A New Look at the Waddesdon Bequest in the British Museum Edited by Pippa Shirley and Dora Thornton In 1898, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bequeathed to the British Museum a collection of nearly 300 objects to be known as the Waddesdon Bequest. The Bequest contains some of the most beautiful examples of medieval and Renaissance craftsmanship, including jewellery, silver plate, and microcarvings in boxwood. This book presents these findings and positions the Waddesdon Bequest within a wider intellectual and historical context.

American Science Fiction Film, 1950–1982 By Bradley Schauer A cultural and economic history of science fiction cinema, from B-movies to blockbusters. When the science fiction film genre first emerged in the 1950s, it was represented largely by exploitation horror films – lurid, culturally disreputable, and appealing to a niche audience of children and sci-fi buffs. How did the genre evolve from B-movie to blockbuster? This volume charts the historical trajectory of American science fiction cinema, drawing on primary sources such as internal studio documents, promotional materials, and film reviews to explain the process of cultural, aesthetic, and economic legitimation that occurred between the 1950s and 1980s. 9780819576583 • Hardback • £66.00 9780819576590 • Paperback • £22.00

CATHOLICISM AND CINEMA
Between Sexual and Devotional Excitement By Tomaso Subini and Della Maggiore Gianluca The book addresses the Catholic Church’s cinema-related activity, focusing on the Italian case between the 1930s and the 1960s, when the publication of the encyclical Vigilanti Cura (1936), in which Pope Pius XI invited Catholics to influence film production not just through censorship, but also by becoming directly involved in the field of cinema, led to the polarisation of the Church’s approach to cinema.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS By Alan O’Leary Commissioned by Algerians and made by Italians, with dialogue in Arabic and French, The Battle of Algiers (Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966) is a classic of political cinema. It is one of the most discussed films in the history of cinema, but scholarship has tended to festishize its ‘realism’: this book presents The Battle of Algiers instead as a ‘birth of a nation’ melodrama.

INSIDE THE ANTISEMITIC MIND
The Language of Jew-Hatred in Contemporary Germany By Monika Schwarz-Friesel and Jehuda Reinharz Exploring expressions of antisemitism in Germany today. Antisemitism never disappeared in Europe. In fact, there is substantial evidence that it is again on the rise, manifest in violent acts against Jews in some quarters, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse in mainstream European society. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. It demonstrates that hostility against Jews is not just a right-wing phenomenon or a phenomenon among the uneducated, but is manifest among all social classes, including intellectuals.

CELESTIAL EMPIRE
The Emergence of Chinese Science Fiction By Nathaniel Isaacson Explores how colonialism profoundly influenced the emergence of Chinese science fiction. Challenging assumptions about science fiction’s Western origins, Nathaniel Isaacson traces the development of the genre in China, from the late Qing Dynasty through the New Culture Movement. Through careful examination of a wide range of visual and print media – including historical accounts of the institutionalisation of science, pictorial representations of technological innovations, and a number of novels and short stories – Isaacson makes a case for understanding Chinese science fiction as a product of colonial modernity.

SCIENCE FICTION AND THE MASS CULTURAL GENRE SYSTEM By John Rieder A fresh approach to the history and shape of science fiction. John Rieder asks literary scholars to consider what shape literary history takes when based on a historical, rather than formalist, genre theory. Rieder starts from the premise that science fiction and the other genres usually associated with so-called genre fiction comprise a system of genres entirely distinct from the pre-existing classical and academic genre. Although the careful reading of individual texts forms an important part of this study, the systemic approach provides a fundamental challenge to literary methodologies that foreground individual innovation.

