Jaguar F-Pace tested to extremes

TESTED TO

JAGUAR F-PACE EXHAUSTIVELY TESTED IN THE MOST DEMANDING LOCATIONS DURABILITY PROVEN AT EXTREMES OF HOT AND COLD: -40째C TO +50째C DYNAMICS AND PERFORMANCE OPTIMISED FOR ALL CONDITIONS GRAVELLED MOUNTAIN PASSES INCLUDED IN A JAGUAR TEST PROGRAMME FOR THE FIRST TIME

THE LIMIT

Tested to the Limit

From

the searing heat and dust of Dubai to the ice and snow of Northern Sweden, the new F-PACE has been tested to the limit in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth. Jaguar’s performance crossover offers an unrivalled blend of performance, design and practicality. To ensure that every system functions perfectly even under the most extreme conditions, the new F-PACE has been subjected to one of the most demanding test programmes the company has ever devised. “We developed the F-PACE to offer the ride, handling and refinement demanded from a Jaguar, together with exceptional levels of ability and composure on all surfaces and in all weathers.” Says Andrew Whyman, Vehicle Programme Director. “Just as we paid obsessive attention to detail over the engineering of every single component, we’ve exhaustively tested the F-PACE in the most challenging conditions to ensure that it will exceed the expectations of our customers around the world.” At Jaguar Land Rover’s test facility in Arjeplog, Northern Sweden, average winter temperatures rarely exceed -15°C and of-

ten plummet to -40°C. The 60km of purpose-built handling tracks, mountain climbs, inclines, split-friction straights and off-road areas are ideal for optimising the calibration of the all-wheel drive system and Dynamic Stability Control and technologies such as the All-Surface Progress Control. The work done here makes sure that, whether on asphalt, snow or ice, the F-PACE delivers the connected steering feel and agility fundamental to Jaguar dynamics DNA. In Dubai, ambient temperatures can exceed 50°C in the shade. When vehicles are left out in direct sunlight, cabin temperatures can soar to 70°C – exactly what’s needed to ensure that everything from climate control systems to infotainment touchscreens function perfectly in extremes of heat and humidity. And while the test engineers can relax in air-conditioned comfort as they drive in city traffic, this part of the test cycle is designed to place the cooling systems under very high load through a combination of high ambient temperatures and low airflow. Finally the F-PACE has also been driven over gravelled mountain passes. This is the first time that a Jaguar test programme has included this uniquely challenging environment.

Tested to the Limit

The world premiere of the Jaguar F-PACE will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and this innovative car will go on sale from 2016. The F-PACE is the latest aluminium-intensive Jaguar and will be manufactured in Solihull, UK.

Hyundai

Vision G Concept Coupe

H

yundai revealed the “Vision G” Concept Coupe at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The concept was described as Hyundai’s inspiration for its family of future premium products. The exterior styling of the concept is highlighted by a long hood, high-beltline and a cabin that presents a slingshotlike appearance. The heart of “Vision G” is the 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine producing 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 383 lb. ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm.

Jaguar XF

T

he all-new Jaguar XF’s dynamic, coupé-like design is formed around Jaguar’s aluminum-intensive architecture and combines the proportions, elegant surfaces and lines which define all Jaguar cars, with a longer wheelbase, more interior space and exceptionally low aerodynamic drag yet in a lower and shorter body than the car it replaces. It is 4,954mm long: at 2,960 the wheelbase is 51mm longer than before, the front overhang 66mm shorter. Though 7mm shorter and 3mm lower than the original

XF, rear seat space is class-leading. The new XF’s four- and six-cylinder Euro 6 diesel and petrol engines are characterised by a rapid build-up of torque from low speeds to give effortless acceleration. From the 104g/km 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel powering the rear wheels though a 6-speed manual transmission to the 380PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 driving its rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic, the allnew XF offers a truly remarkable breadth of performance and capability.

Kia

Sportage & Soul

PREVIEW

T

he all-new Sportage will make its global debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2015. The ‘face’ of the all-new Sportage represents the biggest change to the car’s design, with the car’s headlamps no longer integrated with the grille for the new model, instead sweeping back along the outer edges of the more sharply-detailed bonnet and bolder wheel arches. At the rear, the horizontal forms and surface volume emphasise the car’s width and give the compact SUV a more stable appearance.

T

he extremely popular Soul has a host of new style and convenience features. Three unique trim levels (Base, Plus, and Exclaim) remain, and each one adds new features for the 2016 model year: for example alloy wheels now come standard across all models. A new Designer Collection package brings new style with two visually striking two-toned color combinations. Power for the Base Soul is delivered by a gasoline direct injection (GDI) 130-horsepower (at 6,300 rpm) 1.6-liter all-aluminum DOHC four-cylinder engine. The GAMMA engine produces 118 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,850 rpm. The Plus and Exclaim models enjoy the more powerful 2.0-liter NU power plant with GDI technology. Power is rated at 164 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at a 4,000 rpm. The 1.6-liter engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or, optionally, to a six-speed automatic. The Plus and Exclaim models are available exclusively with the sixspeed automatic.

Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe

T

he expressive exterior design differs significantly from the MercedesBenz model, which shares merely the same doors, roof and boot lid. The powerful 8-cylinder engine, together with the increased track width on the front and rear axles, calls for a redesigned front end and a model-specific rear assembly as well as new side walls. The larger wheel arches allow the use of wider tyres (up to 255 millimetres on the front axle and up to 285 millimetres on the rear axle), contributing to improved lateral acceleration, traction and agility. The 4.0-litre 8-cylinder biturbo engine is already used in the C 63 Saloon and the C 63 Estate and is paired to the SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Toyota Land Cruiser

N

ew exterior and interior design features are the obvious changes made to the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser, while new safety technology, a major drivetrain upgrade and enhanced multimedia features go more in depth. The 381 horsepower 5.7-liter DOHC V8 engine features Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and produces 401 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm. Equally critical is that the engine produces 90-percent of peak torque at just 2,200 rpm, giving Land Cruiser a powerful response. For 2016, a new 8-speed automatic transmission replaces the 6-speed unit, with the added ratios allowing a wider ratio spread to help enhance acceleration and fuel efficiency.

