AUTO NEWS

THE CHINESE STAGE

In its 15th year Auto Shanghai is without a doubt the most important automotive exhibition in China. And thanks to the fast-paced development of the Chinese automotive industry (with brands such as Great Wall, Chery and Qoros reaching the international market) Auto Shanghai has become one of the most influential auto shows in the world. Both domestic and overseas manufacturers gathered at the New International Expo Center in order to present new models mostly destined to Chinese families, the heart of the world’s fastest growing automotive market. In the following pages we bring you the reviews of all the cars unveiled for the first time.

ACURA

Concept SUV-X Acura exhibited the world premiere of a design concept model, the Acura Concept SUV-X, at Auto Shanghai 2013. It is a global concept vehicle for a small SUV developing primarily for the Chinese market. This is the first time for Acura to introduce the world premiere of a concept model outside of North America. Emotional and sharp styling and driving performance, together with the environmental performance of a small vehicle and excellent utility of an SUV are all fused together in this vehicle. Acura is planning to begin local production and sales in China of a mass-production model based on this concept vehicle for its market in about next three years.

AUDI

A3 Sedan S3 Sedan The Audi A3 Sedan’s design is a cross between the classic three-box concept and the coupé philosophy. The “tornado line” design element forms a distinct light-refracting edge that runs over the entire side. With a 1.4 TFSI engine, this sedan has a curb weight of just 1,250 kg (2,755.78 lb). Audi uses many hot-shaped steel parts in the passenger compartment for low weight and maximum strength, while the engine hood is made of aluminum. The body is very rigid, crash-safe and quiet. When the Audi A3 Sedan launches in Germany and Europe, the engine line-up will consist of three four-cylinder engines. In Germany and many European countries, the four-door car will be available at dealers late this summer. The base price for the 1.4 TFSI is around 25,000 euros. Just a few months after the launch of the new sedan model series, Audi will introduce the top model – the S3 Sedan. The 2.0 TFSI produces 221 kW (300 hp) and 380 Nm (280.27 lb ft) of torque.

This version of the Audi S3 Sedan, paired with the S tronic, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.9 seconds; with the manual transmission it takes 5.3 seconds. The car’s top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The four-cylinder turbo has a combined fuel consumption of just 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.09 US mpg) or 7.0 liters (33.60 US mpg) (with S tronic or manual transmission), respectively – for a CO2 equivalent of 159 or 162 grams per km (255.89 or 260.71 g/mile). Visually, the top model is distinguished by modifications to the bumpers, the singleframe grille, air intakes, exterior mirror housings, side sills and rear spoiler. The four oval tailpipes of the exhaust system are embedded in the diffuser with chrome trim. In the interior, the S3 Sedan offers sport seats (optional S sport seats), instruments with gray dials and trim strips in black 3D look.

BMW

Concept X4 Showcased for the first time in Shanghai the BMW Concept X4 offers a preview of the future of the BMW X family. The sporting character of the BMW Concept X4 is articulated by its dynamic linework as well as its proportions. With a body length of 4,648 mm, a wifth of 1,915 mm and a height of 1,622 mm, its exterior dimensions signal sporting elegance and powerful robustness. In addition to a long bonnet, short overhangs and set back passenger cell, its signature BMW features include a long wheelbase measuring 2,810 mm, while 21 inch light alloy wheels lend an

added flourish to the athletic bearing of this Sports Activity Coupe. The front-end styling of the BMW Concept X4 exudes hallmark BMW dynamics and the rugged purpose and presence of a BMW X model in equal measure. The most striking element at the back of the car is the rear apron, which provides a wide, full-length interpretation of the front apron’s large outer air intakes. The apron’s cut-out picks up the two exhaust tailpipes in a dynamic sweep before diverting the gaze to the wheels. Market launch is scheduled for as early as 2014.

DETROIT ELECTRIC

SP:01

Detroit Electric’s new high-performance electric sports car, the SP:01, received its global public reveal at the Shanghai Motor Show. A limited-edition, two-seat pure-electric sports car, the SP:01 sets a new benchmark for performance and handling in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. Boasting an impressive 155 mph (249 km/h) top speed and covering the 0-62mph (0-100km/ h) sprint in a blistering 3.7 seconds, the SP:01 is the world’s fastest pure-electric production car. The SP:01’s exceptional performance is owed in large part to its excellent power-to-weight ratio. The rearwheel-drive SP:01 features a compact, mid-mounted 201 bhp electric motor (delivering 166 lb ft of torque), a lightweight, purpose-designed battery pack and allnew carbon-fibre bodywork. Total weight is just 2,354 lb, contributing to the SP:01’s superior driving dynamics and class-leading handling. The vehicle is based on a strong yet lightweight aluminium platform, and is being launched following a five-

stion engine with that of the electric motor, allowing the Wild Rubis concept car to reach exceptional levels of performance (295hp), without compromising fuel consumption (43g/km of CO2). When accelerating sharply, or when grip is poor, the vehicle switches to 4WD mode, in which the electric motor drives the rear wheels and the internal combustion engine drives the front wheels. And when driving in particularly difficult conditions the driver can select forced 4WD mode. year development and road-test programme. To deliver instantaneous torque for breath-taking acceleration, the SP:01’s innovative powertrain creates an electromagnetic field around the rotor shaft, which then spins at varying speeds to drive the wheels. Drivers can select one of four gear ratios for optimal acceleration, but unlike a manual shift in a conventional car, there is little need to change gear regularly to ensure brisk progress. An all-disc braking system, coupled with ABS (anti-lock braking) and ESP (Electronic Stability Control) is fitted as standard, ensuring excellent stopping power. But it is the SP:01’s Regenerative Braking technology that sets the car apart, underpinning superb stopping performance while ensuring greater energy efficiency. The car’s energy recovery mechanism uses the motor as a generator, recovering kinetic energy when acceleration is interrupted and using it to recharge the vehicle’s battery packs, while imitating the retardation characteristics of a gasoline engine. With an impressive energy storage capacity of 37 kWh, the battery gives the SP:01 a range of almost 190 miles between recharges, when tested to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standard. Detroit Electric’s home charging unit will enable drivers to charge their SP:01, with full charge achieved in 4.3 hours. The SP:01 sports car is the first production vehicle to be marketed under the Detroit Electric brand since 1939. I twill be on sale in many of Detroit Electric’s target markets by end of August. The price of SP:01 starts at around 200,000 USD.

FORD

executive design director, Europe and Asia Pacific. “The Ford Escort Concept reflects those desires.” Ford designers started by adding length and then sculpting the vehicle with elegant lines to give it a natural flow. The longer profile creates more room for a comfortable and spacious interior while maintaining harmonious proportions. While being designed for the specific needs of this subsegment, the Ford Escort Concept is true to the new global face of Ford, which was introduced on the all-new Mondeo and made its first appearance on the Ford Evos Concept in 2011. On the Escort Concept, the slightly more upright grille and elongated, jeweled headlamps – carefully designed to resemble the lucky figure eight – provide a distinctive front end.

The global premiere of Haval H7 and Haval H6 Sport the highlight for Great Wall Motor’s independent brand. Haval H7 is an all-terrain hybrid quality SUV. The ample space with a wheelbase of 2,850mm, as well as intelligent equipment such as dualtemperature independent air conditioner, frontal anti-collision radar, reversing radar and rear camera will give the car a premium quality touch. Haval H6 Sport is robust and dynamic with chrome-plating grille, black wheel trims and window bars; the black-cream interior shows high taste with wood-grain and electro-plated ornaments, electric adjustable seats, atmosphere lamp and door sill lamp.

MASERATI

Ghibli

The Maserati presented the all-new Ghibli – the firstever mid-size four-door sports luxury sedan in Maserati’s history. The Ghibli’s design ethos emphasizes its more dynamic driving characteristics by maintaining visible links with the larger Quattroporte while delivering a more aggressive visual personality. The outline of the body reflects a coupe-like philosophy for the four-door sedan, while there are strong feline hints around the Ghibli’s grille and headlights. The grille takes its inspiration from the current GranTurismo and it can draw a line back to the classic A6 GCS of the 1950s. It also maintains Maserati’s distinctive C-pillar treatment, which delivers much of the coupe-like stance and carries the classical Saetta Maserati logo, carrying on a tradition dating back to 1963. The Ghibli will have a more-focused, sportier philosophy than the larger Quattroporte. It will be available with two turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 gasoline engines, an eight-speed automatic transmission and both rearwheel drive and the new Q4 all-wheel drive system. The most powerful of the V6s will be the twin-turbo unit in the Ghibli S, which produces 301kW (410hp) of power at 5500rpm and 550Nm of torque from just

1750rpm. This engine is shared between the rear-wheel drive Ghibli S and the all-wheel drive Ghibli S Q4. The second turbo-charged 3.0-litre V6 gasoline engine available on the Ghibli not only has an impressive power of 243kW (330hp) and 500Nm of torque, but delivers a fuel economy figure of just 9.6 litres/100km. It is much more than a fuel saving car, though, because itis capable of accelerating to 100km/h in just 5.6 seconds. The Ghibli will also become the first Maserati production car in history to be powered by a diesel engine, with a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel. The 3.0-litre turbo-charged V6 develops 202kW (275hp) of power and a crushing 600Nm of torque to deliver 0-100km/h acceleration in just 6.3 seconds. Critically, its NEDC fuel economy figure is less than 6.0 litres per 100km (less than 160 g/ Km of CO2).