ENEMIES OF ALL HUMANKIND Fictions of Legitimate Violence By Sonja Schillings
Explores the legal justifications and narrative of state-sanctioned violence in U.S. history. Sonja Schillings argues that the legal fiction designating certain persons as enemies of all humankind does more than characterise them as inherently hostile: it supplies a narrative basis for legitimating violence in the name of the state. The book draws attention to a century-old narrative pattern that not only underlies the legal category of enemies of the people, but more generally informs interpretations of imperial expansion, protest against structural oppression, and the transformation of institutions as “legitimate” interventions on behalf of civilised society. 9781512600155 • Hardback • £79.00 9781512600162 • Paperback • £33.00

IN THE NAME OF THE MOTHER
Italian Americans, African Americans, and Modernity from Booker T. Washington to Bruce Springsteen By Samuele F. S. Pardini A bracingly original dialogue on modernity, class, and difference in 20th century America. Examines the cultural relationship between African American intellectuals and Italian American writers and artists, and how it relates to American blackness in the twentieth century. Samuele Pardini links African American literature to the Mediterranean tradition of the Italian immigrants and examines both against the white intellectual discourse that defines modernism in the West. This previously unexamined encounter offers a hybrid, transnational model of modernity capable of producing democratic forms of aesthetics, social consciousness, and political economy. HEMISPHERIC IMAGINATIONS
North American Fictions of Latin America By Helmbrecht Breinig An extensive study of fictional representations of Latin America in North American literature. What image of Latin America have North American fiction writers created, found, or echoed, and how has the prevailing discourse about the region shaped their work? How have their writings contributed to the discursive construction of our southern neighbours, and how has the literature undermined this construction and added layers of complexity that subvert any approach based on stereotypes? Combining American Studies, Canadian Studies, Latin American Studies, and Cultural Theory, Breinig relies on long scholarly experience to answer these and other questions. Nippon/Japan as Object, Nippon/Japan as Method Edited by Enrico Fongaro and Akihiro Ozaki A multidisciplinary and intercultural approach to Japanese Studies. How to learn in a time of globalisation? And in particular: how to learn if the research “object” is a non-European culture, such as a Japanese one? What are the methodologies appropriate for working in the field “Nippon/Japan” in a “double-direction”, from West to East and from East to West? Based on an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, specialists from Europe and Japan analyse topics focusing on History, Philosophy, Aesthetics, Literature, Linguistics, Sociology, Economics and Religious Studies.

LINGUISTIC AND DISCURSIVE ASPECTS OF TRANSLATION CRITICISM
The Italian Translations of Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Sharer By Daniel Russo Tests a model of metalanguage for critical discussion about translations as texts. This study is led by the overarching idea that a precise metalanguage should be required when intending to critically talk about translations as texts. Due to the lack of communication between the translation industry and academic research, notions heralded by Translation Studies are regarded as “too technical” by professionals. On the other hand, scholars sometimes fail to make their findings accessible to whole community of practitioners. This book intends to provide a practical, flexible and accurate model to be used when discussing translations. Mimesis International • 9788869770777 • Paperback 180 pages • April 2017 • £14.00

Edited by Luca Taddio and Kevin William Molìn A collection of writings offering multiple perspectives on the question of realism. This is a collection of writings, each offering their own novel perspective regarding the question of realism. It offers a contribution to some of the many discussions on the subject without entirely departing from the “old” realism and without treating its object of study as something that can be created ex nihilo. It is based on the broadly shared conviction that a certain historicism cannot be left out of the picture if we are to reposition realism.

