Bentley’s fastest four-seat ... The Continental GT Speed Convertible, Bentley’s new open-top performance flagship - and the world’s fastest four-seat convertible - will make its international debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It shares its powertrain specification with its Bentley stablemate the GT Speed coupé. The 625 PS (616 bhp) twin-turbocharged, 48-valve, W12 engine powers the new convertible to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.4 s.) and onto a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h). Nought to 100 mph (160 km/h) is despatched in only 9.7 seconds. Peak torque – an impressive 800 Nm (590 lb.ft) – is reached at just 2000 revs/min and maintains that level through to 5000 revs/ min for effortless, refined performance at all times. The latest ME17 engine management system, capable of performing 180 million individual calculations per second, provides enhanced turbocharger control and torque management, enhancing driveability. convertible features an energy recuperation system. Together with a close-ratio, quick-shifting eightspeed transmission, this has resulted in a 15 per cent improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions compared with the first generation Speed, with a commensurate increase in tank range. With torsional stiffness a class-leading 22,500 Nm/ degree, the bodyshell of the Continental GT Speed convertible is exceptionally rigid, laying the perfect foundation for a more engaging driving experience. The aluminium double-wishbone front suspension and trapezoidal multi-link rear setup feature revised air suspension springs and dampers for improved agility and body control with little sacrifice in ride comfort. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is optimised for the new engine management system to deliver both outstanding safety and greater driver involvement.
Wide range of premieres to be shown by BMW The North American International Auto Show 2013 in Detroit will see BMW presenting visitors with new models now entering series production and pioneering vehicle concepts. With its flowing elegance and powerful presence, the new BMW 4 Series (in the pictures), celebrating its world premiere in Detroit, represents one of the best examples of aesthetic and dynamic appeal in the premium segment. The new BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe is visibly larger than the BMW 3 Series Coupe in terms of length, width and wheelbase, while the roofline is considerably lower. Headlined by these balanced proportions, the new BMW Coupe embodies a development curve at its zenith. BMW M will also unveil a third body variant of the BMW M6 high-performance sports car for the first time. The impressive potential of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is immediately apparent. Familiar M features underscore the car’s bespoke styling inside and out. Under the bonnet lies a V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developing 412 kW/560 hp and peak torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft). This impressive power is channelled to the rear wheels via a sevenspeed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. Other features include the Active M Differential at the rear axle, an M-specific chassis, variable-ratio hydraulic

steering and a high-performance compound braking system. New exterior features, detailed interior refinements, a new equipment package and a new entry-level engine variant allow the BMW Z4 to make an even more attractive and innovative case for itself in Detroit. Three new body colours are available exclusively with the Design Pure Traction option, which is also new. Meanwhile, black and orange tones create a particularly absorbing contrast of colours in the interior. Additional scope for individualisation is provided by new 17-inch and 18-inch light-alloy wheels and the optional M Sport package. And there is also the arrival of a new model variant to report; the BMW Z4 sDrive18i is powered by a 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology developing 115 kW/156 hp. This new entry point to the Z4 range can also be ordered with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Audi RS 6 Avant: high-performance sports car for everyday use In the new Audi RS 6 Avant, the twin- turbo V8 delivers confidence-inspiring power in every driving situation from its displacement of 3,993 cc. Peak output of 412 kW (560 hp) is reached between 5,700 and 6,700 rpm, with a constant 700 Nm (516.29 lb-ft) of torque available between 1,750 and 5,500 rpm. The 4.0 TFSI delivers a sporty, full-throated sound. Switchable flaps in the exhaust system make the sound even fuller, if desired. The powerful twin-turbo V8 accelerates the new Audi RS 6 Avant from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in a bestin-segment 3.9 seconds. In the standard configuration, top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This is increased to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) with the optional Dynamic package. With the Dynamic plus package, Audi reigns in the engine only upon reaching 305 km/h (189.52 mph). According to the European driving cycle, the high-performance Avant consumes on average just 9.8 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.00 US mpg). Among the factors contributing to this figure are the new, standard start-stop system and innovative thermal management. Fuel consumption has been reduced by roughly 40 percent compared to the previous model. One pioneering efficiency technology in the new Audi RS 6 Avant is the cylinder on demand (COD) system. At low to intermediate loads and engine speeds, it shuts down the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8. The 4.0 TFSI then runs as a four-cylinder engine until the driver accelerates more strongly again. The COD technology reduces ECE fuel consumption by roughly five percent.
The 4.0 TFSI is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic featuring shortened shift times. The automatic transmission offers D and S modes. Drivers who wish to shift for themselves can use the shift paddles on the steering wheel or the selector lever, which sports a unique RS design. The new RS 6 Avant is the first RS model from Audi to come standard with a specifically tuned air suspension. The dynamic setup of the RS 6 adaptive air suspension lowers the body by 20 millimeters (0.79 in). Audi also offers the tauter sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) as an alternative to the RS 6 adaptive air suspension. Concerning the brakes, the four internally vented discs feature a weight-saving wave design with a wave-like outer contour. The front discs measure 390 millimeters (15.35 in) in diameter and are gripped by black, sixpiston calipers. Customers can also opt for red brake calipers. Also available as an option are carbon fiberceramic brake discs measuring 420 millimeters (16.54 in) in diameter. The new Audi RS 6 Avant comes standard with high-gloss, 20-inch, forged wheels in a seven twin-spoke design. The new Audi RS 6 Avant weighs roughly 100 kilograms (220.46 lb) lighter than its predecessor. Numerous RS-specific design details underscore the distinctive appearance of the high-performance Avant. Two optional appearance packages – Matte Aluminum or Carbon – further customize the look and include such things as quattro badges on the central front air inlet. The new Audi RS 6 Avant is available in nine exterior colors, including the exclusive shade Daytona Gray matte.

Preview: Ferrari’s most powerful car
AUTO NEWS JANUARY
Ferrari is close to launch its most powerful road car ever: a gasoline-electric hybrid that replaces the limited-edition Enzo. The new model (at the moment known as F150) should feature a V-12 aspirated direct-injection gasoline engine combined with an electic motor, allowing this new Ferrari to deliver around 900 hp. The Enzo replacement will be the most innovative and technologically advanced Ferrari ever built and will be the direct competitor of McLaren P1 and Porsche 918, two other GT hybrid cars. A preview of the carbon fibre chassis was showcased at the Paris auto show in autumn suggesting that Enzo’s successor will feature gullwing doors. The technology and materials used come directly from Ferrari’s long experience in Formula 1 racing allowing the chassis to be 20 percent lighter than the Enzo’s chassis though torsional rigidity has been increased 27 percent and beam stiffness is up by 22 percent. The F150 could debut at the Geneva auto show in March, but it is not ruled out that Ferrari could choose to showcase the new vehicle at the Shanghai auto show later in April.