MERCEDES-BENZ

E-Class Concept GLA

Mercedes-Benz is setting a clear course for sustainable growth in the key market of China. Tailor-made for the Chinese market is the new longwheelbase E-Class produced in Beijing. In another world first, Mercedes-Benz also presented the Concept GLA. The Concept GLA combines dynamic design and modern technology with a high degree of leisure value. Beneath the hood of the show car is the 155 kW (211 hp) two-litre turbocharged gasoline engine. Its power is transmitted by the innovative 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox to the extremely lightweight and compact 4MATIC all-wheel drive that Mercedes-Benz developed specifically for its new premium compact cars. The close-to-production study provides a preview of the forthcoming GLA-Class,

the compact premium SUV with the three-pointed star. And celebrating is market launch is the new A-Class, with which Mercedes-Benz now intends to attract new target groups in the Middle Kingdom, too. The new A-Class is also launching in China just a few months after making its highly successful debut on the European market.

MITSUBISHI

Concept G4 The Mitsubishi Concept G4 is a vision for a new compact sedan which Mitsubishi plans to roll out globally. The Concept G4 uses a high-clarity brilliant-cut diamond motif in the design of the front grille, headlamps and rear combination lamps to create a frontal visage with a commanding presence and a tail end which leaves a sharp impression as it drives off into the distance.

Concept G4 achieves fuel efficiency that is among the best in its class as its RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body - the lightest in its class due to the extensive use of high-tensile steel - is powered by a lightweight and compact 1.2-litre MIVEC engine mated to a CVT with sub-geartrain in addition to uncompromising weight reduction throughout.

MG

AUTO SHANGHAI 2013

MG3 MG has used the Shanghai Motor Show to preview the new MG3 supermini, in advance of the European launch later this year. Carrying forward the styling cues first illustrated on the MG ZERO concept vehicle, the new European MG3 is a distinctive statement of modern British style designed to target young and style conscious buyers, wanting something that’s fun to drive and own. The MG3 combines style and enjoyment with practical spaciousness. The designers and engineers have combined to create an exceptional amount of space and versatility in a very compact fivedoor package. Extensive work from the MG Design

and Engineering team on the architectural package has resulted in interior packaging that rivals or surpasses anything in its class. In a 4m long package, the MG3 will easily accommodate four individuals. The MG3’s ‘rolled and raised’ front dashboard design creates an airy forward cabin space and increased legroom, while allowing excellent access to primary and secondary controls. This theme is continued in the rear of the car, where the front seats are sculpted to allow rear passengers excellent space to travel in comfort. At the moment the MG3 is only powered by a 105 PS SOHC VTI-TECH engine.

NISSAN

Friend-ME Nissan revealed its Friend-ME concept, a fourpassenger sedan. The concept is applicable globally, but the genesis of Friend-ME was Nissan’s research into the aspirations of customers destined to emerge as the world’s largest single market segment: the “Blínghòu”, which is how around 240 million Chinese born in the 1980s are known. Specifically, Friend-ME addresses the social dynamics of Chinese men in their mid-20s. Friend-ME features a low and wide stance with short front and rear overhangs giving a chunky, aggressive and sporty impression. The design’s energy flows from the ‘V-motion’ shaped grille and streams through the bonnet and shoulder lines while the headlamps and rear combination lamps are accentuated by its unique boomerang-shaped lighting signature. Empowering all four passengers is a unique centre console stretching from the dash to between the rear seats. Screens visible from each seat blend seamlessly with the surface, only becoming apparent as they display whatever contents the passengers demands.

PORSCHE

Panamera S E-Hybrid Porsche celebrated the world premiere of the second generation Gran Turismo at the Auto Shanghai show in China. The new Panamera S E-Hybrid, the world’s first plug-in hybrid in the luxury class, is a systematically advanced development of the parallel full hybrid, which Porsche introduced to the market as a pioneer in the field. With 416 hp (306 kW) of system power, acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h, it is a Porsche Gran Turismo through and through. Its special fascination comes from its unique efficiency and its ability to drive considerable distances in all-electric mode. In the NEDC, the Panamera S E-Hybrid consumes 3.1 l/100 km, which equates to 71 g/km CO2 emissions. The

electric driving range of the Panamera S E-Hybrid was determined to be 36 kilometres in the NEDC, and its top speed in electric driving is an unrivalled 135 km/h. The electricity is stored in a newly developed lithium-ion battery with a 9.4 kWh energy capacity. Depending on the type of external electrical supply, the battery may be fully charged within as little as a few hours, and the battery is recharged by electrical system recuperation while driving.

ROLLS-ROYCE

Alpine Trial Centenary Collection

AUTO SHANGHAI 2013

The Shanghai Auto Show was the stage for the latest Bespoke Collection from Rolls-Royce. The Alpine Trial Centenary Collection celebrates an extraordinary moment in Rolls-Royce and automotive history. A century ago this June, four Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts embarked on the Austrian Alpine Trials, the most arduous test of automotive endurance of the time. In performing without fault over 1820 gruelling miles of near impassable mountain terrain, the Rolls-Royce works team and privateer entrant James Radley helped cement the marque’s reputation for peerless reliability and mechanical excellence, a reputation the company proudly retains today. This limited edition of Rolls-Royce Ghosts feature exquisitely crafted design cues that pay tribute to

these extraordinary motor cars. The exterior paint hue, for example takes close inspiration from Radley’s Silver Ghost. The Radley car’s distinct black grille and wheels are also replicated across the collection – the first time a painted grille has adorned a contemporary RollsRoyce motor car. The cabin plays host to Bespoke details that elegantly tell the story of the Alpine Trial. The clock displays the rally’s timing schedule, whilst inlays to rear picnic tables and the front fascia express the topography and distances of the Alpine route. Each element is meticulously hand-crafted and researched to ensure accuracy, epitomising hallmark Rolls-Royce attention to detail.

SUZUKI

Authentics concept Suzuki presented the world premiere of the Authentics. Authentics is a concept model presented to enter the C-segment sedan class, which has the largest volume on the Chinese automobile market. By keeping its overall height low and adopting a long wheelbase, the new model represents a stable authentic sedan style. This doesn’t compromise the sharp and sporty character lines and an inflected body shape with an elegant curved surface. Suzuki plans to start the mass production model based on the authentics by the end of 2014 at its joint venture in China (Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile Co., LTD).

TOYOTA

Yaris Yundong Shuangqing FT-HT Yuejia Toyota unveiled the new Yaris hatchback. The new Yaris and the new Vios sedan, also on display, are production versions of global-strategic concept models that Toyota first displayed at last year’s Beijing Motor Show. Production and sales in China of both vehicles are scheduled to start at the end of this year. Two world premiere concepts (to be sold exclusively in China) were also on display at the show: the “Yundong Shuangqing II”, a concept equipped with a hybrid system currently under development at the Toyota

VOLKSWAGEN

AUTO SHANGHAI 2013

CrossBlue Coupé

The five-seat CrossBlue Coupé is 4,889 mm long, 2,015 mm wide and just 1,679 mm high: dimensions that give it a low-profile, wide appearance. As well showcasing the future for Volkswagen design, the CrossBlue Coupé also highlights future drivetrain possibilities, in this case a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a V6 turbocharged direct injection petrol engine and two electric motors (40 kW front and 85 kW rear), together producing up to 415 PS (305 kW). Via a six-speed DSG gearbox, that power enables this 4,889 mm-long SUV to accelerate like a

sports car: zero to 62 mph takes a mere 5.9 seconds, and the top speed is 146 mph. Even with this level of performance, fuel economy is impressive with a combined cycle figure of 3.0 l/100 km, or 94.1 mpg. In hybrid mode, with a depleted battery powered by the TSI engine, the CrossBlue Coupé returns 6.9 l/100 km (40.9 mpg). This efficiency gives the CrossBlue Coupé, with its 80-litre fuel tank, a theoretical range of 1,190 km (740 miles). There are no current plans for the CrossBlue Coupé to enter production.

THE LATEST SPRING NEWS for the Australian market

VOLVO S60 POLESTAR

Developed from 17 years of motorsport experience, and sharing DNA with the 508bhp Volvo S60 Polestar Concept Car, the first road car from Polestar to be put into production is here - the Volvo S60 Polestar. “We received a fantastic response to our Volvo C30 and S60 Polestar concept cars, so we are very happy to now introduce our first production car to the Australian market. This is an important step forward for Polestar, one that promises an exciting future” says Christian Dahl, Managing Director of Polestar. The Volvo S60 Polestar shares technology from the Polestar racing cars, like dampers from Öhlins, high capacity brakes, and the extensively developed, highly-tuned chassis. A new aerodynamic package has also been developed, including a front splitter, rear wing and diffuser - all having been tweaked and modified in the Volvo Car Group wind tunnel in collaboration with the Volvo Research and Development team. The six-cylinder turbo-charged

Volvo T6 engine has been optimised by Polestar with a bigger turbo, new intercooler, revised engine mapping and racing exhaust to produce 350bhp or 257kW and 500+Nm. The S60 Polestar accelerates from 0-100km/ h in just 4.9 seconds, via a Polestar-tuned six-speed automatic gearbox - which also features a launch control system - and a Polestar-tuned Haldex 4WD system. The car is governed to a top speed of 250km/h. A limited production run has been developed exclusively for the Australian market as a pilot project, with the first cars being delivered to customers in late June 2013. Introduction of the Volvo S60 Polestar to further markets is under investigation pending the response of the Australian introduction.

