From the Head of School The 2009-10 school year was a year of progress. The shape of our year took on an optimism and hopefulness that stands at the heart of an excellent school experience. Great strides were made toward important new curricular priorities aimed at preparing students for the 21st century, including a deep commitment to collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. And our seniors graduated with the accolades and honors we’ve come to expect from our students. More than $3.5 million in merit aid was granted to the class of 2010 alone, and an incredible 75 percent of all applications they sent to universities were accepted for admission! Artists, politicians, business owners, academicians, athletes and community-builders alike spring forth from this amazing place. The structure and attention we provide to each of our students provides the tools and attitudes necessary to develop into adults who achieve success in life. We are committed to our work, and we are so fortunate to be able to do it here on this beautiful campus surrounded by so many who have chosen to walk alongside us. Casady School has a long history of offering its students experiences that truly impact their lives. In order to continue this tradition, we – like the vast majority of independent schools in the country – depend on the deep generosity of people like you who believe in our mission and in our ability to shape and nurture our young people. Each and every year we budget an annual giving amount to cover the gap between tuition paid and the actual cost of educating our students. I am happy to report to you that we exceeded our 200910 annual giving target. Our goal simply could not have been
reached without the hard work and dedication of Annual Fund Co-Chairs Leslie and Stuart Milsten, Heidi and Chuck Cohn, Susie and Brad Kemp and Caroline and Guy Patton. Another important factor in our success last year: 100 percent of our faculty and staff gave to Casady through the Annual Fund, along with gifts from each and every Trustee. The Casady Parents’ Organization also contributes significantly to the annual needs of our School through multitudes of volunteer hours and numerous fundraisers throughout the year. Janet Jones, last year’s CPO President, provided able leadership to this dedicated and active group of volunteers. With the appointment of Laura Lang as our new Director of Institutional Advancement, and Heidi Cohn as our Director of Annual Giving, we are poised to take our fundraising to a new level. Your continued support is deeply appreciated. Additional key staff coming on board for this year also bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of diverse experiences to enrich our campus leadership. Among many others, our new Athletic Director, Steve Shelley, is fully committed to ensuring the program maintains its commitment to excellence and continues to serve the needs of our students. Our new Primary Division Director, Jane Sharp, arrives with a deep understanding of and expertise in early childhood education. Our work is simple: prepare our students for success. We know that our students leave Casady with the skills and knowledge to pursue their lives as constructive citizens who strive to make their world better, but we also firmly believe that while here at Casady, our work is centered on helping them succeed each and every day: on the stage, on the fields and in the classroom. We cannot achieve this vital aim without the support and encouragement you provide. A strong partnership between the School and home is what makes our work possible. And continued ties with our alumni both affirm our track record of success and keep us focused on what our current students can and will become. Once again, I thank you for your continued belief in the mission of our School.
With sincere gratitude,
Christopher C. Bright Head of School

From the Bishop It was a little over a year ago that we broke ground and began construction on the new math facility and expansion of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor. While the Oklahoma weather has caused some delays, we are moving forward with the transformation of our Casady campus. Transformation is at the heart of the mission of Casady School: The transformation and formation of our students in preparation for the opportunities they will have in their lives. Through the commitment of our Board of Trustees, Head of School, staff, faculty, parents and students, Casady School is moving fully into the 21st century. Our academic programs offer students the tools necessary to meet the challenges of our ever-changing world; and St. Edward’s Chapel lays the foundation that will guide our students morally and ethically in their chosen vocations. I am excited by the vision for the future of Casady School and want to thank all who contribute in so many ways to Casady’s success. Faithfully,

Creative In t e g r a t i o n Successful scientists and artists think creatively in order to solve problems and to address important issues and problems in our world. At Casady, our guiding question has always been centered on how we best meet the needs of each of our students, and as we look toward the future, and as we plan for the future, bringing the arts into the core of the Upper Division curriculum, both physically and programmatically, simply makes sense. Head of School Christopher C. Bright, Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer Nathan Sheldon along with the administration and the Board of Trustees are addressing the elements of Casady’s integrated curriculum and the opportunities that the School has for educating students in the 21st century. The Forward Focus campaign funded several capital improvements to the campus that are inherent to the School’s long-term physical plan and will also enable the administration to incorporate these key programmatic changes. Besides the new Upper Division W. R. Johnston Math Building and the expansion of St. Edward’s Chapel, the next new structure planned is the Upper Division science and fine arts building. Further physical changes to the campus will include some remodeling and renovation to Fee Theater. Now, let’s think about that pedagogy of converging science with the fine arts. By bringing the arts into the same physical space with science labs, Casady will align itself with a whole new approach to scientific and creative thinking for its students. Architectural Design Group of Oklahoma City, the architect for both the math and science facilities, has been charged with further developing the science building to

accommodate classrooms for the visual arts. “We are planning to bring the arts into the core of the Upper Division experience. Creativity is at the heart of all of our worthwhile endeavors, in the studio and the labs. Bringing arts and sciences together sends a strong message of collaboration, and it will certainly enhance the experience for each student,” said Mr. Bright. Think blue crystals. In the accelerated chemistry class, students grow blue crystals from a tiny seedling of Copper Sulfate. Although many students will admit that the “true prestige” in growing a blue crystal is the size, one still can’t help but notice the beauty and true art of the traditional blue crystal project and how this development took place. From a visual standpoint, put that blue crystal in an art room and just think of the possibilities. Both the arts and sciences must begin with important questions that frame and focus research and exploration in order to improve things and highlight the beauty and complexity that surrounds us. “Cognitively, the process that artists use to think through problems and to pose questions is very similar to the scientific method,” said Mr. Bright. “With a faculty that is interested

