A pivotal chapter follows this analysis to accomplish two objectives. First, to set the stage in Jerusalem through the archaeological record on which the battle would be played out during the reign of Solomon. Second, to describe the weapon of war to be used, the alphabet prose narrative, the state of the art information system for its time. Part II offers a new J Documentary Hypothesis. It draws on the existing Documentary Hypothesis, the issues raised in Part I, and the setting presented in Jerusalem and in writing to offer a new hypothesis of supplemental and interactive writing by the Levites, Zadokites, and Aaronids battling for power to name, dominate, or influence the person on the throne. The story of Jerusalem throne games continued for centuries and the three-way battle for power began with the death of David.

Jerusalem Throne Games: Bible Story Battles after the Death of David explores the political battle for power to succeed David expressed through selected stories from the beginning of the Book of Genesis. Six stories from Gen. 4–11 are analyzed through the lens of the succession of Solomon and the collapse of his kingdom. These stories are identified as “son” stories or supplements to the existing “J” narrative and were written in support of the various factions or priesthoods vying for power. Part I reviews the exegesis which has occurred with these stories. Each story, the Sons of Cain, the Sons of Seth, the Sons of God, the Sons of Noah, the Son of Cush (Nimrod), and the Sons of men (Tower of Babel), is reviewed in a separate chapter through selected exegesis, midrash, and commentaries of Josephus through Westermann. Based on these analyses, certain tensions and issues are identified. These problems raise the question of the need to revise the Documentary Hypothesis to account for them.

A Geography of Offerings
A Geography of Offerings Deposits of Valuables in the Landscapes of Ancient Europe
Richard Bradley
Richard Bradley
Deposits of Valuables in the Landscapes of Ancient Europe By Richard Bradley A study of the character, location, social and physical context of specialised deposits in the European archaeological record. A Geography of Offerings has been written to provoke a reaction from archaeologists and has two main aims. The first is to move this kind of archaeology away from the minute study of ancient objects to a more ambitious analysis of ancient places and landscapes. The second is to recognise that problems of interpretation are not restricted to the pre-Roman period. Mesolithic finds have a place in this discussion, and so do those of the 1st millennium AD. Archaeologists studying individual periods confront with similar problems and the same debates are repeated within separate groups of scholars – but they arrive at different conclusions.

OXBOW INSIGHTS IN ARCHAEOLOGY
Oxbow Insights in Archaeology is a new peer-reviewed series which will provide a forum for authors to address big topics authoritatively and accessibly in paperback format. With a distinguished editorial board headed by Richard Bradley, the series is designed to provoke lively debate. Authors can reflect on any aspect of archaeology: be it period based, landscape, artefact, or theoretical, historiographical, social, phenomenological – though preferably stemming from their own work – and present new theories, a subject overview, current thoughts on a particular topic, or a sideways original approach. The aim is to give authors the chance to address a wide audience in an accessible way, to a high academic standard.

MOLLUSCS IN ARCHAEOLOGY
Methods, Approaches and Applications Edited by Michael J. Allen New volume addressing the many aspects of molluscs in archaeology. The subject of ‘Molluscs in Archaeology’ has not been dealt with collectively for several decades. This new volume in Oxbow’s Studying Scientific Archaeology series addresses many aspects of molluscs in archaeology. It will give the reader an overview of the whole topic, including methods of analysis and approaches to interpretation. It aims to be a broad based text book giving readers an insight of how to apply analysis to different present and past landscapes and how to interpret those landscapes.
It includes marine, freshwater and land snails studies, and examines an extensive range of topics such as diet, economy, climate, environment and land-use, isotopes, and molluscs as artefacts. It aims to provide both archaeologists and students with the first port of call for methods and principles, and to highlight the potential wealth Oxbow Books • 9781785706080 • Paperback of information which molluscs can provide. It 200 pages • June 2016 • £25.00 concentrates on analysis and interpretation which most archaeologists and students can undertake and understand, and to review the ‘heavier’ science in terms of potential, application and interpretational value, making it a useful and accessible volume.
STUDYING SCIENTIFIC ARCHAEOLOGY Studying Scientific Archaeology is a new series from Oxbow Books. The series will produce books on a wide variety of scientific topics in archaeology aimed at students at all levels. These will examine the methods, procedures and reasoning behind various scientific approaches to archaeological data and present case studies or extended examples to demonstrate how data is used and interpretations are arrived at. Our aim is that these titles will come to feature as recommended reading for university courses, providing a sound basis for the appreciation and application of scientific archaeology.

