GATEBIL ON ICE

G AT E B I L O N I C E

While

most European teams are tucked up in warm workshops waiting for the new season to kick into gear, a hardcore group of racers ventured out to Norway on the 30th January 2016, for what is known as Gatebil on Ice. Between them the World RX racer and XGames medalist Liam Doran, that armed with his fire-spitting Rallycross car decided that there was no better way to catch a slice of the action than to join the snow shredding mayhem on the frozen lakes. “That’s so much fun. Seriously some of the most fun I’ve had in my car,” said a stoked Liam Doran. “I can’t believe how awesome those tyres are. I was having to weave around the traffic on the tighter track, but I still had enough control to fully link turns and send it in sideways. I was at the top of sixth gear on the big circuit layout, which just feels crazy on ice. Because of the small fuel tank we run for rallycross races, I only had enough fuel to run for a couple of laps at a time – I wanted to stay out longer. The whole event has just been a lot of fun, and to top it off we came away with some trophies; runner up in the powerslide contest, and second place in the ‘snow and shine’. Not bad for rallycross competition car. I can’t wait to do it all again.”

Liam Doran: “I honestly believe that World Rally Cross drivers are not paid enough. The level of RX events is more and more professional, we are visiting top level racing facilities and the show we offer is superexciting. I think the moment is arrived that the driver’s fee has to be a upgraded…”

As

Ford Motor Company readies the latest generation of the Ford GT to compete at Le Mans, Shelby American, Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc.) will offer a limited run of twenty total 50th Anniversary Shelby GT40 MK II cars to honor this historic racing achievement. In the mid-1960s, Henry Ford II turned to Carroll Shelby to help the blue oval capture the international sports car championship including an overall win in the world’s biggest car race, the 24 hours of Le Mans. Beginning with a victory at Daytona in February 1966, Ford and Shelby dominated sports car racing. They combined for a 1-2-3 sweep of the 1966 Le Mans race and then won it the next three straight years. “Carroll Shelby’s involvement in Ford’s Le Mans program is one of the best-known chapters in our racing history,” said Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International “Carroll Shelby shared Henry Ford II’s desire to defeat the house of Enzo Ferrari on the inter-

national stage to earn American automakers worldwide respect. The successful partnership between Shelby and Ford continues and can be seen in every vehicle we build today.” The Shelby continuation cars are built around the original style steel monocoque unibody chassis and fully independent suspension using unequal length A-arms. Over twothirds of the parts are interchangeable with the original racecar. The car also stays true to the original GT40 MK II’s dimensions (163 inches long and 40 inches high) with the same two 10-gallon fuel tanks. Even the cockpit stays true to the original with Smith style gauges and silver riveted seats. It can be ordered in right or left-hand drive and in 3 different color configurations including black/silver, blue/white or red/white with the original 15 inch Halibrand style pin drive wheels. Other than the introduction of adding the creature comfort of air conditioning, with a big block Ford FE 427 engine installed, the car looks and feels like it just stepped out of Parc Ferme.

GT40 AGAIN!

Founded by legend Carroll Shelby, Shelby American manufactures and markets performance vehicles and related products. The company builds authentic continuation Cobras, including the 427 S/C, 289 FIA, 289 street car and Daytona Coupe component vehicles; it offers the Shelby GT, 1000, GT500 Super Snake, Shelby Terlingua Racing Team and GTS post-title packages for the 2005-2016 Ford Mustang. The Jaguar F-Pace

FOR T H OS E W H O

L O V E D RI V I N G The Jaguar F-PACE is a performance crossover and engineered to offer the agility, responsiveness and refinement that all Jaguars are renowned for, together with excellente dynamics and everyday versatility

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING

Developed using Jaguar’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture, the all-new F-PACE combines purity of line, surface and proportion with F-TYPEinspired features such as the powerful rear haunches, fender vents and distinctive tail light graphics.

