A
lthough the journey along the Atlantic Highway to Bideford is fairly short, we did not escape the questions of are we there yet? How many more miles? And is it time for lunch. A stop at the retail outlet shopping centre, Atlantic Village put an end to all three questions as we settled down to lunch and to plan our itinerary for the week. It’s amazing what you can come away with when you are not even shopping, especially when you find a bargain, so a few t-shirts each, some shoes for the girls, and a new backpack later we headed towards Westward Ho! for an afternoon on the beach. While the girls explored the rock pools and splashed in the sea, Lin and I relaxed on the beach. Westward Ho! is a family friendly beach and a popular venue for surfing lessons, although we weren’t feeling brave enough for the challenge that day! With the weather indecisive, we headed to Dartington Crystal, to see the world famous glassware made by hand. The glass, with which the blowers work, is heated up to 1,400 °C and allowed to cool to 1,100 °C to be worked into some very distinctive designs.

Having watched these experts at work, with the children fascinated by the activity going on around them, we moved onto the visitor centre where Harriet and Evie delighted in some rather messy glass painting. There are lots of creative activities that you and your family can try out at Dartington but they do recommend calling to book during busy periods on 01805 626 242.

Day two, and it was off to Abbotsham and the Big Sheep. Sheep shearing demonstrations and breed talks were interspersed with goes on the bouncy pillows, pony rides and the twister roundabout. We were then entertained by Roxy the sheepdog working with the Indian runner ducks, which are used to help train new sheepdogs. After an excellent cup of coffee and alfresco lunch, the girls returned to the twister, while Lin and I relaxed in the shade. Although they had still not tired of the roundabout, we headed off to the mini tractor area, where they tried their hands at making their way around a circuit. This was followed by a trip to the livestock shed, to see sheep, rabbits, puppies, piglets, ferrets and goats. The final feature of the day was the sheep racing. Although we failed to back the winner, it was fun to see the sheep racing down the course.

With day three came the sunshine so we headed for the third attraction on our list - The Dinosaur and Wildlife Park near Combe Martin. Thirty acres of stunning gardens promised amazing animals, life sized dinosaurs and more. The park did not disappoint. Our arrival coincided with one of the hourly dinosaur shows, and the girls were amazed to find themselves face to face with a life size animatronic t-rex. We spent the morning exploring the gardens and meeting the animals before watching the sea lion show. The park has a whole range of animal encounter experiences which can be booked on arrival or in advance by calling 01271 882 486. Afternoon day three and we arrive in Woolacombe, where we planned to spend a few hours on the beach. With a Blue Flag status and a wealth of restaurants, colourful shops, arcades and cafés, the place has a real holiday vibe about it. Perfect for rock pooling, and with safe shallow swimming, the beach is popular with families. Lin and I were soon to be found stretched out on the golden sand while the girls explored and paddled in the sea. We then headed over the Woolacombe Bay Holiday Park where we had booked Harriet a session on the Woolacombe Wave. This state-of-the-art surfing simulator generates a thin sheet of water just a few inches deep that flows over a stationary wave so you can surf in complete safety. Kitted out in a board and wetsuit and given tips by the instructor, Harriet spent a happy hour soaking us all. An hour on the Woolacombe Wave costs £20, call 0843 2080 377 as booking is recommended especially at peak season.

Day four, and we were starting to appreciate that the kids were in charge and it was off to The Milky Way. First stop was the Clone Zone, an alien theme exploration involving a degree of physical exertion from those entering the tunnels of the ride. Next on the list was the Cosmic Typhoon, the main rollercoaster at the park. In my youth, I had no qualms about such things. Now, in my more mature years, my enthusiasm has dimmed somewhat and it was with some trepidation that Harriet and I joined the queue. However the ride was fine. Only one drop causing me to shut my eyes. Lin meanwhile took Evie on the Big Apple coaster more suited for the younger ones. With lunchtime approaching, we headed to the outdoor play area for zip wires and climbing frames followed by a quick round of mini golf, before lunch in the café. The call of the indoor play area was next on the cards, with its slides, climbing frames, ball pools and dodgems. The kids were having so much fun that we had to herd them outdoors again in time for the falconry display. This was my favourite part of the day, as we were shown the flying skills or otherwise, of some fabulous birds of prey.
North Devon has a wide range of attractions on offer and we sampled just a few of them. Even with a fortnight’s stay, we could easily have kept our children entertained on a daily basis with no problem at all…

Rock Pooling: Discover anemonies, crabs, shrimps and fish in rock pools teaming with life. Check for low tide, then head for the beach with your prawning net. Exmoor, an area rich with varied and inspiring landscapes. Visit Exmoor National Park and you’ll discover one of Britain’s hidden treasures. Dulverton is the setting of part of R. D. Blackmore’s classic novel ‘Lorna Doone’. The castle at Dunster stands guard over the town’s medieval buildings and the busy village and port of Porlock provide stunning views and the opportunity to rest before climbing the breathtaking coastal route. At the very heart of Exmoor is Exford, the perfect base for exploring the historic and remarkable Tarr Steps. On the coast the picturesque twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth or ‘Little Switzerland’ will charm you. It might be a steep walk from the beautiful harbour of Lynmouth to the charming cafe’s and shops of Lynton, but the ingenious water powered cliff railway can take you up the 500 foot cliff effortlessly.