Toyota’s “anti-crisis” ME.WE Concept Working with Toyota since 2011, Massaud has sought to create an “anti-crisis” car that addresses contemporary human, economic and environmental challenges, bringing his independent vision and experience from outside the motor industry. ME.WE is a pick-up, convertible, off-roader and small city car in one. The concept’s name expresses its simultaneous concern for personal well-being (ME) and that of others (WE). ME.WE has a tubular aluminium structure, on to which light and hard-wearing polypropylene panels are fitted. The moulded panels are made using a cost-efficient standard production system, but they are easy to personalise. ME.WE is electric-powered, using the same in-wheel motors as the Toyota i-ROAD, with batteries located under the floor, as in the iQ EV. With none of the tra-

ditional packaging restraints associated with conventional powertrains, the entire interior could be devoted to the vehicle’s occupants and luggage. The in-wheel motor system means it can be operated in two or fourwheel drive, allowing it to tackle rougher terrain than a traditional car, and without the weight penalty of a 4×4 transmission system. Bamboo is used in the construction of the floor and for the cabin’s horizontal surfaces, chosen both for being a renewable resource and aesthetically pleasing. ME.WE is easy to keep clean with a simple wash, inside and out.

The new Porsche 911 Turbo is here!

50 years ago, the 911 made its debut at the Frankfurt International Auto Show. And just ten years later, the first 911 Turbo prototype was on stage. On this 40th anniversary Porsche is now presenting the new generation 911 Turbo and Turbo S – the technological and dynamic performance peak of the 911 series. New all-wheel drive, active rear axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, full-LED headlights and the up to 560 hp flat six-cylinder engine with bi-turbo charging underscore the role of the new generation 911 Turbo as a circuit racing car, everyday car and technology platform. Playing an equally crucial role are the entirely new chassis in lightweight design with a 100 mm longer wheelbase and larger 20-inch wheels. The PDCC active anti-roll system, which is being offered for the first time in 911 Turbo models, increases dynamic performance even more. The performance partners in the powertrain area are the further advanced engines and the new PTM allwheel drive system. The turbocharged 3.8-litre sixcylinder engine with direct petrol injection produces 520 hp (383 kW) in the 911 Turbo and 560 hp (412 kW) in the S model. The 911 Turbo with the optional Sport Chrono Package accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, which is even one-tenth better than the value of the previous 911 Turbo S. The new 911 Turbo S handles the standard sprint to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds.

The car’s top speed is 318 km/h. Porsche developed an active aerodynamic system on the new 911 Turbo models for the first time: Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) consists of a sturdy, retractable three-stage front spoiler, whose segments can be pneumatically extended, and a deployable rear wing with three adjustable wing positions. The new top models of the 911 model series arrive on the market at the end of September 2013. In Germany, the 911 Turbo costs 162,055 Euros; the new 911 Turbo S costs 195,256 Euros, including VAT and countryspecific features.

AESTHETIC APPEAL, SPACE AND FUNCTIONALITY

The BMW 3 Gran Turismo fuses the dynamic sporting attributes of the 3 Series Sedan with the practicality and versatility of the 3 Series Touring, and backs these qualities up with a palpable increase in space and longdistance comfort. The latest addition to the 3 Series family can be ordered in an entry-level version, with the Sport Line, Luxury Line or Modern Line equipment packages, or with the optional M Sport package, which will already be available from July 2013

Design: emotional and practical Attractive proportions, four doors with frameless windows, the coupestyle, gently falling roofline and large tailgate define the distinctive character of the new BMW 3 Gran Turismo. At 4,824 millimetres long, 1,489 millimetres tall, 1,828 millimetres wide and with a 2,920-millimetre wheelbase, the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is notably larger all round than the Sedan and Touring variants of the 3 Series range. Its dimensions allow it to lay on impressive levels of space for passengers and their luggage, as a result of which it passes the “longdistance comfort” test with flying colours. At 520 litres, its boot capacity is up 25 litres on the BMW 3 Series Touring’s, while an extra 70 millimetres of rear legroom place it between the BMW 5 and BMW 7 Series. The eye-catching front end of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo makes no secret of its BMW 3 Series family ties, but also brings its own individual flavour into the mix. The link between the front and rear of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is particularly seamless. Hallmark BMW proportions and a coupe-style roofline sloping down towards the rear stretch the car’s silhouette, while powerfully taut surfaces and rising lines lend the flanks their inherent dynamic verve. The smooth transition of the roofline into the rear creates extra interior space while showcasing the car’s enviable functionality. The rear of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is highlighted by horizontal surfaces and lines emphasising muscular width and unshakable roadholding. The wraparound section below the spoiler has an extremely flat appearance and visually lowers the stance of the rear. The spectrum of colours available for the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo takes its cues from the BMW 3 Sedan. Customers can choose from a total of 12 paint finishes, irrespective of the equipment line specified, including intense colour shades, an array of metallic options and a broad spread of classic tones. Interior: generous freedom of movement The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo adds 200 millimetres to the length of the BMW 3 Series Touring and has a 110-millimetre longer wheelbase. The new model variant also stands 81 millimetres taller. These generous dimensions create a luxurious feeling of space for the passengers (the Gran Turismo also offers a full 70 millimetres of extra legroom in the rear) and ensure freedom of movement in every seat. This new BMW can be adapted precisely to meet changing requirements. To this end, the rear seat backrests are fitted with folding head restraints and can be split 40:20:40 as standard, allowing the load area to be increased in stages from 520 up to 1,600 litres. Folding down only the central segment creates a large throughloading aperture that enables four people to bring several pairs of skis or snowboards on board with them. Folding down all the backrests, meanwhile, creates a slightly rising, almost level and flush-fitting load compartment floor as the gaping 1,120 x 618-millimetre (width x height) load aperture and high-opening electric tailgate make it easier to load up bulky items. The car is fitted as standard with button-con-

trolled electric tailgate activation, but the options list also includes the Smart Opener (part of the Comfort Access option), which allows the boot lid to be opened handsfree with a movement of the foot under the rear bumper. The cockpit fits the same template as the new 3 Series Sedan and new 3 Series Touring. In customary fashion, the driver-focused layout ensures optimum access to all driving functions. Crystal clear circular instruments with a black-panel display and a freestanding iDrive monitor in contemporary flatscreen design underline the sense of functional elegance. High-quality material combinations coupled with supreme levels of workmanship reinforce the premium ambience on board the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. A large number of colour and upholstery variants offer scope for a multitude of combinations. In the entry-level version, for example, three different trim colours can be combined with a choice of one cloth or two leather shades. Customers can also choose from three additional equipment lines (Sport Line, Luxury Line, Modern Line) and an M Sport package, all of which add individual touches to the car’s looks inside and out.

Powertrain and chassis Customers can choose from a selection of five torquey, refined and economical engines from the launch of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, all of which work with the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Wheels and tyres Even the entry-level version of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is fitted ex-factory with high-quality light-alloy wheels and 225/55 R17 tyres. Run-flat safety tyres– which, depending on driving style and load, allow the car to be driven a further 80 kilometres (50 miles) or more, even with a complete loss of tyre pressure – come as standard, as does the Tyre Puncture Warning System (TPWS). This provides not only added convenience and safety benefits; dispensing with a spare tyre and jack also saves weight and creates additional storage space in the boot.

A centrifugal pendulum in the dual-mass flywheel reduces irregular running for greater comfort at low engine speeds. The BMW 320d Gran Turismo is available with advanced BMW BluePerformance technology, combining a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter with a NOX storage catalyst to ensure the 320d already meets the future EU6 emissions standard today. The 3.0-litre in-line engine will win the hearts of sporty drivers with its supreme power delivery, ravenous appetite for revs and exceptional refinement. Developing output of 225 kW/306 hp at 5,800 rpm, the six-cylinder powerplant helps the 335i Gran Turismo to put forward a compelling dynamic case. Torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) is available as low down the engine speed range as 1,200 rpm and remains on tap up to 5,000 rpm. With such impressive firepower on board, the new BMW 335i Gran Turismo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). This six-cylinder is also extremely economical and low-polluting. Its fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres (34.9 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions come in at 188 grams per kilometre. The advanced four-cylinder unit of the 328i produces a maximum 180 kW/245 hp from its 1,997 cc capacity at 5,000 rpm. The petrol unit drums up peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) at just 1,250 rpm and maintains it all the way to 4,800 rpm. The new BMW 328i Gran Turismo sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 6.1 seconds and posts an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) while recording average fuel consumption of just 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres (42.2 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle. CO2 emissions are also suitably restrained, at 156 grams per kilometre. The BMW 320i Gran Turismo comes with a powerplant based on the same ultra-low-friction 1,997 cc core engine as the BMW 328i, their differing output ratings achieved principally through modifications to the injection and turbocharging technology. In the new BMW 320i Gran Turismo, the four cylinder petrol unit develops 135 kW/184 hp at 5,000 rpm and serves up peak torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) at a meagre 1,250 rpm. Fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox, the 320i needs only 7.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest, but has a very understated thirst for petrol with an impressive average fuel economy in the EU test cycle of 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres (42.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 153 grams per kilometre.