The bold front grille and the muscular bonnet hint at the performance potential of engines like the 380PS supercharged V6. Elements such as slender full-LED headlights, forged 22inch wheels and short front overhang carry the design vision of the C-X17 concept through to production. The F-PACE seats five occupants in absolute comfort. The interior is a perfect blend of premium materials and finishes, exquisite detailing, luxuries such as heated, electrically-reclining rear seats, and cutting-edge technologies including the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING The Lightweight Aluminium Architecture gave the design and engineering teams the ideal starting point. It was created from the outset as a modular structure, so the wheels can be positioned exactly where they are needed to deliver the proportions, dynamics, and practicality essential for a performance crossover. The wheelbase and track are not shared with any other Jaguar. At 4,731mm long and with a 2,874mm wheelbase, the all-new F-

PACE offers the sleek profile and short front overhang characteristic of Jaguar design together with a spacious interior. Rear knee-room is class-leading and the luggage compartment volume is an astonishing 650-litres. The light, stiff body structure comprises 80 per cent aluminium, and is the only aluminium-intensive monocoque in the segment. Additional weight savings come from the composite tailgate and magnesium for parts such as the cross-car beam. The result is that the rear-wheel drive 180PS diesel manual transmission model weighs as little as 1,665kg and achieves CO2 emissions of just 129g/km. With the 380PS su-

Kevin Stride, Vehicle Line Director: “This is a performance crossover with outstanding dynamics yet also delivers a smooth, quiet ride. The F-TYPE-inspired design combines dramatic looks with a spacious interior and an exceptionally large luggage compartment. Together with our all-new infotainment system, our most advanced all-wheel drive system and an outstanding range of active safety technologies, the all-new F-PACE makes every journey a better, more rewarding experience.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING

Meticulously and exhaustively tested at locations around the world, every wheel and tyre combination offers the optimum balance of grip, low rolling resistance, comfort and durability. The all-new F-PACE offers unrivalled choice, from 18-inch wheels designed specifically to reduce aerodynamic drag to 22-inch wheels which offer the biggest rolling diameter in the segment.

percharged V6 petrol engine from the F-TYPE under its sculpted aluminium bonnet, the allnew F-PACE can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.1 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The highly optimised structure, which also features advanced high strength steels in areas such as the rear floor, is joined using 2,616 self-piercing rivets, 72.8 metres of structural adhesive and 566 spot-welds. The resulting

torsional stiffness matches that of all-new XF and, together with the advanced suspension systems, is key to the all-new F-PACE’s unrivalled blend of ride, handling and refinement – on all surfaces. The body’s high torsional stiffness enables the F-TYPE-derived double wishbone front suspension and sophisticated Integral Link rear suspension to perform even better. Together with Torque Vectoring as standard and an Electric Power Assisted Steering system tuned to give the best possible feel and response, the all-new F-PACE sets the benchmark for ride and handling.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING Even the entry-level model benefits from monotube dampers as standard, but for even better ride and handling the electronicallycontrolled Adaptive Dynamics system measures body and wheel movement 100 and 500 times a second respectively, ensuring optimum damping forces in all conditions. For the most enthusiastic drivers there’s Configurable Dynamics: first used in the F-TYPE, this feature allows individual settings for the

throttle, automatic transmission, steering, and, where fitted, the Adaptive Dynamics system. Using state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics simulations and applying lessons learnt from the XE and all-new XF, the F-PACE has a drag coefficient of only 0.34, helping to reduce fuel consumption and improve refinement. The vehicle is also engineered for exceptionally low lift and excellent lift balance front-to-rear, resulting in better steering feel and stability at higher speeds. The F-PACE’s torque on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) system is Jaguar’s most sophisticated yet, and has the highest torque capa-

The all-new F-PACE also brings the world debut of Jaguar’s Activity Key. A waterproof, shockproof wristband with an integrated transponder, this segment-first, wearable technology supports active lifestyles because it allows the keyfob to be securely locked inside the vehicle – invaluable if you’re going surfing, for example, or kayaking. Locking the all-new F-PACE using the Activity Key will disable any keyfobs left inside. Activity Key works on the same RF frequencies as the other keys and is used to lock and unlock the vehicle by holding it in close proximity to the J of the Jaguar lettering on the tailgate. Activity Key has no battery, so you never have to worry about changing it.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING

Ian Callum, Director of Design: “By remaining absolutely true to our design principles the all-new F-PACE is immediately recognisable as a Jaguar. It offers all of the interior space you would expect – and more – but because of our disciplined approach to surfaces, proportions, and purity of line, we have designed what I consider to be the most balanced, most attractive vehicle in its class”.