in talking to and planning with one another, there will be considerable cross pollination between the two disciplines. Apart from practical efficiency considerations, the benefits to both programs are real. Greatly improved exhibition space and state-of-the-art science labs will give our students opportunities to thrive both as scientists and artists. A number of universities, colleges and other organizations are moving this direction,” he said. The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation is one example. OMRF has recently initiated a project to integrate the arts and the sciences. Through the OMRF Creativity Project, seven of its top scientists composed original classical music pieces during a week-long “musical boot camp” as an experiment to explore the similarities between creativity in scientific pursuits and creativity in music. The pieces were then performed by a string quartet from the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Dr. Stephen M. Prescott, President of OMRF, is on the board of Creative Oklahoma, and Mr. Bright is on the subcommittee for education. Another project modeled on this approach is the ArtScience Innovation Prize. The project originally began in
Boston, at Harvard University’s Idea Translation Lab. The competition challenges students to merge the disciplines of art and science in the process of inventing a novel approach or new invention. Leaders with Creative Oklahoma have now brought the project to Oklahoma and several schools are participating this year. Casady hopes to participate during the next school year. “I think that increasingly we have to remember that integrating a child’s experience across the curriculum is our aim, and if we can do that effectively, and the child understands that a process in one discipline resonates in another discipline with a different type of approach, then learning becomes very deep and very long lasting,” said Mr. Bright. By moving ceramics, painting, printing and drawing into the Upper Division science facility, a tremendous amount of space in Fee Theater will be freed allowing an opportunity to convert the art studios and into performance art spaces, specifically percussion, strings, orchestra, theater or winds; thereby lessening the impact on Fee Theater’s stage. This would allow the full Fee Theater complex to be entirely

dedicated to the performing arts so that these groups will have the proper space for Casady to further develop its music and performing arts programs. “Despite the space crunch, we’ve soldiered through and done well to accommodate the kids and the fine arts programs because we have wonderful faculty. These modifications will make it increasingly possible for kids to have more choices and to pursue their passions in whichever branch of the arts they’d like, while we continue to deepen our arts and science education initiatives,” Mr. Bright said. The specific cost of the science and arts building and changes to Fee Theater are still being developed as the plans have crystallized. ADG is generating the drawings based on conversations that the science and arts faculties have had together with Upper Division Director Peter Huestis, Dean of Students Matt Peña, Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Bright. Not only will this new space benefit the instruction of our students, but dollar-wise it will also be a more economical approach to unify these two projects. Casady’s Board of Trustees has required that capital projects may begin only when the School has 100 percent cash in hand. The public phase of the capital campaign has come to a close as approximately $16 million has been pledged specifically for capital projects of the $45 million total raised. The strategy now is to collect the cash that has already been pledged and to allow those who would like to participate in the campaign, but haven’t yet, to have the opportunity to do so. “Realistically, I see the science and arts building beginning in the next couple of years. It’s an important priority because our science facility needs to be improved soon,” said Mr. Bright. “The priorities within the campaign are continuing and will be met. We have had incredible generosity from the community.”
Oklahoma City is playing host to the Creativity World Forum in November when many leaders and interesting thinkers from around the world will join together to present an incredible educational event. Christopher C. Bright, Casady’s Head of School, is on the subcommittee for education of Creative Oklahoma. Speakers will include Daniel Pink, Sir Ken Robinson, Scott Noppe-Brandon, David Edwards, Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci, John Herrington, David Pogue, Carol Coletta, Blake Mycoskie, Andrew Zolle and Pranav Mistry. “We are going to bring as many teachers and kids as we possibly can, and in fact, one of the things I am hoping to do is to have some of our juniors and seniors be helpers, facilitators and ushers,” said Mr. Bright. Creative Oklahoma’s mission is to establish Oklahoma as a world-renowned center of creativity, innovation in commerce, culture and education.

Digital World by Peter Huestis, Director of Upper Division
There is a new paradigm of education for the 21st century, and Casady School’s Upper Division is on board! We are striving for enhancements in our people, practices, programs and places to answer the needs of the 21st century student. We must be bold, collaborative, flexible, creative, curious and zealous as we prepare students for their future rather than our past. Blackboards have become SmartBoards; notebooks are being replaced by laptops and iPads; and textbooks are less relevant than ever when stacked up against open source environments. Adolescent culture is also very different in today’s world and we must strive to understand and appreciate student motivation, curiosity and the role positive relationships between faculty and students play in our School. As a community we must ask ourselves: Are we intimidated, frightened, or skeptical of this movement toward a 21st century education, or is it something that we support and will work feverishly toward in the interest of our children’s future?
Philosophy and Vision Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines philosophy as the most basic beliefs, concepts and attitudes of an individual or group. The philosophy and vision of the Upper Division will help position Casady for continued viability as an institution that focuses on preparing for success both in the present and in the future. Historically, Casady graduates have been well prepared for college, and life, after successfully navigating the rigor and challenges put before them by a very talented and caring faculty. There is now a renewed sense of urgency to ensure that individually defined success, confidence and passion are part of all current students’ experience as well. This must be our common philosophy; our basic belief and our attitude. Education in the 21st century is about much more than just getting technology into our classrooms and the students’ hands. It is about adopting new ideas about motivation, assessment and the impact of positive relationships that independent schools may not have considered in the past. The digital and global marketplace, which includes college, has changed greatly even in recent years. As presented by researchers, academicians and authors, educational institutions must make changes parallel to those taking place in the digital world. While Casady will not stop teaching the basic skills associated with the traditional Three R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic), it is time to go beyond those ideals, established by Sir William Curtis in 1825, and adopt an updated version of the Three R’s outlining the importance of Rigor, Relevance and Relationships in our schools.
8
9
• Rigor is not about regurgitating facts in an articulate way in an essay or about solving a geometry proof. Rigor is also not defined by the amount of homework assigned or ensuring that grades fall within a perfect bell curve for the umpteenth year in a row. Instead, rigor is being redefined by the skills that college professors and employers in the global marketplace want Casady graduates to have. Tony Wagner, in his book titled The Global Achievement Gap, outlines the skills that his research indicates are necessary for success in the 21st century: critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and leadership, agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurialism, effective oral and written communication, accessing and analyzing information, and curiosity and imagination. At Casady, much of our curriculum and methodologies incorporate these proficiencies, but some are new and some need updating. For instance, effective oral and written communication must now include digital literacy, writing for online publications, social networking and the ability to present topics to a group in addition to writing a research paper. We must consider that collaboration, or group projects, are now global initiatives. A class project may involve collaboration with a partner in India,
10
Argentina and Japan using Skype, Facebook, or Google Docs. Technology and an appreciation for different cultures and languages are vital tools to help students prepare to succeed. • Relevance is increasingly important to students as they must feel invested in a topic to remain focused and motivated. The National Center for Educational Statistics reports that only 28 percent of recent high school graduates in the U.S.A. felt coursework was meaningful while a mere 21 percent felt coursework was interesting. Meanwhile, just 38 percent felt school work would have any bearing on the rest of their lives. Studying 21st century adolescent culture and the dramatic changes in the ways teenagers are motivated and what interests them results in interesting findings. Students often feel the need to know how the lesson they are learning will be applicable to them in their lives. They will continually ask, “Why does this matter?” before becoming engaged in the activity. As educators, we must tap into students’ intrinsic motivation, which is a fascination with the subject, a sense of its relevance to life and the world. Extrinsic motivation is no longer enough
as parental expectations, expectations of other trusted role models, earning potential of a course of study, grades and scholarships simply do not turn on the 21st century learner as was the case in past years. Daniel Pink, in his recent book titled Drive, proposes that autonomy, mastery and purpose are vital factors if we expect to keep today’s students engaged. The International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) has created the Rigor/Relevance Framework, which indicates that as students gain knowledge, they must also progress along the application model. Students must be able to see how the material they are learning is or will be put to use. The ICLE also states that all students must understand and conceptualize relevant applications for each academic standard and benchmark being taught. Students understand and retain knowledge best when they have applied it in a practical and relevant setting. At Casady, we understand that we must innovate to remain relevant. • Relationships between faculty and students are more important than ever at Casady School. Today, students need to feel connected and supported by the faculty in a way that says, “We know you can reach the goals we have set for you and we are here to help. We will not let you fail.” More than ever, students are motivated by success. As educators, it is our responsibility to reach out and invite
students to try new things without the fear of failure, to provide students an opportunity to engage deeply in topics that are of interest to them and to be both a facilitator and cheerleader along the educational path. The faculty at Casady understand the need to know and support the whole child. We embrace and encourage well-rounded students who can achieve success in many different pursuits as they discover more about the world around them and more about themselves. Establishing a philosophical framework for the vision and direction of the Upper Division at Casady School is an important task, and I can almost hear people asking, “So where do we go from here? What should Casady look like in the 21st century?”
Collaboration We are focusing on collaboration both in the classroom and as we model behavior for the students. Faculty are ready to bring open source and online resources into the classroom, try innovative assessment techniques and conduct more group presentations. Social networking has become a powerful tool as Casady classrooms are transformed into creative learning environments. Gaming and simulations have drawn students into lessons like nothing before. We are actively moving away from “the sage on the stage,” as the new role of the faculty is that of a facilitator in an engaging learning environment. As we

