1. Cartoon Movie, the European rendez-vous for animation film professionals More than 700 producers, investors, distributors and video game companies from 40 countries will meet in Lyon from 6 to 8 March during the 15th Cartoon Movie, the co-production forum for animation films. The aim? To create partnerships and raise financing, thus allowing many productions to be completed.

❚❚Famous directors present their new films For two days, participants will have the opportunity to view exclusively the first images of 56 projects in various stages of completion. Leader of European animation, France will be represented by 17 projects. The Nordic countries show their vitality with 10 projects, followed by Germany with 5, Spain with 4, and United Kingdom and Poland with both 3 films. Finally Belgium, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands will present 2 projects each. Famous directors will present their new films, including Sylvain Chomet (“Swing Popa Swing”), Patrice Leconte (“Music!”), Jean-François Laguionie (“Louise in the Winter”), Enzo d’Alò (“Pinocchio”), Benjamin Renner (“Ernest & Celestine”) and also Arthur Qwack (“Rise of the Zelphire”). It will also be an opportunity to discover: ❱❱ avant-garde projects: “Alpha” about the birth of the Universe, “Micromeo” about the love between a bacterium and an antibody; ❱❱ social issues: “Cafard” about the first world war, “My Mommy is in America and She Met Buffalo Bill” about the loss of a mother, “The Island of Lost Children” about a prison; ❱❱ eagerly-awaited adaptations: “Oggy and the Cockroaches”, “Little Princess and the Legend of Blue Foot”, “Loulou de Montmartre”; ❱❱ previews of completed films: “Aya of Yop City”. Target audiences of animation film continue to grow with nearly 20% of the films for young adults and adults. 25% of the projects were made for stereoscopic 3D. This new edition of Cartoon Movie once again represents the wealth of creativity in European animation film, with a wide variety of techniques and topics aimed at all audiences.

❚❚20% more distributors More than 200 buyers have confirmed their presence at the pitching forum, including the record number of 120 distributors. This represents an increase of 20% compared to last year, and 60% compared to 2009, the year Cartoon Movie opened in Lyon. Europe’s borders are opening up this year to distributors from Canada, South Korea, the United States, India, Russia and Latin America in order to expand the distribution of European works.

❚❚Convincing results Initiated in 1999 with the help of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, Cartoon Movie has obtained positive results: more than 200 animated features presented since the start have found their financing, which represents a budget of 1.4 billion EUR.

2. How Cartoon Movie works ❚❚A unique and effective formula Cartoon Movie is neither a fair nor a festival, but rather a co-production forum for European animated feature films. European producers have the opportunity to present their projects to about 700 sector professionals in order to: ❱❱ speed up financing of their project, ❱❱ find co-production partners and cross border cooperation, ❱❱ catch the eye of European and international distributors. A special feature of Cartoon Movie is that projects can be presented from the stage of concept, as well as in development, in production, or as a completed film. It is therefore the whole industrial and economic network that takes part in the development of the film, which increases tenfold the producer’s opportunities for success.

❚❚How does it work? \\ Croissant Shows The 7 and 8 March start with the traditional “Croissant Show”, an animated breakfast which gathers together all the participants in the restaurant and projects on a huge screen the trailers of the projects that will be presented that morning. The aim is to visually introduce each project on an equal basis in front of all the participants and to encourage the financial partners to attend the “pitching” sessions. Screenings, which are called “Coffee Shows”, also take place after lunch to present the afternoon projects. \\ The pitching sessions The presentations of the projects take place simultaneously in two studios. The allocated time depends on the category of the project, from 10 minutes for the projects in concept up to 30 minutes for the projects in development and in production. The completed films are shown in their entirety and are briefly introduced by the producer and/or distributor. The producers, often accompanied by their creative team, give details on all aspects of the project: concept, graphics, characters, story, planning, financing status, and viewer expectations. Short question/answer sessions are programmed at the end of each pitch. For longer discussions or interviews, a special space called “Extra Time” is set up at the exit of each studio to facilitate negotiations.

5. Cartoon Games: a gathering that is growing Wednesday 6 March from 9:00 to 18:30

Organised in collaboration with the Imaginove cluster, Cartoon Games gathers together animation film producers and video game companies in order to bring these two worlds closer and to create artistic and commercial synergies. By optimizing their strategies, both sectors can increase their revenues. The idea is to bring together independent companies in the same spirit of development as the large groups, which define a hero as a “brand” for multiple distribution platforms: cinema, video games, DVD and others. The long-term aim is to encourage the players of both worlds to develop a common project both as a feature film and video game or a digital book. Building on the success of its first edition in 2012, Cartoon Games will take place for a whole day this year, on Wednesday 6 March, just before Cartoon Movie. To date, 47 video game representatives from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany and Spain, and around 50 European animation producers are expected to attend. \\ 700 “speed dating” sessions The heart of Cartoon Games consists of one-to-one meetings of 15 minutes, organised in advance by CARTOON based on demand. Each company can choose to meet 14 representatives of the other sector. In all, 700 meetings will take place in the congress centre. This method must first lead to a better understanding of the players in both fields, as well as those of digital books who are also attending this year. Then it should enable them to enter into business relationships to better position their creativity and conquer the world market. \\ Video game speakers To open Cartoon Games, representatives of 3 iconic companies in the video game industry will present possible paths for collaboration. ❱❱ Ubisoft - Building synergies between games and animated features: Joëlle Caroline (Funding & Administration Associate Director - EMEA)

6. Animation in the French audiovisual market France is the largest producer of animation in Europe, and ranks third in the world. It produces an average of 300 hours of TV programmes and 5 to 10 feature films each year. French animation is particularly successful as an export. On average, almost one-third of the sales of French television programmes are abroad, whereas the production volume of French animation represents less than 10% of all hours produced within France. \\ Key figures: ❱❱ In 2011, the attendance at animation films increased by 7% in France with 32.37 million admissions (this figure has doubled in 10 years), which shows that there is a large audience for animation film. In addition, animation films have a longer average life in cinemas than other films. ❱❱ 5.7 % of new films in 2011 were feature-length animation films, whose revenues represented 16.2 % of total revenues for these films. ❱❱ The audience is more varied and today there are as many adults who go to see animation films as children. ❱❱ Since 2008, European animation films released in France have exceeded the number of American animation films! In 2011, 47% were European animation films compared to 35% for American animation films. ❱❱ In 2011, French animation films together had more than 4.5 million admissions in France. Cartoon Movie’s partners The 15th Cartoon Movie is organised by CARTOON with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée), the RhôneAlpes Region and Grand Lyon, in collaboration with the Imaginove Cluster.

Organised by CARTOON Cartoon Movie was devised and created by CARTOON, an international non-profit association based in Brussels, aiming to support and promote the European animation industry. For 25 years it has received financial support from the MEDIA Programme of the European Union to run its activities, which are concentrated in four areas: ❱❱ CARTOON MOVIE: a co-production forum for feature-length animation, mainly for the cinema. Cartoon Movie (about 700 participants) takes place every year in March in Lyon, France; ❱❱ CARTOON FORUM: a co-production forum for animated series, mainly for television. Cartoon Forum (about 800 participants) takes place annually in September. Next edition: 17-20 Sep. 2013 in Toulouse, France; ❱❱ CARTOON MASTERS: four training seminars per year for professionals in the industry (about 100 participants per session), dealing with specialised subjects affecting the development of skills and trade involved in animation. Next Masters: Cartoon Cine (Viborg, 16-18 Apr. 2013); ❱❱ CARTOON CONNECTION: a programme intended to explore ways of reinforcing cooperation between EU and non-EU animation professionals.
