R
ed, yellow, pink, orange ... all colors that everyone should have in own home. They are not only used to give a warm touch to the house but to make it more welcoming and pleasant. A right furniture helps us to feel good inside: more relaxed and free. Like our wardrobes, even the houses need to be rejuvenated and renewed with some living pieces - for this you find our new selection of design trends of the bright colours. Instead, those who aren't keen on strong colors, in the latest news section, can find some "more traditional" new pieces. If this is not enough, I suggest you visit the international design fair in New York - ICFF. This is a boutique furniture event for decorators, designers and all passionate people by design. In this edition you find the main information of the exhibition and a selection of some new pieces that you will find directly at the fair. I've also provided with a city guide: from luxury hotels to nice restaurants and great places to visit there. As cherry on top I reserved you the first project in NYC by Zaha Hadid Architects that highlights perfectly how with just one right object you can make a room more pretty. Afterwards you can get some ideas from a series of projects that involved the creation of materials such as stone, wood and marble with the aim to bring people and nature closer together.

O
ver the past four editions ICFF has transformed itself from a boutique contemporary furniture event for local decorators, designers and students into the International design platform for North America. While ICFF will be celebrating its 30th year when it takes place May 20-23, 2018, the Fair is a far cry from what you may have experienced just 4 or 5 years ago. Long a collection of 150 or so local and U.S. based smaller producers of contemporary furniture and lighting, ICFF has morphed into a +900 exhibitor Fair encompassing 180,000’ of space and taking over the entire first level of Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The Fair’s 36,000 attendees are architects, interior designers, developers and luxury retailers from 50 states and 25 countries.
40 | G&G _ Magazine
ICFF is only about original design, curated to present what’s best and what’s next from all over the world with a majority of exhibitors coming from outside of the United States. We sat down with ICFF’s show director Kevin O’Keefe to learn more about how ICFF has evolved over the past 30 years and what to expect at this year’s edition.
Did ICFF attendance change? ICFF: Because we added literally hundreds of new exhibitors and thousands of new products at every edition over the last four shows, the ICFF attendance has really grown and changed. Every year, we experienced double digit attendance growth and the audience morphed from local decorators, designers and students to senior architects, interior designers, the largest and most important developers and the top luxury and boutique retailers from all over the globe. The exhibitors saw tremendous success and came back every year even bigger and with more new product launches. Why did ICFF change? ICFF: The Fair was clearly drifting for many years and other events began to spring up taking advantage of a fully recovered luxury design market in the U.S. so we decided to grow ICFF from a small, local boutique feature to a major global design platform. How is that accomplished? ICFF: A new team visited the top global design events in the world and invited the best and brightest exhibitors to join us in NY. With the U.S. luxury design market rebounding, companies wanted to be a part of the growth in North America. Country governments were encouraged to help their companies tap into the U.S. market and many took up our offer and came on board. 42 | G&G _ Magazine
Did ICFF add any special features? ICFF: Every year we added major new features from on floor rapid prototyping of art objects by top designers to showcasing emerging designers from 10 countries and also introduced a Gallery section. How does NYCxDESIGN fit into this? ICFF: In 2013, the event was introduced by New York City around ICFF as the anchor event. In 2014, ICFF decided to fully engage and support NYCxDESIGN with the goal of positioning NYC as the global design capital. The five boroughs are home to +50,000 designers, and the top 50 architectural design firms in the world- colossally more than any other US or European city. In 2016, we introduced the NYCxDESIGN Awards with Interior Design Magazine, recognizing design excellence across all design disciplines. The Awards and Party are now a major “must attend production held this year at an amazing new venue- Pier 17 in the Seaport District. NYCxDESIGN, anchored by ICFF has grown to over 500 events and 250,000 participants.
An ICFF Silent Auction- how did that come about? When IIDA asked ICFF to host the Education Fund Award, we learned that this program was created to honor the memory of Anna Hernandez, a visionary textile designer who succumbed to Alzheimers at the age of 56. ICFF wanted to create a major industry “give back” to support the great work being done to defeat Alzheimers- a worldwide epidemic touching the lives of all. All 900 ICFF exhibitors will have the chance to donate pieces to be auctioned off at the Fair with the proceeds directly benefiting the Education Fund and The Alzheimer’s Association. We know our industry will step up as will all the supporting media… it’s a great cause and we are thrilled to be a part of it.