Peter Huestis Director of Upper Division
become a more student-centered school and move away from a faculty-centered or a curriculum-driven environment we are exploring ways to better support students with varying abilities or interests. A focus of 20th century education was the memorization of discrete facts while progressive educational environments focus on what students can do and how they are affected after forgetting all the little facts available to them at a click of a mouse. Education of yesteryear was textbook driven and passive while today educators must employ fluid research and active learning techniques. Classrooms have become global. Discipline problems are lessened when students are engaged and enjoy mutual levels of respect with faculty only found amongst co-learners. Print is no longer the primary vehicle of learning and assessment as projects, performances, presentations and multiple forms of media flood 21st century students’ worlds. This article touches on several key areas but is not exhaustive in its scope despite the conclusion that change, or enhancements, are necessary. Any change can be difficult for individuals and organizations. Schools in particular are environments often slow to change. An article by Andy Hargreaves and Dennis Shirley in the November 2009 issue of Teachers College Record points out: “Our challenge (as educators) is to no longer live absorbed in the present and oblivious to our future. It is living as morally responsible adults who attend to the present through giving ourselves to the future within an inclusive and inspiring vision
and language of educational improvement that connects the learning of individuals to the lives of their communities and the future of their societies.” John Luke, CEO of global packaging giant MeadWestvaco, made an important point in 2009 by saying, “Change for the sake of change is an abdication of leadership.” Change must be thoughtful, research-based, and supported by the community to achieve the goals – or espouse the philosophy – of a school like Casady that must continue to meet the needs of today’s students as we prepare them for tomorrow’s world. Only the fluid nature of the global and digital world in which we now live would allow the future to be both a goal and a reality. We are prepared to turn uncertainty into confidence as we prepare students for the next stage of their lives in an environment that best suits their learning style. This is a significant challenge – one that we are up for in the Upper Division at Casady School – but worth every investment made as we do what we do in preparing students for success.