Ruby and Tarka Country: Rolling hills, lush valleys and miles of patchwork farmland. Step into the heart of North Devon where you’ll find Tarka Country little changed since Henry Williamson wrote his famous novel Tarka the Otter. Barnstaple, North Devon’s oldest and largest town sits at the centre of the Tarka Trail, a 180 mile route with 31 miles of off road cycleway. Heading south the market town of Great Torrington has a huge amount of history, having played an important role in the Civil War. Holsworthy in the heart of Ruby Country boasts one of the busiest and largest livestock markets with a frequent farmer’s market. The pretty town square comes alive every Wednesday as visitors enjoy mingling with local people and farmers. Hatherleigh is a historic market town of thatch and cob cottages dating back to the 16th century, the perfect place to experience rural Devon life. Visit on market day and you’ll feel you’ve arrived in the real Devon.
Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore: A magnet for cyclists, ramblers and a gateway for activity. Make Bideford your base and you’ll have the very best in pubs, music and restaurants to satisfy every palate. Visit the Pannier Market or wander through the traffic free lanes, you’ll find Bideford is the perfect place for a spot of retail therapy, with dozens of independent retailers, craft and antique shops. Stroll along the quay and admire the expansive waterfront, or visit the fortnightly farmers market. Grab the outdoors life with a trip to family friendly Westward Ho! The beach is fronted by a two mile long stretch of sand, and backed by traditional bucket and spade shops, tea rooms and restaurants. At the mouth of the River Torridge sits pretty Appledore. This quaint village offers a number of galleries and local crafts and hosts regular art festivals.
Combe Martin: Valleys, waterfalls, pathways and secret coves. Situated within
the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Combe Martin and its neighbour Berrynarbor, are simply beautiful. With the longest street of any village in the UK, Combe Martin sits at the very edge of Exmoor, surrounded by amazing coastal views, medieval field patterns, and steeped in a history of silver and tin mining. Overlooking the sheltered Watermouth Cove you’ll discover Berrynarbor. With its quaint houses and floral displays you’ll see first hand why Beatrix Potter found the area the perfect place for inspiration.

Dog friendly year round, and perfect for families and watersports enthusiasts, Saunton Sands is one of the biggest gems in the North Devon crown. The beach consists of three miles of Atlantic facing golden sands backed by some of the highest sand dunes in the country. Saunton is a well known North Devon surfing beach, but with usually more manageable waves for the inexperienced and novice surfers amongst you. Arrive by North Devon Surf and Cycle Bus, or leave your vehicle in the safe car park and start your adventure with a trip to the Beach Shop, selling everything you need for a day of sea, sun and surf. If you’re feeling peckish you can grab a takeaway from the Saunton Break Cafe, or wander over to the Sands Cafe and enjoy an alfresco lunch on the balcony. If you’re feeling adventurous why not try your hand at a spot of surfing. Several of North Devon’s leading surf schools operate on Saunton Sands, and an hour’s surf lessons includes all the kit. Saunton sands has starred in many films, television and video productions, and is a firm favourite with Robbie Williams, who filmed the video for his hit song Angels here.

Just for a moment forget North Devon’s beguiling hidden coves, secret footpaths and undiscovered pubs. There are several major sights in North Devon that I think everyone should see. The fishing village of Clovelly is like a slice of transplanted Mediterranean on a steep North Devon cliff. Its flower-decked whitewashed cottages tumble down a steep cobbled footpath to a tiny harbour. Clovelly may be full of tourists at prime times but ironically it’s a glimpse of what Devon life was like before the tourists arrived. The village has been preserved, not by the National Trust, but because it has been owned by the family who have lived in the local manor house for 250 years. Try to visit earlier or later than the crowds and you’ll experience one of the most memorable places not just in the south west but the whole of Europe. Best of all, stay in Clovelly overnight and see what’s it’s like when all the visitors have left. Further east, the twin towns of Lynmouth (at the sea level) and Lynton (high on the cliffs above) are full of delightful relics of charming Victoriana in a landscape so spectacular it is often called ‘Little Switzerland’. Poets, artists and writers much more talented than me have been inspired by the plunging wooded valleys leading up onto Exmoor, the towering sea cliffs and the extraordinary outcrops of the Valley of the Rocks. The ingenious water-powered cliff railway, world-class walks and interesting little shops in cobbled alleyways make it one of the most enjoyable sights of the South West. the guide | 2012

My third major attraction would be the surfers’ beaches of Saunton, Woolacombe and Croyde. These vast flat swathes of sand lie between huge dunes and huge waves roaring in from the Atlantic. Even if you don’t have a go yourself, it’s constantly engrossing to watch surfers tune their skills and it’s always lively fun to sample the cool surfers’ bars, cafes and restaurants too. Out of season these beaches don’t loose their appeal either – the surfers in their wet suits don’t seem to mind the weather and there’s nothing better to blow out the cobwebs than a bracing walk along a deserted sandy beach. Of course the best-known parts of any holiday region can get crowded. Luckily I discovered hundreds of lesser-known spots while exploring North Devon’s country lanes researching my book.

Towering sea cliffs and extraordinary outcrops, are perfect for exploring at the Valley of the Rocks…
Now my favourite beaches are the ones with hardly anyone there. You can have vast patches of seaside to yourself at other lovely spots like Woody Bay near Lynton, Rockham Beach near Mortehoe or Peppercombe near Bideford. My favourite is Lee Bay near Ilfracombe, You’ll need a map to find it but whether you walk along the coast path or drive through the winding lanes, it’s worth it. There’s a quirky village pub, rows of pretty cottages and a rocky beach that becomes more and more sandy as the tide goes out. I found other wonderful rural areas of North Devon, like the protected ‘Commons’ around the historic hilltop town of Great Torrington, the wide and relaxed estuaries of the Taw and Torridge Rivers, and the grand rolling hills around the National Trust’s Arlington Court Estate.

Far to the west of Arlington is one of my all-time favourite areas. The big crowds drive past Devon’s remote north west corner on the A39, heading for Cornwall. But they’re missing Hartland’s daunting cliffs, scary rocky shores and memorably bracing walks - especially at inappropriately named Welcombe Mouth. At pastel painted Hartland village I love to browse galleries of artists drawn to this wild spot. The village’s sturdy ‘Cathedral of North Devon’, St Nectan’s, has Devon’s tallest church tower - a navigational aid for ships battling the notorious headland. Nearby Hartland Abbey’s exotic Moorish interiors were inspired by Granada’s Alhambra. Its peacock-filled parkland fills a lush valley leading down to the sea.

