The T Photographers who Captured History from D-Day to Berlin

The Liberation of Europe

he Second World War presented a huge range of challenges to press photography both in terms of its execution and getting the results in print. Life on the home front was the main subject until the invasion of France changed everything in 1944.

Mark Barnes

Photographers from The Times were part of a talented group who were there to capture the momentous events taking place from the moment the troops stepped ashore, as the Allies fought their way from the D-Day beaches all the way to Berlin. They captured thousands of images of the fighting and its aftermath: bombed out towns, tanks and the inevitable human death toll, but also troops moving through a scarred landscape, the civilian population in joy and fear, and the daily activities of the soldiers themselves. They were on hand to witness the surrender of German commanders and some of their subsequent suicides, and also when King George VI made history when he became the first monarch since Henry V to confer knighthoods on the battlefield.

Succinct and accessible text giving an overview of how Europe was liberated, featuring over 400 photographs, most unpublished.

Operation Barbarossa 1941 Hitler Against Stalin Christer Bergström

The largest military campaign in history gets the Christer Bergström treatment with many unpublished and rare images. Operation Barbarossa was the largest military campaign in history. Springing from Hitler ’s fanatical desire to conquer the Soviet territories, defeat Bolshevism and create ‘Lebensraum’ for the German people, it pitted two diametrically opposed armed forces against one another. The invasion began with 4.5 million troops attacking 2.3 million defenders. On one side was the Wehrmacht, without any doubt the world’s most advanced military force. On the other were the Soviet armed forces, downtrodden, humiliated, decapitated and terrorized by an autocratic and crude dictator with no military education whatsoever. Initially Operation Barbarossa led to a row of unparalleled tactical victories for the attackers. In just five months, an area of around 1.4 million square kilometres was captured. Tremendous losses were inflicted on the Soviet armed forces. 566,852 troops World War II | Reference were listed as killed in action, 2,335,482 as missing in action (including POWs), and around 500,000 Soviet July 2016 • 9781612004013 • £35.00 reservists had been captured while still mobilizing – Hardback • 297 x 210 mm making a total of approximately 3.4 million losses. But 300 illustrations • 300 pages by the end of December 1941, Operation Barbarossa had ground to halt; how was this possible? Christer Bergström tells the story in great detail; as with The Battle of Britain: An Epic Conflict Revisited he combines facts and figures with the human stories behind the action, and draws new conclusions based on many years of research in German and Russian archives.

Caesar’s Greatest Victory The Battle of Alesia, 52 BC John Sadler and Rosie Serdiville

A new account that reassess the role of both sides, and the campaign as a whole, not just the Battle of Alesia itself. The Battle for Alesia was a decisive moment in world history. It determined whether Rome would finally conquer Gaul or whether Celtic chieftain Vercingetorix would throw off the yoke and consequently whether a number of independent Celtic tribal kingdoms could resist the might of Rome. Failure would have been a total defeat for Julius Caesar, not just in Gaul but in the Senate. European history, and therefore world history, might have been a very different story. Caesar’s campaign of 52 BC frequently hung in the balance. Vercingetorix was a far more formidable opponent than any he’d encountered in Gaul; bold, charismatic, and imbued with strategic insight of the highest order. The Romans were caught totally off-guard and it seemed all too likely their grip on Gaul, which Caesar had imagined secure, would be prised free. The Siege of Alesia itself was one of the most astonishing military undertakings of all times. Caesar’s Greatest Victory fully reveals both sides of the conflict, to explore in depth the personalities involved and to examine the legacy of the campaign which still resonates today. The arms, equipment, tactics and fighting styles of Roman and Celtic armies are explained, as well as the charisma and leadership of Caesar and Vercingetorix and the command and control structures of both sides. Using new evidence from archaeology, the authors construct a fresh account of not just the siege itself but also the Alesia campaign and place it into the wider context of the history of warfare.

Vikings at War Kim Hjardar and Vegard Vike

Comprehensive account of the Viking art of war, weapons and the history of their conquests with over 380 illustrations. Vikings at War presents a sumptuous depiction of how the Vikings waged war; their weapons technology, offensive and defensive warfare, military traditions and tactics, their fortifications, ships and command structure. It also portrays the Viking raids and conquest campaigns that brought the Vikings to virtually every corner of Europe and even to America. Viking ships landed on almost every shore in the Western world during the 350 years that followed the introduction of the sail into the region, from the 9th to the 11th century. Viking ravages united the Spanish kingdoms and stopped Charlemagne and the Franks' advance in Europe. Wherever Viking ships roamed, enormous suffering followed in their wake, but the encounter between cultures changed both European and Nordic societies. Employing unorthodox and unpredictable strategies, Kim Hjardar & Vegard Vike which were hard for more organised forces to respond to, the most crucial element of the Viking’s success was their basic strategy of evading the Medieval History | Reference enemy by arriving by sea, then attacking quickly and with great force before withdrawing quickly. Small Team Missions Behind Enemy Lines Koos Stadler

Gripping first-hand account of the combat operations and life of a member of the secretive and elite South African Special Forces, known as ‘Recces’.

South Africa | Special Forces October 2016 • 9781612004044 • £19.99 Hardback • 228 x 152 mm 65 illustrations • 384 pages

South African Special Forces, known as the ‘Recces’, are an elite group of soldiers that few can aspire to join. Shrouded in secrecy due to the covert nature of their work, the legendary Recces have long fascinated, but little is known about how they operate. Now one of this select band has written a tell-all book about the extraordinary missions he embarked on and the nail-biting action he experienced in the Border War. Shortly after passing the infamously gruelling Special Forces selection course in the early 1980s, Koos Stadler joined the so-called Small Teams group at 5 Reconnaissance Regiment. This subunit was made up of two-man teams and was responsible for numerous secret and highly dangerous missions deep behind enemy lines. With only one other team member, Stadler was sent to blow up railway lines and enemy fighter jets in the south of Angola. As he crawled in and out of enemy-infested territory, he stared death in the face many times. A gripping, first-hand account that reveals the near superhuman physical and psychological powers these Special Forces operators have to display.

