Westward Ho!, Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde are famous for their sands and the invigorating waves are popular with surfers. The rugged coastline from Westward Ho! to Hartland is perfect for rock pooling with the little ones, with further chances to go crabbing from Mortehoe to Minehead. Welcombe, Ilfracombe Tunnels and Barricane beaches are smaller more secluded places while Northam Burrows is teeming with birdlife and has acres of space for everyone.

Bucks Mills, Peppercombe and Hartland Quay reward walkers with outstanding rock formations, pebbles to skim into the sea or take a net for prawning and see what you can catch. Westward Ho!, Woolacombe and the Tunnels Beaches at Ilfracombe enjoy Blue Flag status whilst others like Combe Martin and Croyde have Quality Coast Awards. During the Summer season RNLI lifeguards patrol many of our beaches so come on in – the water’s beautiful.

Dune systems, ancient fields and mud flats make this special place an environment that we treasure for its beauty, rarity and diversity. The quiet valleys and wild moors of Exmoor are home to half of the Red Deer in England which you can often glimpse alongside our rare and hardy Exmoor ponies. A look to the skies will reward you with precious views of a wide range of birds from oyster catchers on the coast to peregrines over

the heather and a variety of waders in rivers and reservoirs. On Lundy, Britain’s only statutory marine reserve, you can watch for seals, or seek out Devon’s only breeding colony of puffins. The spectacular scenery may also hide wild goats, Sika deer or even a Pygmy shrew. It all makes North Devon one of the finest unspoilt locations in the UK and officially world class by nature.

Many of our local restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients. Devon is the dairy centre of England and in our tea rooms you’ll find the finest cream teas and plenty of treats as well. Beachside restaurants, town centre bistros or cosy country retreats will give a taste of fine dining you’ll never forget. Or enjoy a tasty pub supper, a pie and a pint after a walk on the moor, or a plate of chips with fish that’s straight from the sea. For seaside picnics or packed lunches on the Moors,

why not visit one of the region’s independent farm shops. You’ll find organic, locally grown, seasonal ingredients that are freshly picked and packed with flavour. Our bustling Farmers’ and Country Markets are a delight of fresh produce including meat, cheeses, bakery goods and preserves to fill your shopping basket and can be discovered at Barnstaple, South Molton, Bideford, Hartland, Ilfracombe and Torrington.

Visit the port of Bideford with its Long Bridge dating from the 13th Century and from which Grenville and Raleigh sailed on their voyages of discovery. Enjoy the history of Barnstaple, the oldest borough town in Britain or travel back to the English Civil War at the Torrington 1646 Centre. Our Pannier Markets are packed with charm and character and full of unique things to buy. Elegant houses, stately homes and grand residences

reveal long and distinguished family histories. Natural heritage such as Tarr Steps on Exmoor reveal how our ancestors travelled in 1000BC. Walk down the steep cobbled streets of Clovelly and feel the hustle and bustle of days gone by – it’s one of the most evocative villages on our coast. Visit during one of the village’s food events and you’ll see the ancient quayside alive with the fabulous flavours of local culture and cuisine.

Start your day with a run along a deserted beach or stroll along the South West Coast path – one of England’s greatest walks. Grab a quick round of golf on one of our popular courses – we boast the oldest links course in the country. Learn to ride a quad bike or a horse and go trekking along bridleways or over the moor. Alternatively, enjoy traffic free cycling on the Tarka Trail. If you’re feeling more athletic sign up for a high ropes course or try your hand at abseiling or

mountain boarding. For sailing and waterskiing the Torridge estuary is renowned. Surfers and kite surfers come from all over the UK to ride the rollers at our beaches. Visit a surf school - they can show you how to get on board. You can pick up a paddle and drift downstream in a Canadian canoe or bring a rod and rest a while by the water’s edge. Put your feet up, relax and plan your next challenge.

For the biggest names in the high street, make Barnstaple your first stop. Green Lanes has a great range of bigger brands whilst the traditional Pannier Market offers a great range of gifts and produce. Find foodie treats by visiting Butcher’s Row or explore the town’s cosy cafes and coffee shops. Bideford with it’s broad quay boasts quirky and independent specialists. Find fascinating curios, antiques, art shops, gifts and great cakes at every turn.

For surf and street fashion Braunton is a must. With surf shops galore it’s the place to go for essential kit or just to look cool. For chocolate lovers Ilfracombe is a must with it’s delicious award winning hand made chocolates at our very own chocolate emporium. And with Lynton and Lynmouth it’s great for gifts and souvenirs with plenty of cafes and tea rooms to serve you up a West Country treat.

SERVICED ACCOMMODATION

Hotels, Guest Houses, B&Bs, Farmhouses & Inns

The accommodation pages contain details of holiday accommodation on offer in North Devon and Exmoor. These pages have been divided into eight different areas of the region and colour coded to help you find your way around. These areas are not precise divisions but merely give a general indication of location. Many of the adverts include a colour box, indicating basic details such as prices, months open and facilities on offer. The symbols shown on the right have been used to represent facilities on offer.

Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year and that North Devon+ have made every effort to check that gradings are correct but cannot be held responsible for any discrepancies. Sometimes an establishment has very high quality standards but cannot achieve a higher rating because certain facilities are not on offer, i.e. 2 Star Hotel that does not offer room services cannot achieve 3 Star Hotel status. However hotels and guest accommodation that ‘go the extra mile’ to make your stay a special one may achieve a Gold or Silver award. Silver Awards recognise exceptional quality at all levels and Gold Awards are given to the very ‘best of the best’. To confirm an Enjoy England rating please visit www.enjoyengland.com or telephone VisitEngland on 0207 578 1454. For AA ratings, visit www.theAA.com or telephone 01256 844455.

HOW TO BOOK Visit www.northdevon.com and do a property search for your chosen accommodation. Check out their availability and if available book on line. Alternatively click through to their web site, email or give them a call. Advance booking is always recommended, particularly in high season. We recommend that all prices and descriptions are confirmed prior to booking. It is helpful to advertisers to mention the Guide when you make enquiries. Once you have made a booking and the reservation has been confirmed by either party, a contract exists and cancellation charges may apply. It is recommended that you take out holiday insurance to cover against the possibility of cancellation due to circumstances beyond your control. COMPLAINTS Occasionally a visitor may have cause for complaint against an establishment. It is always advisable to take up the matter with the owner or manager in the first instance. If you wish to take the matter further and the property is registered with an official grading scheme, any complaints should be referred to the relevant body. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information in this guide, North Devon+ cannot accept liability for any property advertised herein.

GRADING FOR SELF CATERING

You will see some of the accommodation featured in this guide has been quality assessed by either VisitEngland** or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment.

Self Catering Establishments i.e. Bungalows, Apartments, Houses and Cottages.

GRADING FOR HOLIDAY, CARAVAN AND CAMPING PARKS VisitBritain operates a star rating in respect of holiday, caravan and camping parks. The star rating reflects the overall quality of the park and the highest rating of 5 stars is reserved for parks of exceptional quality, which provide specific facilities and service.

A quality rating provides an independent assessment of what you can expect to find. Whatever the size of accommodation or the facilities offered, a rating gives an invaluable guarantee that your stay will meet your expectations.

The AA operates a pennant scheme, whereby holiday parks are classified on a 1 to 5 pennant scale, according to the style and range of facilities on offer. As the pennant rating increases the park will offer a higher quality and variety of facilities.

GETTING HERE

North Devon and Exmoor have always benefited from being secluded compared to the rest of the West Country. That’s what makes the area so special. But today our links are better than they have ever been so now you can pick and choose how you get here. You can bring the car along the major roads or travel the scenic route. Or how about leaving the car at home and coming by air, rail, bus or bike? BY AIR North Devon has yet to have an international airport (thank goodness) but the region is well served by regional hubs. Exeter is only an hour away by bus, rail or car and Bristol is just a two hour drive. Other airports within reach are Plymouth, Swansea, Cardiff and Newquay. If you are travelling by air there are a number of local taxis and transport specialists who provide airport shuttle services to and from North Devon. www.airsouthwest.com www.exeter-airport.co.uk www.bristolairport.co.uk

BY FOOT Taking the South West Coast Path is probably the most peaceful way to get here. It’s easy enough to find! Local buses can take you there or pick you up along the way or you can walk off the train at Barnstaple straight on to the coast path. Alternatively try the Two Moors Way, the Exe Valley Way or the West Country Way www.southwestcoastpath.com www.westcountryway.co.uk www.devon.gov.uk/walking

BY BIKE Cycle trails are expanding all the time but the most popular is the Tarka Trail. 31 miles of traffic free cycling await the intrepid explorer. It’s a great and green way to see our lovely countryside – with cafes, pubs and stops along the way. Once you’re here there are plenty more fantastic cycle routes to explore including the Devon Cycle Network and the Ruby Way. www.devon.gov.uk/tarkatrail

North Devon & Exmoor Guide 2011

BY RAIL North Devon is well served by rail, with an hourly direct link to Exeter St David’s and the rest of the UK rail network, on the wonderfully picturesque Tarka Line. Once at Barnstaple you can link up with local buses or the Tarka Trail. www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk • www.tarkaline.co.uk

BY BUS North Devon and Exmoor are peppered with bus routes that will take you through gorgeous countryside, over the moors and into distant villages. You could book a seat with a specialist coach holiday provider or jump on a National Express coach. They run services to most towns whilst First Bus and Stagecoach run frequent local services. www.firstgroup.com • www.stagecoachbus.com

BY CAR There are many and varied routes to North Devon and Exmoor. You can choose the major routes to get here quickly and easily or you can take your time and enjoy the view. Many visitors choose the North Devon Link Road, the A361, which joins the M5 at Tiverton (junction 27). If you’re coming from the North, Midlands or South East it is the easiest and fastest route. Otherwise the Atlantic Highway (A39) is the quick way to approach from Cornwall. It’s a lovely way to arrive here. Alternatively you can choose the A377 from Exeter and Crediton, the A386 and A388 from Plymouth and South Devon or the A30 if you’re staying in Ruby Country. If you’re heading for Ilfracombe, Lynton or Exmoor then the A39 and A396 from Minehead or Tiverton make lovely scenic drives too.
