fa, o ciclo virou! Com atraso de mais de dois anos, os consultores especializados podem, finalmente, dizer que o ciclo de alta está aí, para devolver o ânimo perdido dos pecuaristas e contribuir para a revitalização das fazendas, seja com reforma de pastos e de instalações, melhoria do manejo e dos cuidados nutricionais e sanitários. A genética também tende a ser mais valorizada nesse período de “vacas gordas” porque nós, criadores, sabemos muito bem que quanto melhor a qualidade dos reprodutores (machos e fêmeas) mais e melhores bezerros são produzidos. E melhores bezerros são animais mais precoces, que ganham peso rapidamente e chegam à idade de abate (algo em torno das 16/17 arrobas) com 24 meses em média, revertendo em mais receita. Sem dizer aqueles produtos diferenciados, acima da média, que se destacam e podem se tornar campeões em pistas, ajudar o melhoramento genético do plantel e proporcionar bom retorno em leilões, contribuindo para fechar as contas. Já vivenciei muitos altos e baixos da pecuária. Lembro com saudade dos tempos de menino quando o velho senhor João, meu pai, lutava para equacionar as contas da produção. Me lembro de não sei quantas vezes ele ameaçar abandonar a atividade porque as despesas estavam acima da receita, os preços de venda estavam ruins e as perspectivas não eram das melhores.

Mas o ‘seu’ João velho de guerra só ficava na ameaça. E quando a coisa melhorava um pouquinho que fosse, ele sempre dizia que a pecuária estava no sangue. E o ânimo voltava com tudo. Cresci ouvindo esse discurso. E adquirindo cada vez mais a mesma paixão do meu pai pela pecuária. Com algum orgulho, posso dizer que coloquei um pouco mais de ordem na casa. A equipe da Casa Branca é comprometida, as fazendas estão bem estruturadas e as raças Angus, Brahman e Simental sul-africanas são fantásticas. Como adicional, tenho dois filhos que pegaram amor pelo gado, assim como eu. O ‘seu’ João certamente está orgulhoso disso. O resultado dessa paixão é a seleção rigorosa, a definição clara de objetivos, a organização profissional do projeto, as parcerias em busca de resultados ainda superiores, a escolha de estratégias voltadas para a satisfação das necessidades do mercado, este um agente fundamental. Cattle breeding is in the blood!

After a twoyear delay, the specialized consultants can now say the cycle is up again for the cattle cattle breeders whom are now able to revitalize the cattle farms, either by reinvigorating the pastures and facilities, improving the management, or upgrading the nutritional and sanitary care. Genetics also tends to be more valued during this time of plenty because we, cattle breeders, know that the better the cattle’s quality (male and female), the more calves will be produced and the better they will be. We also know that better calves mean precocious animals, which gain weight rapidly, and reach the age of slaughter (around 16/17 arrobas – approximately 535/568 pounds) at an average of 24 months, giving us more revenue. Not to mention that differentiated products, better than the average cattle, which stand out and can become champions in the shows, contributing to the genetic improvement of the breeding herd and bringing a better return in the sales, contributing to profitability. I have experienced a lot of ups and downs in the cattle industry. I miss the time when I w a s a b o y, w h e n M r. J o ã o , m y f a t h e r, struggled to make a profit. I remember when, many times, I heard my father saying he would quit the business because the expenses were higher than the revenue, the sale prices

were bad, and the outlook was not good. But “Mr.” João, a veteran cattle breeder, would only threaten. When things were just a little bit better, he would always say that cattle breeding industry was in his blood. The vitality was back. I grew up hearing this speech and my passion for cattle breeding grew just as my father’s. I am proud to say that I “tidy things up’ a little bit better. Casa Branca’s staff is committed, the farms are well-structured, and the Angus, Brahman e South African Simmental breeds are fantastic. Additionally, I have two sons who are also passionate about cattle breeding. I am pretty sure that ‘Mr.’ João is proud of us. The result of this passion is the strict selection, the clear definition of goals, the professional organization of our projects, the partnerships we make in search of better results, the choice of strategies that are aimed to meet the market needs, which is an essential agent. The sum of all of those factors drives the path of Casa Branca. It makes us search for the unattainable perfection old João was looking for. Casa Branca aumentará em 60% a oferta de reprodutores (Angus, Brahman e Simental sul-africano) em 2008. Serão

colocados à venda 400 touros jovens, com idade média de 24 meses, com exame andrológico, produtivos, precoces, com excelente carcaça e adaptados às condições tropicais. “A demanda por reprodutores de corte de padrão superior vem aumentando em decorrência da própria necessidade de melhoria da genética bovina e, também, devido à melhoria dos preços do boi gordo. Com isso, os pecuaristas estão em busca de machos mais férteis e produtivos”, explica o criador Paulo de Castro Marques. “Por isso, ampliamos nosso projeto de seleção, intensificando a qualidade”, complementa Marques. Em 2007 a Casa Branca comercializou toda sua safra de touros Angus, Brahman e Simental sul-africano. Foram 250 machos, com destaque para o Simental sul-africano. “A Casa Branca tem o maior plantel fora da África do Sul. A procura por Simental sul-africanos cresce em todo o País devido às suas indiscutíveis qualidades produtivas e adaptação ao clima tropical. O mesmo ocorre em relação à raça Brahman, que ganha cada vez mais espaço na pecuária brasileira por sua rusticidade, precocidade e produtividade. O Angus é reconhecido mundialmente pela precocidade, fertilidade e qualidade de carne, fatores importantes no atual momento da pecuária brasileira”, ressalta Paulo de Castro Marques. 6

