It includes an M aerodynamic package including numerous body components (front apron with large air intakes, rear bumper with diffuser, side skirts) and high-gloss Shadow Line trim. M Sport is further distinguished by 18-inch or optional 19-inch light-alloy wheels (435i only) in M design. Inside, features such as M door sill finishers, an M leather stee-
ring wheel and an M driver’s footrest complete the atmosphere. Technical features of this package include M Sport suspension (rear-wheel drive models only) and M Sport Brakes (also a stand-alone option on all 435i Coupes and an optional upgrade on 428i Coupe when M Sport is chosen). The new BMW 4 Series Coupe will be offered as both a 428i, featuring BMW’s TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and as a 435i with the Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline six. The Corolla’s new LE Eco trim level is equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic. Valvematic offers a broader range of continuously variable valve timing (lift and phasing) to provide optimal intake valve (not on exhaust side) operation relati-
ve to engine demands. Valvematic offers more than a five-percent improvement in fuel economy and engine output (140 horsepower). The 2014 Corolla also offers improved fuel economy thanks to its advanced Continuously Variable Transmission. Corolla models equipped with CVTi-S offer the capability of either an ECO or SPORT driving mode. On the Corolla LE Eco, the ECO driving mode makes accelerator control become non-linear to suppress the vehicle’s response to choppy driving and contain acceleration from standing start to help reduce fuel consumption. The accelerator pedal’s communication is the same as Normal-mode after 50-percent throttle. In ECO mode, the air conditioning operation is controlled in the interest of efficiency with compressor power reduced. As equipped on the Corolla S, the new CVTi-S offers a SPORT mode that helps deliver a more dynamic driving experience with software tuning that alters shift points. Vehicle pricing and more details will be made available closer to launch timing, expected to be during the northern hemisphere winter.

The new Lexus IS features the sophisticated dynamism of the new Lexus spindle grille frontal design, awarding the compact sedan a combination of aggressive elegance, a more powerful road presence and a stronger brand identity. Two rear-wheel drive versions of the new IS will be available in Europe; the 2.5 litre V6 petrol engined IS 250 and the IS 300h: the first IS model to feature Lexus Hybrid Drive.
T
he new Lexus’ tight, sporting proportions are emphasised by a rising belt line which tightens to the rear of the vehicle. This not only clearly delineates the body from the cabin, but also emphasises the wide flare of the wheel arches to give the new IS a broad, powerful stance. In profile, the strong beltline creates the impression of larger rear tires and a lowered centre of gravity (at 4,665 mm overall, the all-new IS is 80 mm longer and 10 mm wider than its predecessor). The mass of the cabin appears to be concentrated rearwards, applying visual weight to the rear tires to enhance the perception of traction. A rising crease line flowing from the lower body, through the rear wheel arch and into the rear lamp clusters adds further dynamism to the sweeping elegance of the sedan’s sporting profile. he clean, elegant coupe-like lines of the new IS are further enhanced by two additional Lexus firsts; a rear wheel arch hemming treatment which allows the tyre to be placed further outboard and closer to the wheel arch, and a laser-brazed roof structure which joins the roof and side members without the need for a roof drip moulding.
Intuitive Ergonomics & Refined Comfort The IS’s all-new interior design offers drivers a focused, ergonomically ideal environment from within which to fully exploit the new Lexus sedan’s superb driving dynamics. The snug, wrap-around driving position has been inspired by the cockpit of Lexus’ race-bred LFA supercar. DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01
Ready to shock
Launched in April 2013 following five years of research and engineering development, the Detroit Electric SP:01 is a zero-emissions, limited-edition two-seat sports car and celebrates the return of the original electric car brand after an absence of over 70 years. Production of the SP:01 is restricted to 999 units and the car goes on sale in many of Detroit Electric’s target markets by end of August 2013.