T

he BMW Concept M4 GTS showcases new technologies which will debut in production vehicles later this year. The BMW Concept M4 GTS features the innovative water injection system that has provided a significant output and torque boost. In addition, the BMW Concept M4 GTS has rear lights with OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology for an unmistakable appearance. The dynamic and exclusive presence of the BMW Concept M4 GTS is accentuated by the exterior paint shade Frozen Dark Grey metallic, with the Acid Orange accent on

the front splitter creating an effective contrast. The lightweight, forged and polished light-alloy wheels in 666 M styling also feature an Acid Orange accent. In the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, the idea of centring attention on the driver begins with his immediate surroundings. This new approach led the designers first to the driver’s helmet, race suit and seat before moving onto the lines and surfaces of the interior. As the layer of interaction closest to the driver, the helmet visor assumes the functions of a display and projects situation-based information such as the car’s speed, gear engaged and engine revs into the driver’s direct field of view. At the same time, the seats ensure the driver’s body has the best possible connection with the car, giving him a physical feel for it with almost his whole body, in any situation, and thus allowing him to react faster and more effectively.

Renault’s new saloon packs style and real driving enjoyment

THE TALISMAN A lot of innovations combine to make the TALISMAN an executive saloon that will appeal not only thanks to its styling but also through a pleasurable experience for both drivers and passengers alike. The TALISMAN is built to the very highest quality standards and meticulous attention has been paid to every detail, including, notably, the depth and lustre of its paint.

STEFFEN JAHN/PRODIGIOUS/ARCHITECTE DE LA PHILARMONIE 1 : JEAN NOUVEL

Renault Talisman

Like

the new ESPACE, the TALISMAN is a concentrate of fundamentals, to which Renault has added sensuous styling, plus a carefully-appointed, comfortable and roomy interior. Featuring high-tech innovations (4Control chassis, active damping, Multi-Sense technology, R-Link2, Bose Surround Sound, etc.), the new TALISMAN is designed to enhance travelling comfort and pleasure for the driver and passengers alike. But Renault’s best must also be affordable, so the TALISMAN has been engineered to be among the most competitive models in its class with regard to ownership and running costs. For the TALISMAN, Renault designers opted for a three-box body style. To reinterpret the rulebook, Renault’s designers went back to basics to establish the ideal proportions and perfect balance between the different volumes. An overall length of 4.85 metres and a width of 1.87 metres endows the TALISMAN with a generous footprint that is beneficial to interior space and underscores the distinguished apperance expected of a car of this stature.

ULI HECKMANN/PRODIGIOUS

Renault’s designers and engineers worked closely together to keep the roof height to just 1.46 metres and to control ground clearance. They also achieved the ideal one-third / two-thirds ratio between the glazed areas and body panels, plus a 2.81 metres long wheelbase. The long bonnet adds dynamism to the TALISMAN’s profile, and the large diameter wheels (up to 19-inches) are a snug fit within their sculpted arches.

ANTHONY BERNIER/PRODIGIOUS

Capital outlay for the TALISMAN programme totalled €420 million which was invested in the Douai factory, notably to introduce hot-stamping technology, a new light tunnel for the paint shop and a new ‘War Room’ quality optimisation procedure. Renault Douai has developed a ‘premium’ inspection process which involves examining vehicles as they come off the line and carrying out final adjustments as necessary. Staff at Douai benefited from a specific training programme, which culminated in the awarding of a ‘high-end production’ certificate for those who attended. Over the last two years, they have received some 200,000 hours of training.

Renault Talisman

Renault selects names for its models that symbolise their design and personality across all markets where they are sold. True to this tradition, the TALISMAN has been given a charismatic name that conjures up notions of both protection and power. At the same time, TALISMAN is an easy word to pronounce and is understood the world over. This three-syllable name rolls easily and naturally off the tongue, yet it asserts the model’s powerful personality and the energy it radiates. The combination of the model’s strong, racy lines and innovative technologies express protection and safety.

ULI HECKMANN/PRODIGIOUS

Renault Talisman

The Renault TALISMAN offers a choice of ten body colours: - Nine metallic finishes: Pearlescent White, Dune Beige, Cosmos Blue, Vison Brown, Cassiopée Grey, Platine Grey, Etoilé Black, Carmin Red, Améthyste Black (Initiale Paris versions) - One non-metallic finish: Glacier White. All paint options feature a high-durability lacquer coat providing added lustre and a higher level of resistance. Five alloy wheel designs (depending on the market): 16-inch Sequence wheels, 17inch Bayadere wheels, 18-inch Erbé Grey diamond-effect Duetto wheels, 19-inch Erbé Grey diamond-effect Alizarine wheels and 19-inch black Initiale Paris diamond effect wheels.

