How to revive a district by renewing a wasted building? How can a building dedicate to a city?

The Fantasy Company invites us to reconstruct an old building as a new exhibition and selling area. What is more important that the Fantasy Company is going to do is that to regenerate the old central district of Taichung.

Therefore, the issue how to revive a dead area by lighting up a new spot as a node would be considered firstly.

Old facade, dead site, and newborn architecture

As an old district of Taichung where is on the centre, the site is very potential to revive the community around it, which could connect other newborn districts at the same time. Just like other works of the Fantacy Story company, the aim of this project is to lighten the original old building, making people get together on this dead and silent site again. Instead of overhauling all the old building, the new design remains the old facade as a design method. Remenber the permanent memories, and explore the new space.

People from the outside can actually see what's happening inside, including some exhibition works of artists. So, it can be said that there is a strong connection with the public, not only with the users inside the building. Moreover, the old facade has been remained at the same time, which also has a strong connection with the interactive facade.

How would the architecture have become after a disaster happened in the future? After the rising of sea level, it is necessary to rebuild a new city. However, it seems more important to think about the representation of an urban. The content of a society, humanality, and history should be thought into the new design, which brings the relationships between people back.

ISSUE

ARCHITECTURE AFTER THE DISASTER

The Rise of Sea level

D ue t o t h e p ro g re s s ive gl ob a l warming, the rise of sea level is clearly predictable. Architects need to rethink the living spaces in the future. Moreover, the polluted water is diff icult for people to use. Meanwhile, it seems more i mp o r t a n t t o t h i n k a b o u t t h e representation of human history and social relationships rather than redesigning a whole new urban.

This program provides not only sufficient living spaces floating on the water but also complete communities equiping perfect living funtions, which represent the human society.

Predictable and pre-constructible

According to the Science megazine, the speed of sea level rising is faster than predicted. The sea level has climbed approximately 0.2m during the last 100 years. Since the temperature keeps climbing, the sea level seems to jump over 1.4m before 2100s. What is also noteworthy is that the rise of sea level is a disaster which happens slowly but keeps going, which means architects need to develop a long-run urban planning instead of a temperorary housing. Since the rise of sea level is predictable, we can construct them before the situation gets worse.

CONCEPT

DIAGRAMS OF THE DESIGN

Coral reefs are seen as a emblem

It is interesting to note that coral reefs reveals some amazing combination ways. Furthermore, coral reefs are also an important sign of water pollution. As a result, they can be seen as a symbol of ocean to represent the insular (island) characteristics.

Based on the concept of coral reefs, analysing their features helps construct a "living pod" to intake needed people. In this case, people seems like a clownf ish in a sea anemones. The sea anemone for clownfish means the living pod for people in this project.

FCU BOOK HUT SOPHOMORE

48

Architecture is not the investment for the businesspeople, but the art for its users and the society. This "book hut" is the No. 6 book house developed by Feng Chia University, which is in order to narrow the gap between a city and a countryside. Both light weight fabrication and modularization make the book house easier to build and allow the public to take part in the project.

T h i s b o ok hu t i s bu i l t fo r t h e students in the Wu-Tso Elementary School. That is, the site was chosen to be located on the empty lawn in the school. What is more interesting is that the school is l o c a t e d b e s i d e s t h e Ta i ch u n g Airport, which means the problem of the noise needs to be considered. Moreover, The size of this site is narrow, which means the scale of the project would be tinny.

52

The critical conditions

Since the site is in the front of a classroom, the brightness, which would be less because of the book house, should be considered as an innate and important condition to this project. The problem that how to keep both the classroom and the book house bright and how to keep enough privacy, which allows students focus on what they are doing, at the same time would be the major course. There are three trees in the site which need to be conserve as a sigh of the memory and the history.

Concept of mountains

S i n c e t h e Wu -Ts o E l e m e n t a r y School located on the foot of Da Du Mountain, it has been clear that the concept of mountains can be developed as the sign of the school.

What is more interesting is that Da Du Mountain is actually not a "mountain" but, in fact, a bench terrace. I transform the geographic character of the terrace into geometrical language, forming the siginificant difference of level heights of slabs in the project, creating a jumpimg and flowing space to f it active nature of children.

There are various scale of spaces t h a t p e o p l e n e e d i n d i f fe re n t ages because of changing scales of human. The users of this book house includ the students, teachers, and even the residents around the site. Planning sufficient space that users need by analysing their scales, and modularizing the space and functions. Not only the scales, the dynamic space and active functions are also one of special demand of users in this case (lively young children).

Modularization

Lofting grids onto the site to modularize the functions, space, and even the heights of slabs. The modularization makes it easy to calculate the amount of needed sp ace for d if f i re nt u s e rs, and the amount of needed space for activities like reading and playing.

Every grid presents a 1mĂ—1m unit, and the site was seen as 9mĂ—9m overall. The diagram provided gives the information that "reading" occupies 26 grids, "playing" needs 24 grids, and 16 grids are planned as the entrance space.
