Jerusalem Throne Games: Bible Story Battles after the Death of David explores the political battle for power to succeed David expressed through selected stories from the beginning of the Book of Genesis. Six stories from Gen. 4–11 are analyzed through the lens of the succession of Solomon and the collapse of his kingdom. These stories are identified as “son” stories or supplements to the existing “J” narrative and were written in support of the various factions or priesthoods vying for power. Part I reviews the exegesis which has occurred with these stories. Each story, the Sons of Cain, the Sons of Seth, the Sons of God, the Sons of Noah, the Son of Cush (Nimrod), and the Sons of men (Tower of Babel), is reviewed in a separate chapter through selected exegesis, midrash, and commentaries of Josephus through Westermann. Based on these analyses, certain tensions and issues are identified. These problems raise the question of the need to revise the Documentary Hypothesis to account for them.

Deposits of Valuables in the Landscapes of Ancient Europe By Richard Bradley A study of the character, location, social and physical context of specialised deposits in the European archaeological record. A Geography of Offerings has been written to provoke a reaction from archaeologists and has two main aims. The first is to move this kind of archaeology away from the minute study of ancient objects to a more ambitious analysis of ancient places and landscapes. The second is to recognise that problems of interpretation are not restricted to the pre-Roman period. Mesolithic finds have a place in this discussion, and so do those of the 1st millennium AD. The Cults Loch project has sought to bridge this apparent divide between ‘wetland’ and ‘dryland’ by focusing on a wetland site, the crannog, which lies at the centre of a prehistoric landscape, rather than being peripheral to it. The area is, however, comparatively neglected in discussion of Roman Britain, where it is often subsumed into a generalised treatment of the ‘civilian’ part of Britannia that is based largely on other parts of the country. This book aims to redress the balance.

The focus is particularly on Kent, Surrey and Sussex account is taken of information from neighbouring counties, particularly when the difficult subsoils affect the availability of evidence. An overview of the environment and a consideration of themes relevant to the South-East as a whole accompany 14 papers covering the topics of rural settlement in each county, crops, querns and millstones, animal exploitation, salt production, leatherworking, the working of bone and similar materials, the production of iron and iron objects, non-ferrous metalworking, pottery production and the supply of tile to Roman London.