Preview: first Qoros model set to debut in Geneva Founded in 2007, Qoros is a China based automotive company operating international engineering and design studios in Shanghai as well as in Graz, Austria, and Munich, Germany. It currently constructs a new state of the art production facility in Changshu City, Jiangsu Province. Making its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show (7-17 March 2013), the Qoros GQ3 goes on sale in China in the second half of 2013, with the first cars arriving in Europe later in the year. The GQ3’s styling introduces a brand identity that will make every future model instantly recognizable as a Qoros. The GQ3 has a sporty, elegant profile with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, a coupé-like silhouette and a roof that flows smoothly into the strong rear quarters. While horizontal lines emphasize the car’s impressive stature – at 1839 mm, it is one of the widest cars in its class – a striking swage line rises dynamically from the headlamps via the door handles to the rear lights. A prominent matt aluminium strip above each side sill adds to the visual stretch of the side profile, while muscular arches – accommodating alloy wheels up to 19-inch in size – and the car’s wide track reinforce its purposeful stature. The face of the GQ3 sets the template for the Qoros model family, with wide headlamp units extending into the flanks of the car, framing the central upper grille at the same height. Horizontal LED bars feature at the upper edge of the headlights and in the distinctive rear light clusters. The standard alloy wheels feature a triple-split eightspoke design, which will become another signature

design element for the Qoros brand. The GQ3 will offer generous interior space, and the horizontally arranged ‘floating’ dashboard will further enhance the impression of space in the cabin. Prominently occupying the GQ3’s central console is the innovative eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that represents an automotive industry first. The advanced software, technology and graphics were designed and developed in-house to safely manage information displays for minimal driver distraction and to optimize ease-of-use while on the move. The intelligent and powerful package was created specifically with the young, aspirational, always-connected target Qoros customer firmly in mind. Replacing the array of switches and buttons that blights many car interiors, the capacitive touchscreen enables users to manage entertainment, navigation, ‘Cloud’ connectivity and in-car networking functions with intuitive finger ‘swipe’ movements that will be familiar to smartphone users. The Qoros GQ3 is engineered to achieve maximum European and Chinese crash test ratings thanks to advanced safety technology. The car’s structural architecture incorporates the latest developments in the field of crash safety. The precise arrangement of supporting structures, as well as large-scale deformation zones, prevent intrusions into the passenger cell during collisions. In addition, occupants are protected by a comprehensive package of safety measures, including front, side and curtain airbags, as well as highly-effective seatbelt restraint systems.

Europe Germany BMW Car Hotspot LTE The newly launched BMW Car Hotspot LTE is now bringing LTE (Long Term Evolution) high-speed mobile internet access to the road. Just like a router at home, the BMW Car Hotspot LTE provides internet access for mobile client devices. Passengers can enjoy highspeed internet surfing on as many as eight different mobile devices simultaneously. The connection procedure of a mobile device is even simpler if the mobile device is equipped with an NFC (Near Field Communication) interface. In this case, the WLAN connection is automatically established simply
by briefly placing the NFC-capable device on top of the BMW Car Hotspot LTE. This is the first time NFC functionality has been offered in the car. And even if the customer’s device is not NFC-capable, the BMW Car Hotspot LTE also offers WPS (WiFi Protect Setup) as a further easy solution for establishing a WLAN connection. Using this method it is possible to establish a secure connection between the hotspot and a mobile device situated within a range of three metres simply by pressing the hotspot’s “connect” button once and without entering a PIN. A built-in battery pack means that the BMW Car Hotspot LTE can even be used outside the vehicle. Away from an external power supply the hotspot can provide internet access for about an hour. The built-in battery can then be recharged in about 30 minutes, either at a power socket or at the docking station.
North America United States Chrysler improves customer experience in the service lane Chrysler Group will be the first automaker to provide factory-connected tablet technology in its dealership service lanes. Mopar’s new wiADVISOR™ technology will enable customers to cruise through dealer service lanes much faster. The brand’s new wiADVISOR (short for wireless service advisor) system uses a small wireless device that service advisors briefly plug into a vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port in the service lane. Vehicle data is then downloaded and transmitted to the service advisor’s tablet computer. The tablet simultaneously captures and presents the service advisor with all information specific to that customer and their vehicle, and connects with Chrysler Group’s engineering databases. All ownership information, vehicle service history, vehicle system updates, and factory-required maintenance are literally in the hands of the service advisor. We could say that the wiADVISOR platform offers customers a similar experience to checking into a high-end hotel that already has guest information and preferences on file. No time is lost filling out forms or remembering license plate numbers. Future integration will incorporate even more Mopar products and services into the wiADVISOR platform,
programs including Mopar Vehicle Protection Plans, Mopar Tire Works and Mopar Accessories. The wiADVISOR platform is now available across Chrysler Group’s U.S. dealership network with plans for global implementation.

Europe Germany Mercedes-Benz emergency call system available in 19 countries from 2013 In June 2012 Mercedes-Benz launched eCall, the vehicle emergency call system. In the event of a serious accident, the emergency services can be notified automatically and be informed of the precise location of the accident and the car model within just a few minutes. The Mercedes-Benz emergency call system is standard in the latest version of the COMAND Online multimedia system. If the airbags or belt tensioners are deployed and COMAND Online is linked to a mobile phone, the precise GPS position of the vehicle and the vehicle identification number (VIN) are sent via text message (SMS) to the emergency call centre of the Bosch Communication Center, and at the same time the location data are transmitted via DTMF (dual-tone multi-frequency signalling). Even if the occupants are unconscious, or for example are on holiday and do not know exactly where they are, the Communication Center can inform the emergency services quickly and precisely. In addition, the vehicle will quickly set up a call to the Bosch Communication Center. And a particularly practical feature which can be helpful in an emergency: the call is not conducted in the language of the country, but in the language which the driver has programmed in to COMAND Online. On 1 June 2012 the automatic emergency call system was introduced in nine
European countries – Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. From 1 January 2013, ten more followed: Norway, Finland, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal, Luxemburg and Malta. As part of the eSafety initiative, the European Commission has ruled that by 2015 eCall technology should be available in all new cars.