FOCUS - BMW GRAN TURISMO

The new BMW 320d Gran Turismo is powered by a fourcylinder diesel engine whose enviable power output belies an extremely frugal and low-polluting nature. Maximum output of 135 kW/184 hp at 4,000 rpm and torque of 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) – available between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm – ensure the new BMW 320d Gran Turismo is a stand-out dynamic performer and fits the profile of a sporty GT even on diesel power. Its performance figures bear this out. The agile diesel asks a mere 8.0 secon-

ds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph), and a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph) is available should the need arise. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres (57.7 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometre already put the new BMW 320d Gran Turismo in low-pollutant territory. High output and surging torque also mark out the entry-level diesel model, which is based on the same core 2.0-litre engine as the unit under the bonnet of the

BMW 320d. In the BMW 318d Gran Turismo it develops 105 kW/143 hp at 4,000 rpm, while peak torque of 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) is available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Given its 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 9.7 seconds (automatic: 9.6 sec) and 210 km/h (130 mph) top speed, the BMW 318d Gran Turismo goes extremely easy on the diesel: with the manual gearbox it records average fuel consumption figures of 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres (62.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km, while the au-

tomatic posts 4.8 litres (58.8 mpg imp) and 127 g/km. This new BMW also offers an interesting six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Easy gear changes, precise shift travel and optimum gear spacing are the stand-out features of the six-speed manual gearboxes in the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. Their lightweight, compact construction and innovative, low-friction design allow them to make a pivotal contribution to the driving pleasure available on board.

Further drive variants from summer 2013 Later this year BMW will be adding another diesel engine and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to the new 3 Series Gran Turismo range. The BMW 325d Gran Turismo with 160 kW/218 hp and an extremely impressive torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) will join the line-up in summer 2013, as will the xDrive variants of the BMW 320i, 328i, 335i and 320d Gran Turismo.

Eight-speed automatic gearbox is available as an option. With the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo the engineers have succeeded in achieving both outstanding handling properties and a high degree of agility and precision. The key factors here are its longer 2,920-millimetre wheelbase (+ 110 mm over the 3 Series Touring) and standard specification, including 17-inch wheels. The front axle of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is familiar from the 3 Series Sedan and 3 Series Touring. The wheel suspension combines maximum stiffness with minimum weight, while aluminium torque struts, wishbones and swivel bearings make for a significant reduction in unsprung masses. In addition, the double-joint axle has been set up to optimum effect, thanks to the absence of torque steer. Another beneficiary of this is the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo’s electromechanical steering system, which is low in weight and helps reduce fuel consumption. The rear axle of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo makes an important contribution to the new model’s driving dynamics and ride comfort. Its spacesaving five-link design features precisely calculated elastokinematics, which makes for long spring travel as well as precise wheel location in all situations.

CLIP Dynamic options The 10-millimetre-lower M Sport suspension included as part of the M Sport package can also be specified separately. It works with a firmer spring/damper set-up and stiffer anti-roll bars, and brings with it 18 or 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. Alternatively, customers may like to specify lowered adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers, which adjusts the damper mapping to the road surface and driving situation. The driver can also use the Driving Experience Control switch to vary the basic suspension tuning between more comfortable or sportier settings according to individual preference. For performance-minded customers, BMW offers the M Sport brake. Aluminium four-piston fixed callipers at the front and two-piston fixed callipers at the rear, along with generously sized brake discs, combine extremely low weight with very short stopping distances. Variable Sports Steering with Servotronic is available as an option, providing different steering gear ratios depending on the angle of the steering wheel. It means that less steering effort is required for parking and turning manoeuvres. Also, handling is sharpened, for example when instantaneous evasive action is required.

Eight-speed automatic gearbox available as an option With its additional ratios, the slick eight-speed automatic gearbox is able to provide shift comfort, sports performance and efficiency of the highest order. A raft of technical innovations of the eight-speed automatic ensure that powerful acceleration and sharp mid-range sprints can be enjoyed without any notable increase in fuel consumption. Performance-minded drivers will therefore be in for a treat, especially since they can also choose to change gear manually. With its harmonious gear ratio spacing, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo offers refined and powerful acceleration, but can also be driven at a laid-back cruise and with an eye on fuel economy at low engine speeds. A sports automatic variant of the new eight-speed gearbox is available as an additional option for the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, offering even sharper shift dynamics and manual gear changes using steering wheel mounted shift paddles.

Moreover, the rear axle ensures excellent noise and vibration damping. The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo relies for its stopping power on lightweight floatingcalliper brakes with large inner-vented discs. As well as the low unsprung masses, this system also makes its mark with outstanding heat tolerance, superior wet braking performance and excellent feel. A brake pad wear indicator and a brake drying function are standard on all models. The driver enjoys the safety net of various state-of-the-art electronic aids integrated into the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system. This incorporates the following functions: the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), along with the Start-Off Assistant and an electronic limited slip function for the rear differential, which can be activated using the “DSC Off” button. Another standard feature is Brake Energy Regeneration, which ensures that – as far as possible – power for the vehicle’s electrical system is generated during braking and overrun.

CLIP ECO PRO mode The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo also offers drivers the ability to vary the overall character of the vehicle to suit the driving situation or their personal preferences. As well as sportier or more comfortable drive settings, they can also opt for extra fuel efficiency. The different modes are selected via the Driving Experience Control switch with ECO PRO mode, which is standard on all models. Using a button on the centre console, the driver can choose between ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes. Each of these predefined set-ups activates different settings for the relevant powertrain and suspension components.

BMW ConnectedDrive The plethora of standard and optional driver assistance systems and mobility services on offer ensures that the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo continues the tradition of setting the pace for safety, convenience and infotainment. Among the convenience and safety-enhancing assistance systems on offer are Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning including Collision Warning with braking function. These systems employ radar sensors and camera monitoring to alert drivers to potential collision risks when changing lanes or if they veer out of the lane unintentionally, and also issue a warning when driving too close to the vehicle ahead. On the other side the ACC Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and Speed Limit Info adds to the functionality of the convenience and safety options. Not only does ACC Stop & Go make it possible to cruise along motorways and country roads with the greatest of ease while maintaining the desired distance to vehicles ahead, it also regulates the speed in heavy traffic, even braking to a stop if necessary before pulling away again automatically. This has the effect of making life easier for the driver in slowmoving traffic and congestion as well. In combination with the Professional or Business navigation system, Speed Limit Info helps to keep the driver informed of the speed limit for the current stretch of road. Finally an high-performance interface technology provides top-of-the-range infotainment capability that enables the driver and passengers to make extensive use of external mobile phones and music players.

CLIP BMW premiere: active rear spoiler reduces lift The BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is the brand’s first car to be fitted with an active rear spoiler, which extends automatically once the car reaches 110 km/h (68 mph) to ensure it retains the traditional BMW dynamic capability at higher speeds. Once extended, the spoiler reduces lift on the rear axle by more than 60 per cent, allowing the Gran Turismo to replicate the aerodynamic qualities of the BMW 3 Series Sedan. If the car’s speed slows below 70 km/h (43 mph), the spoiler automatically retracts, melting back into the car’s trailing edge almost invisibly. If required, the rear spoiler can be extended and retracted manually using a button in the driver’s door control panel.

THE GREEN SIDE

NEW NISSAN LEAF

UNEXPECTED SMART ACCESSIBLE

The now iconic silhouette of the world’s most popular pure electric vehicle hasn’t changed, but as production starts in Europe the multiaward winning Nissan LEAF has undergone a number of significant engineering enhancements. New LEAF is more agile than before thanks to a comprehensive raft of chassis changes while it will go further on a single charge. The NEDC range has increased from 175 kms to 199 kms thanks to a series of engineering improvements. And a new optionally available onboard fast charger halves the time needed for a complete battery recharge.

Motor and battery The biggest single change made to New Nissan LEAF is to the powertrain – through changes that result in greater range. In the original car the battery charger and inverter was housed in the luggage area of the car behind the rear seats. Although comparatively compact, the assembly ran the full width of the trunk. As well as stealing some luggage space it meant a completely flat load floor was impossible to achieve. The charger and inverter are now in the front of the car and integral with the electric motor itself which not only increases luggage space by 40 litres – about the size of a piece of airline ‘carry-on’ luggage – but also permits a flatter floor than previously when the rear seats are folded. Although the high response AC synchronous motor develops 80kW as before, it features a number of new elements making it even more environmentally friendly and efficient. The new motor has had its intertia reduced by 5%, improving the overall efficiency of the unit.