Building TOWARDs THE FUTURE
It was just a year ago that the Casady community gathered to ceremoniously break ground for a new Upper Division math facility and the expansion of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor. The excitement was palpable that October day as the culmination of several years of planning and the extraordinary generosity of so many Casady supporters began to take shape. This fall, all of those hopes and plans will come to fruition. The W. R. Johnston Math Building will be dedicated on Homecoming Weekend, Friday, Oct. 29th. The expansion of the Chapel has progressed as well, and construction should also be complete this fall. A dedication ceremony for the Chapel is being planned for early spring. The math building was completely funded with gifts to the Forward Focus capital campaign. The Chapel, on the other hand, is funded primarily by private benefactors and the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. Completion of both the Chapel and the math facility has been much anticipated as both are unique in their own rights. The W. R. Johnston Math Building represents a phenomenal step for Casady in terms of modern construction and the expansion of St. Edward’s Chapel truly honors the history and tradition at the heart of Casady School.
W. R. Johnston Math Building The math building represents many firsts for Casady. The project is our first foray into sustainable construction, and in fact, Casady was the first PreK-12 school in Oklahoma to apply for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its ‘green’ features. The Casady staff and students are learning new terms such as SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) for roofs, STC (Sound Transmission Class) for windows and insulation, SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio) and EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) for heating and air units. “Incorporating all of these factors are important for the math building to achieve its LEED certification level, which
16
could be as high as silver,” said Nathan Sheldon, Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer. “LEED, in and of itself, is hard to talk about because there are so many acronyms and intricacies that come into play, but the geothermal system, the recyclable materials and the recycling plan are the most tangible pieces of the project,” Mr. Sheldon said. “The roof has an SRI rating of 78 or better. All of the windows have an STC rating of 35, which is a rather strong sound barrier, and most materials for the building were purchased within a 500-mile radius so as to minimize our carbon footprint.” The geothermal heating and cooling system is perhaps the most energy-efficient aspect of the building, and a unique feature because it utilizes the Casady lake in a way that the School’s founding fathers never would have imagined. The lake as the backdrop for the groundbreaking last fall was quite significant, as there are now more than 3.2 miles of pipes at the deepest part of the lake as part of the new geothermal system. In fact, all future building projects, including the science and art building which is next on the agenda, will utilize this new geothermal heating and cooling system. Other unique features are evident in the restrooms. The stall walls are made out of a solid-surface material that incorporates recycled bottles and other plastic household containers. Recycling stations are permanent fixtures and provide for the disposal of glass, plastic and paper. These two stations are down one hallway, and student lockers extend down the other. Landscaping of the Johnston math building will include native grasses and plants that require little to no watering, which is consistent with LEED certification requirements. The math building houses six classrooms and will include all Upper Division math faculty offices. The commons area provides a comfortable work space for students to congregate and work. With the Wi-Fi access now available on campus, the students will have a common area to study and use their computers.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY With the construction of the new W.R. Johnston Math Building, expansion of St. Edward’s Chapel and the anticipated science and fine arts facility, Casady has embarked on a new system of heating and cooling called geothermal energy, which is in line with the LEED certification requirements for the math structure. Geothermal energy warms easily in the winter and cools in the summer. Without a water resource such as our lake, geothermal heating and cooling typically requires wells that must be drilled into the ground. These wells house a closed-loop system of coil that extends deep enough into the ground to transfer and absorb energy, which is then returned to the surface and into the structure. The math building alone would have required 32 wells at a depth of 400 feet to accommodate the heating and cooling units. Casady is unique because of our lake which allows us to use the lake in lieu of drilling wells. A topography of the lake identified areas deep enough to accommodate this system. During the summer over 3.2 miles of pipe, representing more than 50 sets of hoses, were submerged in the lake to be used by the new math building and Chapel renovation.
“The submerged loop in the lake is called a coil – it’s a geothermal coil that acts as a heat transfer, or energy collection – much like a heat pump works, but it uses the lake to exchange the energy and bring either cooler or warmer temperatures back into the building to provide for the compressors,” said Nathan Sheldon, Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer. “Our lake has enough capacity to provide heating and air for approximately 500 tons of cooling, which would be enough for the entire campus. As we continue to develop our campus, we plan to continue using the lake for our geothermal systems. The payback for going with geothermal will be several years sooner due to our ability to use the lake and avoid costly drilling of wells.” The looped coil, now submerged in the lake, needs enough area to transfer that energy. Four feet below the water’s surface, the temperature remains between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit making this one of the most efficient methods for heating and cooling. The average commercial roof top unit today has an energy efficiency ratio (EER) usually between 11 and 14 and our new geothermal lake loop system will run between 24 and 30 EERs depending on the size of each unit. As a result the School anticipates seeing a reduction in utility costs despite the addition of nearly 9,500 new square feet of building space on campus.

Greg Spender, energy programs manager for OG&E Energy Corp., awarded Associate Head of School and Chief Financial Officer Nathan Sheldon with a check for more than $5,000. Casady earned the rebate through OG&E’s incentive program, which rewards efficient energy management. The award was given for the new math building, which will utilize a geothermal system for heating and cooling. Cost savings are based on the estimated amount of energy Casady will reduce through use of this system, lowering the amount of energy required and eliminating the need for OG&E to add more power plants. The rebate is based on the kilowatt-hours saved by using units that are more energy efficient. Based on a 4,200-hour occupancy year Casady will reduce its KWH by just under 91,000 annually. This reduces the amount of energy Casady must buy to cool the math facility.
Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor The Chapel is one of the most focal points of the campus and a common spot that many alumni define as embodying the true spirit of our School. It is in line for completion toward the end of this year, and the dedication of the Chapel will take place in the early spring of 2011. A memorial service for former Headmaster Dr. Robert B. Woolsey is being planned for later in the spring. Expansion of the Chapel will complete the dream of Casady School’s founders who envisioned the east and west transepts. St. Edward’s Chapel was one of the first buildings constructed on the campus more than 60 years ago. Cram and Ferguson of Boston, Mass., (National Cathedral, Washington D.C.) was the architectural firm used for the original Chapel and is the lead firm for the expansion today. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward J. Konieczny, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese, has been heavily involved with the expansion project. Construction to the Chapel includes transepts on the east and west sides, a bell tower, red oak wooden doors on the south end plus other doors and a number of new stained glass windows in the transepts. One of the most significant features of the Chapel is the limestone. Many building projects that include limestone typically only use it for the veneer and then a cast stone is used for the areas that require the blocks cut and shaped. In keeping with the original intent and design of the Chapel structure as it was completed in 1949, the exterior of the east and west transepts and the bell tower is 100 percent limestone, including cut limestone around the archways and the windows, which will match the original Chapel building stone. The Indiana Limestone Co., one of the oldest and most well-known limestone companies in the United States, is providing the limestone for our project. Another interesting and unique element of the Chapel is the real bell system, which we believe is one of only three of its kind in Oklahoma City. This bell system, from Petit and

Fritsen Bell Co. in Holland, has 23 cast bronze bells that were assembled in the United States and delivered to campus during the summer. The bells were lifted into place inside the new bell tower on the west transept in early July. The bell tower has now been completed and is visible, above the trees, from Pennsylvania Ave. just south of Britton Rd. and from across the lake within the Casady campus. The organ has been refurbished with new pipes where necessary and the electronics have been updated. It will be installed after the first of the year. The vestry, sacristy and offices will be in the west transept, and the east transept includes space for the new home of the Upper Division choral groups. Many of the stained glass windows in the transepts have been funded by private donors, but there are a few opportunities left. The Judson Studios of Los Angeles, the firm that built the original stained glass windows in the Chapel, is building the new windows which will take some time to complete and install. Leaded glass will fill the window spaces until the custom stained glass windows are finished. Bishop Konieczny, Mr. Sheldon, Mr. Bright and other key School leaders have worked with The Judson Studios to discuss and plan the themes and designs for the new windows.
“The theme in these new windows continue to center on our Judeo Christian roots that embody the original vision for the School’s spiritual program set forth by our founding fathers,” said Bishop Konieczny. These two important building projects represent the history as well as the future at Casady School – two seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum that contains the rich essence of the Casady experience. It’s fitting, though, that these are the first two projects to be completed in the new decade. They are both representative of the new direction and vision being driven by the Head of School and Board of Trustees – progress and innovation, always with an eye toward the traditions that have made this School great.