E
arly in the last century the electric vehicle industry was flourishing inDetroit and Detroit Electric was at its very heart, innovating and selling more electric vehicles than any other company. By 1912 there were numerous American electric vehicle makers, with Detroit Electric both the market leader and the most prolific, going on to make around 13,000 cars –an electric vehicle production world record for the twentieth century.
T
he brand was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, with a vision to produce an electric vehicle that seamlessly integrates refined aesthetics, innovative technology, superior handling and performance. Detroit Electric’s SP:01 sports car will spearhead a diverse family of all-electric production cars, including two other high-performance models that are scheduled to enter production by end of 2014.
THE GREEN SIDE - DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01
Bold design language sets precedent for Detroit Electric family A two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, open-top sports car with a mid-mounted motor and battery pack, the SP:01 has been designed with driver satisfaction as the highest priority. The bespoke bodywork is constructed for Detroit Electric entirely of carbon fiber, by one of the world’s leading motorsport and engineering composite manufacturers, URT Group. The bodywork’s lightweight construction helps the SP:01to achieve a kerb weight of approximately 2,403lb (1,090kg), depending on specification. Styled by Detroit Electric’s Head of Design, Jerry Chung, the SP:01 utilises angular lines and sharp edges to achieve a bold yet uncluttered design (… to be honest too familiar with the Lotus Exige family design…). The one-piece front bodywork features a sharply contoured bonnet and angular front fenders as well as imposing front air-intakes to emphasise the car’s power and prowess. This theme is continued at the rear through the sculpted rear fenders, pronounced wheel arches and a rear diffuser finished in contrasting highgloss lacquered carbon fiber. Standard equipment includes a body-color hard top.
The SP:01is undeniably an electric car, adorned with Detroit Electric’s trademark ‘Tron’-effect graphic at the front of the car and on the battery. The air-intakes at either side of the nose channel cooling air to two condensers which supply conditioned air for the cabin and battery. Proud of its electric power source, the SP:01also displays its impressive battery pack through a transparent hatch on top of the rear bodywork. Buyers will be able to customise the exterior of their cars with a choice of three alloy wheel designs, optional exposed carbon-fiber trim and a choice of seven metallic and pearlescent paint finishes. These colours include: Electric Blue, Metallic Black, Lightning Silver, Pearl White, Ardent Red, Bronze Orange and Pearlescent Green. The interior of the vehicle hints at the essence of the Detroit Electric brand by combining luxurious refinement with advanced technology – highlighted through the use of carbon-fiber and specially selected leather finishes. As standard, the seats, dashboard and doors of the SPO:01 are finished in black, high-grade carbon fiber-effect leather with body-color leather inserts and contrast stitching, while the console is finished in aluminium and carbon fiber.
The SP:01’s interior design ensures that the driver remains intimately in control at all times, while creating a comfortable cabin environment for two occupants. Ease of use is enhanced by the integrated smartphone that sits at the heart of the console and controls all the car’s auxiliary functions. application to manage the complete in car infotainment system. Named ‘SAMI’ (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system), the system provides access to a wide range of functions, including music player, satellite navigation, regenerative braking adjustment, interior lighting adjust and vehicle systems status – such as the level of battery charge, range to recharge and other vehicle telemetry. It can, of course, also be used to make mobile phone calls. The inspiration does not just stop here. SAMI can also act as a remote control unit via GSM, enabling the user to locate the vehicle, turning on the climate control system and check the charge status. Performance and drivetrain Thanks to its innovative pure electric drivetrain and lightweight construction, the Detroit Electric SP:01 is one of the fastest pure-electric vehicle in volume production. It boasts a top speed of 155 mph (249km/h)and a 0-62 mph (0-100km/h)acceleration time of just 3.7 seconds.
CLIP With production limited to 999 examples, the SP:01 sports car is not subject to the full homologation process of massproduced vehicles. Detroit Electric’s first car in the modern era will be homologated under the ‘Small Series’ regulations in Europe, which are also accepted by the Japanese and Hong Kong authorities. In the USA, the regular FMVSS will be applied for, but with an application for several exceptions as is common practice with low volume vehicles. Every SP:01will come with a three year, 30,000 mile manufacturer’s warranty with an optional extension to five years and 50,000 milesfor the battery. The SP:01 will be produced at a new Detroit Electric production site in Wayne Country, Michigan. The dedicated facility will have an annual capacity of 2,500 vehicles and create over 180 manufacturing and sales-related jobs.
