C3P/ RPP

Casa Tres Patios (C3P) addresses important topics via its three programs: Research, Pedagogy and Practice. The goal is to generate reflections that inspire the construction of possibilities for actions which address the problems analyzed based on alternative research, pedagogy and artistic residencies2. The research program comes from the organizational desire to add to the knowledge base regarding pertinent topics relating to the local, national and global contexts.

This publication represents the curious-obsessive-exploratory characteristics of the organization and functions to feed the doubts and projects that force movement, growth, reflection and inquiry.

As part of the research program C3P will produce 9 Micro-publications that present diverse and provocative approaches related to the topic: New Relationships with Capital. For C3P to begin to explore this theme was an inevitable task because it acknowledges the need in the evolution of the organization to begin to reconstruct itself in order to become a platform in which contemporary artistic practices and cultural and trans disciplinary exchanges take place.

Anticipating the questions regarding new relationships with capital, are the experiences of organizations and collectives that develop cultural and artistic activities in Medellín, which reflect systemic and social problems regarding sustainability within the current economic dynamics. Among many others that enter into the discussion, and which are common locally and throughout the world, are conflicts such as those generated by migrations, income disparity, illegality and corruption. However, in spite of the limitations of these dynamics, in recent years’ various initiatives have emerged from these communities and which, beginning from a critical approach, take action and open alternate paths in their own search for well-being and creation.

In the first informal searches, ideas such as collaborative creation, creative economics, commons, etc., were explored in order to extend the opportunity to diversify the means by which ideas can be materialized such as platforms to create contents that can include mechanisms and records of the cultural expressions and actions that could give meaning to the projects of those organizations.

THE FIRST PROJECT IS BORN FROM THE TOPIC NEW RELATIONSHIPS WITH CAPITAL: In order to construct a wide field of explorations, a research project3 was proposed that works parallel to the activities of the other two programs of C3P and that was charged with compiling the information for these micro-publications. This exploratory research project seeks to begin an investigation that results in a contribution to the sustainability of cultural dynamics. This initial step is to approach relations with capital in its current state, to maintain a critical approach to it and from there to understand or to invent a role for culture inside, outside or on the margin; That is, a new way of building culture.

How do the residents understand the topic?

How is the pedagogical program (LCC) integrated into the dynamics mentioned earlier?

N ew +R el a c i o n s h i p s + C a pi t a l New Relationships with Capital, has different thematic references4.

The topics that were examined in the past include: the dynamics of self-organization, sustainability of cultural, educational and artistic projects, collectivism, the cosmopolitan dimension, activism and disciplinary inequality.

The meanings of the words used to describe the research topic are explained as follows: With the emergence of the concept of capital, one of the basic elements of the economic phenomenon is defined, and in this way actions are inscribed in this broad context. Then, relationship refers to the social effects of the economic element defined above. Finally, in expressing novelty as a quality of this relationship, it is being made explicit that the searches and explorations will address different aspects of the ways in which society is currently related to capital, including existing alternative practices and others, which have become trendy, but which still have the feature of novelty versus the traditional dynamics of sustainability.

The topic is immersed in the ways which different organizations and individuals can develop different connections, that lead to collaborative work so that they are sustainable in time and can work toward the cultural development of a specific context. The theme itself also has an integrative character, because its complexity allows for the participation from naturalistic, economic, political, philosophical and sociological perspectives among many others that, in parallel, react by generating questions, criticisms and ideas about transformation. It is also an issue that requires the development of a critical position considering its possible social impacts.

In researching new relationships with capital, a quest for an essential “something� in the current economic, social and cultural context is generated, with the intention of being interpreted and reinterpreted, motivating ideas that first result in speculation on alternatives for transformation, and in the future, in a movement necessary to achieve sustainability in modern times.

What is it to ask about new relationships with capital? To look critically at the themes that compose them and to describe them, to see possibilities for the development of culture, an environment in which a climate of crisis, changes and re-significations that demand food and nutrients to strengthen and grow.

• Social includes concepts and ideas from different social sciences, mainly from sociology because of the social dynamics of the interactions with capital. • Economic includes aspects related to the concept of capital and some of its considerations such as workforce, subjectivity in valuation, production and consumption chains, among others. • Epistemic includes ideas and concepts related to knowledge that play a role within these economic dynamics, which can no longer be considered isolated from them.

