Jaguar C-X 75

My name is Bond...

Two iconic British sport car brands are together on stage with James Bond! Aston Martin lends its name to the English spy since the 60” debut and today is launching the DB9 GT Bond Edition a limited edition to celebrate over 50 years of Aston Martin and James Bond. The new “coming soon” film, Spectre, sees Bond behind the wheel of the DB10. On the other side Jaguar (together with Rang Rover and Land Rover) claims now space too in Spectre, the movie due to be launched worldwide in November

Nissan Gripz Concept

Crossover

pioneer Nissan has revealed a new concept car which points to an innovative new future for the marque. Conceived by designers in Europe and Japan, the Nissan Gripz Concept blends the ability and practicality of a compact crossover with the excitement and performance of a sports car. Infused with an exciting and adventurous feel, thanks to its radical design and advanced powertrain concept - the Nissan Gripz Concept is Nissan’s next move as a game changer, and is a glimpse of how a future compact crossover from the pioneer of the segment might look. The Nissan Gripz Concept is designed as a car with a dual personality; a vehicle that can handle the day-to-day commute and deliver a genuine adventure at the weekend. In the same way a cyclist will use a bike to get to work and then head out on that same machine for an adrenaline fuelled ride when the working day is over, so too can the driver of the Nissan Gripz Concept tackle the city streets during the week before enjoying a drive over a mountain pass on a day off.

Nissan Gripz Concept TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Dimensions (mm) Length Width Height Wheelbase

4,100 1,890 1,500 2,580

Although maintaining a similar footprint to a compact crossover, the Nissan Gripz Concept has the silhouette of a sports car with a raised ride height, equipped to conquer more challenging driving conditions. The Nissan Gripz Concept is equipped with an EV technology based Series hybrid system ‘Pure Drive’ e-Power. An efficient petrol engine is used to power the electric motor found in the Nissan LEAF. This configuration generates outputs of 80kW and 254Nm. This configuration delivers smooth, swift and linear acceleration in near-silence,

with supreme efficiency. As a result, the Nissan Gripz Concept offers a smooth, refined and exhilarating driving experience with outstanding fuel efficiency. The Nissan Gripz Concept is seen as a design statement rather than a replacement for an existing model, although it does feature cues from Nissan’s new ‘emotional geometry’ design language. The Crossover concept incorporates four key design elements first seen in Europe on the Nissan Sway, one of the stars of the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. As with Sway, Gripz features a V-motion grille, boomerang lamps front and rear, a floating roof and a kicked-up C pillar. Taking the high-tech simplicity - two apparent contradictions - of a racing bicycle as inspiration, the concept features a carbon frame over which expressive body panels are placed, like armoured cladding. Exposed carbon elements spear through the design, accentuating features such as the boomerang-shape given to the leading edge of the front door structure. Gripz has four doors - with deep dihedral front doors that swing out and up when opened, and a pair of rear-hinged half-doors behind. There is no B-pillar, allowing easy access to the 2+2 interior. The front end is dominated by Nissan’s V-motion grille, mounted low and framed by rectangular lamps housing high and low beams. Embedded in the lamps are forwardfacing cameras that record every journey, just as a helmet-cam is used by cyclists. Using a live feed, adventures through great roads can be beamed around the world, allowing for friends to follow the car’s pro-

gress on their computer, tablet or smart phone in real time. More matt-black can be found on the extended wheel arches, the pinched and indented triangular sill - raised to increase ground clearance - and the A-pillar leading to the floating roof. The roof features a central glazed panel with bullet grey-coloured composite panels on either side over the seating areas. These reduce in width as they flow towards the rear of the car and blend into the rear lamps, which mirror the boomerang shape of the front running lights and wrap themselves around the rear three quarters of the car. At the rear, a dramatic truncated mattblack Kamm tail gives the concept a ‘codatronca’ effect while beneath the tailgate sits a pair of chromed trapezoidal exhaust pipes. The three-spoke 22-inch wheels are also inspired by racing bicycles - lightweight yet strong wearing comparatively thin highpressure tyres, especially constructed for the concept by Bridgestone. Red and white graphics found on the sidewalls are replicated on the car’s steering wheel. The seats and centre console are directly inspired by bicycles, as are the door pulls that are shaped like saddles from a racing bike. The three-spoke steering wheel, meanwhile, replicates the car’s road wheels, right down to the special graphics found on the tyre sidewalls. Like the Nissan Sway Concept and recent production cars, the Nissan Gripz Concept has a ‘Gliding Wing’ instrument panel. This elegantly thin design combines strength with simplicity and perfectly echoes the ethos of the concept.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with push-button shift and SelectShift®. Front-wheel drive is standard, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive optional. Safer and more effortless ride Available semi-autonomous features include the first Lincoln implementation of technology that may help avoid or lessen the severity of some frontal crashes - PreCollision Assist with Pedestrian Detection

Revel’s acclaimed performance is born from a philosophy that embraces science and technology as a means to advance the state of the art in an authentic and natural way. It dictates that frequencies are reproduced accurately as designed by physics and unaided by electronics. This approach — elegant in its simplicity — ensures the brand trademark sound signature, one that is pure, musical and faithful to the original performance in every Revel system. A 13-speaker Revel system designed for the ultimate audio quality experience is available on the all-new Lincoln MKX Select and Reserve.

