outstanding event with truly stunning scenery, the 2013 Rally Cape Horn will long be remembered by everyone who competed. The Endurance Rally Association’s inaugural Rally Cape Horn reached its climax on December 4th as the cars past the finish line in Ushuaia, Argentina, with all-American duo of Pamela and Chuck Lyford in their Vintageant 1938 Chevrolet Fangio Coupe taking first place. The British team of Clinton Smith and Trevor Finn finished a close second in their 1938 Chevy Coupe, with Olaf Pothoven and Monica Pothoven-Fels of the Netherlands taking the final place on the podium in their 1935 Bentley Derby. The classic class, meanwhile, was won by the British team of Paul and Sandra Merryweather in their 1974 Mercedes 450 SL with Alastair Caldwell and Laurel Smith taking silver in their 1968 280 SL. Third place went to Belgians Christian Dumolin and Regine Dumolin-Petillion in the 1966 Ford Mustang GT 289. Over the rally’s twenty days the teams encountered thunder storms, rain, sleet, sunshine and snow. There was drama right from day one with ex-McLaren racing team manager Alistair Caldwell just one of the casualties who worked with rally’s technicians late into the night to rectify a Headgasket issue on his 1968 Mercedes 280SL. Following the footsteps of Che Guevara, the rally took in stunning views of the Andes before beginning the climb up to Cordoba, with condors watching from high above.

day five, enroute to Santiago, Chile, disaster struck for David and Sadie Williams the then leaders of the Vintageant category. They were found laid up, missing one rear wheel, bearing shattered and half shaft separated but fellow competitors came to their aid to get them back in the race.

With gravel replacing tarmac, the harsh conditions took their toll on the cars leading to several more incidents, with engine mounts and punctures being typical of the problems encountered. The distances were starting to have an impact on the cars. The rally crossed back into Chile, with the cars and drivers taking to the water on the penultimate day with a two and half-hour voyage across the Southern Ocean. After the crossing, the rally followed the coast and made their final border crossing, back into Argentina for the final, 20th day. The competitors faced full blizzard conditions as they made their way towards the finish line, with freezing temperatures to match. Snow ploughs allowed the rally to continue and once in Ushuaia the awards ceremony could commence with the winners warmly congratulated. Away from the serious silverware, competitors were also awarded with prizes for ‘best in rally bodywork modification’ the ‘silliest hat’ and ‘cleanest interior’ highlighting the lighter side of Endurance Rallying.

LAMBORGHINI Huracán

With the brand new Huracán Lamborghini is presenting the successor to the iconic Gallardo. Starting from January 2014 the Huracán will be the protagonist of over 130 private preview events in more than 60 cities throughout the world. It will make its world public debut at the Geneva Auto Show 2014. The new Huracán, has been developed from scratch down to the very last detail and, like the Gallardo and most other Lamborghini models, derives its name from the world of bullfighting. The fighting bull Huracán of the Spanish Conte de la Patilla breed was known for his outstanding courage and strong sense of attack. He fought in Alicante in August 1879, showing his unrelenting character and remaining defiant and invincible,

thus entering into the legend of fighting bulls’ history. The new Huracán revolutionizes the design language of the Gallardo and is pure in its lines: precise technology and top level craftsmanship meet an audacious design with sharp edges, monolithic and sculptured volumes and precise surfaces. The interior is dominated by an innovative cockpit. A 12.3 inch full-color TFT instrument panel delivers all car information to the driver, from rev counter to navigation maps and infotainment functions. The new 5.2 liter V10 engine delivers a maximum power of 448 kW / 610 HP at 8,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 560 Nm at 6.500 rpm. In the new “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” (IDS), direct and indirect gasoline injections are smartly combined.