The Casemate Classic War Fiction series publishes new editions of forgotten classics that perfectly capture their era, starting with the conflict that gave birth to gritty realism in fiction, WWI.

Mr Britling Sees it Through H. G. Wells A profound and very human account of the early years of the war, told from the perspective of a father rather than combatants, but no less revealing. Mr Britling lives in the quintessentially English town of Matching’s Easy in Essex. He is a great thinker, an essayist, but most of all an optimist. When war arrives he is forced to reassess many of the things he had been so sure of. The family’s young German tutor is forced to head back to Germany, and Mr Britling’s seventeen year old son enlists in the Territorials. Day by day and month by month, Wells chronicles the unfolding events and public reaction as witnessed by the inhabitants of one house in rural Essex.

Behind the Lines W. F. Morris Behind the Lines is a thriller that follows on from the success of W. F. Morris’s first novel, Bretherton: Khaki or Field-Grey? Morris is again concerned with questions of identity, allegiance, chance, concealment and self-discovery. A subaltern is forced to flee when he accidentally kills an overbearing, taunting fellow officer: appearances are all against him and he does not trust trench justice. He becomes a fugitive and has to join forces with other deserters, lost soldiers and outlaws in a hand-to-mouth existence in the no man’s land between opposing forces. A series of adventures and disasters ensue, including capture by the Germans and near death by firing squad. Only his own bravery and the devotion of his fiancée can rescue him from his plight. 9781612004136 ■ August 2016 ■ £9.99 190 x 132 mm ■ Paperback ■ 314 pages

Ronald Gurner A platoon of inexperienced British soldiers crosses to France, in excited and nervous anticipation of what is to come; they find themselves at Ypres where the battle-weary Allied troops are dug in, and slaughter surrounds them. With their young, upright officer Freddy Mann, they are soon in the thick of it, burying the dead, experiencing the terror of bombardment, being picked off by snipers, with some unable to cope and refusing to go over the top. We see the action through their eyes, from privates to the senior officers of the wider battalion, with a focus on Freddy Mann’s journey from idealistic officer barely out of school, to battle-hardened cynic, barely hanging on as those around him are cut down, maimed or crack. 9781612004112 ■ August 2016 ■ £8.99 190 x 132 mm ■ Paperback ■ 242 pages

André Chamson Set deep in the mountains of southern France, this charming novella tells the story of a man from the Cèvennes Mountains called Roux, who refuses to join the army at the outbreak of war in 1914. Instead, he flees and hides in the hills, only returning occasionally to the farm where he left his mother and sisters. The people of the valley condemn his desertion and hope the police will find his hideout. But as the years go by, and the horrors of the trenches become known, the local people start to understand Roux’s actions. Chamson explores questions of perception, morality and conscience with a lightness of touch, painting an atmospheric picture of life in a WWI-era rural community. 9781612004174 ■ August 2016 ■ £7.99 190 x 132 mm ■ Paperback ■ 112 pages

The new Past & Present series reconstructs historical battles by using photography, juxtaposing modern views with those of the past. It shows how much of the infrastructure has remained and points to the passing nature of things – such as outfits, uniforms, and ephemera. These books present a coherent link between now and then, linking the monuments and battlefield relics with what actually happened.

Past & Present: 101st Airborne September 1944

Leo Marriott and Simon Forty Operation “Market Garden” is a strongly debated subject among WW2 historians: was it a brave attempt to end the war early that foundered for being a bridge too far, or was it, rather, an ill-conceived waste of resources that should have been used on another Front? 101st parachuted right into the middle of enemy territory and north of Eindhoven. They met little resistance to begin with and captured most of their initial objectives by the end of 17 September. But the Germans managed to demolish the division’s primary objective, a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son, forcing the 101st to attempted to capture a similar bridge a few kilometers away at best. The Screaming Eagles saw seventy-two days of fierce round-the-clock fighting against crack German troops and showed their fighting ability and tenacity. October 2016 • 9781612004235 • £9.99 Paperback • 234 x 184 mm • 64 pages • 140 illus.

Past & Present: 6th Airborne Division June 1944

Leo Marriott and Simon Forty Operation Tonga began at 22:56 on the night of 5 June, when six Halifax heavy bombers took off from Tarrant Rushton towing six Horsas carrying a coup-de-main force, who were tasked with capturing the bridges over the Caen Canal and the River Orne. 6th Airborne Division – which included 1st Canadian Para Bn – had been allotted three specific tasks to achieve, apart from protecting the eastern flank of the Allied seaborne landings. First, it was to capture intact the two bridges over the Caen Canal and the Orne River at Benouville and Ranville. Second, the division was to destroy the heavily fortified Merville coastal artillery battery located at Franceville Plage, to ensure that it could not shell the British forces landing on Sword Beach. A third task was to destroy several bridges spanning the River Dives – at Varaville, Robehomme, Bures, and Troarn. December 1944

Leo Marriott and Simon Forty Bastogne will live forever in the annals of American military history. From the resounding “Nuts,” in response to the German demand for surrender, to the breaking of the siege by Patton’s Third Army – brilliantly disengaged from its positions on the Saar, wheeled 90 degrees and marched northwards faster than any thought possible – the defense of Bastogne and victory in the Ardennes was one of the greatest feats of American arms in the European Theater. This title in the Past & Present series looks at the encirclement, siege, and relief with then and now photographs; specially commissioned aerial photos, and a wealth of detail.

Past & Present: Omaha Beach June 1944

Leo Marriott and Simon Forty Of the five beaches attacked on 6 June, Omaha saw the sternest fighting. Well-placed defenders on the high ground and extensive beach defenses did their job. On top of this, so much had gone wrong with the first wave: many of the amphibious DD Sherman tanks didn’t reach the beach. Another problem was that many units landed in the wrong place. Finally, the German emplacements and defenses were well-placed on high ground and the only cover on the beach – the seawall – was over a killing ground. The attacking forces – units of the US 29th and 1st Inf Divs – suffered over 2,000 casualties, many of them drowned during the approach, but led by US Rangers, the American troops pushed forward and by nightfall, they had gained hold of the beach and its immediate hinterland. Churchill: Warrior How a Military Life Guided Winston's Finest Hours Brian Lavery

Sunday Times bestselling author Brian Lavery writes on the unique 60-year military career of Winston Churchill, and how his experiences informed his strategy and leadership.

