HEAD OF SCHOOL LETTER

SARA RUBINSTEIN

As I sit down to write this 2023 Fa am energized by the beginning of at CDS. Reflecting on last year, one of the hi for me was the launch of a new CDS tradition cross-divisional IB Art contest, where we ask artists, young and old, to use our core values competencies from the IB Learner Profile to their creative vision The results were outsta Strolling past the gallery of finalists for the prize, I was reminded why, as an English teac felt I had found home when I found myself te IB Language and Literature It is a program c on students in their whole, complex, wonder selves, valuing their character as much as th scores, with the goal of creating balanced an principled thought leaders, ready to take on complex challenges of tomorrow's world

This fall, our artists will be asked to use thei to depict the concept of balance, an importan elusive learner profile trait that we will expl school year Balance in a curriculum like IB i recognize and celebrate as we watch our stud master cross-disciplinary competencies such communication, inquiry, and entrepreneurial that are vital to their future lives As an indiv measure, balance has always been a trickier since it is so individualized--my life as a dev involved mom of four with an all-consuming I love and couldn't imagine living without m look balanced to some, but it works for me

Depending on your unique makeup, your unique mix of things that make you energized and things that drain you, your definition of balance shifts. The scales just are not balanced the same. But we all know when we feel in balance, that rightwith-the-world sense of harmony that we find when we are most content in our personal or professional lives.

I have never been at a school where I have felt so often the harmonious joy of a well-balanced community, full of a variety of parents and students with talents and interests that somehow all come together to form a balanced whole. Throughout this year, we will celebrate our scholars, our athletes, and our artists, and the joy they bring us in every area of our school life. We’ll live fully the core of our IB program, and balance our admiration for academic success with just as deep a recognition for kindness, openmindedness, and principled action. We’ll double down on our identity as a National School of Character, valuing and showing respect for each individual who forms a part of this complex and beautiful ecosystem we call a school.

Thank you, Patriot Nation, for being a part of it all, for adding your thoughts, skills, and interests to the mix. Whether a student, faculty, parent, or an alumni, I appreciate your continued support and enthusiasm for our work. We open this year with record enrollment and a true sense of shared purpose and strategic vision. With your support, we are well on our way to fulfilling our vision to build a community, prepared and inspired to better the world.

Sincerely,

"We’ll live fully the core of our IB program, and balance our admiration for academic success."

theme tyear h e of balance.

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, CDS continues to lead the way by infusing new vitality into timeless traditions. What began as a new direction for our "Annual Gala Theme" has evolved into a profound school-wide endeavor, encapsulating a powerful commitment to instilling balance across every facet of our educational journey

As our world changes quickly, finding balance becomes crucial for nurturing our diverse community We proudly present our transformative theme for the year, "Balance." A concept that harmoniously echoes the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile, which serves as the foundation of our educational philosophy.

From our youngest learners in the toddler program to our graduating class of seniors in the 12th grade, the IB Learner Profile permeates every facet of CDS life These tenets serve as guiding stars, illuminating the path towards holistic growth and fostering values that extend far beyond the confines of the classroom. As we embark on this exciting journey with our theme of the year, we weave these principles into the very fabric of our educational tapestry

embracing balance

fostering holistic growth through the IB Learner Profile

Throughout the year, we'll honor all the amazing parts of our school Our students who excel in academics, athletics, and the arts will be in the spotlight, showing how they contribute to our big picture We're particularly excited to share stories throughout the year, stories that beautifully embody our theme of "balance" that not only encompass our students, but our faculty, staff and parents.

These narratives will illustrate how our community adeptly finds equilibrium across various aspects of their lives By showcasing these tales of balance, we illuminate how our students harmoniously navigate their academic pursuits, personal growth, and their contributions to our tight-knit community

This remarkable journey is further highlighted by the resounding accolades that CDS has garnered. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated CDS community for your unwavering support Achieving the prestigious National School of Character designation is a testament to our shared commitment to character development and preparing students for positive impact.

Additionally, our acknowledgment as the 2023 People's Choice "Best of the Best" in the Private School, Grade/Middle and High School category by Tampa Bay Times aligns seamlessly with the commitment and exceptional efforts of our students, faculty, and staff

As we embark on this transformative year, marked by the theme of "Balance," let us remain united in our pursuit of harmony and growth. Our CDS community stands as a beacon of excellence, driven by the principles of the IB Learner Profile, as we continue to elevate ourselves and our students to new heights of understanding, achievement, and character.

