LETTER FROM INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL “Community is much more than belonging to something. It is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.� Brian Solis Dear CDS Families, Welcome to the 2020 Fall edition of The Talon. I think we can confidently say it will truly be a year like no other. As I think through all the twists and turns of 2020, there has been one constant for me and, I hope, for many of you--my belief in the strength and value of our CDS community. As we ended last year with car horns and caravans and our highly individualized graduation, so we begin this one with yet another innovative iteration of our CDS program--five day a week, in-person, safely orchestrated instruction combined with a uniquely flexible remote learning plan. CDS has always been about getting to know the unique and varied needs of every one of our families and students. That commitment to you, our CDS community, is reflected in every aspect of the design of this unique year. Our administrative team has been working tirelessly all summer to make sure both on-campus classes and the Adaptable Learning Program (ALP) provide your child with the exceptional CDS educational experience you deserve as well as all the benefits of participation in our Patriot Nation, whether you are student Zooming from home or someone coming to campus every day. Campus looks a little different--from 70+ new sanitizer stations, to temperature checks, to our outdoor hand-washing centers, you will see our commitment to your safety reflected in our facility. We have evaluated every place on campus and every aspect of our student program to find modifications designed to keep our students and faculty healthy and safe while still delivering on our mission. Relying on the strong partnership we

share with our families, I know we will work together to prevent as much as possible the spread of this virus on campus. As I reflect on the challenges of the past six months, from the global pandemic to unexpected changes in leadership, I am confident that we will not just make it through, but that we will thrive. Covid-19 has changed everything about the way we live, the way we learn, the way we come together. But through it all, even those months of separation, we emerged somehow more united than ever. Disruption breeds innovation. Our teachers, staff, and students rose to every challenge of distance learning, gaining a new tool kit for teaching and learning that propelled us to success in everything from college admissions to IB exam results. Maybe more importantly, we found new and more authentic ways to connect, and I think we all feel an intensified commitment to this school we love because of it. This year, we will continue to grow and learn and adapt together. Now more than ever, everyone here at CDS wants you to know how much we appreciate your trust in us as we take another step into a school year sure to challenge us in new and unexpected ways. I know we will succeed as long as we stay grounded in our shared purpose of providing authentic education with character, and building, together, a community that makes belonging matter. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Carrollwood Day School is to create entrepreneurial thinkers for a global society. We provide strong character-based education emphasizing problem-solving skills and philanthropic understanding. Our students are prepared to be world leaders using the International Baccalaureate Programmes, cutting-edge technology, creative arts, and competitive athletics. Most importantly, CDS fosters the development of the entire student not only in academics, but also ethically, emotionally, and through social experience. Our goal is to help students discover and develop their own talents and interests and use these to better the world and themselves.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT Carrollwood Day School embraces and celebrates the rich diversity of our students, employees, and families from all backgrounds. As an International Baccalaureate continuum school, CDS strives to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where each person is valued. EVERYDAY HEROES When COVID-19 forced Carrollwood Day School to finish out the 2020 school year virtually, our faculty and staff didn’t miss a beat. With very little planning time, they pivoted, created, and implemented a distance learning plan for our students, to ensure the school year ended on a positive note. From Zoom classes and home science projects to drive-by visits and constant check-ins, the Patriot Nation stayed connected. Being a part of a school that values traditions, faculty and staff sprung into action to commemorate special events. Our 1st graders and senior Patriot Buddies had a Zoom Meet Up and left sweet messages on an online message board to say goodbye and good luck. Teachers in the Lower and

Middle Schools took to their cars to deliver signs and gifts to 5th and 8th graders to commemorate their moving up to the next division. There were days of caravans to honor our seniors and a social distanced graduation to mark their unbelievable accomplishments. With the last Zoom class finished, grades entered, lockers cleaned out, and a socially distanced graduation event completed, the CDS community sighed with relief. The Patriot Nation community had finished the year strong. Parents worked with students. Students worked with teachers. And teachers made sure their students knew that they were loved and missed. To the entire Patriot Nation, you did it: Educational excellence during a pandemic.

COLLEGE COUNSELING CORNER
We are pleased to share wonderful admissions news from the Class of 2020. It was hard to say goodbye at graduation but we are buoyed by their sense of adventure, scholarship, and gritty determination to succeed. This was a special class, one that perfected the protocol and process to maneuver through the college admissions landscape and exceeded our expectations. Carrollwood Day School became the newest member inducted into the prestigious Cum Laude Society in December 2019. As many are aware, earned membership into the Cum Laude Society is rare and is the secondary equivalent to Phi Beta Kappa recognition for colleges and universities. There are almost 27,000 public, charter, and private secondary schools in the United States, only 382 institutions have earned Cum Laude Society status since 1906. This is the highest earned academic honor a secondary school can receive in the United States. Additionally, CDS is only 1 of 15 secondary schools in the United States to be both an International Baccalaureate and a Cum Laude Society secondary school member. This is rare company indeed and a tribute to faculty, staff, students, parents, and the administration that fully comprises our school community. The past three years have been transformative for Carrollwood Day School and the office of college counseling. We are inordinately proud to be associated with the forward progress and momentum of the students, as they transition into autonomous, independent, creative, and anticipatory thinkers.