FIAT 500 L THE ICON OF ITALIAN STYLE IS GROWING
If the 500 is the super-compact car perfect for young people, the 500L expresses the taste of Italian style with a distinctive look and interprets Fiat’s unique ability to conceive and design cars which are innovative in substance and in form. Substance turns into the concept of “space-efficiency” that distinguishes all of the most innovative Fiats in history
According to the latest research, 4.1 metres is the average length of cars sold in Europe. It is a standard size that allows you to travel and easily move around in traffic. But THE 500L competitive advantage is that with only 7 cm more than a Fiat Punto, the Fiat 500L easily accommodates five passengers with their five suitcases, without ever compromising passenger room. Suffice it to say that the Fiat 500L boasts the best passenger volume index in the segment: with front and rear volumes combined, passengers have a space of 3.17 cubic metres available. One of the 500L’s peculiarities pursued since the earliest packaging planning stages is greater interior volume, obtained by the meticulous compacting of the mechanical elements shared by designers and engineers alike. If the general lines of the vehicle’s architecture follows the “cab forward” principles, from which reduction of the body and bonnet section up front is derived to the benefit of more available interior space - especially at the height of the waistline and roof - it is above all the “empathetic” vocation of the 500L’s design that exalts the overall vehicle ergonomics. The Fiat 500L also boasts an extensive view of the outside and
CLIP The Fiat 500L is produced at the Kragujevac (Serbia) plant, inaugurated last April after three years of intense and continuous work carried out to upgrade the infrastructures, build new production departments and install advanced machinery and production systems. Over 1 billion Euros have been invested from 2010 to today, in addition to Fiat’s best professional resources. 2500 workers and suppliers took part in the plant’s reconstruction. In addition, 1,100,000 hours of staff training were provided to create a new industrial culture. The new Kragujevac plant production capacity exceeds 700 cars per day thanks to the new design and structure.
the greatest brightness of its category as it has the largest roof of its segment - 1.5 square metres of glass surface and its windscreen pillars have been cleverly divided and tapered to offer clear advantages in terms of active and passive safety as well. The glass roof floods the passenger compartment with plenty of light and it is available in two versions: electric roof or Skydome. Also the colour range, with no less than 11 body colours, is record-breaking for its segment. You get to have 333 possible combinations if 3 different roof colours, 4 trim levels (Pop, Pop Star, Easy and Lounge) and 3 alloy rim colours are added. This new model is leader in its category in terms of ratio between external dimensions - 415 cm long, 178 cm wide, 166 cm high and 261 wheelbase - and interior space understood both as passenger compartment andluggage compartment, which boasts a capacity of almost 400 litres. The numerous adjustments of the seats also contribute to top-level on board comfort. They can be adjusted on every axis using 8 different modes; the rear seat ensures the same versatility. It has a 60/40 split folding backrest that can be adjusted longitudinally and separately in 12 positions.
FOCUS - FIAT 500L
A “light” engine range At launch, the Fiat 500L will propose three efficient engines distinguished by their lower polluting emissions and CO2 levels, corresponding to real economic benefit in everyday use for the customer: two petrol (105 HP 0.9 TwinAir and 95 HP 1.4 litres) engines and one turbodiesel (85 HP 1.3 MultiJet 2) engine. In particular, the 105 HP Turbo TwinAir engine (very brilliant in its performance: top speed of 180 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 12.3 seconds) boasts record-breaking emissions in its segment of only 112 g/km. The new development of the multi-award-winning Fiat two-cylinder engine, the TwinAir is at the top of the segment in terms of fuel consumption and emissions thanks to its low displacement and inclusion of a high-efficiency turbocharger. The small petrol engine with 2-cylinder architecture combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox develops 105 HP at 5,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 145 Nm at just 2,000 rpm. A genuine reference on the low displacement diesel engine scene, the 1.3 16V MultiJet 2 engine of the new Fiat 500L has been refined to further improve its brilliant performance and low fuel consumption. The adoption of a small refined variable geometry turbocharger, which allows the engine to deliver a higher torque at low speeds, makes it possible to match a 5-speed manual gearbox with long ratios (downspeeding concept) that without
penalizing performance significantly contributes to curbing fuel consumption. The 1.3 16V MultiJet 2 engine of the new Fiat 500L develops 85 HP at 3,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 200 Nm at just 1,500 rpm. The maximum speed is 165 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 14.9 seconds. The new Fiat 500L 1.3 16V MultiJet 2 consumes just 4.2 litres/100 km with 110 g/km of CO2 emissions in the homologation combined cycle. Solid and reliable, the 1.4 16V of the Fire family is the entry petrol engine of the new Fiat 500L. It delivers 95 HP at 6,000 rpm and reaches a maximum torque of 127 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the engine has a 4-cylinder in-line configuration with a double overhead camshaft system that directly controls the valves. The new Fiat 500L equipped with the 1.4 16V Fire engine reaches a top speed of 170 km/h with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.8 seconds. Its fuel consumption in the homologation combined cycle is just 6.2 litres/100 km with CO2 emissions staying within 145 g/km. Furthermore the 500L will be even more ‘eco-friendly’ due to the cleanest fuel available today: methane. Natural Power will debut in 2013 on the Turbo TwinAir engine. It combines - in a single product - the cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness of the methane fuel system with the power of the Turbo TwinAir.
Easy, technological and protective The 500L body has a high level of torsional rigidity 111,700 daNm/rad - that contributes to optimum control of the geometry but this car lets you experience relaxing moments also because of the layout of its suspensions (MacPherson up front, torsion beam in the rear) that have been updated to ensure control and comfort at top levels. To guarantee the protection of the passengers, the new 500L combines a body designed according to the most modern criteria with active and passive safety content that ensures its optimum performance, so much so as to be at the top of its category. Specifically, the new car has a safety cell structure complete with double pillars in front designed in line with current U.S. regulations as far as crash tests and dimensional specifications of the materials used are concerned. The new 500L’s standard equipment includes front and window airbags - side airbags and knee bags are available on request - front headlights with DRL (Daytime Running Lights) function and fog lights with the self-adaptive cornering function. The model also comes standard with ABS with BAS (Brake Assist System) and the sophisticated ESC (Electronic Stability Control) that intervenes in conditions close to the limit, when the car’s stability is at risk, and helps the driver control it. Lastly, the brand-new “City Brake Control” system is worthy of a detailed look. Becoming available after the launch, the innovative device is capable of recognising obstacles in front of the car and of braking automatically when the driver fails to do so to avoid crashing into them. Depending on certain parameters (road surface conditions, dynamics and trajectory of the vehicle, position of the obstacles and condition of the tyres, etc.), the intervention of the LSCM system can avoid impact completely or minimise the consequences of a possible impact.
CLIP An absolutely new product on the automotive scene, the Fiat 500L is the first standard production car to offer an authentic espresso coffee machine with Lavazza ‘A Modo Mio’ pod system that is perfectly integrated in the passenger compartment with a deck Fiat has specially designed for it. PORSCHE CAYMAN BUILT FOR DRIVING THROUGH BENDS
The new Porsche Cayman sets new standards in its class for driving performance with a longer wheelbase, all-round new chassis and lower weight. The new Cayman is up to 30 kg lighter, depening on the specific model and equipment, and it consumes up to 15 per cent less fuel per 100 km than the previous model – despite higher engine and driving performance.
The new Cayman is more distinctive than ever. Its proportions are new and yet it is clearly a Porsche sport coupé. Its styling is marked by precise lines and razor-sharp sculpted edges. They emphasise the car’s low, extended silhouette with the windscreen shifted forward and the roof line that reaches far back. Typical of the more advanced styling is the shoulder line, which runs from the wings – which flare strongly upwards – towards the rear side panels. Especially expressive and characteristic are the dynamic recesses in the doors, which guide induction air into the distinctive air scoops on the rear side panels and then directly to the engine. From the front end, the new Cayman is marked by its dominant cooling air inlets, which increase in
size towards the sides of the car. Integrated in them, far outboard, are the round front lights with fourpoint daytime running lights or position lights – an unmistakable identifying feature of the new Cayman. Just as unique to the new generation of the sport coupé are the large, low rear lid made of aluminium and the rear section with its wrap-around edges. At the upper end of the rear window, an LED brake light spanning the entire window width warns traffic behind. Mounted directly to the rear lid is the thin blade of the rearspoiler, which – in contrast to that of the Boxster – is higher and deploys at a steeper angle. The overall appearance of the Cayman is more independent than before, and it is well-differentiated from the previous model.
FOCUS - PORSCHE CAYMAN
Engine and transmission Porsche is implementing two exceptional sport engines in the Cayman, which combine ample torque with high power in the upper engine speed range. One consequence of this high-revving concept is that it enabled a 0.2 litre reduction in base engine displacement compared to the previous model, and yet it has a higher power output. With its specific power of 101.6 hp/litre, the 2.7-litre engine is the first Cayman to break the magic 100 hp per litre displacement barrier for sports car engines. Not only were peak powers increased by 10 hp to 275 hp (202 kW) in the Cayman and by five hp to 325 hp (239 kW) in the S-model; their two power curves also lie above those of the previous engines, which means that overall the six-cylinder engines produce more power at identical engine revs. The engines of both models are up to 15 per cent more fuel-efficient due to their petrol direct injection, thermal management, electrical system recuperation and auto start/stop function. Key components for improving efficiency are electrical system recuperation and map-controlled thermal management of engine cooling. In electrical system recuperation, the battery is charged more intensively during braking and coasting phases. In turn, alternator charge current can be reduced when
the battery is fully charged. This reduces the load of the internal combustion engine in acceleration phases, because it does not need to output as much power to charge the battery. Thanks to intelligent control of the combined engine and transmission cooling systems, both engines reach their operating temperatures more quickly, which results in better combustion under part-load with less friction. The transmission is also crucial for driving performance, comfort and fuel economy. In the new Cayman models, a standard six-speed manual transmission is employed; its gear ratios are optimally laid out for the engine’s unique characteristics. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is also available as an option. It offers seven gears and shifting without any interruption in propulsive power, and it enables faster sprints and better fuel economy. The new Cayman models now offer a Sport button as standard that lets the driver choose between sport-oriented tuning and comfortable tuning that is optimised for fuel efficiency. In Sport mode, the electronic engine management system makes the engine respond even snappier, with more direct dynamic response of the engine. In vehicles with PDK, automatic mode results in later upshifts and earlier downshifts.
Chassis and brakes More than ever, the interplay of the mid-engine concept and chassis tuning assures it the top position in its class. The fundamental geometry creates ideal conditions for this performance: a 60 mm longer wheelbase for greater stability at very high speeds, a wide track width at both axles for additional driving stability and agility in bends and larger diameter tyres for even better road grip up to the limits of performance. Porsche engineers placed high priority not only with the goal of improving driving performance and agility, but to simultaneously improve comfort and everyday practicality as well. The new generation of the optional PASM active damping system extends the driving performance range of the Cayman more sustainably than ever. The reason: four additional vertical sensors at the front and rear wheels enable even better and more finely tuned control. Optimally controlled damping improves the vehicle’s road grip, offering greater driving stability, more comfort, enhanced performance and shorter braking distances. Just as before, the driver can use the PASM chassis control button on the centre console to choose between the two modes “Normal” and “Sport”. The system also acts as a function of the specific driving situation, so that driving fun is not compromised: in smooth motorway driving, for example, only moderate damping forces are required. In a sporty style of driving, on the other hand, high damping forces improve road grip and car body control. An electromechanical power steering is also replacing the previous Cayman hydraulic system. Building upon the capabilities of the PASM chassis, the optional Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) system is
also able to increase the driving performance potential of the Cayman. Essentially, PTV improves the vehicle’s steering response and steering precision by targeted brake interventions at the rear wheel located on the inside of a bend. The braking torque is activated as soon as the steering wheel is turned. The results: improved performance in bends. Because of the car’s enhanced driving performance, the brake system of the Cayman has been made more powerful as well. Along with equipping the system with stiffer front brake callipers, optimising brake pad design and providing a larger brake contact surface, improvements were made in cooling the brake discs as well. Furthermore, the new Cayman S has larger front brake discs that originate from the 911 Carrera. As in previous models, the exceptionally high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system is available as a motorsport-proven option. With this system, 350 mm diameter brake discs are used at the front and rear wheels of all models. The PCCB brake callipers are also painted yellow, and a new six-piston calliper from the 911 Carrera is used at the front wheels. The new Cayman models ride on wheels and tyres that are now one inch larger in diameter than on the previous model. Standard now are customised 18- and 19-inch Cayman wheels, which give the sport coupés better lateral stability and handling properties. Optional wheels for the new Cayman include the alternative 20inch Carrera S wheels, 20-inch Carrera Classic wheels in bi-colour look and the new 20-inch Sport Techno wheels from the Exclusive programme.
FOCUS - PORSCHE CAYMAN
Car body The body of the new Cayman is an entirely new development based on the body-in-white of the Boxster. The bottom line is that innovative lightweight body design with mixed aluminium-steel construction has reduced body-in-white weight by around 47 kg. At the same time, the car’s static torsional rigidity was boosted by 40 per cent. In its new lightweight body design, Porsche only uses steel where it is essential. On the other hand, wherever lightweight metals can be used, they are the preferred choice. Compared to the previous model, aerodynamic lift was further reduced at both axles, which leads to greater driving stability at high speeds. Among other features, a new front spoiler lip significantly reduces front axle lift. At the rear axle, the new rear wing combined with a spoiler lip running across the entire width also makes a crucial contribution towards reduced lift. The wing is optimally integrated in the rear body with a curved shape, and it can be deployed either automatically or manually. With its 40 per cent larger effective area, it generates more groundforce than the spoiler of the previous model, and it offers less resistance to the air flow. Interior and features The interior of the new Cayman continues along the lines of current Porsche sports car design and adds value to the sport coupé. In its new optional features
as well: for the first time, a high-end Burmester sound system can be ordered which is individually tuned for the Cayman. Other new and optional features that overcome class boundaries are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the keyless Entry & Drive system. An especially exclusive ambience is created by the optional bi-colour leather packages that can be delivered; the base colour agate grey may be combined with lime gold, gravel grey or amber orange. The centre console that ascends towards the front with its motorsport-like high-set gear shifter gives the driver the feeling of being more fully integrated in the interior. Controls for key vehicle operation functions and settings are arranged in logical groupings on the centre console. The new ergonomics of the Cayman and its more precise shifting now offer drivers even better conditions for quick and effortless gear shifts. The ascending centre console and the driver’s seat position ensure a short distance between the steering wheel and the gearshift lever. The standard CDR audio system with its seveninch touchscreen – that is centrally located further upwards – is very easy to see and offers convenient access to many different functions. The three classic round instruments of the Cayman model series with a centrally positioned tachometer and an ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel make the connection to a familiar cockpit environment. New is the high-
resolution 4.6-inch VGA multifunction screen in the instrument on the right. Along with the most important trip computer functions, it also includes a map display for the optional PCM with navigation module. The driver and passenger sit on new sport seats as the car’s new extended silhouette also increases the practical utility of the Cayman: the larger rear lid offers better access to the rear bootspace, and cargo capacity of the two-seater has been increased by 15 litres to 425 litres when loaded to the roof. The new top option among the sound systems is a special “made in Germany” system that Porsche developed for the Cayman together with Burmester. Based on experience acquired from systems in the Panamera, Cayenne and 911 Carrera, this new system attains a total acoustic power and sound quality that are excellent for the sports car segment. For Cayman models with Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), Porsche now offers a new upgrade option for driving convenience and safety: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that includes the safety function Porsche Active Safe (PAS). ACC operation is based on a radar sensor located in the middle of the front body panel, which acquires objects in the driving lane over a range of up to
200 metres. ACC maintains a speed-dependent distance to a vehicle ahead in traffic over four preselectable stages, and it automatically adjusts driving speed – up to a vehicle stop. This relieves the workload of drivers in traffic jam situations and in slow-moving traffic. PAS builds on this system and can help to avoid front-end collisions – even when ACC is switched off. It uses the front radar system to continually monitor traffic for much slower vehicles ahead.
CLIP Driving without car keys: Porsche Entry & Drive Porsche Entry & Drive is being offered for the first time in the class of the Cayman. The system enables keyless and convenient unlocking and locking of the doors and bootlid as well as engine starting. As soon as the driver touches the door handle, the Porsche Entry & Drive queries an access code that is saved in the key. If it is correct, the door is unlocked. Similarly, when the driver approaches the sensor zone at the front or rear of the car, the boot lid in that zone is unlocked and can be opened.
CLIP Sport Chrono package with dynamic transmission mounts
FOCUS - PORSCHE CAYMAN
The optional Sport Chrono package offers a very wide spread of gear ratios ranging from sporty tuning – e.g. for circuit courses – to ride comfort in everyday use. It also includes dynamic transmission mounts. It delivers the best possible drive-off acceleration in con junction with PDK and the Sport Plus button with the Launch Control function. This shortens the sprint from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 s compared to normal mode. The Sport Plus button also activates the PDK “race course” shifting strategy. For even better driving performance and ride comfort, the Sport Chrono package provides dynamic transmission mounts. They alter their stiffness and damping as a function of the specific driving situation. With a hard setting of the mounts, for example, the drivetrain’s moment of inertia is significantly reduced when steering into a bend and in quickly alternating bends, which minimises rear body press.

