CDS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Carrollwood Day School is to create entrepreneurial thinkers for a global society. We provide strong character-based education emphasizing problem-solving skills and philanthropic understanding. Our students are prepared to be world leaders using the International Baccalaureate Programmes, cutting-edge technology, creative arts, and competitive athletics. Most importantly, CDS fosters the development of the entire student not only in academics, but also ethically, emotionally, and through social experience. Our goal is to help students discover and develop their own talents and interests and use these to better the world and themselves.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

Carrollwood Day School embraces and celebrates the rich diversity of our students, employees, and families from all backgrounds. As an International Baccalaureate continuum school, CDS strives to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where each person is valued. We work to intentionally develop cross-cultural competency and appreciation of differences within all constituents. We value the influence of a wide range of experiences and perspectives in our classrooms, relationships, and interactions as we prepare our students to contribute to a diverse and interconnected world. 1

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2017 edition of The Talon. I write with deep gratitude for the generosity of all the families and friends of CDS who helped us once again set a school record with our annual giving campaign. Your generosity of giving, both financially and of your time and talents, adds immeasurably to our school and our students.

However, this publication is more than a report of giving. The 2016-2017 school year was an exceptional one for CDS in many ways. The year started with our athletes playing their first-ever home games in the Hayes Family Gymnasium and the Wagner Athletic Complex! CDS was recognized as a National School of Character for the second time, a notable tribute to our school-wide commitment to character development. Enrollment was the largest in our school’s history and our students excelled in the classrooms, on the playing fields, and at interscholastic events. I encourage you to visit our school website and read about our “Points of Pride” from 2016-2017 (www.CarrollwoodDaySchool.org/Pride). As enjoyable as it is to reflect on past accomplishments and milestones, my focus and enthusiasm are now drawn to the exciting outlook for this new school year. Two administrators leaving to become heads of other schools and the retirement of several other key individuals provided the opportunity to reorganize and expand several of our administrative teams. While we drew from our own talented faculty to fill a number of these positions, I believe we also attracted some of the best and brightest from the independent school ranks to join our administration and faculty. In just a few short weeks, they have brought great insight, broader perspectives, and contagious enthusiasm to our important work. As you know, we kept “CDS: Where Caring is Common” as our school theme this year. Our faculty and staff kicked off the year with a morning of “paying it forward” throughout the community and our upper school students spent a day during their orientation giving back to the Tampa Bay community. Our 4th-12th grade students will be inspired to become real-life heroes at a private screening of the documentary, “Look to the Sky” followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, Brett Culp. In November, we will welcome back Dr. Michele Borba to spend a day working with our faculty and staff. These are just a few of the activities to promote empathy and caring this year. While I am excited about these plans, the real thrill comes with the countless ways our students spontaneously create a culture of caring each day at CDS. In the coming year we will begin work on a comprehensive self-study in preparation for our 2018-2019 reaccreditation by SACS, FCIS, and FKC. I look forward to working closely with the division heads, IB Coordinators, and faculty to review our current curriculum and pedagogy. Our findings will inform decisions that will assure we maintain the highest standards and best practices as we strive to fulfill our school’s mission. This is a great moment in the life of CDS and exciting days are ahead. It is with a bright vision of the future that I invite you to join me in working towards our fullest potential. Best regards,

Ryan Kelly, Ed.D. Head of School

PLAYLIKEANINJA Monday, April 3, 2017, was a red ribbon day for Carrollwood Day School elementary students. After a year of fundraising and planning, Ryan Kelly, Head of School, and Trudi Buscemi, Lower School Head, cut the ribbon to open the new Challenge Course! This Challenge Course is a unique play space that is best described as ‘NFL Combine meets American Ninja Warrior’ and CDS is proud to be the first school in Florida to have a Challenge Course Playground! Developed by GameTime, this play space includes fun and interesting obstacles designed to develop speed, agility, balance, and coordination. All students are trained on the use of the challenge activities in their PE classes. We have all been watching the installation of this course over the past few weeks and I know the children are eager to begin using the equipment.