NoMad NoMad New York is housed in a turn of the century Beaux-Arts building that has been fully restored to its original grandeur with interiors by French designer Jacques Garcia. The 168 rooms are residential in feel and decorated in his classic, timeless style. Each room is appointed with hand-selected, richly textured custom-designed furnishings and original artwork. The soaring ceilings throughout the public spaces provide a fine gathering place to enjoy dining, drinking and socializing. 1170 Broadway & 28th Street, New York, NY - 10001 Book at www.thenomadhotel.com
Boro Hotel Designed by Grzywinski + Pons, the hotel’s 108 guestrooms, studios and public spaces offer a fresh perspective by blending modern, minimalist interiors with the structure’s original concrete and cinderblock bones. Thoughtful touches infuse warmth into the space to create an inviting environment, including hand scraped oak floors, painted pallet wood paneling, and design elements that incorporate leather, cork and sisal materials. While none of the 108 guestrooms are exactly alike, many boast spacious terraces and balconies, while all include high floor to ceiling windows showcasing panoramic views, custom-designed furniture and unique light fixtures. 38-28 27th Street, Long Island City, NY – 11101 Book at www.borohotel.com

Roxy Hotel The Roxy Hotel lives in a triangular, red brick building that favors clean classic lines with bold punctuations of color. Its signature cast-iron detailing was inspired by the industrial materials that appear throughout Tribeca, and the glowing, Art Deco-style marquee evokes the city’s love affair with entertainment. Out front, the iconic, castiron clock is a nod to the towering, turn-of-the-century timepieces sprinkled throughout New York. Inside, the feeling is tranquil with glimmers of Regency and Art Deco. The 10,000-square- foot central atrium offers a dramatic vaulted core reminiscent of grand cathedrals and Hitchcockian mid-20th century buildings like the old Penn Station or the Singer Building. 26th Avenue, New York, NY - 10013 Book at www.roxyhotelnyc.com

Gramercy Park Hotel Gramercy Park Hotel, a luxury bohemian enclave, is one of the iconic, legendary venues whose stories almost literally reverberate through the wooden beams of the soaring Julian Schnabel designed lobby. New York is in constant motion and ever changing, and while new hotels spring up almost daily, few have the substance and character to be labeled an original. Throughout nearly half a century of off the wall rock & roll ragers happening amidst a sublimely curated art collection that is featured throughout every inch of the building, Gramercy Park Hotel remains a fixture for those with an independent spirit, as well as those seeking a quiet, elegantly baroque refuge in bustling Manhattan. 2 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY - 10010 Book at www.GramercyParkHotel.com.

Blanca Hidden within Roberta’s Garden is Blanca, the 13-seat “temple of gastronomy” features an extended tasting experience. Described as “dazzling” and an “epic food adventure,” Blanca received its second Michelin star in 2015 alongside a threestar review from critic Pete Wells of The New York Times. Clear views of the exhibition kitchen anchor Blanca’s simplistic design, reflecting the chef’s purist intentions with exposed rafters, stark white walls, and subtle pops of greenery. After checking in at Roberta’s host stand next door, diners sit at the porcelain chef’s counter in re-upholstered bucket seats sourced from vintage Corvettes—a callout to the space’s former use as an auto body shop, as well as Chef’s proclivity for racing cars and motorcycles. 261 Moore St, Brooklyn, NY - 11206 www.blancanyc.com

NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804 as New York's oldest museum. Its eleven founders all lived through the turbulent years of the American Revolution and the British occupation of New York. These men believed that New York’s citizens needed to take decisive action to preserve eyewitness evidence of their own historical moment, which they recognized as important, fearing “dust and obscurity” would be the inevitable fate of accounts and artifacts if left in the hands of private individuals. “Without the aid of original records and authentic documents,” they declared, “history will be nothing more than a well-combined series of ingenious conjectures and amusing fables.” Hours: T - Th 10am - 6pm; F 10am - 8pm; Sn 11am - 5pm 170 Central Park West at Richard Gilder Way (77th Street), New York, NY 10024 Visit: www.nyhistory.org 70 | G&G _ Magazine

TENEMENT MUSEUM
The museum tells the stories of immigrants who started their lives anew on Manhattan's Lower East Side between the 19th and 21st centuries through the recreated apartment and businesses of real families in our two historic tenement buildings. The tenements housed over 15,000 working class immigrants from over 20 nations while they served as residences. They faced challenges: making a new life and working for a better future. In recognizing the importance of this seemingly ordinary building, the Tenement Museum has re-imagined the role that museums can play in our lives. 103 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002 Buy tickets at: tenement.org
PHOTOGRAPHERS HUFTON+CROW HAVE DOCUMENTED 520 WEST 28TH, ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS’ FIRST PROJECT IN NEW YORK CITY.
74 | G&G _ Magazine
There is a powerful urban dynamic between the streets of New York and the High Line, a layered civic realm that has developed over generations and in many iterations. 520 West 28th conveys this contextual relationship, applying new ideas and concepts to create the latest evolution of the site’s rich history. Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects Design: Zaha Hadid, Patrik Schumacher Photography: Hufton + Crow, Scott Frances
The split levels of the design define varied living spaces and echo the multiple layers of civic space on 28th Street and the High Line. These split levels are expressed within the interlocking chevrons of 520 West 28th’s hand-crafted steel façade which carries the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past; its detailed workmanship continues the venerable tradition within New York’s historic architecture of enhancing the public realm.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE of Kelly Hoppen MBE Kelly Hoppen MBE’s latest 9000 square foot home in London is a homage to her talent as one of the most celebrated interior designers of our time. This stunning property boasts very rare extremist architecture as well as six bedrooms, bathrooms and walk- in- wardrobes, a study, a gym, a laundry and flower room, a large open-plan high ceiling living/dining/kitchen space, along with a breakfast area and underground parking. Having taken one year and three months to complete, Kelly Hoppen designed her new home in her signature style using her neutral, calm colour palette of taupe, whites, beiges and greys, complimented by beautiful pops of green, dusty pink, peacock blue, orange, bronze, nickel and rose gold. The designer’s love for texture is also obvious, enriching and adding a new dimension to the space. Design: Kelly Hoppen MBE Photography: Mel Yates