Reinterpreting classical design cues to reflect the themes of the exterior styling, Renault’s designers conceived an interior that is welcoming and high in quality. Visually, the cabin is divided into three horizontal planes which serve to structure the space within the vehicle. The areas closest to the occupants feature an inviting, soft-to-the-touch trim. Elements that

are further away are deliberately treated in a ‘cooler’ manner in terms of colours and materials. This contrast contributes to the impression of space. Lastly, the combination of particular colours and a variety of different materials creates different interior ambiences. The TALISMAN has many strengths that support its bid to distil a unique impression of comfort and wellbeing thanks to its generously dimensioned, welcoming interior. The TALISMAN stands out among the best cars in its class in terms of cabin space and all-round stowage capacity. The TALISMAN was carefully thought through to ensure the wellbeing of the driver and occupants alike and its cabin is among the roomiest in its class, notably in three areas: • Front and rear headroom: the height from the seat cushion to the roof is 902mm at the front and 855mm at the rear. • Front elbow room. • Rear knee room: 262mm – amongst the very best in the TALISMAN’s segment. The wide centre console contributes further to this impression of space and width by positioning the front occupants at an appreciable distance from each other. The console itself is pleasant to the touch and carefully finished. With more than 25 litres of stowage space around the cabin, the TALISMAN figures among the very best in its class in this respect. When the key card holder approaches, the Daytime Running Lights, rear lights and the interior roof light come on, while

the door mirrors deploy and down lights illuminate the area around the door. When the driver opens the door, he or she is welcomed by an audible and visual animation on the display. Meanwhile, the seat automatically slides back 50mm (versions with electric seats) to facilitate ingress. Once the driver is seated, it returns to its original position. The TALISMAN comes with three types of multimedia equipment. The entry level TALISMAN is equipped with a car radio featuring a 4.2-inch (11cm) display. Depending on the market, this digital radio offers flawless reception and CD quality sound. The signal also carries information in text format, such as a description of what is playing, weather and traffic updates, latest news, etc. In the case of the intermediate equipment levels, the TALISMAN comes with the RLink 2 connected multimedia tablet, with a seven-inch (18cm) landscape format display and Bose Surround Sound. The high-end equipment level comes with R-Link 2 complete with an 8.7-inch (22cm) portrait format display. Through its R-Link Store, Renault offers a comprehensive catalogue of applications specifically developed for in-car use, including: Coyote® alerts, three Michelin applications (Hotels, Restaurants and Travel), fuel prices and the reading aloud of e-mails. The TALISMAN takes its occupants on a journey to the very heart of a music concert courtesy of its Bose® Surround Sound system. The quality is such that the driver and passengers are completely immer-

sed into an all-encompassing sound experience, hearing and appreciating every note and even every breath as if the artists themselves were on-board. Once again, Renault stands out for its innovative flair in mating the 4Control system to electronic damper control in a manner that has never been seen before in a family saloon. This unique combination is responsible for generating driving pleasure, comfort and safety. Around town, the 4Control chassis – a genuine Renault speciality – ensures that the TALISMAN’s size is quickly forgotten by endowing it with extraordinary agility. Out on the open road, the TALISMAN’s cornering stability and safety when evasive action is required place Renault’s new saloon in a class of its own. Like the new ESPACE, the TALISMAN is equipped with Multi-Sense technology. Its saloon car architecture enables it to extract even more of the benefits of this Renault innovation which make a real difference when it comes to driving enjoyment. MultiSense controls and co-ordinates the various technologies found in the TALISMAN to create an immersive driving experience. It is responsible for operating the 4Control system, active damping, steering, engine and EDC transmission. It also covers the instruments, engine sound and ambient lighting. Thanks to this ingenious system, the TALISMAN provides access to its occupants’ desired mood in the form of four pre-programmed settings: Comfort, Sport, Eco and Neutral, plus a fully configurable Perso mode. It is as if the driver is benefiting from several cars all rolled into one.

ANTHONY BERNIER/PRODIGIOUS

There are three interior trims and five equipment levels: • LIFE: black dashboard, leather-trimmed steering wheel and black fabric seats inspired by men’s tailoring. • ZEN: same ambience as the Life equipment level but with lighter-coloured trim strips. • BUSINESS: same ambience as the Zen equipment level but with additional equipment. • INTENS: combined fabric/ semi leather seats, or optional dark brown or black Riviera leather upholstery and matching dashboard. Chocolate brown top-stitching. • INITIALE PARIS: black or sand grey dashboard with dark charcoal or silver top-stitching, Nappa full-grain leather upholstery in a graded grey pattern or solid black, and Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel.

The TALISMAN is powered by efficient, high-performance small-displacement engines. The TALISMAN’s comprehensive range of engine options includes the Energy TCe 200 petrol unit and the Energy dCi 160 and Energy dCi 130 diesels that can also be specified for the new ESPACE. Boasting latest-generation technologies such as direct petrol injection and steel pistons, the TALISMAN’s engines offer both first-rate driving enjoyment and low fuel consumption. These downsized powerplants all bear the ‘Energy’ label through the fact that they incorporate either one or two turbochargers, Stop&Start technology and energy recovery under braking. The two petrol units and three diesel powerplants all comply with Euro6 emissions legislation and cover all the needs of European customers. Two petrol engines: The Energy TCe 150 and Energy TCe 200 units will be exclusively mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission. Three diesel engines: The Energy dCi 110 unit can be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or to a six-speed dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission. The Energy dCi 130 unit will similarly be available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch EDC transmission. As in the new ESPACE, the Energy dCi 160 unit – equipped with twin turbos – will be exclusively mated to a six-speed dualclutch EDC gearbox.