city. It features the advanced, in-house control system first developed for F-TYPE AWD: Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD). IDD preserves rear-wheel drive agility and handling character but can seamlessly transfer torque to the front wheels to exploit the performance benefits of extra traction, on all surfaces and in all weathers. Adaptive Surface Response (ASR) makes the AWD system even more effective in challen-

ging conditions. Integrated into Jaguar Drive Control, ASR identifies the type of surface and optimises the mapping of the powertrain and Dynamic Stability Control system. First launched in the all-new XF, ASR has been enhanced by a third mode designed for deep snow and gravel. Another world-class technology developed for adverse conditions is All Surface Progress Control (ASPC). To make the most of the available grip, ASPC automatically controls the throttle and the brakes, enabling the vehicle to pull away smoothly: the driver just has to steer. ASPC functions between 3.6km/h and

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE DRIVING 30km/h, and the driver selects the desired speed using the cruise control switches. ASPC is compatible with rear- and all-wheel drive. For drivers who want similar results but still want to use the accelerator pedal, there’s LowFriction Launch (LFL). This function uses a very progressive throttle map, making the vehicle easier to control, and the all-new F-PACE is the first Jaguar to offer it. The F-PACE has been engineered to satisfy the most stringent safety standards and provides exceptional levels of occupant and pedestrian protection. The standard of active safety is just as high, thanks to a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. The state-of-the-art stereo camera at the heart of the Autonomous Emergency Braking system now features a pedestrian detection function – a Jaguar-first. The stereo camera also enables Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, an Intelligent Speed Limiter, and Driver Condition Monitor systems. Key information such as vehicle speed and speed limits can be projected directly into the driver’s line of sight by the laser head-up display. The high contrast colour images can also show cruise control settings and turn-byturn navigation instructions. Compared to conventional systems, laser technology is smaller and lighter and the images remain clear even in bright sunlight. Infotainment and connectivity technology is just as advanced. Whether you want to start the engine using a smartphone app, have a navigation system that can tell your contacts when you’ll arrive for your meeting, connect up to eight devices using the Wi-Fi hotspot, or just stream your favourite playlists – the all-new F-PACE delivers. The premium InControl Touch Pro system is based around a 10.2-inch touchscreen, with a powerful quad-core processor and solid-

state drive, and runs on ultra-fast Ethernet. The user interface is intuitive, the graphics sharp and incredibly responsive. The navigation system can save you time by learning your commute, offers true door-to-door guidance and can even advise others of your arrival time. Navigation can also be shown full-screen – in 3D – in the 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster. The all-new F-PACE range will consist of: F-PACE Pure, F-PACE Prestige, F-PACE Portfolio, F-PACE R-Sport, F-PACE S, F-PACE First Edition. The powertrain range will consist of: 180PS 2.0-litre diesel manual RWD/ AWD and automatic AWD; 240PS 2.0-litre petrol automatic RWD; 300PS 3.0-litre diesel automatic AWD; 340PS and 380PS 3.0-litre petrol automatic AWD. From the 129g/km efficiency of the fourcylinder Ingenium diesel to the power and throttle response of the 380PS supercharged V6 from the F-TYPE, every engine provides an ideal balance of performance, refinement and economy, and meets strict Euro 6 emissions regulations. Together with manual and automatic transmissions, and rear- and all-wheel drive, the new F-PACE offers a peerless driving experience and exceptional customer choice. All six-cylinder engines are paired with the 8HP70 transmission, while the four-cylinders are matched to the lighter, more compact 8HP45. The latter also features a state-of-theart pendulum damper in the torque converter: this device is extremely effective at absorbing low frequency vibrations, enabling the engines to run at lower speeds without compromising refinement. The all-new F-PACE is manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull Plant alongside the Jaguar XE sports saloon.

THIS IS THE BEST

“This

is the best,” said Hamlin after the race. “It’s the biggest race of my life. The Daytona 500 is the pinnacle of our sport and I’m just proud to be here.” Toyota Camry drivers also claimed four of the top-five finishing positions with Busch (third) and Carl Edwards (fifth) also finishing behind Hamlin and Truex. In addition, Toyota drivers combined to lead 158 laps (of 200) to kick off the 2016 season. “This is a team victory,” continued Hamlin. “My teammates did an amazing job all day working together – all the Toyotas. This is a proud moment for everyone at Toyota. This wouldn’t be possible if this wasn’t Toyotas sticking together all race long. We were able to get up, capture our track position. This is amazing for Toyota.” Since becoming a Toyota driver in 2008, Hamlin has won 24 of his 27 career NSCS victories. He won a Daytona Duel qualifying race in 2008, a non-points event, which is the Camry’s first ever victory of any kind in NSCS competition. “Winning the Daytona 500 is a tremendous accomplishment by Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Ed Laukes, vice president of marketing, performance and guest experience for Toyota U.S.A. “We are incredibly honored to win NASCAR’s biggest race and to not only win, but to see how strong our Toyota drivers ran all race – especially in the closing laps where it almost came down to any one of five of our guys could have won.