The bespoke light in the entrance hall was designed by Herve Langlais for Galerie Negropontes. It is a great addition to the entrance and draws beautiful vertical lines that emphasize the height of the ceiling. This is complimented by the large vertical shutters, oriental runner cupboard, panel in specialist plaster and the lines in the sleek marble floor, that all reinforce the famous grid that Kelly designs with. The soft curves of the metal around the delicate round paper shades create the perfect balance. The area is tastefully accessorised and decorated with flowers and black and white photographs. The round mirror was found at Les Puces flea market in Paris. It was originally found in a train station in Eastern Europe, on the side of the railway. A striking image of Marilyn Monroe by Gene Korman hangs in the entrance hall as well as the imposing photo of Mohamed Ali by Flip Schulke. These are part of the designer’s art collection that she have been gathering over the years. Hoppen used up-lighting for the sleek stairs that lead you to the main open- plan living area, adding to the elegance of the space. The long marble ledge that starts from the entrance steps, runs against the wall all the way to the study located on the other side of the living area. This creates a continuity within the space and is a stunning architectural feature. Hoppen also uses this to display pieces she has collected during her travels, her home jewellery and artwork, which is easily interchangeable depending on her mood and the season.
The bespoke lighting has the capability to dramatically and softly light up the room, suiting all moods and ambiances. The stunning bubble lights above the seating area are designed by Kelly and stand in stark contrast to the straight lines of the lights above the dining table, yet they do not clash. The glass bubbles are almost floating and add to the balance of the main space. 84 | G&G _ Magazine
Kelly has seductively designed the living room with her love of hosting in mind. Great wooden panels were added to the impressive pre-existing columns framing the room. These add monumentality to the space, creating a grid from above and across the room. The pendant lights above the seating area and dining table were lowered to balance out the space. Indeed, balance was extremely important to bear in mind when designing this area of the house due to its vastness and open-plan nature. Naturally lit during the day, the dining room overlooks the living room and kitchen. Often used for special occasions and evening meals, the dining area is full of character. A large bespoke Kelly Hoppen pendant light, that took 6 months to produce, elegantly hangs over the beautiful 6 metres stone dining table.
The chaise longue, designed by Kelly for her e-commerce store adds to the relaxed ambiance of this lovely master bedroom as does the lovely Christian Liaigre bench in darker damask. 86 | G&G _ Magazine
The master bedroom, designed around everything Kelly dreams of is sensual, luxurious and breathtakingly beautiful. The delicate bedside lamps from Ochre are framed by clever ribbed panels that are part of the doors downstairs and cleverly add symmetry to the room. Texture is everything in this wonderful bedroom. Kelly’s fabulous walk in wardrobe houses her collection of vintage clothes collected over many years and is every girls dream and the designer’s sanctuary. The incredibly spacious dressing room houses all of Kelly’s stunning clothing and her many pairs of shoes! The space is decorated with large sensual black and white photography and a lovely photograph of Kelly herself by David Bailey.
The warm taupe vintage chairs are beautifully accompanied by two stools designed by India Mahdavi, which are used as side tables in this instance.
Kelly’s showstopper freestanding bathtub is her own design in collaboration with Australian bathware designer, apaiser. Made in reclaimed marble, this statement piece resembles the petals of a lotus flower and is inspired by a series of bowls that Hoppen designed for Wedgewood that, when stacked, created this incredible pattern and texture. Kelly has placed the bathtub on an elevated marble platform, lit up from underneath, for maximum impact. Concealed low- level floor lighting is an excellent way of washing the floor with light, creating an ambient effect. Niamh Barry was brought in to design this amazing loop chandelier for the master bedroom.
The light loops surrounding the bath and above make you feel like you floating in a very light cocoon.

Bringing nature into the home is very important to the designer, especially in a bathroom. It brings life into the bathroom and should always be viewed as part of the decorating palette as it creates an illusion of space.
Be stylish at work T.ZED Architects created a unique and versatile sales office for KOA - a new development firm that will challenge what has been perceived as ‘normal’ in the development industry for too long in Dubai.