The tall-hedged lanes to the west stop dead at Hartland Quay where the Atlantic thumps against gnarled jaws of black rocks. Stern cliffs march to the horizon on both sides. The stone quay here was smashed by storm waves 100 years ago. No-one has dared repair it since. Walk north to a lighthouse or south to cliff waterfalls. At the foot of the cliff, the isolated but friendly Hartland Quay Hotel has a cosy atmospheric bar, shipwreck museum, homely grub and rooms. It even sells homemade creamy ice-cream from a farm nearby. I’ve also become a big fan of the rural swathes of southern part of North Devon. Whenever my family stay in lovely old market towns like South Molton and Great Torrington we end up looking in estate agents windows thinking: “Wouldn’t it be great to live here.”

We always seem to stumble on great little villages all over North Devon. I love seeing their gardens spilling over stone walls and friendly folk sitting outside their cob cottages nodding to strangers. It’s easy to be lured by the rolling hills and traffic free lanes into unplanned strolls. My latest favourites include Georgeham, Bucks Mills and Berrynarbor (where world-famous modern artist Damien Hirst has his family home). On a recent visit we wandered around the village of Knowstone to the east of South Molton. These are the foothills of Exmoor where cottages are white-washed and thatched, and you have to slow your car for horses and cows in the country lanes. Just up the road from Knowstone you may spot world-famous adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes on his daily run through the heather-covered moors. ‘Ran’ lives on an Exmoor farm near here. At Knowstone itself there’s the evocatively named Crooked Oak River overhung by ancient trees and a thatched pub with open fires and gardens. The Masons Arms is just opposite the church, and is a traditional village pub that also serves Michelin-starred food.

North Devon is full of folklore, legends and odd historical facts, as historian Peter Christie explains…
L
ooking at our peaceful beaches one might find it hard to believe that pirates once flourished here. As far back as the seventeenth-century North African or ‘Barbary’ pirates sailed into the Bristol Channel and attacked ships and coastal settlements carrying off captives who might be ransomed or taken off to slavery. Indeed in 1622 Barnstaple raised £240 to ransom local seamen. By the following century North Devon had its own local pirates known as privateers. Given a licence by the Crown to attack enemy vessels they sometimes stretched the rules to engage allies as well as enemies. The years 1540 to 1620 have been called the ‘Golden Age of Plunder’ for Devonian sailors and when one considers that 80 years later in 1702 Bideford still had thirteen such privateering vessels and Barnstaple five, then one can see the truth of this. ¶ In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries smuggling took over from piracy with Welcombe Mouth near Hartland becoming a major destination for many local smugglers – with a hearse being used to move contraband goods on some occasions. Not all North Devon seamen were rogues, however, and some in 1585 were hugely important in world history. In that year Sir Richard Grenville commanded a fleet from Bideford sent to settle the first permanent European colony in North America thus allowing North Devon to claim with some truth to be the birthplace of the USA and Canada. The following year Grenville brought back a native American who was christened ‘Raleigh’ at Bideford in March 1588. Sadly he died a year later becoming the first American buried in England – and in the same year as he arrived five North Devon ships sailed to join Sir Francis Drake’s fleet that took on the Spanish Armada.

¶ Following these glory years North Devon sailors became more law-abiding and today large ocean-going bulk carriers can be seen loading at Bideford Quay whilst the Lundy supply vessel the Oldenburg regularly sails from Ilfracombe and Bideford to the island. ¶ Going back further in history, North Devon has claim to some famous events. In 878, for example, a large Viking raiding force landed it is thought at Appledore from Ireland. They marched inland to take on the Saxons who, rather unexpectedly, delivered a crushing defeat catching and slaughtering the invaders at a point in Northam parish still called Bloody Corner. ¶ A little later a notable man was buried on Lundy Island – ‘notable’ as when his skeleton was excavated in May 1856 his height was estimated to have been between 8’ 2” and 8’ 7”- with the burial site still being called ‘The Giant’s Graves’. Not all North Devonians have been so imposing but many were famous as wrestlers during earlier centuries. Silver spoons were usually offered as prizes whilst the actual fighting involved kicking your opponent’s shins whilst wearing hob-nailed boots. These matches were often associated with village revels which were regular occurrences in many local settlements. In 1829 they were characterised as ‘scenes of disgrace, riot and intoxication’ but now they have been replaced with fetes and carnivals though Barnstaple holds an annual ‘Green Man’ festival and Torrington has its nationally famous May Fair which both hark back to ancient beliefs.
¶ Visit Shebbear on November 5th and you won’t just see fireworks. Here every year the men of the village gather to ‘turn’ a large stone over as if they do not the Devil will surely appear and the village will be plagued with bad luck. Again on various ceremonial occasions you may be lucky enough to see one of the area’s eight Town Mayors resplendant in chains and robes – but many places used to elect ‘Mock Mayors’ who enjoyed drinking and spoofing the real ones. North Devonians are notable for pricking pomposity!

¶ Witchcraft has a long history in North Devon with, famously, three Bideford witches being among the last to be hanged in England (in 1682) though this didn’t act as much of a deterrent as in 1827 there were reckoned to be 25 witches in Combe Martin alone and in 1853 a famous Monkleigh witch died aged 105. In the mid 19th century a notorious white wizard called John Harper practised his ‘craft’ in Barnstaple and the surrounding area. Even today ‘cunning folk’ are to be found who can cure warts in humans and ringworm in cattle – and if it works who would complain? 50