20 Years of Taskscapes in Archaeology Edited by Ulla Rajala and Phil Mills Collection of papers assessing the importance and value of the taskscapes approach in archaeological research. The concept of a socially constructed space of human activity in areas of everyday actions, initially proposed in the field of anthropology, has actually been much more applied in archaeology. In this wide-ranging collection of 13 papers, contributors show why it has been so influential, with papers ranging from the study of Mesolithic to historic and contemporary archaeology. While exploring new frontiers, the papers contrast British, Nordic and Mediterranean archaeologies to showcase the study of material culture and landscape.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF STRUCTURES IN EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY An Object Biography Approach Edited by Linda Hurcombe and Penny Cunningham
This experimental archaeology volume examines the themes of birth, life, and death of structures. The focus of Archaeological Open-Air Museums (AOAMs) is to present both the tangible and intangible past to the public. The tangible parts of AOAMs are the archaeological remains and the reconstructions. The intangible and, in some respects, the most interesting part of an AOAM, is the story of the people the museum represents. This volume explores, through research undertaken by both academics and craft specialists, the research and visitor agendas of structures and their life cycles as they are experienced by experimental archaeology projects and AOAMs. 9789088903892 • Hardback • £120.00 9789088903656 • Paperback • £40.00

Challenging Landscapes, 1570-1920 By Dianne Barre HISTORIC GARDENS AND PARKS of
DerbYshiRe
Dianne Barre
Lavishly illustrated study of nearly 100 gardens in Derbyshire, from famous estates to hidden gems. The open hilly terrain of much of Derbyshire has long been a challenge to gardeners and landscapers, but has produced some spectacular walled and terraced gardens. Wealthy aristocrats created important and unusual pleasure. Mineral wealth, including ore and coal, produced wealthy manufacturers and businessmen who created their own fashionable and expensive gardens to compete with established county wealth. In this lavishly illustrated and lively new study Dianne Barre looks not just at such beautifully restored and accessible gardens, but also lost gardens and parks at Swarkeston, Knowle Hill, Sutton Scarsdale, Wingerworth and Drakelow and considers the importance of gardens at Derbyshire Spa towns. There are many surprises as the author re-examines the fashionable, the quirky, the accessible and the lost and little known.

An Upland Biography
AN UPLAND BIOGRAPHY
An Upland Biography Landscape and Prehistory on Gardom’s Edge, Derbyshire
Landscape and Prehistory on Gardom’s Edge, Derbyshire By John Barnatt, Bill Bevan and Mark Edmonds Details the occupation of the Gardom’s Edge region from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age.
John Barnatt, Bill Bevan & Mark Edmonds
Gardom’s Edge is an area of gritstone upland situated on the Eastern Moors of the Derbyshire Peak District. Like other parts of the Eastern Moors, Gardom’s Edge has long been renowned for the wealth of prehistoric field systems, cairns and other structures which can still be traced across the surface. Drawing on the results of original survey and excavation, An Upland Biography documents prehistoric activity across this area, exploring the changing character of occupation from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age. It also tacks back and forth between local detail and regional patterns, to better understand the broader social worlds in which Gardom’s Edge was set.

