This year’s Gumball 3000 saw the colorful caravan traveling from the sunshine and parties of Miami to the southern hospitality of Atlanta. New York provided the next stopover where all 120 supercars were loaded onto cargo planes and own over the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland. After heading to London, Gumballers crossed the Channel to Paris then through France and Spain to Barcelona. Then it was just a short ferry ride to the finish line in Ibiza.

Gumball 3000 was created in 1999 by ex-racing driver, designer and British entrepreneur Maximillion Cooper. It was born from Cooper’s vision to combine cars, music, fashion and entertainment to create a pop culture lifestyle brand of the future. Cooper derived the word ‘Gumball’ from New York artist Andy Warhol after he used it to describe how the public chew up and spit out popular culture like chewing gum; and ‘3000’ as a nod to Cooper’s fascination with the future. Cooper decided to launch his lifestyle brand concept by inviting 50 of his influential and celebrity friends to join him on a road-trip around Europe to experience an adrenaline fuelled-adventure, driving incredible cars and hosting glamorous parties each evening.

GTI ROADSTER

(

A

t the legendary GTI meet at Wörthersee (28 to 31 May), Volkswagen presented a show car which was originally created as a purely computer generated car in bits and bytes for the PlayStation®3 classic “Gran Turismo 6” the “GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo”. The two-seat convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine that produces a power of 370 kW / 503 PS. The V6 TSI develops a maximum torque of 560 Nm between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm; 500 Nm of that torque is already available at 2,000 rpm in the direct-injection petrol engine. The enormous power of the TSI is transferred to the 20-inch wheel-tyre combination via a 7- speed dualclutch gearbox (DSG) and all-wheel drive system (4MOTION). The lightweight 1420 kg super sports car reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. V/max: 309 km/h! Most spectacular GTI ever In designing the “GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo”, Volkswagen revolutionized the visual concept of the “Design Vision GTI” concept car that was presented at Wörthersee in 2013. It was further developed, reinvented and sent into the future as a roadster. Important to know: design highlights of the 2013 concept car are the C pillars and side sills that flare out from the body on a second level. Designers exteriorised them as independent body elements to create space for the car’s much larger track widths and specially developed 20-inch wheels. Despite its extreme modifications, the “Design Vision GTI” had a very homogeneous appearance. The reason is that designers based their work precisely on the fundamentals of Volkswagen Design-DNA – despite all conceivable freedoms of design. The same applies to the new “GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo”. A superlative two-seat convertible GTI which – and this is crucial – takes up the idea of the C pillars and side sills (carbon on the Roadster) and expresses it on another level.

(

GTI ROADSTER

(

GTI of the future The fact is that the design of the “GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo” launches the original GTI and its seven evolutionary stages far into the future. The visual image of the visionary two-seater already promises a direct driving experience. Its extreme acceleration potential in interplay with its extremely sweptback windscreen makes the car very easy to experience directly, both in the game and in reality. The driver sits in the monocoque and races around the track of the GT6 world from the height and perspective of a Formula race car driver.

Aerodynamics is everything The roadster body was aerodynamically optimised by numerous modifications. Visually prominent at the rear is the large spoiler or wing. It creates a strong downforce, which transfers the extreme engine power to the road in a controlled way via an all-wheel drive system (4MOTION). In the overall visual concept, it is fascinating how the rear spoiler is integrated into the design of the “GTI Roadster”. Background: on the “Design Vision GTI” presented in 2013, the outlying C pillars transitioned into the roof. Now – as a defining design element of the side profile – they form a roll-over protection bar. The rear spoiler, with its lengthened design, gives the appearance of a wing hovering behind the roadster. The “GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo” sports a radiant, intensive red metallic colour, a new interpretation of the “Tornado Red” monochrome colour – which is the classic GTI red. Side profile – doors swivel up and forward Just as cool as the rear spoiler are the doors that swivel up and forward. Visually, they split an extremely prominent character line into an upper and lower half. The contours of the doors are also very distinctive, because they are framed by the side sills (trimmed with the “Gran Turismo” badge at the rear), the C pillar and the extremely flared wheel housings. A small but exclusive detail on the sides: the illuminated GTI badge that is integrated in the “tornado” line. On the upper door section, the side window forms a line that rises forward with the low-profile windscreen. In this area, the GTI Roadster has the appearance of a speedboat; the mirrors with their carbon shells that are mounted on the door shoulders have the look of small wings.