Audi pilots itself on US race track

ENJOY THE TRAFFIC Piloted driving at Audi is approaching production readiness at race pace. On one of the world’s most challenging race tracks, the Sonoma Raceway in California, the latest generation of the Audi RS 7 piloted driving concept has surpassed previous top performances once again. Audi will be offering piloted driving for the first time in the upcoming generation of the Audi A8

Enjoy the traffic

For

some time now, Audi has been testing piloted driving under increasingly challenging conditions. In October 2014, an RS 7 nicknamed “Bobby” already completed a driverless lap on the Hockenheimring at speeds up to 240 km/h(149.1 mph). The new generation of the car is named “Robby,” has a power output of 412 kW (560 hp) and is around 400 kg (881.8 lb) lighter than its predecessor. Whether braking, steering or accelerating, the piloted car controls all driving functions fully autonomously and with maximum precision. Audi is also testing piloted driving in the challenging situation of real road traffic. At the start of 2015, “Jack” – an Audi A7 piloted driving concept with many nearproduction solutions – drove on public highways from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Shortly thereafter, this car also drove autonomously on German autobahns at speeds up to 130 km/h (80.8 mph). At CES Asia in May 2015, journalists also had an opportunity to experience piloted driving – in the traffic of megacity Shanghai.

“In Sonoma, we took the Audi RS 7 piloted driving concept to its physical limits lap after lap, and it handled the task with uniform precision,” says Thomas Müller, who is responsible for the development of brake, steering and driver assistance systems at Audi. “The car turned in lap times that were better than those of sports car drivers.” The RS 7 took just 2:01.01 minutes to complete the 4,050-meter (2.5 mi) circuit. The development work, which includes driving on a very wide array of testing grounds, is yielding valuable knowledge for series-production systems – from the sensor technology and data processing to vehicle control and stabilization. The technologies for piloted driving stand for safety, time savings, efficiency and convenience. The systems can make a valuable contribution to safety, especially when the driver is overwhelmed or underwhelmed by driving tasks. In addition, it gives drivers greater freedom for organizing their time in the car. When used to temporarily assume driving tasks, the predictive technology makes driving more efficient, reduces stress and enhances comfort. Piloted driving will make its production debut in the next generation of the luxury-class sedan, the Audi A8. The systems can assume control of the car during parking or in stop-and-go traffic on freeways at speeds up to 60 km/h (37.3 mph).

In

yet another exciting journey, Tata Nano has proven its metal as Varun Vagish, an adventurist and car enthusiast from Asansol, West Bengal takes the Nano to the Base Camp of Siachen Glacier in Ladakh, the highest battlefield on Earth. This feat was accomplished with Tata Nano in 20 days covering 7,000 kms, in a journey which started from Asansol, West Bengal. This was achieved after climbing the World’s Highest Motorable Pass - Khardong La (18,380 feet) and several other passes like Chang La, Zozi La, Fotu La and Namik La. Mr.Vagish in his Tata Nano has traversed the most rugged terrains and erratic weather conditions in this journey. The Nano triumphed against all odds and emerged a winner at the end of this test of endurance and reliability. According to Mr. Varun Vagish, “Being a rear wheel drive car” - said Varun Vagish – “Tata Nano was a mobile powerhouse while climbing the steep inclines of the highest mountain passes. Lowest turning radius also helped me to easily manoeuvre the vehicle on sharp curves. It just took 30 minutes to climb the last 16 kilometres stretch from North-Pulu to Khardung-la, World’s Highest Motorable Pass. In the plains, it was driven more than 800 kms in a day at few instances. During the whole journey, I felt immense respect for the whole team of Tata Motors who conceptualised and shaped this beautiful vehicle.”

Highly-acclaimed V端hl 05 now selling in Mexico, the Middle-East, and available in the UK very soon

QUE VIVA

MEXICO!

Vühl 05

The

first production example of the VÜHL 05 lightweight supercar has been delivered to an arch Mexican enthusiast, who remarked at the recent VIP handover: “My supercar collection was simply not complete without an 05 - this car is serious fun and offers a uniquely raw driving experience!” Resplendent in all-carbon bodywork, it is the first of several VÜHLs destined for the Mexican roads this year. The street legal road/track car will soon be seen in the Middle-East too, as the company’s newlyappointed dealer for that area has ordered a number of 05s for sale in Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar, which will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2015.

First UK sales imminent The VÜHL 05 first hit the headlines at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was campaigned in the annual hillclimb by Mexican-born F1 ace Esteban Gutiérrez. The considerable interest this created in the UK and mainland Europe is finally close to being satisfied, as the first righthand drive example has passed its IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) test with flying colours, and will very shortly be put through its paces by the key UK media. The appointment of the first British dealership will be the final step on the road to sales on these shores, an announcement about which is now imminent. Said VÜHL Technical Director Iker Echeverria: “We are obviously extremely happy to have entered full-scale production with

Other interesting features and upgrade options include: carbon bucket seats with water-resistant Dinamica suede trim; exposed carbon bodywork panels; 330mm quick-release suede-covered steering wheel; electronic data acquisition dash; built-in HD camera; wide range of colours in matt and gloss finish; titanium bolt pack.

Vühl 05 our 05 model, and experienced the delight of our first customer. 2014 was a consolidation year for us, during which we concentrated on appointing dealers, obtaining homologation in various countries and taking orders from around the world. We are now ready to sell the car in earnest.” “It is naturally very rewarding” Echeverria added “To have a bank of orders for Mexico and the Middle-East, but we fully recognise the importance of the UK market and have therefore worked especially hard to ready the car for sale in this territory. This has included creating a special all-inclusive launch price of £59,995.”

40 percent of the 05’s components are sourced in the UK Born of motorsport heritage and weighing in at just 695kg, the VÜHL is powered by a mid-mounted 285bhp version of Ford’s award-winning 2.0-litre, DOHC turbocharged EcoBoost engine, which endows it with a highly competitive power-to-weight ratio of 400bhp per ton – sufficient for a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and top speed of over 150mph. Designed and built in Mexico, the 05 nevertheless has a truly international specification and 40 percent of its components are sourced from the UK.