This results in more power and torque with lower fuel consumption and emissions compared with the Gallardo V10 engine. The top speed of over 325 km/h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 9.9 seconds only partially describe the dynamic experience at the wheel of the Huracán. The power of the V10 engine is brought to the road via the new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission “Lamborghini Doppia Frizione” (LDF) and fully electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. The different driving modes of the Huracán can be selected via a driving dynamics selector switch in the steering wheel – from traction-oriented on the road to extreme performance on the race track, with three setups of the dynamics system: STRADA, SPORT and CORSA.

The Huracán is produced at the Automobili Lamborghini headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese on an entirely newly-equipped production line. Delivery to the first customers is planned for spring 2014.

Showcasing

exciting and modern styling, the Honda FCEV Concept features sweeping character lines underscored by an ultra-aerodynamic body. The Honda FCEV Concept also delivers ample passenger space and seating for 5-passengers thanks to new powertrain packaging efficiencies. “The Honda FCEV Concept hints at Honda’s future direction for fuel-cell vehicles - said Tetsuo Iwamura, president and CEO of American Honda Motor - while this car is a concept, it points toward a very real future.”

Next Generation Honda Fuel Cell-Electric Vehicle Honda’s next generation fuel cell-electric vehicle launching in 2015 will feature the world’s first application of a fuel-cell powertrain packaged completely in the engine room of the vehicle, allowing for efficiencies in cabin space as well as flexibility in the potential application of FC technology to multiple vehicle types in the future. Significant technological advancements to the fuel-cell stack have yielded more than 100kW of power output. The power density is now 3kW/L,

an increase of 60 percent, with the stack size reduced 33-percent compared to the FCX Clarity. The next generation Honda FCEV is anticipated to deliver a driving range of more than 300 miles with a quick refueling time of about three minutes at a pressure of 70 MPa. “The Honda FCEV Concept not only sets our direction for our next generation fuel-cell vehicle in 2015, but for future improvements in electric drive technology - said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of American Honda Motor - the advancements we are making are substantial, meaningful and very real.”

Honda Fuel-Cell Leadership Honda has led the industry for nearly two decades in the development and deployment of fuel-cell technology through extensive real world testing, including the first government fleet deployment and retail customer leasing program. Honda has made significant technological advancements in fuel-cell operation in both hot and sub-freezing weather, meeting stringent emissions requirements and safety regulations since the introduction of its first generation fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX in 2002. Honda began leasing its firstgeneration FCEV, the Honda FCX, in 2002 and has deployed vehicles in the U.S. and Japan, including its successor, the FCX Clarity, which was named the 2009 World Green Car. Honda has delivered these vehicles to individual retail consumers in the U.S. and collected valuable data concerning realworld use of fuel cell-electric vehicles and hydrogen stations. Honda’s current fuel cell-electric vehicle, the FCX Clarity, launched in July 2008 and was quickly heralded as a technological breakthrough in the areas of design, packaging and efficiency. As the world’s first dedicated fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity features a striking silhouette and a low-slung cabin. With the V-flow fuel cell stack positioned down the centre of the vehicle and the electric motor located in the front of the vehicle, Honda was able to maintain the Clarity’s futuristic styling while delivering 240 miles of driving range. In the effort to speed the advance of a refuelling infrastructure, in May 2013, American Honda joined the public-private partnership H2USA, which brings together automakers,

government agencies, hydrogen suppliers and the hydrogen and fuel-cell industries to coordinate research and identify cost-effective solutions to deploy infrastructure that can deliver affordable, clean hydrogen fuel in the United States. In July 2013, Honda entered into a long-term collaborative agreement with General Motors to co-develop the next-generation of fuelcell systems and hydrogen storage technologies, aiming for the 2020 timeframe. The collaboration expects to succeed by sharing technological expertise, economies of scale and common sourcing strategies. The original FCX became the first EPA- and CARB-certified fuel-cell vehicle in July 2002. The FCX also was the world’s first production fuel-cell vehicle, introduced to the U.S. and Japan in December 2002.