SERIES +MICRO +PUBLICATIONS A series of objects are proposed to disseminate the research activities that were developed in 2016. They are a series of 9 micro-publications that are composed of diverse topics, sources of information, questions and doubts about the subject: New relationships with capital.

There is so much “fabric to be cut” regarding this topic that we prefer to show our explorations in another way. Here you will not find explicit conclusions or elaborate conceptual proposals. You will find pure raw material, many points placed in space, with the intention of challenging you to join them with imaginary lines of thought and reflection, giving you the meaning that Professor Mizuta5 enunciates, in the sentence that begins this introduction, which deals with living files, the creation of worlds and the mixture of universes.

This way of presenting information has two intentions: the first is to entice and provoke because we are not interested in researching alone.

Although presented as research in the academic sense of the word, it does not happen in an academy, nor is it framed in a single disciplinary field, so the invitation remains open. We expose this rigorously referenced unfinished and open work, so that whoever wants to follow the track and in order to begin to construct ways of generating knowledge collectively can approach, question, contradict, contribute and add to. The second is to follow the direction of the work and proposals in C3P publicly opening the process, describing what has been explored, valuing the paths that have been taken, often (and hopefully) to unexpected places.

The 9 micro-publications, such as research notebooks, show the thought process based on contents that are grouped by similarities or controversies. There are questions, literal fragments of texts in the original language, notes with underlines, arrows that relate different contents, schemes, drawings and screenshots of documentaries, among other types of information. Descriptions of the intentions and contents of the 9 micro-publications.

New relationships with capital: the first integrates all of them, but does not contain them, rather it introduces them, recommends them and exposes the ideas that preceded them. This is the opening; it is a topic that gets its name here.

Knowledge / art-science-transcendence / functions and roles: abstract and concrete pieces of knowledge where everyday reasoning, philosophical arguments and mundane and transcendental questions take place. Perhaps the way we understand the world and reality are the factors that define how we relate to them.

Creative Communal Laboratories: integrates the commitment that C3P has based on its positions and possibilities, with respect to the challenges offered by the context and the pedagogical proposals. Here, the dynamics of contemporary art, the ways of understanding what knowledge is and the relationships that are evidenced in the construction of the lives of the citizen participants result in a pedagogical proposal whose name is the title of this micro-publication.

Information / societies: in these pages there are fragments among which a relationship between information and human dynamics is discovered, and which as a society we have been developing for a little more than a few decades.

Inevitably the trend to the urban and the corresponding need for information appears on the border between the private and the public.

System / power / human capital: for a long time, the phrase “knowledge is power� has popularly been used. This functions as a formula in which complexities are inserted such as the privatization of knowledge and the trend towards specialization that generates a variety of controversies.

Virtualization / dematerialization / life cycles: the scale changes, it is no longer spoken about as a social phenomenon. Daily life and the diversity of consequences and the effects that it brings to the lives of human beings in the contemporary world are found in these sections.

Limits / immateriality / new ways: contains some asides in which one perceives the loss of the limits that materialism imposes on the life. There is talk of non-places and of immaterial labor. New dynamics are integrated in the inhabiting of this undefined, almost unlimited space, and new currencies and time banks appear as well as self-management and reorganization of traditional distribution chains.

Perspectives / abstractions / theorizations: various ways of describing economic dynamics, contemporary societies and our ways of being and inhabiting the land are in this micro-publication. Here we compile perspectives, conceptualizations and theories that have described the phenomenon we are exploring. Some are fatalistic, others hopeful and conspiracy is not lacking. Different disciplines between sociology, philosophy and economics present interesting ideas to discuss. ??? / !!! / ...: The conceptual part of the Research program is covered in the 9 micro-publications that, with their contents and questions, open new paths of exploration. The ellipsis anticipates that this is not an end, rather it is a point along the way, the exclamation marks are intended to integrate concerns and postures regarding that which is shown; and question marks, are a finality and also a conjunction, since not everything has been answered or covered either in this series of micropublications or in the fields of knowledge that are mentioned, however in constructing them there is a way to begin.

We begin these reflections with the questions that the philosopher Gilles Deleuze asks when analyzing the television productions directed by Jean-Luc Godard called “Six for two”, reproduced by the channel France-3 in 1976 and that, according to the translator, generated an “enormous controversy.”6 Deleuze’s reflections are interesting in this context because they integrate many of the elements that are dealt with in this series of micro-publications. In addition, they provide a reflexive and critical context for relationships with capital which is still valid today.