New Lincoln MKX

activates at speeds above 3 mph. If no corrective action is taken and the system detects a collision is imminent, the brakes are automatically applied. Further, the all-new Lincoln MKX earned a 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Available adaptive steering adjusts the ratio between a driver’s steering input and the steering angle of the front wheels. In traditional steering systems, this is a fixed steering ratio. With this new solution, the steering ratio continually changes with vehicle speed, optimizing steering response in all situations. Standard electric power-assisted steering adjusts steering feel by matching the driver’s requested Lincoln Drive Control mode. At lower speeds, EPAS provides additional boost for effortless maneuverability. At higher speeds, EPAS increases steering effort and feedback, giving the driver a more precise steering feel. Together, EPAS and adaptive steering help provide an outstanding driving experience: EPAS reduces effort while adaptive steering reduces the amount the wheel needs to be turned. There is a new Auto Hold feature, which relieves the driver from having to press the brake pedal continuously to keep the vehicle stationary in traffic. Auto Hold releases the brakes when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Lincoln Drive Control, a suite of rideenhancing technologies that customize the driving experience and optimize performance, orchestrates available continuously controlled damping, electric power-assisted steering and active noise control. Drivers can select among normal, sport and comfort modes. Active noise control enhances overall

sound quality by cancelling unwanted noises, resulting in a comfortable cabin and a better environment for music listening and in-car telephone conversation. Also available to seamlessly assist the driver are: • Adaptive cruise control uses sensors to detect when traffic in front of the vehicle slows. The vehicle automatically slows down, and resumes cruising speed when the sensors detect traffic has cleared • Lane-Keeping System includes LaneKeeping Alert and Lane-Keeping Aid. With Lane Keeping Alert, the steering wheel vibrates when drivers are straying from their lane. Lane-Keeping Aid provides a mild steering input to encourage drivers to steer toward the center of the lane • Blind Spot Information System, or BLIS, signals the driver when a vehicle enters one of its blind spots by displaying an indicator in the sideview mirror • Cross-traffic alert detects traffic approaching from either side as the vehicle backs out of a parking space and warns the driver when another vehicle is present with a visual alert and audible tone. Additionally, the available hands-free power liftgate can be opened by kicking your foot under the rear bumper when you have the access key. The liftgate can be closed the same way or by pushing a button, and the height can be adjusted. 360-degree camera with enhanced park assist The available features and technologies have been orchestrated to provide a seamless experience. The front camera, for example, sits behind the Lincoln Star badge. When in Drive, Park or Neutral and the button is pushed, the Lincoln Star badge

moves out about 1 inch and tilts up to deploy the available front camera. The camera system also offers a 180-degree split view, which can be helpful in looking out in cross-traffic situations. The 360-degree view shows up to 7 feet all around the vehicle, helping to make parking easier. The 12-sensor ultrasonic system enables the full range of available parking-assist features: front rear side sensing, perpendicular and parallel parking and park out. Elegant design and two new Black Label themes Proud, wide shoulders, dynamic side undercuts and belt lines, and clever touches such as the integrated antenna underscore a sophisticated and powerful appearance. The available full-LED front headlamps are subtly executed as blades, rather than projectors, aligned with the horizontal execution of the Lincoln split-wing grille. A “powerdome” integrated into the rear spoiler houses the radio antenna. The signature full-width taillamp employs a filter to help the lamp read as one piece, rather than disparate dots of light. The interior blends function with flowing forms to inspire a sense of luxurious adventure. It is both open and cocoon-like, stunning yet quiet. The push-button gear shift enables true flow through from the instrument to the center console. This execution creates a dramatic open suspension bridge that flows from the instrument panel to the center console, providing two tiers of open space. An implied flow extends from the instrument panel to the doors. The overall effect creates visual width and a feeling of openness. Rich materials and exquisite detailing add to the experience. Lincoln Black