Hands - On Learning Enhances Lower Division
Integrated Curriculum Connects Students to Lessons in Lower Division Elements of integrated curriculum have been in place at Casady for many years, and with our focus on 21st century educational models, the administration and division directors continue to look for innovative ways to increase opportunities for integration. With an integrated curriculum, students have hands-on opportunities to participate in their lessons while crossing subject matter lines. This philosophy enhances education because it allows students to incorporate personal experiences and use multiple senses to actively engage in their learning. “The most powerful learning experiences our students have are when they realize that there is a purpose to the work they do,” said Head of School Christopher C. Bright. “A key way to create that purpose is to bring subjects together for thinking across disciplines – art and science, English and algebra, Spanish and social studies – and to construct frameworks that include essential questions like ‘how should one live?’ This encourages creative and real-world thinking.” In Casady’s Lower Division, teachers work as a team to create a curriculum that builds from one year to the next. They also introduce a specific topic in several classes to give students a holistic viewpoint of the subject at hand. Students frequently create art and other projects and conduct performances that correlate to their academic studies. Third-grade students, for example, study Greek mythology in social studies. To enhance their understanding, Fine Arts Director and Lower Division Art Teacher Sue Scott has them create their own Greek god or goddess sculptures in art class, which enables the children to take the information from
20
their studies and incorporate it into their artwork. Furthering their Greek mythology focus, third graders also have a math Olympics and science Olympics. During this course of study, Daniela Rodriguez-Chavez created a sculpture that represented her interest in reading. Her “Goddess of Animals and Learning” held a book in her hand, much like the Statue of Liberty holds a tablet. Daniela enjoys the well-rounded experience because it helps her focus on the lesson at hand and truly understand the meaning of the assignment, she said.
Integrated Learning Teaches Critical Thinking and Other Skills Research demonstrates that integrated learning goes well beyond the basics of an education. Through this approach, students become better thinkers, develop higher order skills and deepen their motivation to learn. “Students invest emotionally in arts-integrated classrooms because the curriculum connects the lessons to their own experiences,” said Lower Division Director Anne France. “This raises their emotional connection to what they learn and builds a community of learners.” Perhaps one of the most important traditions in the Lower Division is “Celebrate America.” In fourth grade, students learn to appreciate and understand how the nation developed by studying American history beginning with the Revolutionary War. Each student chooses a famous American to research and study through social studies, language arts and fine arts classes. The students each present a written report and a trifold display to demonstrate what they’ve learned. Each student also dons a costume and gives a five-minute speech during
the fourth grade’s theatrical presentation, which also includes historical American folksongs and dances. The students host a reception for their parents in the “museum” that showcases their displays. “I think it’s cool that we have the same subject in each class,” said Milley VanSant, who portrayed Nellie Bly – a journalist who took a record-breaking 72-day trip around the world and drafted an exposé about mental institutions. “[An integrated curriculum] focuses on one main subject and helps you realize that there are all these sections that can go with it.” Milley’s display of her research included a monkey, which represented Ms. Bly’s pet, a notepad, typewriter and a hot air balloon. Similarly, second-grade students enjoy “89er Day” every year. This event is the culmination of studies of Oklahoma history and includes a musical performance. The day ends with a land run in which students grab a piece of land on the campus and share a picnic lunch with their families. “It was precious – my eyes were watering,” said Kristine Bates, mother of Cooper. “Cooper was more into [the study of Oklahoma] because they’re interacting with it. They absorb so much more when they’re doing hands-on learning.” By employing an integrated curriculum, Casady helps all students with different learning styles absorb and expand their experience. Students and parents alike appreciate the teachers’ collaboration and the impact the program has on the children.

FAMILIAR FACES IN ADMINISTRATION
Jen Warden Dean of Student Life Jen Warden has joined Casady full time as the Dean of Student Life, and she will continue to coach Upper Division Girls’ Basketball. In her new role, Mrs. Warden will manage oversight of student activities and Middle Division athletics. She will also assist in the College Counseling department. A native Coloradan, Mrs. Warden was formerly the women’s basketball head coach at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. Prior to that position, she was head coach at Boise State University from 2002 through 2005. Her coaching philosophy, which she developed under the tutelage of renowned coach Ceal Barry, is to encourage students to find their passions and to understand the importance of teamwork. Every person must find a place to be successful or, as she calls it, discover their “great thing.” Jen and her husband, Larry, have two children at Casady this year, Brock in second grade and Brice in third grade.
Steve Shelley ’73 Athletic Director Named as Athletic Director to oversee Casady’s full athletics program from Primary to Upper Division, Steve Shelley returns to the Casady campus after a brief hiatus. Mr. Shelley has had a long relationship with Casady, first as a student and then as a professional in the business office as well as