¶ Occasionally these old beliefs still survive or have been brought back to life. At Combe Martin on every Spring Bank Holiday the ‘Hunting of the Earl of Rone’ takes place which sees ‘Grenadiers’ and other characters hunt the ‘Earl’ and then ‘shoot’ him. It is thought to be a folk memory of a real event and has been revived several times. One set of legends became a best-selling book when R.D.Blackmore used them in his ‘Lorna Doone’ published in 1869. Said to be based on a real criminal family living on Exmoor interested visitors can today try to find the places mentioned in the book.
¶ There are, needless to say, many more stories about the area many being covered in local books and pamphlets available in bookshops and at tourist information centres as well as being on the internet. Happy exploring…
Chambercombe Manor is a stunning 11th century haunted Manor House steeped in history and legends. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Chambercombe boasts many original features including a barrel ceiling and a plaster Tudor Frieze. We are open from Good Friday to 31st October. Our guided tours last around 50 minutes and are available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am and Sunday from 12 noon, our last tour is at 3pm. The Manor House is open Mondays and Fridays from 11am and on Bank holiday Saturdays from 12 noon to 4pm last entry at 3.30pm. Throughout July and August the Manor house is open for guided tours Monday to Friday from 10.30am to last tour at 4pm and Sundays from 12 noon last tour at 4pm. We have 3 acres of beautiful gardens for you to enjoy and our Tea rooms serve our famous cream teas, light lunches, snacks, tea, coffee, soft drinks, wine and beer. During July and August our Bistro is open every Friday from 7pm our last serving is at 9pm for evening meals. Candlelit tours of the Manor are available when booking a meal at the Bistro. Candlelit tours and evening meals must be booked in advance. Opening times may vary. We also have four lovely holiday cottages.

Lundy Island
¶ Whilst in North Devon you might keep an eye open for the ‘Exmoor Beast’. Sighted as far back as the 1920s this extremely large cat prowls the fields and woods of the area occasionally taking lambs. Hunted by Royal Marine sharpshooters in the 1980s none have ever been caught – and some witnesses claim to have seen cubs which suggests a breeding population. They have never attacked humans and indeed actively avoid us – and if you go down to the beach look for the ‘sea monster’ seen in 1911 off Westward Ho! and described as being ninety feet long with a back lined with black fins.

Bensons Hideout This cavern on Lundy came to be known as Benson’s Cave, the assumption being that he had used his convict slave labour to excavate it for the purpose of storing smuggled merchandise. The North Devon countryside can be a confusing place for suburban four legged visitors - but they soon learn to appreciate it…
A
lfie was puzzled by the sheep. Our young black Labrador had raced out to investigate the paddock behind the rented cottage and found several large, woolly white dogs on the far side of the fence. They smelt a bit funny and refused to bark or growl. The strange dogs just stared benignly as Alfie wuffed and sprang into play-with-me postures. So he wuffed some more, tried a playful growl and ran around in circles. They carried on staring. The North Devon countryside can be a confusing place for suburban four-legged visitors, but they soon learn to appreciate it, as Alfie did (although the little cameo with the sheep was repeated every day of our stay). With switchback coastal paths curving through heather and gorse, the vast expanses of Exmoor and Bodmin Moor to roam, open beaches (no ugly groynes to be skirted in this part of the world), rock pools to nose in and streams to splash through, it is canine heaven.

For an area offering such a lot of great outdoors, it can only be good news that the dog-owning consituency is neither small nor shrinking. There are something like eight million dogs in Britain, and according to the Kennel Club their owners are more likely than average to take their holidays in the UK. What’s more, in a recent survey, one owner in five said they would be more likely to book holidays at home if they knew they could take their dog – so it’s no wonder that northdevon.com regards visitors with dogs as “a strong and growing sector”. For our family, heading west on our first holiday in several years, and first ever as dog-owners, the omens were good even before we left the motorway. Did service stations on the M25 always provide adjacent grassy areas? I couldn’t remember but Alfie was grateful. Our final stop, at Sedgemoor Services on the M5, was swarming with canine travellers, from Pugs to Great Danes – almost too exciting for a three-year-old, inexhaustibly sociable Labrador.

Our destination was a farm near the village of Bradworthy, between Bideford and Bude, which proved to be an excellent base. Our cottage, from Helpful Holidays (helpfulholidays.com), was a converted former piggery with all mod cons for guests and their dogs, including an outside tap with hose for washing muddy paws, a well-fenced garden and a rough towel for drying – essential for water-loving Labs, which were once used to haul in nets from the freezing seas off Newfoundland, and have never lost the urge to plunge into water of any description (and mud).

While Amy, our teenage Goth daughter (this year’s beach look: thick eyeliner, black tights, black hoodie and back-combed hair) relaxed in the cottage, my wife Pip and I took Alfie out for the first of many memorably enjoyable walks, down lanes thick with meadowsweet, across fields and over stiles to the woods around the Gnome Reserve - surely the most unlikely, but enduring, tourist attraction ever to feature on a North Devon signpost.

With fine weather and limited time, we headed mostly for the beaches on subsequent days, though it was reassuring to note that if the weather took a severe turn for the worse (a bit of light rain doesn’t deter dog-walkers - after all, we’re a hardy bunch) there were other places to head for: Milky Way allows dogs in most of the park, for instance, and The Big Sheep offers a free kennel while the rest of you have fun. If your hound is happy to be on the lead for long periods, then Clovelly and Arlington Court are not out of bounds. (Note to dog-owners: if you’re staying in a cottage, owners often frown on your animal being left in it unattended, so daily plans must be made with this in mind). Of course, some of the best reasons for staying in North Devon are those that involve no admission charge. A more measured and forgiving pace of life (shop closed at lunchtime? Never mind, we can wait); the chance to breathe air salt-sweet that has just blown in across several thousand miles of ocean; peaceful evenings, and nights when the silence is broken only by the occasional coughing sheep or distant moo, and the only light is from moon and stars (can’t see your finger in front of your face? Then just relax and go to sleep).

For off-lead walks, you are spoilt for choice. We loved the coastal paths best, but there are countless more along footpaths, beside rivers and streams, round lakes and through woods. Among the best ones suggested for visitors are those at Baggy Point, over the Hangman Hills from Combe Martin, around the Torridge valley circuit from Great Torrington, and through the Lyn Gorge. With freedom comes responsibility, of course, which for dog-owners means always poop-scooping, and keeping the lead ready and a wary eye out for sheep and cows. David Kennard, who farms just outside Woolacombe (and stars in the Channel Five series Mist), blogs scathingly about one visiting family whose three dogs drove five different groups of sheep over the cliffs in a week – and who, when caught, said that “it doesn’t matter, it’s only sheep”. His reply is not recorded. Luckily we managed to avoid causing any major incidents with Alfie, who nonetheless made the most of every minute: nosing through gorse bushes, swimming in the sea, racing about on the beach.