Label will be available at launch with four themes. Two are new: The Muse, inspired by the fashion, lifestyle and art scene of 1920s Paris; and Thoroughbred, inspired by the excitement, passion and pageantry of high-stakes horse racing. Modern Heritage and Indulgence also will be available. Warm and tailored experience The available 22-way multicontour front seats with Active Motion® can ease muscle fatigue and can be tailored for preference and comfort. The patented Active Motion function is a slight continuous movement in the seat cushion, which helps reduce potential back pain by provoking a change in the muscular activation of the pelvic area. Developed in part with input from orthopedic surgeons, this feature is especially beneficial on long trips or while waiting in traffic. The seat contour and fit for both driver and passenger can be adjusted to personalize the seat. Further adjustments can be made through the four-way power head restraint and the power cushion thigh extender Lincoln Experiences greets the driver when her or she, with key fob, is within approximately 9 feet. The lower LED daytime running lights gently brighten, while a “welcome mat” is projected on the ground from the folded mirrors. Door handles are illuminated, too, tuned to the exterior color. Interior sequential lighting begins at the bottom of the cabin, then illuminates the cupholders, pass-through, instrument panel, front door handles, front map pockets and rear doors. The lighting goes off in reverse order. The available panoramic Vista Roof® provides invigorating openair travel and a sky-high view of the passing scenery for all passengers.

the multimedia totem set up in Via Maistra in St. Moritz, the fourth edition of Passione Engadina came to its conclusion in the second half of August, an incredible gathering of Italian only historical cars, in the wonderful setting of St. Moritz the Engadin and the Suisse Alps, this year especially dedicated to Ferrari. The participants cars left on Friday, August 21st, from the two «starting points» of the Julius Baer Rally, Zurich (Dolder Sports) and Locarno (Airport of the Canton) with a unique meeting point at the Driving Graubünden in Cazis before reaching the Engadin through the Albula Pass. On Saturday, August 22nd, adrenaline ruled during the Zegna Challenge Cup at the Samedan Airport and at the S-Chanf military base. To be noted that the winner will come back to the next edition of Passione Engadina as a guest of the Organization, while also keeping the winner trophy for a year. During Saturday’s Gala Dinner at the Kulm Hotel, where – thanks to Julius Baer – a Formula E car was exhibited, the winners of the four categories of the regularity rally and the Zegna Challenge Cup were awarded. Guest of Honour at the 2015 edition was the worldwide know photographer Ercole Colombo and his pictures of the world of Formula 1 exhibited in cooperation with the St. Moritz Art Master at the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains. The Concours d’Elegance by popular vote on Sunday, August 23rd, during which the participating cars were exhibited in St. Moritz city centre, welcomed as absolute winner a Ferrari 275 GTS Cabriolet of 1966.

THE 500’S SPIRIT

The short film “Indianapolis” has been screened Sept. 26 at the Jalopnik Film Festival in Los Angeles. The stop-motion film created by INDYCAR photographer Shawn Gritzmacher from approximately 3,000 still photos taken over the month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, chronicles the 2015 Indianapolis 500 and highlights how current Verizon IndyCar Series drivers carry on the traditions and greater history of the “500.” “The inspiration for the short film was a similar piece created around the 24 Hours of Le Mans by motorsports photographer Camden Thrasher. I wanted to take what he did and apply it to the Indianapolis 500,” said Gritzmacher, a part-time Verizon IndyCar Series photographer and a full-time visual arts teacher at White Bear Lake Area High School in Minnesota. “I wanted to exhibit the spirit of the track as much as that of the drivers. It’s not just about the Pagoda. It’s not just about the Yard of Bricks. I wanted to show the rusty chain link fence

Films for the third-year Jalopnik event were screened and selected by Jeff Zwart, Spike Feresten, Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson and comedian/producer Adam Carolla, whose documentary titled “Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman” has also been featured at the festival.

MBER!

Despite the end of the championship being still far away, September has been as usual a key month in the Formula One World Championship year. Hamilton’s victories in Monza and Japan are a giant leap on his way to the third title, while Vettel’s triumph in Singapore represents the confirmation that Ferrari is now close to Mercedes as it has never been in the past two years. On the other side Rosberg seems unable to contrast Hamilton as the Williams duo Bottas/Massa still stirve to post their best performances to confirm the British team as the third force of the Championship.

A VERY HOT SEPTEMBER

IT A LY Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes: “This weekend has been just fantastic. A perfect weekend for me - I can’t remember one like it. This race is so special for every driver. When you stand up on that podium it’s so emotional. It’s a really proud moment to be up there in front of that sea of fans and to walk in the footsteps of so many great drivers who have won here. The start was pretty close, holding off Sebastian. But from there I felt in control. The balance wasn’t perfect for qualifying but it was one of the best I’ve had in the race. I can’t thank the team enough for all their hard work. Everyone at Brackley and Brixworth is doing such an incredible job. I’ve never seen anything like it, so thank you everyone.”

IT A LY Maurizio Arrivabene, Ferrari Team Principal: “This time I see the glass half full. Sebastian’s race to second place was unbelievable. His contribution to the team so far has been outstanding. As for Kimi, he had a great qualifying yesterday, then maybe he messed up a bit at the start of the race. But afterwards he was able to pass a lot of cars on the track with a fantastic race. Ideally, we would have hoped for two good starts, but we’re happy anyway with this weekend. We came here investing a few tokens on our Power Unit and we’re satisfied with our gain, also in terms of reliability. In the forthcoming races, the gap to our main competitors will depend much on the kind of track. We will keep on working with humility and determination to the end of the season, trying to jump on every opportunity”.