That speaks volumes. Winning last year’s championship and now the Daytona 500 has been a huge aspiration for Toyota since joining NASCAR in 2004. We are honored to compete and win races and championships at the Sprint Cup Series level,” continued Laukes. “The consistency and hard work by our team partners and TRD team members has enabled Toyota to enjoy successes across multiple racing platforms and we are dedicated through unwavering support of all NASCAR series.” The 2016 season marks Toyota’s 10th season competing in the Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR’s top level, where Camry drivers have won 80 events since joining the series in 2007. Last year, Busch won the first NSCS championship for the manufacturer and Toyota drivers won 14 races, tying the most by Camry racers in a single-season. “This is the greatest race in America,” said David Wilson, president and general manager of Toyota Racing Development. “For our company to have won it makes it that special. The reason we came into the sport was to connect with the American fans, to talk about how we build every Camry in America. I still remember what resonated my first time at Daytona, this moniker – ‘The Great American Race’ – as we were looking at why we should come into NASCAR. That was a big part of it – to have a shot at winning ‘The Great American Race,’ to be able to talk to the incredible, powerful fan base that NASCAR has. How do you quantify the value? It’s truly stunning and special.”

THE R A CI N G S I DE Interview with Tom Kristensen

T H E G R AND

MARSHALL

More than once asked if he would consider a comeback in order to drive at the Rolex 24, Tom Kristensen denied this possibility while telling journalist that his main focus in that moment was on his role as Grand Marshall of the event by Niccolo’ Gargiulo

THE GRAND MARSHALL

The

sight and sounds of the Rolex 24 at Daytona have inspired many over the years. Edition after edition the manufacturers have built better cars to withstand the challenges of the day-long race, spectators have repeated their rituals to reaffirm their passion for endurance racing, while drivers have strived to find a seat for the prestigious marathon at the ‘World Center of Racing’. This year the tradition was repeated once more for the 54th time. Cars of all shapes and colors lined up on the starting grid, spectators filled the brand new ‘Motorsport Stadium’ (the $400 million Daytona Rising refurbishment project debuted during the Rolex 24), and a familiar face was seen walking the paddock. 9 time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen, Mr. Le Mans itself, made it to the Daytona 24 for the first time, not as a driver though, but as the Grand Marshal of the event. We had the chance to catch up with him and ask him about his racing career and his future. Looking back at your career, would you do something different? “No, I have no regrets. I have been blessed with a lot of great cars, great teams and great teammates. As you know, racing sports cars has been the very best in my career: I loved the paddock, I loved the way you have that sense of respect and camaraderie that I think is unique in sports car racing. Since I drove sports cars for the first time, I have always done it. No regrets. Sometimes I definitely could have braked a little bit earlier, but apart from that I think you learn from your mistakes, you learn from experience and at the end of the day you become a better driver. “

Tom Kristensen on the Audi R8 at Le Mans in 2002

In Florida Tom Kristensen proved his fitness once more‌ and not just as Grand Marshall of the Daytona 24 Hours. Under palm trees, the 48-year-old Dane participated in a half marathon in Fort Lauderdale, just north of Miami. Tom achieved 15th place among 274 entrants in his age group in the A1A marathon, setting a good example in the process: Kristensen has been signed by Audi Sport to assist the Audi factory drivers with their fitness programs in racing.

THE GRAND MARSHALL Like many drivers do, have you ever dreamt of racing in Formula 1? “Well, yes. As a small kid driving go-karts in Europe I definitely thought of Formula 1. It was part of the reason why I became a driver, but being from Denmark it was difficult in terms of sponsorship. In the early days I had to mature through the German Formula 3 Championship and Japanese Formula 3 Championship, which I both won, then I went into Formula 3000. I did all the steps but then I had the big break when I was signed by Team Joest just two days before the 1997 Le Mans 24 Hours. I drove a private Porsche with Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson.” “Alboreto was incredibly good to me. He didn’t put any pressure on me but just told me that he was honored to have me as a teammate. I couldn’t believe it! He was coming from his long career [in Formula 1] and was very determined to win Le Mans. To finish with a win that year, and with the lap record at Le Mans was incredible. I have to thank not only the team but also Johansson and Alboreto for the way they gave me faith and the way they taught me a lot. That’s how my career in Endurance racing started.”

