Michelle Rodriguez reaches 201 mph in the Jaguar F-TYPE SVR
Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez drives the new Jaguar F-TYPE SVR to 201 mph. The Hollywood actress’ speed test took place on the world’s fastest road race location in the Nevada desert, USA.”

The
new Jaguar F-TYPE SVR, the fastest production Jaguar ever, has been put through its first high speed test drive with Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez at the wheel. On a closed highway in the Nevada desert, home to the world’s fastest road race the Silver State Classic Challenge, the actress pushed the car to its top speed with the speedometer indicating 201mph - a personal top speed for Michelle. Michelle Rodriguez said: “Driving this car was insane! I’ve now broken my personal speed record in the beautiful Jaguar F-TYPE
SVR. Reaching 201mph felt amazing, the car drove really smoothly, all my corrections were minimal, I was super focused, and it really reacted in all the right ways. I don’t think I’d ever go this fast without a professional driver seated next to me, but oh man, it was an incredible feeling. I’ve always wondered what it was like to travel faster than my top speed of 140mph and, outside of the Autobahn, it’s impossible for me to do it safely anywhere else and safety is most important to me. It was refreshing to be able to take myself beyond my limitations, going that fast is a big responsibility but the experience in this car was more graceful than anything I’ve felt before.”
Developed by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations to be lighter, quicker, faster and more powerful while remaining useable day-to-day, the F-TYPE SVR is Jaguar’s ultimate performance vehicle. John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, said: “Building upon the award-winning F-TYPE was a challenging objective. Everything in terms of handling, design, sound and performance had to be taken to a new level, and is what the new F-TYPE SVR delivers. It is a 200mph all-weather supercar, but above all one that is designed to be driven every day.”

Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder by Touring
WHAT A BEAUTY! Touring turns ninety and celebrates this important anniversary with a brand new car. A bold interpretation of the open top car, fully devoted to the pleasure of riding with wind tousling one’s hair. The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder is a two-seater open top car, based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider. It is built for discerning customers in just seven examples, more than half of which have been sold already
W H AT A B E A U T Y !
“This
is the first open top production car in Touring’s recent history” says Louis de Fabribeckers, Head of Design “As such it had to be a bold design statement which starts to outline Touring’s future design language. The 1952 car was revolutionary. The Disco Volante Spyder is as astonishing and exciting as a coach built car should be. We did not want to compromise the pleasure of driving open top. This car is designed as if there was no roof at all. Our idea was that the new project should be dynamic, fast and circular, without being aggressive”. The windscreen is low, sharp edged, without a visible top frame. This gives lightness and a more dynamic look to the car. The uninterrupted razor sharp edge continues through the side windows and fairings, encircling the whole car with a seamless and exciting trait. The fairings’ design certainly draws inspiration from the old Disco Volante and the aerodynamic approach which it expressed. In the present Spyder this concept is made extreme. The fairings are not a discrete element, rather they elongate the horizontal line of the windscreen, giving a surprising “streamlined” effect to the car. Touring Superleggera is synonymous with the manufacture of lightweight bodywork. The weight advantage of aluminium is one of the assets of Touring Superleggera’s construction methods. Nowadays however, the crafted hand-beaten aluminium panels are widely combined with carbon fibre.
W H AT A B E A U T Y !
Touring Superleggera is recognized worldwide as one of the iconic names in Italian car design and coachbuilding. Founded by Felice Bianchi Anderloni and Gaetano Ponzoni in 1926, the company started to produce custom built automotive bodywork with two distinctive features from the very beginning: sporting elegance and lightness.
W H AT A B E A U T Y !
Touring therefore decided to apply an innovative twin carbon roof allowing the car to have all the protection of a true coupé. This design allows for other advantages too: beauty, lightness and practicality. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider was chosen as donor car for its light and stiff structure and its outstanding dynamic properties. It forms the perfect basis for the coachbuilt bodywork of the Disco Volante Spyder, which integrally conserves the rolling chassis and drive train. Since torsional stiffness is of critical importance, an intensive study with FEM calculations was carried out in cooperation with Alfa Romeo to design the new single-piece windscreen frame and the cross roll-bar piece. Together with the roof, they are made from structural carbon fibre. The ensemble provides crucial torsional stiffness advantages and saves weight in the upper section of the car, where it is most beneficial for performance.
Faithful to its philosophy of personalisation, Touring provides a bespoke set-up of suspensions to match each customer’s preference. The layout of the front-central mounted engine, the transaxle transmission and the rear-wheel drive offer an optimal weight distribution of 49-51% between the front and rear axles. The lightweight and compact 4.7 litre V8 engine delivers 450HP and 480Nm peak torque. It is coupled with a six-speed sequential transaxle gearbox with electronic control and paddle-shift gear selection. Combined with a limited-slip differential and a stateof-the-art carbon-ceramic braking system including large diameter, ventilated discs, the package ensures a precise, dynamic and proactive drive. The Disco Volante Spyder can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4,5 seconds and has a top speed of approximately 292 Km/h (181 mph).
The term “Spider” is widely used for a two-seat open top car, but the term “Spyder” does not exist in the English dictionary. In the Sixties though the Italian car designers felt the misspelled term would be more exotic and appealing. Touring deliberately choose to respect the “Italian touch” as a homage to the Italian coachbuilders’ tradition.
W H AT A B E A U T Y !
The price of the Disco Volante Spyder is on demand. Touring Superleggera delivers the complete car six months after the donor Alfa Romeo 8C Spider is made available. All Touring-produced or modified parts have a two-year unlimited-mileage warranty, subject to the usual industry terms. Alfa Romeo dealers are qualified for maintenance and service of the technical components, while Touring supplies repair instructions and parts for the Touring-designed components and systems.
W H AT A B E A U T Y !
The Disco Volante Spyder is inspired by the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52. Presented at the 1953 New York Motor Show the C52 had gained the Disco Volante nickname, Italian for ‘Flying Saucer’. Once again, Touring had sparked the public’s imagination with a groundbreaking shape on what was the eve of space age.