Powering the SP:01is an air-cooled, asynchronous AC electric motor made in the USA, which delivers impressive power of201 bhp(150 kW) @7,000 to 8,000 rpm, and instantaneous torque of 166 lb ft(225 Nm) from zero rpm. The motor has an efficiency rating of 91% – compared with a typical gasoline engine’s 40-to-45%. The electric motor sits just behind the cabin, while the battery pack is positioned between the transmission and the cabin firewall bulkhead, which is moved forwards to make the ‘engine bay’ of the SP:01more spacious. A second battery pack is located on top of the electric motor.
THE GREEN SIDE - DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01
The SP:01’s electric motor drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission which is carried over from the donor car in its original location. Thanks to the motor’s instantly available torque, the fifth and sixth gear ratios in the gearbox are redundant and are blocked off. For those wishing to explore the vehicle’s impressive top speed there is a cost option to reinstate the fifth gear, or to specify the Twinspeed automatic gearbox.
Unlike cars with expensive permanent magnet electric motors which often feature a single-speed transmission, the SP:01maximizes its less costly AC motor’s power and torque by allowing drivers to select one of four ratios. There is no need to use the clutch pedal when setting off from standstill as it is only required when swapping gears. There is also no need to depress the clutch when coming to a halt as there is no danger of stalling the motor –it simply stops. Once familiar with the SP:01, drivers will quickly realize that there is often little need to change gear. First gear is ‘good’ for town driving up to 30 mph, while also providing the driver with extremely rapid acceleration. Second will comfortably take the car to 60 mph and only above that speed are third and fourth gear required. Available as an option, the Twin speed Automatic gearbox is a two-speed powershift transmission developed specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles. It delivers all the performance advantages of a two-speed transmission (rapid acceleration and access to maximum speed) with seamless and proven shifting technology to provide an unmatched driver experience.
CLIP GEELY AND DETROIT ELECTRIC ENTER STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO CO-DEVELOP PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR CHINESE MARKET
Intelligent technology delivers a future-proof zero emissions product The Detroit Electric SP:01is fitted with two of the most advanced battery packs ever installed a production car, delivering impressive power and range. Located low down behind the cabin and also above the electric motor, the two battery units are small and light, contributing to the car’s modest kerb weight and good weight-distribution. With an impressive power rating of 37kWh, the lithium polymer batteries give the SP:01a range of 180miles (288km) when tested to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standard. The motor and the battery packs are controlled by a Power Electronic Unit mounted at the rear of the car. When used in conjunction with any charge point delivering 240V and 32A the SP:01will achieve full charge in 4.3 hours or 8.0 hours with a 13A power source. The motor bay features its own cooling system and the SP:01is fitted with a special thermal management pack developed in-house by Detroit Electric. The SP:01also has a telemetry-link to the maker so that the health of the battery packs and electric powertrain can be monitored and checked –anywhere around the world, any day and any time. The SP:01 is effectively a mobile energy unit, allowing the owner to use its stored battery energy to power not just the car but even an entire home. This home charge and discharge feature is made possible through the patented Detroit Electric home charging and power back-up unit, named ‘360 Powerback’, which enables the SP:01’s battery to not only be charged at the rate of 7.7kWh (240V@32A)but also link to the owner’s home’s electricity supply. This smart unit can also detect any power failure of the grid and provide the option to the user – via SAMI (through the GSM network) – to instruct the vehicle to restore power to the home using its store energy.