THE GRAND MARSHALL After a so successful racing career are you now considering a “new” career in the FIA? “Jean Todt has asked me about taking the role as a steward, which I have taken on together with Charlie Whiting and other colleagues. It’s now my second year as president of the Driver’s Commission, which for me is a sort of advisory role, and definitely does its case. We have quite a lot of importance within the FIA and we are happy to get feedback from basically all the drivers worldwide. Lot of good people work for the Commission, Emerson Fittipaldi is the vice president, and all the various categories of motorsport are represented, from Karting to Formula racing to Rally. It is very important that the drivers have a strong voice within the FIA and the whole motorsport world.” When asked if he would become the future president of the FIA, Kristensen smiles at first but then strongly nods and says no. He then reiterates that he prefers working with the drivers than being a politician: “I care about the sport and I have my opinion. But I am not necessarily a politician, I am a great passionate with a big heart for racing.” Any advice on how you would change things in the motorsport world? “It’s a big questions. I’d just say that from a driver’s perspective these cars are getting more and more complex and it’s something we have to keep an eye on, because we need the best drivers to win the best races and we need the drivers to being able to make a difference without the many distractions of a complex racecar. Circuit limits and circuit safety are some other topics we need to look at, to make sure that drivers respect the rules on track.”

Le Mans 24 Hours 2008

THE GRAND MARSHALL Mr. Le Mans also wanted to share his thoughts on the Daytona 24 Hours race that opens the track racing season every year: “What is so special about it is that it really feels like the home of American racing. There is a lot of history here, from when they started racing on the sandy beaches of Daytona Beach, and now with this new impressive facility, Daytona Rising, spectators are able to see everything on track. I don’t think it’s anybody’s favorite racetrack but it creates great racing for all these drivers that come from many different categories. I think the camaraderie and the prestige of the race are the most unique things.” The 54th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona was won by the No. 2 Extreme Speed Motorsports Honda Ligier P2 driven by Scott Sharp, Johannes van Overbeek and Pipo Derani. In the GT Le Mans class the Corvettes prevailed over Porsche, while in GTD it was Audi ahead of Porsche and Dodge Viper.

G L O B A L N E WS Nissan unleashes trio of aggressive “Winter Warrior” concepts

The FROZEN TRIO Custom-built Pathfinder, Murano and Rogue ready to conquer extreme winter weather with full snow track systems Transformation from stock to “Warrior” mode includes Nissan Design America (NDA) – designed custom body wraps and full use of Genuine Nissan Accessories for the outdoor enthusiast

THE FROZEN TRIO

There’s

winter, then there’s Warrior Winter. Snowfall, ice, drifts – conditions that challenge even the most capable of all-wheel drive vehicles. But not these aggressive Nissan models. In celebration of the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan created one-off versions of its popular Pathfinder, Murano and Rogue equipped with sets of heavy-duty snow tracks. The three custom Nissan “Winter Warrior” crossovers are ready to tackle even the record-breaking snowfalls experienced by many parts of the country already this year. “Rogue, Murano and Pathfinder are proven all-wheel-drive crossovers that are very popular with customers, judging from exceptional sales results in 2015 and now in January 2016,” said Christian Meunier, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations “With the Winter Warriors, we wanted to take that idea to the extreme, enhancing the vehicles’ advanced systems with special snow tracks, Genuine Nissan Accessories, and a custom exterior appearance.” All three Nissan Winter Warriors feature custom heavy-duty track systems with custom matteblack finish frames. The DOMINATOR® Tracks, from American Track Truck, Inc., are 48 inches long, 30 inches high and 15 in-

ches wide and replace the vehicles’ wheels and tires. The suspensions and wheel wells were modified to fit the snow tracks, but otherwise all drivetrain components, including the engines and Xtronic transmissions, are factory fresh. Nissan Design America created identical, custom matte red-chrome body wraps featuring a unique “track” design and Nissan “Winter Warrior” signage. A range of Genuine Nissan Accessories are also fitted to the three Winter Warriors, including cargo area protectors, all-season floor mats, roof rail crossbars and rear bumper protectors. They also each feature 9x9-foot hatch tents for true hardcore winter camping enthusiasts. “With their solid Nissan underpinnings and exceptional ground clearance, these Winter Warriors are serious, extreme weather machines, not toys,” said Meunier. “But, they sure are fun – just like our entire lineup of family adventure-ready Pathfinders, Muranos and Rogues that you can drive straight off the showroom floor.” Nissan SUV and crossovers have experienced record sales in recent years. In 2015, Murano sales increased 33 percent, while Rogue set an all-time record of more than 287,000 units – an increase of 44 percent. The sales momentum has continued in 2016 with a record-setting month for Pathfinder, Rogue and Murano, to the tune of 5 percent, 26 percent and 46 percent increases, respectively.