THE GREEN SIDE - NEW NISSAN LEAF

CLIP Nissan LEAF is fast becoming a familiar sight on taxi ranks right across Europe. One of the first cities to embrace the benefits of non-polluting taxis was Amsterdam where the Taxi-E company is running a fleet of 13 Nissan LEAFs. Their fleet has covered more than 700,000 km and although they have had a couple of flat tyres, they have never had a flat battery. The latest city to join the green taxi revolution is Zurich where a Green Taxi Initiative has been establish by a group

of young Swiss entrepreneurs. They form part of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community with a desire to serve society and improve local communities. Initially ten Nissan LEAF taxis will operate in the city with a further ten joining the scheme midway through the year. By 2015, it is envisaged that 15 per cent of the Zurich Taxi fleet will be electric and that the city will have an extensive network of fast chargers capable of replenishing a battery from 30 to 80 per cent capacity in just 15 minutes.

As before, the motor is powered by a Nissan-designed 48-module compact lithium-ion battery mounted in a single pack under the cabin area to keep the car’s centre of gravity as low as possible. The battery pack is housed in a strong metal case giving extra protection in a side impact. Performance against the clock hasn changed slightly with a top speed of 144 km/h (down by 1 km/h) and 0-100 km/h taking 11.5 sec (0.4 seconds quicker than before and improvements to the car’s aerodynamics, a weight loss programme and other technical changes mean the official NEDC range has risen from 175 km to 199 km. Greater practicality is also promised by the option of an on board 6.6kW charger which allows the use of 32 amp public or home chargers. A 32 amp post will recharge a depleted battery in half the time of a typical domestic 16 amp EV socket – four hours instead of eight – but more importantly it can give a meaningful boost to a partially used battery even during a short stopover. With 600 CHAdeMO standard quick chargers now installed across Europe, even quicker charging is available for EV drivers. A quick charger delivers 50 kW of high voltage di-

rect current straight to the battery mean even quicker charging – it takes just 15 minutes to boost a battery from 30 to 80 per cent capacity. Following feedback from existing Nissan LEAF owners, the car’s on-board charging point has also been modified. The charger lid can now be opened remotely via the key fob or via an electric, rather than mechanical switch, in the cabin, and there’s a small LED lamp within the assembly to help identify the sockets at night. Chassis and other technical enhancements The changes have been made to tailor LEAF to Europe’s higher average speeds and more demanding roads. The result is a car that’s more engaging to drive and yet is just as comfortable over poor road surfaces. The revised dampers reduce float and help provide a more dynamic drive without adversely affecting ride comfort while to give greater feel and weight at speed the electric power steering system has been recalibrated. All of the work takes advantage of the LEAF’s bespoke EV packaging, which places the battery pack and therefore the centre of gravity very low in the chassis.

THE GREEN SIDE - NEW NISSAN LEAF

The brakes are now more progressive in use and the regenerative aspect improved for better harvesting of braking energy. The system efficiency has been improved by 6 per cent to 94 per cent and the minimum speed at which energy is recovered reduced to 3 km/h from 7 km/h. There have also been changes made to the Eco driving mode with a new ‘B’ setting on the transmission. B-mode increases regenerative braking during deceleration while a separate ‘Eco’ button on the steering wheel alters the throttle mapping to discourage harsh acceleration and thus extend the driving range. On the original LEAF the two systems worked together with increased regeneration only available in ‘Eco’ mode, but can now be operated independently of one another allowing drivers to benefit from greater energy harvesting under braking without having to forgo access to instant acceleration. A new heat pump has been added to a more efficient heating and ventilation system and reduces electrical consumption when the air conditioning is in use. Air source heat pumps have been used in cutting-edge sustainable houses across Europe, but have rarely been seen in an automotive context. The heat pump works by harvesting heat energy that is present in even cold air and distri-

buting it to the cabin. This new system improves the real world driving range, by cutting heater energy consumption by up to 70 per cent. Customers also requested the ability to fully switch off the heating or air conditioning system for maximum energy efficiency. To achieve this a switch marked “Heat” has been added which when switched off, allows the fan to work independently of heating or cooling. Other changes boosting the car’s range are more efficient battery and energy management and a reduction in internal friction. Weight savings also mean New LEAF is lighter than before. Models with equipment levels that match the original are around 30kgs lighter, while the new entry level version is as much as 50kgs lighter. This has been achieved by redesigning that battery casing and the integration of electrical components, which has reduced the length and number of heavy, high voltage interconnecting wires. With all of the changes that have brought improvements to the New LEAF’s range, customers also wanted to change the way that remaining battery energy was displayed. Instead of just the bars system, like that of a conventional fuel gauge, the New LEAF can also display a percentage of battery remaining.

CLIP While the original Nissan LEAF was built solely in Japan, New LEAF is being built in three locations: Japan, North America and Europe. Production of New LEAF for Europe started in March at Nissan’s record-breaking plant in Sunderland in the UK. It is built on Line 1 alongside the hugely successful Qashqai and Qashqai +2 models. The plant also builds Juke and Note on its Line 2. The specific requirements of LEAF’s electric motor, charger and inverter package has meant a clean room has been established in the centre of the plant’s original final assembly area, where the power train is assembled in near clinical conditions. The LEAF drivetrain is inserted into the car in the same manner as conventional engines are placed into Qashqai, by being lifted from underneath by the same equipment used for the combustion engines. It’s not just the car that’s built at Sunderland, but the batteries too. A new facility has been built on the Sunderland site where more than 200 employees will create battery packs for the LEAF and forthcoming e-NV200 electric van, which will be made in Barcelona. The highly sophisticated battery plant is quite unlike any other area of the factory, with workers donning protective fabric suits, anti-static shoes and taking an air shower before starting work in some areas.

The Sunderland plant built its first car, a white Nissan Bluebird, in 1986. Total production since then has topped 7 million units with 80 per cent of production exported to 97 countries. The plant currently employs 6,100 people. Further new models include the new Nissan Note and the next generation Nissan Qashqai, and from 2015, the plant will also build a forthcoming compact Infiniti model.

THE GREEN SIDE - NEW NISSAN LEAF

LEAF NISMO RC : the racing version The Nissan LEAF Nismo RC is a competition orientated battery electric vehicle, that totally redefines the image of zero emission cars. The Nissan LEAF Nismo RC combines the strengths of Nismo, Nissan’s world-renowned motorsports company, and the engineers that support the GT-R in its races in the Super GT series and the FIA GT1 World Championship. It functions as a platform for further advancement in “green” motorsports by being a “driving laboratory” in electric vehicle technology and aerodynamics. The Nissan LEAF Nismo RC uses a full carbonfibre monocoque chassis; the body is 20mm longer, 170mm wider, and has a 99mm shorter wheelbase than the road Nissan LEAF. The biggest difference is the 350mm drop in height. While the production model has 160mm of ground clearance, the Nismo RC has 60mm. Also, the vehicle’s weight has been reduced by approximately 40%.

The internal layout of the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC also differs greatly from the vehicle it is derived from. The battery pack, motor and inverter have been moved to the middle of the vehicle and the drivetrain changed from front-to rearwheel drive. Also, the suspension employs both a front and rear double wishbone configuration and the driver is able to adjust the brake balance. Bridgestone P225/40R18 racing tyres give tread to the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC. This interesting car is equipped with 48 compact lithium ion battery modules and a high response AC synchronous motor developing 80kW and 280Nm. Using the quick charging port inside its rear cowl, the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC can be charged up to 80% of its full capacity in 30 minutes. In tests, the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC posted a top speed of 150 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 6.85 seconds. It is estimated that under racing conditions the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC will be able to run for 20 minutes on a full charge.

Exterior and interior New LEAF is built on a bespoke EV platform with a 2700 mm wheelbase. It is 4445 mm long, 1770 mm wide and 1550 mm tall. Its distinctive shape is highly aerodynamic: subtle changes to the grille – virtually the only visual change between original and New LEAF – and a new 17inch wheel design have reduced the Cd figure to a best of just 0.28. As before the front of the car is framed by the slim, almost vertical, headlights, with LED lighting on top models. The lights also direct airflow away from the door mirrors to help aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. The rear view is dominated by thin, gently curved, vertical taillights and is, of course, notable by the total absence of an exhaust pipe. The colour palette has been expanded. There are now seven exterior colours available with a solid white, grey, red pearl metallic and black metallic joining metallic silver, white pearl and blue pearl metallic. Significant changes within the cabin include new seats As well as being redesigned for better support, the front-seats now incorporate height adjustment and have been reshaped to provide up to 53mm more leg room for rear seat passengers. This has been achieved by reprofiling the driver and front passenger seats to allow those in the rear to place their feet underneath them, increasing leg room. At the same time, a new bio-fabric covering has been introduced for the Acenta. Where the original model featured material made from 39 per cent recycled plastic

bottles, the new bio-fabric is 100 per cent derived from sugar cane, a sustainable and virtually CO2 neutral material. Black leather is fitted to the top of the range Tekna grade, and all grades are available with a more practical, dark interior finish, more suited to European winter conditions. Other interior changes include a new foot operated parking brake. New features and equipment New LEAF introduces a revised and updated version of Nissan’s acclaimed CarWings Navigation system. This innovative feature allows owners to manage and remotely control features from a computer or smartphone. The updated version adds a number of new features, including enhancements to the remote heating and air-conditioning functions, greater smartphone integration, improved voice recognition facility and real-time information on the nearest charge points. It now supports nine additional languages including Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian. One of the most popular features in the original LEAF is the ability to set the cars climate control to activate at a particular time, warming the car up or cooling it down before beginning a journey. This allows customers to save battery charge by warming or cooling the car from the mains supply while it is charging, rather than from the battery. Another feature is a purpose designed Bose® audio system which, like AVM, is standard on Tekna versions. The Energy Efficient Series system delivers a powerful, high quality audio experience but from a unit that’s both more compact than similar premium systems and which uses about half the electrical energy.