The objective of the KOA Sales Office is to provide users and visitors a sense of what KOA’s projects will offer to its clientele. The design brief required a more relaxed approach to sales, as well as an opportunity to showcase the multitude of natural materials as well as proximity to nature and the landscape in KOA’s developments. A meeting room was required for more intimate conversations as well as presentations. As the space sits within an office building, the Sales Office unit has three glazed elevations that capture sunlight throughout the day. This has caused the architects to think of ways in which to control the amount of light entering into the space, as well as the overall spatial configuration of the project.
A meeting room was required for more intimate conversations as well as client presentations. The brief requested that visitors feel at home upon entering the sales office, and the use of a home-style functional pantry with a floating kitchen island is where plans are showcased as if circling around a dining table at home. Here, visitors are greeted by a long corridor with solid white oak paneled wall that displays the project’s early days of inception to one side, and the city-scape on another. With the original brief in mind about challenging the status-quo when it comes to real estate, the architects wanted to re-think the user experience. Rather than conventional meeting rooms, the architects have introduced an open lounge area whereby guests are introduced to the KOA projects in detail before they are welcomed at the pantry high counter to review plans. The entirety of the experience is one of a domestic, warm welcome. The lounge area offers two settings: indoor and outdoor. These areas are determined by the use of differing materials.
92 | G&G _ Magazine
The glazed meeting room – a testament to the transparency of the whole process – is where buyers can view videos on KOA’s developments. A marquee-effect ceiling dotted in warm incandescent bulbs choreographs the way into the heart of a nontypical sales office experience. Once in the nucleus, the space starts to play on a skewed perception of location by play on natural stones that define indoor and outdoor.
94 | G&G _ Magazine
The lighting strategy in the main sales area is that of subtlety, whereby a direct, functional source of light can hardly be identified. By use of natural American white oak panels on the ceiling, the architects were able to create coves by providing cut-outs as necessary. Finally, the timber ceiling offered a continuation of the wall paneling as well as the pantrycabinets, which then ultimately acted as the base material of the entirety of the space.
A Russian Apartment with Contemporary Touch A POSH CREATION BY EKATERINA LASHMANOVA BOCA DO LOBO DESIGN INSPIRATION BEHIND-THE-SCENES
Posh, Sharp, Glamourous – this is how we could describe the stylish and fresh interior design creation by Ekaterina Lashmanova, a residential apartment for a young family. The refined work of Ekaterina Lashmanova, through an attentive dedication to details, reaches its apogee within this contemporary project, flowing into an inspiring bold apartment in the imposing city of Moscow, Russia. Ekaterina had the free pass to open the doors of the place and spend some time bringing to life the most tasteful trends. She designed more than a house – she created an inspiring and iconic place to live in. From the high-ceiling to the details of the curtains, everything is custom made, conceived by artisans – a constant search of singularity and perfection. Behind the inspiration of the talented Russian interior designer is a profound admiration for the Portuguese Design – and Boca do Lobo has a main role, leading as pioneer of a product design made to brake boundaries through the aesthetic and bring handcrafted artistic pieces into people’s day-to-day life. The living room shape has grand ceilings and large windows which the designers used to their advantage. The classical accents with fresh color palette are highlighted by the Wave center table due to its gold hammered finish and contemporary lines. Taking center stage, the creation by Boca do Lobo brings an unexpected contemporary vibe to the room. Blue hues and sensuous creams pair perfectly with the graphic flooring and the subtle gold accents in the lighting that extends throughout the apartment. 96 | G&G _ Magazine
True classics never fail to make an impression and this is certainly the case for the Wave Table from Boca do Lobo. Nowadays, the traditional coffee table is no longer the only way to decorate the living room; recently coffee tables are taking original shapes and designs that give the living room a whole unique look through unusual forms and new materials. Wave is an original and a stylish coffee table for a modern living room as it is also an unconventional center table for your sitting room. With great style and elegance it creates an exclusive ambiance to the modern interiors. Developed by a Portuguese jewelry artisan, this piece is made of hand hammered gold brass with a black mirror top.

The project was created from the beginning by a Portuguese luxury company, Jetclass. From concept to the final result. The clients asked for a house that can be both: luxurious and functional. They wanted open plan living spaces as the dining and living room opening out onto a sun drenched outside. Spaces needed to be bright & sunny, warm and inviting in winter and shaded, cool and protected in the summer. The home had to be modern in style - materials, roof pitches and proportions, and in internal finishes. It is a functional family home that responds to the client's needs. When it comes to design, the main consideration was to keep it simple, classy and modern. The more exquisite finishes and sober colours were used to maintain the consistency of the project.