INFINITI Q50

PASSION and PRECISION

The Infiniti Q50 has all the credentials needed to be the inspirational alternative to the familiar user-chooser choices in the business car sector with highly competitive whole-life costs. Johann de Nysschen, President, Infiniti Motor Company: “The Q50 embodies everything that Infiniti stands for: dramatic yet seductive design, agile performance and the highest levels of intuitive technology. And it is a true drivers’ car”

(

INFINITI Q50

(

In

a departure from the familiar design themes of the segment, where nine out of 10 cars hail from Germany, the Infiniti Q50 tries to be something different, its high tension surfaces and powerfully flowing lines finding their inspiration in natural forms rather than geometry. As a result the Q50 shows an emotional design, a fresh face whose self-confidence is summed up by its striking new headlight signature and distinctive crescent-cut C-pillar. The Q50 embodies in a spacious four-door saloon body many of the design cues of Infiniti’s trilogy of exceptional concept cars – Essence, Etherea and Emerg-E – that over the past four years have helped define the brand’s uniquely seductive and individual appeal.

“The Q50 has Infiniti design DNA running through it - says Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director - a concept car to us is far more than a motor show indulgence. It is the canvas on which we paint our production car dreams. Now with the Q50 we see those dreams become real.” But it is not only the Q50’s exterior design that has been influenced by the Infiniti concept car trilogy – the interior too has benefited from designs and materials from Essence, Etherea and Emerg-E. “Concept cars make the ideal test bed for the craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology that no Infiniti would be complete without - added Alfonso Albaisa - the materials and designs explored in the concept cars have had a big impact on the Q50, and are a large part of the reason the interior is so special.”

Infiniti cars with Bose® surround sound are renowned for their ability to recreate the acoustics of a live concert. Thanks to a world-first development by Bose, the new Infiniti Q50 takes the music to another level – by ensuring listeners don’t just feel to be part of the performance, but to be enjoying it from the best seats in the house.

Painstaking attention to detail and high quality finish are further examples of the influence the concept trilogy have wrought on the Q50. For example, the Q50’s body brings not just a flowing new elegance to the class but construction techniques so precise that panel fit is among the best available. The Q50’s shape is aerodynamic as well as seductive, with the zero lift concept body achieving an excellent Cd of 0.26 in standard form. Interior design: technology in perfect harmony The Q50’s interior has an emphasis on natural elegance, spacious rear passenger accommodation and the signature craftsmanship. A dual cockpit feel is achieved by a dashboard that flows around in a subtle “double wave” formation and by an asymmetrical centre section. With soft curves, contrasting surfaces and a precision finish, the design is both welcoming and also driver-centric. All key controls are located to be operated so the driver does not need to change driving posture. Enhancing the in-command feeling is a control layout that majors on ergonomic human/ machine interface. This is in part thanks to the Q50 being one of the first cars to feature dual touch-screens, leading to a significant decluttering of the dashboard. With the longest wheelbase in the class at 2850mm, the Q50 has plenty of room for adult passengers front and back; rear kneeroom is among the best in class. Particular attention has been paid to easy entry and egress. The rear seat is split 60/40 (not Hybrid) for when extra luggage capacity is needed, and there is access to the boot via the centre armrest (not Hybrid) so that long objects, such as skis, can be carried along with rear seat passengers.

The letter Q has been synonymous with Infiniti since the luxury performance brand from Japan launched its first model, the iconic Q45, almost a quarter of a century ago. Since then the letter has been an integral part of Infiniti’s success story in markets such as the USA. Now the Q50 is the first of a new generation of Infiniti models that once again will be known by the letter Q or, for the crossovers, by QX. The Q50 is the first Infiniti to be badged according to the new nomenclature, but other models will follow soon to build a complete Infiniti Q model range.

