AUTONEWS Frankfurt

AUTO NEWS FRANKFURT

NOT JUST ELECTRIC

The 2013 edition of the IAA Frankfurt offered a great display of interesting electric and hybrid cars, but it also demonstrated that manufacturers are still able to turn heads by introducing new models powered by the classic internal combustion engine. Cars GlobalMag brings you all the new cars presented in Frankfurt not only on this issue. Many premieres were already reviewed on Cars GlobalMag September. Still available for free on www.carsgm.com

AUDI A3 CABRIOLET

T

he new compact class cabriolet has grown compared to the previous model: its length has increased from 4.24 to 4.42 metres, its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 metres and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 metres. Only its height (1.41 metres) is down on its predecessor, by 15 millimetres. Luggage capacity has also grown by 60 litres, and access to that space has been improved. The new A3 Cabriolet has a soft fabric roof that is stretched over a lightweight kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel, and it complements the car’s design perfectly. At the press of a button, the top opens or closes electro-hydraulically in less than 18 se-

conds at speeds of up to 31mph. When retracted, the top – folded into three layers – rests in a tray that barely affects luggage capacity, which is 287 litres. The acoustic soft top has a glass rear window and is available in black, grey and brown - its roof liner can be specified in black or lunar silver. The cabin offers enough space for four adults, and the seatbacks of the two rear seats can be folded down to create a wide through-load area. The steering wheel and seats are new designs, and the new electro-mechanical parking brake is operated by a button on the centre console. Optional assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist, camera-based traffic sign/speed limit recognition, park assist with selective display and various feature levels of the Audi pre sense safety system. Three newly developed engines will be offered in the Audi A3 Cabriolet at its launch. The two TFSI engines produce 140PS and 180PS from 1.4 and 1.8 litres of engine displacement, respectively, while the 2.0 TDI develops 150PS; other engines will follow – ranging from the 1.6 TDI with 110PS to the 2.0 TFSI, which will power the Audi S3 Cabriolet with 300PS. The compact class open-top will become available for ordering in late October, and will reach its first customers in March 2014.

BENTLEY

CONTINENTAL GT V8 S

A

vailable in both coupe and convertible forms, the the new GT V8 S features an uprated version of Bentley’s twin-turbo, 4.0-litre engine that now develops 521 bhp (528 PS / 389 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb.ft) of torque together with careful suspension modifications and a selection of new exterior and interior features. The GT V8 S coupe sprints from 0-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.5s) and onto a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h). The performance of the GT V8 S convertible is equally impressive, reaching 60 mph from a standing start in 4.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.7s) and a top speed of 191mph (308km/h). This increased performance is not at the cost of the efficient engine’s fuel economy capabilities, with both coupe and convertible able to cover over 500 miles (805 km) on a single tank of fuel.

A suite of enhancements to the Continental chassis provide greater agility and body control to match the engine’s higher output. A more sporting setup sees ride height lowered by 10 mm front and rear while spring rates, bushes and the rear anti-roll bar are stiffened. Recalibrated damping, steering and ESC complete the package for an exhilarating and involving driving experience. The new GT V8 S coupe and convertible will arrive in Bentley dealerships from early 2014.

FERRARI 458 SPECIALE

AUTO NEWS FRANKFURT

T

he 458 Speciale is the latest product of Ferrari’s core philosophy of extreme technological innovation and research which, in this instance, has yielded powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics advances that transform the already exceptional 458 Italia into a car genuinely worthy of the “Speciale” moniker. Many of the sophisticated solutions being applied for the very first time to an in-range car in the 458 Speciale, including its advanced active aerodynamics, will become a standard feature of all new Ferraris in the future. Ferrari has now built its most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever (605 cv) with an extraordinary specific power output of 135 cv/l, the highest ever achieved by a road-going naturally aspirated engine. Thanks to an equally exceptional weight/power ratio of just 2.13 kg/cv, the 458 Speciale can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.0 seconds (0-200 km/h in 9.1 seconds) and also clocked a lap time of just 1:23.5 at the Fiorano Circuit. Aerodynamic requirements guided the work of the Ferrari Styling Centre, which led the project in cooperation with Pininfarina, to sculpt the car’s forms to ensure they were more performance-oriented than ever. The most notable features in this sense are the front and rear movable aerodynamics which balance

downforce and cut drag, thus helping make the 458 Speciale the most aerodynamically efficient range production car in Ferrari history. One of the most innovative features of the 458 Speciale is the Side Slip angle Control system (SSC) which makes it easier to achieve car control on the limit, thereby greatly improving driving emotions. Thanks to the development of an accurate new algorithm SSC performs instant-to-instant analysis of the car’s side slip, comparing it with the target value and then optimising both torque management (via integration with F1- Trac traction control) and torque distribution between the two wheels (via integration with the EDiff electronic differential).

C

reated under the direction of Kia’s Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, the upgraded Optima features new headlights, fog lamps, rear lights, bumpers and wheels. At the front, the LED daytime running lights are moved from the bumper into the headlight – consistent with other Kia models – and the fog lamps are set into a body-colour panel rather than the transverse black panel of the original design. New four-point LED fog lamps generate a truly distinctive appearance and echo the dramatic appearance of the lamps fitted to the new Kia pro_cee’d GT. The upgraded Optima range receives new 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheel designs and a new sharper-edged

KIA OPTIMA boot lid. The new Kia Optima will be available in a choice of up to 10 colours, including seven metallic and two pearl finishes. Drivers of automatic models can use Drive-Mode-Select to choose between three driving modes: the default Normal mode; Active ECO mode, which enhances fuel economy; and Sport mode, which delivers more immediate engine response and increases the weight of the steering. The upgraded Optima is available to European consumers with a choice of two engines carried over from the previous model – a 2.0-litre 165 ps petrol engine and a 1.7-litre 136 ps diesel.

LEXUS GS 300H

T

he introduction of the new GS 300h premium saloon makes Lexus the first prestige brand to offer a choice of two full hybrid powertrains in the same model range, the new version lining up alongside the GS 450h launched in 2012. The new GS 300h is powered by a second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system, similar to that introduced in the IS 300h. It offers significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2, NOx and particulate emissions, at no cost to performance. The full hybrid system comprises a 141bhp (105kW) electric motor and a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle petrol engine with next-generation D-4S fuel injection, Dual VVT-i intelligent valve timing and a high-efficiency exhaust gas recirculation system.