CHURCHILL

WARRIOR

On a typical day during the Second World War, Winston Churchill, as Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, issued numerous memos to the ministers and service commanders on many different subjects, on both the grand strategy and the detail of the war effort. He had a unique and intimate inside knowledge of all three services which allowed him to assess their real needs – a crucial task when money, material resources, and especially manpower, were reaching their limits. No-one else has ever been able to balance the needs of the services in such a way.

This book looks at how Churchill gained his unique insight into war strategy and administration, and the effect this had on his thinking and leadership. The Classic Guide to Commanding A Second World War Battleship Rory O'Conor, introduction by Brian Lavery

The essential primer in running a warship written by the celebrated Captain of HMS Hood.

naval & maritime | Reference

Having completed the highly prestigious commission of commanding HMS Hood, then the most famous warship in the world, in her halcyon pre-war years, Captain Rory O’Conor brought together all of his experiences to create the ultimate officers’ guide for running a steel fighting ship. Published in 1937, and now recognised as one of the most influential, yet highly accessible, volumes on naval command and organisation, Running a Big Ship provides a truly unique insight into life at sea during the Second World War. Credited with making a significant contribution to the wartime navy’s esprit de corps, the book had a lasting impact on shipboard understanding and relations on vessels large and small, as young, diverse crews withstood the considerable strain of actual war. Such credit is due in large part to the main body of the book which sets out each of the duties required of a Royal Navy Officer in detailed, clear terms and through O’Conor’s insightful advice.

Game of Shadows The Telegraph Book of Spies & Espionage Edited by Philip Parker

Drawing on over a century of news, comment and analysis to cast new light on a world that has long lived in the shadows. The First World War was the cradle of modern espionage and the build-up to the conflict saw a scramble as the British government tried desperately to build an intelligence service. Taking as its cue these formative years, Game of Shadows: The Telegraph Book of Spies & Espionage relates the thrilling, intriguing and shadowy story of the spies and counter-intelligence operatives who engaged in an often deadly struggle to uncover the other side’s secrets. As told by the editors, journalists and feature writers of the newspaper, this volume will trace the evolution of the various strands of British intelligence, from the foundation of what would become MI5 and MI6 to the sabotage operations of Special Operations Executive in the Second World War and the subterfuge experts of Naval Intelligence Unit, where Ian Fleming cut his teeth and formed the early ideas for his fictional creation James Bond. Instructions on Warfare, Terrain, Endurance and the Dangers of the Tropics Edited by Ruth Sheppard

Collection of official WWII training manuals produced by the British and US armies to help their soldiers survive the deadly jungle. During the Second World War, British and American soldiers were sent to new and challenging theatres, fighting to survive not only encounters with the enemy but the landscape they found themselves in. Being posted to South-East Asia and the Pacific to fight the Japanese meant soldiers had to learn to survive in the tropics, fighting and living in endless steamy jungle and perilous swamps. To help them in this completely alien environment, the British and US armies produced a number of official training manuals and guides to explain to the men how to identify and fight the Japanese and avoid their deadly panji traps, but also ‘jungle lore': how to find and cook plants that were safe to eat; which animals and insects could kill them; how to identify and treat tropical illnesses and diseases; and avoid the dangers of polluted water and cannibals.

In Hitler’s Germany, colour photography was primarily coopted for state purposes, such as the military publication Signal, or the Luftwaffe’s own magazine, Der Adler (Eagle). But a number of men had cameras of their own, and in this painstakingly acquired collection, originally published in France, we can witness true life on Germany’s airfields during the period of the Luftwaffe’s ascendancy. Thus not only do we see famous planes such as the Me-109, Ju-87 or He-111, but the wide variety of more obscure types with which the Germans began the war. The array of Arados, Dorniers, Heinkels – not to mention elegant 4-engine Condors – that were initially employed in the war are here in plain sight and full colour, providing not only an insight into WWII history but a model maker’s dream.

Just as fascinating are the shots of the airmen themselves, along with their ground crews – full of confidence and cheer as they bested every other air force in Europe during these years, with the single exception of the RAF’s Fighter Command in latesummer 1940. But that was no big stumbling block to the Luftwaffe, which had bigger fish to fry in Russia and North Africa the following year.

In the authors’ next work, The Years of Defeat, we will see how the war turned more grim for the Luftwaffe, even as its expertise and skill at more deadly aircraft designs, increased. In The Victory Years we have a uniquely intimate view of an air force at the very apex of its capabilities.

An intensely detailed account of this combat leader’s life, as well as ferocious armoured warfare in World War II. This is the story of the most highly decorated German regimental commander of World War II, known as the “Panzer Graf” (Armoured Count). An aristocratic Silesian, whose ancestors had faced the Mongols at Legnica, Strachwitz first won the Iron Cross in the Great War. After fighting with the Freikorps and in between the wars, he was serving with the 1st Panzer Division when the Polish campaign inaugurated World War II. Wounded 12 times during the war, and barely surviving a lethal car crash, he was finally able to surrender to the Americans in May 1945.

The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Italy, from the Winter Line to Anzio Frank van Lunteren

A close examination of the 504th P.I.R. in the Fifth Army’s Italy Campaign is provided here in unsurpassed detail. Upon the completion of the Sicily and Salerno Campaigns in 1943, the paratroopers of Colonel Reuben Tucker’s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment were among the first Allied troops to enter Naples. A ghost town at first sight, the residents soon expressed their joy at being liberated. Four weeks later the 504th—upon the special request of General Mark Clark—spearheaded Fifth Army’s drive through the notorious Volturno Valley—the Germans’ next stand.