The Infiniti Q50 is a car with a great memory for names, and faces, and seat positions, and cabin temperatures and routes home… The Infiniti Q50 can remember the personal settings for up to four people – three registered users and one guest – covering the areas of life on board, dynamic performance and safety technology.

(

INFINITI Q50

(

Powerful looks, powerful platform The powerful looks are based on an equally powerful platform, a bespoke version of Infiniti’s latest chassis technology. Double wishbone front suspension and multilink rear (with Dual Flow Path shock absorbers) guarantee handling poise and precision whilst improving ride comfort. Handling is further enhanced by a stiffer body structure and, thanks to many aluminium components, lower body weight. Sport versions, with their reprofiled front bumper section and even sharper looks, get sports-tuned suspension as well as upgraded brake rotors with 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear. All Q50s has been designed to work with third-generation run-flat tyres for the convenience and safety of owners. Infiniti is bringing steering into the 21st century with world-first electronic steer-by-wire technology. Having its debut on certain models in the Q50 range, Direct Adaptive Steering is a key ingredient in making the Q50 one of the most dynamic sports saloons on the market as well as offering the driver the ability to customise steering feel for the first time in this class. Light for manoeuvring, firmer and more agile for sporty driving and challenging roads, Direct Adaptive Steering makes all options available via simple touchscreen controls. Uniquely in the class, both steering weight and response (gearing) can be tailored, with all settings stored for each driver in the Q50’s sophisticated memory. Direct Adaptive Steering works by electronically transferring the driver’s input to the front wheels where a high-response actuator drives the steering rack. By eliminating the mechanical losses that can slow the responses in conventional systems, steering response

is faster and vibration at the steering wheel non-existent. A further benefit of Direct Adaptive Steering is that it comes with Infiniti’s latest driving technology, Active Lane Control. ALC is the most effective and sophisticated lane-keeping system yet developed because it is the only one to use the steering to ensure the car stays between lane markings. While memory functions vary between countries and Q50 models, engines and transmissions, a constant ingredient is the new Infiniti Drive Mode Selector, fitted to every model. Operated by a switch on the centre console, the selector offers performance choices that include Standard, Sport, Eco (not diesel), Snow (automatic only) and Personal. Depending on country and model, Personal is the custom setting where a driver can choose his or her ideal performance feel, not just engine and transmission changes but also steering weight and response type on vehicles equipped with Infiniti’s steer-by-wire Direct Adaptive Steering system.

Safety Shield: more complete than ever The Q50’s dynamic envelope is completed by the availability of more high-tech systems under the Safety Shield umbrella, all of them designed to enhance the drive. The newest, predictive Forward Collision Warning, is another world-first technology: it doesn’t just react to the speed/distance of the car in front, but also the car in front of that. Other systems available on the Q50 include Intelligent Brake Assist Plus, Lateral Stability Enhancement, Active Trace Control, Back-up Collision Intervention (automatic transmission only), High Beam Assistant, Around View Monitor – now with Moving Object Detection – as well as many of the safety and security technologies already found in other Infiniti models: Intelligent Cruise Control with Full Speed Range, Distance Control Assist, Blind Spot Warning and Blind Spot Intervention, and Forward Collision Avoidance Assist.

Direct Response technology The Q50 3.5h’s homologated figures confirm what Infiniti has long believed – that for the ultimate ‘no compromise’ approach to both performance and efficiency in a gasoline engine nothing beats hybrid power. Direct Response technology – a powerful electric helping-hand applying extra torque to the powertrain exactly when it is needed – guarantees the Q50 3.5h a place in the top echelons of European high performance sports saloons. From a standing start 0-100km/h takes just 5.1 seconds, faster even than the Infiniti M35h currently listed in Guinness World Records as the world’s fastest accelerating hybrid car. The 364PS Q50 3.5h shares the same intelligent dual-clutch Direct Response system and 7-speed automatic transmission as the M35h, but with changes to improve performance, extend its electric-only range and allow for an outstanding cargo capacity for a hybrid in this class. The Adaptive Shift Control automatic transmission features Downshift

Through a joint research program with Yamazaki Laboratory at Keio University, using a seat simulator and a musculo-skeletal model for seating analysis, Infiniti engineers came up with a new design and structure for the “spinal support” front seats fitted to the Q50. Offering continuous support for the spine from the pelvis to the chest, the seats have been shown in tests to improve a person’s circulation by 15 per cent, allowing many more people to be able to travel long distances in the Q50 without discomfort.

