ALFA ROMEO

4C SPIDER DESIGN PREVIEW The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Design Preview made its world début at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, previewing a new model scheduled to go into production in early 2015. In this new open-top Alfa the additional weight of the transformation has been limited just to approximately 60kg. Powered by Alfa Romeo’s new four-

cylinder, all-aluminium, 1750 Turbo Petrol engine, which drives the rear wheels via a sixspeed, dual dry-clutch Alfa TCT transmission, the 4C Spider’s performance is all but identical to that of the hardtop Alfa Romeo 4C: 0 to 62mph takes just 4.5 seconds and top speed is in excess of 155mph.

ASTON MARTIN

V8 VANTAGE N430 DB9 CARBON BLACK & CARBON WHITE EDITIONS

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage N430 – available in Coupe or Roadster form – boasts a power hike to 436 PS at 7,300 rpm that brings its output up to that of the spirited V8 Vantage S. No surprise, then, that the new V8 Vantage N430 is capable of 190 mph, with a 0-60 mph time that drops to 4.6 seconds.

The Aston Martin DB9 Carbon Black & Carbon White editions feature striking exterior additions, including carbon fibre side strakes and black window surrounds reinforcing the powerful visual themes. Inside, a strong black styling theme with carbon fibre details.

AUDI

TT S3 CABRIOLET

The front end of the new Audi TT has dominant horizontals. The Singleframe grille is broad and flat. Two contours form a V-pattern over the engine hood. The position of the four rings is also new: they now sit centrally on the hood, echoing the R8. Many other details of the new Coupé’s profile are reminiscent of the first generation’s classic design. The first ever convertible Audi ‘S’ model will feature a soft

top with an electrohydraulic drive. The top is available in three colours. It opens or closes in 18 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 31 mph. The Audi S3 Cabriolet is powered by a 2.0 TFSI which delivers 300 PS between 5,500 rpm and 6,200 rpm and produces 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) of torque from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm. With S tronic the open-top four-seater accelerates to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds.

FERRARI CALIFORNIA T

The Ferrari California T epitomises elegance, sportiness, versatility and exclusivity: characteristics that have distinguished every California model since the 1950s. The California T boasts striking standards of innovation while retaining signature features such as the successful 2+ concept, a refined cabin and, of course, the

retractable hard top. The model brims with a host of new solutions, not least of which is its 8-cylinder turbo engine. Maranello’s engineers have created an entirely new power unit which delivers absolutely superb levels of performance, blistering pick-up and the most exhilarating soundtrack any turbo has ever yielded. This is also the first time vir-

tually zero turbo lag has been achieved on an engine of this type, guaranteeing instantaneous response to commands and, as with naturally-aspirated power units, a torque curve that increases constantly across the rev range thanks to Variable Boost Management. The direct-injection, 3855 cc turbo 8-cylinder is mounted very

low in the chassis in a mid-front position and delivers 560 cv at 7500 rpm, which translates into a specific power output of 145 cv/l - the highest in its category - as along with maximum torque of 755 Nm. Figures that give the California T extraordinary acceleration over the 0 to 100 km/h sprint which it covers in just 3.6 seconds.

be available with a choice of two latest-generation petrol engines: the e-VTi 68 Airdream engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox and featuring Stop&Start technology and the new VTi 82 from the PureTech engine family. In the C4 CACTUS, Citroën has adopted an original approach: adopt technological innovations reflecting decisive choices in design, comfort, convenience and running costs. By combining an optimised platform with efficient latest-generation engines, Citroen has been able to reduce the weight of its new vehicle by 200 kg compared with a Citroen C4. Result: driveability and low fuel consumption (just 82g of CO2/ km or 3.1l/100 km for the diesel version and less than 100g of CO2/ km for the petrol version). Every detail of the Panda Cross 4x4 has been designed to make it immediately recognisable and distinctive, with a stylistic language typical of an SUV. The Fiat Panda Cross is available with two engine options, both with Start&Stop: the new 90 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo and the 80 HP 1.3 MultiJet II diesel. The Cross version of the Freemont is offered with the 140 HP 2.0 MultiJet II engine, with manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, and the 170 HP 2.0 MultiJet II, both in a 4×2 version with manual gearbox and an active AWD version teamed exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

MASERATI ALFIERI

( Maserati unveiled the Alfieri, a 2+2 concept car to celebrate the brand’s centenary. The striking new concept bears the name of Alfieri, the most prominent of the Maserati brothers and the engineering genius who founded “Officine Alfieri Maserati” in Bologna a century ago. One of the most fascinating cars of all time, the Maserati A6 GCS-53 designed by Pininfarina in 1954, proved a valuable source of in-

spiration for the designers. The Alfieri is obviously much more than a futuristic interpretation of the A6 GCS-53. While the inverted A pillars of the A6 GCS-53 were not adopted in the new Alfieri, their optical effect has been recreated by a sculptured line that starts from the bonnet and fades to the upper part of the doors, making the windscreen look larger. The wheels have been specially designed for the Alfieri concept. Forged from

single aluminium elements, the 21” diameter rear and 20” front wheels feature integrated decorative spokes that are reminiscent of the classic spoke wheels of the 1950s. In the 2+2 seat cabin, the design team have created a study in simplicity and minimalism. Under the sleek body lies the transaxle platform of the Maserati GranTurismo. This 4.7 litre, naturally aspirated, V8 engine from Maranello develops 460bhp at 7,000rpm and 520Nm at 4,750rpm and gives the Alfieri a real driving force. A six-speed, electro-actuated gearbox (MC Shift) is mounted in a single unit with the limited slip rear differential and connected to the engine via a rigid torque tube.

the V8 Twin Turbo 3.8 liter 650hp engine, mated to a 7-speed SSG transmission. Enhanced levels of optional specification are offered for both the interior and exterior. Pricing for the McLaren 650S Coupe starts at ÂŁ195,250, with the 650S Spider starting at ÂŁ215,250.

MERCEDES-BENZ

S-CLASS COUPÉ

Main highlight of the new Mercedes Class S Coupe is the Magic Body Control, the first “suspension with eyes”. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced and passengers sit more firmly. Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function shifts the base point of each in-

dividual strut. This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second and to angles of up to 2.5 degrees. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen and an additional transversal acceleration sensor.

VOLVO

CONCEPT ESTATE

( Volvo presented the third in a series of concept cars – the Concept Estate – that for the first time reveals how the interior of Volvo’s forthcoming models will both look and function. The traditional selection of buttons and controls have been replaced by one large tablet-like touch screen control panel in the centre console. The rear of Concept Estate echoes the design of the Volvo 1800 ES from the early 1970s. The subtle inspiration from the 1800-models is also evident on several details inside the Concept Estate, such as the two-spoke steering wheel, the instrument panel and the dials.

VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC CONCEPT

The T-ROC offers a glimpse at future Volkswagen SUVs: it is smaller than the Tiguan, but larger than the Taigun SUV concept, which is in the development phase. Power for the T-ROC is provided by a high-torque (380 Nm from 1,750 rpm) and fuel-efficient 184 PS turbodiesel engine connected via a newly developed seven-speed DSG gearbox to a 4MOTION all-wheeldrive system. Top speed is 130 mph in this concept car, with zero to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds. The T-ROC is predicted to have a combined fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km (57.6 mpg), equating to 129 g/km of carbon dioxide. CGM

E

agle E-Types are world renowned for providing the ultimate Jaguar E-Types. They range from exceptional un-restored originals to ‘better than new’ restorations and an extensive catalogue of upgrades is exclusively offered to buyers of E-Types from Eagle. Showcasing the technical improvements has been Eagle’s Speedster, a re-interpretation of the car that Enzo Ferrari described as “the most beautiful car in the world”. The Speedster has been a huge success but as a dedicated open sports car without a roof the Speedster lacks touring practicality… so Eagle has now addressed the issue with their latest creation: the Low Drag GT. It is a purposeful high performance continental touring E-Type with styling taking the best from the three original ‘Low Drag Coupes’ that were built in the 1960’s. The high power to weight ratio is provided by the all aluminium lightweight body, combined with Eagle’s all aluminium high torque 4.7 litre engine, fuel injection, and 5 speed transmission. It weighs just 1038kg and, essentially invisible however, all the practical solutions missing from the original race-cars have been discretely included and the finish and execution throughout is high quality and precise. The cockpit is far more spacious than the originals and is luxuriously trimmed, insulated and, of course, air-conditioned. The flush mounted heated glass front and rear is an indication of the bespoke attention to detail that extends throughout. Further practicalities include a large trunk and a long-range fuel cell. Production will be limited to just a few vehicles and each will be a bespoke commission. The price starts at £695,000 and is dependent on final specification.