MISS OF THE MONTH
CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1
The Corvette roars into its 60th year
Corvette ZR1 is the fastest production model ever offered by General Motors, with a top speed of 205 mph. A supercharged, hand-assembled 6.2L LS9 engine and suite of advanced performance technologies, including Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Selective Ride Control, are the elements behind the highest-performing Corvette in history. That milestone is commemorated in 2013 with an available 60th Anniversary Design Package.
MISS OF THE MONTH - CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1
The Corvette ZR1’s fixed-roof body style optimizes body rigidity and mass. Low weight is also the benefit of the wide, carbon-fiber front fenders – with ZR1 specific dual ports – carbon-fiber hood with a raised, polycarbonate window, carbon-fiber roof panel, roof bow, front fascia splitter and rocker moldings. The ZR1’s curb weight is 3,353 pounds / 1,521 kg (dry weight of 3,183 pounds / 1,444 kg). The roof panel, roof bow, splitter and rocker moldings feature a visible carbon-fiber weave that’s covered with a UV-resistant clear coat. The exterior also is distinguished with a full-width rear spoiler with raised outboard sections and four large, stainless steel exhaust outlets. Twenty-spoke painted aluminum wheels – 19 x 10-inch in the front and 20 x 12-inch in the rear – are standard, with chrome-aluminum versions available. Corvette’s interior is inspired by the car’s dual-cockpit heritage. Seats that were introduced in 2012 deliver improved appearance, and larger bolsters on the seat back and cushion areas provide better driver support, especially in high-performance driving.
The supercharged LS9 6.2L small-block engine is the power behind the ZR1’s performance. A sixthgeneration Eaton supercharger helps the LS9 make big power and torque at lower rpm and carries it in a wide arc to 6,600 rpm, as it pushes enough air to help the engine maintain power through the upper levels of the rpm band – the area where supercharged performance tends to diminish. Backing the LS9 is a six-speed manual transmission and a twin-disc clutch that provides exceptional clamping power, while maintaining an easy clutch pedal effort. ZR1-specific gearing in the transmission provides a steep firstgear ratio that helps launch the car, and top speed is achieved in sixth gear. The twin-disc clutch system employs a pair of discs, which spread out the engine’s torque load over a wider area. The rear axle is also unique to the ZR1 and features asymmetrical axleshaft diameters – 33 mm on the right side and 40 mm on the left – that were developed after careful testing to provide optimal torque management. The axles are mounted on a more horizontal plane that correlates with the wider width of the rear wheels and tires.
CLIP …coming soon: the 2014 Corvette The precisely sculpted design of the all-new 2014 Corvette delivers more than just stunning good looks – every line, vent, inlet and surface has been optimized for performance. To develop the aerodynamic package, engineers started with data gleaned from years of on-track, high-speed performance from the Corvette Racing program. These techniques were applied to the production car using some of the industry’s most advanced computeraided modeling programs to predict and track airflow over, under and through the new Corvette’s body. Chevrolet will introduce the 2014 Corvette on Sunday, January 13, 2013.
MISS OF THE MONTH - CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1
Launch Control with Performance Traction Management (PTM) technology optimizes traction for greater and more consistent on-track performance. PTM system holds a predetermined engine speed while the driver pushes the throttle to the floor. That allows the driver to quickly release the clutch and the system modulates the engine torque 100 times per second to maximize the available traction.
Commensurate with the ZR1’s engine output is the braking system, headlined by Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors. The vented and cross-drilled rotors on the ZR1 measure 15.5 inches (394 mm) in diameter in the front and 15 inches (380 mm) diameter in the rear. The brakes are visible through the ZR1’s exclusive wheels: 20-spoke alloy rims that measure 19 x 10 inches in diameter in the front and 20 x 12 inches in the rear. A Sterling Silver paint finish is standard; chrome and black versions are optional. The ZR1 is built on an aluminum-intensive chassis and features an independent SLA front and rear suspensions, with aluminum upper and lower control arms. A magnesium cradle serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components. It is lighter than aluminum, yet incredibly strong, and helps improve the front-to-rear weight distribution, as do carbon-fiber front fenders and wheelhouses. ELECTRIC DREAMS
Some “minors” manufacturers are currently proposing some interesting electric products to the international market. If both the French cars Hexagon and Venturi are available for public and have already started their market sales campaign, the British Lightning seems very closed to start the production of its “muscle” electric coupé, while the Swiss Lampo is at the moment a pure technology exercise, looking for an industrial partner to commence the production.