Spearhead of Fifth Army

January 1944 seemed to promise a period of rest, but the landing at Anzio meant deployment for the paratroopers again, this time by ship. A bombing raid during their beach landing was a forecast of eight weeks of bitter fighting. Holding the right flank of the beachhead along the Mussolini Canal, the paratroopers earned their nickname “Devils in Baggy Pants” for their frontline incursions into enemy lines, as well as their stubborn defense of the Allied salient.

Under a Blood Red Sun The Remarkable Saga of Tor pedo Boat Squadron 3 at the Onset of the Pacific War John Domagalski

A story of the courage and sacrifice of men thousands of miles from their homeland, representing American gallantry and fighting prowess. During the opening days of World War II in the Pacific, a small group of American sailors in the Philippines were propelled into the forefront of the fighting. They manned six small wooden torpedo (PT) boats and were led by a courageous, larger-than-life character in Lieutenant John D. Bulkeley. The exploits of the unit – including the evacuation of General MacArthur – were immortalised in the blockbuster 1945 movie They Were Expendable but since then the saga of Bulkeley and his men has slipped into history. Under a Blood Red Sun revives the story of the Philippine PT-boats through the intertwined accounts of Bulkeley and his subordinate officers and men.

War On Two Fronts An Infantry Commander's War in Iraq and the Pentagon Col. Christopher P. Hughes

Col. Hughes, winner of The Army Historical Foundation’s Distinguished Writing Award, writes movingly of his “No-Slack” battalion at war in Iraq. The war in Iraq got off to a bang for Hughes, when his brigade command tent was fragged by a Muslim sergeant in the 101st, leaving him briefly in charge of the brigade. Transferred to Washington after his tour in Iraq, Hughes then writes an illuminating account of the herculean efforts of many in the Pentagon to work around the corporatist elements of its bureaucracy. Written with candour and no shortage of humour, intermixed with brutal scenes of combat and frank analysis, this book is a must-read for all those who seek insight into our current war in the Middle East.

From the beaches to the Falaise Gap Leo Marriott and Simon Forty

Mixing text, maps and images to explain and interpret the complexities of the Normandy campaign. The Normandy Battlefields: D-Day & the Bridgehead ended as the Allies fought to expand their D-Day foothold. In Bocage and Breakout, Leo Marriott and Simon Forty take the story forward as the success of the invasion continued into the Cotentin, with Cherbourg falling on 29 June, before it bogged down in face of determined German defence and the Bocage countryside—innumerable small fields surrounded by hedgerows, each one hiding anti-tank weapons, mortars and machine guns. The three months of war in June–July 1944 were brutal, with losses of front-line troops as heavy as in World War I.

Barksdale's Charge The True High Tide of the Confederacy at Gettysburg, July 2, 1862 Phillip Thomas Tucker

Barksdale’s Charge describes the exact moment when the Confederacy reached its zenith. On the third day of Gettysburg, Robert E. Lee launched a magnificent attack. For pure pageantry it was unsurpassed, and it also marked the centrepiece of the war, both time-wise and in terms of how the conflict had turned a corner—from persistent Confederate hopes to impending Rebel despair. The Confederacy’s real “high tide” at Gettysburg had come the afternoon before, during the swirling conflagration when Longstreet’s corps first entered the battle, when the Federals just barely held on.

Niklas Zetterling and Anders Frankson

Recreating the drive on Moscow from the perspective of the soldiers as well as the generals. At the end of September 1941, more than a million German soldiers lined up along the frontline just 180 miles west of Moscow. They were well trained, confident, and had good reasons to hope that the war in the East would be over with one last offensive. Facing them was an equally large Soviet force, but whose soldiers were neither as well trained nor as confident. The battle, not fought in isolation, had a crucial role in the overall German strategy in the East, and its outcome reveals why the failure of the German assault on Moscow may well have been true turning point of World War II.

To War with the 4th A Century of Frontline Combat with the U.S. 4th Infantry Division, from the Argonne to the Ardennes to Afghanistan Martin King and Jason Nulty

The 4th Infantry Division has always been there in America’s modern wars, this book illuminates their story. On 14 September 1918 the men of the “Ivy” Division stood up in their trenches and prepared to attack. In World War II on D-Day they scrambled ashore across the sands of Utah beach and remained fighting in Europe until Hitler was dead and Germany had surrendered. In Vietnam they would execute precarious “search and destroy” missions in dense jungles against a determined and resourceful enemy. They fought in Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein, and deployed to Afghanistan for a 12-month combat mission. This book explores the division through first-hand interviews with veterans and the expert analysis of the authors.

This is the first history which allows the reader to see how both wars flowed seamlessly into one another and how they impacted on southern Africa. Sandwiched between the glamour and heroism of the Zulu War, and the controversy and bitterness of the Boer War, the Matabele Wars of the 1890s have long been southern Africa’s forgotten colonial wars. With oft-claimed links to the infamous Jameson Raid, the origins of the second Matabele War are as fascinating and controversial as those of the first, and it was a dirty, hard-fought guerrilla war, more akin to the African bush wars of the 1960s and ’70s than those waged at the height of the colonial period. africa | 19th century

Equally unique, was the exclusive use of social media to invite and encourage individuals to tell their personal stories, without apology or recrimination, and so provide an indelible oral history of the war.

Dust, Donkeys and Delusion examines and clinically debunks the myth that has grown up around Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the so-called `Man with the Donkey', the quintessential Australian `hero' of Gallipoli. While the various elements of the Simpson myth have now become popularly accepted as `history', Dust, Donkeys and Delusion shows clearly, based on historical documents, both official and unofficial, that almost every word ever spoken or written about Simpson following his death is false. Western Desert Campaign 1940–41 Glenn Wahlert Studying Australia’s role in the North Africa campaign and the fight against Italy. While the North African campaign has been studied in detail over the years, much of this study has been dedicated to the battles between the British 8th Army and Rommel's Afrika Korps. There has been little serious study of Wavell's campaign against Italian forces in 1940- 41, nor of the role played by the Australian 6th Division in the eventual Italian defeat. Part of this can be attributed to wartime propaganda that labelled the Italian Army dilettantes and mocked their courage. The truth is much different. Many Italian units showed incredible bravery, and the Australian assaults on fortress towns such as Bardia were far from a walkover. Today's aspiring military commanders need look no further than the early Western Desert campaign for historical examples of brilliant leadership, detailed planning, deception, surprise, manoeuvre warfare and relentless pursuit, all against overwhelming odds.