Provides an historical narrative of the occupation and use of a vast area that was, for centuries, important as a Royal Hunting Forest and subject to many contentious laws and regulations, but which includes much economically marginal land. Four critical themes are explored through time: the shaping of the natural environment into human prehistory; human intervention through natural resource management; governance and management of the forest over time, stressing pressures on resources and attempts at exclusion of certain social groups; and policies and designations to conserve the New Forest. Cook aims to reflect a complicated narrative around the evolution caused by changing management and economic objectives reflecting governance arrangements at different times.

across Yorkshire, containing over 100 pages of beautiful photography capturing classic Yorkshire landscapes, villages and towns, with text illuminating the history, geography and ecology of the area. A book for those who love Yorkshire, and a splendid introduction to those less familiar with ‘God’s Own County’.
Our tour starts in the rolling, highly urbanised south, then climbs into the Pennines where high heather-clad moorland is bisected by valleys full of industrial heritage. Heading north, the landscape transforms into the limestone pavements and glacial valleys of the Dales where sheep graze peacefully on high grassland. The central Plain of York is the next area with its ancient castles and fertile farmland under a huge sky. To the east rises the scarp of the North Yorkshire Moors where high moorland and remote valleys stretch all the way to the gullstrewn North Sea cliffs. Turning south, we explore the gentle countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds. The final destination is the banks of the River Humber from the industrial plain to Yorkshire’s furthest outpost at Spurn Head.
Doug Kennedy has roamed Yorkshire’s lanes, byways and footpaths, seeking out what makes each place special and applying his photographer’s eye to capture the scene perfectly in sumptuous photographic images. These are complemented by informative text that gets underneath the surface of why things look like they do. It is a book for everyone who loves the Yorkshire to treasure, and a splendid introduction to its landscape for those less familiar with ‘God’s Own County’.

ARCHAEOLOGY AND LAND-USE OF SOUTH-EAST ENGLAND TO 1066 Edited by Michael J. Allen and David Rudling Authoritative textbook looking at South-East England from the Palaeolithic to the Norman Conquest. In this new authoritative textbook on the archaeology of South-East England intended for students, researchers, and those working in commercial archaeology, over 30 leading authors provide a comprehensive overview of the SouthEast as an informed narrative and interpretation of the prehistory and history of the region. Chronological chapters tell the story of the development of the South-East by period from the Palaeolithic to the Norman Conquest. Others focus on either specific areas within the region, or aspects of material culture and the economy. This is the first book to look at the region as a whole for a generation and since the advent of developer-funded archaeology, and it will have an important place in the archaeology of the South-East.

Explores the role and function of crannogs via the crannog at Cults Loch, Scotland. The Cults Loch Landscape Project arose out of the Scottish Wetland Archaeology Programme (SWAP), the objective of which is to fully integrate the wetland archaeological resource of Scotland into the more mainstream narratives of ‘dryland’ archaeology. The Cults Loch project has sought to bridge this apparent divide between ‘wetland’ and ‘dryland’ by focusing on a wetland site, the crannog, which lies at the centre of a prehistoric landscape, rather than being peripheral to it. Thus, the wealth of well-preserved evidence from the crannog, particularly the rich ecofactual assemblages, as well as the higher chronological resolution possible through the dendro-dating of waterlogged timbers, are brought to bear on our understanding of the evidence from the cropmark sites around the loch.

A multi-period approach to Portable Antiquities Scheme data in Lincolnshire Demonstrates the potential of finds from the Portable Antiquities Scheme to illustrate the archaeological record.
By Adam Jonathan Daubney Explores the significance of the Portable Antiquities Scheme for Lincolnshire – in particular how these finds enhance the ‘known’ archaeological record, and how they come together to form multi-period artefact scatters, defined here for the first time as ‘plough-zone palimpsests’. These demonstrate how portable antiquities are important biographical components of ‘temporallysticky’ or ‘persistent places’, and have the potential to reveal structuring within the landscape over long-periods of time. Discussion of hunter-gatherers shows them to be varied and flexible, but modelling of contemporary hunter-gatherers has reduced them into essential categories, portraying them as static and without history. It is often said that the study of hunter-gatherers provides insight into past forms of social organisation and behaviour; unfortunately it often limits our understandings of these societies. Here, contributors explore past hunter-gather diversity over time and space to provide critical perspectives on general models of ‘hunter-gatherers’ and attempt to provide new perspectives on huntergatherer societies.

