vehicles (a mixture of GLE, GLS and G-Class models) recently made the 65-mile journey across the Scottish Highlands, over the course of two days. The vehicles were all standard UKspecification cars, fitted with road-legal ‘mud tyres’, but with no modifications apart from the removal of side steps where fitted. Leading the expedition was the iconic GClass, which since 1979 has blended rugged go-anywhere ability and luxury. Its permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive, low-range gearbox and three fully lockable differentials ensure that it can cope in the roughest of all terrain – not least the gravel, rock, wet grass, rivers and gelatinous mud of the Highlands. It is hand-assembled in Graz, Austria, at the rate of just 15 vehicles a day. Although the GLS’s quilted leather massage seats could suggest it is more about opulence than off-roading, the Off-Road package ensures it is equally at home off the beaten track. The Off-Road package adds a centre differential lock; protective underbody panelling; a low-range gearbox; fully manual mode for the automatic transmission; special off-road programming for the ABS, ESP and 4ETS traction control; and an extra three selectable ride heights for the standard AIRMATIC air suspension. It also adds to the standard Driver Select system’s ‘Off-road’ mode with an ‘Off-road Plus’ mode for especially difficult terrain. The stylish GLE might more commonly be seen on high streets rather than the Highlands, but when also equipped with the Off-Road Package it makes light work of the most arduous of routes. Just like the GLS, the GLE managed the entire off-road route, from rocks to rivers to muddy fields.

A VISION COMES TRUE

On

November 21, at a launch event at the Saatchi Gallery in London, electric car company NextEV unveiled its brand, NIO. This visionary electric car brand will help users rediscover the ‘joyful lifestyle’ of car ownership by creating inspiring vehicles that deliver superior performance, a new benchmark for aesthetic design and unique user experiences. Additionally, the company unveiled its electric supercar, the NIO EP9, which has achieved a new lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe (see the dedicated video). On October 12th 2016, the EP9 lapped the 20.8km ‘Green Hell’ in 7m 05.12s, beating the previous EV lap record held, marking it out as the fastest electric car in the world. Additionally, on November 4th, it smashed the EV record at Circuit Paul Ricard in France, recording a time of 1m 52.78s, eclipsing the previous record of 2m 40s. With four high-performance inboard motors and four individual gearboxes, the EP9 delivers 1-MegaWatt of power, equivalent to 1,360PS. The EP9 accelerates from

0-200kph in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 313kph. With an interchangeable battery system, the EP9 is designed to be charged in 45 minutes and has a range of 427 kilometres. The carbon cockpit and chassis embodies a new approach to performance vehicle design to handle the physical demands of a car with 3G cornering capabilities, with added structural solidity and aero efficiency. The EP9 is capable of achieving 24,000 Newtons of downforce at 240kph. NextEV Founder and Chairman, William Li, said: “Today we launched our electric supercar that broke the record at the Nordschliefe. The NIO EP9 was born to push limits and is the first stage of automotive production for NIO. It is a statement of our vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities. It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles. We believe that when the car ownership experience exceeds expectations, electric vehicles will become the natural choice for everyone, leading to a more sustainable tomorrow. And with that, our vision of a blue sky will come true.”

CONCEPT LEXUS UX

inside-out

Designed by ED2, Lexus’ design centre in the South of France, the UX Concept represents a new step in the company’s design journey and a redefinition of the driving experience. A powerful reinterpretation of the Lexus design signatures, the UX Concept reflects the brand’s determination that each of its models should have a unique, stand-alone character with a strong concept behind it; here represented by the powerful, inside out design concept and deconstructed interior styling

‘INSIDE-OUT’

A

new Lexus compact crossover concept vehicle, the UX Concept, made its world debut at the 2016 Paris motor show, showcasing Lexus’ vision for a compact SUV of the future. This bold design embodies imaginative, forward-thinking technologies to provide occupants with a fully immersive experience. This sensation is generated through cockpit ergonomics which flow from the driver’s body, and innovative three-dimensional HMI technology. The vehicle also features a first design execution of a breakthrough seat technology, the Kinetic Seat Concept, designed by Lexus in response to a re-evaluation of the principles of car seat occupancy. The UX Concept is a new variety of four-seater crossover which contrasts the almost brutal appearance and real 4x4 presence of an off-roader with a low ground clearance and a coupe-like driving position, reinforcing the dynamic performance promise embedded in the compact packaging of the design. At the heart of the design lies a futuristic, ‘inside-out’ concept which creates a strong synergy between exterior and interior styling. In top view, this is most strongly represented by an X-shaped movement in the architecture from the cabin outwards and vice-versa. To the front, the fenders flow seamlessly into the cabin to form housings for e-mirror screens showing the image from door-mounted, rear facing cameras. The dashboard top sits lower than these screens to combine a decon-