Geely Automobile Group, a prominent Chinabased global car manufacturer, and Detroit Electric Inc, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, have announced at the Shanghai Motor Show that the two companies have entered into strategic partnership to co-develop pure electric vehicles and related electric drive systems for the Chinese market. Under the terms of the partnership the first model of pure electric vehicles will go on sale under Geely’s Emgrand brand starting in 2014. After an initial three years of feasibility studies and a joint development programme, the two companies have selected Geely’s best-selling Emgrand EC7 model in the domestic Chinese market as the base vehicle on which to develop a class-leading pure electric vehicle. The EC7-based EV, called the EC7-EV, will be cobranded with a ‘Detroit Electric – Technology’ badge and sales are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2014. The vehicle will initially be sold primarily to business users and publicsector organisations, and the two companies are forecasting sales of around 3,000 units in the first 12 months, growing to 30,000 in three years’ time. A joint development and engineering team has been formed to work together in all areas of the EV powertrain solution, including electric motor, vehicle management system, advanced thermomanaged battery pack, battery management system and a twin-speed high-torque gearbox. The partnership also extends to the formulation of a joint venture company to manufacture the critical EV powertrain components and associated parts, situated close to Geely’s headquarters in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province. Geely also operates six car assembly and powertrain manufacturing plants across China. The new EC7-EV model will offer both mediumrange (with a driving range of 165km per charge) and long-range options (an approximate range of 258km per charge). Building on Detroit Electric’s performance DNA, the vehicle can deliver classleading acceleration (0-100kph acceleration under eight seconds) and a top speed exceeding 200kph. Whatever the preferred performance characteristics for the chosen chassis, the innovative Detroit Electric twin-speed high-torque gearbox is engineered to provide exceptional levels of energy efficiency.
THE GREEN SIDE - DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01
Proven sports car platform The Detroit ElectricSP:01employs a re-engineered, well-proven sports-car platform, and total vehicle weight is kept to a minimum to guarantee superior handling. Supplied to Detroit Electric as a rolling-chassis, the bonded aluminium platform requires no strengthening as it is engineered to handle up to 400 bhp. The 90.6-inch (2,300 mm) wheelbase is retained, together with the fully independent double-wishbone suspension, front and rear, with a front anti-roll bar. Both the Eibach coil springs and Bilstein damper rates are modified to suit the SP:01’s different weight distribution. Power steering is not required and the leatherrimmed steering wheel needs 2.8turnslock-tolock,for a 10.6m turning circle.
An all-disc braking system provides excellent stopping power. Front and rear, 11.3-inch (282 mm) ventilated and cross-drilled discs are used with AP (front) and Brembo (rear) calipers. ABS (Anti-lock braking) is fitted as standard. The SP:01also features variable regenerative braking, the power of which is driver-adjustable on the move. The system is designed so that in its default setting it imitates the retardation characteristics of a gasoline engine in gear when the accelerator is not applied. Drivers will be able to select braking power up to 35 kW, but the maximum power of the system is governed to avoid locking the rear wheels. MISS OF THE MONTH -足 MASTRETTA MXT
CLIP MASTRETTA CARS is a division of Tecnoidea SAPI de CV, a Mexican design and engineering consulting firm based in the Mexico City area with more than 20 years experience in the transportation industry. Tecnoidea drew upon all areas of its business to develop the MXT, which clearly demonstrates the capabilities of the company.
T
he final shape of the car was dictated by the principles of aerodynamics. The flowing line that travels along the center of the car, starting with the low nose through to the rear spoiler, channels the air in a very clean way while generating enough downforce to give the MXT agility and balance at low and high speeds. Despite the vehicle’s small dimensions, the interior is spacious enough to comfortably seat adults of up to 6’3 (1.90m). Bespoke carbon fiber seats trimmed in leather were developed to provide maximum support for the driver under high g-force generated by the Mastretta MXT when cornering, accelerating and braking.
The turbocharged 2.0 litre Duratec four cylinder engine is located behind the cockpit and in front of the rear wheels with a transaxle configuration, connected to a MTX-75 five-speed manual gearbox. With a power output of 250 bhp (186 kW ) and 250 lb/ft of torque, the powerplant is excellently suited to the MXT as it is compact and lightweight while delivering interesting levels of high performance and drivability. Despite the impressive power figures, the MXT complies with Euro 5 emissions standards, and delivers an outstanding fuel consumption average of 25 miles per gallon.