A VERY HOT SEPTEMBER

S IN G A PO R E Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari: “It was an incredible race today, in fact all in all an incredible weekend and it is difficult for me now to sum it up. The race was intense and long, I had some pressure from Daniel behind me, we were the quickest two cars out there today, but I was able to control the pace and look after the tyres, which ran ok for the whole weeekend. The car felt fantastic, I could control the gap until the end. Today we are in paradise, but we know we’re still a long way to go. It has been a surprise that Mercedes hasn’t been on the pace this weekend, we don’t know why, but to be honest we don’t really care. I am very happy for the team today, there has been a lot of work going in since the day I joined in. For the next races we will keep pushing 100 percent, we’ll give our maximum, like always. As long as there is a chance we have to go for it, we have to do everything we can. Mercedes are the ones to beat, the best way to do it is looking after ourselves and doing the best we can.”

A VERY HOT SEPTEMBER

S IN G A PO R E Valtteri Bottas, Williams: “I think finishing in fifth place is the maximum result we could get in Singapore. It’s a shame what happened with Felipe, because we lost some points with his DNF but, personally, I can be happy with my result. We were able to conduct our race exactly as planned. We had anticipated that a safety car was likely to come out and we executed everything really well when we needed too. We made some changes on the procedures for the pit stops and it all worked very well today, so that’s another good bit of news for us. This will give more confidence to the guys after the problems we’ve had in the pits in recent races and we are now in a much better place with our pit stops. The guys delivered today under pressure.”

Japanese GP, Suzuka. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes)

JA PA N Nico Roberg, Mercedes: “A tough day for me. It was very close throughout the corner and on the exit I had to go off the track to avoid a collision, which cost me speed and pushed me back to fourth place. After that, I was fighting for P2 today rather than the win. But I was able to push then and overtake Valtteri, which was great. The team did also a great job with the undercut of Sebastian, this worked out perfectly with a really hard out-lap on the new tyres. So second place is damage limitation for me, as I had to win here in Japan to close the gap to Lewis. But I will keep pushing and try to win in Sochi now. I had lots of positives this weekend. So I will be back strongly.

A VERY HOT SEPTEMBER

JA PA N Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari: “Today we did the maximum we could and, considering where we had started the race from fourth position is the best we could get. The car was OK and we had the right speed, but on a circuit like this, when you are stuck behind other cars, it’s always hard to overtake. We did a good job at the pit stop, managed to jump Bottas on the way out, and chose the right tires at the right time. I don’t think we could have done much more. This kind of track is not the best for us right now, but it seems things have worked well today. There’s still work to be done, but we are doing the right things and going in the right direction. Obviously, we always want to be at the top, but I think we have done an amazing job all year long and since last year. Now we keep doing the same progresses and try to improve. We take what we have got today and go to the next race trying to do the maximum.”

THIRD IN

Ogier, Ingrassia and VW crowned World Rally Champions for third time x

N A ROW!

Volkswagen claimed a triumphant success in the World Rally Championship. Ogier/ Ingrassia won the Rally Australia, ahead of team-mates Latvala/Anttila, to secure their third World Championship title in a row in the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ competitions. Mikkelsen/Fløene finished fourth to complete the fantastic team result. The Australian round also saw Volkswagen wrap up a third back-to-back Manufacturers’ Championship with rallies still to come.

THIRD IN A ROW

Sebastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)

Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia secured their third consecutive FIA World Rally Championship title after winning Coates Hire Rally Australia, the 10th round of the series, for the third time in a row. With team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila claiming second, Volkswagen Motorsport was also able to secure a third straight manufacturers’ crown. In the rally, Kris Meeke (Citroën DS3) fought the Polo R WRC drivers hard and finished third overall with Andreas Mikkelsen fourth, just 5.9 seconds further adrift Following in the footsteps of Lancia, Subaru, Peugeot and Citroën, Volkswagen now joins the list of manufacturers to have won three consecutive World Championship titles and the German marque can also celebrate the Polo R WRC’s 31st world rally victory from 36 starts. With a good haul of points from Rally Australia, Hyundai

Motorsport maintains its second position in the standings. With the Drivers’ and Co-drivers’ titles now settled, the fight for second and third in the Championship remains close between a handful of drivers, led by Latvala. The last day of the rally Australia was the shortest and covered five stages and 68.76 competitive kilometres. Ogier was on a mission from the outset and the Frenchman knocked out a string of five fastest stage times en route to this third title. Despite claiming he was not targeting the all-important Power Stage points too, he picked up the extra three points ahead of team-mates Latvala and Mikkelsen. In identical machinery, there was little Latvala could do to challenge Ogier but the Finn was happy to be on the podium, especially after a late scare with an alternator problem. Kris Meeke pushed the