EAGLE LOW DRAG GT

(

Original Jaguar Low Drag Coupe Jaguar officially withdrew from racing in 1956, but the competition department remained active creating a car, which would become the E-Type, for the proposed FIA Production Sports Car Manufacturers Championship. Designer, Malcolm Sayer, drew a special streamlined version of the E-Type in 1960 using mathematical aerodynamic formulae while engineers worked at weight saving and increasing performance. They called it the GT Prototype Coupe. It later became known as the ‘Low Drag’ Coupe. By 1962 the FIA had not sanctioned the proposed Production Sports Car Manufacturers Championship so the GT project stalled. Demand for production sports cars to be raced by private owners remained however high and, as Jaguar was supporting the Coombs and Equipe Endeavour teams, they did manufacture twelve ‘lightweight’ roadsters in aluminium with special mechanical specification including aluminium engine blocks. In 1963, privateer E-Type racer, Dick Protheroe, requested one of the aluminium lightweights to replace his existing regular steel E-Type. With the car not available Jaguar offered him the GT Prototype Coupe upgraded to the current technical specification. One other lightweight, No.6 owned by Peter Lumsden, was converted privately but in a time when the E-Type was being outclassed and with the new Ferrari 250LM and the Ford GT40 it was all a bit too late to realise the full potential of the Low Drag Coupe.

Eagle History Eagle was established in 1982, Henry Pearman is the owner and managing director. He is a lifelong classic car enthusiast and has life-long love of the E-Type. The company has dedicated itself to the bespoke ‘remanufacture level’ restoration and engineering of the Jaguar E-Type and is proud to be considered the worldwide leader in Jaguar E-Type restoration. The company’s main objective is to provide customers the unrivalled joy of owning a beautiful, classic Jaguar E-Type with complete confidence in the reliability and performance. It had long been Henry’s dream for Eagle to build a usable dedicated road version of the beautiful Low Drag Coupe with space, comfort and high performance. The project started over a decade ago but, as an Eagle job, took low priority. Interest several years ago from an existing customer however enabled them to prioritize the project and complete it. Paul Brace and Mathew Dewhurst joined Henry in 1988 and the three remain the core of Eagle today. The team is about 14 strong and virtually everything is done in-house at the rural East Sussex premises. Paul Brace is the Technical Director and creative responsible for the design and development of the Eagle upgrades, the design, development and production of the Speedster and the development and production of the Low Drag GT.

World Premiere of All-New Subaru “Legacy” at 2014 Chicago Auto Show

DESIGN AND ENGINEERING FUSION

The new Legacy means design, ride quality, environmental friendliness and safety performance. The Legacy’s polish gives it universal appeal as a true sports sedan providing trust-inspiring driving excitement, an inspiration to drivers to dream bigger and imagine a fuller lifestyle.

(

NEW SUBARU “LEGACY”

S

(

ince its inception, the Legacy has continued to consistently offer drivers sportiness with value. This makes the Legacy enjoyably less stressful to drive in all situations and gives drivers the exhilarating ability to direct the car exactly where they want. The product concept for development of the new Legacy was “The Fusion of Design and Engineering at a High Level”. Subaru aimed for the high-level fusion of all the elements of sporty driving excitement. In addition to sharpening the basic performance essential to a Subaru sedan—ride quality, safety, packaging and more—all these elements were incorporated into the design.

Design “Muscularity with Agility” was adopted as the design theme to create sportier and more refined styling for the Subaru flagship sedan. Maintaining the design for the spacious, comfortable cabin space the Legacy is known for, the styling focuses on a sculptured body evoking a sense of safety and a strong base which grips the road with AWD. A body-integrated hexagonal grille and hawk-eye headlights are the new face of Subaru. Also, the dynamic character lines on the body side and tight, expressive body surface further raise the class for an already classy sport sedan.

The side airbags have added an all-new twochamber system, with the chest and waist sections split for safety. The protection area for the curtain airbags has been expanded to enhance the performance for preventing passengers from being ejected from the vehicle during a rollover.

(

NEW SUBARU “LEGACY”

(

The head unit has a navigation system and audio with intuitive touch operation. A wide, flat center display is employed to allow passengers to enjoy various media and provide them with various information. Also, consolidating information onto one screen makes it easier to see and use.

The front end employs a nose cone design. Due to the three dimensional shape beginning with the front grille, more dynamic design has been achieved. The rear combination lamps have the same design motif as the front in pursuit of a fearless image, front to back. Also, LED lamps are employed for the tail and brake lamps to help enhance fuel economy, and optimal light distribution has improved night visibility. “Comfortable and Sporty” was adopted as the design theme to improve the interior quality and comfort, while creating a next-generation interior offering a sportier driver’s area and an infotainment system for a more enjoyable in-car experience. The cabin is configured for a comfortable long driving, striking a balance between openness and secure feeling with adequate forward space. Also, the wide dashboard has horizontal highlights to give an even wider feel. For the interior colors, there are a sporty black and an ornate ivory configuration, meant to provide appeal with a cabin combining driving excitement with comfort and quality.

The package The cabin has been made more comfortable with more breathing room. Visibility, cabin space and safety have been kept in a highly efficient package with strong, sporty styling and a bright, spacious feel. While increases to basic specs were kept in minimum and maintaining the same external dimensional feel, certain aspects were refined, such as thinner frame of door sashes and a revised body frame of its roof to achieve ample roominess. Shoulder, elbow, waist and rear leg room in particular have been increased for a more comfortable cabin and further increased safety. The A pillar has been moved forward to expand the cabin area. In addition, front quarter windows were added with door-mounted side mirrors to reduce the front blind spot created by the side mirrors for increased forward visibility. Space between the driver and front passenger seat has been widened to enlarge both the center armrest and console box. Also, space when seated was expanded, and the door sash frame and sun visors were thinned. The space for the rear seats has been made more comfortable by expanding the tandem distance, changing the front seat slide rail construction to expand rear seat legroom.

The Blind Spot Detection (BSD) flashes LEDs to alert the driver to vehicles in the blind spots behind the C- and D-pillars to the rear. If the driver operates an indicator to change lanes while a vehicle exists in a blind spot, LEDs in the door mirror flash to warn the driver.

(

NEW SUBARU “LEGACY

(

980 MPa-class high-tensile steel is used effectively in more areas where body strength is required to reduce weight while achieving world-class safety with respect to impacts from the front, side, and rear directions.

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) emits an audible warning sound if it detects the danger of a collision due to a vehicle approaching from the left or right while reversing. If a vehicle approaches from the left or right while the driver has selected reverse gear and is reversing, the driver is alerted by LEDs flashing in the door mirror, an icon displayed in the rear-view camera monitor, and an audible warning sound from the speedometer.