CLASSIC
The ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ is 90 years old
SINCE 1923 A SYMBOL OF BEST ALFA ROMEO CARS The 90th anniversary of the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ (green four-leaf clover), the legendary symbol that has identified some of Alfa Romeo’s sportiest models, is being celebrated this year. That refers not only to the cars which have taken to the world’s race circuits, but also to certain special production versions.
T
he origin of ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ symbol has been lost in legend, but it is interesting to note its correspondence with the flag that distinguished the aeroplanes of the “10th Caproni Bomber Squadron” in the Great War. Today the Quadrifoglio is part of the Italian Air Force’s coat of arms and at the same time remains the symbol of Alfa Romeo’s philosophy, based on the constant pursuit of excellence applied to competitions and then completely transferred to its production vehicles.
T
he ‘Quadrifoglio’ became an emblem indissolubly linked to Alfa Romeo in 1923, when Ugo Sivocci was the first to decide to race in the Targa Florio with this symbol painted on the bonnet of his ‘RL’, achieving the first of the brand’s ten victories in this prestigious competition. Victory followed a perfect race: 432 kilometres of the Madonìe Circuit (4 laps of 108 km each) at an average of 59.040 km/h, a speed which was amazing at the time, above all considering the pitfalls and roughness of the course. Alfa Romeo’s success was so clear that the other drivers of the Alfa Romeo team – including Enzo Ferrari, Antonio Ascari and Giulio Ramponi – decided to adopt the lucky ‘quadrifoglio verde’ for all other races as well. From this moment on, the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ became the symbol of Alfa Romeo race cars and was later also used on special series of production models to demonstrate the continuity between Alfa’s “touring” cars and those designed for competition.
CLASSIC - ALFA ROMEO
It was the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ that stood out against the dark red of Brilli Peri’s ‘P2’ when he
won the first “World Car Racing Championship” at Monza in 1925, the first of the five world titles that Alfa Romeo won. At the end of the 1920s, it was the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ that distinguished the Alfa Romeos built by the parent company from the Alfa Romeos with the prancing horse, managed by the “Scuderia Ferrari”, on the racetrack. In 1950 and 1951, Giuseppe “Nino” Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio drove the Alfa Romeo 158 and 159 – the celebrated “Alfettas” – to victory in the first two Formula 1 World Championships. Then, in the 1960s, the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ was the hallmark of the “ready-to-race” version of the “Giulia”, the “TI Super”, and then sat beside the blue Autodelta triangle for a number of decades, from the “GTA” to the “33” and up to the two World Championships of the “33 TT 12” (1975) and the “33 SC 12” (1977). Alfa Romeo’s racing activity carried on in the 1980s: after it returned to F1 in 1980, the successes in racing for touring cars were repeated (with the glamorous “GTV 6 2.5”) up to the resounding victory in the “DTM” series with the “155 V6 Ti” in 1993 and the long series of wins by the “156 Superturismo” (1998–2004).

roduction Alfa Romeos have also carried the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’, particularly high-performance models built from the 1960s to the 1980s. Some feature the symbol on the body, without an appearance in the official name: “Giulia TI Super”, “Giulia Sprint GT Veloce”, “1750 GT Veloce” and “Alfasud Sprint”. From the 1980s onward,
others have ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ as part of their official name, such as the “Alfasud ti Quadrifoglio Verde”, the “Sprint Quadrifoglio Verde”, the various versions of the “33 Quadrifoglio Verde”, the “75 Quadrifoglio Verde” (also in its USA version), the Spider 2.0 “Quadrifoglio Verde”, the “164 Quadrifoglio Verde” and the “145 Quadrifoglio Verde”.