Volkswagens hard, but was relieved to be back on the podium after a couple of difficult events. Mikkelsen was truly in the fight at the start of the last day and closed in on Meeke to be within 4.2 seconds of the Citroën driver. However, a mistake checking into the mid-day service saw the Norwegian crew pick up a 10 second penalty. While they fought to the finish, they missed out on the podium by just 5.9 seconds. Hayden Paddon claimed fifth to the delight of his thousands of Kiwi fans, picking up valuable points for Hyundai Motorsport. Ott Tanak finished sixth, despite

PIT STOP Sebastien Ogier (Volkswagen): “Of course, I feel great. I think before this event, everybody was thinking it would not be possible to win from first on the road after we have seen the roads on the recce. It was looking pretty impossible, but I always keep trying and this time I try even harder to compensate. Definitely it was hard for the first two days, but I produce one of the best performances on this event ever. I am very proud of this one and very proud of the whole team. It looks like an easy sentence to say this, but they deserve huge thanks. All together we make this incredible performance.” Does the third title feel any different? “Yeah, the number is different!” said Ogier “For sure, I guess at least for me the first one is always the strongest; you fight many years to get it – that one really, you feel a big relief. But the second was confirmation and it’s always nice to say: “I didn’t get one by chance.” And the third one is a nice continuation. But also, for me, we are just getting stronger and stronger. I don’t know if we’re on the top, but probably we are close to it. After 10 rounds this has been the perfect season so far: no major mistakes with Julien and only a single, small technical problem in the car – this is nothing in motorsport.”

clouting a bank and damaging the rear wheel in the final stage and Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo took seventh and eighth respectively. Eflyn Evans will be happy to put Rally Australia behind him, having struggled throughout the event and being at a loss to understand his lack of pace. Nasser Al-Attiyah rounded off the top 10 but more crucially scored maximum points in the FIA WRC 2 Championship category. He came under intense pressure from Yurii Protasov but bagged the haul of points to extend his lead in the Championship.

I think we did a very good job and we couldn’t really have expected to do much more on the final leg. We have to keep working hard.”

PIT STOP Lord March said: “The 18th Goodwood Revival drew a record sell-out crowd, who not only witnessed some of the most iconic racing cars ever built dicing wheel-to-wheel, but also celebrated the career of motor racing legend Bruce McLaren, saw - for the first time in history - all six original Shelby Daytona Coupes together on track and joined an incredibly poignant and fitting tribute to the bravery of all those who fought in the Battle of Britain. My sincere thanks to everyone who came for their support and enthusiasm for the event, which continues to be cherished by enthusiasts of motor racing and vintage culture across the world.”

Bruce McLaren tribute was a highlight

A record sell-out crowd of 149,000 enjoyed a sensational 18th Goodwood Revival Meeting during the weekend of September 11-13 at the iconic Goodwood Motor Circuit. The outstanding on-track moments of the weekend included the first gathering in history of all six original Shelby Daytona Coupes – on the 50th anniversary of the organisation’s World Sportscar title – and the honouring of the career of legendary racer, team boss and constructor Bruce McLaren. The Revival crowds were treated to a parade of some thirty racing cars to have been driven or created by the New Zealander. ‘Bruce McLaren was a talented engineer and a world class racing driver,’ observed Lord March ‘He was highly-skilled, meticulous and always fun.’ Bruce’s daughter Amanda and sister Jan joi-

ned a host of Bruce’s friends and colleagues on the grid, such as legendary McLaren designer Gordon Coppuck and forthright team manager Alastair Caldwell. It was a fitting tribute to one of the sport’s most significant figures. Among the drivers paying homage to McLaren whose legacy lives on in what is now known as McLaren Automotive, was Sir Jackie Stewart OBE. Race highlights included the annual RAC TT Celebration race for early-1960s GT cars, which was won by the JD Classics-prepared Jaguar E-type of former British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden and Chris Ward, and a back-to-front victory in the St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s saloons for the mighty Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt of ‘Mr Le Mans’ Tom Kristensen and Henry Mann. his first visit to Goodwood, secured victory in the Earl of March Trophy for post-war 500cc single-seaters, taking the lead at the final corner of a scintillating race, while success in the Lavant Cup, held exclusively for 1950s Ferrari sports prototypes, went the way of James Cottingham’s Ferrari 500 TRC. The 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain was commemorated with a poignant on-track moment on Sunday afternoon that featured 94-year-old Wing Commander Tom Neil, a Royal Air Force veteran who saw active service during the battle, and with an evocative 12-Spitfire flypast. Track displays included a collection of over 50 ‘Series’ Land Rovers and more than 25 US ‘Gassers’ that lit up their tyres with a series

