AUDI A8 GETS A COMPREHENSIVE UPDATE
A
udi has given its flagship, the A8, a widesweeping update. The engines are even more powerful and efficient, while new assistance systems and the innovative Matrix LED headlights provide for an added level of composure. One great strength of the big sedan is its lightweight construction. The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI with the normal wheelbase has a curb weight of just 1,830 kilograms (4,034.46 lb) – best-in-class for models with all-wheel drive. The body is made almost entirely of aluminum. The engine hood, the Singleframe grille and the front bumper are more sculptured; the lower edge of the headlight units is straight. In the German market, LED headlights are standard in all models with a V8 engine. Audi also offers optional headlights featuring Matrix LED technology, which sets new benchmarks with respect to design and technology. Audi offers the A8 on the German market with two gasoline and two diesel engines. These are the
supercharged 3.0 TFSI with 228 kW (310 hp), the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with 320 kW (435 hp), the highly efficient 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 190 kW (258 hp) and the extremely high-torque 4.2 TDI clean diesel, which produces 283 kW (385 hp) and 850 Nm (626.93 lb-ft). Performance has increased with most engines. When paired with quattro all-wheel drive, the 4.0 TFSI now accelerates the A8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds. These variants are joined by three additional models. The top-of-the-line model is the luxuriously equipped Audi A8 L W12 quattro, while the Audi A8 hybrid combines a 2.0 TFSI and electric motor to produce a system output of 180 kW (245 hp) and system torque of 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft). The new A8 comes standard with a fast and smooth-shifting, eight-speed tiptronic. The new Audi A8 is scheduled to arrive at German dealerships in November. Prices in Germany for the new Audi model start at 74,500 euros.
BMW CONCEPT X5 EDRIVE
B
MW is using the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show to present the BMW Concept X5 eDrive. Its innovative BMW eDrive technology guarantees fuel efficiency and eco-sustainability, while at the same time opening the door to speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph), a maximum range of 30 kilometres (19 miles) on electric power alone and average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp). The concept study’s BMW eDrive system consists of a four-cylinder combustion engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor which is also the work of the BMW Group. The 70 kW/95 hp motor sources its energy from a high-voltage lithiumion battery. It can be charged from any domestic power socket and has sufficient capacity to enable the car to travel up to 30 kilometres (19 miles) solely on electric power, generating zero local emissions in the process. The high-voltage battery developed for the BMW Concept X5 eDrive is mounted in a particularly crash-safe position underneath the load area, whose capacity remains virtually unchanged as a result. There is a choice of three driving modes, depending on requirements and situation – the intelligent hybrid drive option for an optimum balance between sportiness and efficiency; pure electric and therefore emission-free driving; or Save Battery mode to maintain the current battery charge.

Another element taken directly from the racing version is the removable engine hood with quickrelease system. Both the rear wing and the hood are made from carbon composite material, as are a host of other components on the Squadra Corse. It can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds and reach 200 km/h in just 10.4 seconds. Its forward thrust finally tops out at 320 Km/h. The V10 engine generates 570 hp, equivalent to 419 kW, which is fully available at 8,000 rpm. The car will have its world premiere at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

pel/Vauxhall’s ground-breaking Monza Concept, is set for its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With the Monza Concept, the designers in Brit, Mark Adams’ team introduce a new interpretation of the sculptural design that first went into production with the Insignia. Distinctive lines, high-precision design and perfect sweeping contours remain the core of the evolving design philosophy.
But a new, athletic allure demonstrates the car’s overall efficiency. “This is the next bold step along our journey into the future, but at the same time we show that we have established a consistent design in which people can build trust,” said Mark Adams, Head of Opel/ Vauxhall Design. A total of 18 LED projectors create a continuous, adaptable multi-functional display inside the car – the first car in the world to feature this. The Monza Concept is based on a modular design to allow highest-possible flexibility when selecting a propulsion system. A variety of sustainable powertrains based on increasing electrification of the automobile are available. For the Monza Concept engineers conceived an electric drive with a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) range extender – a further development of the Ampera’s pioneering technology. The new-generation threecylinder 1.0 SIDI turbo – which also makes its premiere at Frankfurt – takes over the task as range extender. But it does so with natural gas instead of petrol, further improving the car’s CO2 footprint.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER AND NEW PANAMERA GENERATION
T
he technologically pioneering Porsche 918 Spyder is celebrating its debut at this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The super sportscar with plug-in hybrid drive guarantees an impressive dynamic performance combined with the fuel consumption of a compact car. Designed from the start to be a high-performance hybrid, the 918 Spyder (presented in CARS GLOBALMAG March) boasts an unprecedented combination of
performance (offering the 887-bhp output of a super sportscar) and the virtually silent locomotion of an electric vehicle. The vehicle is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and offers an average standard fuel consumption of between 3.0 and 3.3 litres/100 km. The 918 Spyder concept also allows a combustion engine to be combined with an electric motor-based drive to further optimise the dynamic performance of the vehicle.
In setting this technological benchmark, the Porsche 918 Spyder is taking on a pioneering role similar to that of the 911 when it was unveiled fifty years ago. he new SsangYong Turismo arrives in the UK without much of a competition. At over 5 meters long and with a 3 meter wheelbase, the car is larger than a standard sized MPV such as the Ford Galaxy, Renault Grand Scenic or SEAT Alhambra, yet is a car rather than a van-derived ‘people carrier’ like the Hyundai i800, Mercedes Viano or VW Caravelle. Consequently its big interior space and flexible passenger and load carrying capability means it can carry seven adults and 875 litres of luggage, through to two adults and 3,146 litres of load space, with seven alternative passenger and load combinations to choose from. The Turismo is powered by SsangYong’s own
2.0 litre turbo charged e-XDi200 diesel engine. The engine offers maximum power of 155PS/4,000rpm and maximum torque of 360Nm/1,500-2,800rpm, and is designed to provide low end torque whatever the conditions on or off road. There’s a choice of 6-speed manual transmission and 5-speed Mercedes-Benz TTronic automatic transmission, ensuring smooth gear changing performance and quiet operation. While rear wheel drive features across the range, the top of the range EX includes selectable 4x4 with low ratio as standard. Turismo is available in five exterior colours: Wine Black, Black, Gunmetal Grey, Silver and White. Prices start from just £17,995.