‘INSIDE-OUT’

structed look with excellent forward visibility. To the rear, the bodywork again flows into the cabin, here forming the main structure of the rear seat headrests. X-shaped movement from the inside outwards is similarly reinforced through the 4x4 style emphasis of the powerful fenders, with aerodynamically-efficient wheel arch cladding adding a further dimension to the design. On board, signalled by the sharp, aggressive front fender and softer, more welcoming rear fender exterior treatment, the cabin offers two different perceptions of luxury in one volume. The front represents agile sophistication and driver engagement, the rear -styled as a welcoming, soft lounge sofa which wraps around into the rear hinged back doors- the comfort and spaciousness of a robust SUV. Linked both by a central axis console element which floats the full length of the cabin and the visual transparency of a unique front seat design, front and rear space differences are further reinforced by the interior colour scheme. The front is dark, to communicate a premium, driver-focused environment, whilst the rear is light and far brighter to create an attractive, welcoming space. The UX Concept highlights Lexus’ intention to attract an ever-wider group of new, younger, ever-connected urban customers -’Urbanites’to the brand for the first time.

‘INSIDE-OUT’

‘INSIDE-OUT’

Exterior Designer Stephan Rasmussen said: “Our brief was to create a new genre of compact crossover; a vehicle that could progress the user experience and create something unique from a customer’s point of view. Inspiration came from many sources, but the main source of inspiration comes from the key phrases representing the character of the car: ‘Robust Yet Agile’ and ‘In and out styling concept’. This comes from one of the Lexus fundamentals, the ‘Yet’ philosophy. We were looking for inspiration representing the synergy of contrasting values, in architecture, fashion design or nature, with a view to fusing lightness, structural, artistic and emotional values”

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH S Sharper styling, greater potency and increased athleticism define this latest evolution of the Aston Martin Vanquich S. Central to this is the naturally-aspirated 6.0 litre V12 engine, which now produces 580bhp and enjoys sensational throttle response, thanks to a revised, freer-breathing intake system. Visually the Vanquish S can be readily distinguished by a new aerodynamic package. Fashioned from exposed carbon fibre, this revised front splitter and rear diffuser combine to deliver a meaningful reduction in frontal lift with a minimal penalty in additional drag. Combined with visually striking new quad exhaust outlets the Vanquish S has more aggressive appearance, entirely fitting for Aston Martin’s most overtly sporting GT production model.

BUICK CASCADA SPORT RED WITH DARK EFFECTS PACKAGE The new Sport Touring Cascada in Sport Red with the exclusive Dark Effects package is the second unique expression added to Buick’s convertible lineup this year. AUDI A5 AND S5 SPORTBACK The 2018 A5 and S5 Sportback models mirror the coupe’s breakthrough design language, featuring a wider, flatter Singleframe grille and longer, lower hood lines that highlight the powerful engines of the new A5 family vehicles. The precise wave-design shoulder line is more pronounced than previous generations and wider wheel arches provide design cues to the vehicle’s quattro DNA. Rear horizontal design lines joined by the slim, yet sculptural three-dimension LED taillights offer a distinctly powerful look and emphasize vehicle width. Similar to the Coupe and Cabriolet

models, the A5 Sportback comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission that produces 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. AUDI Q5 The 2018 Audi Q5 applies the distinctive Audi “Q” SUV design language. The exterior has been redesigned to feature enhanced lines including a flat, coupelike roof line coupled with a strong, wave-design shoulder line and pronounced wheel arches. It also offers improved interior space compared to the previous generation, with more rear legroom and shoulder room, as well as increased cargo capacity with the second row seats folded down. The redeveloped 2.0-liter TFSI® engine generates 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque to sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, over a full second faster than its predecessor.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF & PASSAT GT CONCEPT Volkswagen is updating the Golf. The main focus of the 2017 model year is - alongside new engines, sharper design and new driver assistance systems - a completely new generation of infotainment systems. The top-of-the-range “Discover Pro system can be operated by