In North America Nissan is also dedicated to improving the environment under the Nissan Green Program and has been recognized annually by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency as an ENERGY STAR速 Partner of the Year since 2010

G L O B A L N E WS BAC Mono with new chassis to offer more cockpit space

BAC Mono gets a new wider chassis to offer more space in the cockpit. Exterior dimensions, weight and aerodynamics remain unchanged, as does the Mono’s trademark blistering performance and handling

MONO XL

BAC

has continued its approach of constant improvement and turned up the style in the cockpit of its bespoke Mono supercar, while a new wider chassis has added a generous amount of extra space. The chassis has been redesigned, to move the sides of the tubular steel safety cell outwards, while new, slimmer side panels make even more of the changes.

The changes have come about thanks to BAC’s close relationship and ongoing communication with its customers. The re-engineering of the chassis brings 25mm of extra space on either side, while the new panels bring another 3mm on both sides of the driver. Overall, this means there is now a total of 56mm extra width in the Mono’s cockpit. However, the changes are all under the surface of the Mono, meaning that the car’s exterior dimensions remain the same. As a result, the Mono’s precisely engineered aerodynamics are unchanged, as are the car’s phenomenal handling abilities. The breath-taking performance levels are also untouched by the changes, so the Mono retains its 2.8sec 0-60mph time, and top speed of 170mph. Customers also now have the option of new side panels, which are made from visible carbon fibre, and make the most of the available space. The bespoke attention to detail continues elsewhere in the cockpit, with each buyer getting a custom-fitted driver’s seat and steering wheel. BAC co-founder Ian Briggs said: “Every change we make to the Mono is aimed at improving it for our customers, and this upgrade is intended to make the most of the space for the driver. Thanks to the close relationship we enjoy with our customers, we are in regular dialogue with them and this change has come as a result of this. The changes will widen the appeal of the Mono, particularly as we expand into new markets such as America and the Far East.” The new, wider chassis Mono will be on sale from summer 2016.

MONO XL

Bespoke sports car manufacturer BAC (Briggs Automotive Company) is based in Liverpool and was co-founded by brothers Ian and Neill Briggs. It produces the Mono sports car, a single-seater formula style car that provides a visceral and exhilarating driving experience. The 2016 model year version of the Mono comes with an allnew four-cylinder 305bhp 2.5-litre Mountune engine, which takes the 580kg car from 0-60mph in just 2.8sec. It made its global debut at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

successful results reported by the collector car auctions company Barrett-Jackson on Scottsdale (Arizona) on February 9, demonstrates the company’s dominance in the industry and the current state of the collector car hobby. With 1,469 cars selling for over $102 million (unaudited) at a 99-percent sell-through rate and many records set, 2016 Scottsdale Auction was the highest grossing auction during Scottsdale car week and one of the company’s most successful auctions in its 45-year history. “Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale was a spectacular success,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Our sell-through for such a large number of collector cars was truly prolific. Some might be tempted to compare our 2015 auction, which included the enormous Pratte Collection, but when the Pratte Collection sales are factored out, our 2016 results proved stronger than what we did in 2015.”

In 2015, rather than holding a stand-alone auction for a private collection like many auction houses have done, Barrett-Jackson added an extra day to include the 141 Pratte Collection vehicles as a part of the flagship event. Excluding the Pratte Collection results in 2015, Barrett-Jackson saw a more than a 6-percent growth in sales in Scottsdale this year with two fewer cars sold. Barrett-Jackson’s 45th Anniversary Scottsdale Auction set numerous published auction records for specific automobiles: • 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach- $1,760,000 (record for 2015 Porsche 918) • 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Worblaufen Cabriolet - $715,000 (record for 1947 cabriolet) • 1939 Talbot-Lago T-15 Cabriolet $550,000 (record for 1939 cabriolet) • 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Smokey and the Bandit Promo Car - $550,000 (record for any Trans Am) • 1992 Ferrari 512TR - $357,500 (record for a 512TR) • 1972 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 $192,500 (record for 1972 ZR1) • 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am $187,000 (record for 1979 Pontiac) • 1962 Dodge Power Wagon M37B1 $187,000 (record for any Power Wagon) • 1944 Dodge Power Wagon Custom Pickup - $187,000 (record for any Power Wagon) “I’m proud to have kicked off our 45th Anniversary year with such a successful event,” added Jackson. “This growth demonstrates Barrett-Jackson’s ability to continually set the bar and serve as the barometer of car collecting. I look forward to the rest of the 2016 auction season, especially as we add the inaugural Northeast Auction to our portfolio.”