Paying homage to the original 124 Spider nearly 50 years after its introduction, the Fiat 124 Spider delivers the ultimate Italian roadster experience with driving excitement, technology and safety combined with iconic Italian design
F I AT 1 2 4 S P I D E R
The
new Fiat 124 Spider, designed at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, borrows cues from the original 1966 Spider - widely considered one of Fiat’s most beautiful cars of all time - and reinterprets them for today. With its timeless low-slung presence, the Fiat 124 Spider features a classically beautiful bodyside with well-balanced proportions and a sporty cabin-to-hood ratio. A horizontal line emerges from the front fender, kicks up over the rear fender and flows toward the rear headlamp, an interpretation of the historical 124 Spider’s body. The upper grille has a hexagonal shape, inspired by the unique shape of the original 124 Spider’s front air intake. A hexagonal grille pattern emphasizes this shape and echoes the sporty honeycomb mesh on the grille of the original 124 Spider. The interior is crafted and designed to focus on the occupants, with premium soft-touch materials throughout. Ergonomics were applied to emphasize the driving experience and ensure easy operation of the steering wheel, pedals and shifter while driving. The Fiat 124 Spider is available in two trim levels: 124 Spider and Lusso. Each model is available in 8 exterior paint colors. The Fiat 124 Spider is available with the proven 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine, the engine’s first application in a rearwheel-drive vehicle. The engine, delivers 140 horsepower and 240 Nm. of torque, and is available with a six-speed manual transmission. Vehicle is equipped with an high permeability intake system able to minimize intake air pressure drop and a front-mounted intercooler, designed to effectively cool the compressed air, positively affecting either the in cylinder trapped air (increasing the air density) or the combustion efficiency reducing the knock risk.
Vice command: an in-vehicle, voice-activated communication system that allows drivers to operate a Bluetooth-compatible phone with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. When the Bluetooth phone is initially connected, the contact list is automatically downloaded, synchronizing phone book entries, which can then be selected by simply saying a contact name. It also allows drivers to switch radio mode and tune to AM/FM radio and Digital Audio Broadcast.