gesture control, a world first for the compact car segment. With its 9.2-inch screen it forms a conceptual and visual entity with the Active Info Display, which is also new to the Golf. More than 20 design changes from the standard Passat mark the GT as a unique, from the black honeycomb grille insert with red accent lines that harken to those on the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the upgrades include unique bumper treatments, black window surrounds, a black roof and trunk spoiler, LED headlights, smoked taillights, a dual trapezoidal exhaust and a sport muffler. The 19-inch Tornado wheels cover red-painted brake calipers, and a 0.6-inch reduction in ride height gives the Passat GT concept a road-hugging stance. Power comes from the Volkswagen 3.6-liter FSI VR6, which makes 280 horsepower, tied to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, controlled through shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS While the Atlas grew from the CrossBlue concept first displayed in 2013, it’s much larger and more substantial in appearance than the concept. The Volkswagen design philosophy of “simplicity and precision” drove the team at every stage of the design, from the grille and standard LED headlights to the stitching in the seats. As one example, the designers integrated the LED Daytime Running Lights into the grille with a generous amount of chrome and detail for a robust look. The functionality of the seven-seat layout was paramount in the Atlas’ development, with third-row seats that do not suffer in comfort compared to the second-row location, and an easy-access system to the third row that is usable even if car seats are installed in the second row.

A Day in th A Day in the Desert

Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course of the Baja 1000 traveled in a counterclockwise direction through Mexico’s Baja California. The 854-mile course covered both sides of the peninsula and included four checkpoints and 122 viritual checkpoints. 277 total entries from 33 U.S. States and 18 other countries battled for a whole day in one of the most extreme deserts on the planet

Methodically

mastering a radically rugged course and a highly competitive field of challengers, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren put on a show with an assist from co-driver Jason Voss, driving to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory at the 49th annual SCORE Baja 1000. The victory in the Granddaddy of all Desert Races gave the veteran MacCachren a three-peat in one of the world’s toughest, roughest and longest desert races. The daring duo finished the mentally-draining, physically grueling, vehicle-destroying 854 mile race that started and finished in Ensenada in 17 hours, 12 minutes and 58 seconds while averaging a solid 49.63 miles per hour in the No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Mo-

torsports Ford F-150. In winning the iconic desert race for the third straight year, they defeated a field of 270 starters in cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads (31 of which in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks). In earning the overall victory of the SCORE Baja 1000, Rob MacCachren recorded his record 14th career SCORE Trophy Truck race win and Voss picked up his second career SCORE Trophy Truck race win. MacCachren started his tri-fecta run in the SCORE Baja 1000 in 2014 with Andy McMillin and Jason Voss as additional drivers and last year won his second straight with McMillin. MacCachren, a six-time motorsports All-America driver who now has nine SCORE Baja 1000 class wins including four overalls, started the race and drove the first 498 miles, turning over the wheel to the talented Voss to drive the rest of the way to the finish line. Racers from Mexico and Las Vegas finished second and third overall: for the second straight year, Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez of Tecate, who won last year’s SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship, finished second in the No. 1 RPM Racing Chevy Rally Truck splitting driving with his father Juan C. Lopez in a time of 17:39:45 with an average speed of 48.38 mph. Third overall in the new No. 91 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorspors Ford F-150 were Troy Herbst and Ryan Arciero, in 17:42:10 at 48.27 mph.

Rob MacCachren said: “It is a good feeling. My first overall SCORE Baja 1000 win was in 2007 to Cabo and the feeling I got winning that race was second to none. We had a flawless day with 854.50 miles of the most brutal desert in Baja. We had over 80 people down here helping us with this race. We had 11 chase trucks and four fuel stops and lots of people at home rooting us on. It was a really good day. When we were first on the road we had an alternator wire that had broken off so we had to get that fixed. That put us down for about nine minutes. After that we were fourth on the road and we started working our way back up. Around mile 475 the Riviera truck (No. 3 Mark Post) and one of the Herbst trucks (No. 91 Troy Herbst) was still in front of us but they pulled over to pit so we went on by. I gave the truck to Jason at mile 498. He was first on the road from there and just nailed it.