More Casa Branca bulls to be offered to the market

asa Branca will increase the offer of bulls (Angus, Brahman and South African Simmental) by 60% in 2008. Four-hundred young bulls are to be sold at an average age of 24 months. All of are productive, precocious, possess an excellent carcass, are adapted to the tropical climate conditions and are submitted to andrological exams. “The demand for high quality beef cattle has been increasing due to the needs of bovine genetics improvement and also due to the finished bulls higher prices. Because of that, the cattle breeders are looking for more fertile and productive males”, explains the breeder Paulo de Castro Marques. “That is why we expanded our selection project, intensifying its quality”, adds Marques. In 2007, Casa Branca sold all of its bull herds of Angus, Brahman and South African Simmental. There were a total of 250 males, highlighting the importance of the South African Simmental breed. “Casa Branca has the largest breeding herd outside of South Africa. The demand for South African Simmental has been increasing throughout the country because of its unquestionable productive quality and its adaptation to the tropical weather. The same thing happens to the Brahman’s breed, which is gaining more popularity in Brazilian cattle breeders because of its roughness, precociousness, and productiveness. Angus is recognized worldwide for its precociousness, fertility, and for the quality of its beef, important traits in today’s Brazilian cattle breeding industry”, emphasizes Paulo de Castro Marques.

uperada a crise mais aguda, o otimismo voltou à pecuária de corte no Brasil. E, segundo os especialistas, para ficar por um bom tempo. Os sucessivos aumentos nos preços da arroba do boi gordo, que ao longo de 2007 subiram até 40% em algumas regiões, saltando do patamar de R$ 53,00 (janeiro) para picos de até R$ 75,00 (novembro), fizeram reacender a luz no fim do túnel. Apesar de divergirem em alguns pontos específicos, especialistas entrevistados pela revista Casa Branca Press concordam que a arroba valorizada será a grande mola propulsora para a retomada dos investimentos no setor produtivo nos próximos meses. A lógica é simples: quanto mais dinheiro no caixa, mais expressivos também são os investimentos do pecuarista em infra-estrutura, genética e tecnologias em produtos e serviços. Nesse aspecto, os ventos parecem soprar a favor da pecuária 8

fter the sharp crisis in cattle value, optimism returned to the cattle breeding industry in Brazil and, according to specialists, the situation will remain for a long time. The series of growth in the prices of the arroba (measurement system equivalent to approximately 33.5 pounds) of the finished bull, made the light at the end of the tunnel reappear. Throughout 2007, the arroba price increased up to 40% in some areas, jumping from US$ 32.00 (January) to a high of US$ 45.00 (November). Although the specialists interviewed by the magazine Casa Branca Press disagree on specific points, they all agree that the high value of the arroba will be the big launching pad for the return of investments in the productive sector of the following months. The logic is pretty simple: the more money, the more expressive the investments of the cattle breeder in infra-structure, genetics, and product and services technology. From this perspective, the winds appear to be blowing towards Brazilian cattle breeding, because, the breeder has more and

more access to technology in the fields of genetics, nutrition, and health. He can practice short cycle cattle breeding in a really short period of time. “Which is, therefore, more profitable”, explains Thais Zimbres, a Brazilian Beef Export Industries Association (Abiec) market analyst. She highlights the level of professionalism that has already been achieved for the Brazilian cattle breeding industry as far as quality, health, and animal welfare. This level of quality is responsible for the exportation of the Brazilian meat to more than 150 countries. Brazil is the largest exporting country of bovine meat “in natura” in the world, due to the competitive advantages that no other country has. Last year, the sector generated sales of US$ 4 billion in meat. “That represents 33% of all the bovine meat consumed in the planet”, comments Thais Zimbres. That means: 1 out of 3 steaks that are consumed in the world comes from Brazilian farms. Restitution Increase – Another positive indicator of the market’s rebound occurs in the sector of animal restitution. The calf, according to the Esalq/BM&F Index, that was sold for less than US$ 200.00 at the beginning of 2007, is now worth over US$ 275.00 per head and many sales reached average prices of over US$ 300.00. The same occurs with the selling of bulls and dams, which shows that the increase in the demand compensates for the obstructed market of the previous years. A good example is the 3rd virtual sale of the South African Simmental of Casa Branca, held last September, which average prices went over R$ 5,000.00 (check the article in this edition). According to the experienced cattle breeding industry consultant, José Vicente Ferraz, Technical Director of FNP (a private consultant company specialized in agricultural businesses), in order to better understand the increase in prices, one aspect to consider is the above average number of females slaughtered in the previous years. This strategy was used by the cattle breeders during the devaluation of the arroba and is now seen in the reduction of the supply of the finished bull that goes to the cold storage plants. This was beneficial for the prices of the finished bulls since it resulted in a lack of animals for restitution in some areas. According to the specialist from the FNP Institute, the reason for the high prices of the finished bulls is the same reason for the increase in the value of animals for restitution. Additionally, according to him, the opposite would be more likely: the shortage of dams in the herd (due to increased slaughter) makes the birth of calves diminish, this reflects in the prices of the arroba. José Vicente is straightforward when he talks about the increase in the price of the arroba and the animals for restitution. “This process will continue during this year”, he says. “Although they had already increased motivation for the cattle breeder to keep the dams, the prices of the dams will grown even more in 2008 and, probably, for the majority of 2009”, he adds.