(

GTI ROADSTER

(

Customised 20-inch wheels The 20-inch GTI alloy wheels also have a new design. Designers worked body coloured elements into the wheels which are equipped with central locks; these elements form a red circle when the wheels rotate. The front wheels (8.5J x 20, ET32) have 235/35 ZR20 tyres, while the rear wheels (9.5J x 20, ET25) are equipped with 275/30 ZR20 tyres. A close look between the wheel spokes reveals the extremely sturdy ceramic brake discs. On the front wheels, the brake callipers grip discs that are 380 mm in diameter; the rear discs are 356 mm in diameter. Front end – hovering modules Viewed directly from the front, the roadster looks like a typical GTI – but one originating from the next decade. Since the concept car is just slightly over one metre tall, the front end was shaped to be extremely low

and wide. The GTI front end has a three-dimensional design with bumper modules that appear to hover. Viewed from underneath: a carbon motorsport spoiler shaped as “blades” fills the space between the GTI and the road, and it increases downforce at the front axle. Above them are the bumper, which transitions into the wings on the sides, and a centrally integrated wide radiator grille with a screen in GTI honeycomb design. Its structure intentionally makes use of the available space, creating a distinct three-dimensional effect. The radiator grille is framed by a surface finished in body colour. To the sides of this surface are the vertically arranged LED daytime driving lights and the painted exterior surfaces of the bumper. Above them are the classic red GTI radiator grille crossstripe, VW badge and GTI logo, another air inlet with honeycomb screen and dual LED headlights.

(

GTI ROADSTER

(

Beneath the headlights, there are two other narrow LED strips for the daytime running lights, which form an unmistakable light signature together with the vertical daytime running lights. Highly precise in styling: the outer lines of the lower bumper air inlet wrap over the contours of the bonnet and towards the rear. Rear section has 3D look Viewed from the rear, the observer sees how the carbon blades at the front continue uninterrupted across the side sills and into the rear section as a wrap-around element. At the rear, they serve as aerodynamically optimised air guides. Together with the narrow elements in body colour that run parallel to them they frame the lateral air vents and the carbon diffuser in the middle. This diffuser is characterised by strong vertical precious metal slats and two rear light elements mounted in positions similar to those in motorsport. Extending to the sides above them is the bumper with trapezoidal dual exhaust tailpipes (with GTI badge) positioned in the middle of the car. Uncompromising sporty ergonomics The driver and passenger are enclosed in a dual monocoque made of carbon. The two

sides are partitioned by a middle bar that ascends from rear to front; it is open below. In this lower area, a fire extinguisher was made equally accessible to both driver and passenger, just as in a race car. The “GTI Roadster is equipped with two race shell seats. The seating position is very low, nearly

lying down, so it resembles the ergonomic proportions of a race car. The seats and the four-spoke grip steering wheel are covered with Alcantara. Another feature executed in motorsport style is the cockpit display on a V-shaped wing joined directly to the steering column trim – far forward of the driver. The

steering wheel is mounted on a very long, exposed steering column, which is typical of a race car. Designers located the red, illuminated rotary light switch and shift paddles (7-speed DSG) to the left and right of the steering wheel’s central axis. CGM

THE MOST POWERFUL CHALLENGER EVER All-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with 600-plus horsepower HEMI Hellcat engine delivers excellent performance, race-inspired interior and new technologies geared toward the driving enthusiast

(

2015 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT

(

D

riven by the five SRT performance hallmarks, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine are re-designed and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupes on the market with performanceenhancing technologies inside and out. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will feature the most powerful V-8 engine ever produced by Chrysler Group – the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8.

Awe-inspiring powertrains For 2015, the Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine is propelled by the new supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8. Its 600-plus horsepower rating will be the highest of any V-8 engine in Chrysler Group’s celebrated history. The all-new V-8 engine can be mated with an upgraded six-speed manual transmission or a beefy, new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic – the first such gearbox ever offered in the Dodge Challenger SRT’s time-honored segment.

The Dodge brand is tearing into its centennial year as America’s mainstream performance brand, celebrating its 100th anniversary on July 1, 2014. With the purification of the brand and consolidation with SRT, Dodge is getting back to its performance roots with every single model it oers. The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT coupes will be built at the Brampton (Ont.) Assembly plant. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2014.

(

2015 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT

(

This new HEMI Hellcat engine is Dodge and SRT’s first application of V-8 supercharger technology, delivering the full brand experience with fresh potency. The breakthrough supercharged engine features a forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened bearing surfaces. The result is a crank so well-engineered it can withstand firing pressures of 110 bar (1,595 psi) – the equivalent of five family sedans standing on each piston, every two revolutions. And its unique, specially tuned crank damper has been tested to 13,000 rpm. High-strength, forged-alloy pistons – developed using advanced telemetry measurement – are coupled to powder-forged connecting rods with high-load-capacity bushings and

diamond-like-carbon-coated piston pins. In addition to the supercharged HEMI V-8 in the Challenger SRT Hellcat, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT model also gets a power boost with upgrades to the 392 HEMI V-8. Horsepower climbs to 485 from 470, while peak torque jumps to 475 lb.-ft. from 470 lb.-ft. The 392 also can be mated with a new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic or the proven six-speed manual transmission. All-new Drive Modes tailor the driving experience to each individual driver Whether its on-road or on-track, Challenger SRT owners can personalize their drive experience via the all-new Drive Modes featu-