The engine develops 178bhp (133kW) at 6,000rpm and 221Nm of torque from 4,200 to 5,400rpm. Drive is to the rear wheels via an electronic continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Total system power is 220bhp (164kW). CO2 emissions for the GS 300h will start at 109g/km – band B for UK road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty), with combined cycle fuel consumption from 60.1mpg. The GS 300h F Sport will be available with additional elements to sharpen ride and handling, including Active Variable Suspension. In styling terms, the GS 300h adopts the exterior design introduced by the GS 450h in 2012, including the prominent interpretation of the Lexus spindle grill design. The GS 300h will be launched later this year.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE ZEGNA & DIESEL

T

he Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car saw its world premiere in Frankfurt featuring a unique new look in colour scheme, materials and finish. The exterior of the concept car features a special effect paint finish that simulates the fluidity and purity of metal, by using ultra-fine aluminium pigments. A gloss black primer amplifies the brilliance of aluminium pigments and creates a sensation of depth. A leading role in this concept car is played by its interior. Classical warm hues like moka and greige are re-interpreted in a modern key to emulate Zegna’s latest men’s fashion collections, conveying a formal, sophisticated character. Interior components such as seats, door panels and roof lining are finished in genuine leather, in addition to a velvet-smooth, bright fabric that, due to Zegna’s vast experience and knowhow, guarantees the level of performance needed for automotive applications. The 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine delivers 275 horsepower (a second version for the Italian market puts out 250 HP) with 600 Nm of torque, taking the Maserati Quattroporte to a top speed of 250 km/h (240 km/h for the 250 HP version) and pushing it from 0 to 100 in only 6.4 seconds (6.8 seconds for the 250 HP version).

NISSAN X-TRAIL

F AUTO NEWS FRANKFURT

ully connected, X-Trail is the first model to benefit from the latest generation NissanConnect in-car navigation, information and entertainment

system. The new X-Trail adopts Nissan’s advanced electronic four-wheel drive system, ALL MODE 4x4i. Controlled via a rotary switch on the centre console, it offers a choice between two-wheel drive, Auto mode or Lock offering permanent four-wheel drive. In the ‘default’ Auto mode, the system constantly monitors throttle opening, engine speed and torque to anticipate wheel spin and to distribute torque between front and rear axles as needed, at speeds of up to 80 km/h. Above that speed, the system reacts to wheelspin, again shifting drive rearwards to restore traction as required. For tricky conditions and at low speeds, Lock gives new X-Trail permanent four-wheel drive, while drivers also have the option of a two-wheel drive only version. Further details of new X-Trail engine and model line-up will be released closer to the car’s on sale date in Europe next year.

FOCUS

THE NEW PEUGEOT 308

UNPRECEDENTED S E N S AT I O N S The new PEUGEOT 308 is part of the strategic C segment, which represents a third of all sales in Europe. It is a dynamic and very competitive market in which the hatchback remains the most popular body style of the segment (43%), far ahead of the SUV/Crossover at 26% and the MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) at 16%. PEUGEOT designers and engineers have designed a modern hatchback with a pure and sleek design.

T

he efficiency of the new PEUGEOT 308 is inspired on a virtuous process of weight reduction. It offers compact dimensions and much reduced in weight. The space inside the passenger compartment and the particularly large boot are in line with the expectations of its customers. With a length of 4.25m, the new PEUGEOT 308 is one of the most compact hatchback in its segment. It is also lower, with a height of 1.46m and wider with a width of 1.80m. The front and rear overhangs have been reduced, due to the new EMP2 platform which makes it possible to place the wheels nearer to the ‘four corners’. These dimensions define a resolutely dynamic posture promising a spacious interior. The width at the elbows is 1440mm in the front and 1412mm in the rear. The vertical interior space reaches 895mm in row the front and 874mm in the rear. The 470-litre boot volume, of which 35-litres are divided storage compartments under the floor mat, is a record space in the segment. The low loading sill and the wide opening make loading the rectangular and accommodating space easy.

FOCUS - THE NEW PEUGEOT 308

The new PEUGEOT 308 successfully passed numerous tests of quality on use, among which: 2.5 million kilometres driven before the launch, 2.500 hours of tests on the 4-ram vibration and climate test beds, 250.000 cycles of air conditioning tested, 4.3 million presses on the touch screen without failure.

A pure and sleek design Sleek and dynamic, the new PEUGEOT 308 has well-balanced proportions. Pure lines which follow the engineering structure create a sturdy appearance and a precise balance between elegance, sportiness and high-quality. At the front, a large centrally-placed grille, surrounded with chrome, emphasises the upmarket elegance of the new PEUGEOT 308. Full LED headlamps are specified as standard on the higher levels of finish. They create a strong light signature. Thin, expressive and sculpted, they have the characteristic feline appearance, focused and technological. In the lower area, a wide air intake is framed by fog lamps and direction indicators, set into a chromed surround in the shape of a ‘C’ curve, open on each side towards the outside. The whole shape gives fullness to the front face of the vehicle, and produces the effect of dynamism and strength.

The different design of the lower front panel features on the two lower trim levels and these models are equipped with halogen lights to retain their dynamic and stylish expression. From the bonnet emerge the lines which fashion with precise character of the new PEUGEOT 308. The smooth exterior mirror, in the shape of a pebble, incorporates a LED directional indicator, confirming that purity and quality go hand in hand. The window profiles over the top side of the body illustrate a spacious passenger compartment. The characteristic PEUGEOT triangular rear quarter panel, centred over the wheel, emphasises the strong character of the new 308. The rear view has a pyramid silhouette, characterising a vehicle firmly planted on the road. The tailgate, with a curve continuing on from the line which runs around the entire body, brings to mind the elegance of the inspirational SR1 Concept car. A second horizontal line widens the rear attitude at the base and highlights a low loading sill aperture. The new PEUGEOT 308 benefits from a design with an excellent aerodynamic shape and detailing.