S PE C I A L The Andy Green’s Diary

THE ENGINEERING ADVENTURE Once again this month we publish the diary of Wing Commander of the UK RoyalAir Force, Andy Green. Green is the current world landspeed record holder (763 mph in 1997 with the Thrust SSC) and is destined to change the history by attempting the new record with the Bloodhoud Project and focused around 1000 mph. * From Commander Andy Green Blog on The BLOODHOUND Project

THE ENGINEERING ADVENTURE

While

we’re working steadily to get BLOODHOUND SSC ready for its first runs, our ‘Engineering Adventure’ continues to captivate young audiences. Part of exploring the science and technology is to do-it-yourself, so it’s no surprise that our Model Rocket Car Challenge is in huge demand. The idea for this goes back to 2011, when Joseph Leckie Community Technical College set a new Guinness World Record, for model rocket cars, at a very impressive 88.9 mph. That’s almost 90 mph in the school playground! (and yes, they did do a risk assessment first). It was also a huge challenge to every other school out there – and so the competition idea was born. The BLOODHOUND Model Rocket Car Competition has 4 classes, ranging from Class 1 (under 11s, small rocket, 25m track) to Class 4 (‘Unlimited’: anyone in full-time education, any age, any number of rockets). The Unlimited record now stands at an unbelievable 533.1 mph (well done to the current world record holders, Joseph Whitaker School in Mansfield). Recently I heard that someone is now designing a model to achieve 900 mph – blimey. I’m more convinced than ever that the first ‘BLOODHOUND’ Car to go supersonic will be in a school playground somewhere…. To understand the effect that this challenge is having on young people, you just have to listen to them. A young lady called Zoe, part of the Joseph Whitaker team (World Record holders!) summed it up: “I want to get into engineering in the future….I’d heard about

BLOODHOUND and was watching BLOODHOUND over and over again on YouTube. I think everyone’s going to be watching [the record attempt] – it’s going to be amazing”. That’s the ‘BLOODHOUND effect’ in action. Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, we ran a number of ‘Rocket Car Experiences’, to give our young supporters a taste of model rocket car racing. These one-day events included a tour of the BLOODHOUND Technical Centre to have a look at the real thing, before building and racing your own rocket car. Not surprisingly, we were hugely over-subscribed, with over 400 ‘young’ visitors (the oldest was actually 87) coming to see us. Thanks to the huge demand we’re now holding Rocket Car Experiences during every school holiday, run by the tirelessly enthusiastic Rob Bennett (on behalf of the hundreds of young people you’ve excited and inspired already, thank you Rob).

THE ENGINEERING ADVENTURE A few months ago we invited a well-known motoring magazine to come and take part in one of our Rocket Car Challenge days, at Pimlico Academy. To give them a good chance, we sent them a kit of parts (wheels, axles, foam block for the body, etc.) several days in advance. Despite this, the journalist turned up on the day with a ‘finished’ car that looked like a house brick on wheels. Looking round at all the carefully thought-out and well-engineered solutions from the pupils he was going to be racing, this distinguished journalist was heard to mutter ‘Oh dear, I think I’ve rather underestimated this one’. Indeed he had. The AutoCar effort (yes, it was them) was a good 20 mph slower than the winning student car. To give AutoCar some credit, the magazine is keen to have another go…