Class of 2020 Highlights • 100% of the Class of 2020 were admitted and matriculated to a 4-year college • $10,990,076 in merit scholarship earned by the Class of 2020, averaging $190,922 per student • 98% of the Class of 2020 applied and was accepted to at least one Phi Beta Kappa college or university (Phi Beta Kappa designation being the ultimate hallmark of academic quality a college can earn) • 76% of the Class of 2020 will receive the Bright Futures Scholarship • 41% of the Class of 2020 will attend an out of state college • 1269 was the CDS SAT average • 10 scholar-athletes will play Division I or II athletics, representing 15% of the senior class. women’s soccer (2), women’s volleyball (1), women’s basketball (4), men’s fencing (1), men’s track & field (1), men’s baseball (1).

Where our students have been accepted over the past two years is always worthwhile to calculate how our students are doing, independent of where they matriculate. Often, the acceptance list of where students are admitted is a better indicator of how CDS and our students are perceived by colleges throughout the United States and abroad. The list exhibits a growing acceptance rate among the most competitive colleges in the United States and a diverse geographical representation of states. As the 11th annual Carrollwood Day School Patriot Run approached, the idea of doing something different was brought to the table. Thus the CDS Color Run was created. Just like in years before, this family event - including a 5k run through our beautiful campus, 1-mile Riot run with optional obstacles, and the kids dash across the football field - went off without a hitch. However this time, with a little bit more color! The day started early with runners lining up to start the 5K in their gleaming white shirts that wouldn’t stay white very long. As they proceeded through the course, volunteers in tents waited for them to spray colorful chalk-dust at them in different spots. What has become a cherished family event for the Patriot Nation was only enhanced more with the screams of delight as parents and children alike ran through the color zones. With childcare available in the Hayes Family Gymnasium during the 5k and an arts & crafts table with activities and face painting, this event is truly one for all ages. Well before the actual event, students started getting excited with different ways to participate. Leading up to the event, students in the elementary school competed in the Coaches Challenge, where the class with the highest percentage of participants got a pizza party. The Upper School cross country team volunteered as pacers. Any student volunteers at the event received a free dress day for their participation. As with all our fundraising events, we are so thankful for the sponsors who ensure the day is successful, the in-kind sponsors that provide food and drinks for our runners, and our amazing parents, students, and staff volunteers who make sure everything runs smoothly. A N N UA L R E D CA R P E T GA L A The 26th Annual Red Carpet Gala transported guests back to the Roaring 20’s on Friday, March 6, 2020. The Bryan Glazer Family JCC sparkled with elements from the 1920’s, including flapper girls, gangsters, jazz and a special VIP Speakeasy for our generous sponsors. The evening featured popular raffle drawings, exciting live and silent auction items and a delicious dinner. Following dinner, guests were treated to the amazing melodies of Felix and Fingers, our dueling piano players. Before ending the night, our auctioneer was poised in the center of the room and bidding began for the live auction, which featured 2021 Super Bowl tickets and a one-of-a-kind Buccaneer Experience, a private in-home

2019-2020 SPRING HIGHLIGHTS During the distance learning portion of our school year, our PreK 4 students were very busy! After reading different versions of There Was An Old Lady together on Zoom, they brainstormed and came up with their own There Was An Old Lady story. The PreK 4 students each picked a part of the story to illustrate and with the help of teachers Ms. Jean and Ms. Kati, created their very own book! But they weren’t done. Just a couple weeks later, they put together another book, complete with illustrations called PreK 4, I Love School at CDS. The resiliency, tenacity, and patience of these 4 and 5-year-olds to finish their illustrations while on a Zoom call was truly impressive.
Tampa projects even more spectacular is that this year’s projects were done at home during distance learning. From a Dunkin Donuts, complete with a drive-thru, to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, these 2nd graders knocked it out of the park.
With weekly assemblies put on pause at the end of the year, the Middle School student council quickly pivoted to ensure their community stayed connected during distance learning. With the goal of keeping student life as consistent as possible, this group of Middle School patriots came up with the idea of “Friday Feeling” weekly video productions. With news, sports, and a variety of things that our students were doing and creating, they showed great leadership, ingenuity, and love for their fellow classmates.
In 2nd grade at CDS learning and understanding the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities is one of the hallmark lessons in the spring. Students spend several weeks studying how people live, work, and interact within their community and around the world and for their culminating project, students chose and constructed businesses in Tampa. What makes this year’s Tiny