Exagon Furtive-eGT: made for the era of sustainable development With its electric drivetrain and innovative solutions, the FurtiveeGT is simply surprising, not just in terms of performance alone, but in terms of the new driving sensations delivered by a grand tourer designed as an electric vehicle from A to Z. Exagon Motors set out to develop an exceptional electric sports car that would combine the best of their experience in electric motorsports (Electric Andros Trophy) with today’s cutting-edge technologies. The specifications drafted by Exagon Motors management established clear objectives: the Furtive-eGT had to combine exceptional performance with real day-to-day driveability. To achieve this versatility, Exagon worked with a number of leading European partners who brought their expertise to the project from the outset: Siemens, Saft, Michelin and Nokia.
CLIP The Furtive-eGT ships with an optional range extender. This takes the form of a small combustion engine of low cubic capacity that recharges the batteries when they reach their range limits. It does not drive the wheels, it acts solely as a generator. Pollutant emissions are therefore very low, since it is optimised to run at constant speed. The range extender increases the overall range of the Furtive-eGT to 807 km with 25l of fuel over a standard ECE15 cycle, or 734 km with 25l of fuel over a standard combined cycle.
THE GREEN SIDE - ELECTRIC DREAMS
The Furtive-eGT combines a sum of human expertise with technologies; it is an innovator in all areas, from its latest-generation Siemens motors and Saft batteries to its carbon body, running gear developed with Michelin, three-speed gearbox with seamless torque delivery, acoustics by Focal and man/machine multimedia interface. The Furtive-eGT is very much a car of its times, the era of digital cars and sustainable development, but it also reflects a long tradition in exceptional GTs. This longhaul traveller is a true 2+2, designed to comfortably seat four passengers with their luggage. The Furtive-
eGT is designed as a versatile car, combining the ride and performance of a quality sports model with the comfort of a grand tourer. The electric drivetrain delivers original driving sensations with the torque coming in immediately. With constant torque of 516 N.m between 0 and 5,000 rpm, the Furtive-eGT is capable of phenomenal acceleration, sprinting from 0 to 100 km in just 3.5s, with a top speed limited to 250 kph. As well as savouring the silence of this impressive performance, owners can take pleasure in owning a car with zero carbon emissions. Looking beyond figures, this is an experience that everybody should enjoy at least once in their lives. Designed by Exagon Motors, the Furtive-eGT is a car of classic, timeless beauty. It embodies a truly French approach to modern, prestige vehicles, far removed from passing trends and fashions. The Furtive-eGT is 4.46m. long with very short front and rear overhangs. The design is elegant and dynamic, while placing the emphasis squarely on aerodynamics. A car of pure, clean lines, the FurtiveeGT stands out from the crowd with distinctive features, such as the double-bubble roof, headlight signature and rear wings to optimise downforce.