O Brasil é o maior exportador de carne bovina in natura do mundo, devido às vantagens competitivas que nenhum outro país tem. No ano passado, o setor gerou divisas de US$ 4 bilhões em carne. “Isso representa 33% de toda a carne bovina consumida no planeta”, comenta Thais Zimbres, que faz uma analogia interessante: 1 em cada 3 bifes consumidos no mundo procede de fazendas brasileiras. Reposição aquecida – Outro indicador positivo da retomada do mercado ocorre no segmento de reposição de animais. O bezerro, conforme o Índice Esalq/BM&F, que chegou a ser vendido por menos de R$ 340,00 no início de 2007, está acima de R$ 460,00/cabeça e vários leilões atingiram valores médios superiores a R$ 500,00. O mesmo acontece com a venda de touros e matrizes, que mostra aquecimento na demanda para compensar a reposição represada dos anos anteriores. Um exemplo é o 3º leilão virtual de Simental sul-africano da Casa Branca, realizado em setembro do ano passado, cujos preços médios superaram R$ 5.000,00 (veja reportagem nesta edição). Para o experiente consultor de mercado agropecuário José Vicente Ferraz, diretor técnico do Instituto FNP, para entender melhor o movimento de alta nos preços um ponto a considerar é o elevado abate de fêmeas ocorrido nos últimos anos, em níveis bem acima dos normais. Esse artifício usado pelos pecuaristas nos momentos de maior desvalorização da arroba incide, agora, na redução da oferta de boi gordo aos frigoríficos, com efeito benéfico nos preços do boi gordo, já que provocou falta de animais de reposição em algumas praças. De acordo com o especialista do Instituto FNP, os motivos da alta dos preços do boi gordo são os mesmos que impulsionam as cotações dos animais de reposição. Aliás, para ele, o mais correto seria dizer ao contrário: o desfalque de matrizes no rebanho (elevado abate) faz com que diminua o nascimento de bezerros, o que tende a repercutir também nos preços da arroba do boi. José Vicente é enfático quando fala do movimento de alta da arroba do boi e dos animais de reposição. “Esse processo continuará durante todo o ano”, diz. “Embora já tenham subido, estimulando o pecuarista a reter as matrizes, os preços da fêmea devem se elevar ainda mais em 2008 e, provavelmente, em boa parte de 2009”, complementa.

O objetivo é nobre: oferecer maior conforto às fêmeas nos 90 dias que antecedem o parto e também para a bezerrada, logo nos primeiros dias de vida. Para isso, a Casa Branca aprimora sua estrutura e centraliza maternidade.

cria sempre foi uma das maiores preocupações (e prioridades) na seleção da Casa Branca Agropastoril. Afinal, os cuidados com os bezerros são fundamentais para a obtenção de machos e fêmeas precoces produtivos. Em outras palavras: se o cuidado não ocorrer desde a prenhez, é grande o risco de perdas. A Casa Branca leva tanto a sério a cria que aprimorou sua estrutura e montou um local próprio e exclusivo para cuidar das mães e da bezerrada. O criador Paulo de Castro Marques explica: com a centralização dos nascimentos fica mais fácil para os técnicos darem atenção especial às mães antes, durante e depois do parto e também aprimorar os cuidados com os bezerros. O médico veterinário Fernando Barbosa Messora, responsável pelo manejo neonatal do rebanho da Casa Branca, explica que a Fazenda Água Limpa (Fama/MG), escolhida já desde meados de 2007 para se tornar o berço para os animais das três raças criadas pela Casa Branca, concentra todas as matrizes PO e as receptoras oriundas do trabalho de Transferência de Embriões (TE) e Fertilização In Vitro (FIV). A Fazenda Água Limpa possui 70 alqueires e originalmente serviu de base para o rebanho PO da Casa Branca. A decisão de escolhê-la para abrigar a maternidade e as futuras gerações de animais da Casa Branca levou em consideração sua infra-estrutura e também a excelente condição de pasto da fazenda, que permite manejo quase que exclusivamente em condições de campo no período das águas. Além disso, foram observados outros fatores, como localização para lá de privilegiada, às margens da represa de Furnas, que permite facilidade para formação de aguadas, e o fato de a propriedade já possuir estrutura de formação e divisão das pastagens, laboratórios com capacidade para realização,