VOLVO’S
CONCEPT COUPÉ REVEALS FUTURE DESIGN POSSIBILITIES
I
nspired by contemporary, progressive Scandinavian lifestyle and design as well as iconic elements from the past, the elegant new Volvo Concept Coupé is the first of a series of three concept cars that reveal the design possibilities created by the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. “The Volvo Concept Coupé is no futuristic dream car. It is designed to demonstrate the capability of our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures. Even though the all-new XC90 is an entirely different type of car, you will recognise the connection instantly when it is revealed next year,” says Thomas Ingenlath. The visual impact of the new proportions is most powerful when viewing the Volvo Concept Coupé from the side. The distance between the dashboard and the front axle is extended and the greenhouse has been moved slightly rearwards.
A low bonnet, roof, and the five-spoke, 21-inch wheels also contribute to the impression of an elegant Gran Tourer oozing effortless power. The confident stance is emphasized by a beltline that spans an elegant bow along the whole car. The Concept Coupé also features elements that echo the design of the Volvo P1800 from the 1960s. The petrol plug-in hybrid driveline in the Volvo Concept Coupé reflects Volvo Cars’ strategy to use electrification to create the most powerful versions in the new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family. This will take power figures up into V8 territory. The concept car features a two-litre high-performance Drive-E petrol engine with a supercharger and turbo. The petrol engine is teamed with an electric motor on the rear axle. This gives Volvo Concept Coupé a total output of around 400 hp and over 600 Nm of torque.

CHEVROLET CAMARO
Z/28
The 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro’s history. The new 2014 Camaro line will arrive at Chevrolet dealers later in 2013. The Camaro Z/28 is expected to be appearing at track events across the United States in spring 2014.
W
hile the new Camaro Z/28 is not intended to compete in a specific race series, it is solely focused on track capability. “We set out to make the fastest road-racing Camaro possible that was still street-legal - said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer - While the Camaro ZL1 offers exceptional performance on the street, the drag strip, and the track, the Z/28 is entirely focused on the track performance. The Z/28 will be too track-focused for most drivers, but offers road-racers one of the most capable track cars ever offered from an automaker. Like the original, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is offered only with a manual transmission. In a nod to modern convenience, air-conditioning is available, but only as an option.
FOCUS - CHEVROLET CAMARO Z/28
High-performance aerodynamics changes The 2014 Camaro represents the most significant redesign since the introduction of the fifth-generation Camaro as a concept car in 2006. Compared to the previous model, the design represents a strong visual change front and rear, resulting in a wider, lower, more contemporary appearance. The front fascia features a wider lower opening, and a narrower upper opening that also updates the appearance of the iconic “halo ring” HID headlamps on the Camaro RS package. The functional hood vent on the Camaro SS helps reduce heat and aerodynamic lift. Moving to the rear, the sculptural decklid, horizontal lamps and diffuser complete the powerful statement. The Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamic package designed to produce downforce at track speeds. At the front, the Z/28 features a large splitter, connected to an underbody panel that further reduces lift. In profile, the Z/28 features fender flares over the front and rear wheels, as well as extended rocker panels that contribute to
aerodynamic stability. An aggressive rear spoiler and functional diffuser complete the aerodynamic package. On the interior, the Camaro Z/28 features trim in a distinctive, matte-metallic finish named Octane, the ZL1 flat-bottomed steering wheel, and standard Recaro seats with microfiber suede inserts. The new seats feature aggressive bolsters for high-performance driving, as well as seat cutouts inspired by the five-point harnesses found on racing seats. To save weight, both front seats incorporate manual adjustment. The rear seats of the Z/28 have also been modified for weight reduction. A total of nine pounds (four kilograms) was saved by eliminating the seat-back pass through, as well as using high-density foam in place of the rigid structure of the seat back and steel mesh of the seat bottom. 7.0lt. normally asdpirated: the heart of the Z/28 The heart of the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is the lighter, naturally aspirated 7.0L LS7 first introduced in the Corvette Z06.
“The LS7 is ideal for road racing because it delivers amazing performance in a compact, lightweight package - said Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer and program manager - the broad torque curve and high redline of the LS7 mean fewer shifts are required for each lap, while the lightweight design improves the front-to-rear weight balance for better handling.” Co-developed with Corvette Racing, the handassembled 7.0lt. (427 cid) V-8 uses a number of high-performance components, including: • • • • • • •
Titanium intake valves and connecting rods, and sodium-filled exhaust valves CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads Forged-steel crankshaft and main bearing caps High-lift camshaft Hydroformed exhaust headers 11.0:1 compression ratio, and a 7,000 rpm redline. 10.5-quart, dry-sump oiling system
For the Camaro Z/28, the LS7 features unique induction and exhaust systems, and delivers at least
500 horsepower (373 kW) and 470 lb-ft of torque (637 Nm). The Camaro Z/28 is exclusively offered with a Tremec TR6060 manual transmission. The six-speed features close-ratio gearing and 3.91:1 final drive ratio, both optimized for the power characteristics of the LS7. Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential featuring a helical gear set, rather than traditional clutch packs. The new design enables the driver to apply more power and get through corners faster, by continuously adjusting the torque bias to maximize available traction. The differential works in unison with Chevrolet’s proprietary Performance Traction Management system, which allows drivers to adjust the level of throttle and brake intervention to match their capability and driving environment. The cooling system includes the dry-sump oiling system for the LS7, which is connected to an integral liquid-to-liquid cooling system for engine oil. A second liquid-to-liquid system provides cooling for the transmission and differential. This system pumps overcooled transmission fluid to a heat exchanger in the rear differential before traveling to the transmission. This reduces differential temperatures as much as 100 degrees F.
FOCUS - CHEVROLET CAMARO Z/28
Camaro Z/28 chassis delivers 1.05 g in cornering grip The singular focus of the Camaro Z/28 is most evident in the chassis, where the most has been made of every component for track use, from the ultra-high performance tires to race-proven dampers. The Camaro Z/28 is the one of the first production cars fitted with race-proven, spool-valve dampers. Compared to a conventional damper that offers only two-way tuning for bump and rebound, a spool-valve damper allows four-way adjustment to precisely tune both bump and re-
bound settings for high-speed and low-speed wheel motions. The wider tuning range allowed engineers to dramatically increase the damper stiffness on the Camaro Z/28 without a significant change in ride quality. Additional chassis changes include stiffer string rates and suspension bushings for improved cornering response. The Camaro Z/28 features 19-inch diameter wheels and tires, which reduce unsprung weight by 42 pounds (19 kilograms) per car compared to the 20-inch wheels standard on Camaro SS and ZL1. In addition, the smaller diameter wheels lower the
center of gravity by 33 millimeters, further improving handling. At all four corners, the lightweight, forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in massive 305/30ZR19 tires. This is the first production application of ultra-high performance Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires. To fully exploit the grip of the Pirelli tires, the Camaro Z/28 also features Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix™ rotors and fixed, monoblock calipers. The large 394 x 36 mm front rotors are paired with six-piston calipers, while the 390 x 32 mm rear rotors are paired four-piston calipers. The combination of tire grip and braking power
enable the Camaro Z/28 to achieve up to 1.5 g in deceleration. With standard front brake cooling ducts, the Z/28 is also capable of continuous track use unmatched brake feel, lap after lap. Extensive lightweighting program To optimize the track performance of the Camaro Z/28, the engineering team subjected it to an intensive lightweighting program, saving 100 pounds (45 kilograms) compared to the naturally aspirated Camaro SS and 300 pounds (136 kilograms) to the supercharged Camaro ZL1.
The first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967, created
to compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am 2 class. It featured a smaller, lighter, 302-cubic-inchV-8 (officially rated at 290 horsepower) for improved weight balance, as well as quick-ratio steering and a heavy-duty suspension for track use. In keeping with its road-racing focus, the 1967 Camaro Z/28 was not available with an automatic transmission or air conditioning. Like the original, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is offered only with a manual transmission.
As the ultimate track-capable
Camaro, this car restores the mission of the original Z/28, and serves as a testament to the expertise of Chevrolet as the best-selling brand of performance cars - said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America - the build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight, high-revving, dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers for track use; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28.
FOCUS - CHEVROLET CAMARO Z/28
The 2014 Camaro is our opportunity to apply what we have learned listening to our customers, and our continuing development of high-performance models - said Tom Peters, Camaro exterior design director we look for solutions that are both functional and beautiful so that the result is genuine Chevrolet simple, powerful, honest, and more than expected.
“We looked at every subsystem for opportunities to save weight - said Oppenheiser - our goal was to get rid of everything that didn’t make the car faster, and keep only what was required by law. For example, we wanted to eliminate the audio system completely, but we had to keep a single speaker for the seat-belt chime to meet safety requirements.” Other examples of weight savings include: • Eliminated the tire-inflator kit, except for Rhode Island and New Hampshire, where it is required by law • Removed interior sound deadener, and carpeting from the trunk • Replaced the standard LN4 battery with a smaller, lightweight, LN3 battery • Specified thinner, 3.2-mm glass for the rear window, compared to 3.5-mm glass on the standard Camaro • HID headlamps and foglights are not available • Air conditioning is only available as a stand-alone option “The team was so fanatical about saving weight, we even stripped the unused wiring out of the harness when we eliminated the fog lights, speakers, and air conditioning - said Oppenheiser - every ounce saved contributed to making this the most track-capable Camaro we have ever built, and a worthy successor to the Z/28 name.”

MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH
THE INCREDIBLE DUO As a tribute to the its 50th anniversary, Lamborghini has this year offered to the public two “extreme” cars characterized by an innovative and “unique” design. Both Veneno and Egoista will remain in the history of the car’s style.
The LamborghiniVeneno
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
celebrated its first public appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and only three unique units of the vehicle will be built and sold. The vehicle on show in Geneva was the number 0, the Lamborghini test vehicle. Its future has not been determined yet, but it will allow Lamborghini to continue its activity of testing and innovation, both on the road and on the race track.TheVeneno is priced at three millionEuros plus tax – and all three units have already been sold to customers. The three supercars will be produced in the course of the year 2013 and handed over to their future owners.
VENENO
THE AGGRESSIVE
Its design is consistently focused on optimum aerodynamics and cornering stability, giving the Veneno the real dynamic experience of a racing prototype, yet it is fully homologated for the road. With a maximum output of 552 kW / 750 hp, the Veneno accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and the top speed for this street-legal racing car stands at 355 km/h. The Lamborghini Veneno features a twelvecylinder power unit with a displacement of 6.5 liters, an extremely fast-shifting 7-speed ISR transmission with 5 driving modes and permanent all-wheel drive, as well as a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. Above all, however, the Veneno benefits from the very special expertise that Automobili Lamborghini possesses in the development and execution of carbon-fiber materials – the complete chassis is produced as a CFRP monocoque, as is the outer skin of this extreme sports car.
The Design The Lamborghini Veneno brings the aerodynamic efficiency of a racing prototype to the road. Every detail of its form pursues a clear function – exceptional dynamics, optimum downforce with minimal drag and perfectcooling of the high-performance engine. Yet the Veneno is unmistakably a Lamborghini; it sticks firmly to the consistent design philosophy of all the supersports cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese. That includes the extreme proportions, as well as the powerfully arrow-shaped front end and the interplay between razor-sharp lines and precise surfaces. The entire front end of the Lamborghini Veneno has been laid out for perfect airflow and downforce. The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing. Large channels guide the air to the outlets in the front hood and in front of the windshield, as well as to the front wheels. Characteristic for Lamborghini is the Y shape of the angular headlamps that reach well into the fenders as well as the scissor doors. The division of the fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of sport prototypes and optimizes at the same time the aerodynamic flow. The side line of the Veneno is therefore dominated by
enormous sills and the mighty wheel arches front and rear. Here, too, sophisticated aerodynamics ensure perfect airflow to the large openings for engine cooling and intake air. Just like the front end, the rear of the Veneno has also been optimized for underbody aerodynamics and high speed cornering stability. The smooth underbody transitions into a substantial diffuser framing the four sizable exhaust pipes divided by a splitter to increase the level of downforce peak. Large openings serve to ventilate the engine bay and manage the airflow to the rear wing, with the only sealed area at the rear being reserved for the license plate. The engine cover sports six wedge-shaped openings, with the focus here, too, on optimum dissipation of heat from the engine. The engine cover extends into a large central “shark” fin, which improves efficiency during braking and rear-end stability, by delivering additional downforce at high yaw angles and thus increasing the high-speed cornering performance. The adjustable rear wing’s design is the product of Motorsport experience and extensive aerodynamic simulation to ensure the best performance of rear wing interaction with rear diffuser air flow.
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
Fully in keeping with the tradition of the brand, the name of
theVeneno originates from a legendary fighting bull.Veneno is the name of one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever. He is also famous for being one of the fastest bulls in the history of bullfighting. His name became popular in 1914, when he fatally wounded the famous torero José Sánchez Rodríguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s, Andalusia, Spain.
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
The exclusive alloy wheels measure 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear and are equipped with center mountings. Their design is also determined by aerodynamic functionality – a carbon-fiber ring around the wheel rim works like a turbine to deliver additional cooling air to the carbon-ceramic brake discs. The Veneno is painted in an all-new, grey metalliclook color with individual parts gleaming in the black of the visible carbon-fiber structure. The three cars sold to customers each feature a single color of the Italian national flag, together a triology in green, white and red accents and thus representing each a unique piece.
The Technology The Veneno is further proof of Automobili Lamborghini’s unique competence in CFRP-based lightweight design. A monocoque made from carbon-fiber reinforced polymer forms the basis of the Veneno. It is largely similar to the Aventador monocoque – as are the aluminum sub-frames front and rear – although its form has been adapted to the new design. All exterior parts are made from CFRP. The Veneno meets all safety and registration requirements worldwide, and naturally also incorporates a full complement of safety systems from airbags through to the adapted ESP handling system.