(

NEW SUBARU “LEGACY

(

The mechanism The chassis, steering, suspension and brakes were totally revamped for performance a head above its class. This pursuit of performance offers even more balance between steering stability and ride quality, achieving a higher quality ride. Increased rigidity of the body and suspension mounting positions suppresses roll to achieve higher ride quality without sacrificing suspension smoothness. The pursuit of performance through reduced suspension operating friction plus improved efficiency due to a basic layout that enhances stabilizer efficiency, combined with optimization of the front struts and rear shock absorbers, takes steering stability and ride quality to a whole new level. STABLEX-Ride has been employed for premium grade models. New valves and larger diameter front strut cylinders have improved damping response at low piston speeds and permit damping suppression at high piston speeds, resulting in even more stable steering stability and comfortable ride quality. To improve the dynamic rigidity of the rear suspension and its mounting positions on the chassis, the shape of the rear support subframe has been completely renewed and redesigned to function as a member that enhances body rigidity. The steering system employs a small, lightweight, high-powered control unit builtin the electric power steering. This, along with increased motor output and finer motor controls, achieves an accurate and natural steering feel. With the brakes Subaru worked to produce predictable brake feel which balances re-

sponsiveness, control and rigidity. Building the electronic parking brake (EPB) into the rear caliper makes the system quieter and more responsive. For the wheels, the bearing size has been enlarged as all models have a PCD of 114.3 millimeters. Finally note that the aerodynamic designs also help to improve fuel economy. The engine 2.5-liter, DOHC, Horizontally-Opposed, 4-cylinder Mid-range torque was raised on the FB25 Boxer engine, meaning more control and a lighter feel in practical driving ranges. Also, significant changes revolving around the intake, exhaust and combustion systems have improved fuel economy. While keeping the same basic structure from the previous intake manifold and tumbler generation valve (TGV), TGV valve position and intake port shape were given a simpler orientation. These changes balance volumetric efficiency in higher engine speed ranges with efficient combustion in lower engine speed ranges, improving both power and fuel economy. 3.6-liter, DOHC, Horizontally-Opposed, 6-cylinder Subaru continues its many years in honing performance from its EZ Boxer engine, working to improve fuel economy by employing the high-torque-compatible Lineartronic. The ECU is employed with a lighter nextgeneration microcontroller, which allows for further environmental measures.

Transmission Power and environmental friendliness have been enhanced from the previous Lineartronic model for increased fuel economy. This also provides driveability with the smooth shifting the Lineartronic is known for and a light ride that always stays true to driver intentions. Friction within the transmission has been reduced for improved fuel efficiency and a vibration noise reducer has been added to enhance ride quietness. New step shift control retains the shift-shockfree smooth acceleration that is characteristic of Lineartronic transmissions, while

increasing vehicle and engine speed and providing a nimble ride that responds directly to driver intentions. With the standard paddle shifting in the sixspeed manual mode, the driver can select the optimal gear quickly without taking their hands from the wheel, even under sudden deceleration or heavy acceleration. By adopting the high-torque-compatible Lineartronic for 3.6-liter Boxer engine, both driveability and environmental friendliness have been achieved at a high level. Compared to the previous high-torque-compatible Lineartronic, torque converter, oil pump and forward-reverse mechanism were

(

( newly designed while employing a new shifting controller for enhanced driveability and ride quietness. New step shift control retains the shift-shockfree smooth acceleration that is characteristic of Lineartronic transmissions, while increasing vehicle and engine speed and providing a nimble ride that responds directly to driver intentions. Safety Building on a strong body frame base, both the traditional active and passive safety performance have been further advanced for improved omnidirectional safety performance. In addition to the New EyeSight, Rear and side visibility support features comprising Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) as well as Steering Responsive Fog (SRF) lamps that move to maintain good visibility to the front as the vehicle rounds a bend have been added to improve preventative safety and driving load-reduction.

Rolls-Royce phantom drophead coupé BESPOKE waterspeed collection

ENCHANTING BLUE Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is revealing an exclusive sketch of the Bespoke Waterspeed Collection, a series of 35 Phantom Drophead Coupés that seeks to celebrate a seminal act of British daring and endeavour.

On the morning of 1 September 1937, at the height of the battle between the United States and Great Britain to be the fastest nation on water, Sir Malcolm Campbell headed out onto the calm blue waters of Lake Maggiore on the Swiss-Italian frontier.

O

n taking the wheel of his Bluebird K3 hydroplane boat, powered by RollsRoyce’s R-Type engine, he established his legend, setting a record of 126.32 mph. The following day he went one better, piloting his craft to 129.5 mph, in doing so emphatically breaking the United States’ five-year stranglehold on the world waterspeed record. Campbell’s momentous achievement captured the world’s attention and reaffirmed the Rolls-Royce R-Type engines’ record-breaking superiority after triumphs on land and in the air. Echoing the cutting-edge technology employed in the construction of these craft, only the finest contemporary materials never used before on a Rolls-Royce furnish the Waterspeed Collection. Brushed steel perfectly complements an exclusively developed Maggiore Blue colour scheme whilst hand-crafted wood inlays evoke the sense of a boat effortlessly gliding through water at pace. “Sir Malcolm Campbell’s successful pursuit of world-speed records on land and water were the result of his commitment to the most exacting standards of British design and engineering excellence - said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars - such attributes are hallmarks of every Rolls-Royce motor car, ensuring the marque’s position at the pinnacle of super-luxury manufacturing. This special Collection, and those to follow in 2014, serve to display the breadth of Bespoke personalisation available to every Rolls-Royce customer. I very much look forward to revealing these remarkable cars over the coming months.” Following the release of this design sketch that gives a candid insight into the conception of Rolls-Royce’s latest Bespoke project, further details will be revealed over the coming months telling the story of the creation of the Waterspeed Collection.

“I am delighted that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has chosen our grandfather’s iconic Bluebird Waterspeed boats as inspiration for this special Collection - said Donald Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell I am certain Sir Malcolm would be extremely flattered to see his name still closely associated with such a prestigious brand 75 years after his last world Waterspeed Record. I know that I speak for our whole family and the Malcolm Campbell Heritage Trust when I say that it is a great honour and we look forward to seeing the first car off the production line.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently revealed that its Bespoke business has become more successful than ever with content on its range of super-luxury cars reaching new heights in 2013. Almost 95% of Rolls-Royce cars purchased last year were personalised by their owners, reinforcing the claim that Rolls-Royce is the go-to luxury carmaker for the connoisseur who demands the best in individualisation.

he Traction Avant, an emblematic pre-war model (launched in 1934), illustrated all the visionary genius of Andrテゥ CITROテ起 at a time when almost all cars were rear-wheel driven. With its lower gravity, all-steel monocoque body, light weight and honed aerodynamics, the Traction Avant delivered breakthrough road performance in terms of handling and roadholding, winning the hearts of a broad public, especially with the family versions with up to eight seats. The launch of the first Traction Avant, the 7 CV, 80 years ago in April 1934, revolutionised the automobile. Never before had a massproduction car featured so many innovative solutions. Styled by design genius Flaminio Bertoni, the avant-garde, low-slung body of the Traction Avant lent it a singular appeal among the vehicles of the day. The new model met with instant success, owing largely to its breakthrough road performance. The favourite car of the police and gangsters alike, it is often associated in the collective memory with the period of the Occupation. The last Traction Avant came off the production line at the Javel plant on 25 July 1957. produced in 759,123 units, it was manufactured for over 23 years, a longevity record at the time. Still a legend, the Traction Avant paved the way for the modern automobile.

The Polar Vortex may have brought freezing temperatures across the country, but the action was burning up as Red Bull Frozen Rush brought eight off-road trucks to the slopes in the first ever headto-head race on snow. A few hours from Boston, skiers and snowboarders shared during January the contours of Sunday River’s South Ridge with 4x4 trucks blazing the trails and dodging slalom gates. The race format was a bracketed, single elimination with two drivers on course at a time. Regularly a sport reserved for the sand, dirt, mud and sunny con-

ditions, about ten thousand winter weather worshippers and racing fanatics braved the single digit temperatures to witness motorsports getting an edge on Mother Nature. Eight of the country’s best professional off-road truck drivers traveled far and wide to conquer unprecedented terrain including snow and ice and tackle berms, jumps, and slalom-style racing. The high-octane racing proved to be intense from start to finish, with the final race pitting long-standing rivals Ricky Johnson against Johnny Greaves.