inclusive, de pequenas cirurgias de emergência e, especialmente, mãode-obra especializada no manejo de cria. No quesito equipe, aliás, a Casa Branca não mede esforços para contar com profissionais capacitados em todas as funções na fazenda. Marcos Elízio Barbosa (Marquinhos), administrador da Água Limpa, cuida, juntamente com outro funcionário, do manejo do gado. Ele ressalta que o nível de exigências é bastante grande, não só no dia-dia com os animais, mas também no controle das informações geradas a partir do trabalho do trabalho de campo. “Nenhuma informação é gerada sem que imediatamente os peões façam seu registro em fichas individuais de identificação, as quais seguem para um programa de computador criado especificamente para essa finalidade”, comenta Fernando Messora, que chama a atenção para outro fato importante relacionado ao manejo: a ótima condição sanitária da fazenda. Quanto à importância desse trabalho para o projeto de seleção e melhoramento genético que a Casa Branca desenvolve, Fernando Messora é enfático. “Os cuidados tomados na maternidade têm influência direta em toda a vida do animal, pois o que se busca é a perfeição, com animais de aprumos corretos, sem defeitos físicos ou problemas de funcionalidade”, comenta. Nos casos em que o bezerro nasce com algum tipo de debilidade e/ou adquire problemas no parto, a Casa Branca tem como monitorar seu crescimento para saber que seqüelas ele terá. “Esse monitoramento é importante para o controle da produção”, destaca o médico veterinário. “A Casa Branca é extremamente rígida na seleção. Nenhum animal fica no programa caso tenha alguma deficiência de aprumos, produção ou reprodutiva”, acrescenta Messora.

Agua Limpa farm has 70 alqueires (one alqueire is equals to 4.84 hectares (11.960 acres) in Minas Gerais) and was originally the base for the PO herd from Casa Branca. The decision to use this farm to serve as the shelter for maternity and the future calves of Casa Branca was made based upon its infrastructure and also the excellent condition of its pasture, which allows management of the cattle, almost exclusively in the pastureland during the rainy season. Furthermore, other aspects were taken into account, such as the excellent location of the farm, located at the bank of the Furnas reservoir, which allows the formation of the pastureland. The property already has a structure and division of pastures, laboratories with capacity to perform small emergency surgeries and, especially, specialized labor in the management of the calves. As far as staff goes, Casa Branca hires the best qualified professionals in all areas of the farm. Marcos Elízio Barbosa (Marquinhos), Água Limpa’s manager, takes care of the management of all of the cattle together with another employee. He emphasizes that the requirement level is very high, not only with the daily treatment with the animals, but also in the control of information originated from the work in the fields. “All new information is recorded by the farm-hand in individual identification cards, which are then transferred to a computer system specifically developed for this task”, comments Fernando Messora, who also points out another important aspect related to management: the great sanitary condition of the farm. As for the importance of this project to the genetic selection and improvement developed by Casa Branca, Fernando Messora is emphatic. “The precautions we take at the maternity center are reflected throughout the animal’s life. What we look for is perfection, we look for animals with the correct uprightness, with no physical disability, or functional issues”, he comments. When a calf is born with some type of disability and/or if it has problems during parturition, Casa Branca has a way to monitor the calf’s growth so they know what kind of future problems it will have. “This type of monitoring system is important to control the production of calves”, mentions the vet. “Casa Branca is extremely strict in the selection process. Touro de grande porte com bezerros pequenos – de jeito nenhum!

A elevada correlação positiva entre o desmame (200d), o primeiro ano de vida (400d) e o final da vida dos animais de produção (600d) é bem conhecida. O bezerro recémdesmamado mais pesado também acabará no grupo superior aos 400 dias. Infelizmente, também há correlação genética positiva entre tais pesos e o peso no momento do nascimento. Em outras palavras: existe forte possibilidade de que um touro com elevados valores genéticos aos 200/400/600 dias produza bezerros mais pesados no nascimento, aumentando, portanto, os problemas na hora do parto. Embora existam exceções, tais reprodutores somente podem ser identificados por meio dos valores genéticos. Ou seja: é preciso mensurar os animais no momento do nascimento e aos 200d, 400d e 600d. As correlações genéticas entre os pesos dos animais são levadas em consideração pelo BREEDPLAN. Sem os valores reais do peso ao nascimento, os valores genéticos do peso ao nascer dos bezerros desmamados mais pesados também serão elevados, uma vez que se baseiam apenas nos pesos ao desmame (e pós-desmame). Por meio da determinação dos pesos no momento do nascimento e no desmame em todos os bezerros, torna-se possível identificar o touro com peso médio no nascimento e com peso ao desmame acima da média. Peso muito baixo no nascimento causa problemas de parto?

Buscamos valor genético que proporcione menos peso do bezerro ao nascer, mas também cuidamos para que esse peso não seja muito baixo. Essa condição normalmente conduz a

Because of the positive genetic correlation among weights, selection for high 200/400/600 days breeding values will invariably also increase mature weight/size, which will result in higher maintenance requirements. Our society strives towards high 200/400.600 days breeding values which will then level out to a mature cow weight (MCW) around breed average. Keep in mind that only breeders who weigh their cows are able to identify animals with high growth rate and aver age MCW. These genetic correlations among weights are taken into account by BREEDPLAN. Without real birth weights, the birth weight breeding values of the heavier weaners will also be high, since they are based only on weaning (and post weaning) weights. Unfortunately there is also a positive genetic correlation between these weights and birth weight. There is a strong pos sibility that a bull with high 200/400/600 days breeding values will sire calves with high birth weights and therefore increase calving problems. There are exceptions, but such bulls can only be identifi ed through breeding values. These bulls are only identifi able if birth, 200d, 400d and 600d weights are taken.