While it’s true that dogs are banned on some beaches in summer, others welcome them - try Lynmouth, Watermouth Bay, Hele Bay, Mortehoe Beach (Rockham), Saunton Sands or Sandymouth (Alfie’s favourite). Others, including Woolacombe Bay and Widemouth Bay, are divided into restricted and dogs-welcome zones. On our all-too-brief travels we were pleased to find many bowls of water outside shops, and cafés where dogs were allowed. Those are pleasing steps in the right direction, not least because the alternative for owners may simply be to leave their dog in the car, which in summer heat really can be risking its life. “There is obviously a huge desire for people to holiday with their dogs,” says Heidi Ancell of the Kennel Club - and to judge from our experience, North Devon is well on the way to answering that desire.

ood has always been an enjoyable hobby for me, but it was not until I moved to North Devon that I discovered just how much better it can taste when it’s accompanied by an adventure. It doesn’t even have to be a muddy booted kind of adventure, just something a little different from the every day. For me, it was discovering huge mussels growing on the rocks on my favourite surfing beaches. For a former townie like me, moving here and discovering my favourite food growing locally was a revelation of the highest order. It was no time before I began to work out that there’s a lot of excellent stuff out there in the fields, swimming in the sea, on the beaches and in the hedgerows of where we live. And there are a lot of local fishermen, growers, farmers and producers out there doing their best to bring it to us and share it with us. Let me explain. I spent a day with my local fishmonger recently. He’s a colourful local character with plenty of chat and charm. If you go to a farmers’ market in North Devon you’ll see him there, with his barrow and his smile and an awful lot of knowledge about what’s fresh, what’s available and what’s good to eat. If you hang about to listen he’ll suggest a way to cook it that may surprise you. Needless to say, on the day I spent with him, he had me selling the catch, chatting with the customers and filleting mountains of fresh local fish. I can recommend it to anyone. Then again, he can’t take us all with him wherever he goes. But it’s worth ten minutes out of your day to have a chat. You don’t get that very often.

FOOD FOR A FEAST
The point in this is that there are people here in North Devon who can inspire you to do new things with the food they catch, grow and harvest. And the good news is that my fishmonger friend is not alone. Our local butcher is always up for a chat and you can pick up a few odd snippets of helpful information along the way. He’s the latest in a long line of well informed country people who really care about what they do and I salute him for his knowledge. Honey’s, in Parkham, might be out of the way but it’s worth the trip. For others, just ask the locals where they buy their stuff – search it out and you shall find it. Thankfully, these growers, farmers, butchers and fishmongers are the people who also provide fresh ingredients to many of North Devon’s best bars and restaurants. It would be an odyssey to visit them all but I’ve been to enough of them to know that it can pay dividends to ask for the locally grown, sustainably caught or the seasonal. In a few places you don’t even have to ask. Naomi and Brett Stevens, who own Memories in Northam, provide exceptional eating experiences. Brett fishes and cooks whilst Naomi takes care of front of house. It works. But you might have to book ahead. Elsewhere, pay a visit to La Gendarmerie in Ilfracombe or Noel Corston at The Courtyard in Woolacombe for North Devon’s finest dining.

Enjoy a Ploughman’s Lunch with local cheese and pickle!
At many of North Devon’s bars and restaurants you might not find the same kind of haute cuisine but you’ll certainly get to fill up on great food in a friendly atmosphere. Places like The Wayfarer in Instow are always a good bet in the summer. Walk straight off the beach and into a cool pint with some fresh local fish. Just make sure you shake the sand from your shoes before you go in. If you want a perfect sunset view you won’t even have to walk that far: The Boathouse, also at Instow, serves up pub grub just yards from the beach. Get a table by the window and you’ll get one of the best sunset views of the Taw and Torridge Estuary. I’m all in favour of the quirky and the interesting and those who seek it out will be rewarded when they visit The Old Smithy at Welcombe. Good food, nice people, unique atmosphere. For river views grab an outside seat at The River Bank in Bideford and enjoy a breath of fresh air, with equally enjoyable food. I’ll be crucified if I don’t mention one of the things that Devon is famous for – the humble cream tea. You’ll get one almost everywhere you go but few places can beat Watersmeet near Lynmouth for atmosphere, location and the genteel clinking of tea cups. At the National Trust Café you’ll be able to grab a pot of tea and a scone with some of that most amazing of treats – local strawberry jam with Devon clotted cream.

Of course it’s not all about eating out. Searching for the best ingredients will give you a reward all of its own. And what is a meal if it’s without an adventure of some description? You don’t even have to go searching for mussels, clams and samphire – although it’s fun if you do. Farmers’ markets happen regularly in village halls, on quaysides and on the streets of our towns and villages. It’s one of the best ways you can support the local economy at the same time as pick up some quality food. You might not be able to pick up a perfectly straight cucumber or a spud without mud but I suppose that’s the point. Crack an egg and see how golden that yolk is - I rest my case! North Devon’s pannier markets are an equally good place to pick up the provisions. They are remarkable and, thankfully, are enjoying somewhat of a revival as we discover the benefits of shopping and eating locally. This is where you’ll find specialist stalls selling olives and sun dried tomatoes side by side with traditional cheese makers, fishmongers and local growers. If you’re lucky you may even come across a local farmer selling a few of his surplus cabbages or cauliflowers, or perhaps some home-baked cakes. It’s the original farmers’ market and it’s a sure fire method of getting what’s truly fresh and in season. For those of us used to gleaming aisles of perfect vegetables it might seem an odd way to get the groceries but it’s the way it’s always been done here. You enjoy a chat, exchange a few coins, and both go home happy. I love that you can still do it here. There are pannier markets at Barnstaple, Bideford, South Molton and Torrington. In The Camper Van Cookbook, I wrote about a game invented for those of us who tour the countryside. It is called roadside roulette and it was inspired the roadside stalls of North Devon. In the summer time you’ll find all kinds of home-grown and home cooked stuff at the side of the road from the locals’ allotments, gardens and farms. You’ll be surprised what’s on offer. Of course they are nothing new but they are another way to get fresh fruit and vegetables straight out of the earth. They taste better too and will probably be cheaper than those you buy elsewhere. Anyway, the idea of the game is to stop at the first one that you find and cook with whatever you find. Choose carefully. In Hartland there is one that sells nothing but home made jam and hand knitted gloves. Try explaining that to the children at tea time!