With an extended four lap final (all other rounds were two laps), the two pushed their Pro4 trucks to the limit, with Greaves edging out Johnson by .24 seconds. Unfortunately for Greaves, he was docked 5 seconds for hitting a race gate, cementing both the victory for Johnson and the ongoing rivalry. The Red Bull Frozen Rush concept was initially explored by Ricky Johnson in February 2013 as a proof of concept, when he tested the capability of his Pro4 truck on the rough and tough conditions of a New England winter. Due to the success and the potential to take

Pro4 off-road truck racing to the next level, the event expanded to include multiple pro drivers competing on a two-lap snow covered course that would make any adrenaline seeker proud. The race format was head-to-head, bracketed, single elimination with two drivers on course at a time. “It was great to bring motorheads to the mountain - said Johnson after barely beating his fellow Pro4 racer Johnny Greaves - what a thrill to cover new ground, literally, with guys that I respect and have been racing with for years.

Trucks tearing up the slopes for the first time came with its own set of technical challenges, such as maintaining speed while keeping traction on slippery and icy surfaces. Each truck was specifically modified in order to adapt to the harsh weather conditions and one-of-a-kind, studded and specially designed Mud-Terrain tires from BFGoodrich’s Research and Development team that armed all the veteran motorsports racers as they ripped up and down the nearly mile long course. While the tires provided maximum traction, they also created a dense cloud from the snow roost, obscuring the drivers’ vision.

The handy guide to the biggest Formula 1 regulation changes

FORMULA 2014

From the introduction of complex new turbocharged, hybrid Power Units, to revised front and rear wing geometries, altered nose heights and new laws governing exhausts, this year’s cars will be radically different. But it’s not only the technical laws that have changed: the 2014 season will see F.1 undergo the most comprehensive set of regulation changes as the sport has ever seen

FORMULA UNO

SPORTING CHANGES Penalty Points Starting this season, drivers may accumulate penalty points on their Super License as a result of race incidents and rule infringements, should the Race Stewards deem it necessary. As with the road licenses of some countries if a driver accrues 12 penalty points, his license will be suspended for the following event, following which the 12 points will be removed from the license. Penalty points will remain on a driver’s Super License for a period of 12 months. Double Points at Final Race of the Season This season will see double points awarded at the final race of the season in a bid to maintain interest in the championship should there be significant gaps in the Championship order in the closing stages of the season. It means that victory in Abu Dhabi this season will be worth 50 points, second place will be worth 36 points and so on.

Pole Position Trophy A trophy will be awarded to the driver who sets the most pole positions during the season. In the event of a tie, the holder of the greatest number of second places in qualifying will be taken into account and so on down the order of a driver’s results until a winner is established. Extra Friday Drivers Teams will this year be allowed to run more than one driver per car during Friday practice sessions. In the past the driver nominated for the session would have to drive the whole session, but under the new regulation one or two of Test and Reserve drivers could undertake part of first or second session before handing the car over to one of the race drivers. To facilitate this and in a bid to increase running in the opening part of sessions, an extra set of the weekend’s harder (Prime) compound tires is being made

2014 FIA FORMULA 1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR available to teams, but only for use in the first 30 minutes of each session. Each side of the garage will now have access to seven sets of Primes and five sets of Option tires for the weekend, with three sets of each being reserved for qualifying and the race.

Cars Leaving the Track and Gaining an Advantage The subject of some discussion during last season, the rule covering the drivers leaving the track and gaining a perceived advantage has been tweaked so that a punishment of ceding back any advantage gained is now at the discretion of Race Director Charlie Whiting. This is aimed at avoiding the frequent imposition of drive-through penalties for infractions, penalties that could severely compromise a driver’s race. Drive-throughs are still available to the Race Stewards should the incident demand it, however.

Driver Numbers F.1 drivers are now allowed to choose their own race number, which will remain with them for the duration of the their F.1 career. Number one is still reserved for the Champion, however, should he wish to use it. Vettel has already opted to keep his #1 status while his team-mate Ricciardo has opted for #3. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen will be #7, Fernando Alonso has chosen #14 and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is #44, the number he used in his karting days. McLaren’s Jenson Button has chosen #22, the number of the Brawn GP car which took him to his 2009 world title. In-Season Testing After an experimental return to in-season testing in 2012 with one test at Mugello, during 2014 there will be four two-day in-season tests allowed, with Bahrain in April, Barcelona in May, Silverstone in July and Abu Dhabi’s in November. One of the eight test

days available must be allocated to Pirelli for tire testing. Pit stop Car Release The FIA has tightened the rules governing car release from pit stops following a number of incidents in recent seasons. If a car is deemed to have been released in an unsafe condition during any practice session, the stewards may drop the driver any number of grid positions they consider appropriate. Meanwhile, in the case of an unsafe release during a race, the driver concerned will receive a 10grid place penalty at the following race. However, if any car released in an unsafe condition is able to resume the race, a 10-second stopgo penalty will also be imposed for the current race. If the infringement is within the final three laps of the race, the driver will have 30 seconds added to his race time. Weighing A reprimand will be imposed on any

driver who fails to stop when signaled to do so, provided the car is then brought back to the FIA garage without delay and that the FIA technical delegate is satisfied the car has been brought back in exactly the same condition it was in when it was driven into the pits. This is a lesser punishment that has been issued in previous years. Any driver who fails to stop when asked to do so – and then fails to bring the car back to the FIA garage – will be required to start the race from the pit lane. Power Units Drivers will be able to use five of the new power units this season. This is more complicated than it first appears, as the power unit is deemed to comprise six elements, which can be moved between units should the need arise. Drivers will be able to use five each of the following: the engine (ICE), the motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), the motor generator

unit-eat (MGU-H), the energy store (ES), turbocharger (TC) and control electronics (CE). Each element can be rotated among units. Should a driver use more than five of any one of the elements, a grid penalty will be imposed at the first event during which each additional element is used. The first time a driver uses a sixth element, a ten-place grid penalty will be imposed. Different sixth elements used later will incur a five-place grid penalty. The first time a driver uses a seventh element, a ten-place grid penalty will be imposed. Different seventh elements used later will incur a five-place grid penalty and so on. Six-Race Gearboxes Since 2011, drivers have had to use gearboxes for five races, but this year the number has risen to six. As previously, drivers who don’t finish a race will be allowed to fit a new gearbox for the following race without penalty.

FORMULA UNO

Fuel Use No car is permitted to use more than 100kg of fuel, from the time of the race starts until the time it crosses the line at the end of the race. Other than in accepted cases of force majeure any driver exceeding the 100kg maximum will be excluded from the race result. More pills… • The Stewards may now impose a five second time penalty which can be taken before work is carried out on the car in a pit stop • Team personnel must also wear helmets during qualifying, as well as the race • Drivers may not stop on the slowing down lap to save fuel for sampling and subsequent analysis; this will not be considered justifiable reason for stopping • For 2014 only, each team will be allowed six curfew ‘jokers’, previously there were two permitted. This is to allow more flexibility for working on the new engines and cars.

FORMULA UNO

TECHNICAL CHANGES Front Wing The span of the front wing is narrowing from 1800 mm to 1650 mm. It’s a change that places the wing endplates more in line with the front tires, giving designers a decision to make regarding which way to direct airflow. Nose There’s a big change to the height of the nose tip, which drops from a maximum height of 550mm to a maximum of 185mm. The high nose has been useful for guiding airflow under the car, but it’s also viewed as a risk in “launching” accidents where one car impacts the rear of another and flies into the air. Chassis The front bulkhead also reduces in height down to 525mm – meaning the driver’s feet will be slightly lower than they are today – but the area around the cockpit retains a height of 625mm.