This high reliability engine 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission allow exciting performance all-over engine speed range. The 124 Spider’s six-speed manual transmission is a six-speed gearbox that features a simple structure and compact, lightweight design. Its die-cast aluminum housing and materials used contribute to its lighter weight. The 124 Spider’s suspension uses a double-wishbone layout in front and a multilink in the rear, specifically tuned for greater stability while braking and turning. Steering is light and responsive with the use of an electric power assist (dual pinion) system. The steering and suspension setup, lightweight frame, balanced weight distribution and turbocharged engine combine for a dynamic driving experience. Noise vibration and harshness enhancements, including an acoustic front windshield and insulation treatments, also help to deliver a refined, quiet ride. The Fiat 124 Spider’s body structure applies the basic concept of using straight beams and creating a continuous framework wherever possible so the various individual sections function in harmony. In addition, the use of aluminum and high-tensile steel provides safety and rigidity, producing a lightweight open-top body that responds briskly to a driver’s will. The straight high-mount backbone frame for the front tunnel section and the large cross section contribute to build a strong structure. In addition, the subframe and crossmembers connect to the backbone to the front and rear sections which help to provide a structure that is lightweight, safe and highly rigid. Driving performance is enhanced by the application of aluminum parts on the body and chassis. Components made of aluminum include the hood and trunk lid, front and rear

The result is a high-strength body with high rigidity and light weight. A variety of measures were implemented on the body structure, and the materials provide good absorption of impact energy.
An open-air driving experience is effortless with the Fiat 124 Spider’s easy-to-operate soft top. By examining the natural path the driver’s hand takes when opening and closing the top and how the driver can most easily apply the force required, the operation of the top is optimized. An assist spring supports the driver’s action when raising the top from the fully open position, making the force required minimal. This optimization saves weight by eliminating the need for power assist system.

WHO’S CALLING THE SHOTS?
www.enricozanarini.com
ENRICO’S NOTEPAD Enrico Zanarini is one of the most expert and successful managers of the Formula 1circus. Since the mid 80s he’s playing a primary role in the paddock by supporting the career of drivers as Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella, Vitantonio Liuzzi just to mention a few. Enrico also manages the activity of important sponsors as he’s at the head of one of the main international sport/management agency. He has recently started writing his reflections about Formula 1 on his own blog and he has also accepted to publish the more interesting thoughts on RACE GLOBALMAG. We are happy to host his “behind the scenes” insights and truly free point of view, even if sometimes these don’t perfectly match the RGM point of view.