CLIP The ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ returns today to the Giulietta and MiTo, the new models which have assumed a place in the tradition of the best Alfa Romeos, drawing on the heritage of dynamic performance, without compromising on efficiency, respect for the environment and convenience in everyday use. A sports tradition that lives on in the brand-new Alfa Romeo MiTo SBK Limited Edition 1.4 170 HP QV, a concentrate of technology and design derived from the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ version and produced in 200 examples.

THE LONGEST DAY IN RACING The 2013 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be remembered for the loss of Danish driver Allan Simonsen at the beginning of the race, but it will also be remembered for another incredible victory by Audi and the ninth personal success for Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen. The race was battled till the very last minutes, but if positions were taken and strenghtened in the morning for what concerns the LMP1 class, podium spots were contested throughout the entire French classic for the LMP2 and GT classes.
T
he second consecutive success with a hybrid car as well as the twelfth victory in thirteen years was one of the most difficult and hardest-fought ones for Audi. The three Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars were able to do (on average) two laps less on one tank filling than their rival Toyota TS030. The winner Audi no.2 of Tom Kristensen, LoĂŻc Duval and Allan McNish finished the race after visiting the pits 34 times while the second overall Toyota no.8 driven by Anthony Davidson, Stephane Sarrazin and Sebastien Buemi stopped in the pits 30 times. This demonstrates how fast the Audi drivers were in the difficult wet conditions registered during the entire race. The rain caused numerous incidents and a total of eleven safety car deployments. The field ran for more than five hours under ‘yellow’ while the track was cleared and repairs were performed.

Mark GenĂŠ, Lucas Di Grassi and Oliver Jarvis were able to take third place on the no. 3 Audi R-18 e-tron quattro. Bertrand Baguette, Martin Plowman and Ricardo Gonzalez took the win in the LMP2 with a Morgan Nissan car for OAK Racing. Aston Martin was the favorite for the win in the GTE Pro Class but the official team could not recover from the premature loss of Allan Simonsen, but was in any case able to dedicate him an emotional podium standing with Darren Turner , Stefan MĂźcke and Peter Dumbreck. Honours went to Marc Lieb, Richard Lietz and Romain Dumas driving a Porsche 911RSR, followed by Jorg Bergmeister, Timo Bernhard and Patrick Piletm also for Porsche. As a long-lasting tradition at Le Mans the technical verifications are held during the week prior to the 24 Hours race in the city main square. This is the occasion for fans to get close to the cars and have a little chat with the team’s mechanics and engineers. Motorsport enthusiasts can also appreciate the traditional driver’s parade. Slowing parading throught the city on historic (or brand new) cars and supercars, the race participants do not deny an autograph or a picture with the thousands of motorsport fans that once a year gather in the French town of Le Mans.

Volvo Cars to join Australian V8 Supercars Championship Volvo announced it will have an official Volvo Polestar Racing team on the grid in the V8 Supercars Championship in 2014 racing the Volvo S60. “I’m delighted to announce Volvos return to motorsport in Australia. Volvo has a rich motorsport heritage in this country, including winning Australia’s most famous race, the Bathurst 1000, 15 years ago this coming October.” said Matt Braid, Volvo Car Australia Managing Director. Volvo Car Australia will join forces with Volvo Car Group’s global motorsport partner Polestar to create a partnership with the well-renowned V8 Supercars team Garry Rogers Motorsport, and form Volvo Polestar Racing Australia to compete in the championship.
CITROËN to enter the FIA WTCC with Sebastien Loeb Citroën confirms it will be joining the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2014, therefore be entering an international track racing championship for the first time. This will be a new challenge both for Citroën Racing and for Sébastien Loeb, who will be driving one of the cars entered in the championship. Citroën Racing’s entry into the world of track racing will coincide with the introduction of a new generation of cars: “Competing in a category for the first time, starting from scratch, gives our division a superb challenge,” confirmed Yves Matton, Citroën Racing Team Principal. “Having said that, we will be able to re-use a large part of our existing expertise, starting with the DS3 WRC’s 1.6-litre direct injection turbo engine.”
