in an engaging and enjoyable manner. The focus is on making physical activity fun, fostering teamwork, and instilling good sportsmanship. By the time our students reach the first grade, they have the opportunity to join the pep squad, play flag football, cross country, and a number of other non-competitive sports teams

The Carrollwood Day School class of 2024 excelled in the college admission process, gaining acceptances into some of the most competitive schools both within the state of Florida as well as across the nation and the world This group exuded effort, attention to detail, and thoughtfulness throughout their admission process, which made this class a pleasure to interact with Their academic and social potential will undoubtedly make an impact at their chosen destinations, and we are thrilled to report their results from the 2023-2024 admission cycle.
As acceptance rates plummet at many institutions, our CDS seniors produced a 79% overall acceptance rate out of the 937 applications that were submitted to 233 colleges/universities. All of the seniors in the class of 2024 were admitted to at least one four-year institution, and 99% were accepted to at least one Phi Beta Kappa school, representing the highest collegiate honor society designation consisting of 290 colleges and universities. As a strategy to gain admission into many selective schools, 35% of the senior class utilized early decision I or II, a new CDS record. 69% of the students who used this application category were admitted to their first choice college or university
This year’s senior class showed incredible balance in their list making, evidenced by the fact that nearly half of the class (48%) will be attending a school outside of Florida to continue their education, with the other half of the class (52%) staying in Florida for college Eighteen states, the District of Columbia, and one international location (Spain) will have at least one member of the class of 2024
UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
In particular, our senior class had tremendous success at some of the most challenging institutions in our home state to gain acceptance The senior class had a 54% acceptance rate at the University of Miami (versus 19% overall for all applicants), a 62% acceptance rate at Florida State University (versus 23% overall for all applicants), and a 59% acceptance rate at the University of Florida (versus 21% overall for all applicants). Our senior’s exposure to the demanding International Baccalaureate (IB) program, performance in the classroom, and standardized test scores have paved the way for these impressive outcomes

ALUMNI ENGAGEMENTCoordinator
HI, EVERYONE!
My name is Carli (Gauthier) Mianne ‘16, and I am the new Alumni Engagement Coordinator at Carrollwood Day School. This is a completely new position to the school, and I am so glad we are able to have this role to give 100% to our alumni. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I embark on this journey of reconnecting with our alumni community in my new position
I have spent over half of my life at CDS, and I truly care about this community I attended CDS starting in 2006 as a third grade student and graduated in 2016. I was a very involved student athlete on the Varsity Girls Soccer Team starting in 7th grade and spent 6 years playing for the program. I was also the first female football kicker at CDS For the past 3 years, I have been teaching third grade while serving as the Head Coach for the Varsity Girls Soccer Team I have always been very involved in the CDS community, and I am excited to continue to do so.
My favorite memories at CDS include making my group of best friends that I am still close with, the Senior Patriot Buddies tradition, all the sporting events and being part of the Red Reign spirit group, and all the teachers that helped prepare me for my future

A Move to Improve provides free resources and assistance to find your loved one the perfect senior living placement As a senior living industry expert, I have helped countless families navigate the path to finding the perfect community for their aging relatives When I advocate for your family member, I promise to treat them with the same dedication and care that I would offer my own family I understand that every journey is unique, and I guide families throughout the process so they get the best outcome
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START A MOVE TO IMPROVE?
I was inspired to start my own company because I saw a need in the Aging Services industry that was not being met. The individualistic approach I take with each family is unique, and I make sure they feel heard and they receive all the information they need to make the most informed decision for their relative.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I love being able to help families make important decisions. I ask critical questions and guide conversations with prospective placements to make stressful conversations stress free for the families I support.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR FIELD?
After graduating from CDS, I attended University of North Florida. My major was Health Administration with a concentration in Aging Services, and I minored in Community Leadership. After college I went on to work in senior living in a sales, marketing, and training capacity, which inspired me to become an entrepreneur in the senior living field. My experience was unique since I was always encouraged to pursue a balanced life at CDS It prepared me for what was to come down the road as an adult Being a part of a close-knit community was the most memorable part of CDS
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CDS LIKE?
WERE THERE ANY SPECIFIC FACULTY MEMBERS THAT STOOD OUT TO YOU?
Mrs. Benedetti always used to say that I was a “Gentleman and a Scholar.” That motto has stuck with me, and continues to be an encouragement. Dr. Hallett was always honest, no matter what, and that is something I value highly to this day. Mrs. Hall was a bright light every time I stepped into her class. I remember always being happy walking through her door.

‘12 Bailey Floyd Q&A
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR CAREER PATH?
I wanted to create a job that allowed me to experience all that life has to offer while working hard along the way. I didn’t want to have to choose between a family event or celebrating a life milestone and a career that I loved. I craved the flexibility of having both. What started as a freelancing gig to help support small businesses with their public relations and social media efforts quickly grew into Bais Creative & Public Relations. Today, we are a team of five full-time employees and four contractors.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR COMPANY.
Bais Creative & Public Relations is a boutique public relations and social media agency that partners with brands locally and nationally to help elevate their online presence and earn the brand visibility that they deserve I love helping brands tell their story and make an impact I think many forget the opportunity social media provides for brands to connect directly with their community Every business has a compelling story and perspective ready to be shared, and I love building relationships with my clients to help convey these storylines in a way that resonates with their target audience Helping our client partners succeed fills my cup
I graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Communications and a minor in Sports Management. In college, I was working for the San Antonio Spurs, running stats on game nights, and assisting with pre- and postgame locker room interviews. Once I moved back to Tampa, I was with the Outback Bowl (now ReliaQuest Bowl) for a college football season before jumping into the creative agency life. Coming from a background in sports, I loved how fast-paced agency life was and the ability to partner with several different brands. I worked at a local public relations agency for four years before founding my own company in June of 2021.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES OF CDS?
I started at CDS my freshman year of high school and was super involved in sports. Track and field was my favorite by far, and I went on to run all four years in college, earning the 2015 and 2016 SCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and breaking two university records in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Our graduating class of 2012 was small, and I’m deeply grateful for the remarkable people and friends I met through CDS, many of whom I’ve grown close to over the years. I’m especially thankful to have married my high school sweetheart, Dillon Floyd.