of spectacular burn-outs each morning, while the Earls Court Motor Show central concours celebrated Ferrari through the ages. Off-track, the 60th anniversary of the Fish Finger was marked with an authentic trawler while 50 years of Youthquake was marked with a 3D billboard featuring live models in Miniskirts. Bonhams’ Saturday sale of historic cars and automobilia resulted in £763,000 being achieved for Keith Richards’ Bentley ‘Blue Lena’ while the Revival High Street featured period stores from Tesco, Kenwood, Bendicks and more, and the March Motor Works presented by BMW Group took the form of a trendy London Mews garage and celebrated coachbuilt specials from BMW, Rolls-Royce and MINI.

MIES TAKES ANOTHER VICTORY With the championship on the line in both the outright GT3 and the Trophy Class categories heading into the penultimate round of the Australian GT Championship in Melbourne, the six-car Audi Sport customer racing Australia team knew they were at the turning point in the season. In the outright category, three-time 2015 race winner Nathan Antunes held a narrow lead over reigning Nurburgring 24-Hour team-mate Christopher Mies, himself a two-time winner in 2015. The pair were separated by just 11-points coming in,

and after qualifying, they knew their work would be cut out for them with the pace of their opponents, and the long pit stop penalties which both teams would incur. Ultimately though, despite the challenges and the speed of their rivals, Mies and co-driver Ryan Millier took a third and a win to claim the round victory and move ahead in the points, whilst Antunes - who was Audi’s top qualifier - had a tough weekend by contrast falling back to second in the points heading into the final round of the season in New Zealand in mid-November.

Elliot Barbour/Glen Wood (Lamborghini Gallardo FL2 GT3)

We must underline that the Sandown Raceway week end has been a great one on the Italian cars side also, with the Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Grant Denyer and Tony D’Alberto able to win Race 1 and the Lamborghini Gallardo of Elliot Barbour and Glen Wood that took an impressive third, just metres behind the second placed Mercedes and only three seconds down on the race winner despite the fact the duo had started from the eighth row of the grid! They weren’t battling for

the only ones a championship

- in Trophy Class, for olderspecification FIA-GT3 cars team-mates Greg Taylor and Barton Mawer and stablemate Mark Griffith have been locked in a battle for the second tier championship since the opening round in Adelaide, and Melbourne would prove no different, although both teams lost a little ground to title rival Porsche’driver Theo Koundouris who claimed his second round win of the year. The last round of the series is scheduled for November 13/15 at the Highlands Motorsport Park, in Cromwell, new Zealand.

CROSS COUNTRY

One-Two China glory for the Peugeot 2008 DKR… and the new DKR16 revealed

THE SILK R

The new 2008DKR16 during the tests in Morocco

ROAD RALLY StĂŠphane Peterhansel and Cyril Despres overcame the exceptionally varied challenges thrown at them by the atypical China Silk Road Rally to collect a highly encouraging one-two finish for the PEUGEOT 2008 DKR at the end of the 5,442-kilometre event!

THE SILK ROAD RALLY Peugeot enjoys a successful motorsport record in China, including endurance racing wins with the Peugeot 908 at Zhuhai in 2010 and 2011. This year, the team returned to the brand’s biggest market to take on a challenge of a very different sort: the China Silk Road Rally. This cross-country rally, which ended on September 11, will go down in Peugeot Sport history as the backdrop not only to the Peugeot 2008 DKR’s maiden victory but also to a resounding one-two result. En route to picking up the top prizes at the finish in Dunhuang, Stéphane Peterhansel/JeanPaul Cottret (#181) and Cyril Despres/David Castera (#182) completed 2,000 kilometres of competitive action, plus a further 3,479km in liaison sections, in the course of the two-week event. Stéphane Peterhansel appeared at the top of the leaderboard on the second day and maintained his strong pace to add six more stage victories to the Peugeot 2008 DKR’s maiden stage success on SS2. He went on to collect his first win on this rally, a month after celebrating his 50th birthday! The Peugeot 2008 DKR’s one-two finish coincided with the first major result for Cyril Despres on four wheels. Ever the perfectionist, the studious ex-biker made progress every day along with his new co-driver David Castera. The pair’s determination was rewarded with their first stage victory on SS11, which was followed by another on SS13. In all, they contributed to five one-two finishes for Peugeot the course of the fortnight. Their consistency saw them emerge in second place after Day 4, after which they succeeded in defending their position until today’s finish. The long route was extremely varied, although the rhythm was interrupted by the cancellation