Rev Matching and manual shift mode via available steering column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters. The performance is matched by a remarkable level of efficiency – with fuel consumption on the combined cycle of 6.2 l/100km (45.6mpg) and CO2 emissions of 144g/km. The Q50 3.5 Hybrid is available in both rear and all-wheel drive forms in Europe. True to Infiniti form, the Q50 3.5h retains the linear response and sporting sound central to a performance car and convincingly delivered by Infiniti’s famed 3.5-litre V6 engine with its distinctive exhaust bark and wide rev range.

VIP customer service, part of Infiniti’s Total Ownership Experience, ensures Infiniti Q50 drivers will not have to worry about driving long distances or facing the traffic to get their vehicles serviced. Depending on country, Infiniti Centres offer pick-up and delivery to home or office for scheduled maintenance (fees may apply).

Direct Response technology means the Q50 3.5h can combine its exceptional pace and sporting prowess with an extended zero emissions mode at low speeds, making it both the perfect open roads tourer and silent, electrically-powered, zero-tailpipe emissions city commuter. Impressively, the engineers have been able to package the hybrid control hardware and new-for-the-Q50 lithiumion battery pack in an innovative new way in the rear of the car, allowing for a generous 400 litres boot capacity. Infiniti’s first four-cylinder diesel engine The Infiniti Q50 is the first Infiniti to benefit from the brand’s collaboration agreement with Daimler AG. The 2.2-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine has been modified by the Infiniti engineering teams to ensure engine response is in line with Infiniti’s emphasis on performance.

Unique Infiniti engine parts include air inlet, intercooler, low-pressure fuel system and after treatment system, oil pan, engine mounts, and engine control unit (ECU). Visible engine items are in addition unique to Infiniti. The block, turbocharger, exhaust and injection system are common with the Mercedes-Benz version. The engine offers highly competitive power and torque whilst retaining a low CO2 output that positions the Q50 at the centre of the business user-chooser market in Europe – as well as guaranteeing the dynamic drive Infiniti owners expect. Like the engine, both available transmissions – a 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic – have been tailored to Infiniti’s specific requirements.

The car with app appeal Offering all that people like best about smartphones and tablet computers, the Infiniti Q50 takes staying in touch while on the move to a new level of convenience. Whether emailing, phoning, browsing or Tweeting, the new-generation system offers a wide range of apps and delivers seamless connectivity with a user interface that any tablet owner will find second nature to master. Called Infiniti InTouch™ the core system (excluding navigation function but including dual touchscreens) is standard on every Q50. Infiniti InTouch™ is as intuitive to use as an iPad and as functional as the latest smartphone, seamlessly integrating on-board hardware with off-board services using the driver’s smartphone as the portal. Options for operating the system include not just the dual touch-screens but also enhanced voice recognition, a central console commander, and steering wheel switches. The apps are optimised to work inside a car with the emphasis on a clear and simple user interface, so they may display differently in the car and not all functions from the phone app may be available. To get started all a new Q50 owner has to do is download the free Infiniti InTouch™ companion app to synchronise Q50 with smartphone. Once paired, the owner can then select more apps. Infiniti has set up its own app store, App Garage, where Q50 owners can choose from a wide variety of applications, with more becoming available all the time.