Sporty, open, high-riding: the Venturi America Half sports car, half buggy, the America is the result of 10 years of development and technological innovation accomplished by Venturi. On mountain roads, dirt tracks through undergrowth, pebbly passages in arid areas or the seafront along a wild craggy shore, the America offers all the pleasure of the acceleration and power of a modern “muscle car” defying our allgas civilization. This new-era buggy is in fact a highpowered lightweight vehicle benefiting from a chassis specially designed to suit its particularly high body with an open cockpit offering a unique position for taking full advantage of the scenery. A luxury technological product, the America is also an acceleration vehicle symbolizing “cool green attitude”. The America is fitted with a VM300 motor which, with over 300 hp (+220 kW) and torque of 380 Nm, is the one of the most advanced electric motor ever designed for a car. To get the very best out of such a motor, a new 54 kWh battery pack has been developed (LIV10 Lithium Ion Polymer batteries), whose electronics (Battery Management System) have been entrusted
to Ventec, the leader in the field. The America offers a real range of up to 300 km. Thanks to its onboard charging system, it can be recharged using a standard electricity socket or a high-power triphase terminal for fast recharging. The first chassis specially designed to house a large volume of batteries, the carbon monocoque developed by Venturi ensures exceptional protection for its occupants ; the body is completed by two deformable cells positioned at the front and rear of the vehicle. A real synthesis of two exclusive automobile worlds, the America is both an electric sports car and an allterain leisure vehicle all in one. This “duality” ensures extraordinary versatility in terms of use. Its sports car performance, balance and road-holding, combined with its particularly high body and specific tyre mounting, ensure that it is equally at ease on steep trails and on the highway. This electric buggy offers the possibility of venturing off the beaten track while respecting the environment in terms of both noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
CLIP Produced in a limited series of 100 numbered models, “America” is actually assembled in France, in the “Manufacture de Véhicules Electriques” (MVE), the group’s assembly plant in La Sarthe. Lampo 3 GT: made in Switzerland After its predecessors LAMPO and LAMPO 2, LAMPO 3 - the third prototype of electric super sports car - is now developed by Protoscar. During the past 3 years, the LAMPOs have been finetuned together with the partner company EVTEC. The electric sports cars have been tested for more than 40.000km on circuits and streets all over Europe. Since the results are more than promising, LAMPO 3 could now be further developed in a micro series. With 3 BRUSA-motors outputting 570 HP and 900 Nm of torque, LAMPO3 is one of the most powerful full electric 2+2-seater in the world. It also is the first electric vehicle equipped with two different DC fast charging inlets, allowing for “Coffee&Charge” breaks. Dual DC inlet allows to recharge enough energy for up to 100km additional range within just 10 minutes, with every type of DCcharger you will find on the highways or at “petrol stations” in the close future. In fact, such DC-charger will be commercialized and installed on behalf of power utilities and petrol stations very soon in Switzerland and Europe. Compared to the first prototype LAMPO 3, important further technical developments have been prepared in order to meet the needs of the micro series: lighter and stiffer chassis have been designed (optimized for production by ThyssenKrupp System Engineering), a new 42 kWh battery pack supplied by Akasol Engineering will be introduced and the interior has been fully redesigned. LAMPO2 and LAMPO3 have been tested on the circuit of the famous Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, both prototypes participated to “Aria Nuova
2012” with Ecomotori.net from 24th to 27th May, 2012. Protoscar has started to verify the conditions to produce LAMPO3 with one strong industrial and financial partner. Finally a new “Swiss Made” car could hit the dealership floors, if a matching partner for financing, production, distribution and service of the vehicle will be found.