We aim for a low birth weight breeding value, but guard against too low. It normally leads to lower growth and hence smaller daughters with smaller

Genetic relationships with eye pigment

A student that used our classification data found that eyelid pigmentation was correlated to co-lour. He proved in his dissertation that selection for yellow animals could improve the incidence of eye pigment faster than direct selection for eye pigment in red/ brown animals. Udder attachment and teat size

Much research has been done on genetic correla-tions in dairy breeds, the conclusions of which can’t be applied to dual purpose or beef breeds, because the ideal of dairy and beef breeds dif-fer. An American who had classified udder at-tachment and teat size in beef breeds found that these two traits were correlated. In other words: selection for the one would influence the other. Selection for thick teats will, for example, weaken udder attachment. THE RESULTS OF UNDESIRABLE GENETIC CORRELATIONS OF NATURE CAN MOSTLY BE AVOIDED BY EMPLOYING A BALANCED APPROACH THROUGHOUT. How do I select for adaptability?

Inseminação artificial, transferência de embriões, fertilização in vitro, bipartição de embriões, IATF, sexagem de sêmen, clonagem... As técnicas modernas potencializam a qualidade genética dos animais superiores.

á apenas duas décadas, a soma do rebanho bovino brasileiro representava apenas 30% das cerca de 170 milhões de cabeças (dados do Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento) que formam a população bovina atual. De lá para cá, no entanto, muita coisa mudou na pecuária, além do crescimento do plantel. O campo passou por uma verdadeira revolução tecnológica, que mudou o jeito de o criador brasileiro trabalhar. Esse salto, tanto quantitativo como qualitativo, deve-se não somente à profissionalização das fazendas – que se tornam verdadeiras empresas pecuárias –, mas, também, à modernização das práticas e às novas ferramentas de manejo, dentre elas, a que envolve a reprodução. Inseminação Artificial e Transferência de Embriões, tecnologias mais utilizadas até meados da década de 1990, ganharam a companhia de outras técnicas, caso de Inseminação Artificial em Tempo Fixo (IATF), Fertilização In Vitro (FIV) e Sexagem de Sêmen, tecnologias incorporadas recentemente ao manejo das fazendas e que, aos poucos, começam a ser usadas em larga escala por pecuaristas de todo o Brasil. Os protocolos para sincronização de cio e a IATF têm sido cada vez mais utilizados pelas vantagens que trazem ao manejo reprodutivo. Uma delas: acabam com um problema antigo das fazendas de criação, que precisam ter um peão para cuidar exclusivamente da observação de cio na vacada. Com a IATF isso simplesmente não existe. Além disso, a técnica promove economia com mão-de-obra e diminuição da estação de monta de 90 para 30 dias. Além disso, o produtor não precisa comprar nem o botijão de nitrogênio e a reconcepção gira em torno de 50% a 65%, 59 dias após o parto, índice considerado bom. Outra tecnologia lançada recentemente e que já mostra resultados muito bons no manejo reprodutivo é o uso da Sexagem de Sêmen. O pecuarista pode escolher o sexo do bezerro antes mesmo da fecundação. À medida que a tecnologia se torna mais conhecida e ganha credibilidade entre os criadores, 16 Casa Branca Press

cresce também a procura. A central de genética Lagoa, de Sertãozinho (SP), por exemplo, disponibiliza sêmen sexado de vários reprodutores de corte e de leite, como Grand Prix, da Casa Branca. “Grand Prix é um reprodutor Angus de genética excepcional. Poucos animais atingem a qualidade necessária para ter o sêmen sexado, já que o critério é bastante rigoroso. Grand Prix é um desses touros”, diz Alexandre Zadra (foto), gerente de produtos taurinos da Lagoa Em países do continente europeu, com pecuária mais avançada, mais de 90% da reprodução do rebanho ocorrem com o uso de alguma técnica reprodutiva artificial. No Brasil, apenas 5% das fazendas se valem dessas tecnologias, percentual que corresponde a apenas 10% do rebanho total, segundo dados da Associação Brasileira de Inseminação (Asbia). Mas, as estimativas são promissoras: a entidade identificou crescimento de 20% para a IA, em 2007, em comparação ao ano anterior. “Tivemos dois anos difíceis, com a crise da aftosa em 2005, mas recuperamos e estamos voltando a crescer”, argumenta Ricardo Reuter Ruas, consultor da Asbia. Entre as outras técnicas usadas na reprodução, no último ano verificou-se redução de 40% na utilização da Transferência de Embriões, com o seu direcionamento apenas às vacas provadas, o que é considerado positivo por analistas do setor. Por outro lado, a Inseminação Artificial em Tempo Fixo (IATF) apresentou crescimento expressivo, sendo responsável por 1 milhão de nascimentos só no Brasil.