Like Land Speed Racing, the Model Rocket Car challenge seems simple enough at first glance. Take a block of modelling foam, 2 axles, 4 wheels. Design and make your optimum chassis shape. Attach the wheels and the metal loops for the guide wire (a key safety feature – not all of these cars run dead straight!). We then fit a small ‘Estes’ rocket into the pre-drilled hole in the back end of the chassis, attach the battery wires, press the button and….whooosh. Anything between 29 and 53 mph, based on the groups we had recently. This seems like a big speed range, so what makes the difference between a journalist-designed house brick and a 50+ mph winner? There’s a lot to think about, which is what makes the challenge so interesting. Thrust, mass,

drag and stability all make a difference, just like the real Land Speed Record. First the thrust. It’s the same fixed amount for all the cars: for the ‘Rocket Car Experience’ days, we use the BLOODHOUND Challenge ‘Class 2’ regulations, with a 50 metre wire and a ‘B6-0’ Estes rocket. The thrust curve for the ‘B’ rocket shows the rocket burning for about 0.85 seconds, which is when the car’s speed is at its peak. In theory, the fastest car will be the one that hits the time trap just as the rocket motor burns out. In practice we use a radar gun, which measures the peak speed over the last few metres of the run, so we can largely ignore the thrust profile. The mass of the model is much more important. The lighter the model, the faster the car will accelerate and the higher the peak speed. For example, a mass of 200 g under the average rocket thrust of 6 N will give you an acceleration of 3 G (3 times the force of gravity, which is the equivalent of 0-60 mph in one second). If you can reduce the mass of the vehicle to 150 g then you’ll get a 4 G acceleration – much better. There is a limit to how much foam you can cut away, though. Of course, a theoretical 3 G acceleration (60 mph in one second) will not get you anywhere near 60 mph, because your other big enemy is drag, which can (and will) reduce the acceleration dramatically. For example, the shape of the car will affect the aerodynamic drag. If this doesn’t seem important, try putting your hand out of a car window at 60 mph, and compare the (high) drag force when your hand is flat to the wind and the (much lower) force when it’s edge-on. This drag effect will make a big difference to the way your lightweight rocket car runs.

THE ENGINEERING ADVENTURE To make it bit more complicated, aerodynamics is not the only source of drag. The wheels and axles are another key area. If you just poke the axles through the foam block it will work after a fashion, but if you use axle tubes (plastic drinking straws, for instance) it works soooo much better. The other thing to think about is stability. If the car is running dead straight, barely touching the guide wire and skimming across the ground, it will be going as fast as it can. Bouncing around, or having crooked wheels pulling off to one side, will waste a lot of energy. Stability is a huge and complicated subject, often best solved by trial and error. Will a tail fin make your rocket car more stable? Try it and find out! Given the fixed thrust, what is the most important – drag, mass or stability? The simple answer is mass (but don’t tell anyone else, this is your race-winning secret). For the very short burn time of the Estes rocket, acceleration is affected more by mass than anything else, so get carving, you’ve got to get rid of a fair chunk of foam block. If mass is so important, then why aren’t we trying to make BLOODHOUND SSC as light as possible? For Land Speed Record cars, there are a couple of important differences. With much higher speeds, the drag factor is much higher. BLOODHOUND is planning to travel at 1000 mph, about 20 times as fast as a model rocket car. Drag goes up with the square of the speed – so the drag will be about 400 times higher at 1000 mph than it is at 50. Hence keeping the drag low for BLOODHOUND SSC is more important than being very light. Stability and structural strength are also vital, so we need to have a Car that is built to take the most extreme loads it will encounter, with a big safety margin.

Speaking as BLOODHOUND’s driver, this is really important. This balance of thrust vs strength vs mass is the challenge faced by all Land Speed Record teams. I saw an interesting figure recently, about the mass of the engine vs the mass of the whole car, which I’m still thinking about. Since 1963, the fastest cars have all been jet powered, with some very different designs, ranging from the single-engined American cars of the 1960s to the twin-engined 10-tonne monster Thrust SSC, which still holds the record today (but not for much longer…). Surprisingly, given how different all these cars were, the jet engine(s) make up roughly 3040% of the car’s mass, seemingly regardless of shape or design. Is this a design facet of jet-powered record cars, or just a coincidence? I’m not sure. What surprised me was doing the same sum for BLOODHOUND SSC. BLOODHOUND will weigh in at about 6300 kg empty, including 1200 kg of EJ200 jet engine and 1000 kg of rocket system, which makes a total of… 35% of the Car’s mass. That’s the same as many of the previous cars, but there’s one big difference. BLOODHOUND is designed to do 1000 mph, and going this much faster requires a much stronger chassis and bodywork, which (you might reasonably expect) would be heavier. The surprise is that BLOODHOUND has kept that same mass ratio as previous generations. The BLOODHOUND engineers have done a remarkable job of finding Mark Chapman’s ‘balance between strength and lightness’. At the same time, they are doing something perhaps more important – they are helping to share their ‘Engineering Adventure’ with the next generation.