Carbon fiber dominates the interior of the Veneno, too. The carbon fiber monocoque becomes visible inside the car in the area of the central tunnel and the sills. The two lightweight bucket seats are made from Lamborghini’s patented Forged Composite. The woven carbon-fiber CarbonSkinŽ is used to clad the entire cockpit, part of the seats and the headliner. This unique material is soaked in a very special kind of resin that stabilizes the fiber structure, while allowing the material to remain supple. The racing personality has been transferred also to the instrument panel. It has been completely redesigned and now, thanks to an aggressive graphics and to the introduction of some additional features like the G-meter, provides all necessary information to the driver for control of the car. The systematic, carbon-fiber, lightweight design of the Veneno is not only visible, it is also evident on the scales: With a dry weight of just 1,450 kilograms (3,190 pounds), the Veneno is even 125 kilos (275
pounds) lighter than the already extremely lean Aventador. The highly beneficial power-to-weight ratio of 1.93 kg/hp (4,25 lbs/hp) guarantees a performance that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Even the stunning acceleration figure of 2,8 seconds cannot adequately describe it. Despite an aerodynamic setup configured for extreme downforce, the Veneno possesses exceptionally low wind resistance which allows it to reach a top speed of 355 km/h (221 mph). The twelvecylinder with a displacement of 6.5 liters is a thrilling combination of absolute high-revving frenzy and phenomenal pulling power. Its output has been raised to 552 kW / 750 hp, facilitated through enlarged intake paths, optimized thermodynamics, a slightly higher rated rpm and an exhaust system with even lower back pressure. The ISR manual gearbox, permanent all-wheel drive and pushrod suspension have all been specifically adjusted to meet the demands of the Veneno.
EGOISTA
WITHOUT COMPROMISES
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
Powered by a 5.2-liter V10 engine supplying it with 600 horsepower, the Lamborghini Egoista is an intentionally extreme and unusual vehicle with absolutely unique characteristics, created by the Volkswagen Group design team headed by Walter da Silva. The team chose to create a single-seater, pushing all the characteristics in Lamborghini’s make-up meaning pure driving pleasure, performance and style beyond their limits. The cockpit, designed like a tailor-made suit for the driver, is a removable section which, once combined with the rest of the vehicle, creates a perfect technical, mechanical and aerodynamic unit. Inspiration, as per
Lamborghini tradition, once again comes from the world of aviation, and in particular the Apache helicopter, where the cockpit can be ejected in an emergency. “The cockpit, made completely of carbon fiber and aluminum, represents a sort of survival cell, allowing the driver to isolate and protect themselves from external elements - De Silva explained - we kept an eye on the future when designing the Egoista, with the idea that its cockpit could have been taken from a jet aircraft and integrated into a road vehicle, to provide a different travel option.”
This is a car made for one person only -
saidVolkswagen Groups’s Head of design Walter da Silva - to allow them to have fun and express their personality to the maximum. It is designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme, it is a car without compromises, in a word: egoista (selfish).
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
MISS(ES) OF THE MONTH - THE INCREDIBLE DUO
The design The exterior is characterized by two fundamental aspects: its architecture, and the materials used. The design is determined by a highly muscular structure, in which empty and solid areas fit together with strength and vigor. The bodywork is dominated, on its sides, by the stylized profile of a bull preparing to charge, its horns lowered. The bull is driving towards the front wheels, conferring a futuristic dynamism and lines which are already, in themselves, highly aggressive. Naturally, this is a homage, a bold stylistic citation which can only be a reworking of the Lamborghini brand icon, the well-known raging bull. The plan view reveals a trimaran profile, where the central hull forms a unique section with the cockpit, underlined by the carbon-fiber cover on the front hood. The upper part of the vehicle does not have aerodynamic appendages, but rather flaps integrated in the bodywork profile which act automatically depending on the driving conditions. Two rear flaps activate automatically at high speeds to increase stability, while a series of air intakes on the back of the engine hood provides the cooling air flow to the powerful V10 power plant. While the front of the vehicle has a profile intended to increase downforce, the rear is fully open with the
mechanics in view, reducing weight but also with the result of creating a more aggressive look. The Lamborghini Egoista’s lights are more like an aircraft’s than a road vehicle’s. It does not have traditional headlights, rather LED clearance lights which determine its position not just on a single plane such as the road, but rather in three dimensions, as is required in airspace. Two white front lights, two red rear lights, a red flashing light in the upper part of the tail, two orange bull’s eyes as side markers, and a further two lights on the roof, red on the left and green on the right, make the Egoista unique even in the dark. Finally, hidden behind the front air intakes at the base of the join between the central body and the two side sections, are two powerful xenon headlamps, two eagle’s eyes able to scan the darkness for great distances. As it is made from lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon-fiber, the vehicle has no-walk zones, duly marked like on airliners. The parallels with the world of aeronautics do not end here, however, as the body is made from a special antiradar material, and the glass is anti-glare with an orange gradation. The rims are also made from antiradar material, flat and rough, embellished with carbonfiber plates to improve their aerodynamics. Interior The cockpit’s interior is extremely rational, its functionality taken to the extreme. There is a racing seat with a fourpoint seatbelt, the airbags and the bare minimum of instruments. The focal point of these is a headup display, typical of jet fighters. To get out of the vehicle, the driver must remove the steering wheel and rest it on the dashboard, open the dome with an electronic command, stand up in their seat, sit down on a precise point of the lefthand bodywork, then swivel their legs 180 degrees from the inside of the cockpit to the outside of the vehicle.