Greece February to April 1941 Michael Tyquin The AAMC’s perspective and their role in Greece in 1941. As with the failed attempt to seize the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915, the allied campaign to assist Greece against a seemingly invincible German juggernaut was poorly conceived and probably doomed even as plans were made to assist that country. Like any campaign, however, it holds lessons for the contemporary student of strategy, tactics and history.Greece presented singular geographic difficulties for the defending forces, its mountainous defiles dictating the distribution of ports, road and rail routes. The primitive state of the national infrastructure did little to help a long-term defensive posture. Operations in Greece proved to be a nightmare, particularly for logistics units, which struggled with primitive communication systems in rugged terrain over which the enemy enjoyed total air superiority.Poor liaison between the Greek and Commonwealth forces did not help matters, nor was the force deployed adequate for its task. The allies never enjoyed air superiority, nor could they consolidate any in-depth defence in time to be effective. The official British history of the campaign stated that the ‘British campaign on the mainland of Greece was from start to finish a withdrawal’. Greece: February to April 1941 explores these complexities, and mistakes through the eyes of the Australian Army Medical Corps.

I Was There Memoirs of Fleet Admiral Leahy, 1940–1945 William D. Leahy

The military leader closest to President Roosevelt during WWII tells his story from 1942 to V-J Day. This book will appeal to all readers interested in World War II and particularly the American role and how President Roosevelt’s orders and directives were discussed and carried out. Leahy’s memoir stands out for its candid and dispassionate understanding of events, since he was one of the few to be on a firstname basis with the president. Of particular interest are Leahy’s accounts of the main conferences from 1942 going forward where he was always at FDR’s side. Long out of print, this paperback edition should be welcome to all major libraries and the book trade.

1919–1939 Jacques Pernet and Jean-Charles Stasi

Pernet and Stasi vividly tell us the story of German aviation in this richly illustrated book. The period between the two World Wars is an extremely interesting but largely unknown part of the German aviation history. Signed in June 1919 and promulgated in January 1920, the Treaty of Versailles included many measures to limit the Germany's rearmament. However, the Treaty did not damage the aeronautical industry as much, which managed to bypass the restrictions of the Treaty regarding building vehicles and equipment, especially in other countries.

Colonel Sir George Lisle, 1615–1648 Serena Jones The first biography of English Civil War Officer George Lisle. Few army officers of King Charles I shone as bright as George Lisle during the English Civil Wars, yet have drawn so little attention from subsequent historians. Born in London in 1615, Lisle took to soldiering and was commissioned as a Lieutenant – Colonel at the outbreak of war in 1642. He fought at Edgehill; then at Chalgrove and the First Battle of Newbury in 1643 – latterly where his courage in leading a forlorn hope against a wall of musketeers and artillery first drew him to public attention.

No Armour But Courage

In this first ever biography of Lisle, the author has painstakingly pieced together his personal background and re-examined every known detail of his career. The persistent memory of his execution is traced forwards through later writers and painters into the 20th century to complete the first cohesive picture of one of King Charles' most loyal, effective and respected military officers.

The Arte Militaire The Application of 17th Century Military Manuals to Conflict Archaeology Warwick Louth

How military manuals were used, and how they can still be utilised and seen within the historical landscape. Military Manuals have been extensively used as a source, but only recently has their potential to conflict archaeology been recognised. Using correlated GIS, landscape archaeology, metal detecting, military knowledge and experimental archaeology, we can better understand the limitations and strengths drill books provide us. This study examines the extent individual drill can be identified in the archaeological record and to what level and extent this can be applied to predictive modelling of artefact collections on battlefields. Louth attempts to actively break down how drill leaves material remains and the archaeological means these might be studied.

The Battle of Montgomery, 1644 The English Civil War in the Welsh Borderlands Jonathan Worton

Presenting the most detailed reconstruction and interpretation of this important battle. Reflecting on the Battle of Montgomery, Sir Thomas Myddelton – who jointly commanded the victorious Parliamentarian Army – described it as: 'as great a victory as hath been gained in any part of the kingdom'. Fought on 18 September 1644 in mid-Wales, Montgomery was the largest engagement in the Principality during the First English Civil War of 1642 to 1646. Making use of contemporary sources – many of which are referenced here for the first time – the campaign, armies and commanders are fully considered before the battle is investigated. Because the site has not been certainly located, the author uses fieldwork and archival information to propose the most likely battle field, before examining the course of the engagement. The book also considers the wider war in Northerly Wales and the North-West and West Midlands of England – a region underrepresented in Civil War historiography. 17th Century History November 2016 • 9781911096238 • £19.95 Paperback • 248 x 180 mm • 120 pages • 42 colour & b/w illus. & maps

The Metamorphosis of War The Human Experience of the English Civil Wars, 1642–1651 Peter Gaunt

The English civil wars of 1642–1651 are told through the perspective of those who were there. Almost all of the five million men, women and children who were alive in England and Wales during the mid-17th century would have been affected in some way by the civil wars, with around 200,000 people being killed as a direct or indirect consequence of the hostilities. This book is an exploration of the human experiences of civil war rather than a broader military history or a narrative of the conflict and it provides an assessment of the impact of war on combatants and civilians. Diaries, journals and letters have enabled us to build up a vivid picture of the varied experience of living through a civil war.