ASTON MARTIN a century of dream cars !
2013 sees Aston Martin celebrate its centenary with a year-long calendar of exceptional events. Founded in 1913 by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin as “Bamford & Martin LTD”, the company has developed into an iconic brand synonymous with luxury and elegance. 1914 saw the birth of the name “Aston Martin” acknowledging Robert Bamford’s success at the Aston Clinton Hillclimb in Buckinghamshire, England, where he had successfully raced their very first cars.
Bamford and Martin began their business in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews in London, becoming well known as providers of sporting machines to enthusiastic racers and discerning enthusiasts. In Aston Martin’s first 90 years the company built fewer than 15,000 cars. The open bodied two-seater sports specials of the pre-war years gave way to the David Brown era of the 1950s and beyond which saw the introduction of the legendary DB2/4, DB4, DB5, DB6 and DBS, before the V8 Vantage and Virage led Aston Martin to the DB7, original Vanquish and on into the modern era.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Aston Martin is proud of a long-term relationship with James Bond. The association began in 1964 with the film “Goldfinger” featuring an iconic DB5 and has continued to present day, with DBS making its first public appearance in Casino Royale when it smashed its way into the Guinness World Record books for ‘The Most Cannon Rolls In A Car’. In 2008, DBS made its second consecutive appearance in ‘Quantum of Solace’, which took the marques’ total to 10 Bond film appearances ... until 2012, where movie Skyfall saw the return of the original DB5 used in Goldfinger ... with all the gadgets working as they were brand new! Aston Martin DB5 Often billed as the “most famous car in the world”, James Bond’s gadget laden Silver Birch DB5 in Goldfinger is regarded by many as the most beautiful Aston Martin produced. The DB5 shares many similar traits to the DB4, however, DB5’s most substantial change occurred under the bonnet. The engine capacity was enlarged to 4 litres by increasing the bore to 96mm. The car had three SU carburettors, as fitted to the outgoing DB4 Vantage, and also shared the latter’s fared in headlamps. Significant too was the introduction of a full synchromesh ZF 5 speed gearbox.

Aston Martin’s centenary celebrations
15 January 2013 marks the official incorporation of the company 100 years ago and to commemorate the historic occasion the oldest surviving Aston Martin – A3 – and a stunning new Vanquish, the brand’s ultimate GT, will take their places at a photo call at Henniker Mews in Chelsea – the original home of Aston Martin – where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled. In the evening of 15 January the Aston Martin Heritage Trust Walter Hayes Memorial Lecture will take place in central London with A3 and Vanquish again guest starring alongside actor Sir John Standing as Lionel Martin, telling the story of his early days and his experience of making the first Aston Martin in Lionel Martin’s own words. The centrepiece of the celebrations will be a week-long festival of all things Aston Martin which is set to take place from 15 July to 21 July next year. The Centenary Week will include open house activities at Aston Martin’s exclusive Gaydon headquarters, including factory-based events and driving tours.
The week will culminate in a 1,000-guest ‘birthday party’ on Saturday 20 July and a spectacular Centenary Concours event in central London on Sunday 21 July. This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in central London in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club. It will feature the 100 most iconic cars in a concours display and up to 1,000 Aston Martins forming the largest gathering in the 100-year history of the great British marque. A number of centenary drives will also be held to coincide with the birthday party and the concours event. These will include a James Bond-themed route around England and Wales taking in a number of the iconic Bond film locations, a drive through the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and a rally through six European countries in six days. In America, the Pebble Beach centenary drive programme offers an opportunity to visit some of California’s most scenic regions before spending the weekend at the legendary Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

2013 WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP Alongside Formula One, the World Rally Championship is regarded as one of the most prestigious and popular racing series run by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) in the world. Unlike in circuit racing, the teams in the World Rally Championship must come to terms with a diverse range of surfaces: an ever-changing combination of asphalt, snow, ice, mud and gravel. Both the driver and co-driver, and the material at their disposal, are put to the ultimate test – whether in the icy cold of Sweden or the scorching heat of Mexico and Greece. Manufacturers have been contesting World Rally Championships every year since 1973, while the Drivers’ Championship first came into existence in 1979. Over the years, the formats of the various rallies have evolved into what is now a predominantly standard format. A WRC event now consists of between 15 and 25 special stages, which are held over three to five days.

The main highlight of the 2013 World Rally Championship season will certainly be the Volkswagen Polo R WRC. As a matter of fact, after three “Dakar” victories in a row (2009, 1010 and 2011), Volkswagen has turned to the FIA World Rally Championship for a new challenge at the top of professional motorsport. A select driving line-up: Sébastien Ogier – together with co-driver Julien Ingrassia (both France) – and Jari-Matti Latvala and his co-driver Miikka Anttila (both Finland) will line up with the Polo R WRC for Volkswagen in the 2013 World Rally Championship. Ogier/ Ingrassia and Latvala/Anttila start the season on equal footing. Both have seven World Rally Championship victories to their name. Sebastien Ogier is ready to take on the challenge and says the car could compete for the championship already in 2013. If not, he is confident the odds will shift in his favour in 2014. The personal rivalry between Ogier and nine time World Champion Sebastian Loeb will take place just in four (maybe five) occasions this year. The 2012 WRC winner has announced his retirement in order to take on circuit racing, but will be at the start of the season opening rally in Monte-Carlo. If the Volkswagen driver is certainly excited to hunt Loeb’s legacy, the other WRC protagonists share the same will to fight for the title. Mikko Hirvonen and Dani Sordo will race the Citroen DS3 WRC that allowed Loeb to conquer his ninth championship, while the Ford RS WRC will hit the streets of Monaco driven by Norway’s Mads Ostberg and by Russian Evgeny Novikov. Belgian Thierry Neuville will also race for Ford after last year’s championship behind the wheel of a Citroen DS3 WRC (Citroen Junior World Rally Team). MINI did terminate the official involvement in the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2012 season. It is however expected to see the MINI John Cooper Works WRC in private hands during the 2013 championship.