Lewis and Nico at the end of the race… old games mates
As at the end of the 2015 Championsip Nico Rosberg did the perfect job in Australia: pole position and victory. And now the pressure is on Hamilton’s shoulders Pictures Mercedes Amg Petronas Formula One Team
first Formula One GP of the year is over. A plentiful week-end, enriched by a great race of action and drama. A brilliant start of the season with drivers and teams called to forceful and decision making performances. Two inevitable doubts shall remain: would Ferrari have won the race without the red flag? And again: could Vettel have kept the leadership of the pack had he fitted the medium tyre to his “Margherita” after the stoppage? My personal opinion does not count as it is not supported by the proper data. However, you can bet all the coins in your pocket that Ferrari will simulate both scenarios in Maranello this week and that they will be first to find the correct answers. However, not all that surfaced during this event was positive. The shameful spectacle of the new qualifying system has convinced the Teams to an embarrassing retreat and to a return to the “future” past. Horrible to see drivers out of their cars when the clock is still sentencing their own elimination...right? It’s somehow watching warriors conceiving defeat before the duel is over. Have FOM and FIA ever heard of simulation? Did anyone of the decision makers figured out, with supportive data, what the outcome of the new procedure was going to be? I have heard Formula One Teams claiming that it was a simple an straight forward exercise. My first question is: is anybody (up there) capable of calling the shots in the proper manner? And my second: now that Fernando has “simulated” pretty accurately how the Halo would have made it impossible for him to exit his car after that horrendous crash, will anybody (up there) suggest to abolish that silly-looking and now certain to be limited-in-security device?
WHO’S CALLING THE SHOTS?
Daniel Ricciardo: “Today was fun for me, it was so good to be back racing. I came on the radio more than once expressing my joy to just being out there competing. That joy was emphasized by having a good car underneath me. At the start we were able to pick cars off. We had good pace with high fuel on the option and it was fun to be able to pass cars, I was enjoying that as always. I was sitting in a podium spot towards the end and I was hoping the tyres would last but I knew they weren’t going to hold and I would have to pit again. But fourth is still a good result and I’m happy we’re not that far off Mercedes and Ferrari. It was also good to see that Fernando and Esteban are okay. I haven’t watched the replay yet but I saw the car upside down so I knew it wasn’t a small accident.” Red Bull Contentpool Clive Mason/Getty Images
WHO’S CALLING THE SHOTS?
Sebastian Vettel: “I obviously had a great start, I was very happy to see that I had a better start than the two cars in front of me, reminding me of Hungary last year and it worked out. It was great to see that Kimi made it as well, so we got first and second and from there we dictated the pace. The red flag didn’t help us, but to be fair the most important thing was that Fernando and Esteban were alright. It was the right decision to stop the race. First time I went through I saw the debris on the track. Naturally the expectations are higher when you had a strong season last year and you wanted to close the gap. Yesterday we were a bit further away and today we were closer. In general it was a great race, I was racing flat out until to the end, I didn’t want to go onto the grass but I did the lawn mower! So I don’t have to do it next week when I go home, but for sure we would have liked more from today.” Picture copyright Ferrari