of Leg 3 and by timetable changes to give the organisers time to check that certain portions remained practicable despite the downpours that fell over the region during the rally. The 2015 China Silk Rally’s menu featured vast expanses of occasionally huge sand dunes, as well as fast, flowing sections, river beds, rocks, stones and even mud. The two Team Peugeot Total crews took all these types of terrain in their stride and were helped along the way by the Peugeot 2008 DKRs’ faultless form. Neither Stéphane nor Cyril had any technical issues to report and the changes that have been made to the car’s technical specification proved competitive and reliable. The new one…just got bigger and better! Just a few days later an updated version of the two-wheel drive beast has been revealed. This latest evolution of the car, which is scheduled to make its competitive debut later in the year before heading to South America, is longer, wider, lower and more powerful than its predecessor: presenting a more aggressive stance, with a raft of improvements under the skin as well. The front and rear overhangs have been reduced, enhancing the car’s go-anywhere ability. This is vital when it comes to tackling the varied obstacles such as sand dunes, river beds, and huge rocks that characterise the Dakar, making it one of the last true sporting adventures left on earth. The Peugeot 2008DKR16 also benefits from improved aerodynamics: the bonnet and roofmounted air-intake have been heavily revised, in order to provide more balanced downforce between front and rear. The new air scoop also ensures better airflow.

PIT STOP Stéphane PETERHANSEL after the Chinese Rally: “We are proud and delighted to have provided the new-generation Peugeot 2008 DKR with its first cross-country rally victory! The last stage was pretty stressful, particularly towards the end. That’s when you start hearing every little noise the car makes. Cyril and David caught us and we ran together to the Stop Control. Looking back, the rally was globally quite long, not exceptionally hard in terms of its distance but great fun to drive, with some absolutely incredible landscapes, including a region where there were both lakes and dunes. Technically, we were hoping for a trouble-free run and that’s what we got. Every morning, we knew we could have confidence in our car and in the amazing job done by the team after each stage. That’s always good for morale.”

The new 2008DKR16

THE SILK ROAD RALLY Other evolutions lie under its carbon skin. The suspension has been redesigned to deal more effectively with the different and rough terrains. It also benefits from better weight distribution, as well as magnesium one-piece wheels for the first time, matched to lighter tyres from Michelin. These replace the aluminium two-piece wheels from last year, with the combination resulting in a significant weight saving. The new car has been a continual work in progress, with development work starting as soon as the original car crossed the finish ramp in Buenos Aires just over seven months ago, at the conclusion of this year’s Dakar. Peugeot’s engineers went over their ‘Lion’ piece by piece, analysing what could be done better, with the help of its Dakar experts Stéphane Peterhansel (an 11-time winner), Carlos Sainz (a two-time world rally champion and also former Dakar winner) as well as Cyril Despres (a fivetime Dakar winner on bikes). There are some surprises under the bonnet as well. Despite the air restrictor, the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine now has more power. The driveability of the engine is increased too, which will be particularly useful during twisty stages. Peugeot Sport Director Bruno Famin, overseeing the final test in Morocco to sign off the latest incarnation of Peugeot’s Dakar challenger, commented: “There isn’t one big change that we have made on our car: instead it has been a series of small evolutions in different areas, which together we hope will amount to an overall improvement. The areas we have concentrated on include bodywork and aerodynamics – as a result of which the car looks slightly different compared to last year – as well as engine and suspension, which is all

under the skin. The tests we have carried out up to now, as well as our one-two finish in China recently, indicate that we are heading in the right direction. You really cannot compare our state of preparation now to how it was for our first Dakar this time last year, when everything was new to us! Of course you can never say that you are completely ready for the Dakar either because you simply never know what it will throw at you, but certainly this time we are more ready.” Peterhansel and Sainz have driven the new car through the different phases of its development, and found it to be a useful step forward from its predecessor, providing greater driveability, power and traction. Peterhansel, who gave the Peugeot 2008 DKR its first-ever overall win, in China, said: “You can really feel the difference now that the car is longer and wider, with a lower centre of gravity, because it’s a lot more stable so cornering speeds are faster. You can feel the difference in the engine as well: not only is it more powerful but also you can use all the power even at low revs. We’ve almost got a ‘problem’ now of how to manage all that power most effectively, but this is a very nice problem to have. We’re still not at the maximum of our capabilities, but testing has been very productive so far.” Sainz stayed behind to concentrate on development work rather than competing in China. As a result, he has accumulated plenty of experience of the brand new challenger. The Spaniard added: “It’s been good testing and the car has been running really well. The potential of the car is much, much bigger than it was at this time last year and reliability has been solid too. We’ve changed quite a lot in the car in many key areas, so really we can call this one a completely new car compared to last year. I feel optimistic.”

Cyril DESPRES after the Chinese Rally: “We couldn’t be happier. We weren’t expecting a result like this. It was a long rally, with so many different types of terrain to discover. We were also aware of where we needed to improve as a crew and I have the lingering sensation that I was never able to run at 100 percent over any one stage. Every day, it seemed there was something that prevented us from pushing from start to finish as hard as we might have done. David and I have made progress, though, and the reflexes are coming, like the way we analyse each stage as soon as it’s over, for example. The rhythm of the rally also allowed us to bond with everyone and make the most of the two weeks as a team.”