With a Cd of 0.28 and a CdA of 0.63m², it is among the best of hatchbacks in the segment. The controlled air inlets and the aero-screens under the body of the EMP2 platform form an integrated flat underside, greatly contributing to this aero performance, despite the challenges for this type of body shape. The aerodynamic properties, like the effect of weight, are key factors for reducing the vehicle’s environmental footprint.

Refined and technological interior The new PEUGEOT 308 offers an innovative interior: with the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit. This consists of four integrated components: a compact steering wheel for intense dynamic sensations, a highpositioned ‘head up’ instrument panel to easily read the information without taking the driver’s eyes off the road ahead, an enhancing high centre console and a large 9.7” touch screen for intuitive driving. The design of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit is both pure and technological. The horizontal console and the top of the dashboard position it at a premium level. It offers panoramic reading with fluid, dynamic and structured lines. Fully padded, the dashboard extends to the windscreen in a continuous movement. The virtual absence of buttons combined with the use of upmarket materials brings a purity not presently available in the market. The large 9.7” touch screen, surrounded by vents finely designed in the shape of a tuning fork, is set in a high quality satin chrome cocoon. The volume button, like a Hi-Fi object, is pure and technological, surrounded by a ring of white light. The CD player next to it is inserted in a long, thin chromed bar. Satin chrome decorations enhance the controls on the centre console and front do-

ors. From their appearance, all of these upmarket components, like the speakers of the DENON HiFi option, are designed to integrate perfectly and permit fits of the very highest quality. The textiles and materials used in the passenger compartment are also of very high quality. From level 2 models the steering wheel is trimmed in full grain leather and incorporates black lacquered and satin chrome inserts. The seats can be specified in a cloth material combining PVC and Alcantara or with the Nappa leather option.

The new Peugeot 308 has been presented for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 10th September 2013 and sales are starting during autumn 2013 in Europe.

The instrument panel is located in a high position, over rather than through the compact-sized steering wheel, and is slender and perfectly integrated, extending as far as the touch screen. The cockpit effect is amplified by the orientation of the components towards the driver and by the high centre console, a feature characteristic of the higher segment vehicles. The instrument panel has been designed as a technological object of great precision. The instrument binacles are stretched over a significant width and the symmetrical rotation of the needles makes it easier to read the information arranged, over the compact steering wheel. This arrangement makes it more possible to focus the driver’s attention on the upper part of the instrument panel, so that they don’t have to deviate from their forward view of the road.

FOCUS - THE NEW PEUGEOT 308

The new PEUGEOT 308 offers connected services, PEUGEOT Connect Apps, and introduces a new application: Coyote. This service, which brings together more than two-million users in Europe, provides real time warnings of hazardous situations. The connectivity of the new PEUGEOT 308 is extensive. A special application permitting retrieval, on the user’s Smartphone, of the information from the vehicle (location, mileage, economy, lighting of warning lamps, etc.) is also currently being developed for spring 2014. The processing of this data will make it possible to offer practical services such as guidance to the location of the vehicle, servicing alerts, trip statistics, etc. This information will also be reported to the ‘My PEUGEOT’ customer portal. The ‘Scan my PEUGEOT’ Smartphone application is linked with the digital handbook present in the new PEUGEOT 308. It uses image recognition to allow the driver to instantly find the explanation of the operation of an item of equipment or the meaning of an alert warning lamp.

A reduction of 140kg With a 140kg reduction in weight the new PEUGEOT 308 is also the lightest vehicle in the segment. To achieve this performance, the designers used as their starting point the new EMP2 platform. It permits a breakthrough reduction in weight of around 70kg, in three key areas: - 27kg saved by using innovative steels, composites and aluminium - 10kg reduction obtained by means of innovative assembly processes - 33kg eliminated due to an optimised design To achieve the 140kg reduction in weight, a further 70kg was saved in addition to the reduction obtained through use of the platform. The weight of each component has been optimised while leaving its level of performance intact. So, the door strengtheners are in high strength steel, saving 15kg. The front and rear seat frames have been redesigned reducing their weight by 14kg. An innovative and light soundproofing material, preserving the acoustic qualities, has permitted a reduction of 9kg. As a world first, the tailgate is

formed using a composite thermoplastic material. This light and rigid material reduces the weight of the tailgate by 3kg. The compactness of the new PEUGEOT 308 provides, for its part, a reduction of 12kg and adds to all the grammes and kilogrammes saved part by part. Efficient and technological engines Latest generation petrol and diesel engines equip the new PEUGEOT 308 from launch: 3-cylinder petrol engine, THP block (International Engine of the Year 2013), e-HDi version. - 1.2-litre VTi 60kW - 82bhp (EB2) 114 g/km CO2 – 5-speed manual gearbox - 1.6-litre THP 92kW - 125bhp (EP6CDTD) 129*g/km CO2 – 6-speed manual gearbox - 1.6-litre THP 115kW - 155bhp (EP6CDT) 129*g/km CO2 – 6-speed manual gearbox - 1.6-litre HDi 68kW - 92bhp (DV6D) 93*g/km CO2 – 5-speed manual gearbox - 1.6-litre e-HDI 85kW - 115bhp (DV6C) 95*g/km CO2 – 6-speed manual gearbox * according to country, with Ultra Low Rolling Resistance tyres

From spring 2014, new technologies will be offered on the new PEUGEOT 308 including the innovative 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine (1.2-litre e-THP), BlueHDi versions with a record offering in the segment (82g/km and 3.1 l/100 km / 91mpg) and new generation 6-speed automatic gearboxes. - 1.2-litre e-THP 81kW - 110bhp – 5-speed manual gearbox – Euro 6 - 1.2-litre e-THP 96kW - 130bhp – 6-speed manual gearbox – Euro 6 - 1.2-litre e-THP 96kW - 130bhp – 6-speed automatic gearbox – Euro 6 - 1.6-litre BlueHDi 88kW - 120bhp – 6-speed manual gearbox – Euro 6 - 2.0-litre BlueHDi 110kW - 150bhp – 6-speed manual gearbox – Euro 6 - 2.0-litre BlueHDi 110kW - 150bhp – 6-speed automatic gearbox – Euro 6 The new generation 6-speed automatic gearboxes offered (AT6 III and AM6 III, supplied by Aisin) guarantee a high level of driving pleasure with rapid gear changes and improved economy as a consequence. The difference in terms of emissions of

CO2 compared to a manual gearbox is less than 10g/km. BlueHDi is the name given to the marque’s Euro 6 Diesel engines. Exclusively combining the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) function and the Diesel Particulate Filter with additive (DPF) for the Euro 6 Diesel emission control, the BlueHDi technology permits a 90% reduction in NOx, optimisation of the CO2 emissions with improved fuel economy and almost total elimination (99.9%) of particulates.

