BEAUTIFUL Beaches Home to 27 miles of picturesque coastline, much of which is set within the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our beaches and coastline provide something for everyone. There is something special about being at the seaside and there is nothing better than a visit to one of our many beautiful beaches. They provide the ideal base for a family, where you can make sandcastles, play games and have fun in the sea! A watchful eye is kept over the resort beaches at Lowestoft and Southwold, as our fully trained lifeguards patrol them from late May to early September. They also act as lost children meeting points and First Aid points should you need them. Relax and unwind as you sit on the promenades at Lowestoft and Southwold, watching the world go by as you take in the wonderful coastal views or if you fancy something a little more active, why not take a stroll, stopping for a well deserved ice cream or afternoon tea at our award winning tearoom. And remember a trip to the seaside is not complete without indulging in some traditional fish and chips! Colourful, traditional beach huts overlook the award-winning beaches at Lowestoft and Southwold. The huts can be hired on a daily, weekly or seasonal basis throughout the summer months.
Getting away from it all, the picturesque rural beaches of Pakefield, Kessingland and Southwold Denes are ideal if you enjoy walking along the shoreline, wandering through the dunes or just relaxing and soaking up the sun in peaceful surroundings. 2010 saw six of The Sunrise Coast’s beaches win awards proving that they have achieved the highest levels of cleanliness and safety possible. Lowestoft North of Claremont Pier and Lowestoft South of Claremont Pier resort beaches were awarded prestigious FEE Blue Flag Awards. Kessingland, Southwold Denes, Southwold Pier and Southwold North of Pier beaches were awarded Keep Britain Tidy Quality Coast Awards.

BRITISH SEASIDE RESORT
Southwold Pier
23
Southwold is a wonderfully traditional seaside resort nestled along the beautiful Suffolk coastline. Its simplicity in character and traditional nature creates the perfect haven from the demands of a modern society. The award-winning beach runs alongside rows of the famous Southwold beach huts, gleaming in the sunshine in their vibrant multicolours. The popularity of Southwold was officially confirmed after the town was voted Britain’s most quintessential holiday resort in August 2007, claiming that Southwold is, and will always be, a nostalgic trip into the history of the British seaside. Southwold is a town steeped in maritime history. Its unique museum houses a collection of paintings and photographs from the town’s past, whilst the Sailors Reading Room provides an insight into life for the local fishermen in the 1800’s.
Any visitor to Southwold should take in the sights of the Harbour and a walk along the banks of the River Blyth, where you will encounter the contrast between the tranquillity of a sunrise and the activity of the local fishermen landing their catch or the rowing boat ferrying people to Walberswick. The more adventurous will find a high-speed trip on the Coastal Voyager around Sole Bay to be an exhilarating ride to remember. Southwold’s High Street is the perfect location for some serious retail therapy with a truly exceptional range of boutique-style outlets and for those who delight in finding restaurants that serve quality food exquisitely cooked, Southwold’s eating and drinking scene is ideal and many of the pubs serve local ales brewed at the famous Adnams Sole Bay Brewery.
Southwold’s maritime successes relied upon the beacon from the Lighthouse. Built in 1890 and standing an impressive 101 feet above the town, it was used to warn fishing boats of the approaching East coast. The quintessential British seaside resort would not be complete without a traditional pier. It is a contemporary twist on the conventional pier but retains a 19th century charm in everything it offers, with gift shops, a boardwalk cafe and the bizarre ‘Under the Pier Show’.