The beautiful garden is connected to the mature planting of Lady Anne’s garden by a winding rock gorge, planted with ferns and bamboos. The stream running from the gorge and the bog garden leads to an enchanting lake. The original garden at Rosemoor, tucked into the north-east corner of the estate, is very much a plantsman’s garden, created by Lady Anne Berry over a period of thirty years. Hartland Abbey The house, on the site of a 12
century Augustinian Abbey, sits in a long valley running to the sea. Post-Dissolution, it was given by Henry VIII to a member of the Stucley family, who own it still. In the 18th century, shelterbelt woodland was created on each side of the house. The bog garden is ascribed to Gertrude Jekyll, a family friend and frequent visitor here and to nearby Clovelly Court. The fernery is probably Jekyll’s too, and Nigel Alford, gardener here for eleven years, describes how “until 1996, it was completely lost – the brambles had gone right up into the trees”. The long “Ladies Walk” leads from the house to the secret walled gardens hidden in the trees. Inside the irregular walls, the sloping ground and lack of symmetry give a romantic and quirky informality. Birdsong is usually the only sound, and scents are captured within the high walls. The shelter means many tender plants survive well. Take time to walk in the other direction to the gazebo and Blackpool Mill beach. Clovelly Court The tall and somewhat austere Clovelly Court is perched
overlooking the Bristol Channel, above the historic village of Clovelly that has links with Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies. Recent renovations of the walled kitchen gardens include reconstruction of Victorian lean-to glasshouses, re-pointing and coping of the 12ft walls and the planting of fruit trees against them. Melons, apricots, nectarines, figs, grapes, peaches, tender veg and pelargoniums all grow under glass. Organic vegetables, flowers and plants are sold from the village tourist centre. Castle Hill An 18
century landscape garden and park, with fashionable temples, follies and a distant triumphal arch, were created by Lord Fortescue around his grand Palladian house. The Grade I historic garden has seen many changes since, not least on account of the devastating storm in 1990 which made it possible for the current owners, the Earl and Countess of Arran, to plant many new tree and shrub collections, especially the Earl’s favourite – magnolias. “Fifty per cent of the trees were blown over. It gave us huge opportunities for new planting and to leave the new woodland more open.” th
Closer to the house, a millennium garden designed by Xa Tollemache features a water sculpture by Giles Rayner and, with its clipped quercus ilex standards and lavender and box-edging enclosing herbaceous plants, extends the garden’s interest into early autumn. Marwood Hill This had been top of any plantsperson’s Devon visiting list
since the Eighties, when Dr Jimmy Smart was transforming twenty acres of valley into a complex garden of lakes, woodland and unusual plants. He died in 2002 but the garden is continued in his spirit by his family. Highlights include a grove of birch and eucalyptus, a camellia collection under glass and a pergola smothered with twelve varieties of wisteria. Malcolm Pharoah, head gardener for 38 years, says the doctor, being a plantsman, built his house around his plants rather than the other way around. There are National Collections of Japanese iris, tulbaghia and astilbe. Docton Mill Much written about and photographed in its time, Docton Mill
Gardens are in yet another phase of their life. First developed in the Thirties, the gardens were extensively cleared and redesigned in the Eighties, when huge numbers of trees were planted and a bog garden created. Since 2000, a magnolia garden, herbaceous borders and the woodland have been developed. The mill leat with a holding pond runs the length of the garden and is a key focus. The current owners, John and Lena Borrett, along with head gardener Sue Bramhill, are maintaining the original layout while extending the seasonal planting. Sue reckons: “You can walk round every six weeks here and see a different garden.” There is a proper plant sale area with everything raised by Jill from stock in the garden – a rarity these days. I looked online for a firm to guide us and rang Exmoor Adventures, (tel: 01643 863 536) whose owner, Dan French, is a qualified mountain-biking leader. Dan was brought up near Minehead and knows every inch of Exmoor. He was friendly and encouraging and full of useful tips for the novice mountain biker; the ideal guide for a three hour expedition. Dan suggested we meet in Simonsbath, just thirteen miles away from Wheel Farm Cottages. Exmoor National Park has handily provided a colour coded off road cycle map.