WRITTEN IN STONE
Papers on the function, form, and provenancing of prehistoric stone objects in memory of Fiona Roe Edited by Ruth Shaffrey Investigates the function, form and dating of stone implements. Prehistoric Britain has generated an enormous number and wide variety of stone objects, but few books deal specifically with stone tools that are not flint. This book brings together papers from 22 of the UK’s archaeologists investigating the stone objects that were fundamental to the daily lives of prehistoric people. Four sections provide an introduction, and cover artefacts ranging from axeheads, maceheads and battle axes to querns, jewellery and loomweights. The use of material such as beach resources and chalk is also considered. The Highfield Press • 9780992633684 • Hardback 300 pages • April 2017 • £55.00 • 40 illus.

FROM COOKING VESSELS TO CULTURAL PRACTICES IN THE LATE BRONZE AGE AEGEAN
Late Bronze Age Aegean cooking vessels illuminate prehistoric cultures, foodways, social interactions, and communication systems. While many scholars have focused on the utility of painted fineware vessels for chronological purposes, the contributors to this volume maintain that cooking wares have the potential to answer not only chronological but also economic, political, and social questions when analysed and contrasted with assemblages from different sites or chronological periods. In particular, contributors highlight socio-economic connections by examining the production methods, fabrics and forms of cooking vessels.

SINEWS
of
EMPIRE
A recent surge of interest in network approaches to the study of the ancient world has enabled scholars of the Roman Empire to move beyond traditional narratives of domination, resistance, integration and fragmentation. This relational turn not only offers tools to identify, map, visualize and, in some cases, even quantify interaction based on a variety of ancient source material, but also provides a terminology to deal with the everyday ties of power, trade, and ideology that operated within, below, and beyond the superstructure of imperial rule. Thirteen contributions employ a range of quantitative, qualitative and descriptive network approaches in order to provide new perspectives on trade, communication, administration, technology, religion and municipal life in the Roman Near East and adjacent regions.

Magic and Mind in Late Iron Age Scandinavia By Neil Price Examines the evidence for Old Norse sorcery, looking at its meaning and function, practice and practitioners. Oxbow Books • 9781842172605 • Hardback 336 pages • June 2017 • £30.00
Magic, sorcery and witchcraft are among the most common themes of the great medieval Icelandic sagas and poems, the problematic yet vital sources
that provide our primary textual evidence for the Viking Age. Yet, despite the consistency of this picture, surprisingly little archaeological or historical research has been done to explore what this may really have meant to the men and women of the time. This book examines the evidence for Old Norse sorcery, looking at its meaning and function, practice and practitioners, and the complicated constructions of gender and sexual identity with which these were underpinned. Combining strong elements of eroticism and aggression, sorcery appears as a fundamental domain of women’s power, linking them with the gods, the dead and the future. What emerges is a fundamentally new image of the Viking world, in which magic and its implications permeated every aspect of a society permanently geared for war. In this fully-revised and expanded second edition, Neil Price takes us with him on a tour through this undiscovered country. On the way we explore Viking notions of the mind and soul, the fluidity of the boundaries that they drew between humans and animals, and the immense variety of their spiritual beliefs. We find magic in the Vikings’ bedrooms and on their battlefields, and we meet the sorcerers themselves through their remarkable burials and the tools of their trade. Combining archaeology, history and literary scholarship with extensive studies of Germanic and circumpolar religion, this multi-award-winning book shows us the Vikings as we have never seen them before.
About the Author Neil Price is a distinguished archaeologist specializing in the study of Viking Age Scandinavia and the archaeology of Shamanism. He is currently a professor at Uppsala University, Sweden. He is also an advisor on the documentaries that accompany the acclaimed Amazon Prime series, Vikings.