FOCUS - THE NEW PEUGEOT 308

Dynamism and manoeuvrability The driving experience of the new 308 is the result of continuous evolution in chassis development which has been characterised by PEUGEOT with expertise in this area for many years. The new 308 shares this prowess by further enhancing the best combination of ride and handling greatly enabled through the qualities of the new EMP2 platform. The repositioning of the components and the reduced height of the new PEUGEOT 308 make it possible to lower the centre of gravity by 20mm. The body stability is improved and it also favours the aerodynamic properties. The EMP2 platform brings new suspension (Pseudo McPherson at the front and deformable crossmember at the rear) the weight of which has been reduced.

The optimisation of the suspension and wheels makes it possible to improve the turning circle radius by 30cm (10.4m between kerbs) for benchmark manoeuvrability. At the rear, the innovative location of the damper, which crosses the arm improves its performance, favouring comfort and handling. For even more comfortable and safe driving, the new PEUGEOT 308 is equipped with driving aids. The Driver Assistance Pack, available as an option, incorporates three systems which utilises a radar located at the front of the vehicle: - Dynamic cruise control: This is a speed limiter/cruise control with extended functions - Emergency Collision Alert System: A visual and audible warning indicates to the driver that they should brake to prevent the collision - Emergency Collision Braking System: In the event of an imminent collision automatic braking is triggered to prevent the impact or reduce its consequences For the comfort and safety of all, the new PEUGEOT 308 is fitted, as standard or as an option, with a range of equipment: blind spot monitoring, electric handbrake, reversing camera using the large colour screen, keyless access and starting, Park Assist function (spring 2014).

LADA SPORT special The racing engineer of James Thompson is Marco Calovolo, one of the most expert technicians of the WTCC scene. As all the other manufactures engineers he has now to face the 2014 Championsip rules changes and he gives his comments about this revolution and the development of LADA Granta Sport car.

ADVERTORIAL

2014 : THE WTCC TECHNICAL REVOLUTION

M

r. Calovolo, from the point of view of a racing engineer what is your attitude towards new technical regulations? They will provide more freedom to modify the car. Will it be helpful for LADA? “New regulations are, for sure, very interesting from the technical point of view. Actually, we are making a new car, not only develop an existing car. This is a big challenge, and I believe, that LADA will benefit more than other competitors. The point is that with existing WTCC regulations we didn’t have much freedom to change some parts, to modify the car the way we wanted in order to compensate the small dimensions of our LADA Granta. Next year the rules will provide more freedom for engineers, we will have much wider car and will have a possibility to adjust something in a suspension. Perhaps we will benefit more, because we came into the Championship with a brand new car, and continued to develop it during the racing weekends, so we gathered a number of technical solutions, which will be used while creating a new evolution of LADA Granta. I mean we have an adjustable car, which is highly perceptive to various changes and engineering experiments. That is our advantage.” How is the process of developing a new car going? Which will be the hardest task for the engineers in terms of creating a new car? “Now we are going on some studies regarding aerodynamic package, but it’s fundamental, because the car will be much different to the car we have now. There will be much more down force, different body parts, bigger wing, bigger splitter. Also the mechanical parts are being studied now and the engine as well. In parallel we have started to design several parts of the car, the car will be ready by mid-February. The hardest task will be to find the best balance between all components of the car. I mean the engine will be much powerful, comparing to what we have now, the brakes will be bigger, there will be more down force, the car will be lighter. The fundamental thing is to have harmony between all these parts, and to have a car which is easy adjustable.”

What are the strong and weak points of LADA Granta? Do you already have solutions to turn its weak points into strong ones in the next season? “The strong point for sure is the top speed, that we have now. We are really competitive in the tracks with top speed over 230-250 km/h. Also the braking is very good. Lada Granta is strong in changing directions as well. The weak point is the speed in the medium and slow corners, where we struggle a lot with understeer. The good thing is that with the new regulations we can solve this problem.

VICTOR SHAPOVALOV “Motorsport has always been important for LADA – says Victor Shapovalov, LADA Sport Team Principal – as a way to promote the brand. WTCC gives the best opportunities to do that - races worldwide, large TVaudience, many spectators at the racetracks. The decision to get back to WTCC was made in 2012. We took part in two rounds in Hungary and Portugal with James at the wheel of a LADA Granta. It was a kind of test - to see where we were, what position we took among other participants. The car showed really impressive time. And we felt strong enough to participate in all races of the 2013 season. As for me personally, getting back to the Championship was a great challenge. We had a new Granta model, which was improved significantly comparing to the LADA Priora (our car in WTCC-2009). The racing car was developed vastly in many areas: aerodynamics, engine, speed, driveability. Compared to 2009, we now have a much more competitive race car. LADA Granta Sport was designed and built in Russia. In France the car underwent the final assembly stage. The engine was also installed in France at our technical base. To summarize the first 10 rounds of the season – continues Shapovalov – I can conclude that the team has made steady progress in terms of the car’s speed and reliability. We have had many Top 6 finishes (5th in Moscow, 6th in Porto – 2 times – 6th in Suzuka) and fastest warm-up times in both Austria and Russia. These results can’t be down to luck alone – it’s the result of hard work from the engineers, mechanics and drivers. I am delighted that we have showed that the team and the car are able to fight in the top five with the strongest teams competing on the world stage. We are feeling optimistic about the future. But when you are getting stronger in the championship of such a high level, it’s getting more difficult. The level of the leaders is very high and that sets a certain standard. We are ready for more persistent work and our optimistic results make our ambitions grow higher. We are ready to fight for the podium this year and I hope that our perfect teamwork will bring the results.”