THE GREEN SIDE - NEW NISSAN LEAF

CLIP A little over 12 months ago just 150 Nissan dealers were authorised to sell and service LEAF… across the whole of Europe. While most of those dealers were in or near major conurbations – the typical environment for EV usage – the comparative scarcity of network coverage held some potential buyers back. Today, there are more than 1,400 European Nissan dealers handling all aspects of LEAF ownership. Over the same period the number of public charging posts has risen significantly. In April 2012, Europe had around 12,000

conventional charging posts but that figure has almost doubled to 20,000 today. The rise in quick chargers is even more dramatic. By delivering 50 kW of high voltage direct current straight to the battery a quick charger is capable of replenishing a depleted power pack to 80 per cent capacity in under 30 minutes. There were just 195 quick chargers across Europe this time last year. Today there are more than 650 – all using the CHAdeMO standard and some provided by Nissan – and that number is rising all the time. Globally the figure currently stands at about 2,500.

Expanded line-up There are now three models in the LEAF range, giving buyers a greater choice than before. Following Nissan practice, the range starts with the Visia model and scrolls through Acenta before reaching the top Tekna grade. Visia models have a lower entry price point than the original LEAF, making zero-emission mobility even more accessible. Visia models have 16-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, black mirror caps and halogen headlights. Front fog lights, i-Key and an audio system with four speakers are also standard. Mid-range Acenta grade is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, advanced IT with Carwings telematics, rear view monitor, remote charger and heating activation, rear pri-

vacy glass, a six-speaker sound system, body colour mirrors and automatic lights with follow-me home lighting. Acenta models also have a quick charge port, rain sensing wipers and electric folding door mirrors. The new top Tekna model adds LED headlamps, the seven-speaker Bose sound system, leather seats (optional in Nordic markets), 17-inch alloy wheels and Around View Monitor. All versions have a full complement of safety equipment as standard with front side and curtain airbags as well as ABS, EBD and brake assistance. The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is also standard. Nissan LEAF gained a full five star EuroNCAP rating on its launch and was the first 100% electric vehicle to gain this safety rating.

CLASSIC

THE ROLLS ROYCE EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE DREW UNIVERSAL PRAISE ACROSS THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD

the 1913 alpine trial The years leading up to the 1913 Alpine Trials saw Rolls-Royce win an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. The new 40/50 hp, or Silver Ghost as it came to be known, had performed faultlessly in the landmark 1907 Scottish Reliability Trials. This success was followed with the seamless completion of the famous 1911 London to Edinburgh Top Gear Trial and Brooklands 100mph Run

The Silver Ghost launch heralded a period of great success for Rolls Royce. Its hallmark blend of performance, quality, smoothness and quietness endeared it to discerningly wealthy individuals the world over. Its marriage of luxury and reliability held allure for those seeking to negotiate the challenging road conditions in burgeoning markets like India and North America. In style and unabashed comfort. However, Claude Johnson, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and commercial foil to the great engineer Sir Henry Royce, sought further success in the hyper-competitive European market. A depot had been established in Paris in 1911 with further representation on the continent following in Vienna to serve the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Russia. The 1913 Alpine Trial gave him the opportunity he needed. Understandably, meticulous attention to every detail was considered in preparing the cars for the following year’s event. The Alps at that time of year would present an extraordinary array of challenges. Extreme temperatures, altitude and a rugged landscape peppered with water-filled gullies, pitted roads and numerous other hazards, all had to be addressed. Most fundamental was the development of a new four-speed gearbox with low-gear designed to ensure the engine’s abundant power could be exploited on exceptional gradients. The chassis and suspension were also strengthened to mitigate against the pitfalls of traversing unmetaled roads at pace. A larger primary tank, and newly developed reserve fuel tank were developed to allow non-stop daily running. Between arriving in Paris in early May 1913 and the first rally inspection on 21 June 1913, the team embarked on an exhaustive familiarisation trip. Though conditions were appalling, with unseasonably high levels of settled snow, the specially adapted were more than a match. All cars arrived in Vienna on time and without fault for their pre-rally inspections.

Day 1 - Sunday 22 June (260 miles, 4,000 ft – highest point) On assembly at the Vienna starting point, the Rolls-Royce Works Team drew admiration from observers, enthralled by their quietness and elegance. The cars were started in order of expected pace. As the most powerful vehicles there, the Rolls-Royce Works Team set off first. An easy first morning was punctuated with a climb of the beautiful Semmering Pass. As planned Radley set the pace, leading the event from start to finish. The RollsRoyce cars following closely behind at a more stately speed in their pursuit of the Team Prize. Having set-off at 5am, Radley had completed the course by lunchtime – covering 260 miles in little over eight hours. The Works Team arrived 45 minutes later, with the Minervas the only cars near to matching their pace.

CLASSIC - ROLLS ROYCE

CLIP The 1913 Rolls-Royce Works Team Claude Johnson knew that success in such a high-profile European trial was imperative – and a plan of ‘characteristic thoroughness’ was hatched. He oversaw the selection and preparation of the Rolls-Royce cars and Works Team personally. Eric Platford one of the firm’s most trusted and longestserving employees was selected as Team Manager – his prior experience as the Honorable Charles Stewart Rolls’ riding mechanic during his victorious 1906 Tourist Trophy campaign, equipping him perfectly for the challenges ahead. Platford’s car would be driven by Curt Friese, the Rolls-Royce representative in Austria, his success vital to the planned sales push on the continent. EW Hives, a senior member of the Experimental Department at Derby, and first man to drive the Silver Ghost at 101mph would pilot the second car. Arguably the team’s most proficient driver, he was accompanied by gifted mechanic George Hancock. The Works Team line up was completed by Jock Sinclair, a man well accustomed to the demands of Alpine motoring. At the time, privateer entrants also sought to pit their own RollsRoyces against other marque’s in trials across the globe. James Radley was one of the most prolific participants. Johnson decided that Radley should use his private car to set the pace for the Rolls-Royce Works Team.

Day 2 (262 miles, 5,700 ft – highest point) The morning of the Rally’s second day saw Rolls-Royce incur its first penalty. Shortly after starting his car in the permitted one minute, Hives accidentally stalled. Once they were going, the challenge did not abate. The route was wet, muddy and slippery as they attempted to negotiate the Tauren, Katschberg and Brenner passes. Climbing 2,900 ft in just 12 miles over the oldest road in the Alps, the Tauren pass proved almost impassable to many. The Rolls-Royce team however was more than equal to its characteristic, steep 22% gradient. It would prepare them well for what was to come. The ‘AA guide to the Alps’ said of the Katschberg “for an overgeared or overloaded car, the pass may on accession prove insurmountable,” further describing it as “a strenuous pull all the way with the unusual feature of culminating in the steepest gradient on the whole pass (27.9%).” The poor weather conditions compounded this further making for an exceptionally treacherous road surface. The Rolls-Royce Works Team performed impeccably, driving with ease at half-throttle. Radley averaged 25mph and never fell below 17mph even on the steepest inclines. A less eventful run over the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck concluded the day’s travails. Day 3 (246 miles) The third day was more about glamour than the grit of the road. A relatively easy 246 mile run over the Reschen Pass via Meran and Trient culminated at Riva on the beautiful shores of Lake Garda. Once again the Rolls-Royce team led from the front. That evening, participants were treated to a grand reception – replete with a procession of illuminated boats and fireworks, framed sublimely by the magnificent mountain backdrop. Day 4 (192 miles, 7,400ft – highest point) Day four presented participants with a spectacular but attritional drive across the Dolomites, culminating in an ascent of the 7,400 ft Pordoi pass – the highest point of the rally. The Goberra and Broccone passes offered keen drivers an engaging succession of magnificent sweeping hairpins. As the route wound towards Cortina and Toblach, rain and overcast skies rather spoiled an otherwise beautiful section of the rally. This rain soon turned to heavy snow. A reminder to the ever-exuberant RollsRoyce Works Team was served when a chasing Minerva skidded and slid into a verge. The car suspended itself in a ditch but miraculously nobody was hurt.

CLIP First ever Rolls Royce exhibition opens at BMW Museum in Munich

CLASSIC - ROLLS ROYCE

The unique exhibition, entitled ‘Strive for Perfection’, celebrates the tenth year of the renaissance of the RollsRoyce marque under BMW Group ownership. The exhibition also commemorates yet another key milestone in the history of the Rolls-Royce brand – the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Henry Royce. The displays tell the story of the world’s leading super-luxury goods manufacturer in chronological detail; from the meeting of the company’s founding fathers, Sir Henry Royce and the Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls in 1904, through to the present day. Situated in the landmark BMW Museum bowl and covering more than 1,000 square metres over five floors, the exhibition includes 15 original RollsRoyce motor cars dating from 1907 to 2012. The collection includes the famous Rolls-Royce 10EX, one of the most significant experimental cars in the world, built in 1926 to demonstrate the performance potential of the ‘New Phantom’. Sir Henry Royce engineered and drove 10EX himself in his relentless pursuit of automotive perfection.