re. Drive Modes tailor the driving experience by controlling horsepower, transmission shift speeds, steering (Challenger SRT only), paddle shifters (automatic transmission only), traction and suspension. Drive Modes are pre-configured for Sport, Track and Default settings, while the Custom setting lets the driver customize the drive experience to their favorite settings. • Custom - Allows the driver to personalize the vehicle’s performance • Sport - Delivers increased vehicle performance capability over the Default Mode • Track - Delivers maximum vehicle performance capability on smooth, dry surfaces • Default - Activates automatically when starting the vehicle

Unlocking the power For the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs – red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full horsepower and torque potential of the Challenger SRT Hellcat engine; while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output. Valet Mode is offered on both Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine. When Valet Mode is activated, the following vehicle configurations are enabled: • Engine is remapped to significantly reduce horsepower and torque; limited to 4,000 rpm • Transmission locks out access to first gear and upshifts earlier than normal • Transmission will treat the manual shifter position the same as the drive position • Traction, steering and suspension are set to their “Street” settings • Steering-wheel paddle shifters are disabled • Drive Mode functions are disabled • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is enabled to Full-on • Launch Control is disabled The driver can activate and deactivate Valet Mode with a four-digit PIN code they create.

Outstanding ride and handling This new Dodge Challenger SRT rides on new, SRT-exclusive “77” eight-spoke 20 x 9-inch forged-aluminum “Hyper Black” wheels. Standard 245/45ZR20 (front and rear) Goodyear RSA2 All-Season or available Goodyear F1 Supercar Three-Season tires deliver serious grip and handling. Standard wheels on the Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine are new SRT-exclusive “Slingshot” split-seven spoke 20 x 9.5inch, lightweight forged-aluminum wheels with a matte black finish; available on the SRT 392 as part of the SRT Track Pack. New P275/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Nero tires (front and rear) provide all-season traction. Available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat are 20 x 9.5-inch, lightweight forged-aluminum wheels with a Brass Monkey/dark bronze finish. Benchmark braking Standard on the 2015 Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine is the largest front-brake package ever offered in an SRT vehicle, featuring all-new 390-mm (15.4-inch) Brembo two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers for outstanding heat management/thermal capacity and longevity. This upgraded highperformance brake package is available on the 392 HEMI SRT model as part of the SRT Track Pack. New anti-lock braking system (ABS), ESC and traction control systems are uniquely tuned and configurable for specific tire and powertrain configurations. Aggressive and functional exteriors Dodge and SRT designers and engineers spent a lot of time in the Chrysler Group’s fullscale wind tunnel in Auburn Hills, Michigan, developing and further refining the aggressive and functional exteriors on the Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT Hellcat. The result is a re-engineered Challenger capable of maximum aerodynamic performance for spirited driving on the road or the race track.

At the front, new fascia designs and all-new vertical-split grille provide a menacing update of its 1971 inspiration. A larger, powerbulge aluminum hood features a dedicated “cold-air” intake – a visual styling cue from the first Viper coupe built in 1996. The hood also includes dual air extractors to ensure effective removal of heat and reduced air turbulence in the engine compartment. The hood is standard in body color and is available in a Satin Black finish. Both models of the Challenger SRT feature all-aluminum hoods designed to reduce weight. All-new quad projector headlamps give a more detailed appearance, while a more aggressive brow “chops” the upper portion of the lamp design for an even more sinister attitude. Integrated projector fog lamps on the Challenger 392 SRT are pushed to the lower

corners to help accentuate the car’s width while illuminating the road. A new duck-bill fascia splitter helps improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine features a larger front splitter designed for optimal downforce to minimize lift. From the side, the signature muscular proportions and large thruster rear-quarter panels stand out from the crowd, while fender and belt lines tie together at the front and rear of the car to create a sleeker appearance. Differentiating the Challenger SRT Hellcat from the rest of the Challenger lineup are its “SUPERCHARGED” fender badges. Black sills accentuate the proportions of the muscle coupe and have been tuned in the wind tunnel to improve aerodynamics.