The Journal of Horace St Paul Neil Cogswell This is a landmark work in the history of the Seven Years War. In 1751, Horace St Paul had “a difference” with an older man over a lady which led to the death of his opponent in a duel. To avoid trial for murder, St Paul fled to France and became outlawed. From France, he moved to Brussels, where he was accepted at the Court of Prince Charles of Lorraine. The Prince offered him a post as aide-de-camp and sent him to join Marshal Browne. Having no regimental duties St Paul kept a journal of the day to day operations of the Austrians. He was present at the first major action of the Seven Years War at Lobositz. The following year, now in the suite of Prince Charles of Lorraine, St Paul was present at the great battle outside Prague and was subsequently besieged in that city. He was also in a position to gather eyewitness accounts of other actions - notably that at Kolin - as he accompanied the victorious Austrian forces on their advance from Bohemia into Silesia. 1756 And 1757: From Lobositz To Leuthen focuses on St Paul's journal and includes 232 plates of maps and plans.

War in the East A Military History of the Russo-Turkish War 1877–78 Quintin Barry

Tracing the course of the Russo-Turkish War, examining where the outcome of a battle might have gone the other way. When Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire in April 1877, it was the fifth time during the nineteenth century that hostilities had broken out between the two empires. On this occasion the other Great Powers had done all they could to prevent it, although public opinion in the West had been shocked by Turkey's brutal repression of the Bulgarian uprising. The book explores the complicated motives of the Great Powers in general, and Britain in particular, in bringing about a final settlement, which postponed the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.

The Italian Folgore Parachute Division Operations in North Africa 1940-43 Paolo Morisi

A more complete and balanced perspective on a critical juncture in the war including the battle of El Alamein. The North African campaign was one of the hardest fought episodes of WWII, yet the vital part played by the Italian army, and in particular its Folgore Parachute Division on behalf of the Axis is frequently overlooked. Initially created to emulate the German Fallschirmjäger in order to carry out the planned airborne attack against the British base of Malta, the Division fought on the battlefields of North Africa. This volume offers a fascinating insight into a little-studied Italian formation. World War iI

The first book devoted to the subject of reconnaissance in the nascent Tank Corps.

After their baptism on 15 September 1916 the tanks became dependent on a few Reconnaissance Officers to guide them into action. These came to form an elite group of talented men whose contribution to the nascent Tank Corps was far greater than their numbers might suggest. This new book seeks to pull together the activities, skills and techniques of tank Intelligence and Reconnaissance Officers and assess their place and contribution to British tank operations in the Great War.

A new perspective on the psychological reactions to the traumatic experiences of combat. In the Great War, soldiers were incapacitated by traumatic disorders on an epidemic scale that surpassed anything known from previous armed conflicts. This is thus the first shell shock book that is based on original case records from both sides of the battle.

A Taste of Success The First Battle of the Scarpe April 9–14 1917 Jim Smithson

An insight into a battle that showed the development of the British and Commonwealth armies in the early years of WWI. As well as showing why Arras became a focal point and covering the political background in depth, A Taste of Success also examines in detail the key role of the Royal Flying Corps, how tanks were used and the vital role of support units such as the Royal Engineers. Seeking to redress Arras’ label as ‘The Forgotten Battle,’ this book uses both British and German sources to deepen the analysis of events and to challenge myths and previous descriptions of the battle to present a fresh reassessment of this important, yet generally ignored, conflict as we approach its centenary.

Lost Opportunity The Battle of the Ardennes 22 August 1914 Simon J. House

An operational study of the opening phase of WWI – the Battles of the Frontiers. On 22 August 1914 French and German armies clashed in a series of encounters known as the Battle of the Ardennes. On that day 27,000 French soldiers died and yet it is almost unknown to English-speaking readers. At the centre of this book lies a mystery. One French army corps led by General Pierre Roques, outnumbered its immediate opposition yet dismally failed to capitalise on that superiority. With a thorough investigation of German sources, and through the discovery of three vital messages buried in the French archives, it is now possible to piece together what happened and to show how Roques threw away an opportunity to break the German line and advance unopposed deep into the hinterland beyond and to change the course of the war.

South Wales Miners in the Tunneling Companies on the Western Front Ritchie Wood A unique investigation to acknowledge the miners’ personal contribution to the Great War. For the first time, the lives of miners are highlighted from pre-war mining days, their very personal contribution within the Tunnelling Companies, to the resting places of those who did not survive the war and, for the survivors, their ultimate despatch home. The underlying theme is of an indefatigable band of men, asked to carry out multitasked duties associated with a form of military mining not foreseen prior to the outbreak of war. Details are given of the 207 miners who died whilst on active service and of how many others were repatriated.

Friends are Good on the Day of Battle The 51st (Highland) Division During the First World War Craig French Evaluating the 51st (Highland) Division over the course of the First World War. Underpinning the study is an analysis of both change and continuity, at home and overseas, and the performance of the division as a fighting unit. The key themes identified for study have been training, esprit de corps, recruitment and reinforcement, and battle performance. Through the investigation of the key themes, other important characteristics have been analysed, such as command and control, organisation, and the level of centralisation in both the formation and in the wider Army. Undoubtedly, the 51st (Highland) Division left strong impressions. How accurate were these impressions? Were they a result of something more than just consistent fighting quality? Indeed, was there a consistent fighting quality? The book considers a number of themes that have been neglected by historians, and brings into sharp focus some areas of research that may have produced inaccurate assumptions.

Pouring with Rain – Trops Fed Up British Second Army and the Liberation Offensive in Flanders 1918 Dennis Williams

This book examines General Plumer's leadership in what can be considered as his finest achievement of the war. During the final months of the war, British Second Army fought a successful campaign alongside French and Belgian forces in the Groupe d’Armées des Flandres. Second Army was the weakest of the British armies in September 1918. Initially their role was to secure the flank of the Belgian Army but early success made them the spearhead of the group. General Plumer, the Army’s commander, is considered to be the most successful of the British generals – yet rarely features in the histories of the Hundred Days. This book examines his leadership. The story is presented from the perspective of the British Second Army and based largely on original research - primarily the war diaries of the Second Army formations - together with selected contemporary writing, unit histories and current academic analysis. The account of the very first tank attack on 15 September at the 'Battle of Flers Courcellete' has never been bettered. The book takes the reader through the invention of the tank, the early recruiting and training of the first crews at Bisley and their transfer to France, and their preparation to attack at what was to be the last part of the Somme offensive. The War in the North Sea The Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy 1914–1918 Quintin Barry

Reviewing the entire course of the war in the North Sea to its dramatic epilogue at Scapa Flow. The history of the conflict in the North Sea between 1914 and 1918 is a record of attempts to break a strategic deadlock. The Battle of Jutland occurred when the two most powerful fleets that the world had ever known clashed, almost by accident, in May 31 1916. Many claim the battle as a British victory, a view which this book questions.