THE SWEDISH SENSE

OF PERFORMANCE Koenigsegg Agera / Agera R

All pictures © 1994-2013 Koenigsegg

Agera means “to take action” in Swedish. It is also short for the ancient Greek word Ageratos which means “ageless”. These are both suitable meanings for a car that is building the future of Koenigsegg

(

KOENIGSEGG AGERA / AGERA R

(

The

Agera has handsome proportions, compact and muscular. The car is designed with a minimalistic “less is more philosophy in mind. This philosophy dictates that the shape of the car has to be purely functional, with no added features except those needed to meet regulations, or enhance safety, ergonomics, practicality or aerodynamics. We believe that if this philosophy is followed, the car will be as beautiful as it is purposeful. Koenigsegg develops and produces its engines in-house. These are between the lightest and most compact hypercar engines in the world, weighing only 197kg complete with flywheel, clutch, dry sump system, Inconel exhaust manifold and turbo. The Agera engine also has class-leading power and torque characteristics; its 5 litre V8 bi-turbo engine develops more than 960 hp on 95 octane regular fuel, offering over 1000 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm and 1100 Nm from 3500 to 6000 rpm, showing great flexibility. The Agera engine complies with the most stringent environmental regulations in the world, EU5 and LEV2, and delivers a significant power increase compared to previous Koenigsegg engines. The newly developed 7-speed gearbox for the Agera features a dual clutch system for a single input shaft gearbox. In order to keep the gearbox light, compact, strong and reliable, Koenigsegg chose to develop a new gearbox type in partnership with Cima, one that enables the use of a combination of both a dry and wet clutch systems in order to get excellent shift times.

The

small size and very low weight, considering the longitudinal 7 speed layout, made it possible to maintain the shortest-in-class rear overhang, thereby giving an excellent central mass position and maintaining neutral behaviour in extreme conditions. The Agera´s unique carbon fibre monocoque chassis is designed to achieve its maximum stiffness without a roof, as the roof is detachable and stow-able in the front of the car. The Koenigsegg carbon monocoque chassis has an astonishing level of stiffness, measures at 65.000 Nm/deg. It weighs just 70kg, including the integrated fuel tanks. The result of constant weight saving exercises is a car’s dry weight of only 1330kg. The suspension geometry of the Agera was designed to further enhance the award winning behaviour of the CCX. The Agera’s track is wider at the front, compensating for the narrower front tires and giving the car a square stance of 2 meters in both the front and the rear. Long Agera’s wishbones have several advantages, for example: less track width deviation during wheel movement or cornering and improved geometry over a longer wheel stroke. The Agera is equipped with the latest ABS technology, which is based on a lightweight, performance-oriented racing system. The system makes it possible for the ABS function to react differently, depending on the performance mode. Furthermore, the ABS braking system operates on massive 392×36mm and 380×34mm ventilated and drilled ceramic discs, for unparalleled braking performance and zero fade, regardless of track or road condition.

New thinking and innovation in the polymer field was rewarded at the Plastic Forum’s well attended Plastic Innovation Awards ceremony at the recent Elmia Subcontractor exhibition. The prize for category Composites went to Koenigsegg Automotive AB, Ängelholm for its revolutionary Aircore Hollow Carbon Wheel.

(

KOENIGSEGG AGERA / AGERA R

(

The

Interior of the Agera is truly minimalistic and efficient in the purest Swedish sense. There is nothing in the interior merely to add visual drama; everything is there for a functional purpose. The only materials you get to touch and see inside the Agera are aluminium, carbon fibre, precious metals, alcantara and aniline leather. All switchgear is original and features wonderfully unique solutions. The exceptionally comfortable carbon seats are great for long journeys but also give excellent lateral support when needed. The 2013 Agera R has all the features and functionalities of previous year models, but also features new and unique solutions to enhance performance and visual appearance even further. Koenigsegg was the first Hypercar manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The Agera R, based on the highly competitive Agera, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on E85 biofuel. Among many differences to the standard Agera, the Agera R has an upgraded fuel and engine management system with enough flow capacity to generate 1140 hp and 1200 nm of torque on E85 and E100 biofuel. As there is less energy content per given volume in these biofuels compared to normal petrol, the fuelsystem has to manage a flow that is similar to a 2000hp petrol engine, which means that the Agera R’s return-less fuel system has the highest capacity of any car presently in production. As the Agera R is a flexfuel car, it can also be run on normal petrol. As 95 octane fuel has less octane than ethanol E85, the power is reduced to 960hp with 1100Nm of torque due to the boost pressure and ignition timing being altered to match the fuel characteristics.