A sincere interview with the Argetinian driver able to dominate the last two seasons of the World Touring Cars Championship
PE CHI TO !
by Vittorio Gargiulo
With
more than 1.3 million inhabitants, Córdoba is located in the center of Argentina, in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas on the Suquía River. If Cordoba is well known as one of the oldest towns in Argentina, packed of historical monuments, its Province is renowned for the extraordinary mountains landscape. To live so close to the mountains has usually the consequence that a young motorsport fan dreams of becoming a rally champion … but not our hero. Born and raised no far from Cordoba, in Rio Tercero, Jose Maria Lopez fell in love with speed and motors when he first drove a go-kart, at just 7 years old. From that moment “Pechito” just saw circuits. Ok, but why “Pechito”? “Football for us is the main sport and, when a team is not playing well, the crowd usually say ‘Pecho Frio’ (literally ‘cold chest’ this Spanish expression is used in sport with the meaning of passionless, when a team is not giving its best). When my father was racing as an amateur, he used to leave work to go organize races since he had a great passion for motor racing. At one particular meeting, things were not going particularly well with the other organizers and he left. But just before leaving he said: “Son todo uno pechio frio”. After that they began calling him pechio, and I was stuck with the nickname Pechito… But be sure I am not a ‘cold chest’!”
PECHITO! What does it mean for an Argentinian driver to become World Champion? “Personally it means a lot. Somehow it is achieving the maximum you could ever achieve in Touring Cars. For me it was very important, winning the championship, coming back to Europe with a new team, Citroen. After Juan Manuel Fangio and Carlos Reutemann Argentinian never had the opportunity to come back to the top level of motorsport even though motorsport is very important, it is the second sport after football. Of course it’s not the Formula 1 World Championship, but it is an FIA World Championship and I think we are back in business.”
PECHITO! Now you are very popular back home … “Well I was known already before leaving the country because, as I told you, motorsport is very popular. Now you can say I am a national hero because all the Argentinian people rally behind the national flag in sports and I represent it in the world.“ When did you start racing? And what were you dreaming about for your career? “First time I raced was in a go-kart at seven years old. At the beginning the focus was on Formula 1, it was my dream. I came close to Formula 1 between 2006 and 2010 and I learned a lot in that period of my career. Maybe I wasn’t in the right place at the right moment, maybe I did some mistakes but I don’t regret that period. It was good experience for me.” Then you were close to ending your career … “I had some stalls, but every little thing that happened made me stronger. I understood lots of things about motorsport and I am now enjoying racing much more, because when you are young at the beginning of a career everyone is a rival, and if you are not strong enough some things can get a little bit too tough and it is difficult to stop and enjoy the moment. Now I am doing that, I remain competitive, I don’t like to lose and I enjoy where I am.”
PECHITO! Now that you are World Champion in your category, do you have any new objective or you believe this is the top you can achieve? “When you think about it in general, it is never enough. But I want to enjoy the moment right now. My head is focused on the 2016 season.” Your friend Sebastien Loeb is a good example, with new challenges every year … “He is definitely an inspiration for me but he is also unique. I couldn’t do everything he does, but he is an example of new challenges and is capable in adapting to everything. I think a driver has to be like this.” You are from Cordoba, why not try the DAKAR? “Being from Cordoba is actually strange not to be a rally driver. I have done some shakedowns and I really like it but I prefer the track. I really like rally but I like to be competitive and I don’t think I would be competitive in rallies today.” Do you see any young Argentinian driver that could follow your career and have a good international career? “I think there is plenty of good Argentinian drivers. But the problem for the people in my country is that it is very difficult to race abroad so we end up all racing in Argentina in very competitive national championships.
PECHITO! In some cases, like that of Facundo Regalia who fought for the GP3 championship, we can make it, but it is very difficult in motor racing because it is very expensive and you need the support at least at the start of a career in order to show your potential.” What about the 2016 WTCC season? “It looks like it will be an interesting season, with new cars and quite a few changes among the drivers. The rule changes will also modify the approach to a race weekend. I think that the ‘team spirit’ will be more important than ever before. Yvan and I have worked closely together for two years and we have forged a relationship built on mutual respect and the goal to take Citroën to the top. We looked to make progress this winter, but now it is hard to improve a car as successful as the Citroën C-Elysée WTCC.. It will be even more complicated for us, especially with the 80kg of ballast that we will carry at the start of the championship. Everyone seems to expect us to continue to win, but I think the competition will be stiffer.” Last question: do you think friendship possible in the paddock? Between teammates? “I think it is important to “keep things separated”. When you are on track the other drivers are just competitors you want to beat, even your teammates are just rivals. But when races are over and when you are off-track, then you can have and must have friendly relationships with other drivers. Even between Muller and me there was some tension at the beginning, but then we understood each other and were able to “keep things separated” and today our relationship is excellent.”

A 100-year-old Ford Model T is on a challenge to drive around the world Pictures Š Ford Motor Company
I T ’ S A L O N G WAY …
Dirk
and Trudy Regter from the Netherlands have owned their 1915 Ford Model T since 1997, and began their journey in the summer of 2012. The couple, both retired, have so far covered almost 50,000 miles, visiting and supporting various projects run by the international children’s aid organisation: SOS – Children’s Villages. The Ford Model T covered 14,000 miles in 180 days during the first leg of the drive in 2012, which took them from their home town of Edam, to Cape Town in South Africa.
In 2013 the couple drove through the USA and Canada, crossing 22 States during their 17,000-mile, 180-day road trip. In 2014 they ticked off another 16,000 miles through South America in a further 180 days. Sadly, the Model T was involved in an accident when it returned to Europe. However, the couple plan to continue their journey through New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, and India, crossing the Himalayas to China, through Mongolia and back to the Netherlands via Central Europe during 2016 and 2017. Dirk previously owned a 1923 Ford Model T and a 1928 Ford Model A, inheriting his passion for vintage Fords from his father and grandfather. Ford built 15,000,000 Model Ts between 1908 and 1927. Production started in the US but quickly expanded worldwide, including assembly plants in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Spain and at Trafford Park in the UK. The Ford Model T helped put the world on wheels, and owed its mass appeal to its affordability, reliability and ease of maintenance with standard, interchangeable parts. The Regters’ Ford Model T is powered by a 3.0-litre petrol engine and is unaltered from its standard 1915 factory specification. The single exception is larger tyres for the woodenspoked wheels, making the ride softer for long journeys. “On the border of South Africa and Botswana we met a farmer who had an old Ford Model T in the shed”, Dirk said. “He gave us a tyre off it as a gift to help us on our way. In Africa we had to weld a broken front wheel at the local blacksmith. I’m pretty handy, and a screwdriver, hammer, some duct tape, tie wraps and tensioning straps go a long way.”