The 100 Hour War The Conflict Between Honduras and El Salvador in July 1969 Mario Overall and Dan Hagedorn

This book explores this short but intense confrontation that saw the last dogfights between piston-engine aircraft in the world. In 1969 two Central American states crossed sabers in what was derogatorily coined “The Soccer War.” This conflict had its complicated origins earlier in the century, when the North American companies United Fruit and its rival Standard Fruit, operated in Honduras, and both deemed necessary to import workers from El Salvador. In the early 1960s, political changes and the liberalisation of the region's commerce through the Common Market Treaty chilled the relations between the two countries and war began. Three Republics One Navy A Naval History of France 1870–1999 Anthony Clayton

A study of the history of the French Navy between 1870 and 1999 and the broader picture it demonstrates. In the 1870s, French warships were still rigged for sail, in the 1970s the Marine Nationale’s ships at sea included aircraft carriers operating supersonic jets, and intercontinental ballistic missile submarines propelled by nuclear engines. In this work the author has tried to weave together these very varied strands into a history of a navy whose nation’s priorities have more often been land frontier defence, the navy undervalued with a justifiable pride in its achievements poorly recognised. The Fight on the Home Front David Rogers Following the role played by civilian volunteers in the war effort. Whilst the men and women of national service age were called to arms in the various Services, the civilian population was also recruited. This relied on volunteers accepting challenges and committing to undertake duties outside the comfort of their day jobs. There were exceptions in that some young men were sent to the mining industry instead of undertaking their national service. These 'Bevin Boys' did undertake a vital role in the war effort whilst remaining civilians. The importance to the war effort of women was recognised from the outset. Some were asked to help in the manufacture of armaments, while others were asked to work on the land, with timber, or on the canals. Another facet of this civilian recruitment drive focused on young adults, for they were recognised for their potential military roles in the future. To that end, many boys (and in some cases, girls) were put into uniforms and trained in various activities.

The Battle for Heraklion. Crete 1941 The Campaign Revealed through Allied and Axis Accounts Yannis Prekatsounakis

Studying the invasion at Crete with the inclusion of an oft ignored battle, Heraklion. Crete, 20 May 1941. The first campaign-sized airborne assault is launched. Many books have been written about this famous invasion, with the emphasis mainly on the battles for Maleme and Chania. The battle for Heraklion, an epic struggle, remained largely forgotten and widely unstudied. This book highlights personal stories and accounts and the author’s access to records from all three sides allowed accounts to be placed in their correct place and time. Unlike earlier studies, the history of the battle is written with the added perspective of extensive Greek accounts and sources.

A look at the attempt by Operational Group Chibisov to collapse the northern shoulder of the German drive to the Caucasus. Using previously-classified Soviet and German documents, Sdvizhkov focuses on General Liziukov’s role in the counteroffensive as commander of the 2nd Tank Corps, after his 5th Tank Army was disbanded following failed counterattacks in early July. Sdvizhkov describes the German reaction to the initial penetration made by Operational Group Chibisov’s offensive and why the Briansk Front and Operational Group Chibisov Command initially made little or no effort to find General Liziukov when he went missing during the 2nd Tank Corps’ attack. The Rout of the German Forces in Belorussia Edited by Richard W. Harrison

A detailed look at the conduct of one of the major operations of the Second World War at the operational-strategic level. This study covers the Red Army's Belorussian strategic operation. Like most works generated by the General Staff, the Belorussian study divides the operation into two parts: preparation and conduct. The first section contains valuable information on the overall correlation of forces, equipment and troops densities along the breakthrough sectors and Soviet plans for supplying the offensive. The second covers the initial breakthrough battles and the encirclement of the Vitebsk and Bobruisk garrisons, followed by the capture of Minsk and the encirclement of sizeable German forces east of the city.

Days of Adversity The Warsaw Uprising 1944 Evan McGilvray

Re-examining the decisions regarding the 1944 Warsaw Uprising made by the leadership of the underground Polish Army. The questions raised are, was the uprising necessary and why was it so poorly conducted by a totally indifferent leadership? The challenge is made that the Polish leaders in Warsaw and in London were clearly unfeeling. In Warsaw the uprising was allowed to happen and was doomed from the very beginning owing to poor generalship. This work is supplemented with Polish sources as well as interviews with five women who had been involved in the Warsaw Uprising as young women and girls in 1944. World War ii

Real Lives Edited by Charlies Bird, with a Foreword by Colm Tóibín On the 23rd May 2015 the people of Ireland made history by becoming the first country in the world to introduce marriage equality by popular vote. The joyous scenes from Dublin Castle and across Ireland, as the historic vote was declared, made headlines across the globe.

Irish History

Charlie Bird, inspired by the extraordinary Yes Equality campaign, travelled the length and breadth of Ireland to record first-hand the moving life stories from over fifty people who were deeply affected by the marriage equality vote. These are the real stories from ordinary LGBT people who have lived in the shadow of inequality and oppression for decades. A Day in May is a poignant record of that transformative moment in Irish history.