(

2015 DODGE CHALLENGER SRT

(

Out back, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT recalls the historic 1971 model’s styling with a new split tail-lamp design and rear fascia. The tail lamps feature the new signature LED graphic with its smooth glow of light that can be seen from blocks away. A redesigned rear valance helps the 2015 Challenger SRT models look more planted on the ground. A unique, taller rear spoiler on the SRT Hellcat features a raised SRT logo. Race-inspired, high-performance interiors Inside the 2015 Dodge Challenger is an allnew enthusiast-centric cockpit with worldclass materials, execution and technology. Key elements are inspired by the interior of the 1971 Challenger. The all-new cleanly executed instrument panel features a stamped aluminum bezel, which sets the tone for the driver’s display. For a high-tech look, an innovative 7-inch driver-selectable driver information display (DID) screen is centered in the gauge cluster and provides an almost infinitely customizable display. The all-new DID screen is flanked by new analog speedometer and tachometer gauges, which provide a heritage-inspired look with concave shapes and a hub-covered needle design, reminiscent of the “tic-toc-tach” gauges from the 1971 Challenger. Additionally, the dashboard’s center stack neatly houses the new standard 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. New for 2015 drivers can select one of the many offered backgrounds to connect the digital look and feel with their chosen interior package. A new, trapezoidal shaped stam ped aluminum center console provides Challenger SRT’s interior with a fresh look. The aluminum trim gets one of two finishes, “Hectic Mesh” for the Challenger 392 SRT and “Dark Engine Turn” for the Challenger SRT Hellcat.

QOROS TITLE SPONSOR OF WORLD TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

A

s title sponsor of the 2015 World Table Tennis Championships, Qoros played a key role during a special countdown ceremony held in the host city of Suzhou. Celebrating one year until the start of the tournament, Qoros provided the official cars for the event and presented five cars to the organisers for their use in the lead up to the championships. In addition, a fleet of 12 Qoros 3 Sedans – for which Suzhou was the final stop of an epic five-week ‘Hello, Qoros’ nationwide promotional tour – shuttled esteemed dignitaries to the ceremony at Suzhou Dushu Lake Theatre. During the ceremony, the championships’ official slogan was announced as “Enjoy pingpong”, which recognises the fondness that the Chinese public, and players and fans across the globe, have for the sport. Also unveiled for the first time were the official logo, which incorporates the Qoros brand name as the title sponsor, and the tournament mascot. The final designs were each chosen from hundreds of submissions in a nationwide competition that invited entri-

es from members of the public, design schools and professional design consultancies. Guo Qian, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Qoros, commented: “With just one year until the greatest table tennis tournament in the world starts here in Suzhou, Qoros is proud to be a major partner, playing an integral role in this countdown ceremony and in the preparations for the championships. As with any challenging and competitive endeavour, success in table tennis results from dedication, commitment and innovative techniques that secure a special edge over rivals. These are values that we share at Qoros, so we look ahead to the WTTC next year CGM with eager anticipation”.

GREEN LIGHT UP TO 2019 Volkswagen commits its future to rallying: the Volkswagen board has decided on a long-term involvement in the FIA World Rally Championship and given the green light for a continuation of its commitment to the series up to and including 2019. Volkswagen made its first appearance at the pinnacle of rallying with the Polo R WRC in 2013 and immediately won the title at the first attempt. This season, the works team is still unbeaten and leads the World Championship with its pairings of Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN). Andreas Mikkelsen (N), with co-driver Ola Fløene (N) at his side,

is fourth. “The FIA World Rally Championship is a very good platform for Volkswagen to demonstrate the efficiency, dynamics and reliability of its cars to a global public,” said Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Volkswagen Board Member and responsible for the brand’s motorsport programme. “The series is more closely oriented towards the technology used in the latest production vehicles than any other world championship, and based on the kind of real conditions that our customers all over the world experience on a daily basis. Furthermore, millions of people are passionate about this spectacular sport. The close interaction between the produc-

tion and motorsport development departments at Volkswagen, the sporting contest with our direct rivals in various markets, and the huge potential for marketing in the media led to our decision to commit to a long-term involvement in the World Rally Championship.” The involvement was originally planned for three years, from 2013 to 2015. The Board’s decision now sees this commitment extended by a further four years. “The Volkswagen Board’s decision to commit to the FIA World Rally Championship until 2019 makes us very proud. Volkswagen has never implemented a long-term motorsport pro-

gramme on this scale before,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “This faith is a huge motivation for our entire team not to rest on its laurels for a single second, but to continue to show the same degree of passion, determination and commitment to ensure we remain successful in the World Rally Championship. A prerequisite for the success of the championship itself is a format optimised for TV, in order to make rallying even more attractive for the general public. We call upon the promoters to work together with the manufacturers to significantly increase the media coverage of the series.”

Bentley scores hard-fought second win in a row After scoring an historic victory at Silverstone last month, the #7 M-Sport Bentley Continental GT3 of Guy Smith, Andy Meyrick and Steven Kane finished first in the third round of the Blancpain Endurance Series at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France, for the team’s second victory in a row. With the victory, Smith, Meyrick and Kane move in to the lead in the overall drivers’ championship standings ahead of the Series’ headline event at the 24 Hours of Spa at the end of July.