I have spent almost 50 years of my career working in independent K-12 day schools. Even as a division head or head of school, I have always chosen to teach Upon retiring, I taught college courses, college counseling, consulting, head of school searches, and served on boards at the university and grade school levels. I care deeply about the type of schools where I have worked, where my children attended, and now, where my grandchildren go to school.

Alice and I were delighted when Lindsay and Sam chose Carrollwood Day School for our grandchildren, Sloane ‘30 and Owen ‘32.

We have observed that CDS is a student-centered school where each child is known and valued for whom they are and for whom they might become.

We believe that CDS practices “education with character. “ The faculty and staff at the school enjoy their jobs and infuse a sense of purpose and exploration for their students.

Really good institutions are families where people of all ages and backgrounds belong. Grandparents are encouraged to share in the joy of the CDS learning experience. A sense of community and service sets the best schools apart from the rest, and that is apparent at CDS

Alice and I are pleased to be able to contribute financially to CDS, as much for its mission, and for the benefits our grandchildren receive. Education is a labor-intensive business that is costly to produce. It is easy to think of education as a commodity that should produce quickly gratifying results Rather, education needs to be understood as a long-term investment that provides gains over time.

To recruit, reward, and retain talented faculty requires the gifts of many to make all things possible. As Ben Franklin wrote, "education pays the best interest."

In sum, we encourage grandparents and others to contribute to the CDS Annual Giving Program in order to support and sustain a valuable institution that benefits our children and the Tampa Bay community.

ATHLETICS Updates

In the 2022-2023 school year, CDS student-athletes achieved many significant accomplishments. The 2022 Fall season set the tone with District Championships in Volleyball (Regional Quarterfinalist), Girls Golf (State Finalist), and Boys Swim.

Soccer led the way in the winter season with the Girls finishing as District Runner-up and Regional Quarterfinalist and the Boys bringing home a District Championship and Regional Semifinalist

In the spring, we had four District Runners-up in Baseball (Regional Quarterfinalist), Beach Volleyball (Regional Quarterfinalist), Girls Tennis (Regional Qualifier) and Boys Tennis (Regional Qualifier). In Track and Field, LeighAnn Hanley became the newest CDS State Champion in the Discus.

CDS athletics had 11 seniors sign last year to compete collegiately in football, basketball, and track and field.

The phrase “small, yet mighty” was a consistent descriptor for the class of 2023 at Carrollwood Day School, and this sentiment was on full display in the college admission process with record-breaking results. Despite their size, our seventy seniors are matriculating to institutions across the country, where their dynamic personalities, multi-talented abilities, and superior academic pedigrees will surely allow for them to make an impact in higher education

As college admission becomes more competitive, we are proud to announce that of the 633 college applications submitted by the class of 2023, 84% resulted in an acceptance decision. All of the seniors in the class of 2023 were admitted to, and will attend, a four-year institution, and 97% were accepted to at least one Phi Beta Kappa institution, representing the highest collegiate honor society designation consisting of 290 colleges and universities. Additionally, our seniors utilized the binding early decision I and II application category more than any other CDS graduating class with 25% showing a willingness to identify their number one choice in the application process Of these early decision applications, 69% received an acceptance to their first choice college or university

For the first time in CDS history, more of our graduates will be attending an out-ofstate school (51%) than an in-state institution (49%), with nineteen states plus the District of Columbia represented. From an in-state vantage point, the landscape is becoming increasingly selective, which is why the results at Florida schools including the University of Miami (50% acceptance rate at CDS versus 19% overall for all applicants), the University of Florida (72% at CDS versus 23% overall), and Florida State University (71% at CDS versus 23% overall) are incredibly impressive.