After the Rising Soldiers, Lawyers and Trials of the Long Irish Revolution By Seán Enright This pioneering book traces the violent conflict of the 1916-1921 era in Ireland through the lens of the British legal system, highlighting how major trials and courts martial ran in tandem with growing political tensions in the aftermath of the Easter Rising. Continuing his story where Easter Rising 1916: The Trials ended, legal historian Seán Enright masterfully analyses the causes of the Rising, how it evolved into the War of Independence and lead in turn to the collapse of the justice system by January 1920. The establishment of trial by courts martial and Martial Law by the end of that year was unimaginable at this time within the British Empire, and Enright excels in unravelling the fascinating and unsettling significance of these developments, drawing startling conclusions about the limits of the judicial system under extreme duress. Liffey Green, Danube Blue The Musical Life and Loves of László Gede By Eibhlín Mac Máighistir Gede with Antoinette Walker

Irish History Biography

Liffey Green, Danube Blue is the remarkable account of László Gede, a Hungarian musician who made Ireland his home in 1969. His story begins in Hungary during the First World War, enduring poverty and hardship, and charts his rise to clarinettist in the State Opera House Orchestra. Between the wars Budapest was an exhilarating place for László, thrilling audiences with his Goldwin Gede swing band in its celebrated café society. The Second World War saw him playing in military bands and miraculously avoided being sent to the Front in 1944, while also involved in resistance work. The period was also marked by his two short marriages. Following his imprisonment by the postwar communist authorities, he escaped across the border to Austria along with his third wife during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956.

Soldiers of the Short Grass A History of the Curragh Camp, 1855-2016 By Dan Harvey

Irish History 19th Century History

This is the first complete history of the Curragh Camp, from its foundation in 1855 to the present day, under both British and Irish occupation. Dan Harvey, a military historian and an experienced senior officer, presents a compelling narrative of the camp’s many eras and episodes. This unique establishment has been key in shaping Irish history while being shaped in turn by the great national and international conflicts that it was founded to respond to: the Crimean War, the Boer War, the Great War, the Easter Rising and War of Independence are all accounted for under the banner of the British Army. The first tricolour hoisted overhead of the camp signalled no change to its level of service as the Curragh’s forces were quickly embroiled in the Irish Civil War, later oversaw the years of the modern Troubles and forged an international role with the Irish Defence Forces.

One Bold Deed of the Open Treason The Berlin Diary of Roger Casement 1914-1916 Edited by Angus Mitchel One Bold Deed of Open Treason describes the astonishing journey by Roger Casement to Germany in 1914, via USA and Norway, to secure support from the German government for the Irish Volunteer’s military plan against the British, and to recruit an “Irish Brigade” from the 2,000 Irish prisoners-of-war taken in the early months of the war. Through his vivid and gripping diary entries - that read like a spy novel and reveal the motives behind his pivotal role in the Easter Rising - his mission to seek arms and ammunition from Germany was to be the deciding factor in the outcome of the Irish insurrection.

How Global Politics is Transforming China's Weapons Buildup and Modernization Susan Turner Haynes

Presenting technical concepts in China’s nuclear power with minimal jargon, in a straightforward style. While the world’s attention is focused on the nuclearisation of North Korea and Iran and the nuclear brinkmanship between India and Pakistan, China is believed to have doubled the size of its nuclear arsenal. Susan Turner Haynes analyses China’s build up and its diversification of increasingly mobile, precise, and sophisticated nuclear weapons. Haynes provides context and clarity to this complex global issue through an analysis of extensive primary source research and lends insight into questions of why China, is the only nuclear-weapon state recognised under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty that continues to pursue qualitative and quantitative advancements to its nuclear force.

Blinking Red Crisis and Compromise in American Intelligence after 9/11 Michael Allen

Understanding the effectiveness of these institutional changes in response to 9/11. After the September 11 attacks, the 9/11 Commission argued that the United States needed a powerful leader, a “spymaster,” to forge the scattered intelligence bureaucracies into a singular enterprise to vanquish America’s new enemies: stateless international terrorists. During the 2004 presidential election, Congress and the president remade the post–World War II national security infrastructure in less than five months. Blinking Red illuminates the complicated history of the bureaucratic efforts to reform America’s national security after the intelligence failures of 9/11 and Iraq’s missing weapons of mass destruction, explaining how the National Security Council (NSC) and Congress shaped the U.S. response to the 9/11 attacks.

Amiable Scoundrel Simon Cameron, Lincoln's Scandalous Secretary of War Paul Kahan

Looks at one of America's most prominent 19th Century political figures. This study is the fascinating story of Cameron’s life and an illuminating portrait of his times. From abject poverty to undisputed political boss of Pennsylvania, Lincoln’s secretary of war, senator, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and a founder of the Republican Party, Simon Cameron (1799–1889) was one of the nineteenth century’s most prominent political figures. In his wake, however, he left a series of questionable political and business dealings and, at the age of eighty, even a sex scandal. Far more than a biography of Cameron, Amiable Scoundrel is also a portrait of an era that allowed—indeed, encouraged—a man such as Cameron to seize political control.

After leading his corps to a decisive victory at Five Forks on April 1, 1865, General Sheridan accused Warren of deliberate slowness and timidity and with General Grant’s blessing, relieved him of command.Walker and Girardi detail Warren’s military record, including his rise to corps command, removal, and subsequent fight for justice. Triumph And Defeat The Vicksburg Campaign Terrence J. Winschel

Winschel weaves a professional lifetime of personal experience and scholarship into this remarkable study of the Battle of Vicksburg.

american civil war

The Battle of Vicksburg or Siege of Vicksburg was the final significant battle in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. In a series of brilliant manoeuvres, Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River. He drove the Confederate army of John C. Pemberton into defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Grant besieged the city, which surrendered six weeks later, yielding command of the Mississippi River to the Union.

Triumph And Defeat The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume 2 Terrence J. Winschel

The hugely popular title is reprinted here with new chapters to explore the campaign in even greater detail. Following up on the popular success of his earlier book, Winschel offers ten new chapters of insights into what has been declared by many to have been the most decisive campaign of the Civil War. Designed to appeal to both general readers and serious students, Winschel’s essays cover a wide range of topics, including military operations, naval engagements, leading personalities and even the story of a family caught up in the nightmarish 47-day siege that nearly cost them their lives. american civil war