Mark Webber talks to a young Mark Webber

Mark Webber retired from professional motorsport at the end of the World Endurance race in Bahrain on November 19. Here the much loved Aussie, who won nine races in Formula 1 for Red Bull between 2007-2013, gives advice to his 25-year-old self, before his F1 debut, on how to handle life in the fast lane.

years will go quicker than you can ever imagine and will take you to the heights of Formula One and within one race of claiming the World Championship. It will introduce you to people and opportunities that will shape and influence you in everything you do. As you already know, even getting to Formula One has been extremely difficult; it’s already a huge change from 1997 when Aussie rugby union legend David Campese stepped in to loan you some money so you could continue racing in British Formula Three! Remember the times aged six when you used to ride your dirt bike on the farm in Australia, commentating to yourself about being in races with your heroes? And the times when go-karting with incredible dreams and ambitions of one day visiting a famous track in Eu-

rope like Silverstone or Monaco, let alone the thrill of racing on one? You will live out all of these dreams and more, with memories of racing with some of the best in the business like Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in your mind forever. Make sure you enjoy every moment. When you line up for your debut Grand Prix in Australia with Minardi in 2002, aged 25, you have it all to learn but a challenge is not something you will ever shy away from. As you become older and wiser, you will begin to realise there were times when you would have liked to have done things a bit differently but it’s all part of the learning curve and there’s no rewind button! The nerves and homesickness you felt when moving to Europe as a small fish in a big pond have already disappeared, but don’t forget the people who didn’t believe you could make it. Turn it into a positive and use it to fuel the fire.

B y M ar k t o M ar k All the difficulties are just part of the ride. Whether it is the dangerous accidents - some your fault and some not - or the ginormous challenge of learning how to beat people at the highest level consistently, embrace the task at hand and get amongst it from the start. And the biggest advice I can give to you is don’t be afraid to utilize the experts around you from the very start of your career. On the technical side, try and get more out of the resources that you have available to you at a much younger age. It is really hard to get that wisdom early, but not impossible. You will always have good relationships with so many people you work with but play to their strengths which in turn will benefit your

performance. It is really important and comes with experience but working with great people will help get the best out of you. There will be people with more talent but they will never figure out how to do this and won’t even have a career in Formula 1. Of course you won’t win every race you enter and you will have some headwind along the way which you need to deal with in the best possible way. Use every training session to squeeze everything possible out of yourself and that will be the secret to having a long career. Keep your emotions level and in check, being sensible with the absolute highs and dealing with the absolute lows in a measured way – there will regularly be both.

The last chapter of the Mark’s career has been spent with Porsche on the Endurance Championship. Webber won the World Title in 2015

Some of the best times in your career will be at Red Bull Racing. After a tough period at Williams, grab this new opportunity with both hands and make the most of the honest and open relationship with David Coulthard, who you will learn a hell of a lot from and help to build the team with while becoming great mates away from the track too. A certain mountain biking accident early on won’t help! You will be pretty second-hand and far too unfit to be hanging onto a GP drive lying in the hospital bed in 2008 after breaking your leg badly at your own charity event in Australia, but the team will stick by you. Dietrich Mateschitz will give you peace of mind and tell you Red Bull is right behind you while ensuring you have the best medical care possible which will help you return in time for the ‘09 season. His patience and loyalty is

something you will never, ever forget. You will recover and go on to get your first pole position and win your first Formula 1race in Germany in 2009 before adding a further eight victories, 12 poles and 42 podiums along the way to a grand total of 215 Grands Prix. 2010 will be a special year that, ultimately, will end in your biggest disappointment after leading the Championship by 16 points with three races to go, before losing out in the title decider in Abu Dhabi. Be very proud of the achievement though as you put yourself in contention in a lot of races and drove very well the whole year. Your teammate, Sebastian Vettel, will lead the Championship for one race and win the title – that is the way racing goes sometimes.

B y M ar k t o M ar k

Although it will be a big call when you decide to hang up your Formula 1 helmet at the end of 2013, it’s definitely the right decision especially as you will have been eyeing up something to reignite your fire after 12 years on the F1 treadmill. Perhaps you never would have imagined you’d be joining a sports car team again after Le Mans ’99 but you will sign up with the brand new Porsche LMP1 programme and will have an amazing three years. You’ll be surprised how much you enjoy sharing a car with teammates again – you’ll build some great friendships and walk away with a Drivers’ World Championship under your belt. Then, despite still feeling young and having a huge amount of knowledge and experience to draw upon, you will step away from the cockpit for the final time. You will be bowing out when you’re still driving well and enjoying it but it’s the right decision. It might sound baffling to you now but there will come a time when lap times just aren’t as important to you anymore. Lastly, and probably most importantly, don’t ever forget to treat people with respect and race fairly throughout your career. Always. The way you were brought up by your family should never change. You will want to retire without there being a single person you can’t shake hands with and say that we put it all out there and that it was all done in the correct way. It is important that all the trophies you will win and have at home have been won fairly. Don’t forget your roots, Mark, you will always be a country boy who really just loves to go racing.