Impact protection The crash tubes inside the chassis are changing for 2014. They’ll be longer and of triangular section. Because they’re a standard design for all the teams, it slightly curtails a designer’s freedom in the floor and sidepod areas. The intention of the change was to improve lateral impact protection while also reducing costs. Engine All the changes this year are big, but this – without question – is the big one. The 2.4-liter V8 engine F1 has used since 2006 has been retired and is replaced with a 1.6-liter V6 unit, featuring direct injection, a turbocharger and a limit of 15,000 rpm, down from 18,000 rpm in 2013. Energy Recovery Despite the smaller engine, 2014 isn’t expected to see any shortfall in horsepower thanks

to an uprated KERS and the addition of a second energy recovery system. The KERS motor-generator (MGU-K) can supply 120kW rather than the 60kW of the old system. More significantly the MGU-K can release up to 4MJ per lap. That’s 10 times as much as was allowable in 2013 and means KERS will be either recovering or releasing energy for most of the lap. While the MGU-K can release 4MJ per lap, it can only recover 2MJ. Any other energy recovered will come from the second energy recovery system. The MGU-H (K for Kinetic, H for Heat) is part of the turbocharger assembly and recovers heat energy from the flow of exhaust gases. It will serve several functions: preventing the turbo from over-speeding and feeding excess energy into either battery storage or directly to the MGU-K. Taken together, the 2014 ERS will be allowed to provide 10 times the

energy of 2013 KERS and will supply a motor delivering twice as much power. Battery Pack More recovered energy means more energy storage, which means a bigger battery pack. It’s now required that the batteries pack weigh between 20-25 kg. It will also be necessary to place the battery in the center of the car (under the fuel cell) as one coherent unit. Rear Brakes For 2014, the rear brakes get a powered rear braking system with a degree of electronic control. This will help control the car and counter problems experienced previous with harvesting energy under braking. Exhaust For 2014 F.1 cars will feature exhaust exits 170-185 mm behind

the rear axle line. When the exhaust blown diffuser became an issue a few years, F1 regulators sought to stop the exploitation of exhaust gasses for aerodynamic gain. The first solution was to legislate exhausts that exited the bodywork pointing skywards. Teams countered this by sculpting their bodywork to take advantage of the Coanda effect and recapture the fluid flow. regulations. Its original purpose was to add rigidity to the rear wing structure; to replace it, teams will be able to use vertical stabilizers. Another change to the rear wing is that the main plane will be a little shallower. Gearbox Gearboxes will have eight forward gears instead of the seven to which we’re accustomed. As the gearbox ratios are going to be fixed from 2014 forwards (they may be changed once in 2014), the extra gear adds a little more scope.

Weight Everything is heavier in 2014. The minimum weight of the complete power unit is 145 kg (the 2013 engine had a minimum weight of 95 kg) and the (unfuelled) minimum weight of the car plus driver will rise to 691 kg, up from 642 kg. The increase is due to the inclusion of the heavier power unit and tyres sets. RGM

INTERNAL COMBUSTION V6 ENGINE

From 2014 onwards, the cars will be powered by avant-garde powertrain technology, with a powerful turbocharged internal combustion engine coupled to sophisticated energy recovery systems. Energy efficiency will reach levels never seen in the sport before, with two types of energy propelling the cars. The internal combustion engine will produce power through consumption of traditional carbon-based fuel, while electrical energy will be harvested from exhaust and braking by two motor generator units. The two systems will work in harmony, with teams and drivers balancing the use of the two types of energy throughout the race. The advent of this new technology means that the word ‘engine’ is no longer sufficient: instead the sport will refer to ‘Power Units.’

V6 is shorthand for an internal combustion engine with its cylinders arranged in two banks of 3 cylinders arranged in a ‘V’ configuration over a common crankshaft. The Renault Energy F1 V6 has a displacement of 1.6 litres and will make around 600bhp, or more than 3 times the power of a Clio RS. Contrary to popular belief, the ICE is not the easiest part of the Power Unit to design as the architecture is very different to the incumbent V8s. On account of the turbocharger the pressures within the combustion chamber are enormous – almost twice as much as the V8. The crankshaft and pistons will be subject to massive stresses and the pressure within the combustion chamber may rise to 200bar, or over 200 times ambient pressure.

Acting as a generator, it absorbs power from the turbine shaft to convert heat energy from the exhaust gases. The electrical energy can be either directed to the MGU-K or to the battery for storage for later use. The MGU-H is also used to control the speed of the turbocharger to match the air requirement of the engine (eg. to slow it down in place of a wastegate or to accelerate it to compensate for turbo lag.) The MGU-H produces alternative current, but the battery is continuous current so a highly complex convertor is needed. Very high rotational speeds are a challenge as the MGU-H is coupled to a turbocharger spinning at speeds of up to 100,000rpm. BATTERY (OR ENERGY STORE) Heat and Kinetic Energy recovered can be consumed immediately if required, or used to charge the Energy Store, or battery. The stored energy can be used to propel the car with the MGU-K or to accelerate the turbocharger with the MGU-H.

Compared to 2013 KERS, the ERS of the 2014 power unit will have twice the power (120 kW vs 60 kW) and the energy contributing to performance is ten times greater. The battery has a minimum weight of 20kg to power a motor that produces 120kW. Each 1kg feeds 6kw (a huge power to weight ratio), which will produce large electromagnetic forces. INTERCOOLER

PIT STOP

The intercooler is used to cool the engine intake air after it has been compressed by the turbocharger.xxxThe presence of an intercooler (absent in the normally aspirated V8 engines), coupled with the increase in power from the energy recovery systems makes for a complicated integration process since the total surface area of the cooling system and radiators has significantly increased over 2013. Integration of the intercooler and other radiators is key but effective cooling without incorporating giant radiators is a major challenge and key performance factor.

The 2014 IndyCar season promises to be one of the most exciting in years

James Hinchcliffe is focusing on defending his win in last year’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the race that will once again open the new season… more than 20,000 feet of steel-reinforced concrete block will line the picturesque but challenging 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit that incorporates a runway of Albert Whitted Airport. “St. Pete has been a special race for as long as I’ve been going said Hinchcliffe - being out there on the water, it’s a cool atmosphere. race season and finish eighth in the championship standings. “Obviously, with what happened last year, it holds a special place in my heart. It was a very emotional day last year on race day for all the right reasons. That’s nice because in racing you normally have very emotional days for the wrong reasons more often than you do for all the right ones. For me, personally, on track it made a big difference because when I was then in situations later in the year where a win was on the line I felt a lot less pressure because I think there was a big amount of pressure to get that first win. I think it really does free your mind up a little bit when you’re in those circumstances - added James - again knowing that, ‘Hey, I’ve been here, I know I can do it, let’s focus and get the job done,’ rather than make yourself over-analyze and make a mistake.”