REPRESENTING THE OTHER AND INTERCULTURAL EXPERIENCIES IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE XVIth–XXth Centuries Edited by Niccolò Guasti
Examines the history of the multicultural approach to ‘otherness’. The cohabitation of different cultures and the rise of new cultural and social clashes in more or less wide contexts (Nation-States, Macro-areas, Civilisations) has pushed human sciences to examine themselves, through an interdisciplinary point of view, and to develop new categories in order to define the Other. Since the development of a multicultural approach to the otherness was born in Early Modern culture, the book researches this historical process, beginning from the specific point of view developed by Jesuits between 17th and 18th centuries. SOCIOLOGY & SOCIAL WORK
SITUATIONS AND ATMOSPHERES IN ORGANIZATIONS A (new) phenomenology of being-in-the-organization By Christian Julmi
Social life in organisations significantly relies on situations and atmospheres. Despite the high practical relevance, so far no attempts have been made to theoretically capture situations and atmospheres in organisations in a systematic manner. Against this background, this book examines social dynamics in formation of situations and atmospheres. Theoretically, it is primarily based on the phenomenological works of Hermann Schmitz and Guido Rappe. LEGALIZING PLURAL MARRIAGE The Next Frontier in Family Law By Mark Goldfeder
Offers a legal and historical context for reforming family law and legalizing plural marriage. Polygamous marriages are currently recognised in nearly fifty countries worldwide. Although Mark Goldfeder does not argue the right or wrong of plural marriage, he maintains that polygamy is the next step – after same-sex marriage – in the development of U.S. family law. Providing a road map to show how such legalisation could be handled, he explores the legislative and administrative arguments which demonstrate that plural marriage is not as farfetched – or as far off – as we might think.

How and Why Smart Cities Are Passing on the Torch By Chris Dempsey and Andrew Zimbalist
SPORTS
NO BOSTON OLYMPICS
A play-by-play account of how No Boston Olympics rallied to reject an Olympic bid. In 2013 and 2014, some of Massachusetts’ wealthiest and most powerful individuals hatched an audacious plan to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Boston. Boston’s Olympic boosters promised political leaders, taxpayers, and the media that the Games would deliver incalculable benefits and require little financial support from the public. They only grudgingly admitted, when pressed, that their plan called for billions of dollars in construction. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) chose Boston 2024’s bid in January 2015 and for a time it seemed inevitable that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would award the Games to Boston 2024. This is the story of how an ad hoc, underfunded group of diverse and engaged citizens joined together to challenge and ultimately derail Boston’s boosters, the USOC, and the IOC.

HOT HANDS, DRAFT HYPE, AND DIMAGGIO’S STREAK
Debunking America’s Favorite Sports Myths By Sheldon Hirsch Proof that everything you thought you knew about sports is wrong. In sports there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Joe DiMaggio’s fifty-six-game hitting streak was magical. The three-point shot is an essential part of NBA basketball. Babe Ruth shouldn’t have attempted to steal second base in the ninth inning of the 1926 World Series. Scientist and researcher Sheldon Hirsch has taken a decidedly unorthodox approach to sports history. He looks at myths, legends, conventional wisdom, shibboleths, and firm convictions of all kinds that sports lovers hold to be true, and demonstrates how analysis of facts and figures disproves what tradition and sportswriters would have us believe. Divided into three parts, on baseball, basketball, and football, Hot Hands, Draft Hype, and DiMaggio’s Streak contains enough clear-sightedness and shocking conclusions to delight any sports lover. PERHAPS BAG
CUSTODY OF THE EYES
By Carol Rumens
By Kimberly Burwick
Perhaps Bag is about what it feels like to think. Carol Rumens is a kind of old woman who lives in a shoe with too many children that includes me, you, Russians, Englishmen, and children, and animals. And somehow she knew what to do.
These tightly wound lyrics examine the dark history of a dictatorship through the lens of motherhood while invoking the pastoral as a metaphor for loss, and the overwhelming human will to survive what has scarified us.

DREAM OF THE GONE-FROM CITY
WINDTHROW
By Barbara Edelman
By K. A. Hays
These poems tread the fault lines between worlds: internal and external, natural and constructed, past and present. They travel from Malibu to the Adirondacks to Bordeaux, France weaving disco, Shakespeare, and nursery rhymes into their exquisitely crafted lyric narratives.
Windthrow: a forestry term for the uprooting or breaking of trees by wind. This poetry speaks of nature’s violent transformations. At turns self-effacing and empathic, fearful and accepting, these are poems of heat: the heat of new motherhood, of uncertainty, and of grief.