ritting my teeth in determination, it was only a few more metres to the top, I told myself. I stood up and pushed hard on the bike’s pedals, forcing them to turn and propel me forward. My back was damp with sweat and my thigh muscles were getting a long-overdue wake-up call. A steady offshore breeze was blowing into my face as well, conspiring to hinder my final ascent to the top of Hoccombe Hill on Exmoor. Imagining myself on an Edmund Hillary-type mission with this modest hill as my Everest, I willed myself towards the summit, even though no world records would be set and no crowds would cheer. I wanted to do it because throughout this glorious day of mountain biking on Exmoor, I had been eager to keep up with the boys – in this case my teenage son, Gabriel, and our instructor, Dan French - as much as my middle-aged physique would allow. I was determined to make it, even if by the end it was only pride that kept me pedalling up that hill. At last! With one final surge of energy I reached the top and was met with a breathtaking view, the enjoyment only marred by the sound of my gasps for air. Tackling this hill on a bike and enjoying the subsequent panorama was one of many exhilarating moments that made our mountain biking expedition on Exmoor so gratifying. I had booked it while Gabe and I were staying at CSMA Club’s Wheel Farm Cottages (tel: 0845 345 3425 / csmaclubretreats.co.uk) in Combe Martin, Devon. Given that my teenage son considers himself far too mature for most attractions, we had pushed the boat out for a three-hour mountain biking tour.
There are few regions of Britain more suited to biking than Exmoor National Park. It boasts 400 miles of bridleways and a diverse landscape of woodland, beautiful, wide open moorland, scenic valleys and babbling brooks to explore. There are also few cars to interfere with your safety, and on Exmoor you are never short of lovely things to look at, including wildlife galore. Dan and his van were waiting for us in the centre of Simonsbath when we arrived. As he unloaded bikes and helmets, Dan explained we’d tackle a manageable 10-mile route, following the River Barle downriver for some distance, and then taking the Two Moors Way – the major north-south walking route across Devon – a short distance, before climbing onto open moorland. We hopped onto our bikes and headed off together. Immediately I said a silent prayer of thanks that the old adage about riding a bicycle proved true: once learned, never forgotten. I hadn’t cycled for about a decade, so it was a relief to realise I could cope with the narrower bike trails and keep up with the two younger and fitter members of the party, except when the odd steep hill got in the way. To top it all I discovered that during the afternoon I’d burned enough calories to enable me to scoff, with impunity, a large cream tea in Simonsbath afterwards. My idea of a perfect afternoon. Exmoor National Park has handily produced a colour-coded off-road cycle map that uses the same grades as ski runs, with routes ranging from the easiest (green) to the most challenging (black). This and other route guides are available online and in National Park Centres in Dunster, Dulverton and Lynmouth. One example of a popular cycling start point is at Nutcombe Bottom, south of Dunster. From here, there are three marked bike routes catering for all abilities. Or an easy day’s biking for families is the Tarka Trail, a 31-mile stretch of reclaimed railway line from the town of Braunton down to Meeth in Devon. It’s flat and runs along the Taw estuary, a birdwatcher’s paradise.
Devon’s endless greenery and coastline provide plenty of opportunities for adventure – everything from hiking and kayaking to the adrenaline fuelled rush of rock-climbing and coasteering make the area one big playground for families.

Living the outdoor Life: A surfers Guide to North Devon
Chris Farris gives a surfers guide to North Devon.
Croyde is one of the best beach breaks in the UK with well shaped, powerful
waves breaking over defined sandbanks. It can be surfed on all tides, although it is famous for being very heavy at low tide with the occasional barrel! ¶ The quality of the waves means that competition can be intense with hundreds of good surfers in the water. The local crew know the beach intimately and can be seen ripping when the size picks up. Croyde is best suited to intermediate to experienced surfers, although many surf schools operate safe, controlled surf lessons for beginners. ¶ Croyde Surf Club is a very active club which runs training sessions and regular competitions. Many of the club members compete at regional, national and european level. ¶ There are several car parks in the village, starting with ‘Downend’ car park as you enter Croyde from Saunton. Drive through the village and there is parking near Ruda Holiday Park with a National Trust car park a little further on. ¶ This truly is a surfing community, with many surf shops, pubs and bars catering for surfers.
Putsborough
after driving through the lanes to Putsborough, the view you get of the ocean on your way down to the car park is breathtaking. The huge headland on your left offers some protection from the prevailing South Westerly wind, so Putsborough is a good bet when the wind picks up and blows out the other beaches. The waves can be excellent, but they do tend to die away at low tide. As the tide pushes in, the waves pick up and can become big and powerful towards high tide when you need to watch out for rocks. The beach is regarded as safe, although there can be strong currents near the headland. There is currently no lifeguard cover. Putsborough can get a bit busy but it is generally a relaxed place to surf. There is a car park here with facilities such as a café, toilets and shop. 92

spot, and as such it can get busy at weekends and holidays. It is generally a mellow wave, ideal for longboards and beginners, and can offer very long rides over a sandy bottom. There is a rip current that flows out to sea along the rocks at the North end of the beach which can be used by experienced surfers to get ‘out back’. The headland offers some protection from northerly winds, but it works best on easterlies. ¶ The atmosphere is generally relaxed and fun, although when the waves are good it can get crowded and more intense. There is a very talented local crew here and competitions are often organised by the local surf club ‘Hotdoggers’. ¶ There are no RNLI lifeguards on duty at Saunton, although the local Surf Life Saving club have begun limited beach patrols on summer weekends. ¶ The parking here is the Saunton Beach car park which can get very busy in summer. Arrive early to avoid queues. There are good facilities near the beach, with cafés, surf hire and surf schools.
‘Out Back’ An area beyond the break line of the waves where surfers observe sets of waves as they approach. ‘Rip Current’ A channel of water, or a current, heading out to sea. Often simply called a rip. Sometimes recogniseable by choppy whitewater. ‘Barrel’ A wave that completely covers the surfer in the standing up position.

begins with the drive down into Woolacombe bay. The panoramic view means that you can see the swell lines marching into the beach and observe the whole set up to plan your surf. The beach is massive, and can get busy in peak season so just head south and walk for a while to find uncrowded waves. When everything comes together, the waves at Woolacombe can be excellent. The beach is safe, so ok for beginners, but do watch out for rip currents and don’t go near the rocks at the North end. There are lifeguards on duty for the extended summer season and several surf schools offering lessons for beginners and improvers. Woolacombe has a very vibrant surfing community with plenty of surf shops, bars and cafés. The local surf club ‘Woolacombe Boardriders’ holds regular competitions and there are some very talented up and coming youngsters!