The 2014 IndyCar season, set to debut in the streets of St. Petersburg (Florida) on March 30, promises to be one of the most exciting in years. Every driver seems to be a title contender and is ready to give battle to a fierce opposition. At least this is what drivers are letting through after an off-season packed with training, testing sessions and for many… sports car racing, as 16 Indycar drivers were part of the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. On the “business” side IndyCar announced recently enhancements to the bonus structure and the 21 entrants that will be part of its Leaders Circle program for the 2014 IndyCar Series season. The Leaders Circle program was established in 2002 to provide incentives to teams that participate full time in the IndyCar Series. Each Leaders Circle member is assured a minimum of $1 million for

PIT STOP Jaques Villeneuve is back! Schmidt Peterson Motosports co-owners Sam Schmidt and Ric Peterson recently announced that the team will field an Indianapolis 500 entry for 1995 Indianapolis 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve. “Just that it is the biggest race in the world and that it was exciting - said the Canadian champion - It was a great opportunity. Schmidt Peterson Motosports is a great team, a great car that will be well-prepared. It was a chance to do something good. You know I’m older in racing, got kids, and actually that’s another drive. I’m a racer at heart and I will always be. That’s what keeps me going. That’s what keeps me alive. I don’t want to be for my kids just the guy that used to race that they can see in books. I want them to see and live what I’ve already lived, to see it through my doing it actively. It’s actually a positive effect to have kids.”

the 18-race season if the entrant successfully qualifies for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. “The Leaders Circle program is an important resource for fulltime teams in the IndyCar Series - said Derrick Walker, President of Competition and Operations, INDYCAR - we are looking at ways to continue to grow this resource in the future and further reward our teams for their continued participation in the series.” Twenty entrants were selected based on their standing in the 2013 IndyCar Series entrant points, including Bryan Herta Autosport (car number and driver TBA). The entry for the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske car driven by Juan Pablo Montoya is also a new Leaders Circle member for 2014 through a partnership with Dragon Racing. Additionally, all entrants will continue to compete for bonuses that will now be paid to the top10 finishers at each IndyCar Series race aside from the races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indy 500), Pocono Raceway and Auto Club Speedway. The race bonuses are: $30,000 for first place, $20,000 for second place, $15,000 for third, $10,000 for fourth, $9,000 for fifth, $8,000 for sixth, $7,000 for seventh, $5,000 for eighth, $4,000 for ninth and $2,000 for 10th at each race. remaining the same as other races. Non-Leaders Circle entrants will compete for payouts awarded to the top-five finishers. In each race excluding the races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indy 500), Pocono and Auto Club, the highest-finishing non-Leaders Circle entrant will receive $20,000. At Pocono and Auto Club, the highest finishing team will receive $30,000. The next-placed Non-Leaders Circle entrants will receive $15,000, and $10,000, respectively. The fourth and fifth-placed Non-Leader Circle entrants will each receive $5,000 at all races excluding the Indianapolis 500.

PIT STOP This year’s season won’t see Dario Franchitti take the green flag. The four time IndyCar champion and three time Indy 500 winner saw his racing career cut short by a terrible accident during last year’s Grand Prix of Houston. After suffering severe injuries to his back, doctors have not cleared the driver to return to racing.

INDYCAR The IndyCar Series driver champion and championship entrant again will share a $1 million bonus, with second through 10th in the standings sharing bonuses of $250,000, $90,000, $75,000, $60,000, $50,000, $40,000, $35,000, $25,000 and $15,000. Contingency prizes will continue to be awarded at IndyCar Series events.

They’ve been working really hard all winter. It’s really paying off. I think it’s needless to say that work is rewarded. As far as we’re concerned, it’s been the hardest winter in terms of work that I’ve seen my team go through in a long time. It makes you feel great because you know the level of preparation is quite high. I don’t know how long it’s going to take before we do it, but only because competition is so difficult in IndyCar these days. You look at the number of cars you need to beat to just get there, it’s really hard. But at the end of the day everybody has the same equipment pretty much. It’s just a matter of how you use it, how much work you put into it to get it right.” Team Penske’s Will Power, a three-time series championship runner-up, endorsed Sebastien Bourdais as

a 2014 title contender: “He’s the quickest guy during testing. Yeah, I expect him to be a contender. Weird last year, so competitive in 2012, he turned up, the tide changed a bit, he struggled, but then was there at the end of the year again. This guy is a four-time champion. And KV is a very good team. Resources and the money behind him.”

PROUD TO REPRESENT COLOMBIA After racing in NASCAR for seven full seasons, 1999 CART Series champion and 2000 Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya will be back in a single-seater IndyCar race car this year with Team Penske. During the preseason tests at Sebring, Montoya seemed to be struggling to get used to the car, but nobody in the business has doubts he will be back fighting for wins.

Sebastian Saavedra

“I’m really excited. I mean, I feel like I’m not where I want to be yet with the car. I feel we have come a long way. It’s weird. Sometimes we’re really good, some we’re average. The first Sebring test was hor-

rible. I feel like Sonoma was pretty good; I was really happy. The NASCAR cars were very different - added Montoya - there was a lot of movement. This is the opposite because in NASCAR the limit of the car is very easy: the big thing is you’re driving it too hard. In IndyCar, you can’t drive it hard enough, or at least I can’t yet. I’m leaving a lot on the table. I think that’s the biggest thing.“ Through a half dozen test sessions and a month before the season opens, Juan Pablo Montoya isn’t looking at the depth of the field. “The braking in the corners, it’s unbelievable. The grip level of these cars, it’s like an eye-opening, to be honest. It’s going to take me time to win. How much time, I don’t know. I’m not expecting to go out the first race and win to be honest... I have to understand strategies and everything Right now, I’m my biggest rival. I feel like a complete rookie right now - the 1999 CART champion said - because I feel like I got to do a job, push myself. It’s good to

Juan Pablo Montoya

have a guy like Will Power on the team that’s really quick and gets the job done… and Helio Castroneves has a lot of experience. If I have my experience plus what they do, I think it’s pretty good.” Sebastian Saavedra credits countryman Montoya with having an indirect hand in his path to reaching the IndyCar Series. “I was only 8 years old when he won Indy 500. I was just starting my gokart career then - said Saavedra, who embarks on his first season with KV AFS Racing - it surely gave a little bit of, ‘Hey, if you’re a Colombian, you can make it happen’ Since then we’ve had a couple of contacts. I raced in the 500 miles (karting race) of Brazil; that was actually the first time we got to speak. Since then we never spoke again until the Race of the Stars at the end of the year, when we became a lot closer. I do accept that he’s one of those guys that came through on a very important time of my life, thinking, ‘Is this what I want to do for my

whole career?’ And it was, and of course, Roberto Guerrero was another guy that came through on my first Indy 500 in 2010. I’ve been very blessed with very good people around.” Montoya, Saavedra and Andretti Autosport rookie Carlos Munoz give Colombia three drivers in the series: “A lot of people are going to follow IndyCar in Colombia - Munoz added people are starting to talk a lot that there are three Colombians in INDYCAR. When Montoya won the Champ Car title and the Indy 500, there were a lot of people following him. He was a symbol for me when I was a kid, an example for me and many Colombian drivers, to follow him. I have some pictures of him when I was small. He was at a gokart race with his brother when I was small. It’s a strange feeling when you’re small, you’re looking at him as a big driver. But once I’m here, you just put your helmet on, everyone is the same.” RGM

FDA Florida Winter Series

WELCOME TO THE SU The Ferrari Driver Academy is an initiative aimed at helping develop young talents into the motor sport world with the objective of training them for a future in Formula 1

FDA Florida winter series By Niccolò Gargiulo

For the last three years FDA, under the guidance of Luca Baldisserri, has developed a programme during which the young Academy drivers take English language lessons, study mental preparation and are coached in the concept of improving team spirit, physical preparation, as well as undergoing tests on the simulator and on track. This year’s FDA programme has begun with a new initiative, that was received positively by all the participants: the Florida Winter Series.

Antonio Fuoco

Takashi Kasai

The young drivers of the FDA (and other youngsters from the most competitive European categories) gathered from January through February in the Sunshine State of Florida to compete with F. Abarth cars in a four round event (preceded by a collective test) at the challenging tracks of Sebring, Palm Beach and HomesteadMiami. Each round meant plenty of track time for the drivers (4 free practice hours, 40 minutes of qualify session and 3 races) giving them the opportunity to keep working on their skills, during a season when the weather would not allow such training in Europe. “We needed to find a place where our drivers could find similar conditions to those where they will race competitively in Europe” told us Luca Baldisserri. But the Florida Winter Series is much more than that: “Being all together for almost two months is an important part of this experience. We wanted to work on team-building, teach our young guys that helping each other and working together is

part of the motor sport spirit. I believe the Florida Winter Series turned out to be a very positive experience. We reached our goal to create a real training camp, and the drivers fully understood the philosophy of this initiative, that is to train and test through competition, by simulating a racing week-end, a concept never before put into place in the world of motor sport.”