The high-tech chassis comprises a three-section bonded tub constructed from aluminium extrusions and aluminium honeycomb - aerospace technology that provides the 05 with a remarkably high level of torsional rigidity for optimum handling. Bolted direct to the passenger cell is a chrome-moly steel subframe housing the engine and rear suspension. A three-stage forward crash structure and double layer sidewalls provide a matchless level of protection for the occupants. The standard body is made from GRP, but carbonfibre is an attractive option – it saves over 30kg in weight and the exposed parts can

be configured to taste. The sophisticated aero features include a flat underbody, front and lateral splitters, rear diffuser and rear spoiler.

In perfect weather conditions, nearly 200 classic cars entered this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, on the fairway of one of the most famous golf courses in the world. Created in 1950 to demonstrate the virtues of the latest cars, this meeting has become a jewel in the crown of historic vehicle restoration and conservation

The

quality of the entrants, many of them priceless, was very high. Such a large number of very rare and immaculate classics, presents a challenge to the many judges. The vehicles are judged based on technical value, style and elegance, with the aim of encouraging the preservation of our mechanical heritage. This yearly meeting of people passionate about automotive design, style and innovation pays homage to the great eras of motoring history. This year the “Best of Show was a rare Isotta Fraschinio Tipo 8A manufactured in

Milan in 1924. The owner, Jim Patterson of Louisville, Kentucky, acquired the car at Retromobile, Paris in early 2014. Since then the very impressive car was subject to a comprehensive restoration programme, involving every nut and bolt and the result clearly convinced the judges. Concours Chairman Sandra Button said the win by the Isotta Fraschini wasn’t a surprise given its provenance: “From the moment that Cesare Isotta and the Fraschini brothers founded their company, they were known for building prestigious cars. And this particular car is very stylish and very powerful. Even when resting on

the ramp, it seems to be in motion, and it is filled with emotion. There is a lot of passion in this car.” The event also raised over $1.8 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, these charitable funds will benefit 100 local charities. It is very hard to choose which cars to include in our pages. We tried our best to pick our favorites, and don’t forget to have a look at the classic racing cars that also gathered in California as part of the Monterey Classic Car Week! FORMULA ONE

WELCOME BACK!

Despite the fact that the Team is now affected by major financial troubles (and rumors from the paddock are saying that Renault is ready to take over the entire operation…) Lotus is still one of the Formula One Brands with more appeal and is able to collect a huge multitude of loyal fans. Lotus F1 Team returned to the Formula 1 Grand Prix podium for the first time since the US Grand Prix in 2013 thanks to a superb drive from Romain Grosjean in the August 23 Belgian Grand Prix. Despite a five-place grid penalty, Romain delivered an exceptionally measured performance including setting the race fastest lap. Romain’s joy was tempered by a second lap retirement for Pastor Maldonado after his car lost drive. Romain’s result means Lotus F1 Team’s return to fifth position in the Constructors’ Championship.

WELCOME BACK!

PIT STOP Romain Grosjean: “This result is wonderful. It’s good for the team and for myself of course. Yesterday’s good qualifying result put a smile on my face but today was an unbelievable race. Everything came together when it mattered during those 43 laps. I drove with my heart today and pushed 100 % throughout the race. I did some great overtaking manoeuvers and was really pushing to catch up and hopefully overtake Sebastian Vettel – of course it was bad luck for him to have had the tyre issue at the end. We were really trying to go for the podium this afternoon and I felt very emotional during the last lap of the race! It’s a great feeling today.”

WELCOME BACK!

PIT STOP Pastor Maldonado: “We had been doing a great job this Belgian weekend, especially in qualikying. The car was feeling very good, very competitive and I had a good race start. We had an issue with the drive of the car which the team are investigating. I’m disappointed about the issue we had today but that’s racing sometimes. We are keeping focussed for the next race now and Romain has shown what is possible.”

WELCOME BACK!

PIT STOP Federico Gastaldi, Deputy Team Principal: “What an amazing job from Romain in Spa and we all thank all the hard work of everyone at Enstone and here at the circuit in Belgium. It’s no secret that it’s been a tough season for us in some ways, but we certainly know how to pick our moments to bounce back. Our joy for Romain and the team is a little bittersweet because of the retirement for Pastor, who started his race ahead of Romain so could have finished equally strongly.”

WELCOME BACK!

PIT STOP Nick Chester, Technical Director: “That was quite a race from Romain and the team! We were buoyed after yesterday’s P4 qualifying performance then today he drove a fantastic measured race. He drove brilliantly and made all the correct decisions with some fabulous overtaking. He looked after the tyres when he needed to and pushed when he needed to. It was the perfect race from him. We haven’t looked at everything on Pastor’s car yet but we know there was a big excursion over the kerbs which appears to have caused some damage to the power box so a big shame as he should also have achieved a strong result in Spa.”