HERR DTM If the NASCAR championship is without any doubt the best “motorsport show” in the world, the DTM series is today able to attract incredible crowds at every event and is regarded as the “pinnacle” of European touring car racing and one of the leaders in international sports events.
T
he magic three letters “DTM” once stood for “Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft” (German Touring Car Championship). Today, they are the trademark of the most popular international touring car racing series. Its history began in the 1984 season with cars that were close to the production versions and culminated in a worldwide series for high-tech touring cars in 1996. After a three-season break the DTM celebrated its successful comeback in 2000 with a trendsetting concept – fascinating technology at reasonable costs.
Able to attract former F.1 stars and young talents from every Continent the DTM sees Audi, BMW and Mercedes protagonist both on track and under the stage, as the three German industries also take part in the series management. Clear and stable technical rules and, on the sporting side, a thrilling race format ensures that the DTM delivers captivating sport to its fans. A carefully thoughtout set of rules provides neutrality and transparency.

ADVERTORIAL
We had some difficulties finding balance - says the expert British driver ...” e ultima frase “The presence of the Russian team in the WTCC sounds, race after race, more exciting and competitive.
FROM RUSSIA WITH SPEED
L
ADA Sport Lukoil is the very first Russian factory racing team that has entered a World FIA sanctioned series. To make its debut in the international “racing scene” the Russian factory chose to enter a few years ago the World Touring Car Championship, the only truly “world” series together with Formula 1, the World Rally Championship and the World Endurance Championship. It has been a hard choice, because this series (see Cars GlobalMag May) is an ultra-competitive one, attended by racing expert and strong brands as Chevrolet, SEAT, BMW, Honda (waiting for the Citroen arrival next year). After a disappointing debut in 2009 with the not competitive Priora model, LADA (part of the Autovaz Company) made its comeback last year, taking part in a couple of rounds. The new Granta immediately offered good sensations to the team and the drivers so LADA decided to invest in a long term WTCC programme.
T
his year the team started to reach good results both with the super-expert English James Thompson and the young Russian Mikhail Kozlovskiy and is already working to develop the car for the 2014 season, when the WTCC technical rules will change, offering a new exciting challenge to the engineers. “ We are now developing our LADA Granta to meet the new 2014 rules using all the experience we gain in 2013 - says the team principal Victor Shapovalov - This car will have a more racing look, more power, more stability and drivability. After the first half of the season, we have a clear understanding how to improve the car. During the races we tested the car on various types of circuits, now we know all the strengths and weak points of LADA Granta and are able to work out the program of its development”.
T
o know more about the team, the series and the season expectations it’s also interesting to know the drivers point of view: “I started my cooperation with LADA in 2009 - says James Thompson - and this was a great challenge for me… the new team, the new car! It is always interesting to be a part of an interesting and challenging project from the very beginning.
ADVERTORIAL
I usually don ‘t watch races on TV…
Formula 1 sometimes - says Thompson - but not much. You are very disconnected from the event. I prefer to be involved. Being at the wheel is more preferable than being a spectator. As for the other hobbies, I love golf, tennis, skiing… nothing too exciting.
I
n 2009 we achieved some success – the best result of that season was two sixth places at the 10th round of WTCC in Italy. The great work was done in terms of the development of the car. Unfortunately, the project was cancelled due to the financial difficulties. In 2012 we did some testing during two WTCC races with the new car LADA Granta and I can say that in 2013 our starting platform was much higher than we had before. Everything was a big step forward from Priora – the whole car, the aerodynamic, the chassis, the suspension. As for LADA’s progress this year, overall I am happy with what we have achieved, despite of a disappointing start of the season, when we had a number of racing accidents. But the car is competitive and we are trying to make most of it. It’s been a really tough learning year with a new car – it’s been a “roller coaster” as we had to make most of testing during the racing week-ends. We are always testing new technical solutions for the car and the car is improving from race to race. We are improving its overall speed and the reliability. Each track gives us valuable information about the car’s performance. We had some problems in the first part of the season, for example, in Slovakia and Hungary, when driving at the long corners. We also had some difficulties with finding a balance, but now the car is much better, we found proper solutions and almost managed to solve our problems. In Moscow and Portugal we were really strong – this is the result of all the changes made in the previous months. In Argentina we were also constantly fighting in TOP10, but experienced tough contact fighting that caused technical problems with the car. The grid is very competitive, but we managed to top some sessions during the season, in most of the races we were fighting in top-10 and in most races we made Qualifying 2” - What expectations do you and the team have for the rest of the season? “We want to be consistently in TOP-10 and fight with the front cars in every race. But we also feel strong enough to fight for the top-positions. It was obviously seen at the Race of Russia, where I finished in TOP-5 in the Race 1, and in the Race 2 I was fighting for the third position. It was also seen in Porto where I had two sixth places. Granta was also the fastest in the warm-up sessions two consecutive rounds – in Austria and in Russia. That really shows that the car is competitive. It’s’ a natural thing that our expectations grow and we want to keep improving. I really feel happy to drive LADA, I am pleased to be the first LADA driver who scored the points in such a strong championship as WTCC, and of course, I would like to be the first to win the WTCC race at the wheel of LADA. I am sure this is possible” - How does it feel to have competed in over 100 FIA WTCC races? “I’m very happy and proud to have managed over 100 races driving many different cars, and winning a few races along the way. Although not a successful as I would of liked yet, I am confident that will change before 200 comes up! I think the series is in very good health with many top international teams and drivers, although it has changed from its conception with more private teams and less manufacturers but overall I think the quality of machinery and the level you need to operate to is much higher. And I do believe that more manufacturers will join WTCC. LADA has come
back in 2013, Citroen has also made the decision to compete in WTCC and will come into the Championship in 2014 with a very strong driver line-up” - Which track is your favorite one? “Monza and Macao are very special tracks. I prefer circuits like Monza, which is historic and true nostalgic. It’s been for many years home for GrandPrix of Formula 1. It’s so nice to race on these circuits. The traditional European circuits still keep memories of the past, of the great victories. I also love Macao, but it’s quite difficult track, you need at least three years to get used to it. It’s one of the fastest tracks in the world (as well as Monza). The top speed in Monza and Macao is similar - 260 km/h. Macao is the street circuit, there are no run offs, there are a lot of blind corners. It takes long time to learn the circuit” - When a manufacturer starts to invest money in motorsport, some people expect perfect results in one year. Do you think fast results are possible in the world series? How much time does it take to be the leader? “It doesn’t happen overnight. You can’t just produce the car, arrive and win the championship. It’s a