COASTAL Villages KESSINGLAND
Just four miles south of Lowestoft lies the charming village of Kessingland. Once rumoured to be the richest village in England, it is proud of its strong sense of community and has created its own unique character from its depths of historical riches! The popularity of this former fishing village now owes much to its holiday accommodation, services and award winning rural beach. At the southern edge of the village is one of the area’s largest and most popular visitor attractions, Africa Alive, giving visitors the true feel of a walking African safari experience. Kessingland owes much of its sea protection and beach conservation to one of the most famous of Kessingland’s residents, novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925), who in 1900 bought The Cliff Grange, later renamed the Kessingland Grange, as a holiday home. Whilst there, he experimented successfully with marram grass to protect the beach from the sea, and this can still be seen today, alongside other wild flowers adding an extra element to the village’s award winning stretches of coastline. The area is a haven for all wildlife and conservation enthusiasts and with many walks and cycle tracks sited around the village, Kessingland makes a perfect setting for a tranquil stroll through the countryside or on the sand and shingle beaches.
PAKEFIELD
Pakefield is an old fishing village full of character and charm, where traditional small fishing boats are still used today and can been seen moored up on the beach. The village recently became famous for its discovery of old flints dating back 700,000 years. The dunes and landscape of this section of coast provide the ideal setting for recreational activities such as walking and horse riding. The beach is also popular with fisherman where local catches include sea bass, cod and whiting. The village of Pakefield has a range of local shops and traditional pubs that offer good food overlooking the Suffolk Coast and a modern art gallery providing an extensive programme of exhibitions in a welcoming environment. The village’s main focal point is the Church of All Saints & St. Margaret, which has an interesting history. Today when visiting the church, look out for its two sheep that are responsible for keeping the lawns cut. CORTON
Located about half a mile to the north of Lowestoft is Corton. This compact village offers several holiday amenities including the region’s biggest theme park Pleasurewood Hills and two of the area’s Holiday Parks. The village sits on the cliff top and many of the homes in the village were built by the Colman family (famous for their mustard) in the 19th Century. Probably the best known landmark is the partially ruined St Bartholomew’s Church. Although the 15th Century tower stands hollow, the nave has been repaired and is now a community hall. The village also offers a convenience store and a public house offering live entertainment.
Herringfleet Mill
29
If you are looking for peace & tranquillity, The Sunrise Coast has a number of traditional villages, with ancient churches, quintessential village greens and country pubs that have remained almost unchanged over the passage of time. To the north-west of Lowestoft is the area of Lothingland, covering a number of rural villages on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. One of the best known villages is Somerleyton, situated on the edge of The Broads, six miles north west of Lowestoft, where you will find Somerleyton Hall, home to Lord & Lady Somerleyton, situated just outside the village. Nearby you will find the village of Blundeston, famous for its connections with the Victorian author, Charles Dickens. It was the fictional birthplace of David Copperfield from the highly acclaimed 19th Century novel. Blundeston also has a fine example of an East Anglian village church with part of the tower dating back as far as the 10th Century. The county border village of Lound is two miles further north. This sleepy picturesque village has a traditional country pub and rather large duck pond. To the west of Southwold is the quaint village of Reydon. The woods around the village are a popular destination with visitors and locals alike and legend tells that Reydon Hall is haunted by a headless horseman. Slightly further inland lies the village of Wrentham, with a range of services.
Part of the village is in a conservation area and many of the village buildings are listed. Between Southwold and Halesworth lies the small village of Holton, where a large proportion of houses date from as far back as the 17th & 18th Centuries; the village also contains an excellent example of a Norman Church. In the quiet countryside south-west of Bungay is the area known locally as The Saints. It is a collection of hidden English hamlets and small villages, many of which are named after Saints, eg, St Nicholas, St James & St Michael to name but a few. The Saints was an exceptionally affluent area during the Middle Ages, due to the success of the Suffolk wool trade. The wealth of the area can be seen through the high density of splendid churches, minsters and priories. Perhaps the most famous village in The Saints is the village of St Peter. This is due to the 13th Century St Peter’s Hall, which in the mid 1990s saw the creation of St Peter’s Brewery. The brewery produces a range of classic English cask-conditioned ales made from Suffolk malts and Kentish hops with water drawn from their own source within the chalk layer well, situated under the Hall. Another 13th Century hall in the area is South Elmham Hall. Renovations have opened up a complex of buildings in which a café complements business and conference facilities.