HOLDEN VF UTE CONQUERS THE GREEN HELL! Holden’s new VF SS V Redline Ute has proven itself Australia’s ultimate sports machine and a worldbeating performance car by setting a world-record lap at the toughest racetrack on the planet – the famous Nürburgring in Germany. With Holden Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, at the wheel of the VF SS V Redline Ute the Australian performance icon posted a sizzling 8m 19.47sec lap – faster than many exotic sports cars costing several times more than the Ute.

“We came up with a plan to tackle the Nürburgring and break the world record for a commercial or utility vehicle but when we did our research it seemed one didn’t exist, so we decided to set a record instead! said Mr Trubiani - without a lap record to break, we sat down and calculated what we thought the Ute could do and targeted around 8min 30sec. Initial practice sessions at the track confirmed that was a stretch target so that’s what we aimed for. To slash 11 seconds from that time with an 8m 19.47sec lap was incredible. ROMEO FERRARIS bulletin

ADVERTORIAL

THE ROMEO FERRARIS TEAM TRIUMPHS IN CHINA! With 5 victories out of 6 races the Italian team wins the important PAN DELTA championship with a super-fast AMG Mercedes C63 “sister” of the cars used in the European Superstars Series.

P

erfect score so close and championship never in doubt. This could be the summary of the Chinese adventure of the Romeo Ferraris team, which has dominated the important Pan Delta championship with itspink Mercedes C 63 AMG, skillfully conducted to success by Mario Ferraris, which won five out of the six races in the calendar. This new important trophy has been added to the infinite collection of worldwide successes of the company founded in the late fifties by Romeo Ferraris. It is actually a great sporting victory, which confirms the quality of the work by the Italian technicians, but also a marketing success, a success that in all probability will open the doors to the most important market in the world.

R

aced entirely at the Zhuhai circuit (near Macao and Hong Kong), the Pan Delta championship gathers the best Gran Turismo and Tourism teams from all around China and having seen the Italian flag waving highest on the flagpole has been a source of great pride for the whole team.

ADVERTORIAL

“It is absolutely not a low level victory - Mario Ferraris quickly pointed out - motorsport in China is today making great strides and many teams can already be said to be at the same level of European or Japanese teams. I had to sweat a lot to win, especially fighting with the Mitsubishi Evo of a local team (which until the last race in early September could blow the title away from us) and a bunch of Subaru and BMW, all well prepared. The championship is beautiful - continues Ferraris - well organized and followed live on television. In our class Hero 1 there were always more than twenty drivers at the start while in the lower class, Hero 2, more than 30 cars took the grid. A very interesting reality that other European teams would do well to keep in mind ... more than twenty thousand people in the stands would be a dream in our continent!”

Mission accomplished, therefore, by the team and driver who are already thinking about the 2014 season: not only try to regain the championship in the top class with the competitive Mercedes AMG but also take on the smaller class with the “Cinquone Corsa”, the small “rocket” by Romeo Ferraris which has already won many races in Italy. Racing activity for the Romeo Ferraris team is just a way to promote the technical and engineering capabilities of the Milan-based company, that makes it one of Europe’s most appreciated realities in the field of tuning but not only. The story of Romeo Ferraris speaks of numerous engines enitirely designed and manufactured “in house” and able to win international competitions and even world titles in powerboat “off shore” racing. Today Romeo Ferraris has developed an all-round technological capability that allows its technical department to design engines or intervene on the motoring of each type of car as well as on electronics, suspension, brakes and aerodynamics. All accompanied by a touch of “Italian style” in the interior and bodywork of their cars that are not only excellent “machines” but also beautiful objects of design.

The Italian team have also entered in the Pan Delta series a Peugeot RCZ Cup, able to finish two time third in the Hero 2 class, driven by Alessandro Verzi

VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF & UP

VW BRINGS ZERO-EMISSION TECHNOLOGY TO HIGH-VOLUME PRODUCTION

From the middle of October, Volkswagen will be supercharging its model range with the brand’s first electric vehicle: the new e-up! The e-Golf car will be available from spring 2014. From now on, Volkswagen will thus be offering on its vehicles every form of drive system relevant in the world today.

T

he launch of the e-up! marks the introduction of a next generation electric vehicle that thanks to an armada of innovative detailed solutions uses energy extremely economically. The e-up! consumes, for instance, just 11.7 kWh/100 km. At an average electricity price of 25.8 cents (Germany, July 2013), driving 100 kilometres costs just €3.02. The pioneering efficiency of the e-up! is attributable to the very good cD value for a car of this size of 0.308 (4 per cent lower than the take up!), optimised rolling resistance (7 per cent lower), the generally energy-saving drive system components, the highly effective regenerative braking system, innovative equipment modules and a newly developed air-conditioning system. A compact electric motor (60 kW / 82 PS and 210 Nm starting torque), the lithium-ion battery inte-

grated into the floor and the power electronics form the hub of the new high-tech car’s drive system. The electric motor’s power is transferred to the front wheels via a single-speed gearbox. Volkswagen itself developed all of the components, including the battery. With a top speed of 130 km/h, the average range of the e-up!, dependent on route profile, driving style and payload, is between 120 and 160 km; at very low outdoor temperatures the range may be less. These range distances work especially well in urban areas and for the majority of commuters. After 4.9 seconds the e-up! is going at a speed of 60 km/h; within 12.4 seconds it’s 100 km/h. In 10.5 seconds it accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h. Top speed is 130 km/h. By way of comparison: the most powerful conventional e-up! (with 55 kW / 75 PS) accelerates from 0 to 100

THE GREEN SIDE - VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF & UP

km/h in 13.2 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in fourth gear in 15.5 seconds. The comparison shows that the e-up! blows away prejudiced views about the performance of electric cars. Lithium-ion battery The lithium-ion battery fitted in the e-up! into the vehicle floor weighs 230 kg and is made up of 17 modules, each with 12 cells. These 204 cells add up to a rated voltage of 374 V and rated power of 18.7 kWh. At peak level the cells provide an effective power output of 75 kW and over a continual period 35 kW. The cell modules of the battery, measuring 1,726 mm long, 1,132 mm wide and 303 mm at its highest point, have been integrated, as already indicated, in space-saving fashion within the floor of the e-up!. Compared to other lithium-ion cells (e.g. from the field of consumer electronics), the battery system’s cells are particularly resistant to heat and cold, meaning that no separate battery cooling or heating is required. Another central element of the drive system is what is known as the power electronics. This complex module weighs 10.5 kg in the e-up! and, acting as the link, controls the flow of high-voltage power between the e-motor and the lithium-ion battery (depending on battery voltage between 296 and up to 418 V). In doing so the power electronics convert the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC) and use this to drive the motor. Via a DC/DC converter it also supplies the vehicle’s circuitry with voltage of 12 V. In respect of the all-controlling power electronics a distinction has to be made between two fundamentally different modes in which the e-motor operates: motor mode (propulsion) and generator mode (regenerative braking). In motor mode the power electronics use high-power transistors to convert the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into 3-phase alternating current (AC). In generator mode, meanwhile, the alternating current is rectified for charging the battery. In this scenario the power electronics resemble in terms of their task a valve that lets the electrical current flow only towards the battery to be charged. This maximum