Infiniti gives one U.S. engineering student the Formula One career opportunity of a lifetime

THE OPPO

Infiniti has announced that an engineering student from the University of Illinois is one of five global winners of the 2015 Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy (IPEA). For one year, Infiniti will provide 22-year-old Alex Allmandinger with the opportunity to work in Formula One with the Infiniti Red Bull Racing team

ORTUNITY

THE OPPORTUNITY

After beating 11 other finalists from around the country in an intense shootout event, Allmandinger will move to Infiniti Red Bull Racing headquarters in the UK in September to begin a 12-month placement working with the four-time Formula One World Championship Infiniti Red Bull Racing team, as well as with Infiniti. Allmandinger will spend eight months working on Vehicle Design at the team’s headquarters in Milton Keynes, UK – and four months working at Infiniti’s European Technical Center in Cranfield – on road car development projects. Formula One technology is more relevant to the automotive industry than ever and will play a key role in the ongoing transfer of technical knowledge and expertise between the race team and Infiniti. The IPEA, now in its second year, is a one-of-akind global search for the world’s best up-andcoming engineers. For 2015, five placements were made available with one winner chosen each

from Russia, Western Europe, China, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. to work in roles spanning vehicle dynamics, vehicle design, aerodynamics and electronics. “It still hasn’t sunk in, but I am incredibly excited about joining the Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy,” said Allmandnger. “It really is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to get started. It will be the best 12-month learning experience of my life.” Thousands of students registered their interest in this year’s program, and after a series of interviews, 10 finalists in each region were se-

lected to attend a regional final event where they were put through their paces in a structured assessment by a panel of judges from Infiniti and Infiniti Red Bull Racing. “The caliber of entrants this year was very high, which made for a tough selection process,” said Tommaso Volpe, global director, Infiniti Formula One. “If last year’s winners are anything to go by, it will not be long before all of them are making a significant contribution both to us and to the race team. With F1 becoming more and more relevant to the automotive industry – and an increased focus of the placements this year being on the road car development – we are training a new generation of engineers who will play a key role in the crossover between the two industries.”

Thousands of spectators lined the east and west sides of Woodward Avenue on a late Thursday afternoon - smart phones at attention for snapping photos - as pace cars representing Team Penske’s record 16 Indianapolis 500 victories formed a uniform line. With seven Indianapolis 500 winners included in the collection of current and former Team Penske Indy car and stock car drivers behind the wheels, the sun-splashed parade on the opening day of the Woodward Dream Cruise was a quick-moving and burnout-turning 20mile procession. “This is like a family reunion,” said Al Unser, who joined another four-time Indy 500 winner, Rick Mears, along with his brother Bobby and

son Al Jr. - who combined for another five Indy 500 triumphs - in the salute to speed. “And I’m not talking about just the Unser family, but I consider this the Penske family.” From team owner Roger Penske taking the pole position in the 1972 442 Hurst Oldsmobile convertible that commemorates the team’s first Indy 500 win with driver Mark Donohue to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that paced the field for Team Penske’s most recent win at “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” with Juan Pablo Montoya in May, the first-ever unification of all the cars and the star-studded lineup of drivers was a unique tribute to the historic race and annual Metro Detroit summer event.

Also along for the ride were three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, 2006 winner Sam Hornish Jr. and ‘03 winner Gil de Ferran, first-year Verizon IndyCar Series team member Simon Pagenaud, NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace and current Team Penske NASCAR drivers Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney. “Each one of these cars has a special place in Team Penske history, along with each of these men that have meant so much to our organization,” Penske said. “To have the drivers in the pace car that they won the Indy 500 with is pretty special and I’m thankful that everyone could make it. The Indianapolis 500 is such a unique event and it is an honor to be able to share these wonderful cars from our victories at Indianapolis, and the great stories that go along with them.”

Many stories were being swapped pre- and post-cruise between the drivers about their favorite 500 Mile Race memories and the importance of the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race next May. Penske will mark 50 years in auto racing in 2016. “When you drive for Team Penske, there is a lot of cool stuff you get to do,” said Pagenaud, who drove the 2002 50th anniversary Chevrolet Corvette C5 on Woodward Avenue. “All these years, all these wins, all these backgrounds are all together. It makes you realize that you’re part of something really special. To have 16 wins in the Indy 500 is just incredible to even say that number. I’m not a big number guy, but obviously with a team like this with such history, you do think about it. It

would be the biggest achievement in my career to win the 100th Indy 500.” In its 20th year, the Woodward Dream Cruise rekindles the years when the thoroughfare that connects the northeast suburbs to downtown Detroit was a hub for weekend cruisers. On Aug. 15, more than 1.5 million people again raised their smart phones to snap a sampling of the 40,000 vehicles from around the globe taking part in the parade. “The Woodward Dream Cruise is a great event for the City of Detroit,” Penske said. “You don’t need an entry blank, you don’t need to go through inspection. All you have to do is bring your car and go have fun.”

For four days, 550 cars were heard screaming through the California desert, another unmissable moment of the Monterey Classic Car Week. The race day at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was another

action-packed hot day for the many thousands of classic race car fans. A rich mix of racing cars from all eras including pre 1940s up to IMSA GTP & GTO classes from 1981 to 1991, were competing. TOURING CARS

BTCC:

Rob Collard, Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal took a victory apiece during an unforgettable day of Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship racing at Knockhill on 23 August. A number of title protagonists experienced highs and lows, leaving the championship race tantalisingly poised with three events remaining

West Surrey Racing’s Andy Priaulx scored his second pole position of the season by setting a qualifying lap record on Saturday, but it would be his team-mate Collard that scooped victory in the opening race. Priaulx blasted his BMW 125i M Sport off the line and into the lead, but he immediately had the Ford Focus of Mat Jackson on his tail. Guernseyman Priaulx succumbed to Jackson’s attack before the end of the first tour while stablemates Collard and Sam Tordoff’s went side-by-side for third.

BTCC: WHAT A FIGHT! In the last part of the race Priaulx attacked Jackson for the lead on the exit of the hairpin but a robust defence from the Motorbase Performance driver forced the triple world champion wide, allowing Collard to inherit second. Collard tried the same move on Jackson shortly after and he was able to slide his 1-Series down the inside of the white #4 machine. Jackson again tried to defend but this time he was helpless in his attempt to prevent the WSR man from taking the lead. Jackson and Priaulx elbowed their way to the finish but the rostrum order remained the same, with Tordoff close behind in fourth.  Shedden brought the house down in race two as thousands upon thousands of partisan fans roared their man home to victory. The Scotsman hounded the faststarting Ford Focus of Jackson during the opening exchanges before pulling off a surprise manoeuvre at Clark’s on lap five.