In the dusk light of the track at Le Castellet, Steven Kane powered his way to victory with a narrow lead of just 1.1 seconds after three hours of racing, in a race that demanded the very best from both the Continental GT3 and its trio of drivers. The fight for the win dominated the third and final hour-long stint of the race, with the gap between the #7 car and the ART McLaren of Parente, Demoustier and Lapierre varying between six seconds and less than one second.

A new ‘Flying Dutchman’ Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing) is the first driver to score two consecutive triple victories in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Following his clean sweep at Spa-Francorchamps, the 16-year-old Dutchman also won all three races at the 2.3 kilometres long Norisring in Nuremberg. “It’s obviously been a fantastic weekend for me - said Verstappen - with the perfect result. Three wins in three races – what more could you ask for? It’s great to win on the Norisring. The car is perfect, as is the engine. The whole package worked a treat, both in the wet and the dry conditions. We couldn’t have struck a better balance.”

PADDOCK MIX Katherine Legge to race in formula e British racer Katherine Legge has become the first female driver and the 11th in total to be confirmed to race in the new all-electric FIA Formula E Championship after signing for the newly rebranded Amlin Aguri Formula E team. The 33-year-old former Champ Car racer becomes the first of the team’s two drivers to be announced which has since changed its name from Super Aguri following a new sponsorship deal with leading independent insurance company Amlin. Legge joins previously confirmed drivers Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi at Audi Sport Abt, Sam Bird and Jaime Alguersuari at Virgin Racing, Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok at Mahindra Racing, Nick Heidfeld and Stéphane Sarrazin at Venturi, Franck Montagny at Andretti Autosport and Jarno Trulli at TrulliGP. Legge said: “For me this is a really exciting opportunity. The car is fantastic, it looks amazing and it will be very quick. Racing through the streets of the world’s leading cities will be an incredible experience and I think it’s a great chance to

bring racing to the people. We will be driving in their cities on their streets.” Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric race series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans, whilst accelerating the interest in electric vehicles and promoting sustainability. Competing entirely on city-centre circuits – with races in China, Malaysia, Uruguay, Argentina, US, Monaco, Germany and the UK – it uses cars capable of speeds in excess of 150mph (225kph). Its 10 teams feature some of the leading international names in motorsport including Alain Prost and Michael Andretti, along with high-profile environmental supporters including Sir Richard Branson. Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Katherine to the FIA Formula E Championship and also Amlin who have shown their commitment to sustainable mobility and to the FIA’s new all-electric race series. It’s fantastic to have our first female driver too and we very much hope she is the first of many to join the championship.”

KIA RACING SCORES DOUBLE VICTORY AT ROAD AMERICA Kia Racing’s doubleheader debut at Road America this weekend turned into a double victory as Nic Jönsson scored backtoback wins in rounds seven and eight of the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge season. Jönsson and Kia Racing teammate Mark Wilkins finished onetwo in round seven at the 4.048mile road course on Friday. The two wins catapulted Jönsson into the Grand Touring Sport (GTS) class Driver Championship lead with Wilkins second by just one point, and Kia reclaimed the lead in the GTS Manufacturer Championship, ahead of Ford, Porsche, Chevrolet, Nissan and Aston Martin. “When Kia first approached us about racing back in 2010, they said they wanted to change people’s perceptions about the brand and the performance and durability of their cars,” said Jönsson. “Well, I can’t think of a better way to showcase the quality of the U.S.built Kia Optima than to outrun some of the world’s best twice in the same weekend!” Qualifying for Friday’s race was cancelled due to heavy rain, so the starting grid was set by championship points coming into the weekend, which meant Wilkins started second and Jönsson fourth. Jönsson darted into the lead on the first lap, and Wilkins quickly tucked in behind him.

Wilkins posted the fastest lap of the race, and the two never looked back during the 50minute contest, scoring Kia’s first onetwo victory since 2012, the Korean brand’s first season in the PWC. Saturday’s starting grid was set by lap times from the previous day’s race, putting Wilkins on pole position with Jönsson alongside. As the green flag waved Jönsson again charged into the lead with Wilkins running a close second. Only a few laps later, however, a major incident involving a GTclass Ferrari and McLaren brought out a fullcourse yellow, freezing the running order. Both drivers were unhurt, but during the lengthy clean up, Wilkins’ car began suffering intermittent electrical issues. When the green flag waved again with just 10 minutes left, the Kia duo of Jönsson and Wilkins once again ran first and second, but Wilkins’ electrical gremlins slowed his progress and he would eventually settle for seventh. “It was a bit of a surprise to have such a promising race end without a podium finish, given how tough and reliable the Optimas have been for us, but to run at this level with a productionbased, fourdoor, frontwheeldrive sedan, means we’re really testing the limits of every component in the car,” said Wilkins. However, it just wasn’t meant to be. I feel incredibly sorry for the entire team, which once again did a sensational job. The cars were superbly prepared, but you also need that little bit of luck in the race – and we just didn’t have that.”