THE ANGLO-SAXON FENLAND SUSAN OOSTHUIZEN
THE ANGLO - SAXON
FENLAND
By Susan Oosthuizen New interdisciplinary history of the Anglo-Saxon fenland combining historical, ecological and archaeological data. Archaeologies and histories of the fens of eastern England continue to suggest that the early medieval fenland was dominated by the activities of north-west European colonists in a largely empty landscape. Using existing and new evidence and arguments, this new interdisciplinary history of the Anglo-Saxon fenland offers another interpretation. The fen islands and the silt fens show a degree of occupation unexpected a few decades ago. Dense Romano-British settlement appears to have been followed by consistent early medieval occupation on every island in the peat fens and across the silt fens, despite the impact of climatic change. The inhabitants of the region were organised within territorial groups in a complicated, almost certainly dynamic, hierarchy of subordinate and dominant polities, principalities and kingdoms.

WARRIORS, WARLORDS AND SAINTS The Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia By John Hunt
An exploration of the Mercians from the end of Roman rule to the Norman invasion. Anglo Saxon Mercia was a great power in its day, although many aspects of it have been shrouded in myth and mystery. Recent discoveries, such as the Staffordshire Hoard and the Lichfield Angel, have shone a fascinating light into the world of Mercia and the Mercians. In this volume, author John Hunt uses this evidence to paint a vivid picture of this political and cultural powerhouse which, at the height of its influence, ruled over much of England, and reached out across Europe into the Middle East. It shows the Mercians to have been a force capable of both great violence and great art, fostering the embryonic English Church and yet fighting bloody wars with the rival kingdoms of Wessex, Northumbria and East Anglia.

Toller Lectures on Art, Archaeology and Text Edited by Charles Insley and Gale R. Owen-Crocker
Presents five major cross-disciplinary discourses on the transformation of Anglo-Saxon culture.
TRANSFORMATION IN ANGLO-SAXON CULTURE Toller Lectures on Art, Archaeology and Text Edited by Charles Insley and Gale R. Owen-Crocker
In this volume, literary text is used to interpret both history and art; ecclesiastical-historical circumstances explain the adaptation of usage of a literary text; wealth and religious learning, combined with old and foreign artistic motifs are blended into the making of new books with multiple functions; religio-socio-economic circumstances are the background to changes in burial ritual. The common element is transformation, the AngloSaxon ability to rework older material for new times and the necessary adaptation to new circumstances.

EXPANDED BOATS By Ole Crumlin-Pedersen and Hanus Jensen Presents the archaeological background of expanded log boats, and describes three reconstructions. During the summers from 2005 to 2007, the Viking Ship Museum reconstructed and built three boat-finds from the Iron Age and Viking Age. Common to all three boats is that they all have a thin, hollowed-out log boat as their basic component, which is then heated and softened over fire and then expanded out into a new hull form. In this book, archaeologist Ole Crumlin-Pedersen presents the archaeological background of expanded boats, while boatbuilder Hanus Jensen describes how the three reconstructions were built. Both authors communicate their knowledge and experience with such passion, that we as readers get entirely swept up in their enthusiasm for this part of the Nordic clinker-built boat’s history.

EGYPTIAN BIOARCHAEOLOGY
Humans, Animals, and the Environment Edited by Salima Ikram, Jessica Kaiser and Roxie Walker Leading international specialists from varied disciplines explore the bioarchaeology of Egypt. Although the bioarchaeology of Egypt has been documented in a desultory way for many decades, it is only recently that it has become an inherent part of excavations in Egypt. This volume consists of a series of essays that explore how ancient plant, animal, and human remains should be studied, and how, when they are integrated with texts, images, and artefacts, they can contribute to our understanding of the history, environment, and culture of ancient Egypt in a holistic manner.

FLORA TRADE BETWEEN EGYPT AND AFRICA IN ANTIQUITY Edited by Ilaria Incordino and Pearce Paul Creasman Examination of sources, acquisition and trade in fragrant exotic flora in ancient Egypt. This collection of papers focuses on one particularly important aspect of foreign trade: the importation of aromatic products. Contributors present the results of the latest researches into the origin and meaning of foreign aromatic products imported in Egypt from the south (Nubia, Punt, Arabia, Horn of Africa) from the beginning of the Dynastic period. Through archaeological research, epigraphic analysis and iconographic investigations new evidence is explored supporting the most likely hypothesis about the sources of these raw materials.