It was the sort of brilliant move synonymous with Shedden’s attacking driving style and the 2012 champion never looked back, cruising to an unassailable lead in the process. Jackson clung on to second position for 25 laps before he was shuffled back by race one winner Collard, again showing the BMW 1-Series’ ability to maintain its pace until the finish of a gruelling contest. Collard’s result was all the more impressive considering he started from fourth on the grid and had maximum success ballast on board his WSR machine. If Shedden’s move for victory in race two was impressive then it was arguably bettered by his Honda team-mate Matt Neal in a thrilling finale at the 1.27-mile Fife circuit. The Civic Type R racer kept his powder dry for 24-laps before dive-bombing past racelong leader Adam Morgan on the penultimate lap. The Mercedes duo of Morgan and Aiden Moffat made a stellar formation getaway from the front row and stormed into a comfortable one-two in the early laps. Neal had to fend off the attention from old rival Jason Plato during the opening squabbles for

position before the VW began to fall back. As Neal hauled his Honda towards the three-pointed-star machines ahead of him, Plato was falling into the clutches of the chasing pack. The Audi of Rob Austin initially headed a gaggle of contenders behind them while the BMWs of Priaulx and Tordoff were busy scything their way through the order. Young gun Tordoff passed race two winner Shedden before making an eye-catching double move around the outside of both Jackson and the MG of Andrew Jordan. It all

PIT STOP “It was a brilliant feeling to get onto the top step of the podium in Scotland” – said Gordon Shedden – “The Honda Civic Type R is awesome around here, and on a fantastic sunny day at Knockhill I’m so happy to have got a win. We scored good team points, good manufacturer points and it’s exactly what we needed. I did a good job in qualifying with maximum ballast, and we made the best of it in race one before the car really came alive in the next one – it was one of those races where everything was just working great. To be fair the car was awesome in race three as well, I just got stuck in the pack a little. All the good work from earlier in the weekend could have been undone with a non-score in race three, so it was important to bring the car home. Overall it’s been a special day – the crowd has been absolutely amazing, there wasn’t a single gap in the line of fans all the way around the circuit and it’s been one of those weekends that has been proper top draw.”

BTCC: WHAT A FIGHT!

BTCC: WHAT A FIGHT! came to nothing for Tordoff, however, after contact with Austin sent him spiralling out of the race. Priaulx had already seen off Austin’s Audi before fighting with Team BMR RCIB Insurance racer Plato for fourth. A nudge across the line was followed by another slight tap on the next tour, which allowed both Priaulx and Austin to get by the double BTCC champion. Priaulx then tried several attempts to make a move into third having closed down Moffat’s Mercedes at a rate of knots. Staunch defending from youngster Moffat led to a bump on the exit of the hairpin before Priaulx nudged his way past on the penultimate lap. Priaulx’s podium joy was short lived, however, as the clerk of the course issued him with a 3.5 second post-race time penalty for the incident. The decision marked a significant turnaround for Laser Tools Racing’s Moffat who was taken to hospital with concussion following an accident at Snetterton two weeks

ago. Having been cleared to race this weekend by the BTCC Medical Team it was a fitting effort from the Scotsman as he went on to score a very popular home rostrum – his first ever in the BTCC. Back to the race itself and all eyes were on the lead battle, which would eventually be resolved in spectacular fashion. Following a safety car period Morgan’s Mercedes haemorrhaged time to Neal’s chasing Honda in the latter stages of the race. An unfortunate moment was to follow for Morgan as his WIX Racing A-Class collected debris that had fallen from a backmarker. With Morgan’s car now unsettled, Neal eyed his opportunity, before making an absolutely banzai move down the inside at the hairpin. Morgan kept him honest for the final tour but his fate was sealed as Neal fired across the line to take another memorable victory.

Despite his relatively lowkey weekend by his very high standards, Jason Plato still tops the standings by 11 points from Gordon Shedden, with Matt Neal just behind in third. Colin Turkington, Andrew Jordan, Andy Priaulx and Sam Tordoff all remain in the mix with just over 40 points blanketing the top seven drivers. Honda lead the Manufacturers/ Constructors table while Team BMR currently hold a treble top in the respective Teams’ and Independents’ orders. The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship now moves on to Rockingham in Northamptonshire in two weeks’ time.

BTCC: WHAT A FIGHT!

PIT STOP “ The BMW was really flying today.” Said Rob Collard. “ It’s a credit to the guys, after the weekend we had at Snetterton – they’ve been working so hard on the car and we’ve got some brilliant results. The BTCC is always tough, and it was a hard fight for the win and the podium today with the likes of Mat Jackson and Andy Priaulx. To grab another win at Knockhill is brilliant, there’s something in the air here and it’s a privilege to race around such a great circuit.”