SUPER GT is a top-class motor racing series in Japan with a huge international fan base. It is run by a mix of two classes with heavily modified production cars. This popular motor racing series marks the 20th year, established in 1994 as the All-Japan GT Championship and was renamed as SUPER GT in 2005. SUPER GT is divided into two classes according to engine’s horsepower: GT500 (Class 1) and GT300 (Class 2, formed by FIA GT3 cars and JAF-GT300 cars). In addition to the differences in engine power through adjusting the amount of airflow into each engine, the extent of regulations on modification result in different speed.

FIA Formula 3 European Championship

A GREAT MEDIA PRESENCE !

Right from the start, the feeder series FIA Formula 3 European Championship succeeded in impressing with an extensive and global media presence, comprising - in addition to the international TV presence - first of all the appearances at the most different social-media channels.

With

nearly four hours of track time per race meeting, the 2013 season of the young-talent series provided motor racing at its best on every single race weekend, featuring thrilling battles and countless overtaking manoeuvres. Big crowds attended the events, with the total attendance figure in the 2013 season adding up to 589,000 visitors. The season highlight at Nuremberg’s unique street circuit, the Norisring, alone was attended by 126,000 motor-racing enthusiasts. An international top-class field and twelve teams from five countries thrilled not only the spectators on site. At the same time, the TV commentators also displayed massive interest in the series. The coverage of the ten FIA Formula 3 European Championship meetings amounted to a total of 1,850 hours, representing an average coverage time of 185 hours per race weekend. In more than 199 countries and regions, 145 TV stations brought 4,334 programmes featuring action packed race pictures and background information. The digital TV station Motors TV that is available in many countries covered all the 30 races live. In addition to the series’ German TV partner, n-tv, numerous other renowned TV stations, such as ESPN, Rai Sport, Sky Sports and Speed2 regularly covered the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. In Europe alone, 41 million spectators were provided with a total of 1,156 programmes on 32 TV stations, adding up to 867 hours packed with the spectacular race pictures of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. International superstars to race in F. Abarth! Formula 1

driver Jules Bianchi and Indycar superstar lady Simona de Silvestro are going to participate as “guest stars” in one of the F. Abarth Florida Winter Series event organized by the Ferrari Driver Academy. The series, built to offer to young drivers the opportunity to stay in activity during the winter pause of the main championships, is made up of 4 rounds (plus one collective test) and will be held on some of Florida’s tracks in the upcoming months of January and February. Many other drivers from the Maranello Academy have confirmed their will to race at the events. Among these are Lance Stroll, Antonio Fuoco and Raffaele Marciello. Also planning to tackle the new and original way of preparing for the coming season are a handful of talented youngsters such as the winner of the F3 Open Series, the Spaniard Ed Jones, and drivers from the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, Dennis Van de Laar, Nicola Latifi and Louis Sa Silva. Also racing will be Alex Bozak, who raced against Fuoco in Formula Renault 2.0 Alps and Leonardo Pulcini from the world of karts.