PIT sTOP Maxime Martin, BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS, after qualify: “We can be very happy with a place on the front row. The team did a good job and we are pleased with this result. However, you do not win a 24-hour race in qualifying. It does not make a big difference whether you start from the first, second or third row. It is far more important to consistently set fast lap times and avoid making any mistakes.”

ENDURANCE This year, the classic endurance race in the Eifel proved to be a true thriller. The ‘marathon’ had seen a turbulent beginning at a high pace with many incidents, and by the time the sun rose on Sunday, if not earlier, it had turned into a real sprint. In the early morning hours, the fans watched an amazing duel for the lead. With a tenthof-a-second gap Christian Mamerow in the #4 Audi was battling with the Mercedes of the Black Falcon team. Following position battles

across several laps, the Audi driver prevailed and, taking turns at the wheel with with his team-mates Christopher Haase, René Rast and Markus Winkelhock, gradually extended the squad’s lead in the final third of the race. But the team never had any time to relax, as five different marques were battling in the top six positions, with the top three teams running on the same lap for a long time. In the end, the driver quartet won with an advantage of 2m 59s.

PIT sTOP “A fantastic success in our home race,” beamed Phoenix Racing Team Principal Ernst Moser, after the squad’s fourth triumph in Eifel classic. “And I’m particularly proud of the fact that we prevailed against the arguably toughest competition in the history of this trace.” In the early morning hours, the battle forth lead reached its climax. At the end of lap 102, the Black-Falcon-Mercedes #1 und the Phoenix-Audi #4 crossed the line side by side. In the end, the supercar from Ingolstadt took the lead to afterwards extend it consistently. After the triumph at Le Mans, this was the second Audi win within a week. “We gave our very best to repeat last year’s success,” said Black Falcon driver Lance David Arnold, “But in the end we were pipped. It goes without saying that we are disappointed right now but I think that we may be happy with having finished runner-up, in the end.”

PIT sTOP Felix Baumgartner, in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, you immediately clinched a result in the top ten together with your team-mates. Compared to your preparation phase, did you go through an extremely intensive learning process this weekend? “These two things can’t be compared with each other at all. I drove three stints in the race and completed a total of 24 laps. The learning curve was huge. I learned a lot by watching the driving style of the pros and in the course of time I noticed that I was feeling increasingly sure. Lap by lap, I got a better feel for where I could cut in and where I couldn’t.” Were you relaxed about tackling the race or wasn’t it so easy for you to stay cool? “I was quite a bit more nervous than in the previous races because the value of the 24-hour race is higher. There was a lot more at stake. There were various critics who didn’t think I

was able to handle this challenge. That had been the same with Red Bull Stratos. But I kept telling myself that with a good team and solid preparation you can achieve almost anything.” When comparing this weekend with your participation in the previous races on the Nordschleife: What was the most difficult part about this 24-hour race? “The traffic on track – combined with the different times of day at which I was driving – that was a special challenge. I drove my first stint into the hours of dusk at night and had to look for new reference points, with all the fans and camp fires along the track. In the morning, when the sun rose, it wasn’t easy either, although I’d practiced this situation for many hours on the simulator. But reality does feel different. As a team, we mastered all the tasks. Driving the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring was a boyhood dream of mine. And now I fulfilled it with Audi.”

ENRICO’S NOTEBOOK www.enricozanarini.com

09 June 2014

T he w izar d of OZ Someone may have noticed that I skipped writing my blog after the Monaco GP. I was a little bored after the race and found little inspiration to mark my words. A part with my temporary state of mind, I was really happy for Nico‛s success and

I followed with interest the series of exchanges between the silver arrow‛s boys during and after the Monegasque week end. I thought the seemly unfriendly dispute would spice up the championship and for sure it did.

Before the Canadian race, a stream of web reports announced that a fiery challenge would eventually blow and the entire F.1 community split 50/50 guessing the winner of the Grand Prix, given the fact that he was to be a three pointed star driver. Then, puff.. the magic formula: Take a masterful drive by Ricciardo, add a little trouble for the Mercedes power units together with traffic for Vettel and brake failure for Perez and……there is your recipe for victory ! And good for young Daniel and his permanent smile, the man who has shown the world of Motor Sport that young guns mean business and that F.1 Teams should always take a chance and give the new generation a proper GO. I met Daniel during his first F.1 stint in HRT when he replaced Karthikeyan. I followed his progress, race after race, driving a horrible car to its limits. After what I‛d seen I knew he was “foreman material” and I told the world.