Laura Lang, CFRE Director of Institutional Advancement With 14 years experience in the nonprofit sector, Laura Lang leads the School’s advancement team, which includes annual and planned giving and all related development activities, alumni relations and marketing. Laura came to Casady from the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), where she was the Senior Director of Development. Laura had been at OMRF for three years, first as Director of Development and Planned Giving. Last year,
the OMRF development team secured $1.8 million in donations for the organization. During her tenure, she also oversaw the conceptualization and implementation of a new, comprehensive e-marketing and online fundraising program, which resulted in a 19 percent increase in online gifts. She attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism/professional writing from the University of Oklahoma. She attained her Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential in 2008. Laura and her husband, George, have a son, Sam, who is in kindergarten at Casady this year.
Jane Sharp Director of Primary Division Casady found quite a gem in parent Jane Sharp, who moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 from Memphis, Tenn., with her husband, Tim, and daughter, Emma, who is now a junior at Casady. Mrs. Sharp has a strong background in early childhood education and has stepped into the Primary Division role after Henrie Close retired in June. In Memphis, Mrs. Sharp served as the Head of the Preschool at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School, a preschool through eighth grade college preparatory institution, which was founded on the same principle as Casady: providing an excellent education while caring for the whole child. Prior to Grace-St. Luke’s, Mrs. Sharp taught in several school districts across the country, including Indiana, Kentucky, New York and Tennessee. She earned her master’s degree in education from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., and her bachelor’s of science from the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
Jim Bonfiglio Director of Extended Programs and Technology Integration Coordinator Now in his 30th year at Casady, Jim Bonfiglio has transitioned from Director of Athletics to Director of Extended Programs and Technology Integration Coordinator. In his new role, he oversees the after school programs and directs efforts to streamline the School’s website and databases. He also will continue to manage the Summer by the Lake Program. Mr. Bonfiglio earned his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma City University and recently earned a master’s degree from OCU in applied behavioral studies. His son, Nick, graduated from Casady in 2009, and his son Joe is in seventh grade.

Dr. Robert B. Woolsey December 19, 1917 – March 19, 2010 Headmaster Emeritus Dr. Robert B. Woolsey passed away on March 19 at the age of 92. A respected leader, scholar and gentleman, Dr. Woolsey spent 17 years as Headmaster of Casady School. During his tenure from 1963 to 1980, he ushered more than 970 students into Alumni status. He led the School with grace and dignity, establishing Casady as one of the leading independent schools in the nation. As witnessed by many, he exemplified the true definition of the Casady spirit. “Dr. Woolsey’s legacy will long be felt at Casady School,” said Head of School Christopher C. Bright. “His vision most certainly defined what continues to be important in educating the student, and it is without doubt that his dedication to and belief in children has created core values within our community today.” It was Dr. Woolsey’s wish that a memorial service be held in the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor. The ceremony will be scheduled in the spring.
Dear Members of the Casady Community,
Memorial gifts can be directed to the Robert B. Woolsey Endowed Chair at Casady School. 9500 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73120
Thank you for your tremendous outpouring of love and support at the time of Bob Woolsey’s death. We were touched by your many cards, letters, emails and donations to the School in his honor. Bob would have been so pleased with every thoughtful gesture. Bob retired from active service to Casady School 30 years ago, and yet, the memories you shared when you wrote made it seem like only yesterday that we were ice skating on the lake, eating hamburgers on privilege day, quoting Shakespeare in Mrs. Tuck’s class, igniting Bunsen burners in Mr. Marble’s lab and singing on the bus on the way to SPC. Bob was extremely proud of Casady School – the beautiful campus, the talented teachers, the hardworking students, the caring parents and the supportive Board of Trustees. Thank you all for helping to make his life’s work so fulfilling. We look forward to celebrating Bob’s life with you next spring in the Chapel – the heart and soul of the School that he loved so much. We hope you can be with us then. The Woolsey Family JoAnne, Kathy, Midge, Michael and Robert

Preserving History In 2003 the Casady Alumni Association was charged by the Head of School and the Board of Trustees to establish a School archive committee to collect and properly store all relevant historic papers, photos and ephemera. Since that time the Archive Committee, headed by David Sapper ’74 and Elizabeth Anthony ’96, has established and organized the archive and put out a call to the Casady community for any additional materials. A $500 infusion was initially given by the Alumni Association, and a $5,000 “Agency Capacity Grant” from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation was received in 2008. David and Elizabeth first met with the archival director of the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum and Stan Upchurch, Director of the Archive at the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, to learn about basic preservation and storage techniques, as well as the best software for creating databases. Elizabeth, along with Larry Bruce, Director of Information Technology at Casady, set up a computer, scanner and software for the Casady Archives. Archival storage boxes and files have been purchased, and David has been working to secure a home for the archives on campus. In the meantime, Richard Dulaney and his brother, the late Tom Dulaney, generously donated off-campus storage at their offices. The committee has discovered and relocated works of art that were not currently being displayed on the campus. Two 300-pound neoclassical marble busts found a new home in the Middle Division’s Latin classrooms, and with the help of Middle Division Art Teacher Michelle Dubiskas, a life-size (four-foot by two-foot) reproduction of the Rosetta Stone was hung last summer in the sixth grade pod. The Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions history curriculums include the study of the Rosetta Stone. With the help of D’Arline McCubbin and The Rev. John H. Marlin a fine and decorative art inventory database, complete with photographs and descriptions, has also been compiled. As a part of the opening and celebration of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor in the spring of 2011, Marilyn Meade ’56, Alumni Director Emerita, has been gathering and organizing historical photos. Periodically, the Archive Committee will change the photos to represent other decades in the School’s history. Complete collections of yearbooks are on display in Crabtree and Cochran libraries and in the Head of School and alumni offices. The committee intends to complete two more sets, one for the Casady Admission Office and one for the Diocesan Center’s archive.