WE WERE ONCE HERE
THE HISTORIES
By Michael McFee
By Jason Whitmarsh
Michael McFee continues to write inventive appreciations of often-overlooked subjects, pa r ti c u l a r l y th e peo pl e and language of his native Appalachia. This collection contains thoughtful and playful celebrations of such things as snoring, a wall telephone from the 1960s, ya rd s t i c k s , t h e S u n d ay newspaper, and Fats Waller.
The Histories is an extravagantly funny and deeply a f f e c t i n g wo r k o f t h e imagination. With an obsessive precision, Whitmarsh catalogues our m i s u n d e r st a n d i n g s , o u r absurdities, our joys, and, above all, our sorrows in a world of stunning invention and lyric beauty.

MISS AUGUST
A CAR STOPS A DOOR OPENS
By Nin Andrews
By Christopher Bursk
In the voice of three characters, Miss August tells the story of two friends growing up in Virginia during a time when massive resistance to integration causes public schools to close and private white-only academies to open.
Poetry grounded in both childhood and adulthood, for anyone who remembers being a kid and longing for something you can’t put a name to. Not afraid to be naked and laugh at this nakedness, it knows the sublime and the ridiculous and embraces both.

ABLOOM & AWRY
SACRUM
By Tina Kelley
By Bruce Bond
With the eye of a journalist and the heart of a caretaker, Kelley shares her love of words, fireworks, kites, sea-salt caramels, metaphor, and humans. Her poems pay close attention to the dark, moving through it with wit and affirmation.
Distinctive in their lyric beauty, imaginative daring, distilled emotion, and ceaseless questioning, Bond’s poems explore the mysteries of the flesh in terms both surreal and philosophical, scientific and metaphysical, personal and broadly cultural

By Andrea Cohen An exploration of the ancient human struggle to find meaning in loss.
POETRY
UNFATHOMING
Andrea Cohen’s poems search the shadow regions of yearning and grief, engaging in the human struggle to find meaning in the wake of loss, but they take surprising, sometimes meteoric leaps, landing in a place where brightness reigns. The voice in Unfathoming strives to upend the title: to both acknowledge mystery, and with wile and grace, comprehend it. These poems attempt to get to the heart of the matter as quickly or directly as possible, through narrative, expansive means.

LATE IN THE EMPIRE OF MEN By Christopher Kempf A powerful debut collection looking forward to a time when “the idea of people/is over”. This debut collection reads the author’s coming-of-age in Ohio and California against the westward trajectory of American history, which he simultaneously situates in the larger context of empire by looking back to Rome and Carthage and by glancing forward to a time when “the idea of people/is over.” Employing a baroque layering of image and allusion and post-narrative self-consciousness, Kempf reveals how commonplace rhetorical practices work to conscript young American men, in particular, into patterns of thought and behaviour constitutive of an imperialist state.

EVENT BOUNDARIES By April Ossmann Poems on relationships, faith, fear, love, mortality – and how these are shaped by environment. Event Boundaries considers conscious and unconscious desires and motivations to explore the ways our relationships and growth as individuals are interdependent, whether it’s possible to consider any relationship (including with ourselves) independent of the culture and environment it exists in; whether we create our culture and environment in part through the way we enact our relationships, to what degree reality is objective or a matter of perception, and how we come to terms with our and others’ mortality.

PERCEPTION
By Nathan McClain
By Christina Pugh
These poems dig deeply into the past and show us what is unearthed, and the effect these discoveries have.
Perception consists of short poems rooted in observed objects. Using metaphoric description as well as association, the poems inhabit the objects or entities that they contemplate – ranging from paintings and shop signs to wallpaper and flower species.

PLEASE BURY ME IN THIS
FIELD THEORIES
By Allison Benis White
By Samiya Bashir
The speaker in Please Bury Me in This grieves the death of her father and the loss of several women to suicide while contemplating her own death and the nature of language as a means of human connection that transcends our temporal lives.
Field Theories wends its way through quantum mechanics, chicken wings, and love. Woven through experimental lyrics is a heroic crown of sonnets that wonders about love, intent, identity, hybridity, and how we embody these interstices.