DTM COsT REDUCTION During its June meeting the DMSB’s (German Motor Racing Association) commission responsible for DTM, defined further cost-reduction measures for the series. The core factor is the freezing of the DTM vehicles’ homologation that came into force on 01st March, 2014, up to the end of the 2015 season. Also frozen was the extra homologation for individual components – mainly for the suspension area – that was carried out on 02nd June, 2014. In the case of a joint application of all the three manufacturers involved in DTM – Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz – DMSB may adapt the homologation-realisation deadlines. Within the scope of this arrangement, manufacturer

Mercedes-Benz will be offered the opportunity to enhance their car within the specifications of the existing technical regulations and contest a day of testing up to 25th September (right before the 9th round of the DTM season). The DTM Commission comprises the Motor Sport Directors of the three manufacturers involved in DTM – Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Audi), Jens Marquardt (BMW) and Toto Wolff (Mercedes-Benz) – Hans Werner Aufrecht, Chairman of DTM rights holder and promoter ITR e.V., DMSB Honorary President Hermann Tomczyk, DMSB President Hans-Joachim Stuck, DMSB steering-committee member Dr. Gerd Ennser and DMSB Secretary General Christian Schacht.

“Freezing the homologation of the DTM vehicles up to the end of the 2015 season represents an important step for reducing the costs,” said Hans Werner Aufrecht. “The fact that the commission also defined exceptions that allow enhancements in certain circumstances demonstrates that the three premium-car manufacturers involved truly live the DTM spirit.” “We met the wish of all the DTM manufacturers by defining clear regulations and deadlines for the homologation of the DTM vehicles while making sure that we keep the necessary flexibility,” explained DMSB President Hans-Joachim Stuck. “I’m convinced that it’s in the interest of DTM and even more so of the fans that all the manufacturers involved in the series are on a par with one another.” RGM

NAsCAR wHELEN EURO sERIEs Tours Speedway is pioneering a racing style radically dierent from what European drivers are used to: only left turns, the NASCAR way

CING IS GROWING R IN EUROPE

Oval racing is something usually strange for European drivers and even the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series usually turns both right and left during the season, but once a year, in early July, the city of Tours becomes a paradise for race fans when it hosts the only NASCAR oval race in Europe, NWES’s most coveted event.

NASCAR Oval Racing is growing popular in Europe The ambitious project to build a NASCAR short track in downtown Tours was launched in 2011 by Team FJ and Tours Evénements and in the last two years it was completed with four banked corners. Inclination in turns 1 and 2 is 10.5-degrees, while turns 3 and 4 have a 9 degrees banking. Overall length of the Tours Speedway is 650 meters, almost ½ mile. “It’s a very special track. It’s a great event, with lots of fun, a unique atmosphere and lots of people watching the race,” said Frederic Gabillon (Still Racing Chevrolet Camaro), who won both ELITE 1 races in 2013 and is aiming for a repeat on July 5 and 6. “We had a great car last year and I hope Mathias Lauda

to win again. The competition is very tough and restarts are crucial, especially if you are on the outside.” Tours Speedway’s four races take place in the contest of one of the biggest American-themed events in Europe: the American Tours Festival. More than 40,000 fans attend concerts, cars and custom bikes exhibitions, rodeos, line dance shows and of course the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series only oval races of the season. “Tours is unique because the whole city is deeply involved in the Festival and in the races and the fans are amazing. It is very interesting to race under full

NASCAR rules, with double file restarts, green-white-checkered finishes and spotters playing a big role,” said two-times champion Ander Vilarino (TFT-Banco Santander Chevrolet SS), who raced on all the versions of the track and underlines the contrast

between taking chances to win and keeping an eye on the standings. “It’s always difficult, because you have to stay focused on the championship and stay out of trouble until the end, but this time I definitely want to go for the win.”

In the grandstands cowboy hats mix with racing caps and the whole event is pretty special for drivers and teams too, both for those who already have experience on ovals and those who still have to make their first run turning only left.

“I’m very excited! Team FJ and NASCAR did a great job to design this unique track. It’s going to be a very special event,” said Anthony Kumpen (PK Carsport Chevrolet SS), who worked very hard on his preparation for the new chal-

NAsCAR OVAL RACING Is GROwING POPULAR IN EUROPE lenge. “We did a few days of test sessions at an oval in Holland and we learned a lot setup-wise and driving-wise. I also had some calls with experienced NASCAR drivers and engineers in the US.” Mathias Lauda (DF-1 Racing by B66 Chevrolet Camaro) can’t wait to make his oval debut in Tours and thinks that free practices are going be fundamental to adapt

to this new challenge: “It’s a whole new experience for me,” he said. “I have seen many NASCAR races on TV and oval racing cannot be compared to anything I’ve done before. The whole field is so close and I really look forward to it. For sure we will have to learn fast because there will be guys with more experience than us. We need to use the free practice time at best to be ready.”