MARCIELLO ADVANCES TO THE GP2 SERIES Raffaele Marciello, one of the best FDA members, won the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title with Prema Powerteam and now he is making the next step on the motor-racing ladder by advancing to the GP2 Series. Right after the 2013 season finale, the 18-year-old Italian was offered the opportunity to demonstrate his skills at the wheel of a GP2 vehicle – and did so in impressive style, thus underlining the reputation of Formula 3 as unique talent pool. The logical consequence of all these facts is that some days ago the Italian young talent signed a 2014 contract with Racing Engineering team. Alfonso de Orléans- Borbón, President of Racing Engineering: “I am proud of the choice to race with Raffaele this year and confident that his past experience and support of the Ferrari Driver Academy will be a benefit for Racing Engineering in our targets for the season. This confidence is also a result of the efforts and great amount of work that this team has been producing during these last years. With this, we are very happy to have among our ranks the current European F3 champion for the 2014 season, something that will motivate us even more to equal, if not improve, the results in GP2 that Racing Engineering had last season”.

FDA Florida winter series FDA General Manager Luca Baldisserri

But Luca Baldisserri also stressed how important it is for Ferrari and FDA to begin the new year in the American continent, also opening to the possibility of new scouting activities in the region: “Finding talent is difficult, especially in Europe, where the economic crisis struck the hopes of many young drivers to get to the highest levels of motor sport. The American economy though seems to be recovering pretty well. The American market is thus fundamental to us. I hope to see American drivers in next year’s Series.” Lance Stroll

Enrico Zanarini, who spent most of his career managing drivers in Formula 1 and is now manager for Antonio Fuoco is enthusiast about the Ferrari Driver Academy: “Compared to other driving schools,

Max Verstappen

Ferrari has the best organization in the business. The dedication to the drivers is unique as they literally receive a 24/7 assistance, from the technical point of view to the physical and mental preparation. The drivers are in total connection with Ferrari, they live in Maranello, they breathe Maranello, they eat Maranello and they have a terrific organization to back them up, thanks also to Team Prema with which Ferrari is now working.”

Dennis VandeLaar takes the checkered flag at Sebring

Antonio Fuoco, reigning Formula Renault 2.0 Alps champion and winner of four races in the Florida Winter Series considers FWS as one of his best training experiences: “You cannot test in Europe in this season. Being here means you can try a lot of different things you wouldn’t be able to try otherwise. I personally have just one year of experience in single seater race cars, so the more I test the better it is and I am really learning a lot from this experience. But Ia also have to underline that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Ferrari Driver Academy. I need to thank Ferrari and my manager as I feel very lucky to be part of this.”

FDA Florida winter series On his side Raffaele Marciello, European Formula 3 champion, commented: “It is always important to test whenever possible. The tracks are similar to the European ones after all, just Sebring was a little bumpy. You have ups and downs in every situation, also during this Series, but I have to say it was fun … and being together with the other drivers all the time meant a lot of fun away from the track too...”

ENDURANCE

Great start of the fia World Endurance Championship with the announcement of a full season grid of thirtyone cars, representing 10 different nations. As in Formula 1 the changes to the Technical Regulations for the 2014 season can justifiably be called a revolution. For the first time, the output of a race car is no longer subject to targeted restrictions. Instead, limitations are imposed on energy consumption while new engineering freedoms are allowed.

“When the FIA and the ACO came together four years ago to formulate the concept for the World Endurance Championship – confirms FIA President Jean Todt - our shared vision was to return sportscar racing to the prominence and popularity it enjoyed in the past. Then, its prestige was founded on its ability to provide thrilling, heroic racing on a truly international stage in an environment that delivered fascinating technological invention. It is therefore a source of great pride to me that as we approach the start of the FIA World Endurance Championship’s third season I can happily say that the competition is meeting all of those goals. With new teams, new

Ferrari 458 GTLME

drivers and the prospect of even closer competition this year I am sure that the 2014 World Endurance Championship will be a classic.” LMP1 will become the largest segment with no fewer than nine cars, six for the LMP1-H and three for the LMP1-L classes. In the Hybrid division there are two cars for reigning world champions Audi, with the next evolution of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, two for Toyota Racing with the new Toyota TS040 and two entries for Porsche as they prepare the new 919 for its first public appearance at the official test at Le Castellet at the end of March.

AF Corse will run a pair of Ferrari 458s for Luis Perez Companc and for Stephen Wyatt. The 2013 Team Champion 8Star Motorsports is back to defend its title with its F458, with team principal and lead driver Enzo Potolicchio looking to add the 2014 Drivers’ crown to his list of accomplishments. The fourth F458 will be for ELMS Champion Johnny Mowlem and run by RAM Racing. Proton Competition returns with

PIT STOP Do fans have to fear that the race drivers in 2014 will be acting with great restraint in order to save energy? “Not to worry - says Lucas di Grassi - even though consumption may heavily vary, the lap times are very similar and that’s why we’re running at similar speeds. It’s basically about saving a lot of energy in some sections – for instance by lifting earlier – without driving a lot slower on a whole lap. I’m impressed about how well and precisely Audi Sport has already been handling these tasks and is always able to help us with specific calculations and advice. Our sport will continue to be great fun. It’s just that we’ll be using a lot less energy in it than ever before.”

Christian Ried as the lead driver for its Porsche 911 GT3 RSR while Belgian team Prospeed Competition joins the FIA WEC with a 911 for Francois Perrodo. The two Aston Martin entries by Aston Martin Racing will see two Vantage V8 cars for Denmark’s Kristian Poulsen and Canada’s Paul Dalla Lana. “The ACO are very pleased to see a fantastic grid for the third season of the FIA World Endurance championship – says Pierre Fillon, President of the ACO These - thirty-one cars represent the cream of endurance racing and they are the ambassadors for Le Mans on

the world stage. 2014 will see a number of changes for the LMP1 class. We are very happy to welcome Porsche back to the top level of endurance and we are looking forward to seeing the battles on track between Porsche, Audi and Toyota. We also have the new technical rules for LMP1, which brings more real world relevance to our sport as these hybrid systems will be used by the manufacturers on their road cars in years to come. We are also pleased to see three cars entered in the new LMP1 Light category and we are also looking forward to seeing the new cars from Rebellion and Lotus in action.”

AUDI KINGDOM “The LMP sports prototype class is ideal for demonstrating Audi’s efficiency technology in racing emphasizes Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport - this category has systematically evolved into a class of technological leadership. The world’s most complex race cars are developed for it. That the efficiency targets in LMP1 racing largely match the requirements for current and future passenger cars perfectly fits Audi’s claim and commitment.”