CL A S S I C Veterans make their annual pilgrimage from capital to coast under glorious blue skies

A happy Sunday in aut As a crisp and chilly London was still covered by darkness, nearly 400 pioneering veteran cars, their intrepid drivers and plucky passengers gathered in Hyde Park on Sunday 6th November, waiting for daybreak to signal the start of the annual London to Brighton Run by Niccolò Gargiulo

The 1895 Peugeot was the oldest car at the start

It’s

120 years since the original Emancipation Run, which was held in 1896 to celebrate the Locomotive on the Highway Act. This raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14 mph and abolished the need for a man to walk ahead waving a red flag. It also marked 130 years since German engineer Karl Benz revealed his Patent Motorwagen, a petrol-powered three-wheeler regarded as the world’s first automobile. In his honour, this year’s Run had a German theme which was supported by Daimler Benz who entered a number of early Benz and Mercedes cars from its museum. One of these, a 1901 Benz Spider, was driven by ex-Formula 1 team owner turned TV pundit Eddie Jordan. Jordan was not the only former F1 team owner turning back the clock on the road to Brighton. Ross Brawn also completed the course in his 1904 Wilson Pilcher. After the ceremonial tearing of the red flag – performed this year by Jordan – the cars set off alongside Buckingham Palace and down the Mall before heading past Big Ben and over Westminster Bridge at the start of the journey to the coast. With the 60-mile route bathed in autumnal sunshine and lined by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic spectators, the first target for the intrepid automobilists was Crawley and The Harrods Stop at Honda Gatwick. Here their cars could be fettled while the participants enjoyed warming refreshments from the Harrods Food Halls.

While the Run is famously not a race, the Time Trial introduces a competitive element. More than 180 entrants, more than ever before, elected to take part in the Trial by attempting to keep to a strict average speed for the stretch between Crawley and Burgess Hill. The winner was Wolfgang Presinger in a 1904 Covert who covered the 13 miles at an average speed of 8.05mph compared to his 8mph target. In total 351 of the 392 starters made it to Brighton before the 4.30pm deadline to claim a coveted finishers’ medal. Appropriately in a year celebrating German cars, the first car home was the 1903 racing Mercedes driven by Chris Scott from Jersey which arrived in the sunny seaside resort shortly after 10am. With a mighty 9.2-litre engine under the bonnet delivering an impressive 60bhp, perhaps that was no surprise. The Royal Automobile Club’s Peter Read, Chairman of the Motoring Committee, said: “Once again this remarkable event – the world’s largest gathering of veteran cars and the globe’s biggest free-to-view motoring event – was a huge success, a fitting tribute to the men and machines who first put the world on wheels. The weather was glorious – if a little chilly – this year, and that was a real bonus for the spectators, the participants taking part not to mention the volunteer marshals who, fittingly, make sure it runs like a well-oiled machine. Here’s to next year when the Run will be held on 5th November, ahead of Bonfire Night.”

The Run marked the end of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week – a seven-day celebration of motoring, which included an art exhibition, motoring lectures, a motoring forum and a motoring book awards evening. The penultimate event in the week was the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, on Saturday 5th November, which turned London’s flagship shopping street into a motoring showcase that put the spotlight on veterans and moderns alike and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors.

One

of the most important pieces of American automotive history, the Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle 1 (CERV 1) was developed between 1959 and 1960 by Zora Arkus-Duntov as a functional mid-engine, open-wheel, single-seat prototype racing car. It served as Duntov’s personal Corvette engineering test bed; a platform for engineers to develop and refine the Chevrolet body, chassis and suspension systems. Duntov drove the CERV 1 in demo laps at the U.S. Grand Prix in 1960, but that is as far as its racing aspirations went, due to the ban on manufacturer-sponsored racing at the time. The car was designed by Larry Shinoda and Tony Lapine, and was originally equipped with a 283ci/350hp small-block V8 weighing only 350 lbs because of the use of aluminum and magnesium engine components. The CERV 1 features a four-wheel independent suspension, 4-speed manual transmission and front disc and rear drum brakes. The steering system features a high-efficiency recirculating-ball-type steering gear of 12:1 ratio; overall steering ratio is a very fast 13.5:1. Fuel is delivered via two rubber bladder fuel cells with a total capacity of 20 gallons. Fuelinjected small-block technology was developed using this incredible car. Later, for even greater performance, Duntov refitted the CERV 1 with a 377ci (6.1 ltr.) aluminum small block, an advanced Rochester fuel-injection system, and Indy-style tires and wheels. Shinoda also redesigned the body structure for greater aerodynamics and the car recorded a top speed of 206 mph. Includes loads of paperwork and history on the car, which stands as one of the experimental landmarks of GM history.