It
seems almost unbelievable that an example of one of the great pre-war cars, a straight eight supercharged Alfa Romeo of the type that won Le Mans four times and the Mille Miglia three times, could be lost from sight for many, many decades only to be discovered about five years ago. Even more amazing the long term owner, who is approaching his personal century, received the car as a 21st birthday present from his father back in 1937. An incredible story but absolutely true! The car, chassis and engine number 2211079, was bodied in France by the coachbuilding firm of Figoni, the only short chassis to be bodied by that famous house. It was completed in time for first owner Mr Weinberg to compete in the ParisNice rally in March 1933, an event in which he competed in 1934 as well. According to the existing French registration records the car passed to Count Francois de Bremond in May 1935 and he ran the Grossglockner Hillclimb that year finishing 5th in class. He may have used it for other competitions but he sold it in August 1937. The agent or broker in the sale was Luigi Chinetti who was then resident in Paris but later became the first agent for Ferrari in North America based in Greenwich, Connecticut. The new owner had just graduated and his father gave him the car as a present – and he owned the car for over 70 years. During the war, it was hidden from the occupying forces and used for some years after the war before being garaged but well looked after until being acquired by the current owner. The car was then taken to restoration specialist Blakeney Motorsport in the UK a year and a half ago. The car has not been restored but has been made safe to run as far as the engine, fuel system, dry sump oil system, brakes, steering, electrics and so on are concerned. An absolutely fantastic story.

German consumers recently took part in comparative vehicle tests as part of an interesting survey about electronic suspension. Tenneco published the results of this survey that shows that consumers experience a feeling of increased comfort, control and safety when driving cars equipped with intelligent (electronically-adjusted) suspension systems versus the same cars equipped with conventional suspension systems. The survey has been conducted for Tenneco by TNS Infratest, one of the world leader in market research. The 94% of sports utility vehicle (SUV) drivers rated the overall driving experience with a semi-active suspension system as very good or excellent, compared with a rating of 73% for passive suspension systems. In the compact car (CC) segment, 86% of drivers rated their overall driving experience as very good or excellent compared with 61% for passive systems, while 88% of upper middle class (UMC) segment drivers rated semi-active suspension systems as very good or excellent versus 77% for passive systems. Tenneco’s MonroeŽ Intelligent Suspension technology continuously adjusts shock absorber damping levels to road conditions and vehicle dynamics such as speed, turning, cornering and other driver inputs to achieve an optimal balance between ride comfort and vehicle handling. The system can be switched from standard to sport or comfort mode at any time according to driver preferences without impacting vehicle dynamics. The most significant improvement with intelligent suspension systems reported across all segments was vehicle comfort with road holding, stability, agility, control and safety all scoring strongly versus conventional systems. In addition, the ability to change the suspension mode at will resulted in a strong increase in scores for flexibility and driving fun versus conventional systems.
C O M F O RT A N D S A F E T Y “Our test results confirm that intelligent suspension systems deliver benefits that consumers notice and prefer; notably that there is no need to compromise between ride comfort and handling,” said Sandro Paparelli, Vice President & General Manager, Tenneco Ride Performance Europe. “Consumers clearly feel that intelligent systems reconcile these differences to give drivers the pleasure of both, and they value the ability to vary their ride at the touch of a button.” When evaluating intelligent suspension systems, 39% of compact car segment drivers said it should be standard in vehicles in all segments from compact class and above. In the SUV segment, 38% of drivers said it should be standard from middle-class vehicles and above. In both segments, drivers were willing to pay a higher price for vehicles incorporating intelligent suspension systems. After driving both vehicles with and without intelligent systems, the purchase intention rate across all segments was 47%. “By making vehicles capable of adapting to different environments, situations or ride preferences, intelligent suspension systems provide consumers with alternatives. They respond to today’s consumers who value both comfort and performance, and the freedom to choose their driving experience,” Paparelli concluded. Following the consumer survey, a series of quantitative tests by TÜV SÜD using vehicles equipped with Monroe® Intelligent Suspension confirmed better wheel to road contact, which helps avoid sideslip and oversteer, especially during cornering on uneven road surfaces. In more dynamic driving situations, such as lane changes or obstacle avoidance, the reduction in body movement was found to bring greater stability, which helps increase the feeling of comfort and safety.