Day 5 (205 miles, 3,500 ft – highest point) Freezing conditions greeted competitors on the fifth day. Despite this, the three Rolls-Royce team cars started within the allotted minute without fault. However, much to his chagrin, Radley incurred a penalty on requiring three minutes to start his car. He recovered almost immediately propelling himself and his three compatriots to their accustomed position at the front. The route returned the cars to Austria, presenting a long drive through the South of the country via the steep and pitted Wurzen pass. Hairpins were once again the order of the day as they traversed the Perdils before a statelier run through the pretty valleys to the port city of Trieste. Day 6 (242 miles, 3,500 ft – highest point) A rest day that included a leisurely cruise around the bay of Trieste preceded one of the most challenging points in the rally. The steepest of all the passes, the Loibl had to be overcome before the final overnight stop at Klagenfurt. Rising 2,300 ft in just three miles, every bit of guile and experience was required of the pilots to negotiate the severe hairpin bends that characterised the ascent. The fastest car had ever climbed the hill was in six and a half minutes. Radley reached the summit in five and much to the amusement of onlookers, refreshed himself with a drink as he rounded the final hairpin. The RollsRoyce team, of course, arrived first in Klagenfurt.

CLIP Rolls-Royce Motor Cars commemorates 80 years since the death of one of the company’s founders, Sir Frederick Henry Royce. Sir Henry died in his 70th year at his house, ‘Elmstead’ in West Wittering, West Sussex on 22 April 1933. The house is less than 10 miles from the new Home of RollsRoyce at Goodwood. The life of Sir Henry Royce is celebrated in the first ever Rolls-Royce Motor Cars exhibition at the BMW Museum in Munich, which opened recently.

Final day disaster (260 miles, 5,000ft highest point) The final run from Klagenfurt to Vienna presented new challenges. The notorious Stubalpe Pass was home to no less that 125 gullies designed to allow water to drain across the road. They could only be negotiated at walking pace. Conditions proved so challenging the official pilot car stopped before the main ascent, allowing another, more adept pilot to take over. The Rolls-Royce team negotiated the challenge faultlessly before embarking on the relatively easy and fast final leg to Vienna. Radley hit 70mph on three occasions and only had to ease off as he risked falling foul of the officials by once again catching the pilot car. Leading as they approached Vienna on the final leg of the rally, the Rolls-Royce Works Team could have been forgiven for taking the opportunity to enjoy something of a lap of honour. However, disaster struck in the small village of Guntramsdorf. Sinclair, who had accrued no penalty thus far, was struck by a speeding Minerva (a car that had previously harassed two other Rolls-Royces on the rally) piloted by a non-competitor. The impact to the side of his car forced him onto a telegraph pole. Displaying extraordinary guile and presence of mind, Sinclair managed to keep the engine running. However, the near-side wheel was broken, its tyre burst and the offside running board completely destroyed and the change speed and handbrake lever were irreparably damaged. The wheel was repaired and Sinclair found he could still engage third gear, limping the rest of the way to Vienna in one gear. This was the only day the Rolls-Royce Works Team failed to finish in the first four positions. Final Standings Only 31 of the original 46 entrants reached Vienna. After a long process of inspections, the results were announced. The Rolls-Royce driven by Friese and Platford was one of only four cars to have performed without penalty. Rolls-Royce was heralded as the stars of the rally with people marvelling at their speed and strength. Frieze and Platford’s faultless performance and pace was rewarded with the most prestigious individual prizes presented by the Archduke Leopald Salvador. Radley was honoured with the City of Trieste’s Prize.

ADVERTORIAL

The only limit is your imagination. The specialists of Romeo Ferraris can satisfy every desire for customization and turn it into reality. The Cinquone Stradale is just the latest of a “Romeo Ferraris” long special cars dinasty that allows the “griffe” from Milan to be part of the true exclusive group of the masters of tuning

CINQUONE STRADALE USA TRIBUTE The American version of the Cinquone Stradale, presented as world premiere at the Las Vegas Sema Show 2012, has the same body kit of its European counterpart, with new bumpers and obvious widenings of the front and rear fenders. The power delivered by the engine of the American car, with a different architecture from the European version, is equal to 235 HP. What clearly distinguishes the USA Tribute, are the 18-inches alloy wheels “Nipper” by Romeo Ferraris and the USA commemorative livery that recalls the colors of the American flag (white, blue, and red) on the body and stars and stripes on the mirror covers. Racing interiors in two seats configuration, with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber, complete the package.

500 MONZA Realized only in 10 examples to celebrate the well-known italian Formula 1 circuit and the 50th anniversary of Romeo Ferraris, the 500 “Monza” represents the apex of a road preparation. The “starting point” is the Fiat 500 Abarth, that was mechanically revised in order to reach an incredible power of 260hp, and equipped with a new aerodynamic kit and brand new interiors, made of fine leather and Alcantara, with the colors of the famous italian racing circuit. 500 ANNIVERSARY To celebrate its 52th anniversary and the new Abarth Cabrio, Romeo Ferraris created a new special edition, with a unique bicolor chromed livery, in red and silver, and more power (+63hp).

500 ESTREMO The 500 Estremo is a true rocket that can bring extreme emotions to the driver, thanks to its 260hp. The vehicle also shows others that it is not an ordinary Abarth 500, as it comes with a new blue paint borrowed from Ferraris and interiors with leather and Alcantara. 500 SARDINIA A limited 500 Cabrio edition dedicated to Sardinia. Emerald green and sand outside in honor of the most famous island in the Mediterranean sea. Beige inside to remember the long stretches of fine sand of its beaches, with a special consolle made of cork, opportunely treated to avoid scratches and usury.

ADVERTORIAL - ROMEO FERRARIS BULLETIN

MERCEDES C63 AMG WHITESTORM Romeo Ferraris made the extreme Mercedes C63 AMG unique with a sharp contrast between the dull white body and the black details. Also inside the cockpit the “Whitestorm does not disappoint: the high quality interior is refined by exclusive materials such as Cartier leather. the 6.3 litre V8 engine and the 450 hp of the Mercedes C63

AMG is currently one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in the world. Romeo Ferraris has therefore chosen not to intervene directly on its components, but has enhanced the performance with a new electronic unit mapping that added 79 hp and increased torque by 81 Nm. A complete new exhaust system was also designed and installed, with special dual output terminals.

CLIP

BMW M3 560 More than 330 Km/h and 140hp more. Those are just some of the numbers that characterize the tuning of Romeo Ferraris for the new BMW M3 that has now also a racing set up and more powerful brakes. Important element of the tuning program for the Bavarian coupè is a specific supercharger powered by the German factory G-Power, official partner of the Romeo Ferraris since 2009. MINI COUNTRYMAN 150TH ANNIVERSARY To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification Romeo Ferraris created the “Mini Countryman 150th Anniversary”. A dull blue painting together with WRC replica exhaustand power increase (+43hp; +80Nm) make a Countryman S special. Leather interior is enhanced by blue piping on the seats and by the Italian flag and the Sagittarius embroidered on the seatback and on the headrest. FERRARI 599 GTO Romeo Ferraris also enhances the performance of the V12 Ferrari sports car with a new ECU and an exhaust system developed to measure. The Ferrari plan by Romeo Ferraris, that includes the F458 Italy, California and the F430, is the flagship of the Opera Factory. For the Ferrari GTO, the most exclusive berlina produced in limited edition of 599 vehicles only, Romeo Ferraris’ technicians studied a two-step empowerment to bring out the maximum performance. STEP 1, which includes sports air filters and a pair of terminals made to measure, allows gaining 15 hp and 13 Nm of torque, compared with the standard V12 engine, credited with 670 hp and 620 Nm of torque. STEP 2, besides adding new air filters, replaces the standard exhaust line with very high performing components developed to measure (collectors, mid pipe, exhaust) and includes a new ad hoc ECU mapping. The propeller supply significantly improves at any speed with an increase of about 40 hp and 48 Nm of torque. The Ferrari 599 GTO by Romeo Ferraris thus exceeds the treshold of 700 hp and no longer fears the comparison with the new F12 berlinetta. Romeo Ferraris also offers a number of carbon components to make the Ferrari 599 GTO even more exclusive and aggressive, such as the front blade, rear extractor and side mirrors.

THE RACING CINQUONE The development of the Cinquone Racing started in 2008, as a project strongly desired by Romeo Ferraris and super-expert driver Baronio (Aldo Cerruti), who wanted to get back on track with a prototype entirely realized by the Opera Factory. The starting point is a 500Abarth completely revised in mechanics (1,4 turbo engine is now able to distribute 360CV ) and body, now enlarged and with carbon parts that have reduced the weight to just 970 Kg. The car was officially presented at Palazzo Taverna, the Modigliani Institute headquarter in Rome on 2009 May 28 and made its racing debut a few weeks later in the Italian Endurance Touring Championship. The high performance of the prototype and the ability of the crew composed of Michela Cerruti e Mario Ferraris allowed to achieve 3 victories and 9 third positions, in addition to the class victory in the famous Vallelunga 6 Hours.