The aim was to create a family and cosy ambience never neglecting the glamorous and sophisticated way of living. For example, the soft colours used in the master bedroom were to create a graceful atmosphere and the soft yellow (a trend colour) and the mixing materials in the kitchen were to create a more modern and bold ambience. Every project is special for Jetclass as the team works side by side with the client. They work in order to create a home that is unique and that feels actually home to the clients. Any piece, any finishing, any touch is given to create the perfect atmosphere to the client live-in as they get to know the tastes, goals, needs, intents, way of living and thinking during the process. Hikari House is a residential project located in Bandung, Indonesia. In a house where people lives and grow, layout plays a significant part in the design of a residential house, which speaks about the connection and synergy between public, private and service areas.
Hikari House, which literally means “House of Light”, is designed to give users the experience of how natural lighting and time interact with architecture. The natural light that sips into the house will vary, not only by day, yet the light will constantly change following the movement of the sun towards the earth that changes throughout the year. In addition to natural lighting, air flow plays a role in this house. The flow is designed the way the house ‘breathes’ from the terrace and living area towards the dining and dry garden. Using the terrace house concept which creates a twist of the exterior and interior, made a different ambiance that blurs the boundaries of indoor and outdoor of Hikari House. Emphasizing the connection between outdoor and indoor, the pile that presents at the backyard is made at the same height with the eye level of the user that sits in the living room. This creates a stronger bond between outdoor and indoor elements. Then, the cactus garden that is seen from the dining room, creates a joinery of the outdoor to the indoor seamlessly. Furthermore, with the additional void space that exists besides the dining room, it makes the indoor space more spacious when the partition glass is opened. As interior design is a unity and is inseparable with the architecture itself, the interior of this house is stitched by the elements that can be seen throughout the building. Architectural approach, natural lighting, artificial lighting, furniture, decorative accents, up to the landscape that pleases, those are the elements that communicate and felt from the inside of the house.
The faรงade of this house is facing towards the west, with a solid look that gives the user privacy and prevents the interior from the afternoon sunlight glare.

The form and material of the house represent the idea of creating a house with low maintenance. Furthermore, the explicit usage of material such as exposed concrete, ulin wood, and steel bars used for the exterior, this house creates an impression of a modern tropical house. 112 | G&G _ Magazine

Set in a north-facing cove in Sydney’s vast natural harbour, the site borders a recreational park and a public pier which juts out into the bay. This element forms one axis for the site whilst a pristine beach, directly in front of the site, forms another.
From the principle park elevation that the new building appears as a collection of planes; a play on space, privacy and threshold. Graphite grey sail screens (made from “Kaynemaile,” a polycarbonate chainmail developed in New Zealand for the Lord of the Rings movies) are rigged just off the house providing privacy from the road. Timber cladding, plastered mass walls, a wood-clad soffit and the exaggerated sill of a bay window punched through the sail screens, are layered into further planes. This game creates depth in an otherwise linear façade and provides privacy whilst maximizing light and views to the park.
Set into this façade the stairwell is fully glazed; but wrapped protectively in a cloak of timber louvres. This gently curved outline contrasts with the surrounding crystalline box and mediates between the formal entrance and bedrooms above.
116 | G&G _ Magazine
Entry is at 90 degrees to the Bay, off the park. A ramp, edged by water, slopes gently up to the front door; the little rise adding to the sense of arrival. Here the “U shaped plan of the house becomes clear; the entrance is a link between two wings, separated by an internal garden which, like an internal harbour, allows views through the spaces to the bay beyond. Seen from the courtyard a massive blank wall of the upper storey seems to weigh on the glazed levity of the ground floor, amplifying the bay view beneath it. The bayside wing of the house is one open plan space. Stairs, rather than walls, delineate the raised kitchen and family dining from more formal areas. These stairs extend seawards into the garden forming a line of axis drawing the eye out to the view and providing privacy from the public road alongside. The garden is raised above the towpath to provide additional privacy from the beach and to dissolve the distinction between the garden and bay from within. This is emphasised in the pool whose orientation and extension towards the water makes a clear connection between the two.
Architects, SAOTA, displayed their South African signature in this design with its sharp lines, light forms and the lush integration of nature which all combine to make the design feel at home in this special site. A playful character, the calculated blurring of boundaries and the fresh, layered composition bring into balance the domestic needs of a young family and the wow factor that this phenomenal site deserves. SAOTA’s sister company, the interior studio ARRCC, developed a refined dÊcor palette to suit the home and complement the client’s artworks.