High-skilled labor: Achilles’ ankle

Em um ponto os selecionadores e técnicos concordam. A mão-de-obra de qualidade disponível para as práticas de técnicas reprodutivas ainda deixa a desejar, apesar da crescente demanda por esses serviços. Ricardo Ruas (foto), consultor da Asbia, explica que há cursos de gestão e de inseminação à disposição, mas, mesmo assim, há profissionais com longa experiência que não se sentem motivados a se reciclar. “Quando fazemos palestra sobre o assunto, percebemos que os profissionais utilizam métodos diferentes um dos outros, mas é muito difícil mudar a mentalidade e fazê-los entender que os processos mudaram e existem técnicas mais produtivas hoje”, explica Ruas. A questão da mão-de-obra é tão séria que é apontada por especialistas como o principal motivo de a IA ser realizada em apenas 7% das fazendas brasileiras. “Muitos pecuaristas investem na inseminação, mas se o processo é mal realizado e não produz o retorno esperado, mesmo que por falha no processo, ele desiste e volta à monta natural”, assinala o veterinário da Asbia.

Cattle selectors and technicians agree on one point. Highly-skilled labor in the practice of reproductive techniques is still missing, although there is a high demand for those services. Ricardo Ruas (photo), Asbia’s consultant, explains that although there are a lot of courses in management and artificial insemination, the experienced professionals do not feel motivated to be up-to-date. “When we gave a lecture about the issue, we noticed that the professionals in the field use various types of techniques, one different from the other, and it is really difficult to change their mentality and make them understand that the techniques have changed. Nowadays, the market offers more productive ones”, explains Ruas. The issue about labor is so serious that specialists say it is the main reason why AI is used in only 7% of the Brazilian farms. “Many cattle breeders invest in insemination, but if the technique used is poor and does not bring the results that were expected, even though it is the technician’s fault, the cattle breeder gives up and returns to natural insemination”, points out Asbia’s vet.

Em 1912, russos conseguiram inseminar animais em grande escala, também com a utilização de eqüinos. Desde essa época, estudiosos se debruçaram em pesquisas para manter o espermatozóide em baixas temperaturas, com a utilização do nitrogênio líquido. Só em 1949, pesquisadores ingleses conseguiram conservar o sêmen bovino por longo período, o favoreceu a difusão da inseminação artificial. No Brasil, a primeira inseminação aconteceu de forma experimental em 1940 e, somente após uma década, começou a ser utilizada a campo. Na década de 70, apareceram as primeiras centrais de inseminação, que se uniram para criar a Asbia, em 1974. Hoje, calcula-se que mais de 100 milhões de vacas são inseminadas todos os anos, no mundo.

Old process; new evolution Artificial Reproduction might have started in 1332, when the Arabs inseminated the horses, but real records are missing. In 1912, the Russians were able to inseminate animals on a large scale, also, by using horses. From that time on, researchers have been studying ways of preserving the sperm in low temperatures, with the use of liquid nitrogen. Only in 1949, English researchers were able to preserve the bovine semen for a long period of time, which collaborated with the artificial insemination. In Brazil, the first insemination occurred in an experimental way in 1940, and, but only after a decade did it began to be used in the pastures. In the 70s, the first insemination centers appeared, and they united in order to create Asbia in 1974. Nowadays, it is estimated that more than 100 million cows are artificially inseminated every year in the world.

Artificial insemination, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, embryo partition, fixed-time artificial insemination, sperm sexing, cloning. These modern techniques boost the genetic quality of the high level animals.

wo decades ago, the Brazilian bovine herd sum represented only 30% of the 200 million bovine heads in the world (data collected from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply). Other than the growth of the breeding herds, a lot has changed in cattle breeding since then. The pastures have gone through a technological revolution that changed the way the Brazilian breeder works. This jump, both quantitative and qualitative, is due to the increasing professionalism of the farm (which have become real cattle breeding industries), and also due to the modern techniques and the new management tools, among them, the ones related to the reproduction. The pioneering of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer, the most used technologies until the middle of the 90s, have been slowly improved and new types of technology have aroused, such as Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Sperm Sexing, technologies that were recently incorporated into the farm’s management. These technologies have slowing began to be used on a large-scale for cattle breeders throughout the world. The protocols for the synchronization of heat and the FixedTime Artificial Insemination have been increasingly used due to the advantages they bring to the reproductive management. One of the advantages is the fact that those techniques fix a problem the farms would have: the necessity of having a farmhand to exclusively observe the times of heat of the cows. With the Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination, this problem does not exist. The technique also promotes savings in terms of labor needed and also lowers the insemination time from 90 to 30 days. Additionally, the farmer does not need to purchase a nitrogen container and reconception rate is 50% to 65%; 59 days after the parturition, which is a good indicator. 18 Casa Branca Press