G LO B A L N E WS The DX3 designed by Pininfarina

THE

CHINESE WAY The DX3 is a new compact SUV designed for young generations with a dynamic lifestyle. In the next 5 years, SEM will develop together with Pininfarina different types of SUVs with the goal of forming an entire family of products for China

T H E C H I N E S E WAY

The

new compact SUV DX3, the second model born from the collaboration between Pininfarina and South East Motor-SEM, recently made its debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The DX3, combining a sporty look with flowing and elegant lines typical of Pininfarina, will form the basis for the future style language of the DX series as in the next 5 years, SEM will develop together with Pininfarina different types of SUVs with the goal of forming an entire family of products for China. The DX3 is a new compact SUV designed for young generations with a dynamic lifestyle. Together with SEM Pininfarina experimented a variety of design proposals to create an innovative vision based on the values of SEM linked to the expectations of young customers. DX3’s design expresses vigor and momentum through a dynamic flow of surfaces like moving water. A powerful and muscular design with bold and generous shapes. All of these elements are blended together in a single flow, like in the artistic conception of Chinese Calligraphy, creating a design of perfect balance between vigor, sport and power. The interiors as well offer a new on board experience both exciting and vibrant. The dashboard reminds the dynamism of an aircraft through the strong identity expression of the air vents. The high precision and quality of the interior details, from the multifunctional steering wheel and aircraftstyled gearshift to the super large touch screen, offer an intuitive interaction and a joyful driving experience to the user. The result is a young and fashionable SUV that moves forward the design expression of SEM to a new level of confidence. The confidence of beauty.

T H E C H I N E S E WAY The DX 3 is the continuation of the design activities on the DX7, the first Chinese SUV with an Italian touch, presented at Auto Shanghai 2015. Thanks to Pininfarina design, the DX7 boomed winning dozens of awards, among which the Red Dot China Good Design Award and the SUV of the Year Award in 2015 as part of the “China Automotive Billboard Awards”. Since it went into production in July 2015, moreover, the DX7 exceeded for different consecutive months the target of 10,000 monthly orders, rapidly conquering the Chinese SUV market. The DX7 had already won, in his first appearance at the Guangzhou Motor Show in 2014, the prize “The most awaited local SUV brand” awarded by more than 100 media and more than 50,000 visitors. Cooperation between Pininfarina and SEM began in 2012. Following the commercial success of the DX7, South East Motor will deepen the collaboration with Pininfarina developing new quality products for Chinese consumers. At present, Pininfarina and South East Motor are already working on the next generation of new models.

To actively contribute to the success of the partnership with South East Motor is the Pininfarina Automotive Engineering Shanghai team, established in 2010 with the aim of locating a satellite design development in Shanghai, automotive strategic site for the Asian region. Today PAES is an established outpost of commercial development and design creation that, under the guidance of Federico Viganò (General Manager) and Orazio Daldosso (Design Director) and supervision from Italy of the Chief Creative Officer Fabio Filippini, can count on a multicultural team of 20 people that give the Chinese headquarters of Pininfarina a strong international character and global vision in the daily challenge to an increasingly demanding market. The 2015 data are clear: growth of the customer portfolio, 3 million euros of revenues (more than tripled compared to 2014), over 20 projects developed, 7 of which in collaboration with the Italian headquarters and 14 independently, 20 clay models and 13 models CAS made. A development which also required the expansion of the offices and the transfer to the technological hub Auto City, also in Shanghai.

T H E C H I N E S E WAY

Pininfarina was the first Italian design house to provide styling and engineering services to Chinese carmakers since 1996. Since then, Pininfarina has expanded its range of activities by developing partnerships with manufacturers like AviChina (Hafei), Chery, Changfeng, Brilliance, BAIC, JAC and others, for which commercially successful vehicles have been designed