A long time popular holiday destination, renowned for its beautiful beaches, countryside and the breathtaking expanse of Exmoor, North Devon is probably not renowned as a fishing mecca, well it should be!
Game Fishing From salmon and sea trout
to pristine crimson flecked brownies, North Devon is a popular location for Game Fishing. There are the trout stillwaters, offering fishing to suit most abilities and tackle hire is frequently an option. Really large specimens are a distinct possibility where trout are being reared on site and venues such as Blakewell offer truly excellent sport. In fact why not take the family there â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they will supply tackle and tuition and will clean and pack the trout you catch for you to take home! Reservoir fishing for rainbow trout is available from South West Lakes Trust at Wistlandpound near South Molton and, just over the border in Somerset, at Wimbleball.
Coarse Fishing Still waters will
be your best bet as the river Exe this far north is primarily game fishing as are the Taw and Torridge. Day ticket waters provide sport for most coarse species from silver fish ponds to specimen lakes. The further south you go the more you will find. South West Lakes Trust have small reservoirs at Bideford and Torrington offering carp to 30lb and the chance of large bags of silver fish. The renowned Stafford Moor near Dolton offers a huge variety of nationally renowned fishing on one site. Local clubs may also offer day ticket fishing on association waters.
Sea Fishing Miles of pristine Atlantic coastline
with renowned angling ports such as Ilfracombe and Clovelly and two superb estuaries where the rivers Taw and Torridge combine. There are charters fishing inshore and well into the Bristol Channel. These experienced skippers can put you on the top marks at any time of year to give you the best chance of superb catches. Most will provide tackle, bait and advice for the less experienced, a phone call will get you sorted. For a shorter trip take the family for an hours mackerel fishing or perhaps try for some bass or flatfish, again all tackle and bait can be supplied. For the shore angler there are miles of coastline and a visit to one the tackle shops near the coast will provide information on the most popular marks.

Leisurely Pursuits: Playing Straight Jeremy Ellwood, Editor of Golf Monthly Magazine, plays four of North Devon’s finest golf courses and discovers character, variety and history at every turn…
F
linging open the curtains to glorious sunshine and perhaps the most stunning seaside hotel view in England, I gazed out from a height over Saunton Sands and the Braunton Burrows, home to Saunton’s two fabled links. Over the next few days, from my base at the Saunton Sands Hotel, I’d be taking in a selection of this beautiful region’s coastal and inland golf. The weather, injury and family circumstances had seen me go pretty much from New Year’s Day to Spring Day without picking up a club, so I harboured no great ambitions for the round ahead. Libbaton is around twenty years old and plays over rolling, picturesque North Devon countryside, with the downhill par three 3rd over a pond providing an early visual treat… and a tricky club selection test. The three lengthy par fours that followed formed a sterner challenge though. “Play these in one over and you’ve done well,” said club pro and playing partner, David Jeffs. I didn’t, inevitably bogeying all three. The uphill 561-yard 12th proved particularly hard work into the wind, and I’d swear the dogleg on the 14th was greater than 90˚! But overall, my round of 82 was a pleasant surprise after my enforced sabbatical.

Next day it was the big one - finally, after twenty five years of waiting, both Saunton courses in a day starting out on the East. I had no chance of reaching the daunting 470-yard par four 1st in two into a strongish wind and racked up an easy double, but got both shots back in an instant with a rare, but welcome, eagle on the 2nd. The mighty links proved a worthy adversary on a blowy day, for though the drives are rarely intimidating visually, several more long par fours were playing straight into the teeth of the wind and pretty much out of range. Despite this, I spotted new tees going in on the 5th, 8th and 10th to take things over 7,000 yards, thus ensuring Saunton remains very much in the thoughts of those organising Britain’s top amateur events. I then played the West in glorious afternoon sunshine, and right from the dramatic par four 1st sensed more character than the East, probably because it flirts with the highest dunes more keenly. The climb up into them to the 16th tee was well worth it for the highly photogenic downhill par three that followed. As I walked off a closing short hole that must keep you on your toes right to the bitter end with a good scorecard in your pocket, I mentally awarded a hard-fought contest between Saunton’s East and West courses to the latter on account of its greater character and variety, though better weather conditions and indeed a better score - in the afternoon could just be clouding my judgment.

The following day I ventured down the A377 turning off a little way after Umberleigh for the delightfully quirky course and hotel at Highbullen in Chittlehamholt. I first played here many years ago when the new holes over the road had just gone in, and in fact celebrated my engagement on my birthday while staying in the village – so happy memories. ¶ The course is set on the spine between North and South Devon, with breathtaking views over the Taw Valley from the 12th and 16th tees and an uncanny knack of playing longer than its modest yardage. The 1st is a thoughtprovoking opener demanding accuracy off the tee before turning sharply left. You then head across the road for those newer holes and a chance to open your shoulders in places. This really is a fun place to play in an away-from-it-all setting, and also a wonderful place to stay in a family-run hotel with a real step-back-in-time feel about it.

Willingcott Valley, back up closer to the coast near Woolacombe, hails itself, “The best kept secret in North Devon” and is beautifully located either side of a valley floor. The 1st is an extraordinary par five with a distinctly linksy feel, twisting up and across the slope, after which the course then cascades startlingly back down via the remarkable 3rd, where it takes you a few seconds to fully grasp that you are indeed aiming at a green set way below you to the right. ¶ The best holes at Willingcott are in this part of the course, to which you later return via the par three 10th played from beside an old railway bridge. A menacingly close front pond means only a fool will opt for the shorter of the two clubs in his mind here. There are two more good par threes coming home, and overall, despite perhaps one too many crossover holes, it is a good and fair test where the chances to score probably outweigh the scope for disaster.

On this particular trip, time did not allow a visit to the wonderful course at Royal North Devon (or RND), but having played it a number of times before and since, it would be an unforgivable dereliction of duty not to include this unique links with strong associations to the great JH Taylor here. It’s England’s oldest course dating back to 1864, and as you set out over a couple of fairly barren holes and realise you’ll be sharing the terrain with sheep and even horses, you may just wonder what you’re letting yourself in for. But that’s all part of its charm and character. There are some tremendous holes as you turn and play more or less parallel to the coast until the long par three 8th whose green can be frustratingly elusive if the wind is howling in off the sea to your left. RND’s famous sea rushes make their presence felt on the back nine, especially the 10th, 11th and 12th where they hide the fairway you’re striving to find alarmingly. As you finally turn and head for home via the 414-yard 18th the wind may well be off the sea and on your back. But if it’s strongly against you could be standing in the fairway with a very long club indeed in your hands contemplating your chances of clearing the burn that crosses the fairway just short of the green. RND is steeped in history and has an old-school feel, but mercifully that doesn’t translate into a crusty or frosty reception. The people couldn’t be friendlier and the clubhouse, with its fascinating museum, is a wonderful place in which to debrief over a pint of the local ale and reflect on a truly unforgettable links experience.