Another type of technology released recently, and that has been showing good results is the reproductive management through Sperm Sexing. The cattle breeder is able to choose the cattle gender before the fertilization. The more the technology is known and gains credibility with the breeders, the more demand grows. The genetic center Lagoa, of Sertãozinho (SP), for example, is offering the sperm sexing from many beef and dairy cattle, such as Grand Prix, from Casa Branca. “Grand Prix is an Angus bull of extraordinary genetics. Few animals reach the type of quality necessary for sperm sexing, as the criteria is really strict. Grand Prix is one of those bulls”, says Alexandre Zadra, manager of bull products of Lagoa. In European countries, where the cattle breeding industry is technologically advanced, more than 90% of the herds reproduction occurs due to the usage of some type of artificial reproductive technique. In Brazil, only 5% of the farms use this type of technology, the percentage is equal to only 10% of the total herd, according to the data of the Brazilian Association of Artificial Insemination (Asbia). But the future looks promising; the institution identified a growth of 20% for Artificial Insemination in 2007, compared to the previous year. “We had two difficult years, with the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in 2005, but we have recovered, and we are growing again”, states Ricardo Reuter Ruas, Asbia consultant. Among the other techniques used in the reproduction of cattle, last year there was a reduction of 40% in the use of Embryo Transfer. The Embryo Transfer was only used on tested cows, which is considered a positive sign according to analysts in the field. On the other hand, Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination grew substantially, being responsible for 1 million births in Brazil alone.

The animal management is applied without discrimination. From the 300 cows that begin heat each year, the selection searches primarily for the females that have high maternal and weaning breeding value. Reproduction is made almost exclusively through artificial insemination and the reproductive rates of the cows are highly satisfying.

According to Ignácio Silva Telechea, who is responsible for the herd’s management, the level of pregnancy registered in the Rincon del Sarandy´s females was 93% in 2007. The number has been stable through the last several generations. Other important result to highlight relates to the management of the embryo collection of 30 Angus donor cows and to the success in the transfer of the embryos. Per year, each lot of 15 females go through three embryo collection to remove oocytes, this collection process is repeated only every two years. “This precaution is taken to assure the health and welfare of the dams”, comments Ignácio. “Resting for a year is extremely important in order to guarantee the longevity of the dams. By adopting this approach, Rincon del Sarandy is able to extend the productive life time of the females by 10 to 15 years”, he states. This type of embryo transfer in Angus PC and Brangus recipients has obtained a success rate of 55% and represents 1/3 of births. Furthermore, Rincon del Sarandy gives special attention to the herd’s nutritional management, a key aspect that relates directly to the results of reproduction. The females’ body condition is observed in very small groups, almost individually. Body condition has been maintained at the range of 3.5 on a scale of 1 to 5. This is no secret. The important thing is to guarantee a satisfactory pastureland and adequate support for each stage during production. FA El Shawan, the Arabian horse that Casa Branca keeps in partnership with four other Brazilian breeders, has once again won the National Championship of the breed at a contest held in November, in Ribeirão Preto, SP, that brought together more than 600 Arabic horses from 260 Brazilian, European and North-American breeds.