World skiing champion versus rally ace

UNDER PRESSURE Burning rubber and jumping over road gaps in the southwest of Norway. This is what happens when Aksel Lund Svindal, the Downhill Gold Medalist, meets Andreas Mikkelsen, one of the best rally driver

Daniel Tengs/Red Bull Content Pool

UNDER PRESSURE A ferry that waits for nobody, breath-taking fjord scenery in Norway and a unique race. That is what you get when skier Aksel Lund Svindal met rally-driver Andreas Mikkelsen for a manto-man battle in early June at the world famous Lyseveien, in the southwest of Norway. The two Norwegian athletes gathered there for an unusual challenge and to catch the ferry to go back home: Mikkelsen chasing Svindal to get the maximum out of his mountain freeskiing, while Mikkelsen navigates a narrow path through snow banks up to eight meters high – both always under time pressure. Svindal’s first road gap jump over a car “The fjord, the steep mountains, the towering snow banks and the winding road; it’s a dream come true to drive here”, says an excited Andreas Mikkelsen. While the two athletes raced down the mountain Svindal landed his first ever road gap with Mikkelsen’s Volkswagen Polo R WRC passing underneath. “It required planning, speed and precision to time the jump - especially with Andreas driving underneath at 100 km/h”, explains Svindal. As the lack of snow further down the valley made it impossible to continue on skis, Mikkelsen offered Svindal to be his co-driver for the remainder of the road till the ferry quay, which has 27 hairpin curves. It turned out to be an unforgettable trip, where the two athletes hugged safety barriers and engaged the handbrake in such an eager manner that you could smell the burning rubber.

UNDER PRESSURE

PIT STOP Lyseveien opened in 1984, covering Lysebotn to Sirdal, in the southwest of Norway. The 29 km (18 miles) long road consists of 27 hairpin curves and reaches a highest point of 932 m (3057 ft.) above sea level.

UNDER PRESSURE Passion for skis and cars In the 1.1 km long Lysetunnelen – a steep 340° tunnel at the bottom of the road – the guys reached a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph). This speed was upheld in the last stretch towards the ferry quay, ending the drive in style with an unforgettable ferry entrance, followed by a 180° drift on the deck. It was an elated Svindal who came out of the car. “Experiences like these are priceless! I hope I get to attend something similar at some point,” says the 32-year old with a smile. Mikkelsen was impressed by Svindal’s codriver-skills, and how he pointed out blunders he believed the experienced rally driver made during the wicked run. “Aksel quickly understood how this works, and noticed the important details, like when the car lost grip for hundredths of a second. Aksel really is a multitalent”, declared the 26-year old, who himself was part of the Norwegian Junior National Team in Alpine skiing. Equally, Svindal has a great passion for cars: “Whenever I have a long day and need to relax, I can spend hours browsing for cars online before I go to sleep”, says Svindal, before continuing “I must admit that I envy Andreas a bit that he drives rally.” In response as to whether Svindal could be Mikkelsen’s next codriver, the rally driver answers with a huge grin: “I would love to have Aksel as my co-pilot … but he would need to lose a little bit of bulk.”

WRC: one-two-three for Volkswagen A one-two-three on home soil in front of over 225,000 spectators: Volkswagen duo Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia became the pair to win the Rally Germany in a German car in the modern WRC era. The Wolfsburg-based manufacturer also finished second and third with Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (+23.0 seconds) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (+1:56.6 minutes). Latvala also won the closing Power Stage to pick up three bonus points. Ogier continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship with 207 points, followed by Latvala (114) and Mikkelsen (98) as Volkswagen tops the Manufacturers Championship with 300 points.

With a maximum 112 points still up for grabs in the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ championships, one thing is now certain: only a Volkswagen duo can be crowned 2015 world rally champions. After securing the 30th victory of their careers, Ogier/Ingrassia now have a realistic chance of wrapping up their third title in a row with the Polo R WRC at the Rally Australia (10 to 13 September), while Volkswagen could also win the Manufacturers Championship Down Under.

HONDA RETURN TO OFF ROAD RACES

The sttart of the Vento Cup India

2010 Volkswagen Polo Cup India champion came home ahead of Anindith Reddy (IND) and Singh. Reddy, who had started from second on the grid, lost two positions on the opening lap. However, he was able to fight his way back into second place over the course of the race. The youngster did manage to reel in Bolisetti, but was unable to launch an attack on the lead. Race two was started in reverse order and proved to be an action-packed affair. Singh, who started the race from sixth place, fought his way into the lead and held on to triumph ahead of Reddy and Sahil Gahuri (IND). Race one winner Bolisetti started from eighth place and eventually came home sixth.

Honda will make its 4-wheel off-road factory racing return this November in the SCORE Baja 1000 desert race, with an unlimited off-road race vehicle powered by Honda Performance Development, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Company, Inc. The manufacturer teased images of its race vehicle today, featuring a twin-turbocharged Honda HR35TT V6 engine, Albins ST6 sequential transmission, Fox racing shocks, and rugged General Grabber tires. More information will be available in the days leading up to the Baja 1000 event in November.

DS VIRGIN RACING NEW LIVERY

Ahead of the first race of the second FIA Formula E season, the DS Virgin Racing team has unveiled a new livery design that drivers Sam Bird and Jean-Eric Vergne will showcase for the first time at the final pre-season testing dates on 24 and 25 August 2015 at Donington Park. Combining DS and Virgin brand identities, the new design represents a dynamic integration of both the DS Automobiles and Virgin colour schemes. Maintaining the distinctive red and chrome features from season one, the DS brand logo now appears proudly on each side of the car on a black background, whilst the battery cover will remain purple as in season one. Carrying on from the inaugural season of

Formula E, both Sam Bird and Jean-Eric Vergne’s cars will be named after Holly and Bellie Branson, featuring the ‘flying lady’ graphic as traditionally used across Virgin’s technological projects. Speaking about the new design, Sam Bird said; “Last season we had the best car on the grid visually and so to have another great livery design for season two is brilliant. Formula E cars look fantastic as a basic starting point, but I feel that we have again taken it to another level with this season’s livery. I cannot wait to get on track in Beijing for the first race of the season and show off the new design to all of those people onsite and watching on TV.”