The e-up! comes as standard

with the portable maps + more navigation system, complete with Bluetooth hands-free facility. In the e-up! it provides numerous new functions, such as range display (‘360° range’). In this mode a map of the surrounding region shows the radius of the area that can be reached with the current level of charge

phase current of the power electronics is limited in the e-up! to 385 A. As mentioned above, the 2.5-kW DC/DC converter integrated into the power electronics is responsible for supplying the vehicle’s 12-V power circuit and thus works like a transformer. The 12-V power circuit and the high-voltage circuit are completely separate from each other in the vehicle. Also included in the power electronics are the controller for running the management software and a CAN interface for communication with control devices. Last but not least, the power electronics module dampens the effects of any sudden loading of the drive system (for instance, at moments of sudden acceleration) by regulating the torque accordingly.

THE GREEN SIDE - VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF & UP

Electric cars are essentially equipped with two brake systems independent of each other: on the one hand, as in conventional cars, a mechanical, hydraulically operated brake system is there to slow the car down. At the same time, however, the e-motor acts when recovering energy as a motor brake. These two types of braking now blend together in the e-up! thanks to the electromechanical brake servo. A question of style The other specific functions of the e-up! used while driving the car are practically self-explanatory. You have to think of the car’s tank as a battery filled with electrical energy that empties during the journey. The faster you drive or the more you accelerate, the greater the amount of energy consumed. However, as the driver you have considerable influence over this level of consumption and thus over the range. The e-up! is able to switch off temporarily unneeded consumers and in general to transform kinetic energy – produced when coasting or by braking – into electrical energy and to store it in the battery. The range of the e-up! can be varied via three different driving style profiles: the standard mode (automatically on), ‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’. Anyone nipping around travelling short distances, will stay in standard mode. For drivers wanting to extend the range, the first option is the ‘Eco’ mode. The

effects of selecting this mode include paring back the e-vehicle’s maximum power output to 50 kW and limiting its top speed to 115 km/h. In parallel with that the electronics reduce the output of the air-conditioning system and modify the response curve of the accelerator pedal. In ‘Eco+’ mode the electronics limit maximum power output to 40 kW, modify the performance response curve and disable the air conditioning; in this mode the car can reach a top speed of 90 km/h. Over and above the driving style modes the range of the e-up! can be influenced via the regenerative braking function. In an electric car this number of levels leads to a different way of driving. By means of regenerative braking drivers can appreciably slow down the e-up! by lifting their foot off the accelerator. Used in an anticipatory way, regenerative braking thus replaces use of the brake pedal in many situations. At levels ‘D2’, ‘D3’ and ‘B’, the deceleration via regenerative braking is so strong that in this case the brake lights automatically come on. If the battery is fully charged, no regenerative braking occurs. Plugs, wall box and charging stations To recharge the e-up! you simply connect it to the mains. However, there are various ways that this can be done. The simplest option is to plug the mains charging cable supplied with the car into a conventional 230-volt socket. The battery is then charged from the mains at a power level of 2.3 kW. A completely flat battery is recharged in this way within nine hours. As an option Volkswagen offers a wall box for the garage that charges the battery at a power level of 3.6 kW. The (completely flat) battery would thus be fully recharged after six hours. There are also public charging stations that ‘refuel’ electric cars at a power level of 3.6 kW. As a new car the e-up! can also be prepared for the combined charging system (CCS) using a DC power supply. In this case it can alternatively be ‘refuelled’ via special CCS charging stations at power levels of up to 40 kW. The battery is then 80 per cent recharged after just 30 minutes. Volkswagen has developed a range of features and design elements specifically for the e-up!. The elec-

The advantage of having the car’s

interior warmed up or cooled down while the battery is being charged (apart from the added comfort) is that you do not affect the battery’s charge level by any initial heating or cooling before starting up. As a result the battery’s full range is available to you as you start your journey

that are scheduled according to the programmed departure time include the park heater/ventilation function; it is started at a specific time that depends on the outdoor temperature, so that the desired interior temperature is reached by the programmed departure time

Ready to drive Although the electric motor is indeed on, it produces neither noise nor vibrations. And as for the rev counter, there is none. The e-up! signals its readiness to its driver via routines specially designed for the purpose. When the car is started and ready to go, the speedometer needle pegs to the end stop once and then returns to the home position. The illumination of the indicators on the e-up! instrument panel is also switched on, regardless of whether the car’s outside lights are on or not. At the same time the battery charge indicator rotates to the current level and the power indicator moves from ‘Off’ to ‘0’. Last but not least, the word ‘Ready’ appears in the panel’s central display, backed up by an audible signal.

tric car can thus be quickly identified as such. The array of bespoke features includes the LED daytime running light’s new signature look, aerodynamically developed alloy wheels and an interior in a bright and friendly design. The standard e-up! equipment also includes applications for the maps + more infotainment/navigation system programmed specifically for e-mobility, a radio/CD system, hands-free phone function, four doors, heated windscreen, air conditioning and heated seats.