A El Shawan, competing with the 26 best Brazilian horses of its generation, was chosen as the Colt National Champion unanimously by the 5 international judges that participated in the event. This event is considered one of the most important Arabian Horse events in the world. Now, FA El Shawan is moving forward with its promising career, that began in 2006 when the horse was the champion of the Junior Male National Championship, winning, once again unanimously. Right after the victory, the French breeder, Joseph Genene, a disputed “restauranter” of Saint -Tropez, made a millionaire offer to the owners Paulo Marques of Casa Branca, Abel Leopoldino of Canaã , Jairo Queiroz Jorge of Faveiros, Rodrigo de Castro of Paineiras and Jaime Pinheiro of Vila dos Pinheiros. The owners rapidly refused the offer. The breeder Paulo Marques explained the reason for the refusal: “My position, together with the other partners, was to show the market, that we are clearly aware of the potential of a horse such as El Shawan. á três anos, a aula inaugural de caratê do Projeto Esporte Solidário atraiu tanta gente que lotou a quadra de esportes do bairro Cidade Jardim, em Pouso Alegre (MG). Hoje, o projeto é uma realidade incontestável: já são 1.500 crianças, entre 5 e 14 anos, atendidas de segunda a sexta-feira por essa iniciativa do professor de educação física João Batista Rodrigues. Todos os sábados, João Batista percorre 14 quilômetros pelas ruas do bairro São João, um dos seis núcleos atuais do projeto, para ensinar sua arte às crianças da comunidade. “É em lugares assim que eu mais gosto de trabalhar. Isso é a minha vida”, não se cansa de dizer. E para não fugir à regra, nesse caso a recíproca também é verdadeira. Para quem vem de família humilde e já trabalhou de engraxate, lavrador e até vendedor de picolé, tornar-se técnico campeão pan e sul-americano de caratê (por três vezes), além do tetracampeonato brasileiro e mineiro (sete) é uma vitória e tanto na vida. Troféu ainda mais importante é mudar a trajetória da vida de filhos de pais infratores em comunidades carentes. “É uma filosofia de vida, que transformou a minha e pode fazer o mesmo com a de outros cidadãos de bem”, explica João Batista, que além de técnico das seleções mineiras de caratê para até 20 anos (infantil, infanto-juvenil, juvenil e júnior) – MinasKan Karate-Do/Vodol –, também já foi Árbitro da Confederação Brasileira e diretor de esportes em Pouso Alegre. Recém-chegado da disputa pelo campeonato mineiro de caratê, em Ituiutaba (MG), quando conversou com a reportagem da revista Casa Branca Press – e de onde voltou mais uma vez campeão, com quatro medalhas de ouro, três de prata e quatro de bronze, João Batista diz querer encontrar futuros vencedores entre a ociosidade e a alta incidência de drogas registrada na periferia. Para ajudar na árdua tarefa, quem o acompanha quase sempre é uma de suas alunas mais pródigas, Jéssica Dalt Cândido – quando os dois entram em sala de aula convidando os estudantes da periferia pouso-alegrense a participar do projeto, são muitos os olhos que brilham, explica João Batista. Quem também empresta a fama no mundo do esporte para a causa é a carateca Lucélia Ribeiro, única brasileira tricampeã nos Jogos Pan-Americanos. Quando ela recebeu a medalha de ouro na categoria até 60 quilos na última edição dos jogos, no Rio de Janeiro, lá estavam os alunos do Projeto Esporte Solidário para acompanhar o feito histórico e aplaudi-la. Como reconhecimento pelo bom trabalho prestado, João Batista Rodrigues recebeu o título de cidadão pouso-alegrense e a medalhas do fundador da cidade e da Inconfidência Mineira, concedidas pela Câmara Municipal. hree years ago, the first karate class of Projeto Esporte Solidário brought so many people that filled the sports court from Cidade Jardim district, in Pouso Alegre (MG). Nowadays, the project is an unquestionable reality: there are 1,500 kids, between 5 and 14 years of age, who are attended from Monday to Friday, due to an initiative from the physical education teacher, João Batista Rodrigues. Every Saturday, João Batista travels 14 kilometers through the streets of São João district, one of the six current centers of the project, to teach his art to the kids from the community. “Those are the places where I most enjoy working. This is my life”, he always says. His students also share his feelings. From a person who comes from a poor family and has worked as a shoeshiner, a field worker, and ice-cream seller, to become the coach of champions is a great victory in life. João has won as coach the Pan and South American karate championship (three times), the Brazilian championship four times and the Minas Gerais championship seven times. The most important accomplishment is being able to change the lives of children in the poor communities whose parents have broken the law. “It is a philosophy of life, that changed my life and can also change the lives of other citizens who are trying to practice good values”, explains João Batista, who, beside being the coach of the karate leagues of Minas Gerais for students up to 20 years old (infantile, infant-juvenile, juvenile and junior) – Minas-Kan Karate-Do/Vodol – was also the Referee of the Brazilian Confederation and director of sports in Pouso Alegre.

He returned from the tournament as a champion coach again, with four gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals, João Batista says he wants to find future winners among the environment of idleness and high drug use located in the outskirts of the city. In order to help in this difficult task, the person who assists him is one of his most brilliant students, Jéssica Dalt Cândido. When both of them go in the classrooms to invite the students from the outskirts of Pouso Alegre to join the project, a lot of kids feel enthusiastic about it, explains João Batista. Another important figure who also uses her fame in the sports world to aid in the cause is the karate player, Lucélia Ribeiro, the only three time winner of the Pan-American Games. When she received the gold metal in the up to 60 kilos (135 lbs) category in the last games, held in Rio de Janeiro, the students from Projeto Esporte Solidário where there to observe the historical moment and applaud her. five. His father, Raimundo Sérgio Marques, who is also a field worker, introduced his sons to animal husbandry since they were really young. Time went by, and the love this boy began to have for the farm management increased. After finishing school and working for some farms nearby, he started working for Casa Branca Agropastoril. In the beginning, he worked as a farmhand, but he soon faced his first challenge. At only 20 years old he was invited to manage Pinhal farm, at the neighboring district Turvolândia, where until today it is the base of the Simmental herd of Casa Branca. Marquinhos remembers that, in those days, the farm had been recently purchased by the breeder Paulo de Castro Marques and that, therefore, there was a lot to do in terms of structure. With a lot of hard work, slowly the property was improving its pastures, the fences, and the barn to keep the calves, composed of animals with imported genetics. “Everybody thought I would not be able to handle the work because I was too young and I did not have a lot of experience with the type of job”, comments the young administrator, who has recently faced another big professional challenge in the group. After seven years working at Casa Branca’s properties, the young administrator remembers, with enthusiasm, the obstacles he had to face and overcome in the past. For him, the biggest challenge in working with the herd was the fear of disappointing the people who gave him this opportunity. He states, “Working at Casa Branca brings personal satisfaction. It is a serious company that values its employees”. Working in the management of Casa Branca maternity since last year, Marquinhos is involved in the management of the pregnant cattle 90 days before parturition, with the empty cows, the embryo recipients, and the calves younger than 30 days old. The work includes branding and tagging cattle, giving vaccines, and giving pre and post parturition care. “Most of the knowledge I have of cattle breeding I learned here in Casa Branca”, he emphasizes. As for the future, Marquinhos tries to be careful and does not make big plans.