Three-year demonstration shows effectiveness of plug-in hybrid technology French energy provider EDF, the City and the Urban Community of Strasbourg officially concluded the three-year Plug-in Hybrid

demonstration launched in Strasbourg on April 27, 2010. The partners revealed the final conclusions collected from this large-scale demonstration, designed to gather real-world vehicle use feedback on Toyota’s plug-in hybrid technology while encouraging the development of a dedicated public access charging infrastructure. On average, fuel consumption was reduced by 46% when compared to gasoline vehicles of similar size. This considerable reduction was obtained with an average charging frequency of 1.1 times a day. In fact, the project conclusively proves that users that recharge more often benefit from significantly higher reduction in fuel consumption than users who recharged less. On top of reduced fuel consumption for the user, the environment benefits from a larger share of zero emission pure electric driving. Up to 61% of CO2 emissions can be reduced compared to conventional gasoline cars of similar size. Michel Gardel, Vice-President of Communications, External and Environment Affairs at Toyota Motor Europe, said: “Thanks to the citizens of Strasbourg who participated in the project, Toyota was able to gather such valuable data which we will use to further promote plug-in hybrid technology. Toyota sees plug-in hybrid technology as the best environmental mobility solution currently available and an important step in the development of the ultimate zero emissions car. We want to make the technology even more accessible for widespread adoption.”

Iberdrola and SEAT sign collaboration agreement on electric mobility tests SEAT has reached an agreement with IBERDROLA whereby today it has handed over one of its electric test vehicles to the Spanish utility company. The car manufacturer has provided an Altea XL Electric Ecomotive, the first Spanish allelectric car. Over the forthcoming months the utility company is also expected to take delivery of a León TwinDrive Ecomotive plugin hybrid within the framework of the same collaboration project. Thus, IBERDROLA is continuing into the second test stage of fleet tests implemented by SEAT to optimise electric car performance. Aitor Moso, IBERDROLA’s Commercial Director, has taken delivery of the test prototype at the utility company’s headquarters in Madrid from André Koropp, Automotive Institutions Manager at SEAT. Moso pointed out that this initiative will provide IBERDROLA with the opportunity to get in-depth knowledge of the performance of this kind of vehicle. “Together with a leading innovative company like SEAT, we shall be able to bring about new developments so as to improve recharging systems for electric cars, and continue to offer solutions so as to make electric mobility a reality, with groundbreaking and sustainable business innovations”. André Koropp highlighted the su-

stainable management of IBERDROLA, and underscored the ultimate aim of SEAT’s test drives: “IBERDROLA is a company with strong environmental values in all its activities. For this reason, its participation in the assessment stage makes SEAT’s electromobility project fully meaningful, a project that aims to make a contribution to environmental improvement through sustainable mobility and a reduction in CO2 emissions”. Six IBERDROLA employees will volunteer for the test drives, each of them for a three-month period throughout 2013. During this time SEAT’s Technical Center will be provided with information about speed, acceleration, battery status and recharging habits. Together with the personal appraisal and input from the drivers, the technical data will be helpful in assessing the performance of the electric cars and will detect possible points for improvement before going on to full-scale production. During this second stage of electric vehicle hand-overs to company and institutional fleets - in which other organizations such as the utility company Endesa, and the Port of Barcelona are already collaborating - SEAT will be analysing driving habits in comparison with internal combustion engine cars.

Following the global launch of the 12C and 12C Spider, McLaren Automotive has now launched its bespoke pre-owned car programme, McLaren Qualified. The new service makes entry to the McLaren ownership experience more accessible, with the added peace of mind that each and every vehicle has been checked by a McLaren trained technician, and brought up to date with the latest upgrades. Attention to detail is key with everything at McLaren. Even during the build phase, every McLaren is different and, for this reason, at each stage along the production line, each 12C and 12C Spider is subjected to rigorous tests and validation checks to ensure that everything is how it should be. Buying a Qualified 12C or 12C Spider will offer peace of mind knowing that, on returning to McLaren, this same attention to detail is carried through to the Qualified programme. McLaren technicians undertake a comprehensive bumper-to-bumper qualification check. This means that each new owner can be safe in the knowledge that their McLaren has been fully qualified and updated to the latest specification, so it is as good, if not better, than when it first left the McLaren Production Centre.

Hyundai Motor Announces 2013 1Q Business Results

MINI expands its international production network: local production begins in India The BMW Group is extending its international production network by additional local production plants for select MINI models. For the first time since the relaunch of the brand in 2001, preparations are under way for the local production of MINI cars for several growth markets outside Europe. As a result, cars from the British brand will be rolling off assembly lines beyond Europe for the first time later this year. Local production for the MINI Countryman is currently being prepared at the BMW plant in Chennai (formerly Madras), which meets the same stringent quality standards applied to all production of BMW Group models. The new MINI assembly facility has been brought on stream just a year after the start of MINI sales in India and will help to meet the steadily increasing demand for MINI cars in the Indian market. The first models to be locally produced in Chennai will be the MINI Cooper D Countryman and the MINI One Countryman.

Hyundai Motor Company announced 2013 first-quarter earning results. Despite various unfavorable internal and external factors, its continued sales growth overseas led to a 6.0 percent increase in sales revenue, compared to the same period last year. For the first three months of 2013, sales revenue rose 6.0 percent to 21.37 trillion won (auto: 17.66 trillion / finance and others: 3.70 trillion) from a year earlier, thanks to strong sales outside Korea and the addition of a subsidiary, Hyundai KEFICO. However, operating profit and net profit fell 10.7 percent and 14.9 percent to 1.87 trillion won and 2.88 trillion won (including non-controlling interest), respectively, mainly because of increased costs due to a weaker currency and increased one-time provisions. Hyundai sold 1,171,804 units globally (Korea: 153,728 / overseas: 1,018,076) during the first quarter this year, a 9.2 percent increase from a year earlier. While its sales in Korea fell 0.7 percent from the same period a year ago, its overseas sales rose 10.9 percent to 1,018,076 units, offsetting the

decline in the domestic market. Hyundai’s production volume at its Korean plants declined during the first quarter due to some production stoppages on weekends, which increased fixed costs. However, once this issue is resolved, coupled together with a more stable outlook on currency exchange rates and Hyundai’s ongoing robust sales in overseas markets such as China and Brazil, the company’s earnings are forecast to improve going forward. Hyundai forecasts that major auto markets, including some emerging markets, will keep posting slower growth amid fiercer competition and uncertain business environments. Nevertheless, Hyundai aims to strengthen its fundamentals through qualitative growth and quality management. To do so, Hyundai plans to launch local strategic models, reinforce sales and service networks, as well as carry out aggressive marketing activities. Such efforts have already been in progress, posting significant results. The HB20, which rolled off Hyundai’s new Brazilian plant since October last year, won five major local awards including the 2013 Brazilian Car of the Year. By strengthening its dealer network, Hyundai’s market shares in European and Indian markets are on the rise. In the U.S., cumulative sales of the Elantra exceeded 2 million units since it launched in the market in 1991, due to differentiated marketing strategies based on enhanced quality.

Volkswagen strengthens position in global markets

BMW Group sales reach all-time high in March The BMW Group sold more vehicles in March than in any other month in its history. The company sold a total of 191,269 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles in the past month, exceeding the previous all-time high in March last year (185,741 units / +3.0%). Sales for the year to the end of March reached a record 381,404 vehicles, an increase of 7.0% over the first three months of last year. The BMW 3 Series had an excellent first quarter with 109,279 vehicles delivered (up 19.9%). Growth in the first quarter was also driven by the BMW X1, with sales climbing 27.6% to 37,680 vehicles. A total of 31,763 MINI brand vehicles were delivered worldwide to customers in March. The slight decrease in the first quarter (around -2.0%) is attributed to the four-week closure of the MINI Oxford plant for renovations at the beginning of the year. The all-new MINI Paceman, which was launched last month, is expected to boost momentum in global sales for the brand. Rolls-Royce: Following record figures in 2012, Rolls-Royce motor cars delivered to customers in the first quarter were -16.6% (642) compared to the previous year. This is within the company’s planning cycle.

The Volkswagen Group further strengthened its position in the global markets in the first three months of fiscal year 2013, despite the challenging conditions and intense competition. Including China, deliveries increased by 4.8 per cent to 2.3 million vehicles worldwide. The Group’s share of the global passenger car market rose year-on-year to 12.6 per cent (12.2 per cent). ‘We made a healthy start to the year, but the coming months will be anything but easy. The current environment is definitely a tough challenge for the entire industry,’ said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, in Wolfsburg on Monday. ‘The Volkswagen Group’s strong, broad positioning is our greatest strength. And this is paying off, particularly when times are difficult,’ stressed Winterkorn.

Sales revenue in the first three months amounted to €46.6 billion (€47.3 billion). Operating profit was down on the high prior-year level at €2.3 billion (€3.2 billion). The consolidated operating profit does not include the €1.2 billion (€848 million) share of the operating profit of the Chinese joint

ventures. These companies are included using the equity method and are therefore reflected in the financial result. Profit before tax amounted to €2.7 billion (€4.2 billion). The prior-year figure had been positively influenced by the remeasurement of the Porsche options. Profit after tax was €1.9 billion (€3.1 billion).