Both the middle and Upper School FBLA clubs had members participate in the FBLA National competition held virtually in June 2020. Aarnav C., class of 2025, placed 9th in Business Math & Financial Literacy, and Class of 2021 student, Simon H., placed 4th nationally in Entrepreneurship. With it being the inagural year of the CDS Middle School’s FBLA club and the second year for the Upper School chapter, it is with pride that CDS had 17 students place at District competitions, four students place at State competitions, and two students place at the National level.
“The opportunity to compete virtually was the very meaning of unexpected, but welcome. I took the time to choose the test I was interested in taking, and I was incredibly excited to have the chance to compete in the national competition. I studied the concepts that would appear in the test using the provided materials and took it upon myself to research more in the subject. The things I studied include but were not limited to, stocks/bonds trading, interest, financial responsibility, and economic theory. I learned to adapt to unfamiliar circumstances, as I was initially disappointed that the competitions were cancelled, and this helped me learn that when there is a will, there’s a way. FBLA has taught me many things we don’t learn in school, from basic money management to advanced economic principles. I’m confident that FBLA will help make confident, intelligent, and kind leaders, and I would encourage anyone to join it. It was an honor placing in the national competition, and I hope that I can take a thing or two from this amazing experience.” Aarnav C.

“Business has always been a passion of mine, and I took this a step further representing CDS in the FBLA NLE competition. My event was entrepreneurship and since CDS’s strong Business program was my greatest aid in preparing for this competition, it was only a matter of reviewing the textbook and notes I took. Before taking this test, I already understood business structure, human resources, finance, and marketing, so I mainly had to go over business laws. After taking a test and consulting a business for 7 minutes, I realized how important the knowledge I learnt in CDS was. The public speaking techniques I practiced in Speech and Debate and the entrepreneurial concepts I learned in Business Management significantly helped in placing. This competition has further developed my business and public speaking knowledge which will prepare me for future studies in university. I am very grateful to Mrs. Montague and Mrs. O’Neill for sponsoring this club and brining a new FBLA chapter to CDS.” Simon H.
The 2019-2020 year saw the biggest numbers for Beta club in CDS history. With over 40 members in the Upper School, CDS was also awarded the National Beta School of Distinction. Beta went on to be ranked in the top 10 nationally in Language Arts, Quiz Bowl, Service, and Technology and was announced as the #4 team in the Tampa Bay area for Relay for Life, which was held virtually.

A R T C A N S AV E T H E W O R L D ! At the Early Childhood Campus, the tradition of celebrating the arts and showcasing the work of our talented students began in 1983. Last Spring, as preschool and kindergarten class meetings, lessons, and playtimes suddenly became virtual, so did the 38th Annual CDS ECC Art Show! Parents and teachers went above and beyond to ensure these beautiful masterpieces could appear in a virtual art gallery. Continuing the art extravaganza, elementary created a virtual Spring Fling art show for grades 1-5. During our Safer at Home experience together, many of the CDS students used art as a means of expression for their thoughts and feelings, often sharing these experiences with the whole family and CDS was so proud to showcase all their unique talents. The Arts comfort, inspire, and teach in times of crisis, the Arts are needed more than ever. CDS middle and upper students were asked “How can the arts inspire a community, connect each other, and bring hope when there is so much fear, loneliness, and despair.” The answers that arose from these questions were beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring, and magical. CDS dancers, singers, visual artists, photographers, and musicians took to their devices to share their feelings through art. From Beethoven’s Minuet on the piano to the first ever virtual ensemble, the Patriot Nation made it very clear that through challenges and obstacles can come inspiration. They shared their thoughts and feelings through portfolios of coronavirus photography and a blog dedicated to the healthcare workers in our community.

CDS athletics was off to a great start to the year before everything came to an abrupt halt. Our athletes were able to have success during the Fall and Winter seasons. Both our Boys and Girls Soccer teams advanced to the Regional Finals and were one game away from advancing to the State Final Four. The Girls Basketball team was able to get over the hump by winning a State Championship in their 4th straight trip to the State Championship game. It was a thrilling overtime win that capped off great careers for our Seniors. This is the 2nd state championship in CDS history. Four of the starters on that team will continue playing in college and three signed with Division 1 schools. In all, CDS had nine athletes who signed letters of intent to continue their playing career in college.