All drivers will run a Formula Abarth car and will be assisted by FDA personnel in order to improve their professionalism under every point of view. It could be anyway curious and interesting to see such important drivers as De Silvestro and Bianchi coming back to a little and “preparatory” car as the Formula Abarth. CGM

( Aston Martin on canvas

As

luxury British sports car maker Aston Martin’s centenary year draws towards its close the company unveiled a collection of unique artworks created to celebrate and document its 100 years in business by Aston Martin’s centenary artist-in-residence, James Hart Dyke. James was given exclusive, behind-thescenes, access throughout the year and the resulting paintings are based on visits to the state-of-the-art Aston Martin factory and global headquarters at Gaydon in Warwickshire,

the Le Mans and Nürburgring 24-Hour races and many other centenary events. The works, consisting mainly of oil on canvas, document among other things the drive of the 1959 Le Mans-winning DBR1 by racing legend Sir Stirling Moss at the year’s N24, the debut of the centenary-inspired concept car – the CC100 – and the central London celebration of 100 years of Aston Martin that saw more than £1 billion-worth of rare and exotic Aston Martins displayed at Kensington Gardens in July.

Between some interesting works Arad presents “Roddy Giacosa” (2013), a new sculpture created by positioning hundreds of polished stainless steel rods on a metal armature in the shape of a Fiat 500. Each contoured section takes the shape of one of the vehicle’s panels and the parts fit together to form the body of the car.

LaFerrari the best of masterpieces ‘In Reverse’ exhibition

When

art meets the world of the automobile, Ferrari always plays a leading role. That was confirmed at a show being staged over December in Miami, at the annual Art Basel Miami exhibition, one of the most important events on the international cultural and artistic calendar. On the top floor of 1111 Lincoln Road, the studio of Herzog & de Meuron architects has been transformed into an open car park featuring cars turned into sculptures by great modern and contemporary artists from around the world, including Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, Cesar and Kenny Scharf. The show, called “Piston Head: Artists Engage the Automo-

bile” not only has the patronage of Ferrari, but among the masterpieces is one that encapsulates the quintessential characteristics that make the Maranello marque unique in the world – technical innovation, performance, futuristic style, the thrill of driving that comes from its creations - which to say it all in a single word, is LaFerrari. The show included works from the following artists, Ron Arad, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Cesar, Dan Colen and Nate Lowman, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Virginia Overton, Olivier Mosset/Jacob Kassay/Servane Mary, Richard Phillips, Richard Prince, Tom Sachs, Salvatore Scarpitta, Kenny Scharf, Franz West.

Not even ying is better!

A

utonomous driving is destined to become reality in the not-too-distant future. While the major automakers are putting the finishing touches on the vehicle technology, the Swiss idea factory Rinspeed puts the occupants at the center of the driverless car. Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht says: “So far hardly anyone has taken this to its logical conclusion from the perspective

of the driver. After all, traveling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way”. One of the keys questions is: how does the interior of a vehicle has to be designed to let the now largely unburdened driver make optimal use of the time gained? The Swiss company provides the answer with a fully electric touring sedan by the name of “XchangE.” So far only a few highlights have been revealed. The vehicle features all-new seats reminiscent of the relaxing business-class seats of major airlines – with similarly elaborate functionality. And it uses a completely new operating and display concept with a host of innovative entertainment, safety and service functions. This makes it possible to work or relax in particular comfort while riding in the driverless car. All passengers can enjoy a wide variety of media or access in-depth information. And to make sure the steering wheel is not a hindrance while doing so, it can simply be “parked” in the middle of the dashboard, courtesy of state-of-the-art “steer-bywire” technology that can also be found on modern jet aircraft. It is therefore no surprise that the smart automotive visionary with a wink negates the advertising slogan that has become part of the vernacular: “Not even flying is better!”

You can read, listen to music, surf the web, play games, watch movies in brilliant picture and sound quality or hold a meeting at 120 km/h and work on your files. The creators are certain that autonomous driving will actually make individual travel even more attractive compared to traveling by train, plane or longdistance coach. As Rinderknecht puts it: “I am given free time that I can use for myself anyway I please, while the sensor systems and the computer chauffeur me safely and reliably to my destination”.