in Formula is good - says Kozlovskiy the Formula cars are specially designed for the races. You can learn much from this experience. Besides it’s inexpensive at the first stage. But in the higher classes of Formula races the budgets are incomparably higher than the touring budgets. The Touring races are cheaper and more affordable for the drivers. Therefore we can see more cars on the grid, and the fight in the Touring races is a bit tougher. I also think that Touring championships are more spectacular than Formula races.
hard work, step- by-step improving of the car. It’s a development program. You need at least three years to developIf you look at Chevrolet brand, they didn’t win up to fourth year of their participation. It takes time. I don’t know anybody who comes to the Championship and dominates there straight away. It’s professional sport. First you win one podium, then another one and then you start winning podiums consistently. Consistency – that’s one of the main factors. You have to be patient”
J
ust 24 years old, Mikhail Kozlovskiy joined the team at the 2nd championship round in Morocco: “I feel the progress from race to race. My best result of this season is 13th position in Morocco (race 2), but I am sure I will be able to improve it and score the points until the end of the season. At the 8th round in Argentina I set the fourth fastest lap in the warm-up, I was also in TOP-12 in FP2 in Argentina (12th result) and in warm-up in Russia (12th result). I am also constantly reducing the gap between my result and the result of my team-mate James Thompson, and the timesheets confirm that. In Argentinean FP2 I was just three tenths a second slower. The point is that very often your position in the race depends on the qualifying result. So we are concentrating on performing good results in qualifying. The main problem remains the same – almost all the circuits are unfamiliar to me, and there are not some many tracks where pre-race tests are allowed. So I have to learn the new tracks “from zero” during FP and Q sessions. But even when I start the race from not very good position I am able to overtake and climb up to the middle of the grid. So the priority for me is to try to make Q2 at each round to secure a better start position on the grid. Though this is a “learning year” for me, I always set the maximum goals in every race. We are constantly working on the car and it’s really fast now, though sometimes it’s not easy to find proper set-up for each circuit. We should not forget that for LADA Granta it is the first season in WTCC and each racetrack is new for our car” - What goals did the team set for you in the beginning and how did these goals change during the first half of the season?
“The only goal is to make a progress. I learn much from every race in terms of driving at various types of circuits, tactics, passing through the different kinds of corners. This is the World Championship and the level of the drivers is very high. Most of them have a vast experience in racing in this Championship, they know the tracks very well. All the drivers are very close in their results. Actually a couple of tenths of a second can put you 5 or 6 positions ahead” - How did your racing career start? “I started from go-karting – the typical situation for the racing drivers. When I was 10 years old, my uncle took me to the go-karting school. After winter study program I spent the summer season in the Russian Cup (class “Mini”), I was eleven by that time. After some years in go-karting I spent two seasons in Formula 1600 races and then moved to the Touring races in 2007” - What is your impression of the debut in WTCC? “I like everything! Here is a home atmosphere. But this Championship requires much experience from the driver. If you are young and come into the Championship, you need time to understand these races. A number of races should pass before you start getting really good results. In WTCC there is a tough contact fight and you should think several steps ahead. You may not be very fast at the lap, but if you capable of fighting on the track you can count on some good results” - What do you do when you have free time? “I prefer active life style. I love trying different kinds of sports – snowboard, football, wakeboard. But motorsport is a priority and I try to minimize any risks of injures while doing other sport activities. Also I like to enlarge horizons learning new things. Last year I graduated from the Saint-Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance and got a master’s degree in HR. I continue to enhance my knowledge in this area as well”

Honda HPD prepares new 2014 LMP1 engine Honda Performance Development (HPD) is the Honda racing company within North America. Located in Santa Clarita (California), HPD is the technical operations center for high-performance Honda racing cars and engines.
H
onda Performance Development, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Company, is continuing its commitment to customer LMP1 endurance sports-car racing with the 2014 introduction of an allnew, turbocharged V6 engine, to be followed in 2015 by a range of bespoke energy recovery options, for FIA World Endurance Championship competition. After several successful seasons supplying the normally aspirated Honda LM-V8 engine to private teams in both the WEC and American Le Mans Series, HPD engineers and designers made the decision to offer their partner teams access to updated technology which the company believes will be necessary to successfully compete on the world stage, under the ACO’s new LMP1 energy-based power train regulations. The new engine HR22T is based on the same architecture used in the 2.2-liter direct injection turbocharged V6 engine used in IZOD IndyCar Series competition since 2012, designed to be coupled with a new energy recovery system developed in concert with HPD technical partner Magneti Marelli. A completely revised rules package being introduced for the WEC in 2014 opens the door for HPD to introduce this new powertrain system, specifically tailored to meet the needs of private teams engaged in top-level endurance sports-car racing competition. Starting in 2014, rather than any set engine displacement or air inlet restrictor limits, the technical regulations for the series will specify a maximum
fuel-flow rate into the engine, with or without energy recovery systems. “The new rules say that if you are a private team, you can either run without energy recovery systems or choose to add the level of energy recovery that best suits your needs. This will allow our customers to choose the ERS solution that meets their needs – everything from no energy recovery up to the full eight Megajoule maximum - said Steve Eriksen, HPD Vice President this new regulation direction that is more conscious of environmental technologies will encourage HPD to participate from the perspectives of both developing future technologies and nurturing engineers.” HPD’s highly successful LMP2 program will likewise continue in 2013 with the cost-capped ARX-03b chassis and production-based Honda HR28TT twinturbocharged direct injection V6 engine. The engine/ chassis package remains eligible to compete in both the WEC and the newly combined United Sports Car Racing series in North America. One of the most successful prototype chassis in recent years, the HPD ARX series has posted 58 victories and six enduranceracing championships since its introduction – and debut LMP2 victory – at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2007. In addition to the new engine and its energy recovery system, HPD and chassis technical partner Wirth Research are also developing a coupé version of the successful ARX chassis series that will provide a fully integrated solution for the new V6 Honda powerplant and ERS.