Materials were carefully chosen to site the house; the use of wood, white walls and travertine floors reflect the seaside setting. Off-shutter concrete is used as a playful accent which, like the rendered walls, appears almost soft and textured in contrast to crisp folds of screen and aluminium.
As architects in association, TKD worked closely with the client, ensuring that SAOTA’s detailed design was delivered and a dream home realized. Their creativity, perseverance and commitment to design excellence was a key success factor. Lighting design by Point Of View and landscaping by Wyer & Co. combined with the dedication of main contractor, Horizon, to deliver a quality home with an exceptionally high level of finish.

A HOUSE PERCHED ON A ROCKY OUTCROP OVERLOOKING THE CRICKET FIELDS OF MELVILLE PARK IN EPSOM BY STEVENS LAWSON ARCHITECTS
The adventurous clients, in their 70s and 80s, had an impulse to build one last house which they refer to as their ‘departure lounge’. They sought a home which was exciting yet comfortable and big enough to accommodate family and friends. It was a courageous endeavor on their behalf considering the difficult and inhospitable nature of the site, but they were up for the
challenge. As architects we were excited by this and explained that difficult sites made for interesting architecture. The site resembled a quarry more than a suburban plot with a monolithic volcanic outcrop at its core. This large rock forms the centre-piece of the house design, a geological artifact enclosed within a vitrine, with living spaces wrapping around and over the top.
Natural light falls through ceiling apertures accentuating the contrast between the lightness of the skin and the weight of the earth.
This affords our clients the ease of single level living for the majority of the time. The three levels are connected by a lift, allowing disabled access from the garage to the top floor living areas and to the mid-floor home cinema, study, laundry and guest areas. Formally, the tent-like metal roof and walls are folded over and around the central volcanic rock creating angular sculpted spaces between. Natural light falls through ceiling apertures accentuating the contrast between the lightness of the skin and the weight of the earth.
The top level contains the living areas and main bedroom and opens out to sunny decks with views across the park to Mt Eden.

Basalt the local black rock of the region is what this site was about. We chose to build the house as an accretion on this rocky basalt outcrop with the same inherent material transformed. An outgrowth which was made of a mix of water, sand, cement and the granular basalt. Concrete finely honed to serve as refuge, to face the climatic changes that the site offered.
The house was conceived as a cast for human occupation, a refuge which trapped the views, the sun, the rain, the air, and became one with the cliff edge it stood on. Akin to the growth of a coral, the substance of the walls and roof dictate the experience of inhabiting the site.

Photographs cannot express the sense of weight when one approaches, or the sense of release at the edge of the pool at the far end of the open terrace, the feeling of burrowing deeper enroute, past the stacked stones, to the lower bedroom. The house, a cast, an object for living, whatever you may call it, has transformed into a belvedere to minutely observe and sense the spectacle of nature, of shade as a retreat against the sharp tropical sun, the resurgence of life, a sudden BURST of green, when the hard pounding monsoon arrives, the waft of breezes filling the air with the fragrance of moist earth, the movement of stars across the very dark night skies. Stone has been used in many forms, based on use, wear, grip, texture. The dark saturated black mattness conjures a cool sense of refuge and calm.

Antonio Ramirez was managing his pizzeria Albabel during more than 20 years in PicaĂąa when he decided to contact Masquespacio, having a dream to convert his old restaurant in a completely new one. Being passionate about gastronomy both on a national as international level, Antonio since a few years had the wish to offer a new food concept that fusions the Mediterranean kitchen with some Andalusian from its own roots and a touch of international ingredients. For this new adventure, counting with the support of his brother Rafael he aspired to have a space in which he could feel like at home.
That way the new space for Albabel in Picaña is clearly inspired by the Andalusian roots from their founders, through recognizable materials from the south of Spain like raffia, earth bricks, plants and overall decorative elements. The design seeks to fusion the most eclectic part of Andalusia with the sophistication of their craftsmanship. Like usual in many projects from Masquespacio, above the project includes a touch of explosive colors combined with patterns that represent the graphic inspiration of the Spanish creative consultancy. To be enlightened on the other hand is the use of olive wood furniture, including some chairs and stools made exclusively for the project with the most common wood in the south of Spain.