From the Chairman of the Board As someone whose own days as a student at Casady do not feel so far away, I am humbled by the opportunity to present my first Chairman’s Report. In doing so, I am grateful for this honor bestowed upon me, mindful of the responsibilities attendant to this position but comforted by the leadership of Head of School Christopher C. Bright, his administrative team and the amazing faculty and staff, who day in and day out give their very best for our students. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank E. Carey Joullian IV ’78, for his tireless service to Casady as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the last five years. Carey’s leadership helped the School maneuver through some difficult times, evolve to address fundamental changes in secondary school education and reach an upward inflection point where a long and bright future lies ahead. We are all thankful for Carey’s generosity and guidance, and we will work hard to continue his efforts. In keeping with his commitment to the School, Carey has agreed to continue serving as Past Chairman, a source of knowledge that will certainly be tapped frequently. In 1950, shortly before the completion of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor, founding member of the Board of Trustees Judge A.D. Cochran commented to Headmaster Michael Martin that: “When we look back 10 or 20 years hence, this will all look like a very modest start....and in the years to come when the campus is dotted with splendid buildings and is teeming with young people, what a memorial it will be for our beloved Bishop Casady for whom it has been so fittingly named.” At that time, the School’s founders had a dream for the Chapel to have an east and west transept and a bell tower. While it has taken 60 years, the founders’ dream for St. Edward’s Chapel will soon be realized. Through the hard work of The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward J. Konieczny, the vision and support of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and the generous gifts of a key donor, the physical and spiritual center of the School will be transformed from a mere splendid building to an architectural wonder. And shortly, the belfry of St. Edward’s bell tower will ring with its carillon bell system like no other bells in the state. Sixty years later, what a sight Casady would be for Judge Cochran and the other founding trustees. St. Edward’s is not the only physical change recently occurring on campus. Through the gifts of several generous benefactors in the Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign, the new math facility will provide a state-of-the-art environment for our faculty and students. Garrett Zwahlen ’10 explained the importance of this facility in his speech at the groundbreaking in the fall of 2009, saying we face “many problems in the 21st century...some small, some global, some known, some unknown, and math plays a key role in teaching the minds of tomorrow to solve these problems.” He added “the student body of Casady School wants to thank all of those
who have contributed in any way to making this new building happen.” When completed, the Casady math building will be a benchmark for all academic facilities in the state. These recent capital improvements should not overshadow the Casady Community’s continued support of the School through the Annual Fund. On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to report that despite the economically stressful times we face as a nation, Casady exceeded its $750,000 Annual Fund fundraising goal for the fifth consecutive year. Because tuition income only covers 80 percent of the true cost of an education at Casady, the Annual Fund supports the School’s operating needs by subsidizing tuition income. During the 2009-10 Annual Fund, Casady’s dedicated faculty and staff, parents, alumni, students and friends demonstrated their commitment to the School by contributing $775,613. It is especially important that the Board recognize our wonderful faculty and staff who set a record with 100 percent participation in this Annual Fund. It is our faculty and staff and their incredible dedication to Casady that make our School what it is today. In addition to several new faces on campus there are two new members to the Casady Advancement Team I wanted to mention in the context of this report. On July 1, Laura Lang joined the School as Director of Institutional Advancement and leads the team responsible for annual fund, planned giving and all related development activities as well as alumni relations and marketing. Laura has 14 years of experience in the non-profit sector, most recently with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Joining Laura is Heidi Cohn as Director of Annual Giving. Heidi has been involved with countless community projects and brings a strong background in marketing to this important position. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I welcome Laura and Heidi and look forward to working with them. In closing, I am pleased to report that the School is on sound footing and moving toward an even brighter future. As Casady continues to move toward this new horizon, we will be well served to remember the late former Headmaster Robert Woolsey’s charge, when he said “to whom much is given, much is expected in return.” So, whether it is a faculty member spending extra time to help a student understand a difficult concept, a parent volunteering on campus, an athlete on the field digging deeper for a victory or learning from a defeat, the board and administration making tough choices to ensure the School continues to thrive in the right direction, or a student helping a classmate as they both learn how to succeed, it is the strong partnership between the Casady community and the School and the shared commitment to understanding what is best for our students that makes Casady great. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your continued support and your investment in the future and living legacy of Casady School. Best Regards,
Eric S. Fisher ’84 Chairman of the Board

From the Director of Institutional Advancement Though Casady School is most recognized for its long history of academic excellence, the rich tradition of giving has also been a thread woven deeply into the fabric of the School community. From the very beginning in 1947, with the gift of land for its campus, philanthropy has shaped and transformed Casady and its students in countless ways. As someone who’s new to the Casady community, I feel so fortunate to arrive at this School at a time when the foundation for giving is so strong and well built through decades of dedication by many groups. Parents, alumni, staff, volunteers and even students have all worked countless hours and have given selflessly to build and sustain Casady as the city’s premier educational institution. Casady’s Board of Trustees has always provided active leadership in fundraising and sets an important example each year with every single member making a gift to the Annual Fund. Significantly, Casady’s faculty and staff also reached 100 percent participation in the Annual Fund for the first time in history last year.
The Annual Fund at Casady rivals most others in the area in terms of leadership, structure and dollars raised. Our School relies upon these funds to operate each year and to continue to provide the level of excellence that has become synonymous with Casady. The Casady Parents’ Organization enthusiastically raises funds for a variety of important School projects and programs each year, and provides numerous opportunities for parents to get involved and volunteer to help our School. The completion of the Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression is a testament to the dedication of volunteer leadership and the passion of many donors for the continued growth of the School and success of our students. The Casady Community’s continued success in raising funds to support the School even during times of change and uncertainty puts us in the very fortunate position to be poised for even greater opportunities to advance our School in the coming year. With new Board leadership, a new Advancement team and the continuing vision and guidance of our Head of School, the possibilities seem endless for harnessing the passion and generosity of those who hold a deep belief in the mission of Casady School. Sincerely,
Laura Lang Director of Institutional Advancement

From the Alumni Association The 2010-11 school year will be a year of change for the Casady Alumni Association. While change often results from a need for improvement, our change is actually the result of an incredible accomplishment. Four years ago, the Alumni Association made an ambitious pledge of $150,000 to the School’s Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign. An anonymous donor agreed to match this gift 3:1 when the association fulfilled the pledge. On June 30 of this year, the Alumni Association made its final $30,000 payment and has now fulfilled its $150,000 commitment. When combined with the anonymous match, this gift has grown the Casady endowment by $600,000. This is an incredible accomplishment for our organization, especially given that we literally raised this money one piece of Estate Sale furniture and one golf foursome at a time. With the Forward Focus scholarship endowment gift behind us, we must determine where the Alumni Association should now focus its efforts. One of our central missions is to keep alumni connected to Casady, whether they live in Oklahoma City or elsewhere. To this end, an official Casady Alumni Facebook page (the work of Alumni Association board member August Hadwiger and Alumni Director Betty Jane Garrett) has been created and has more than 600 friends. In addition to providing information relating to Casady news and events, this page provides a medium for alumni to reconnect. You can access it by visiting: www.facebook. com/casadyschoolalumni. Also, the alumni office distributes Connections, an email newsletter with events and subjects