Clay Sculpting Carves its Role in the Digital Age
The physical

Classic artisan techniques inspire contemporary Buick Avista concept
THE PHYSICAL FORM
The
collaborative energy inside the Buick design studio shows how proven artistic methods and cutting-edge technology work together to create beautiful vehicles. Interior designers of the award-winning Buick Avista were tasked with creating an interior of equal beauty to the exterior. While sketching and refining the door in digital mockups they reached the point where they wanted to see it in physical form. They gave the detailed sketch to the clay sculptors and left the next step in their hands. For a designer, the transition from 2D to 3D is the moment of truth. “We are really fortunate to work with such a talented team of sculptors,” said Aaron Stich, creative designer for Buick. “They brought the design to life in a way we never could have imagined; it was absolutely inspiring to see how they interpreted what we had done with pen and paper. This is what it’s like in the Buick studio right now, there’s so much energy, and everyone is itching to contribute. It’s fueling the creative renaissance of the brand.” Mark Dybis, creative sculptor, remembers his initial reaction when seeing the drawing of the door and quips that it reminded him of an M.C. Escher artwork. Dybis, who has spent the majority of his decade long career as an automotive sculptor in the Buick studios explained the lofty nature of making this proposed door design work.
“It was an amazing door design, but it was longer than we’re used to, so we knew we’d have to pay special attention to the curved lines to make the physical model look just as graceful as it did on the paper,” Dybis explains. “Our job is to bring the designers’ vision to life, and we know there are things that have to be considered when transitioning a drawing into the tangible world. In the end, I appreciate that a modern-looking car like the Avista, and all Buicks, are styled with time-honored methods like hand drawing and sculpting.” In developing a vehicle, designers use a variety of tools to achieve the perfect blend of form and function. While every new Buick begins as a sketch, refining the design entails a range of methods to achieve a specific
advantage or desired aesthetic. For example, clay sculpting by hand is unrivaled for the level of artistry and sophistication it brings to the surface detail while holograms and other digital 3D representations can help when considering how light reflects or how a car might look in different environments. “Concept cars stretch the imagination and inspire the direction our production portfolio is heading,” said Stich. “This door is just one example of how everyone in the Buick design studio is jumping at the chance to create designs that will stand the test of time and be more beautiful than the last. That’s how the collaborative process works – every iteration is an opportunity to outdo the one before it and create something so pleasing to the eye you can’t help but be amazed.”
THE PHYSICAL FORM
Buick is an international modern luxury brand offering vehicles with sculpted designs, luxurious interiors and thoughtful personal technologies, along with responsive-yet-efficient performance. Buick is at moment attracting a lot of new customers with its portfolio of luxury models in North America and China.