e-Golf: coming soon Both agile and efficient, the e-Golf offers a low power consumption figure of 12.7 kW/100 km. Thanks to a particularly innovative overall technological system, improved aerodynamics (cD = 0.281) and perfected rolling resistance the e-Golf will be cruising as of spring 2014 (when the European launch begins) extremely economically around the cities of the world (launches in Asia and North America will follow in late 2014 / early 2015) with an energy costs of around €3.28 per 100 km (calculated in Germany, as of July 31, 2013: €0.258 per kWh.) The very well equipped four-door e-Golf is recognisable at once by the aerodynamically optimised ‘Astana’ alloy wheels and and by its LED headlights. Another striking feature is the bottom strip across the radiator grille. As on the Golf GTI, but in this case blue rather than red, this strip carries on into the headlights – an element that, like the ‘Think Blue.’ campaign, consciously underlines the electrically powered Golf’s environmentally friendly efficiency. The e-Golf is powered by an 85 kW1 / 115 PS1 electric motor. From a standing start the synchronous motor (internally called the EEM 85) develops an impressive maximum torque of 270 Nm. Top performance figures are the result: the Volkswagen reaches a speed of 60 km/h within 4.2 seconds, and after just 10.4 seconds the e-Golf is up to

100 km/h. The high-performance 12,000-rpm motor and, also developed by Volkswagen, the single-speed gearbox (EQ 270) with integrated differential and mechanical parking brake form a compact module. The motor/gearbox unit is made in Volkswagen’s components plant in Kassel, Germany. Depending on route profile, driving style and payload, the driving range is between 130 and 190 km; at very low outdoor temperatures, driving range may lie below these figures. Good range will be ensured not only in fine weather but in the winter too by a newly developed, optional heat pump. Offered as an add-on module for the electric heating (high-voltage heater) and the electric air conditioning compressor, the heat pump utilises both the heat from the ambient air and the heat given off by the drive system components. In this way the high-voltage heater’s consumption of electric power is significantly reduced. Through use of the heat pump the e-Golf’s range increases in winter by up to 20 per cent. The Golf Mk7 was developed from the outset as a version which could use an electric powertrain. By virtue of the innovative flexibility of the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), on which the current Golf design is based, Volkswagen was able to integrate the lithium-ion battery in spacesaving fashion within a stabilising frame in the vehicle floor (under the front and rear seats and in the area of the centre tunnel). Like the motor elements of the powertrain, the battery was also developed in-house at Volkswagen. The e-Golf has a kerb weight of 1,510 kg, of which 318 kg are accounted for by the lithium-ion battery. It is made up of a total of 264 individual cells, which are integrated into 27 modules (each with six or twelve cells). The cells add up to a nominal voltage of 323 V. Battery capacity: 24.2 kWh. When the car is not in use or in the event of a crash, power from the battery is automatically cut off. The power electronics module A central element of the drive system is the power electronics module. Acting as the link, this module controls the flow of high-voltage energy betwe-

en the e-motor and the lithium-ion battery. In the process the power electronics module converts the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC). The power electronics therefore have the following interfaces: the traction circuit connection to the battery; the 3-phase connection to the e-motor; the plug connector from the DC/DC converter to the 12-V power circuit and a connection for the high-voltage power distributor. As with the smaller e-up!, there are several different ways of charging the battery in the e-Golf. As the conventional solution, the charging cable supplied as standard with the car is plugged into a 230-volt mains electrical socket. The battery of the e-Golf is charged in this way at a charge level of 2.3kW of alternating current (AC) from the mains. If it is completely flat, it will be fully charged again within a maximum of 13 hours. As an optional extra Volkswagen is offering a wall box for the garage or carport. This charges at a level of 3.6 kW. If completely flat (which in practice is rare), the battery would thus be fully charged again after around eight hours. There are also public charging stations that ‘refuel’ electric cars at a power level of 3.6 kW. The e-Golf can also optionally be prepared for the combined charging system (CCS) using a DC power supply. In this case the Volkswagen can be recharged via special CCS charging stations at power levels of up to 40 kW, allowing the battery to be charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. Driving profiles and regenerative braking Two technologies of primary importance in relation to optimal utilisation of the vehicle’s energy are the two driving profiles designed for energy economy (‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’) and the four different levels of regenerative braking (‘D1’, ‘D2’, ‘D3, and ‘B’). The e-Golf is equipped as standard with three driving profiles: ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’. The Volkswagen is automatically started in ‘Normal’ mode. For drivers wanting to extend the range, the first option is the ‘Eco’ mode. The effects of selecting this mode include paring back the e-motor’s maximum power output to 70 kW and the starting

torque to 220 Nm. In parallel, the electronics reduce the output of the air conditioning system and modify the response curve of the accelerator pedal. The e-Golf can now reach speeds of up to 115 km/h (in ‘Normal’ mode: 140 km/h) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds (in ‘Normal’ mode: 10.4 seconds). In ‘Eco+’ mode the electronics limit the power output to 55 kW and the starting torque to 175 Nm. At the same time the accelerator pedal response curve becomes even flatter and the air conditioning is switched off. The e-Golf now reaches a top speed of 90 km/h and accelerates at a correspondingly slower rate. Nevertheless, via kickdown – in ‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’ mode – drivers can still obtain full power, maximum torque and a top speed of 140 km/h1. In addition to the driving mode function, the range can also be influenced using the regenerative braking system. Level ‘D1’ regenerates energy and slows down the car the least, while level ‘B’ has the strongest effect. At levels ‘D2’, ‘D3’ and ‘B’, the deceleration via regenerative braking is so strong that in this case the brake lights automatically come on. However, if the battery is fully charged, no energy regeneration takes place. In this case, the braking power also reduces, which the driver can feel intuitively. By developing very specific measures such as reducing the volume of cooling air (via a radiator shutter and partially enclosed radiator grille), new underbody panelling, modification of the tail with a rear spoiler and C-pillar air guides, and by developing new aerodynamic wheels (largely closing off the wheel openings flush with the car’s exterior), Volkswagen was able to lower the Golf’s air drag. Whereas on the standard Golf air drag is 0.686 m², the company was able to reduce this to 0.615 m² on the e-Golf, thus improving it by 10 per cent. Similarly, the cD value was improved to 0.281. Volkswagen was also able to achieve another positive effect on energy consumption and range through optimisation of the tyres (205/55 R16 91 Q). Reducing the rolling resistance coefficient from 7.2 per 1,000 (Golf BlueMotion) to 6.5 per 1,000 for the e-Golf (likewise an improvement of 10 per cent) also improves the range.