The Young Alumni Committee hosted successful events last year at the 51st Street Speakeasy in December and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art rooftop in May. That committee will stage more gatherings this year as it works to bridge the time gap between being a Casady student and a Casady parent. Alumni of all ages living in or visiting Oklahoma City will find plenty of ways to connect with the School and other alumni during Homecoming Weekend Oct. 28-29. The association will not have an Estate Sale during this school year. The Estate Sale was a successful event for our group and the School, and proceeds from past sales helped to fulfill our pledge to the capital campaign. The small group of alumni who organized and managed the event felt a strong bond with each other and with Casady. However, the Estate Sale also had its shortcomings. It represented a tremendous amount of work for a small group of volunteers and did not significantly further our association’s mission of growing a connection between all alumni and the School. The association board has decided to direct efforts toward new events that would involve a broader group of alumni. Look for announcements about these new and exciting alumni events. The Casady Golf Tournament did prove to be a success this year and will continue. Sponsored by the Alumni Association and led by alumni board members, this event has served as our secondary fundraiser. The Alumni Association will continue to assist the school with financial development. This is something that we both need and want to do for the School. Casady is fortunate to have many generous donors and has proven its ability to raise the necessary funds for its annual budget and specific projects. However, Casady’s alumni participation in the Annual Fund for 2009-10 was a low 15 percent. Large donors and foundations consider alumni participation in annual giving when deciding whether and how much to contribute to Casady. Many alumni do not realize that making a small annual fund gift may be the most beneficial thing they can do for the School. Participation matters! This year marks a great transition for the Alumni Association. Now that we have reached a significant goal and have increased the School’s endowment by $600,000, we will turn to new ways to help Casady and its alumni move forward together. Be a part of the Alumni Association’s efforts this year. Attend one of our events. Check in with other alumni online. Give to the annual fund. We hope to see your connection with Casady grow during this school year. Sincerely,
David J. Morgan ’96 Alumni Association President

From the Casady Parents’ Organization Because of gracious and generous donations of time and talent, the Casady Parents’ Organization gifted in excess of $150,000 to Casady School this past year. This donation funds projects and specific needs designated by the School working in conjunction with the CPO. The 2009-10 school year kicked off with the annual Back to School Picnic. Hospitality Co-chairs Carol Johnson and Kathryn Wilson chaired the event and, along with help from the Gales, coordinated volunteers to welcome new families to the Casady community. In November, Theresa Bozalis and Angela Reynolds chaired the Faculty Studies Dinner, a biannual event to raise funds for professional development. The theme was “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” The work of their committee, Kevin Pleshko’s creative entertainment as emcee, and Geni Thomas-Woodward’s great dinner made for a very successful and fun evening. Bingo Night, always popular with Primary and Lower Division families, was held in January. Kristen Bohanon and Denise Parsons did a wonderful job chairing this always noisy, fun event. Along with pizza and prizes, a mini-auction was held with fabulous themed gift baskets donated from each
Primary and Lower Division class. Thanks to everyone for raising funds and fun! We were very fortunate to have Casady alumna Molly Wizenberg ’97 on campus in February for a book signing and presentation. Thank you, Jana Bright and Susan Eckman, for inviting Molly to return to our campus AND for chairing the return of the Casady Book Fair. The community, as well as those of us at Casady, welcomed back this great tradition. The annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast was also held in February. With Ban and Yen Nguyen providing a tasty breakfast and Casey Williams coordinating the event, it was a great start to a sleepy morning back from mid-winter break, and one we look forward to in 2011. It was a banner year for the Casady Cupboard. Kudos to Tonya Bell, Cupboard chair, for her tireless effort in managing this on-campus spot to pick up a t-shirt or an after-school snack. Concessions Chair Bob Griffiths kept the popcorn popping and the drinks cold during sporting events and provided a great service to students, parents and visitors to our campus. Concessions and the Casady Cupboard are open throughout the year and contribute annually to the total funds raised by the CPO. Thanks to all parents, volunteers and the 2009-10 CPO Board for another remarkable year. Looking forward, Lee Ann Nordin is serving as president in 2010-11 and Kristen Bohanon and Libby Naifeh are planning the Cirque du Cyclone Light the Night auction to be held in November. You won’t want to miss it! We hope you will join us in our continued support of Casady School! Sincerely,
Janet Jones CPO President 2009-10

Casady’s Annual Fund: Participation Matters!
The Annual Fund is the largest annual fundraiser for Casady School. Each year the Annual Fund raises more than three quarters of a million dollars and harnesses the energy and dedication of dozens of volunteers who want the best for our students. Philanthropy is a longstanding tradition at Casady, and the Annual Fund ensures that everyone who cares about the School can participate at some level. While millions of dollars are needed to build new buildings during capital campaigns, gifts at all levels are important to make the Annual Fund successful. The real key to the Annual Fund is participation – not the amount of each gift. This campaign relies on the fact that every single person who has a vested interest in the success of our School believes in our collective responsibility to participate together to ensure that it remains strong. Tuition pays for only about 80 percent of the cost of educating a student at Casady, and the Annual Fund is an important way that funds are raised to underwrite the additional costs. In fact, the Annual Fund is a line item in the School’s budget – these funds must be raised to offset the actual expenses of operating the School for the year. The good news is that Casady has met or exceeded its Annual Fund goal for the past five years. Donors to the Annual Fund have given more than $4 million over the past five years. Based on the success of these prior campaigns and the new plans being set in place by new staff and leadership, we are confident our Annual Fund campaign can grow to more than $1 million annually over the next few years. Join us in making this bold vision a reality, and help us bring the educational programs available to students at Casady to a whole new level.

Casady has produced the most Presidential Scholars of all independent schools in Oklahoma. Since 1964, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars appointed by the President, annually selects scholars based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Garrett Zwahlen ‘10 joined a distinguished group of Casady graduates when he was named a Presidential Scholar in the spring of 2010. Casady graduates who have held this distinction are K. Michele Walters ‘84, Kermit L. Alexander ‘83 and Lee Ann Wise ‘76.