Ever since the brand with the four rings entered LMP1 racing in 1999, the efficiency of the sports prototypes from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm has continually improved. The major steps in the powertrain sector included the introduction of TFSI gasoline direct injection (2001), TDI diesel technology (2006) and e-tron quattro diesel hybrid technology (2012). “In 2014, though, the thinking has fundamentally changed - explains Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport - traditionally, technical regulations

in motorsport have been focused on limiting engine power output, for instance though factors like cubic capacity limits, relatively tight constraints for turbocharging systems, or through air restrictors. By contrast, the absolute amount of fuel available for a race has typically been unlimited, and this was the case in LMP1 racing as well. But now, a maximum amount of energy per lap is specified. And we need to make the best of it. By taking this step, the FIA, the ACO and all the parties involved have managed to get a set of regulations off the ground with a straightforward focus on efficiency while continuing to make thrilling sport and entertaining races possible.” In simple terms, the new regulations challenge the entrants to make the best use of a prescribed amount of fuel on each lap in order to cover the longest distance within a certain space of time (such as the 24-hour race duration at Le Mans) and to thereby win. A chart shows the amount of energy allocated to each powertrain concept. Diesel and gasoline engines are permissible. Furthermore, for the manufacturers with factory commitments, hybrid systems are prescribed in four different performance classes

and a maximum amount of energy is defined for each of these classes. This results in a thrilling sporting constellation. Chris Reinke, Head of LMP at Audi Sport explains: “If the amount of energy available per lap is not fully consumed, it will be lost, as it may not additionally be used on the subsequent lap. This is a principal difference to the previous regulations, which did not limit consumption in the race. As of this year, the engineers have clearly more freedom with respect to the solutions they can use to achieve the new goal. Audi has opted for an all-new V6 TDI engine and the e-tron quattro drive system.”

THE TOYOTA CHALLENGE Toyota Racing entered two cars for the WEC season, including the Le Mans 24 Hours and for the third consecutive year, Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre, Kazuki Nakajima, Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin will drive for Toyota Racing. They are joined by test and reserve driver Mike Conway. “We are very much looking forward to this new season with our new car, the TS040 Hybrid –

says Team’s President Yoshiaki Kinoshita - the 2014 season is an important one for Toyota Racing; after two years we have built up a lot of experience and now, with new regulations, all teams start from a level playing field. This is an exciting challenge for us and one we are determined to succeed in. Those new regulations confirm that the FIA World Endurance Championship is the proving ground for advanced road-relevant technology in motorsport and this fits perfectly with our approach. We are competing in order to test the latest hybrid technology in the most extreme motorsport environments and this has a direct influence on future road car technology. This year we will benefit from a fourwheel drive hybrid system using our proven super-capacitor storage solution and this will provide a very substantial acceleration boost. It will be fascinating to see how the various solutions compare; personally I can’t wait to get started.” The TS040 Hybrid prototype has been designed according to new regulations and takes the technology to the next level. The addition of an Aisin AW motor/generator on the front axle, in combination with the Denso unit at the rear, means the Toyota System now provides power to all four wheels.

FULLGRID

Under deceleration, the motor/ generators apply braking force in combination with traditional mechanical brakes to generate energy, which is transferred via a Denso inverter to the Nisshinbo super-capacitor. During acceleration, the motor/generator reverses its function, acting as a motor to deliver a significant power boost. That four-wheel-drive hybrid power is allied to a petrol-powered V8 engine. The chassis of the TS040 is designed, developed, manufactured, built and operated by Toyota Motorsport in Cologne and it represents a major evolution on the TS030 HYBRID thanks to advanced aerodynamics and lightweight design.

PORSCHE DRIVERS CHOICE Porsche enters the 2014 World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with two innovative LMP1 factory cars with number 14 and 20. The 919 Hybrid was developed to meet the new efficiency regulations for the top category of Le Mans prototypes. It has a highly complex hybrid drive system comprising a small-capacity supercharged V4 combustion engine, an

electric motor driving the front wheels and two energy recovery systems. It is interesting to underline that Porsche works drivers Romain Dumas (car number 14) and Timo Bernhard (car number 20) are each assigned to a different LMP1 prototype in the WEC. As a result, each of the two 919 Hybrid cars will be piloted by a Le Mans overall winner: Dumas (France, 36) and Bernhard (Germany, 33) both achieved this success with Audi in 2010. The other four LMP1 Porsche works drivers,Brendon Hartley (New Zealand, 24), Neel Jani (Switzerland, 30), Marc Lieb (Germany, 33) and Mark Webber (Australia, 37), will take turns at the wheel during the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship with the final lineup yet to be determined. “It was an obvious choice to split these two pilots to the two cars – explained Team Principal Andreas Seidel – because of their special long-distance and Le Mans experience. The confirmation of our entry is another milestone on our road to Le Mans. We are all excited to meet our competitors for the first time at the official test at Paul Ricard at the end of March and of course at the WEC season kick-off at Silverstone in April”.

INTERVIEW

INCREDIBLE HAR

RLI

Harli White: “Racing means everything to me”

by Roberto del Papa

In his ‘Piloti che gente…’ book, Enzo Ferrari asserts that ‘racing drivers are not special subjects. They’re not so different from many others’, but looking at the incredible story of Harli White, a proud and determined eighteenyear-old Oklahoma girl, you can catch a glimpse of those qualities, made of natural talent, luck and determination, that can make someone a little special.

HARLIWHITE To get out alive from an apocalyptic fire when you are twelve years old, during your very first race, and then recover, take the wheel back in your hands and win first one, then two, then a lot of other races until you win a championship is not for everyone, at least not in the real world, one that’s not like fairy tales or Hollywood movies. Harli did it, she lives for her passion and keeps her dreams intact. Two months ago Harli raced in the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, replacing Blake Hahn at the wheel of the Hard 8 Racing car, finishing her strong ride in the C Main due to a technical problem, and today she’s here to explain us what it means to race not to feel dead. Harli, let’s start with the recent Chili Bowl. After a spectacular qualifying round your race ended in the C Main due to a mechanical problem. Can you consider your Chili a success anyway? “I’ve raced the Chili Bowl the last 3 years now, this year was our best finish yet. I was really happy with how the car felt, and I was really comfortable. I feel like if the bolt wouldn’t of feel out of the steering arm, we could’ve transferred to the B main which is a pretty big deal. Overall 2014 Chili Bowl was a big success.”

Your 2013 season has been great with the OCRS championship title. You earned seven wins and 19 top5s. Can you te us your feelings. “It still seems unreal to me, 2 Championships in one year is just amazing. I’m so blessed to have had a great car all year long.”

You were born in Oklahoma, near Tulsa, it was natural for you to become a sprint cars racer? Does your family support you? “I grew up around dirt track racing, my dad raced modifieds. I started running a micro sprint because of my age, I started when I was 12 and have worked my way up to the Sprint Cars now.” For many racing fans of other Continents the world of dirt racing

is really unknow. What does it mean in the States to be a dirttrack racer and see over 15.000 people go crazy for you? “Dirt Track racing is a fun family event that everyone should experience. For me to see all the fans in the stands standing up and clapping at all the drivers is an amazing feeling. I love it, I just smile and wave the whole time. Even though they can’t see my smile, they can see my wave.”

After your nearly-fatal crash you told your parents - If I cannot race then I might as well be dead This demonstrates your grit, determination and strength. What does it mean to get out of such a hell and go back in the car again? “It means everything to me to be able to get back in a race car and do the best that I can do. If I wasn’t racing today I’m not sure what I’d be doing.” Your dream is to become a NASCAR driver, right? Which driver you get inspiration from? “It is my dream to become a NASCAR driver. It’s going to be a tough road but I have Faith that I will make it one day. I look at myself as inspiration, it’s up to me to get myself there!” What do you expect from 2014? Will we see you compete at a national level? “I’m so excited to be running all ASCS shows this year, we won’t be running on the National tour this year. We will be running the ASCS Sooner and Lonestar regions, and hopefully catch some of the big ASCS shows close to home. It is going to be a great year, full of lots of racing.” Tell us a bit of you, who is Harli in her private life? “I spend time with my Family and Friends, go to Church all the time. Just a small town Oklahoma girl!”

If you have to choose between Bryan Clauson and Donny Schatz, which side would you be on? “That’s a tough one, I love watching them both race. I’d have to pick both!” Besides NASCAR you follow other series like IndyCar or Formula 1? “I try to keep up with some Indy car racing, but most of the time I’m always watching the dirt track racing.”