New single-seater racing championship presented Renault and the British Automobile Racing Club are bringing true junior single-seater racing back to British shores with the announcement of a brand new category for the 2014 season: the Formula Renault UK 1.6 Championship. Featuring the all-carbon Signatech chassis, which is raced across Europe in the Formula Renault 1.6 NEC and Nordic series plus the French Auto Sport Academy series, the new championship is aimed at drivers between 16 and 19-years-of-age. The car itself, which is powered by a normally-aspirated 1.6-litre, 140hp Renault engine taken from the Twingo Renaultsport 133 road car, has been designed as the perfect step between the world of karting and the next level of single-seater racing. Championship Manager Simon North said: “Not since the 1990s has there been a strong, truly ‘junior’ formula in UK motorsport. But we’re not just introducing another car and another championship,
we’re bringing a different direction, with fully linked programmes, which enable drivers to have maximum focus on their education at the same time as setting off on the path towards a professional motor racing career.”
Nissan ZEOD RC tests electric technologies
Nissan’s innovative ZEOD RC is the world’s fastest electric racing car that will reach speeds of more than 300km/h with electric technology at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car) was presented in Le Mans but will make its race debut at next year’s 24 Hour race. Run as a Nissan / Nismo full factory international program with input from Japan, Europe and the US, the Nissan ZEOD RC design team is headed by Ben Bowlby who has been newly-appointed as Nissan’s Director of Motorsport Innovation and previously worked on the Nissan DeltaWing program in 2012. “The ZEOD RC program is designed to develop multiple technologies to evaluate how they could be used for a
future LM P1 class return of Nissan at the Le Mans 24 Hour. There are multiple options we are investigating. A Zero Emission on Demand option where the driver can switch between electric and petrol-powered drive is a future direction for road cars, so that will be tested in addition to pure electric power and other new technologies that we still have under development.” said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President and Executive Committee member at Nissan Motor Company Limited. The Nissan ZEOD RC will make its testing debut in these upcoming months.

Artists turn Volvo XC60 into work of art For the third consecutive year, Volvo Car Switzerland organised the Volvo Art Session at the central train station in Zurich, Switzerland. Both emerging and established artists took part by giving a 2014 Volvo XC60 a completely new look. This year’s theme was “Designed Around You”. On stage stood a white XC60 in front of a white dropback canvas. The international artists where invited to paint, spray and design to make their imaginations come alive. At the end of each session they created a three-dimensional work of art that only existed for a short while until the next artist painted over it. SEAT studies new electromobility solutions The SEAT Leon Verde is result of the Cenit Verde project (a research project devoted to the study and development of the technologies designed to facilitate the introduction of the electric vehicle in Spain), and has been built on the basis of the new SEAT Leon. The prototype uses the main innovations developed by the project, and is equipped with a 75 kW zero-emissions
electric motor as well as a 1.4l 90 kW internal combustion engine with a 6-speed gearbox adapted and optimised for hybrid driving. The SEAT Leon Verde has a range in electric mode of 50 kilometres thanks to an 8.8 kWh Ficosa battery, and has an integrated advanced cooling system for the optimisation of heat management. SEAT, Cobra, Endesa, Iberdrola and Red Eléctrica de España have defined a system of tariff negotiation and smart management which allows for full interaction of the vehicle with the electricity grid. Thanks to this system, the vehicle can be recharged efficiently when overall energy consumption is low. Therefore, recharging at times of energy production surplus is incentivised, and the use of renewable energy sources is encouraged. In the case of a vehicle parked for 12 hours recharge starts as soon as energy demand drops, and not immediately on plugging the vehicle into the grid. Thus the recharge manager responds to the challenge of vehicle integration into the electric system, making the most of trough demand time in a controlled fashion, flattening out the demand curve and thereby reducing the cost of the recharge, while always catering to the needs established by the user. Likewise, the system includes the possibility to carry out pre-programmed recharges for rapid or low-cost recharges.