By Duriel Harris
By Rosamond King
Formidable explorations of art, citizenship, and life as a body amid the social, political, and electronic networks that define us. The poems here take many forms – prose, lyric, epigram, narrative, dialogue fragment, song, musical score, fairy tale, and dictionary entry.
These poems centre the experience of the outsider, whether she is an immigrant, a woman, or queer. Sometimes direct, sometimes abstract, these poems engage different s t r u c t u re s , f o r m s , a n d experiences while addressing the sharp realities of family, sexuality, and immigration.

ON WALKING ON
By Jared Stanley
By Cole Swensen
These poems crackle with aplomb and verve as they try to measure the distance between the ear, an organ of touch, and the often chaotic a n d s o m e t i m e s o rd e r l y vibrations the ears permit the body to receive.
On Walking On looks outward onto – or rather, walks through – the work of various writers for whom walking was or is an important element of daily life. The number of writers who were or are serious walkers is striking, and the connection goes back to antiquity, more recently including Woolf, Nerval, Sand, Debord, Sebald, and many others.

By Alli Warren
By Olga Broumas, T Begley and Kazim Ali
This collection looks hard at the material world we’ve inherited, including the ordinariness of the sublime and the sublimity and transcendence of what’s most ordinary.
Olga Broumas and T Begley include new collaborations in this reprint of a long o u t- o f- p r i nt e ro t i c a n d phosphorescent collaborative work. Written and arranged in an experimental mode akin to music or choreography, these fragmented lyrics create space and resonance honouring the physical splendour of both the body and the poem.

CHANCE DIVINE
FOLLOWING THE DOG DOWN
By Jeffrey Skinner
By John Liles
Chance Divine explores the broadest territory possible, from the origins of the universe to the speculative, precarious future. Visionary, wildly unpredictable, and often unsettlingly funny, this is a book that matters.
This is a study of parasitic intimacy, of unregressable cohabitation – when an animal finds its one true other and survives consuming them. This is poetry founded in the biological study of parasitic roundworms and the language through which we have come to understand them.

ADAM CANNOT BE ADAM
THE POLICE
By Kelli Anne Noftle
By Daniel Poppick
A text of constantly refracting mirrors providing us with insights beyond mere duality. These deft, inquisitive poems portray two Adams as external characters in an ever-shifting mythos while examining the inner double personae locked in self-confrontation.
These poems ask: How do we navigate the miasma that we call a common language? And what is the clumsy, mythic force dictating our movement and relations? Who granted it this power?

THE ROOM IN WHICH I WORK
GAVE
By Andrew Seguin
By Cole Swensen
Evoking the life of Nicéphore Niépce, one of the pioneers of photography, this volume investigates how photography has provided lasting metaphors for how we think, write, and talk about what we see. Combining original photographs with poems that range through history, chemistry, collage, dialogue and lyric, it is a singular meditation on language and image.
A river is a rift that joins what it divides, and so, logically, mythically, it’s a river that cuts this life off from every other. This is a poetry-essay meditation on the cultural and physical forces of these rivers.

IN THE LANGUAGE OF MY CAPTOR
THE WORK-SHY
By Shane McCrae
Blunt Research Group
Acclaimed poet Shane McCrae’s latest collection is a book about freedom told through stories of captivity. Historical persona poems and a prose memoir at the centre of the book address the illusory freedom of both black and white Americans.
The Work-Shy documents a secret network of overlooked communities that work in ways that defy work as we know it. Its poetic assemblages offer direct testimony from the first youth prison in California and from asylums for the chronically insane.

A lyrically vivid, meditative journey that is unapologetic in its determination to name, embrace and reclaim a revolutionary Blackness that has been historically stigmatised and denied.