The legend: Sebastian Loeb Loeb developed a keen interest in rallying in his late teens. In 1998 he took two wins in the French Citroen Saxo Trophy series before securing the title the following year. He won the Super 1600 Drivers’ Cup in 2001, and claimed his first overall victory on Rallye Deutschland the following season in a Citroen Xsara WRC. He quickly became established as an all-round performer with wins on asphalt, gravel and snow. Having chased Petter Solberg for the 2003 WRC crown - losing out on the final round - he went one better in 2004 to become world champion for the first time. His dominant performance in 2005, when he won 10 events, set a new record for the most wins in a season and marked Loeb out as one of rallying’s all-time greats. With Citroen taking a sabbatical in 2006 to develop its allnew C4 WRC, Loeb transferred to the privateer Kronos Racing operation, albeit with Citroen’s full backing, and claimed title number three. In the process he beat Carlos Sainz’s record of 26 wins to become the sport’s most successful driver. Reunited with Citroen Sport for 2007 and armed with the make’s C4, Loeb became champion again. A fifth title followed in 2008 when Loeb broke his own record for wins in one season with 11 victories. These included first-place finishes in Finland and Great Britain, the two of the classic events Loeb hadn’t previously cracked. After claiming five wins from the opening five rounds in 2009, it looked as though Loeb would dominate the title race once again, only to suffer a run of uncharacteristically bad luck. He started the penultimate round trailing rival Mikko Hirvonen in the title race after the Finn had secured four straight wins. Victory for Loeb in Spain set up a winner-takes-all finale in Wales. Loeb held firm to win the rally and the title by a solitary point, the narrowest winning margin since he defeated Marcus Gronholm in 2006. Loeb’s 2010 campaign netted eight wins out of a possible 13. Title number eight in 2011 came on the back of a tough season following a controversial intra-team battle with Sebastien Ogier, which resulted in the latter leaving Citroen at the end of the year. In 2012, there was far less drama in Loeb’s apparently effortless progress towards his ninth title. He then announced his retirement from rally racing but will take part at least in four WRC events, while he begins his circuit racing career.
GULF 12 HOURS
The 12 Hours fight! Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi (UAE) is one of the most spectacular racing venues in the world. Some say it is without any doubt the best in the world. Apart from the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi race, the Gulf 12 Hours is the only international event hosted at Yas Marina. A large number of GT cars and CN Prototypes take the track in this unusual endurance race. As a matter of fact the format of the Gulf 12 Hours is unique: 6+6 hours races. The 12 hours endurance race is split into two rounds by a break lasting one hour and a half. The second edition of the Gulf 12 Hours was a great success with 8 different car brands, raced by some of the most important GT teams in the world, taking the field in Abu Dhabi. Fans ejoyed seeing Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ginetta and Wolf cars chasing the podium spots. The race was exciting taking the battle for the win to the final hour of the competition. Gaetano Ardagna, Gianmaria Bruni and Tony Vilander eventually sealed the victory in the final twenty minutes, taking their Ferrari 458 of the AF Corse team to overall victory. Many teams have already confirmed their participation to the 2013 edition, confirming the fact that the Gulf 12 Hours has become one of the most important endurance races of the motorsport season.

Subaru begins production of XV SUV in Malaysia
GM to Buy Back Stock from U.S. treasury Department
Subaru announced that it has started production of the Subaru XV crossover SUV at a Malaysian assembly plant of Tan Chong Motor Assemblies Sdn. Bhd (TCMA), an automotive assembly company of Tan Chong Group. The official ceremony to mark the production start was held at the TCMA plant on December 19. The CKD assembly of Subaru’s popular crossover is conducted under contract by TCMA with the initial production plan of 5,300 units a year. Locally-assembled Subaru XV models go on sale in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia through Tan Chong Group’s well-established distribution channels. Since its foundation in 1974, TCMA has established its expertise in production and quality management in its long time engagement in automotive assembly of Japanese and European brand automobiles including Subaru vehicles back in 1986.
General Motors said it will purchase 200 million shares of GM common stock held by the U.S. Department of the Treasury for $5.5 billion, or $27.50 per share. The share buyback is part of the Treasury’s plan to fully exit its entire holdings of GM stock within 12 to 15 months, subject to market conditions. Treasury has announced its intention to sell its remaining shares of common stock into the market through various means and in an orderly fashion. “This announcement is an important step in bringing closure to the successful auto industry rescue, it further
removes the perception of government ownership of GM among customers, and it demonstrates confidence in GM’s progress and our future,” said Dan Akerson, chairman and CEO of GM. The repurchase price of $27.50 per share represents a 7.9 percent premium over the closing price on December 18, 2012. After the repurchase, Treasury will continue to own approximately 300 million shares of GM common stock, or approximately 19 percent of the outstanding shares on a fully diluted basis. Government ownership of GM stock was the result of the auto industry rescue that began under U.S. President George W. Bush in 2008 and which was expanded by President Barack Obama in 2009. The industry in general, and GM in particular, have rebounded sharply since the rescue. Since the rescue, GM has announced investments of more than $7.3 billion in the U.S. and created or retained more than 20,000 jobs.
Africa / Europe Algeria / France Renault launches industrial development project in Algeria Renault, SNVI (Société Nationale de Véhicules Industriels, Algeria’s National Company of Industrial
Vehicles) and the country’s National Investment Fund (FNI) signed a shareholders’ agreement in Algiers for the creation of a joint venture (owned 51% by the Algerian partners and 49% by Renault) to develop the automotive industry in Algeria and support local market growth. SNVI and FNI are contributing 34 and 17 percent respectively, to form the 51 percent stake. The agreement provides for the construction of a manufacturing plant in Oued Tlelat, southwest of Oran, to build Renault Group passenger cars and LCVs, mainly for the Algerian market. Oued Tlelat was chosen because of the benefits it brings to the project, including its road network, qualified workforce, proximity to the port of Oran, infrastructure and quality land. The plant’s annual production volume will start at 25,000 vehicles/year (7 vehicles/hour) and will ultimately be increased to 75,000 vehicles/year (15 vehicles/hour), based on market response. The first model to be manufactured there will be New Symbol. Local content in cars will also be gradually stepped up to develop the automotive industry in Algeria. “It is a pleasure and an honour to be playing a part in the signing of this agreement which aims to develop Algeria’s automobile industry,” said Renault’s JeanChristophe Kugler, Chief Operating Officer, EuromedAfrica region. “Renault is proud to be the first carmaker to establish production facilities in Algeria. It is also proud to be contributing to the automobile industry’s development in the country.”
Europe Germany Opel plans to end car production in Bochum in 2016 Opel AG management informed its employees that vehicle production is planned to end in Bochum (Germany) at the end of the current Zafira lifecycle, expected in 2016. In June, Opel announced that no successor to the current Zafira is planned to be allocated in Bochum in view of the shrinking European
car market and the overcapacities in the automotive industry. Despite intensive efforts this situation could not be changed. The warehouse in Bochum will continue to offer jobs beyond 2016 and could be expanded. Additionally, Opel is negotiating with the employee representatives to allocate a new component production in Bochum. On top of this, the working group “Bochum Perspective 2022”, which was recently established by Opel, has the objective to focus on site development, to secure existing jobs and create new ones in the City of Bochum and the entire Ruhr region. “Bochum Perspective 2022” is composed of representatives of local and regional government, along with leaders and innovators from labor, industry, academia and financial institutions located in North Rhine-Westphalia. Opel will support the initiative financially and personnelwise.