Oval racing is also fascinating young drivers aiming for a career in NASCAR. Take for example Nicolò Rocca (CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS): his debut at the Tours Speedway saw him start from the front row and put on a strong performance that culminated in a splendid fifth place in the Saturday Race after countless overtakes. “At the beginning I didn’t know exactly what to expect, because oval racing requires a completely

different approach both in race management and on-track behaviour, but I think it suits me well and now I love it,” explained the Italian. “It’s a different world, with all those door-to-door battles and double file restarts. It takes a lot of respect between drivers to put race hard but clean. I can’t wait for the Tours Speedway weekend and I’d definitely like more oval racing in the calendar”. RGM

INTERVIEw

An interview with Markus Niemela

by Roberto Del Papa

Finland, land of rally-drivers, most of the best, ice dancers and acrobats in flight. They call them the ‘Flying Finns’, steering wheel and drift artists.

MARKUs NIEMELA Markus Niemela comes from Rauma and yes, he knows how to jump, but not those jumps made by car at the 1000 Lakes rally, rather those with the BMX IN lakes; and yes, he is a drift master, not those drifts made at 130km/h through the Nordic spruce, but those made with a kind of shopping cart in Oklahoma; and yes, he can also dance, but on the dry and hard dirt groud, making donuts on and on where mud becomes glory. And now as you can imagine, yes, he is in its personal way an artist of the steering wheel. The golden world of F1 knows how to be cruel. It is said that a closed door opens a bigger one and Markus from Rauma has transformed, reinvented himself, closed the drawer of dreams by writing an end to a chapter of his life to open another, immaculate book, on which he can impress forever a new and fascinating story, the one of the ‘Spinning Finn ‘. Markus, the first question is simple: which is the reason of your jump from formula cars to sprints? “I was pretty close to a deal in F1 in 2009 after winning the Champ Car Atlantic Championship but it all fell through mainly because of money and politics. I’m sure I’m not the only driver this has happened. Anyway after that I did quite a few days of testing in Mercedes DTM car but they ran one less car that season so I had no seat the-

re. I came back to race Atlantics in the USA for 2009 but I was out of motivation for anything else but F1 at that point and it felt like going to work every time we went to a race. After that season I didn’t know what to do next and by accident I was asked to test a sprint car and I loved it. There was so much new to learn and it was like starting racing all over again in a rawest form of it.” It was difficult to settle down in a world so different from the asphalt-track? “Yes. I had quite big ego first at but it soon was shattered cause I got beaten by everybody. I was pretty fast on my own when the track was good but racing in a group or on a rough track was really really different from what I was used to. Another big deal was to learn so many different driving styles that are needed in sprint cars. Track changes so much during the night from super tacky to very slick and bumpy and you need to be able to cope with all of them.” What are your expectations for this new career? “Although I’m doing this for my living, my main goal is not to make racing feel like work ever again. I’m hoping to win the championship this year and then decide after the season what I want to do next.”

MARKUS NIEMELA Are formulas, or at least road course races, a closed chapter? “Probably so. Yeah sometimes I do miss shifting gears and turning right! No but seriously maybe the high-tech nature of it

is something I miss. Everything is tuned to the smallest detail in the car and also in the driver and that’s something I liked quite a lot.”

At some point you tried the stockcar way in K&N Pro West. What happened then? “I did one race. I qualified 5th out of 30-something cars and in the race I was running 3rd after 120 laps but screwed up with my brake adjuster and spun out.” What does it mean to be one of the very few non-Americans to practice dirt racing? “There are australians and newzealanders sometimes (since they race sprint cars in those countries also) but no other europeans than myself. People are quite curious with me in general and I usually get a good kind of attention. The only couple of times after I have caused a crash I’ve got some pretty rough comments how this is an American sport and not mine. Anyway that was the heat of the moment so in general it is really fun being an european here.” Why weren’t you at the Chili Bowl this year? Don’t tell me that sponsor are needed here too… “Haha no I was kind of in between teams during Chili Bowl and my new team, JFM, had seats filled already by the time I decided to go with them. I wanna win the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series Championship. Now the season is half way through and I’m leading by 37 points so it’s looking pretty good. Of course anything can happen.”

Your hobbies are all equally adrenalinic: skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX… you just cannot stop! Tell us more about anphibio-kart also! “Yeah I used to do all kinds of things but have calmed down a bit over the last 2 years… I had quite a lot of injuries that have left their marks on my body and I’m getting kind of achy! It was 2 years ago when I had to spend a few days in a hospital that I decided sprint cars are dangerous enough and I shouldn’t add any risk by doing all these other things. I mean I still snowboard and ride bikes but I don’t quite push it as far as I used to. The water gokart was an attempt to cross the bay like they do on a snow mobile. I tried it 3 different times with different setups but ended up in the bottom every time. I think we have it down now so I’ll probably try again with slightly different tires when I have time.” RGM