AN EXCITNG CHALLENGE IN SUPERSTARS

Since the debut in the 2010 season the team based in Milan plays a protagonist role in the Superstars Series, reserved to the “muscle” V8 supercars.
O
fficially supported by AMG, the Romeo Ferraris team is this year again on top of this competitive championship and presents on the starting grids two “seductive” AMG Mercedes C63 and an impressive drivers duo: Vitantonio Liuzzi and Thomas Biagi. The 2013 season seems to be a very hard one: BMW, Porsche, Chevrolet, Jaguar are on the grid with good cars and good drivers but the best competitor seems to be the Audi Sport Italia Team, that takes an undeniable advantage by the “4 wheel drive” of the powerful A5 driven by the expert and fast Gianni Morbidelli.
The battle for the title is more and more exciting and after 6 of the 8 scheduled rounds, the Romeo Ferraris driver Thomas Biagi is still leading with the same points of Morbidelli. The last part of the championship promises to be a really thrilling one! On the other hand, as consequence of the super-positive result series in the first part of the season, the other Ferraris team driver Vitantonio Liuzzi is actually the leader of the Italian Superstars Championship, which involved the Monza and Portimão rounds and will also include the two closing rounds of the season at Imola (September 29th) and Vallelunga (October 13th).

McLaren celebrates half century
M6 GT, THE VERY FIRST MCLAREN ROAD CAR Bruce McLaren was born in 1937 in Auckland, New Zealand and in 1963 founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in order to develop and race sports cars alongside his commitment as lead driver in the Cooper Grand Prix team.
T
he young Bruce McLaren arrived in the UK in 1958 with the ‘Driver to Europe’ scheme that was designed to encourage antipodean drivers to compete with the cream of the world’s drivers. His mentor was Jack Brabham who introduced Bruce to Cooper Cars, the small Surbiton (London)-based team who were poised to create a revolution with compact, lightweight Grand Prix cars powered by an engine behind the driver. Following an auspicious start to his F2 career in 1958
he joined the F1 team for 1959 and stayed with Cooper for seven years. Bruce made an impact almost immediately by winning the 1959 US Grand Prix aged just 22 years 80 days, at that time the youngest Grand Prix winner. He went on to win three more Grand Prix and countless sports car victories. Yet Bruce was no ordinary driver. His upbringing was steeped in cars and practical engineering at his parent’s service station and workshop.
CLASSIC - MCLAREN CELEBRATES HALF CENTURY
Bruce McLaren, inside his Formula 1, talks with his team-mate Danny Hulme
By the age of 14 he had entered a local hill climb in an Austin 7 Ulster and shown promise both as a driver and an engineer. Back to the 1960s Bruce raced, as did most Grand Prix drivers of this time, in sports cars, Grand Touring cars and more humble saloon cars alongside his commitments to Cooper in Formula 1. He drove for Jaguar, Aston Martin and Ford with whom he won the Le Mans 24 hours in 1966. He was a true competitor who excelled at innovating and developing racing cars. It was this passion that led Bruce to start his own company, firstly to develop and race a Cooper with a rearmounted Oldsmobile engine that helped to kick start the ‘big banger’ sports car era. In a show of
loyalty to Cooper cars Bruce engineered two 2.5 litre Coopers for the 1964 Tasman series which he won. In 1964 Bruce and his small team built the first true McLaren sports car – the M1A – which became a top contender in sports car racing both in Europe and America. After proving its credentials the orders rolled in and 24 examples were built. Its successor, the M1B, was quicker still and carried Bruce’s nascent team into the inaugural Can-Am (Canadian – American Challenge Cup) championship. These cars were faster than the then current Formula 1 cars providing a spectacle of colour accompanied by the deep rumble of highly-tuned, large American V8 engines. The inaugural year of this championship did not yield a victory for McLaren but Bruce came third in the series.
T
he following year, 1967, saw the start of one of the most dominant episodes in motor sport history. Now in its trademark papaya orange livery, Bruce and fellow Kiwi Denny Hulme’s Can-Am cars won five of the six races with Bruce taking McLaren’s first title. In the following five seasons what became known as the ‘Bruce and Denny show’ rolled on with Hulme winning
the title in 1968 and 1970, while Bruce claimed his second title in 1969. Peter Revson won for McLaren in 1971. Between 1967 and 1971 the works McLarens won 37 of the 43 races including 19 onetwos. Such dominance won many admirers and many sales of racing sports cars and, just occasionally a customer car won too. Over the duration of the Can-Am series McLaren was the dominant victor with 43 victories, almost three times more than its closest competitor Porsche. Early on in McLaren’s history, company founder and racing driver Bruce McLaren set out to capitalise on the team’s success in the Can-Am series by building a racing car for the road. The McLaren M6 GT was Bruce’s pet project and he developed the car in-house at his Colnbrook factory near London during 1968/9. Only one prototype was made based on the dominant 1967 McLaren M6 chassis – a full monocoque tub made of aluminium alloy sheet over steel bulkheads. The engine was a 5.7 litre Ford unit producing around 370bhp and the chassis was clothed in an attractive coupé body
made of reinforced polyester resin. The M6 GT’s dry weight of 725 kilos testifies that it really was a racing car for the road, rather than a civilised supercar. Bruce’s underlying idea was to make a road car that could be easily modified to compete in the 1969 Group 4 sports car category – a car to compete with Ferrari, Porsche and Alfa Romeo – as well as to offer the fastest, quickest accelerating and best handling road car on the market. Bruce’s prototype was good for over 165mph with a 0-100mph acceleration time of eight seconds. When the FIA changed the homologation rules to require a minimum of 50 units to qualify for the race series it became too much of a commercial challenge for the young company, and Bruce’s tragic death at Goodwood in June 1970 effectively terminated the project. Trojan (McLaren’s partner for production of customer race cars) however, did build three M6GTs for customers.