Class of 2023

100% of the class of 2023 was admitted to a four-year college or university

51% of the class of 2023 will be attending an out-of-state college or university, A new school record, representing 19 states plus the District of Columbia

99% of the senior class was awarded at least one scholarship or need-based financial aid

3 students were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

10 seniors are participating in NCAA Division I, II, or III athletics (basketball, football, track and field), including the entire senior football class

ounseling

1219 was the average SAT score, and 26.38 was the average ACT score for the class of 2023

633 applications submitted to 183 colleges/universities by 70 seniors in the class of 2023

25% of the senior class utilized early decision I or II, a new school record

84% of all applications submitted for the class of 2023 yielded an acceptance decision

97% of seniors were admitted to at least one Phi Beta Kappa institution, the highest collegiate honor society consisting of 290 schools in the United States

Three of our seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as National Merit Scholars among a group of 15,000 PSAT takers across the country Our seniors were once again strong with respect to their standardized test scores, with an average SAT score of 1219 (35 testers) and a 26.38 ACT average (34 testers), an ACT average which is the second highest in school history From a scholarship perspective, 99% of our seniors received at least one scholarship or need-based financial aid In an extraordinary feat after an intensive interview process, one CDS senior was awarded the Coca-Cola Scholarship, offered to only 150 recipients from across the United States out of over 91,000 applicants. Athletically, our student-athlete population was once again robust, as nearly 15% of the senior class will participate in NCAA division I, II, or III athletics in basketball, football, and track and field This includes the entire senior football class, an outstanding accomplishment.

Since 2018, college counseling has adopted a developmental program where students as young as eighth grade are allowed to meet with a college counselor, then are assigned a college counselor in ninth grade who will help guide them through all aspects of the admission process throughout high school. The mission of the department is to gradually release valuable college admission-related information at each grade level in an effort to provide clarity to a potentially complex procedure Between the grades of eight and ten, college counseling will highlight the college counseling portion of the process, providing an introduction to the college admission process while focusing on items ranging from the value of course selection to constructing each student’s academic and social resumes. In grades eleven and twelve, the messaging shifts to college admission-related topics inclusive of college choice while compiling the most comprehensive and detailed applications possible for each student This model allows our staff to develop a relationship with each student and their family, aligning their aspirations with their best competitive fit institution–both inside and outside the classroom.

What was your experience like as a student at CDS?

Can you name a specific memorable experience you’d like to share?

I started at CDS in the 7th grade, and had a great experience throughout all of middle and high school. There are too many memories to share, but a few that come to mind are: the excitement of the week of a big football game, eating lunch outdoors and the various hijinks that would ensue, and being challenged and supported by my teachers in difficult subjects

Were you involved in any extracurricular activities?

Yes, football team captain, student council president, track and field team, and a founding member of the ping-pong "club"!

Great memories and lessons learned in all I had the privilege to be on the inaugural 11-man varsity football team, which I started on as Center in the 8th grade. I then went on to start for 55+ games straight, to which I was awarded the "unofficial" title of having the most consecutive starts in Hillsborough County.

Is there a specific faculty member that you remember stands out?

All of my teachers displayed great patience and teaching skills both in and out of the classroom

Where do you go to college? What did you earn a degree in?

I went to the University of Florida and received my bachelor's degree in Finance.

Sotiropoulos ‘24 Smith ‘13 & Jarrod

"As I've gotten older, I have realized how fortunate I was to attend CDS. CDS provided me with the knowledge and skills to set me up for success in college and in the business world."

What do you do for work?

I work for a two-person apartment development company We develop throughout Central Florida, and most days are spent on the road checking on current and upcoming job sites, or meeting with architects, engineers, and investors I currently live in Downtown Tampa and work from home the remainder of the time.

What are you passionate about in your current role?

I am very fortunate that I love every aspect of my current job. Being a two-person company means that we have to do everything ourselves, so it provides an excellent opportunity for me to learn about areas of business I may have overlooked in the past There are always a lot of small problems that arise, so it is fun coming up with creative solutions to them Development is very entrepreneurial, and it is very satisfying seeing your vision come to life

What do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy boating (a relaxing day on the water or fishing); going to workout classes; attending Bucs, Lightning, and Rays games; traveling; and trying all the new restaurants that have opened recently

Any additional comments or information you would like to share?

As I've gotten older, I have realized how fortunate I was to attend CDS CDS provided me with the knowledge and skills to set me up for success in college and in the business world I also made lifelong friends I see weekly, and it is fun to have come to the realization that we've known each other for more than half of our lives!