Edited by
Claudia Antonetti & Paolo Biagi
Moving East and Back to West Edited by Claudia Antonetti and Paolo Biagi Examines evidence for the exploits of Alexander in the east and their aftermath. Alexander conquered most parts of the Western World, but there is a great deal of controversy over his invasion of India. In BC 327 Alexander came to India, only to be confronted by King Porus. According to Indian history he was stopped by Porus, but most of the world still believes that Alexander won the battle. Fearing the prospect of facing other large armies and exhausted by years of campaigning, Alexander’s army mutinied at the Hyphasis River, refusing to march farther east. Twelve papers in this volume examine aspects of Alexander’s Indian campaign, the relationship between him and his generals, the potential to use Indian sources, and evidence for the influence of policies of Alexander in neighbouring areas such as Iran and Russia.

LATE NEOLITHIC AND EARLY CHALCOLITHIC GLYPHS AND STAMP SEALS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM By Simon Denham Stamp seals were used in a similar way to modern signet rings: a negative object used to impress a design into another material, often clay. Whereas previous studies have assessed stamp seals as purely administrative objects, this new publication argues that they should be interpreted in their own, Neolithic, context by discussing the role of stamp seals in prehistoric society.

CELTIC FROM THE WEST 2
Rethinking the Bronze Age and the Arrival of Indo-European in Atlantic Europe Edited by John T. Koch and Barry Cunliffe Reconsiders the spread of Indo-European languages from an archaeological perspective. Until recently the idea that Atlantic Europe was a wholly pre-Indo-European world throughout the Bronze Age 20 mm remained plausible. Rapidly expanding evidence for the Overlap later prehistory and the pre-Roman languages of the Area West increasingly exclude that possibility. It is therefore time to refocus on a narrowing list of ‘suspects’ as possible archaeological proxies for the arrival of this great language family and emergence of its Celtic branch. This reconsideration inevitably throws penetrating new light on the formation of later prehistoric Atlantic Europe and the implications of new evidence for inter-regional connections.

Edited by Mariana Mondini, Sebastián Muñoz and Stephen Wickler
Edited by Mariana Mondini, Sebastián Muñoz and Stephen Wickler
Human migration tends to involve more than the odd suitcase or two – we often carry other organisms on our travels, some deliberately transported, others by accident. This volume of 12 papers offers a zooarchaeological approach to questions surrounding the nature and extent of human colonisation and migration, and the adaptation of humans to new and sometimes extreme or challenging environments. The volume is divided into two parts: Part 1 takes up the theme of Human and Animal Migration and Colonisation: contributors consider the relationship between human movements and the movements of animals and animal products. Part 2 focuses on the topic of Behavioural Variability in the So-Called Marginal Areas: contributors offer various interpretations of the concept of ‘marginality’.

DYNAMICS OF PRODUCTION IN THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST Edited by Juan Carlos Moreno Garcia
AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRY IN SOUTHEASTERN ROMAN BRITAIN Edited by David Bird he ancient counties surrounding the Weald in the SE corner of England have a strongly marked character of their own that has survived remarkably well in the face of ever-increasing population pressure. The area is, however, comparatively neglected in discussion of Roman Britain, where it is often subsumed into a generalised treatment of the ‘civilian’ part of Britannia that is based largely on other parts of the country. This book aims to redress the balance.
The focus is particularly on Kent, Surrey and Sussex account is taken of information from neighbouring counties, particularly when the difficult subsoils affect the availability of evidence. An overview of the environment and a consideration of themes relevant to the South-East as a whole accompany 14 papers covering the topics of rural settlement in each county, crops, querns and millstones, animal exploitation, salt production, leatherworking, the working of bone and similar materials, the production of iron and iron objects, non-ferrous metalworking, pottery production and the supply of tile to Roman London. Agriculture and Industry provides an up-to-date assessment of our knowledge of the southern hinterland of Roman London and an area that was particularly open to influences from the Continent.