FORD ECOBOOST WINS IN AUSTIN The 20 September was Scott Pruett’s 60th career win and his first with co-driver Joey Hand. It was the duo’s fourth podium of 2015 (p2 Long Beach/ Watkins Glen, p3 Road America). The Ford EcoBoost team was the only prototype team to make only two pit stops. Hand ran the quickest lap of the event (1:58.616), bettering the 1:58.752 he ran earlier in the 2-hour, 41-min. race. Pruett started the race on pole after clocking a 1:58.441 in qualifying. “The good Lord has blessed me – said Scott with this incredible career. I’ve had the opportunity to work for an incredible team and team owner. Different teammates over the years, and Joey and I probably fit together the best of any so far. He grew up right on the other side of town, only about a half hour, 45 minutes away. It’s just been awesome. The whole run I’ve had, through what started in the Grand-Am Series, then the TUDOR

series, and all the way through I’ve had successes, but you’re only as good as your last race and it’s been a tough year. It’s been a tough season. Without a doubt, we hadn’t won a race since this race last year, then with Joey coming on board, Joey got me excited as well. We came out with a good car the first time at Daytona and broke, we had a pretty strong car at Road America and had a mechanical issue. But I just can’t say enough for the Ford Performance team and Ford EcoBoost and especially the (Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates) team. Champions are champions, and you look and see what Scott Dixon did (in IndyCar) a few weeks back, winning the championship from almost 50 points back, that’s the heart of the team. It just resonates through the soul of everybody there. I’m proud to be part of it. I’m proud to get win No. 60. It’s just been an incredible run.”

South African Rally Championship With two podiums and victory in the Manufacturers’ Championship, Volkswagen Sasolracing was the dominant team at the sixth round of the South African Rally Championship. Gugulethu Zulu/Hilton Auffrey (ZA/ZA) claimed their best result so far in the Volkswagen Polo on the roads around Cape Town (ZA). Third place went to their South African team-mates Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries, who made it onto the podium for the second event in succession.

Henk Lategan/Barry White (ZA/ZA) came home fourth in another Polo to complete an outstanding result for Volkswagen. They dominated the second day of the rally with three stage wins, but missed out on a better result due to damage sustained to their car on the 13th and final special stage. The final round of the season in the South African Rally Championship will take place in Polokwane (ZA) on 16 and 17 October.

McLaren claims victory at Blancpain Series finale The McLaren 650S GT3 scored its second victory of the Blancpain Endurance Series season at the weekend with victory for McLaren GT customer team Von Ryan Racing. Works drivers Rob Bell, Shane van Gisbergen and Kevin Estre battled through the grid after a challenging qualifying session, but a bold strategy call by the team saw the McLaren add to the victory in Silverstone, with a winning margin of 14 seconds. This result makes the 650S GT3 the only model to secure two victories this season in one of the most world’s competitive GT series.Â

Courtney wins the Trofeo Maserati North America

Jeff Courtney came out on top in the Trofeo Maserati North America. The series ended last weekend (12-13 September) at Laguna Seca in what was the final round in the Pirelli World Challenge. Five Maserati GranTurismo MCs, in GTS set up, took part at the California circuit; the mini-championship also saw two other rounds run in the USA: the first at Road America, in June, and at the Virginia International Raceway in August. The special classification was reserved to Us drivers who took part in all three americans rounds. In the end, Courtney triumphed on 77 points, with Patrick Byrne 10 points down. As well as bringing home the title, Courtney also earned the right to dispute the last round in the Maserati Trofeo World Series. This will be held at Abu Dhabi, UAE, in December.

Urrutia Crowned Champion Canadian Garett Grist secured a weekend sweep in the Grand Prix of Monterey (mid September). The double victory propelled Grist from sixth in the Pro Mazda Championship points chase to third and allowed his Juncos Racing team to clinch the coveted Team Championship in style. Santiago “Santi” Urrutia, who clinched the championship title as well as a $590,000 Mazda Scholarship prize to assist in his graduation to Indy Lights in 2016, finished second – his ninth podium appearance during a stellar rookie season in North America – while Neil

Alberico bounced back from a spin on Saturday to finish third. Will Owen maintained his strong end to the season by finishing fourth ahead of Dalton Kellett and 16-year-old Texas-based Mexican Patricio “Pato” O’Ward, who bounced back impressively after being an innocent victim of an incident at the start of Saturday’s race. O’Ward took home the Quarter Master Hard Charger Award, having made up eight positions during the race, as well as the RePlay XD Move of the Race Award for the manner in which he vaulted from 14th to eighth on the first lap.

Formula 3 Masters