THE GREEN SIDE - VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF & UP

Exclusive standard equipment In addition to the specific fabric design (seats in the ‘Merlin e-grey / Clip titanium black’ pattern; optionally leather) and the extremely good level of standard equipment striking features in the interior of the e-Golf include the new instrument layout and the touchscreen in the centre console, which is also equipped with new functions. In line with the exterior, the interior is also enhanced by blue elements, including the decorative seams of the leather steering wheel and gear knob, plus the floormat edgings. On the left-hand side of the instrument cluster the rev counter is replaced by the power display (which indicates if the motor is ready, the battery is being charged via regenerative braking or power is being drawn off) and the indicator of output availability. Still on the right as a corresponding instrument is the speedometer, in this case going up to 160 km/h. Added to the bottom section of the speedometer is an indicator showing the charge level of the high-voltage battery. On the colour display (premium multifunction display) between the power display and the speedometer, features now include a permanent indication of the driving range, of the currently active level of regenerative braking and an indication of the remaining charging time and of the type of charging connection. In a separate LED field in the lower segment of the multifunction display, the ‘READY’ message also appears after starting the motor, indicating readiness for the car to be driven.

HERE Auto Companion, a customizable mobile and web application, keeps drivers connected outside of the car allowing them to synchronize their favorite places and routes across their devices so that they won’t need to re-enter their route when they get in the driver’s seat. Car makers can tap assets from the existing HERE suite such as walking navigation, public transit routes and even indoor venue maps to build custom mobile applications. Drivers could use the app to re-

motely find their car with their device using LiveSight augmented reality technology and check the car’s vital stats such as fuel levels and tire pressure. HERE Traffic has been radically improved by “Halo,” the new engine that processes data quickly and accurately. Every month HERE Traffici s collecting ever greater numbers of high-quality data, such as probe points and sensor information to deliver real-time information such as weather, traffic congestion, road construction and other factors that affect a drive. With the new Traffic product drivers get improved travel time estimates, so they can better plan their routes and quickly re-route on the go. HERE has also recently annouced it has partnered with the Mercedes-Benz division of Daimler and two of the world’s automotive system integrators, Continental Corporation and Magneti Marelli. These partners are building on the HERE Connected Driving framework to offer individual connected products and services that go beyond navigation to meet their differing needs.

PROVIDE FUEL-EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS FOR GLOBAL AUTOMAKERS

GLOBAL NEWS

enneco unveiled its latest developments in clean air emissions technologies at theFrankfurt Motor Show (Hall 5.1, Stand A16). The company is leveraging its expertise in systems integration, thermal management, materials science and predictive tooling to launch a new set of advanced solutions that help global vehicle manufacturers meet future emissions legislation worldwide.“Tenneco’s suite of clean air technologies are specifically designed to enable reduction of NOx, particulate matter mass and number, as well as hydrocarbons and CO2 - all mandates for the next wave of U.S. Tier 3 and EU6 and 7 emissions legislation - said Tim Jackson, executive vice president - combined with our experience in systems integration, engineering and design and expanded global footprint, we’re providing customers with solutions that can be implemented anywhere in the world today - without compromising vehicle performance or durability.”

Hydrocarbon Manifold Dosing. Tenneco is taking its expertise in clean air technology and systems integration to the next level with its hydrocarbon manifold dosing solution, which injects diesel fuel directly into the engine manifold, providing more efficient regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. Today’s diesel engines typically conduct late fuel injection, which decreases the overall engine efficiency and creates oil dilution. With Tenneco’s hydrocarbon dosing solution, the HC dosing vaporizer and injector are integrated into the engine manifold. The hot environment there helps to evaporate the fuel quickly, which in turn aids in optimizing distribution of hydrocarbon oxidation and mixing performance. Tenneco’s manifold dosing solution is also compact, making it easy to integrate and cost-effective. The system is currently being tested with several global OEMs. Compact Mixing Zone. When used with SDPF technology that integrates SCR and DPF functionality in one module, Tenneco’s unique compact mixing zone solution helps to ensure efficient conversion of injected urea droplets into the desired ammonia without the formation of deposits, especially in low temperature applications. Further, the compact mixing zone in combination with the SDPF may reduce the overall size of the aftertreatment system, enabling reduced packaging. Gasoline Particulate Filter. Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) technology is being developed to help customers meet EU6c emissions regulations for 2017 model year vehicles. Beginning in 2017, EU6c mandates that vehicles must have an emissions particulate number of no more than 6*1011particles/km. While vehicles equipped with GDI engines enable improved fuel economy and emit less CO2, they often have higher particulate numbers, due to shorter fuel/air mixing times in the cylinder compared to PFI engines. Tenneco has several concepts on test for its GPF solution, including coated and uncoated filters, which can help improve filtration efficiency and decrease the amount of PN significantly. Electrical Valves for Low Pressure EGR. These fully variable backpressure control valves are designed specifically for low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems for diesel engines. Controlled by an electric actuator, Tenneco’s Electrical Valve expertly and continuously fine- tunes the position of the exhaust flap to help achieve optimal backpressure. When combined with the OEM’s low pressure EGR system, the electrical valve can help the EGR system achieve NOx emissions reductions of up to 50 percent, with little impact on exhaust system weight or performance.

FIRST MONTECARLO RASCASSE DELIVERED IN GERMANY Montecarlo Automobile, the first motor-car producer in Monaco, has announced the delivery of the first ecological supercar, the Montecarlo Automobile Rascasse. The car was first presented a few months ago at the

International Autopromotec fair in Bologna. With its removable roof, it was purchased by a German collector who will now be able to unleash the potential of the Rolls Royce-derived Silver Seraph V12 5500 cc, 500 bhp engine. What makes this car unusual is it petrol/ GPL bifuel engine that results in a reduction in CO2 emissions. This technical solution was developed in collaboration with BRC, overseen by Mariano Costamagna, a leading company in the realisation of alternative fuel engines. The Rascasse will be produced in a limited edition of 15 models in three years, costs €500,000 and can be extensively personalised. Montecarlo Automobile will now proceed with the creation of other cars based on client requests: a hybrid 4WD is already in the development phase. As ever, the project was overseen by engineer and driver Fulvio Maria Ballabio, a man with a background in the best-known international series, from Formula series and Prototype Endurance championships to off-shore nautical races.