RENAULT TWIZY
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS ?
With a completely innovative two-seater design, protective and comfortable, fun yet daring, open and revitalising, Renault Twizy marks a revolution of the all-electric vehicles. All large cities have problems with traffic congestion, and Twizy stands out as a clever urban mobility solution. Twizy is developed by Renault Sport Technologies and is produced in Renault’s factory in Valladolid, Spain.
F
irst unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as an avant-garde concept, and aimed equally at women and men, young people or professionals, Twizy is not only out of the ordinary but delivers also genuine, economical and environmentally-respectful fun. Twizy brings city dwellers an all -new urban mobility solution – for one person or two. Thanks to its ultracompact footprint (length = 2.34m / width = 1.24m) and very low centre of gravity, Twizy can slip into the smallest of gaps and park on a dime. It takes barely six seconds to accelerate from zero to 45kph (the same performance as a 125cc scooter over a distance of 50 metres): Twizy is an incredibly effective four-wheeler! On a typical urban journey, it enables a great time saving - including parking– without consuming a drop of fuel. Thanks to the panoramic visibility it offers, as well as its thin windscreen pillars, open architecture, 3.4-metre turning circle and parking aids.

Safer than a two- or threewheeler The regulations that govern quadricycles are not the same as those for a car, but that didn’t stop Twizy from drawing on Renault’s exceptional expertise in the field of vehicle safety. To begin with, four wheels are obviously more stable than two or three, while Twizy is equipped with disc brakes allround and hugs the road thanks to exclusive development input from Renault Sport Technologies. Its friendly features and unusual proportions form a protective cell around two genuine seats, while the driver benefits from a front airbag and a four-point harness, plus a three-point seat belt for the passenger. Twizy’s optional doors provide additional protection from both the elements and draughts. Meanwhile, its two dash-mounted glove boxes (3.5 and 5 litres, the latter lockable) are equipped with a 12V power supply, and a further 31-litre stowage area is concealed behind the passenger seat.
Three finishes and four colours Twizy comes in a choice of three equipment levels: Urban (safety and maximum comfort, even for the entry level version), Color (high on looks and colour) and Technic a (classy black and white trim, alloy wheels and metallic paint as standard). To cater for restrained or more flamboyant tastes, the body can be ordered in white, black, grey or red, or even with a two-tone livery. With a selection of three trims for the Color version, the roof, optional doors, glove box lids and even seat upholstery can be specified in blue, red or green. The same applies to the diamondeffect aluminium alloy wheels which can be specified to match the same three colours (option). Last but not least, the Technic equipment level is modern down to the smallest details, from the carbon-fibre look on the body decals to the white front seat back and anti-UV transparent roof.

A real choice To cover individual needs, Twizy is available with a choice of motors, one of which enables it to be driven without a driving licence: • Twizy 45 (no driving licence required, depending on national legislation): 4kW (5hp), instantly available peak torque of 33Nm but top speed capped at 45kph, • 13kW (17hp), maximum torque of 57Nm and a top speed of 80kph.
Further customisation are possible thanks to a range of comprehensive decal sets which, in addition to the different equipment levels, will permit owners to design their own Twizy as a function of their personal tastes. A raft of accessories: hands-free telephony, a 50-litre carrier bag, a leg cover for protection against the elements, a rear parking sensor, an anti-theft alarm... Twizy can be adapted to every need and desire.

The latest creation from Renault SportTechnologies It didn’t take long to decide who the right people to develop the chassis were: because of Twizy’s mid-rear mounted engine (like Clio V6), it was the obvious choice to hand the project over to a focused, lean team. The engineering of its handling performance was in expert hands at Les Ulis, south of Paris. There were no benchmarks for a concept of this sort, but that was of little matter, since the combination of Renault Sport Technologies’ motorsport experience, the quality of its previous motorsport projects and the team spirit in the design office and workshops did the rest. In addition to leading 80 percent of the overall design work, RST was in complete charge of the car’s handling performance. Given that this was an unprecedented product with an ultra-short incubation period, as well as the little inhouse experience of the chosen type of electric motor and limited testing resources, its development was a major challenge. Thanks to its experience of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), only Renault F1 had both the expertise and the available testing resources. Volvo’s new Drive-E engines
V
olvo Cars’ new Drive-E range of powertrains takes efficiency to a new dimension in which the number of cylinders is no longer important to describe power and drivability. The first three engines from the two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain family will be launched in autumn 2013. “We have created smaller, more intelligent engines with power curves that give exciting driveability compared with engines with more cylinders yet deliver the fuel economy of only four cylinders. In addition, by adding electrification such as plug-in hybrid technology, we will reach power figures in the V8 territory,” says Derek Crabb, Vice President Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group. The whole Drive-E engine range, which, during the development phase, was called Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA), basically consists of two four-cylinder engines, one common rail diesel and one direct-injected petrol version. They replace eight engine architectures on three platforms. Drive-E diesels will range from 120 to 230 hp. Petrol versions will start at 140 hp and go all the way up to 300-plus hp. The diesels feature world-first i-Art technology. By featuring pressure feedback from each fuel injector instead of using a traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail, i-Art makes it possible to continuously monitor and adapt fuel injection per combustion in each of the four cylinders. Each injector has a small computer on top of it that monitors injection pressure. Using this information, the self-adapting i-Art system makes sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle.

Growth was in double figures in the Middle East (+39%, 264 cars) and Japan which, with 172 delivers in this first six months (+28%), has returned to near pre-crisis levels.
